Abstract Whenever possible electroplating is the most preferred method of metallizing interconnects and devices in electronics. It delivers metals and alloys with their physical and chemical properties closest to the ideally attainable level. To do so the-state-of-the-art electroplating processes in electronics rely entirely on making direct contact of the power supply to the electroplated part. This is done either by having a heavier gauge clamp attached to one end of the object to be plated or with a, sometime intricate, conductive path or seed layer capable of delivering adequate electroplating polarization to the electroplated parts of the pattern. In most instances that type of direct link to the power supply presents a nuisance, forcing the designer of electronics to cope with the introduction of non-functional patterns, such as seed layers, taking space from the precious real-estate of the electronic substrate. Therefore, it is desirable to have an efficient way to enable metallization of isolated electronic patterns by electroplating, without sacrificing the substrate real-estate for establishing direct contact to the power supply. More recently a novel and potentially practical approach was introduced by ECSI Fibrotools. This process is the subject of this article. By applying the Contact Electroplating Technology (CET), US Patent #10,184,189, with up to several million electrical contacts per square inch, each isolated structure is simultaneously contacted and charged by the main power supply via the CET's working electrode. CET technique has been demonstrated with actual patterned structures of various substrates such as PWB surface finishing, flexible electronics, and various small electronic devices. CET technology enables completing or upgrading the electronic structures by electroplating of pure metal or alloy of desired thickness up to 10 microns or thicker if needed. Electroplating occurs directly on thin seed layer, laser ablated, or toner drawn patterns enabling well-defined metal plating. Completely isolated electronic interconnects were uniformly electroplated for surface finishing with Cu, Ni, Ag and Au.

A partir d’une observation in situ de six mois, il devient possible de souligner les difficultés d’intercompréhension entre un designer et un architecte. Le rôle des artefacts visuels apparaît alors clairement dans la médiation mise en oeuvre par les acteurs eux-mêmes, à la fois contraints et portés par la situation.

Cet article explore le développement d’une communauté professionnelle de design au Canada pendant les années 1950 et 1960 en examinant deux collaborations entre graphistes : les expositions canadiennes Typography (1958–1964) et l’exposition internationale Typomundus 20 (1963–1966). Celles-ci contribuèrent à la publicisation d’un nouveau discours qui permit aux typographes et aux concepteurs de la communication canadiens de se penser comme faisant partie d’une communauté unifiée et distincte de « graphistes ». Elles encouragèrent cette cohésion professionnelle notamment en avançant des normes professionnelles, en lançant une réflexion sur le statut et le rôle du graphisme par rapport au « grand » art, à la communication de masse et à la société en général, et en facilitant l’échange d’idées entre les professionnels canadiens et la communauté internationale de graphistes.

Cet article entend décrypter quelques réalisations du duo Heung-Heung Chin, alias Chippy, la designer graphique de Tzadik, et John Zorn, le musicien, compositeur et fondateur de la célèbre maison de disques. Tous deux croient au rôle déterminant du disque – à la fois comme support physique et vecteur esthétique – dans l’expérience musicale. L’esprit d’expérimentation caractéristique de la philosophie de Zorn trouve écho dans l’approche graphique de Chippy. La collection Archival Series, dédiée à l’oeuvre de Zorn, ne propose pas des supports musicaux banalement emballés, mais plutôt des objets multisensoriels – à écouter, à toucher, à lire et à contempler. L’écrin est inscrit dans la continuité conceptuelle et esthétique du contenu. Après le récit du parcours de la graphiste, de sa rencontre avec Zorn et de leur collaboration débutée il y a maintenant plus de 15 ans, nous procédons à une analyse graphique de quelques albums de cette collection.

Les professionnels ont par définition un public bénéficiaire de leurs services : le patient pour le médecin, le psychologue ou l’infirmière ; le client pour l’avocat ; le consommateur pour le gestionnaire d’une entreprise commerciale ; etc. L’usager ou l’habitant du cadre bâti constitue un des destinataires des services professionnels du designer d’intérieur. De quelle manière peut-on apprendre aux étudiants/futurs professionnels du design d’intérieur à se mettre à la place de l’usager/habitant des espaces qu’ils conçoivent ? Le concept de l’empathie, communément décrit comme la capacité de se mettre à la place de l’autre, de le comprendre et de ressentir ses sentiments et ses émotions, est bien adapté pour explorer cette attitude. Cet article est composé de deux parties. La première présente une expérience pédagogique en design d’intérieur où des étudiants apprennent à se représenter les usagers de leur projet d’aménagement en utilisant un outil méthodologique appelé « boussole éthique ». Cette boussole est constituée essentiellement de trois pôles qui renvoient aux trois rapports fondamentaux de l’être humain tels qu’étudiés dans la tradition stoïcienne : rapport à soi-même, à autrui et à la nature. Dans la seconde partie, l’article met en relief plusieurs éléments théoriques qui permettent de comprendre, de consolider et, éventuellement, de faire évoluer les bases conceptuelles qui sous-tendent cette démarche. Il s’agira notamment des théories éthiques et de certaines approches spécifiques au concept de l’empathie.

Janello Torriani, also known by his Spanish name Juanelo Turriano (Cremona ca. 1500–Toledo 1585), was a blacksmith, locksmith, constructor of scientific instruments, famous inventor of mechanical devices, automata-maker, clockmaker to Emperor Charles V, hydraulic engineer, mathematician, star-gazer, bell-designer, surveyor, and author of mathematical treatises to King Philip II of Spain. He was especially famous for his amazing planetary clocks, which he both designed and physically crafted (thanks to the invention of the first known machine-tool to cut gears), and for his hydraulic device of Toledo, the first giant machine in history that elevated water over a slope of ninety metres a distance of three hundred meters. Given this multifaceted professional profile, Torriani has been considered a Renaissance polymath and a genius. This article goes beyond the anachronistic understanding of these two categories, which it deconstructs, by analyzing Torriani’s education and the context of the mathematical professions during the sixteenth century. Janello Torriani, aussi connu sous le nom espagnol de Juanelo Turriano (Crémone c. 1500 – Tolède 1585) fut d’abord au service de l’empereur Charles Quint comme forgeron, serrurier, facteur d’instruments scientifiques, inventeur célèbre pour ses dispositifs mécaniques, constructeur d’automates et horloger ; au service du roi Philippe II d’Espagne, il fut ingénieur hydraulique, mathématicien, astronome, concepteur de cloches, arpenteur géomètre et auteur de traités de mathématiques. Il est surtout connu pour ses étonnantes horloges astronomiques qu’il a à la fois conçues et construites (grâce à l’invention des premières machines à couper les engrenages), et pour ses dispositifs hydrauliques de Tolède, dont la toute première machine permettant d’amener de l’eau vers le haut d’une pente sur une distance de 300 mètres. A common feature of text input tools is spell checking. It exists in search engines, email clients and of course in word processors like Microsoft Word. By having a spell checker when you are typing you can be more efficient than if you had to check the spelling with a separate proofing tool. Spell checking is a common request by the users of the room planning software CET Designer which is developed by Configura. In this thesis Windows Spell Checking API is evaluated and compared to alternative spell checkers. A prototype of an integrated spell checker in CET Designer text tool is then implemented with Windows Spell Checking API.

To decrease the rendering time of a mesh, Level of Detail can be generated by reducing the number of polygons based on some geometrical error. While this works well for most meshes, it is not suitable for meshes with an associated texture atlas. By iteratively collapsing edges based on an extended version of Quadric Error Metric taking both spatial and texture coordinates into account, textured meshes can also be simplified. Results show that constraining edge collapses in the seams of a mesh give poor geometrical appearance when it is reduced to a few polygons. By allowing seam edge collapses and by using a pull-push algorithm to fill areas located outside the seam borders of the texture atlas, the appearance of the mesh is better preserved.

This study was made at Configura Sverige AB and investigates different solutions for a generalized language resource system and a localization tool. The software application Configura CET Designer® that the solutions in this thesis should be applicable to is a kind of CAD tool that is used as a sales tool for configurable products that require space planning. Some types of products that CET Designer® is used for are kitchen, office and industrial solutions. The purpose of the thesis is to find an overall solution for the resource system that manages text resources in a more efficient way than the present custom made solution. One of the most important aspects is that translations of text resources to different human languages must be a lot more efficient than in the present solution.In the first part of this report an analysis of Configuras present custom-made resource system that is used in CET Designer® is made.The next part briefly mentions different types of solutions that exist on the market. This information is used to get a background of existing solutions that might be useful for a generalized language resource system and the range of different localization tools that exists.In the main part different solutions are compared and matched to general demands that can be applied to a lot of different applications that uses text resources. All of the solutions are also matched to the specific demands that apply to CET Designer®. Based on the matches to the demands and the analyzing discussions of possible solutions different recommendations of suitable solutions are made for applications in general as well as for CET Designer®.There are basically two different types of solutions and those are the custom-made system and the tools already available on the market. In many cases available tools offer a solution that is well designed and suits the needs well. Custom-made solutions are on the other hand very adaptable to different kinds of special requirements. The part of the management of resources where the biggest difference between those solutions is found is in the localization tool. The most advanced localization tools available on the market offers a functionality for managing localization projects which is economically indefensible to develop to the same advanced level in a custom-made tool. The advanced linguistically functions that exist in some available localization tools are the ones that make the biggest difference from a custom made tool. There exist several different tools that are available and compatible with custom-made tools which make it possible to create a well adjusted and very powerful tool.
Denna studie är genomförd på Configura Sverige AB och den undersöker olika lösningar för ett generellt resurssystem och lokaliseringsverktyg för språkliga resurser. Programvaran som lösningarna i detta arbete ska kunna appliceras på är Configura CET Designer®. Detta är en typ av CAD-verktyg vilket används för konfigurerbara produkter som kräver utrymmesplanering. Några typer av produkter som CET Designer® används för är kök, kontor och industriella lösningar. Syftet med arbetet är att finna en övergripande lösning för resurssystemet som hanterar textresurserna effektivare än den nuvarande egenutvecklade lösningen. En av de viktigaste aspekterna är att översättningar av textresurser måste vara mycket effektivare än i den nuvarande lösningen.Studien är indelad i olika delar där den första delen analyserar Configuras nuvarande resurssystem som är egentillverkat och används i CET Designer®.Nästa del som föregår huvuddelen av rapporten tar i korthet upp olika lösningar som finns på marknaden. Denna information används för att få en bakgrund kring vilka lösningar som kan vara användbara för ett generellt resurssystem för språkliga resurser och vilken vidd av olika befintliga lokaliseringsverktyg som finns.I huvuddelen av rapporten är olika lösningar jämförda och matchade mot generella krav som kan gälla för många olika applikationer som använder sig av textresurser. Alla lösningar är också matchade mot de specifika kraven som gäller för CET Designer®. Baserat på kravmatchningen och den analyserande diskussionen av möjliga lösningar är olika rekommendationer på passande lösningar gjorda. Detta både för generella programvaror likaväl som för CET Designer®.Det finns i huvudsak två olika typer av lösningar, egenutvecklade respektive befintliga verktyg som är tillgängliga på marknaden. I många fall erbjuder tillgängliga verktyg en väldesignad lösning som tillgodoser behoven på ett bra sätt. Egenutvecklade lösningar är å andra sidan väldigt anpassningsbara till olika speciella krav. En av delarna i hanteringen av resurser där skillnaden är som störst mellan dessa två typer av lösningar är lokaliseringsverktyget. De mest avancerade lokaliseringsverktygen som finns tillgängliga på marknaden har en funktionalitet för hantering av resurser vilken är ekonomiskt oförsvarbar att utveckla till samma avancerade nivå i ett egenutvecklat verktyg. De avancerade lingvistiska funktionerna som finns tillgängliga i några lokaliseringsverktyg är de som utgör den största skillnaden mot ett egenutvecklat verktyg. Det finns idag flera olika verktyg som är tillgängliga på marknaden som kan kombineras med egenutvecklade verktyg vilket gör att det är fullt möjligt att skapa ett mycket kraftfullt och välanpassat verktyg.

This thesis details the implementation of a navigation mesh within the interior space planning software CET Designer. The motivation for this is to investigate whether a navigation mesh is a suitable alternative to its current path finding solution which is based on a waypoint graph. An empirical analysis between the navigation mesh and the waypoint graph was also conducted. A navigation mesh is successfully implemented and an alternative triangulation method is also tested. The alternative method which is referred to as "narrowest first-ear clipping" seems to create a navigation mesh that produces slightly shorter paths than a navigation mesh that utilizes an arbitrary triangulation method. It is argued that the navigation mesh alleviates much work from the user since it requires less user input. The mesh is also able to generate paths between any two given points within it. This makes it much more dynamic than the waypoint graph. The conducted analysis shows that the navigation mesh seems to generate paths that are generally shorter than the waypoint graph. The path generation time for the navigation mesh is on average slower than the waypoint graph. We failed to provide an environment where the navigation mesh was faster on average than the waypoint graph. However, the time difference between the navigation mesh and the waypoint graph seemed to reduce as the test environment size increased.

A major problem during development and maintenance of software is lack of quality documentation. Many programers have problems identifying which infor- mation is relevant for someone with no knowledge of the system and therefore write incomplete documentation. One way to get around these problems would be to use a tool that extracts information from both comments and the actual source code and presents the structure of the program visually. This thesis aims to design an XML-driven system for the extraction and pre- sentation of meta information about source code to that purpose. Relevant meta information in this case is, for example, which entities (classes, methods, variables, etc.) exist in the program and how they interact with each other. The result is a prototype implemented to manage two company developed lan- guages. The prototype demonstrates how the system can be implemented and show that the approach is scalable. The prototype is not suitable for commercial use due to its abstraction level, but with the help of qualified XML databases there are great possibilities to build a usable system using the same techniques in the future.
Ett stort problem under utvecklingen och underhållet av mjukvara är bristande dokumentation av källkoden. Många programmerare har svårt att identifiera vilken information som är viktig för någon som inte är insatt i systemet och skriver därför bristfällig dokumentation. Ett sätt att komma runt dessa problem skulle vara att använda verktyg som extraherar information från såväl kommentarer som faktisk källkod och presenterar programmets struktur påett tydligt och visuellt sätt. Det här examensarbetet ämnar att designa ett system för XML-driven extra- hering och presentation av metainformation om källkoden med just det syftet. Metainformationen som avses här är exempelvis vilka entiteter (klasser, metoder, variabler, mm.) som finns i källkoden samt hur dessa interagerar med varandra. Resultatet är en prototyp implementerad för att hantera tvåföretagsutvecklade språk. Prototypen demonstrerar hur systemet kan implementeras och visar att me- toden är skalbar. Prototypen är abstraktionsmässigt inte lämplig för kommersiellt bruk men med hjälp av kvalificerade XML-databaser finns det stora möjligheter att i framtiden bygga ett praktiskt användbart system baserat på samma tekniker.

Katten är bland de vanligaste husdjuren i Sverige och att ha innekatt blir alltmer vanligt. Katten har många behov som exempelvis att få röra på sig och vässa klorna, vilket är stora aspekter i deras natur. Att aktivera katten är en viktig del i deras vardag för att undvika att de utvecklar oönskade beteenden som exempelvis att riva sin ägare. Bor man på en mindre yta kan det dock vara mer utmanande samt problematiskt att tillfredsställa detta behov tillräckligt. Mitt fokus har därmed varit att ta fram ett alternativt koncept på klösmöbel som även passar kattägare som bor mindre. På dagens marknad kräver de stora varianterna på klösmöbler ofta mycket golvyta, vilket kan bli ett problem om man bor mindre. Idag är det vanligt att kattägare bygger egna klösmöbler, men det är tidskrävande och därmed inte alltid önskvärt. Under projektets gång har jag intervjuat er kattägare och funnit ett behov av en större klösmöbel som passar in i det vardagliga hemmet och som lämpar sig om man bor mindre. En enkät skickades ut i olika kattforum där det tydligt syntes att kattägare ser ett värde om de själva kunde utnyttja klösmöbeln. Därmed designade jag en klösmöbel i kombination med en möbel som ofta nns i det vardagliga hemmet för både katten och kattägaren.
The cat is among the most popular pets in Sweden and having an indoor cat has become more common. A cat has many needs. For example, they need to be activated through play and allowed to sharpen their claws by scratching since these are major aspects in their nature. Activating your cat is an important part of their everyday life and to prevent them from obtaining unwanted behaviours, such as scratching their owner. However, satisfying the needs of a cat can become a di cult task and problematic for cat owners living more cramped home accommodations. Therefore, my focus has been to develop an alternate concept of a scratching post that also suits cat owners living in smaller homes. Larger scratching posts on today’s market often require considerable space on the oor, which can be a problem if you have a small home. It has become common for cat owners to construct their own scratching posts today, but that can be rather time consuming and thus often not desirable. During the course of my project, I have interviewed multiple cat owners and found a need for a larger scratching post that blends into the ordinary household. A survey was submitted onto various cat forums where the response clearly showed that cat owners found value in the concepts where they themselves could utilise the scratching post. Thus, I combined a scratching post with a typical type of furniture you often see in the ordinary household, one that can be used by both cat and cat owner.

Bakgrund och problem: En harmonisering inom redovisningsområdet i Sverige har skett, bland annat på grund av Sveriges inträde i EU. En av förändringarna är sättet koncerner numera redovisar goodwill. Under tidigare reglering skrevs goodwill av under en femårsperiod. I och med införandet av IAS förordningen har goodwill inte längre någon bestämd livslängd och testas istället årligen om nedskrivningsbehov föreligger. Värderingen av goodwill baseras på framtida prognoser, vilka alltid innehåller en viss osäkerhet. På grund av att goodwill inte längre har en bestämd livslängd utgör goodwillposten en allt större del av företags balansräkning. Eniro är ett av de mer extrema fallen. För räkenskapsåret 2008 redovisar Eniro totala tillgångar på 16.620 msek varav 11.374 msek är goodwill. När goodwill är en så stor del av företags totala tillgångar kan en felvärdering få ödestiga konsekvenser. Då värderingen av goodwill baseras på prognoser finns det en flexibilitet som skulle kunna nyttjas för personlig vinning. Studien undersöker om det finns ett samband mellan goodwillnedskrivningar och faktorerna företagsstorlek, rörlig ersättning till verkställande direktör samt om verkställande direktör är nytillsatt. Syfte: Syftet med studien är att studera om olika incitament påverkar företag att utnyttja flexibiliteten i redovisningen av goodwill. Metod: För att uppfylla syftet med studien har en kvantitativ metod tillämpats. Företag noterade på Stockholm Nasdaq OMX Large Cap och Mid Cap har behandlats. Datan om företagen har samlats in från företagens årsredovisningar räkenskapsåren 2005-2008. Resultat och slutsatser: Studien visar att nytillsatta verkställande direktörer oftare skriver ner goodwill än ej nytillsatta verkställande direktörer. Nytillsatta verkställande direktörer skriver dock ner goodwill med en lägre summa än ej nytillsatta verkställande direktörer. Resultatet förklaras med den höga variansen för nedskrivningarna gjorda av ej nytillsatta verkställande direktörer. Studien finner att stora företag oftare skriver ner goodwill och att nedskrivningarna är av ett högre värde än mindre företag. Ett resultat som finner stöd av tidigare forskning. Studien visar även att det finns incitament för verkställande direktörer under nästan samtliga räkenskapsår i studiens urval.

Over recent years the structural ceramics industry in Brazil has found a very favorable market for growth. However, difficulties related to productivity and product quality are partially inhibiting this possible growth. An alternative for trying to solve these problems and, thus, provide the pottery industry the feasibility of full development, is the substitution of firewood used in the burning process by natural gas. In order to contribute to this process of technological innovation, this paper studies the effect of co-use of ceramic phyllite and kaolin waste on the properties of a clay matrix, verifying the possible benefits that these raw materials can give to the final product, as well as the possibility of such materials to reduce the heat load necessary to obtain products with equal or superior quality. The study was divided into two steps: characterization of materials and study of formulations. Two clays, a phyllite and a residue of kaolin were characterized by the following techniques: laser granulometry, plasticity index by Atterberg limits, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, mineralogical composition by Rietveld, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. To study the formulations, specifically for evaluation of technological properties of the parts, was performed an experimental model that combined planning involving a mixture of three components (standard mass x phyllite x kaolin waste) and a 23 factorial design with central point associated with thermal processing parameters. The experiment was performed with restricted strip-plot randomization. In total, 13 compositional points were investigated within the following constraints: phyllite ≤ 20% by weight, kaolin waste ≤ 40% by weight, and standard mass ≥ 60% by weight. The thermal parameters were used at the following levels: 750 and 950 ?C to the firing temperature, 5 and 15 ?C/min at the heating rate, 15 and 45min to the baseline. The results showed that the introduction of phyllite and/or kaolin waste in ceramic body produced a number of benefits in properties of the final product, such as: decreased absorption of water, apparent porosity and linear retraction at burn; besides the increase in apparent specific mass and mechanical properties of parts. The best results were obtained in the compositional points where the sum of the levels of kaolin waste and phyllite was maximal (40% by weight), as well as conditions which were used in firing temperatures of 950 ?C. Regarding the prospect of savings in heat energy required to form the desired microstructure, the phyllite and the residue of kaolin, for having small particle sizes and constitutions mineralogical phases with the presence of fluxes, contributed to the optimization of the firing cycle.
Ao longo dos ?ltimos anos a ind?stria de cer?mica estrutural no Brasil vem encontrando um mercado bastante favor?vel para o crescimento. Entretanto dificuldades relacionadas ? produtividade e qualidade dos produtos est?o inibindo parcialmente esse poss?vel crescimento. Uma das alternativas para tentar solucionar esses problemas e, consequentemente, proporcionar ao setor oleiro a viabilidade do pleno desenvolvimento, ? a substitui??o da lenha utilizada no processo de queima pelo g?s natural. Com o intuito de contribuir nesse processo de inova??o tecnol?gica, o presente trabalho trata-se de um estudo do efeito da co-utiliza??o de filito cer?mico e res?duo de caulim sobre as propriedades de uma matriz argilosa, verificando os poss?veis benef?cios que esses materiais podem atribuir ao produto final, bem como, a possibilidade dessas mat?rias-primas reduzirem a carga t?rmica necess?ria para obten??o de produtos de igual ou superior qualidade. O trabalho foi divido em duas etapas: caracteriza??o dos materiais e estudo das formula??es. Duas argilas, um filito e um res?duo de caulim foram caracterizados atrav?s das seguintes t?cnicas: granulometria ? laser, ?ndice de plasticidade pelos limites Atterberg, fluoresc?ncia de raios X, difra??o de raios X, composi??o mineral?gica por Rietveld, an?lise termogravim?trica e an?lise t?rmica diferencial. Para o estudo das formula??es, mais especificamente para avalia??o das propriedades tecnol?gicas das pe?as, foi executado um modelo experimental que combinou um planejamento envolvendo mistura de tr?s componentes (massa padr?o x filito x res?duo de caulim) e um planejamento fatorial 23 com ponto central associado aos par?metros t?rmicos de processamento. A experimenta??o foi realizada com restri??o na aleatoriza??o por strip-plot. No total foram investigados 13 pontos composicionais dentro das seguintes restri??es: filito ≤ 20% em peso; res?duo de caulim ≤ 40% em peso; e massa padr?o ≥ 60% em peso. Os par?metros t?rmicos foram utilizados nos seguintes n?veis: 750 e 950 ?C para temperatura de queima; 5 e 15 ?C/min para a taxa de aquecimento; 15 e 45 min para o patamar. Os resultados obtidos demostraram que a introdu??o do filito e/ou res?duo de caulim na massa cer?mica produz uma s?rie de benef?cios nas propriedades do produto final, tais como: redu??o na absor??o de ?gua, porosidade aparente e retra??o linear de queima; al?m do aumento na massa espec?fica aparente e na resist?ncia mec?nica das pe?as. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos nos pontos composicionais em que a soma dos teores de filito e res?duo de caulim foi m?xima (40 % em peso), assim como, nas condi??es de queima em que foram utilizadas temperaturas de 950 ?C. Cette thèse est focalisée sur la conception et la réalisation d'un filtre CEM hybride intégré pour une application aéronautique. Les travaux effectués durant cette thèse sont réalisés dans le cadre d'un projet FRAE (Fondation de Recherche pour l'Aéronautique et l'Espace) intitulé FEMINA (Filtrage Electromagnétiques et Matériaux pour l'INtégration en Aéronautique). Afin de protéger le réseau de bord des perturbations électromagnétiques conduites et rayonnées et répondre aux normes concernant la compatibilité électromagnétique (CEM) et plus particulièrement la norme aéronautique "DO160F [150KHz, 30MHz]", un filtre CEM est absolument nécessaire pour les cartes d'alimentations des dispositifs électroniques d'un avion. Les niveaux des perturbations générées par ce type d'équipement exigent une conception soignée pour assurer le filtrage des courants parasites qui se propagent en mode commun (MC) et en mode différentiel (MD). C'est pourquoi, la première partie du travail réalisé est consacrée à la modélisation électromagnétique de la carte d'alimentation utilisée comme support à cette étude. Cette modélisation est basée sur une représentation de type "boîte noire". Le modèle identifié est composé de sources de perturbations et d'impédances de MC et de MD équivalentes. Cette première étape permet de définir la structure électrique du filtre et les valeurs des composants à mettre en œuvre. Pour atteindre les performances requises, nous proposons dans ce travail un filtre CEM hybride optimisé, hybride signifiant qu'il est réalisé par association d'une partie purement passive et d'un filtre actif. Cette association permet de tirer le meilleur parti de chaque technologie de filtrage. Le filtre actif permet de traiter les perturbations à basses fréquences et la partie passive est dimensionnée pour les perturbations à hautes fréquences. Une intégration complète dans le circuit imprimé (PCB) des parties passives, capacitives et inductives, est proposée dans la deuxième partie de ce travail. Après avoir choisi les matériaux magnétique et diélectrique qui répondent au mieux au cahier de charge défini dans la première partie, plusieurs tests d'intégration dans le PCB ont été effectués. En prenant en compte la fragilité des matériaux magnétiques (ferrites), une géométrie plane qui répond aux spécifications a été proposée. Les principaux avantages de l'intégration proposée sont la réduction des effets inductifs et capacitifs parasites conduisant, de fait, à une augmentation des atténuations à hautes fréquences et l'augmentation de la compacité du filtre CEM. Nous démontrons que le filtre passif intégré réalisé réduit les interférences en MC et en MD dans la gamme de fréquences qui s'étend de 2,5MHz à 30MHz. Afin de compenser les tensions perturbatrices de mode différentiel jusqu'à 2,5MHz, une nouvelle topologie de filtre actif est proposée. Dans cette structure, l'injection des tensions de compensation des perturbations est effectuée à l'aide d'un enroulement auxiliaire ajouté aux enroulements couplés du filtre passif intégré. Les composants du filtre actif sont montés sur la face supérieure du PCB (composants CMS) dans lequel le filtre passif est intégré. L'assemblage du filtre hybride intégré (4 x 5 x 0,4 cm3) réduit les perturbations en MC et en MD dans la gamme de fréquence [150 kHz, 30 MHz]. Grâce à l'intégration et à l'optimisation de la topologie du filtre actif, le volume du filtre hybride est 75% plus faible que celui de l'ancien filtre CEM utilisé à l'entrée du convertisseur (4 x 5 x 1,6 cm3) tout en conservant un rendement élevé.

This paper introduces a framework for enhancing creative thinking in engineering design. As a flexible methodology, the proposed Creative Engineering Design (CED) framework integrates a new concept development tool, the Concept Assessment Taxonomy (CAT), which constitutes the core of the proposed methodology. By combining the procedures of concept generation, evaluation and selection in a single matrix, the CAT aims to systematize and simplify the overall conceptualization process, while delivering design process transparency. Early trials have shown the effectiveness of the CED framework in offering procedural guidance and a better comprehension of the multifaceted nature of engineering design. It complements well-established textbook-methods in an effort to reduce ad-hoc and trial-and-error approaches, while minimizing decision-making based on intuition and guesswork. In order to demonstrate its usefulness within a real world context, the proposed methodology is applied to a case study in the field of mechanical design: a new mechanical fuel injection system capable of curbing small engine emissions.

Over the past several years, Carbuilders have been developing car designs that utilize Crash Energy Management (CEM) as an alternative means to demonstrate compliance with carbody structural strength requirements. With the onset of CEM designs, the CFR has been amended to include requirements for alternative compliance to carbody structure requirements (see Docket No. FRA-2013-0060, Notice No. 3, [the Final Rule]) [14]. CEM designs often utilize crush zones with the overall goal of protecting occupant volume. These designs also change the structural behavior of the car during an accident, resulting in different acceleration responses than conventional car designs. This paper seeks to compare and contrast the interior fitting strength requirements between conventional car designs and a generic CEM design. The methodology utilizes simple mathematical simulations, modeling a conventional car design and a CEM design, with outputs of the simulation consisting of car response and behavior. Results indicate that alternative compliance requirements for all tiers of CEM-designed passenger equipment should be considered for interior fixtures.

Abstract The LACMTA HR4000 heavy rail vehicle was designed to meet the ASME RT-2 Safety Standard for Structural Requirements for Heavy Rail Transit Vehicles. The crash energy management (CEM) structures designed for this vehicle also provide unique performance characteristics through use of a staged combination of CEM technologies. The resulting design, using easily replaceable components, provides reduced repair costs for lower speed collisions, minimizes the number of cars damaged during a collision, while exceeding the RT-2 standard for safety to the operator. None of the CEM technologies used are novel, but their integrated design provides a unique performance in heavy rail vehicle design. This paper provides an overview of the CEM design development. First, a general description of the CEM system function is provided, including the various CEM technologies used and how they interact during a collision. Then the 1-dimensional and 3-dimensional nonlinear dynamic models developed for optimizing the design are discussed. The CEM test program performed to demonstrate the system function and validate the modeling is described. Finally, the performance of the CEM system in train-to-train collision analyses is presented. Underframe testing was conducted for validation of the simulations.

The most recent civil aircraft dominantly use composite structures such as in the ailerons. However, airworthiness authorities raise concerns about lightning strike damage and repairability if the aileron is made of composite material. Today, aerodynamic profiles of aircraft wings become more complex and challenging for designers who need adequate space to fit conventional “torque box” designs inside the wing surfaces. The aero-surfaces may become too shallow and curved in the trailing edge side of the wing which is highly exposed to edge impact and lightning strike damages. This paper presents a new design concept for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) External Trailing Edge (CETE) structure for the trailing edge of the ailerons. CETE is attached to the main aileron torque box where the main load carrying composite spar, ribs and panels are located. The design objective of the CETE combines various important features such as better strength characteristics against lightning strike and edge impact, and easier repairability with a lighter aileron. This paper also discusses recurring and non-recurring costs and monetary benefits of the new design concept. The CETE concept is as simple as creating a secondary torque box on the trailing edge side of the aileron with two C-section parts; inner and outer parts of CETE. The inner part of CETE provides a secondary spar to the aileron to sustain the main torque box force flows and support the trailing edge panels. The main structural feature of CETE is to form a low loaded zone by its outer part which is located at the outermost region of the trailing edge where mechanical edge impact and lightning strike damages are frequently encountered. It is revealed during the lightning strike tests that, the resulting damages can be catastrophic and located at the trailing edge line where the metallic strips are located. In case of lightning strike damage on the CETE, the aileron is able to carry loads since the flows in the main torque box is minimally disturbed as the inner part of CETE is still intact while the outer part is damaged. Similarly, the damage after edge impact is trapped at the outer section of the CETE where the loads are minimized by CETE design. In case of a larger damage, CETE can be replaced easily instead of replacing the whole aileron which is cost effective in long term although the initial costs seem higher than the conventional designs.

The ability to select a design alternative, from a set of feasible alternatives, that is likely to meet customers’ and designer’s preferences and also account for uncertainties is vital to the success of a product design process. This paper presents a new metric, a Customer-based Expected Utility (CEU) metric, for product design selection that accounts for a range of attribute levels (i.e., the customer range) within which customers make purchase decisions. The metric also accounts for designer’s preferences and uncertainty in achieving a desired attribute level (or a combination of attribute levels). The application of the CEU metric is demonstrated by rank-ordering a set of design alternatives for a cordless power tool. Using this metric, design alternatives that fall outside the customer range will yield a relatively low CEU value, while among those that fall in the customer range, the alternatives with a higher value of the designer’s utility yield a higher value of the CEU metric.

Abstract The heat balance of gas turbine (GT) combustors is used for determining the average Combustor Exit Temperature (CET). It is important for designing the hot parts in this area. Sensor measurements of the CET are nearly impossible due to its high level up to above 1700°C. Therefore it is typically evaluated based on a 1-D cycle calculation, in which the combustor receives compressed air and fuel and it discharges the hot combustion gas at the temperature CET. In the classic approach the fuel heat received in the combustor is evaluated based on the lower heating value (LHV) of the fuel and after the complete combustion the mixture of excess air and combustion products leaves the combustor at the temperature CET, which is calculated based on its specific enthalpy function. So far so simple but this is tricky. The reaction energy is not the LHV but the higher heating value HHV, which includes additionally the discharged energy for condensing the combustion water at ambient temperature. The total heat comes into the flue-gas in the combustor, which is designed for a combustion efficiency of typically 99%+. There is no significant downstream reaction known, which could add the missing difference of HHV-LHV. In GT based power stations condensation is mostly avoided by sufficiently high stack temperature. For methane as a fuel the HHV is around 11% higher than the LHV. Thus the CET derived with the LHV for a given fuel mass flow rate may be underestimated. The method comparison shown below indicates values around 10K. This is a “grey” issue. The intention of this paper is an attempt to understand this practice both technically and historically. Gas turbine catalogues indicate performance data based on burning pure methane. This may have its historic roots in the fact that methane (only Methane, not higher hydrocarbons) burns with oxygen without a change of the specific volume. This simplified the cycle calculation in the sense that combustion could be modelled by adding the LHV to air and methane (assuming an equal temperature) and by calculating the expansion of air and methane separately (corresponding to mixed if no chemical reaction due to the high temperature is assumed) but with the same polytropic efficiency. At ambient temperature this fuel-air mixture is still gaseous and therefore the heat balance of the GT matches exactly with the LHV (used before in the combustor heat balance) because there is no condensation issue. Another feature of the air may compensate the CET mistake partly when using the LHV. It is the effect of dissociation. This increases the specific heat and therefore reduces the calculated CET. In the older time the used specific heat function of air did not include the dissociation effect while nowadays it is mostly included assuming chemical equilibrium. In this paper the good match of a cycle calculation considering the HHV and dissociation with published OEM data will be demonstrated. Indeed this method contradicts existing standards and practices and a further discussion considering the evidence shown below is welcome. In its current development state it allows considering any fuel defined only by the HHV and by its composition with hydrogen to carbon ratio by mass. Additionally it also allows considering high fogging with water injection rates up to several mass % of the air inlet flow rate.

This paper is built around ASTM E 2506, Standard Guide for Developing a Cost-Effective Risk Mitigation Plan for New and Existing Constructed Facilities. E 2506 establishes a three-step protocol—perform risk assessment, specify combinations of risk mitigation strategies for evaluation, and perform economic evaluation—to insure that the decision maker is provided the requisite information to choose the most cost effective combination of risk mitigation strategies. Because decisions associated with low-probability, high-consequence events involve uncertainty both in terms of appropriate evaluation procedures and event-related measures of likelihood and consequence, NIST developed a Risk Mitigation Toolkit. This paper uses (a) a data center undergoing renovation for improved security, and (b) a PVP-related failure event to illustrate how to perform the E 2506 three-step protocol with particular emphasis on the third step—perform economic evaluation. The third step is built around the Cost-Effectiveness Tool for Capital Asset Protection (CET), which was developed by NIST. Version 4.0 of CET is used to analyze the security- or failure-related event with a focus on consequence estimation and consequence assessment via Monte Carlo techniques. CET 4.0 includes detailed analysis and reporting features designed to identify key cost drivers, measure their impacts, and deliver estimated consequence parameters with uncertainty bounds. Significance of this economics-based intelligence (EI) tool is presented and discussed for security- or failure-consequence estimation to risk assessment of failure of critical structures or components.

The economical, environmental, and safe movement of gas and oil to the marketplace requires transmission pipelines to be designed to operate at higher pressures and/or with improved toughness over a variety of temperature ranges. To meet the higher strength and toughness specification requirements of these transmission pipelines, appropriate materials and processes must be used in their design and construction. This includes selection of appropriate alloy composition, processing routes, microstructure control, and cost. A continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram is a tool that can be used to select alloy composition and processing route in order to obtain a specific, desirable microstructure for transmission linepipe steels in a cost-effective manner. In the past, CCT diagrams were developed experimentally under laboratory conditions, thus requiring extensive time and effort. However, with the vast data available and improved computational tools, reasonably accurate computer generated CCT diagrams can be produced quickly. These computer generated diagrams can give the materials design engineer a reasonable understanding of the effect of subjecting a given alloy to various processing routes and hence the resultant microstructures. Since final microstructure is a key variable in determining the linepipe steel material properties, the chosen alloy/processing route and its effect on the final microstructure needs to be understood. This paper will discuss the role of CCT diagrams in the design of steels (cost, alloy, processing, and microstructure) for oil and gas transmission pipelines. Examples of computer generated CCT digrams for various API alloy designs are included.

Diesel engine is a major source of power of the future but the major growing concern is the emissions of nitrogen oxides and diesel particulates. This work deals with the particulate emission control of diesel engine exhaust using ceramic filter. The selection of CFT with suitable size, geometry, cell density, wall thickness and microstructure becomes most important. In order to achieve required particulate matter emission limits and lower backpressure, optimization of porosity, pore size distribution, mean pore size and pore connectivity in CFT is crucial. CFT are developed and tested on the basis of porosity, diameter and length of CFT with necessary recommended trials. Further experiments were carried out to understand the effect of porosity, diameter and length of CFT on the back pressure, rate of back pressure rise, filtration efficiency and break power of diesel engine. The investigation of the research work provides adequate relevant information about the development of ceramic type ceramic filter trap (CFT) with naturally available material and effect of CFT on particulate matter concentration and on engine performance. Use of CFT reduced smoke drastically without increasing back pressure beyond tolerable back pressure limit. Performance of developed CFT was compared with established CFT and matches with it. Cost of developed CFT is the distinct advantage which will promote cottage industries in undeveloped nations, and provide rural employment.

A critical task in product design is mapping information from consumer space to design space. Currently, this process is largely dependent on the designer to identify and map how psychological and consumer level factors relate to engineered product attributes. In this way, current methodologies lack provision to test a designer’s cognitive reasoning, which could introduce bias while mapping from consumer to design space. Cyber-Empathic Design is a novel framework where user-product interaction data is acquired using embedded sensors. To understand consumer perceptions about a particular product, a network of latent psychological constructs is used to form a causal model allowing designers to better understand user preferences. In this work, we extend this framework by integrating choice-based preference modeling to develop a Discrete Choice Analysis integrated Cyber-Empathic design framework (DCA-CED). We model user preferences and ultimately consumer choice by considering perceptions estimated by psychological latent variables and user-product interaction data. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework, a case study using a sensor integrated shoe design is presented where data to represent user demographics, sensor readings, and product choice is simulated. Using the DCA-CED method, the model parameters are recovered and compared with the original parameter values in the simulator. In addition, the ability of the framework to predict choice based on user product-interaction data is tested. The results show that the analytical method effectively captures the underlying data generation process thereby validating the proposed framework and the analytical method.

The focus of this paper is on the complementary mechanisms and interventions likely to increase the effectiveness and impact of conditional cash transfer (CCT) schemes in South Asia that aim to reduce female infanticide and child marriage and promote girls’ education. The literature on the institutional aspects of these particular schemes is limited, but from this and from the wider literature on CCT programmes in similar contexts, the following institutional mechanisms are likely to enhance success: a strong information and communication strategy that enhances programme reach and coverage and ensures stakeholder awareness; advance agreements with financial institutions; a simple and flexible registration process; appropriate use of technology to strengthen access, disbursement, and oversight; adequate implementation capacity to support processes of outreach, enrolment, and monitoring; monitoring and accountability mechanisms embedded in programme design; coordination mechanisms across government across social protection schemes; an effective management information system; and the provision of quality services in the sectors for which conditions are required. There is a very limited body of evidence that explores these institutional issues as they apply to the specific CCT programmes that are the focus of this report, however, there is more available evidence of the potential impact of ‘cash-plus’ programmes, which complement the transfers with other interventions designed to enhance their results or address the structural barriers to well-being

Conditional Cash transfer (CCT) programs have been shown to have positive effects on a variety of outcomes including education, consumption and health visits, amongst others. We estimate the long-run impacts of the urban version of Familias en Acción, the Colombian CCT program on crime, teenage pregnancy, high school dropout and college enrollment using a Regression Discontinuity design on administrative data. ITT estimates show a reduction on arrest rates of 2.7pp for men and a reduction on teenage pregnancy of 2.3pp for women. High school dropout rates were reduced by 5.8pp and college enrollment was increased by 1.7pp for men.
