Creative practice in music takes place in a distributed and interactive manner embracing the activities of composers, performers and improvisers—despite the sharp division of labour between these roles that traditional concert culture often presents. Two distinctive features of contemporary music are the greater incorporation of improvisation and the development of integrated and collaborative working practices between composers and performers. By blurring the distinction between composition and performance, improvisation and collaboration provide important perspectives on the distributed creative processes that play a central role in much contemporary concert music. This volume explores how collaboration and improvisation enable and constrain these creative processes. Organized into three parts, thirteen chapters and twelve shorter Interventions present diverse perspectives on distributed and collaborative creativity in music, on a range of collaborations between composers and performers, and on the place of improvisation within contemporary music, broadly defined. The thirteen chapters provide more substantial discussions of a variety of conceptual frameworks and particular projects, while the twelve Interventions provide more informal contributions from a variety of practitioners (composers, performers, improvisers), giving direct insights into the pleasures and problems of working creatively in music in collaborative and improvised ways.

Abstract In most mainstream traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism, women have for centuries largely been excluded from positions of religious and ritual leadership. However, as this volume shows, in an increasing number of late-20th-century and early-21st-century contexts, women can and do undergo monastic and priestly education; they can receive ordination/initiation as Buddhist nuns or Hindu priestesses; and they are accepted as religious and political leaders. Even though these processes still largely take place outside or at the margins of traditional religious institutions, it is clear that women are actually establishing new religious trends and currents. They are attracting followers, and they are occupying religious positions on par with men. At times women are filling a void left behind by male religious specialists who left the profession, at times they are perceived as their rivals. In some cases, this process takes place in collaboration with male religious specialists, in others against the will of the women’s male counterparts. However, in most cases we see both, acceptance and resistance. Whether silently or with great fanfare, women grasp new opportunities to occupy positions of leadership. Ten in-depth case studies analyzing culturally, historically and geographically unique situations explore the historical background, contemporary trajectories, and impact of the emergence of new powerful female agencies in mostly conservative Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions.

Challenging problems both attract and repel us. They frustrate us, accelerate our pulses, cause ulcers, and perhaps even curtail our lifespans. On the other hand, the knotty problems of life offer us food for thought, sustaining our creativity, and adding emotional spice to the human experience. We encounter difficult tasks day in and day out. The solutions to these problems must be sought with resourcefulness and creativity, for until now we have had little insight into the nature of these tasks, and even less into methods for resolving them. This unique book explores the nature of challenging problems in all walks of life, and describes the creative techniques for addressing them. It is particularly relevant for problems that admit no obvious solution, whether they concern scientific knowledge, technology, the arts, or social situations. By understanding the dynamics of problem solving in general, the author argues, we can better organize the pursuit of specific projects. The initial phase involves crystallizing our objectives and developing a coherent plan. The next step is to evaluate the results and determine whether the work should be concluded, begun anew, or given up altogether. With this general strategy, even seemingly overwhelming problems can be approached systematically and efficiently. The author goes beyond the normal distinction between routine and innovative activities, defining the role of creativity in novel decision-making. In addition, he distills the existing literature on creativity, innovation, and project management to present a concise set of strategies and practices that can be applied in a myriad of settings ranging from university laboratories to corporate planning centers. For the sake of concreteness, a number of examples from research and development environments demonstrate the book's basic principles in action, showing how even the most difficult problems can yield to knowledgeable ingenuity. This chapter argues that designing management control systems to enhance creativity requires a fundamental shift in how these systems are conceptualized, namely, as enablers of creativity. Concepts such as diagnostic and interactive, enabling and coercive, and inspirational and directional provide a head start in this respect. A new research agenda is proposed around three main lines: first, the exploration of traditional control concepts in an environment where intrinsic motivation dominates; second, the study of how management control systems are designed and used in settings where aesthetic creativity plays a central role; and, third, an investigation of the differences across management control systems as creativity, organizational design, and people’s characteristics vary. Research focused on the link between management control systems and intrinsic motivation, aesthetic creativity, and contextual variables will enhance our understanding of a topic that is central to innovation and increasingly important in establishing competitive advantage.

This chapter examines the numerous modern psychological studies which sought to establish connections between mental illness and human creativity or intelligence, arguing that these studies have a direct but often occluded lineage from the textual and biographical legacy of Romanticism in the nineteenth century. A line of transmission can be traced in which lists of ‘geniuses’, and illustrative anecdotes of their supposed irrationality and ideal or hallucinatory insanity, were absorbed directly from early critical and biographical writing about Blake, Coleridge, Shelley, Clare, and others, into a scientific (or pseudoscientific) tradition of writing which reached its apex in the 1890s, in works by Galton, Maudsley Lombroso, and their imitators, most notoriously Nordau and others on degeneration. The scientific, cultural, and political consequences of this tradition are considered as a demonstration of what might be at stake in the genealogy of the Romantic mad poet, and the circumspection necessary in its invocation.
