Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutant and wildtype glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) often show overlapping features on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), representing a diagnostic challenge. Deep learning showed promising results for IDH identification in mixed low/high grade glioma populations; however, a GBM-specific model is still lacking in the literature. Our aim was to develop a GBM-tailored deep-learning model for IDH prediction by applying convoluted neural networks (CNN) on multiparametric MRI. We selected 100 adult patients with pathologically demonstrated WHO grade IV gliomas and IDH testing. MRI sequences included: MPRAGE, T1, T2, FLAIR, rCBV and ADC. The model consisted of a 4-block 2D CNN, applied to each MRI sequence. Probability of IDH mutation was obtained from the last dense layer of a softmax activation function. Model performance was evaluated in the test cohort considering categorical cross-entropy loss (CCEL) and accuracy. Calculated performance was: rCBV (accuracy 83%, CCEL 0.64), T1 (accuracy 77%, CCEL 1.4), FLAIR (accuracy 77%, CCEL 1.98), T2 (accuracy 67%, CCEL 2.41), MPRAGE (accuracy 66%, CCEL 2.55). Lower performance was achieved on ADC maps. We present a GBM-specific deep-learning model for IDH mutation prediction, with a maximal accuracy of 83% on rCBV maps. Highest predictivity achieved on perfusion images possibly reflects the known link between IDH and neoangiogenesis through the hypoxia inducible factor.

A wireless monitoring and automatic protection system for laboratory safety is proposed to solve the security problems in chemistry and chemical engineering laboratories (CCEL). The system is based on a wireless sensor network (WSN), including indoor wireless security monitoring node, information aggregation and management node, portable handheld terminal, and laboratory security information management system. Each indoor safety wireless monitoring node can monitor the laboratory security information (for example, fire information, toxic gas content, abnormal sound in chemistry, and chemical engineering laboratory) and control the corresponding protection device. The portable handheld terminal can remind the safety responsible person to check the safety status of the laboratory remotely and can issue corresponding operation and control instructions. According to the instructions it sends, the indoor security wireless monitoring and control node can start the corresponding automatic protection device. The experimental results demonstrate that the system can realize all-weather online monitoring of indoor safety information, ensuring that some important scientific research experiments can be conducted continuously and safely, significantly reduced the workload of laboratory managers, and precisely reported the location and conditions of accidents; the loss caused by the accident can be minimized based on the automatic protection device. The system can also be used in dangerous goods warehouse and inflammable and explosive places.

While teacher educators implement diverse student teaching placements for preservice teachers as a means of bridging the cultural mismatch in classrooms around the United States, researchers have only recently begun to tap into the role that preservice teachers’ “whiteness” plays in their ideologies. As such, the purpose of this study was to better understand how one white, female preservice teacher made meaning of her experiences during a cross-cultural experiential learning (CCEL) student teaching placement abroad. Analyzing if and how previous intercultural interactions were drawn upon while abroad, as well as how experiences abroad were employed once returning to the US, findings suggest that cultural competency does not directly equate to recognizing whiteness and the privileges associated.

In this study, I focused on the impact of cooperative learning on the development of social skills in English as a foreign language (EFL) tertiary students. Participants were 2 randomly selected classes of students from a university in the north of China. A pretest-posttest control group quasiexperimental design was employed for the comparison of the impact of the cooperative learning approach with that of traditional whole-class instruction on 8 aspects of social skills: self-confidence, sense of cohesion, initiative in socialization, being positive, checking for understanding, equal participation and accountability, acceptance and empathy, and conflict management. These aspects form 8 subscales of the Social Skills Scale for Chinese College English Learners (SSS-CCEL; Ning, 2010), which the participants completed. Findings suggest substantial differences in favor of cooperative learning in the improvement of students' overall social skills, and in particular in the skills of equal participation and accountability.

Balloon angioplasty-induced neointimal hyperplasia remains a clinical problem that must be resolved. The bioactivities of the Crossostephium chinense extract (CCE) have demonstrated potential in preventing the progression of restenosis. The present study evaluated whether CCE can suppress balloon angioplasty-induced neointima formation and elucidated its possible pharmacological mechanisms. A rat model of carotid arterial balloon angioplasty was established to evaluate the inhibitory effect of CCEs on neointimal hyperplasia. Two cell lines, A10 vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and RAW264.7 macrophages, were used to investigate the potential regulatory activities and pharmacological mechanisms of CCEs in cell proliferation and migration and in inflammation. Our in vitro results indicated that CCE3, the ethanolic extract of C. chinense, exerted the strongest growth inhibitory and antimigratory effects on VSMCs. CCE3 blocked the activation of focal adhesion kinase, platelet-derived growth factor receptor-β (PDGFRB), and its downstream molecules (AKT and mTOR) and reduced the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2. In addition, our findings revealed that CCE3 significantly increased the expression of miRNA-132, an inhibitory regulator of inflammation and restenosis, and suppressed the expression of inflammation-related molecules (inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin- (IL-) 1β, and IL-6). Our in vivo study results indicated that balloon injury-induced neointimal hyperplasia was inhibited by CCE3. CCE3 could reduce neointima formation in balloon-injured arteries, and this effect may be partially attributed to the CCE3-induced suppression of PDGFRB-mediated downstream pathways and inflammation-related molecules.

Background Long noncoding RNAs (IncRNAs) play essential roles in tumor progression. Aberrant colorectal cancer-associated IncRNA (CCAL) has been found in colorectal cancer. However, the function of IncRNA CCAL in osteosarcoma (OS) remains unclear. Methods Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was performed to measure CCAL expression in OS tissues and adjacent nontumor tissues. The correlation betweent CCAL expression and clinicopathological features and prognosis was also analyzed. In addition, the function of CCAL was further evaluated by cell proliferation, migration and invasion assays. Results We showed that CCAL was significantly up-regulated in OS tissues compared with adjacent nontumor tissues. Increased expression of CCAL was correlated with advanced TNM stage and metastasis. Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that patients with high CCAL expression had lower overall survival than those with low CCAL expression. Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that CCAL expression might be an independent prognostic factor for OS patients. In addition, functional assays showed that decreased CCAL expression could inhibit OS cell proliferation, migration and invasion ability. Conclusions Our findings suggested that CCAL plays critical roles in OS progression and could act as a therapeutic target in the treatment of OS.

ABSTRACTIn the present study, the efficacy of Cymbopogon citratus D.C. Stapf. essential oil (CCEO) to provoke a 5-log CFU/ml (5-log) inactivation in a mixed composite of Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis in pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merril) juice (4°C) was assessed. Moreover, the effects of CCEO on the physicochemical and sensory quality parameters of pineapple juice were evaluated. The MIC of CCEO was 5 μl/ml against the composite mix examined. For L. monocytogenes and E. coli inoculated in juice containing CCEO (5, 2.5, and 1.25 μl/ml), a ≥5-log reduction was detected after 15 min of exposure. This same result was obtained for Salmonella Enteritidis incubated alone in pineapple juice containing CCEO at 5 and 2.5 μl/ml. Overall, Salmonella Enteritidis was the most tolerant and L. monocytogenes was the most sensitive to CCEO. The physicochemical properties (pH, titratable acidic [citric acid per 100 g], and soluble solids) of pineapple juice containing CCEO (2.5 and 1.25 μl/ml) were maintained. Juice containing CCEO (2.5 and 1.25 μl/ml) exhibited similar scores for odor, appearance, and viscosity compared with juice without CCEO. However, unsatisfactory changes in taste and aftertaste were observed in juices containing CCEO. These results suggest that CCEO could be used as an alternative antimicrobial compound to ensure the safety of pineapple juice, although CCEO at the tested concentrations negatively impacted its taste. Therefore, further studies are needed to determine the balance between microbial safety and taste acceptability of pineapple juice containing CCEO.

ObjectiveWhile the contribution of B-cells to SLE is well established, its role in chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CCLE) remains unclear. Here, we compare B-cell and serum auto-antibody profiles between patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), CCLE, and overlap conditions.MethodsB-cells were compared by flow cytometry amongst healthy controls, CCLE without systemic lupus (CCLE+/SLE−) and SLE patients with (SLE+/CCLE+) or without CCLE (SLE+/CCLE−). Serum was analyed for autoreactive 9G4+, anti-double-stranded DNA, anti-chromatin and anti-RNA antibodies by ELISA and for anti-RNA binding proteins (RBP) by luciferase immunoprecipitation.ResultsPatients with CCLE+/SLE− share B-cell abnormalities with SLE including decreased unswitched memory and increased effector B-cells albeit at a lower level than SLE patients. Similarly, both SLE and CCLE+/SLE- patients have elevated 9G4+ IgG autoantibodies despite lower levels of anti-nucleic acid and anti-RBP antibodies in CCLE+/SLE−. CCLE+/SLE− patients could be stratified into those with SLE-like B-cell profiles and a separate group with normal B-cell profiles. The former group was more serologically active and more likely to have disseminated skin lesions.ConclusionCCLE displays perturbations in B-cell homeostasis and partial B-cell tolerance breakdown. Our study demonstrates that this entity is immunologically heterogeneous and includes a disease segment whose B-cell compartment resembles SLE and is clinically associated with enhanced serological activity and more extensive skin disease. This picture suggests that SLE-like B-cell changes in primary CCLE may help identify patients at risk for subsequent development of SLE. B-cell profiling in CCLE might also indentify candidates who would benefit from B-cell targeted therapies.

OBJECT The frontal and insular fiber network in humans remains largely unknown. This study investigated the connectivity of the frontal and anterior insular network in humans using cortico-cortical evoked potential (CCEP). METHODS This retrospective analysis included 18 patients with medically intractable focal epilepsy who underwent stereoelectroencephalography and CCEP. Alternating 1-Hz electrical stimuli were delivered to parts of the frontal lobe and anterior insula (prefrontal cortex [PFC], ventrolateral and dorsolateral premotor area [vPM and dPM, respectively], presupplementary motor area [pre-SMA], SMA, frontal operculum, and anterior insula). A total of 40–60 stimuli were averaged in each trial to obtain CCEP responses. The distribution of CCEP was evaluated by calculating the root mean square of CCEP responses. RESULTS Stimulation of the PFC elicited prominent CCEP responses in the medial PFC and PMs over the ipsilateral hemisphere. Stimulation of the vPM and dPM induced CCEP responses in the ipsilateral frontoparietal areas. Stimulation of the pre-SMA induced CCEP responses in the ipsilateral medial and lateral frontal areas and contralateral pre-SMA, whereas stimulation of the SMA induced CCEP responses in the bilateral frontoparietal areas. Stimulation of the frontal operculum induced CCEP responses in the ipsilateral insula and temporal operculum. CCEPs were observed in the ipsilateral medial, lateral frontal, and frontotemporal operculum in the anterior insular stimulation. Stimulation of the vPM and SMA led to the network in the dominant hemisphere being more developed. CONCLUSIONS Various regions within the frontal lobe and anterior insula were linked to specific ipsilateral and contralateral regions, which may reflect distinct functional roles.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress is closely related to all aspects of cancer. Cosmos caudatus ethanolic extract (CCEE) has been proved to have antioxidant effect that inhibited cancer cell growth due to its bioactive compounds such as catechin, quercetin and chlorogenic acid. This study aimed to evaluate antioxidant and anticancer activity of CCEE and its compounds.METHODS: Total phenol was measured according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Catechin, quercetin and chlorogenic acid contained in CCEE were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Antioxidant activity was evaluated by 2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS)-reducing activity, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) activity test. The cytotoxic activity of CCEE was determined by MTS [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium] assay on HeLa cells.RESULTS: The result showed that total phenol of CCEE was 181.64±0.93 µg Cathecin/mg extract. ABTSreducing activity test showed that catechin had the highest activity (2.90±0.04 µg/mL), while CCEE had moderate activity compared to other compounds. FRAP activity test demonstrated that catechin had the highest activity (315.83 µM Fe(II)/µg) compared to other compounds. DPPH scavenging activity of CCEE was 22.82±0.05 µg/mL. Cytotoxicity test on HeLa cell showed that CCEE had lower activity (inhibitory concentration (IC)50= 89.90±1.30 µg/mL) compared to quercetin (IC50 = 13.30±0.64 µg/ mL).CONCLUSION: CCEE has the lowest antioxidant activity compared to quercetin, catechin, and chlorogenic acid and has the lowest anticancer activity compared to quercetin. However, CCEE and its compounds has potential as antioxidant and anticancer properties.KEYWORDS: antioxidant, anticancer, catechin, Cosmos caudatus, quercetin

Long noncoding RNA CCAL has been reported to promote tumor progression in various human cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma, osteosarcoma, and colorectal cancer. However, the role of CCAL in papillary thyroid cancer remains largely unknown. In the present study, we found that the expression of CCAL was upregulated in papillary thyroid tumor tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues. Moreover, the expression of CCAL was positively related with papillary thyroid cancer severity and TNM stage and predicated poor prognosis. Besides, we found that knockdown of CCAL significantly inhibited papillary thyroid cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro and reduced tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. We found that knockdown of CCAL dramatically decreased the expression of NOTCH1 and suppressed the activation of the NOTCH1 signaling pathway. Furthermore, overexpression of NOTCH1 rescued the proliferation, migration, and invasion in papillary thyroid cancer cells. Taken together, our data indicated that CCAL promoted papillary thyroid cancer development and progression by activation of the NOTCH1 pathway, which provided a new insight on the design of therapeutic targets.

To find out the penetration of PF into the wood cell wall and its effects onthe mechanical properties in the cellular level, the elastic modulus and hardness of secondary wall (S2layer) and compound corner middle lamella (CCML) near PF bond line region were determined by nanoindentation. Compare to the reference cell walls (unaffected by PF), PF penetration into the wood tissues showed improved elastic modulus and hardness. And the mechanical properties decreased slowly with the increasing the distance from the bond line, which are attributed to the effects of PF penetration into S2layer and CCML. The reduced elastic modulus variations were from18.8 to 14.4 GPa for S2layer, and from10.1 to 7.65 GPa for CCML. The hardness was from 0.67 to 0.52 GPa for S2layer, and from 0.65 to 0.52 GPa for CCML. In each test viewpoint place, the average hardness of CCML was almost as high as that of S2layer, but the reduced elastic modulus was about 50% less than that of S2layer. But the increase ratio of mechanical properties was close. All the results showed PF penetrates into the CCML. The penetration behavior and penetration depth from bond line were similar in both S2layer and CCML.

OBJECTIVERecent neuroimaging studies suggest that intractable epilepsy involves pathological functional networks as well as strong epileptogenic foci. Combining cortico-cortical evoked potential (CCEP) recording and tractography is a useful strategy for mapping functional connectivity in normal and pathological networks. In this study, the authors sought to demonstrate the efficacy of preoperative combined CCEP recording, high gamma activity (HGA) mapping, and tractography for surgical planning, and of intraoperative CCEP measures for confirmation of selective pathological network disconnection.METHODSThe authors treated 4 cases of intractable epilepsy. Diffusion tensor imaging–based tractography data were acquired before the first surgery for subdural grid implantation. HGA and CCEP investigations were done after the first surgery, before the second surgery was performed to resect epileptogenic foci, with continuous CCEP monitoring during resection.RESULTSAll 4 patients in this report had measurable pathological CCEPs. The mean negative peak-1 latency of normal CCEPs related to language functions was 22.2 ± 3.5 msec, whereas pathological CCEP latencies varied between 18.1 and 22.4 msec. Pathological CCEPs diminished after complete disconnection in all cases. At last follow-up, all of the patients were in long-term postoperative seizure-free status, although 1 patient still suffered from visual aura every other month.CONCLUSIONSCombined CCEP measurement, HGA mapping, and tractography greatly facilitated targeted disconnection of pathological networks in this study. Although CCEP recording requires technical expertise, it allows for assessment of pathological network involvement in intractable epilepsy and may improve seizure outcome.

Abstract Magnesium alloys on the surface of billets might be refined by chilled casting process, but the grains of the center of billets are coarse, and there are a lot of void defects in the center of billets. These defects can be eliminated by hot extrusion, while fibrous microstructures and strong basal textures might be formed. This paper presents a new short process technology which includes chilled casting and extrusion-shear (CCES). It is crucial to understand the effects of die structures on the deformation behaviors, strain distribution and load requirements. Three selections of processes and die structures were done by simulations and experiments which include CCES process with 4 times consecutive shearings plastic deformation, CCES process by lateral extrusion with 90° shearing angle, and combined CCES process mode. The research results show the third selection is recommended. Three-dimensional (3D) geometric models with different channel angles (30°, 45°) for the third selection CCES dies were designed. The heterogeneities of plastic deformation by CCES dies with different channel angles were analyzed from the simulation results. The simulation results show strains decrease with rising of channel angles. The lower channel angles improve the deformation heterogeneity of magnesium alloy billets. Smaller channel angles obtain higher strains and produce tinier sub-grains. The forces of the CCES process decrease with rising of channel angles. The analysis results showed that finer and uniform microstructures can be obtained if channel angles in the CCES dies are appropriate.

Beyond the utilitarian and social benefits, this study suggests that it is important for event studies to explore the psychological and emotional meanings of CCE experiences through an experiential lens and that the competitive battleground in event industry should lie in staging memorable experiences during CCEs.

The Chronic Ear Survey (CES) is a valid, disease-specific measure for the evaluation of health status and treatment effectiveness for adults with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). This study compares the validation properties of the English and Chinese versions of the CES. The CES was translated into Mandarin Chinese by means of a parallel model. The Chinese version of the CES (CCES) was administered to 103 patients in a prospective manner, then was validated according to established criteria for reliability, validity, and longitudinal sensitivity. The CCES demonstrated good test-retest reliability and internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.81). The CCES significantly correlated with the Mandarin Chinese (Taiwan) version of the generic 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (TSF-36). The standardized response mean for the CCES total score was 2.1, indicating excellent sensitivity to clinical change. This validation study demonstrated that the performance characteristics of the CCES were equivalent to those of the English-version CES. The CCES is a valid tool for evaluation of adults with CSOM among the Chinese-speaking population.

The collective commercial construction land (CCCL) reform in China has attracted considerable attention worldwide, but studies on the influencing factors and performance of governance modes for CCCL marketization are still in their infancy. First, by deconstructing CCCL, this study developed a conceptual framework from the perspective of transaction cost economics. Based on a series of surveys, interviews, and closed questionnaires in two pilot areas, this study determined the influencing factors for governance mode choice for CCCL marketization through comparative case studies and compared the performance of the government-led and self-organized modes. This study concluded that asset specificity, uncertainty, and frequency were the main influencing factors for transaction costs, which could influence the choice of governance mode for CCCL marketization. Moreover, the characteristics of the two aforementioned governance modes, transaction costs, and specific revenue distribution resulted in different marketization performances.

Abstract The anthelmintic resistance stimulated the search for strategies for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes, including the use of free essential oils or its nanoemulsion. This study evaluated the anthelmintic efficacy of Cymbopogon citratus essential oil (CcEO) and C. citratus essential oil nanoemulsion (CcEOn). Pysicochemical analyses were performed. The in vitro effect was determined using the egg hatch test (EHT) on Haemonchus contortus and in vivo effect was evaluated in sheep infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. The animals were treated with CcEO (500 mg/kg) or CcEOn (450 mg/kg) for the fecal egg count (FEC) and the determination of worm burden. The main component of CcEO was citral. The CcEO content in the nanoemulsion was 20% (v/v), and the mean particle size was 248 nm. In EHT, CcEO and CcEOn (1.25 mg/mL) inhibited larval hatching by 98.4 and 97.1%, respectively. Three animals treated with CcEO died whereas in the group treated with CcEOn one animal died. The FEC and total worm burden of the treated groups did not differ from the negative control (p>0.05). The CcEOn showed efficacy only on H. contortus (p<0.05). In conclusion, nanoencapsulation reduced toxicity and increased efficacy on H. contortus.

We have previously done numerical simulations using the two-fluid model implemented in the CFD software FLUENT6.3.26 to investigate effects of shape of a flow channel and its size on CCFL (countercurrent flow limitation) characteristics in PWR hot leg models. We confirmed that CCFL characteristics in the hot leg could be well correlated with the Wallis parameters in the diameter range of0.05 m≤D≤0.75 m. In the present study, we did numerical simulations using the two-fluid model for the air-water tests withD=0.0254 m to determine why CCFL characteristics forD=0.0254 m were severer compared with those in the range,0.05 m≤D≤0.75 m. The predicted CCFL characteristics agreed with the data forD=0.0254 m and indicated that the CCFL difference betweenD=0.0254 m and0.05 mm≤D≤0.75 mm was caused by the size effect and not by other factors.

The Rhesus (Rh) blood group is the most polymorphic human blood group and it is clinically significant in transfusion medicine. Especially, D antigen is the most important and highly immunogenic antigen. Due to anti-D, it is the cause of the hemolytic disease of the newborn and transfusion reaction. About 0.1%–0.5% of Asian people are RhD-negative, whereas in the Thai population, the RhD-negative blood type only occurs in 0.3%. Approximately 10%–30% of RhD-negative in Eastern Asian people actually were D-elute (DEL) phenotype, the very weak D antigen that cannot be detected by indirect antiglobulin test (IAT). There are many reports about anti-D immunization in RhD-negative recipients through the transfusion of red blood cells from individuals with DEL phenotype. D-elute phenotype screening in Thai RhD-negative blood donors was studied to distinguish true RhD-negative from DEL phenotype. A total of 254 Thai serologically RhD-negative blood donors were tested for RhCE phenotypes and anti-D adsorption/elution test. In addition, RhC(+) samples were tested for RHD 1227A allele by SSP-PCR technique. The RhD-negative phenotype samples consisted of 131 ccee, 4 ccEe, 1 ccEE, 101 Ccee, 16 CCee, and 1 CcEe. The 42 Ccee and 8 CCee phenotype samples were typed as DEL phenotype and 96% of DEL samples were positive for RHD 1227A allele. The incidence of RhC(+) was 46.4%, and 48 of the 118 RhC(+) samples were positive for both anti-D adsorption/elution test and SSP-PCR technique for RHD 1227A allele. The sensitivity and specificity were 96% and 100%, respectively, for RHD 1227A detection as compared with the adsorption/elution test. In conclusion, RhC(+) phenotype can combine with anti-D adsorption/elution test and RHD 1227A allele SSP-PCR technique for distinguishing true RhD-negative from DEL phenotype.

Croton cordiifoliusBaill. is a shrub known as “quebra-faca” and is used to treat inflammation, pain, wounds, and gastrointestinal disturbances in the semiarid region in the northeast of Brazil. In an ethnobotanical survey in the state of Pernambuco, “quebra-faca” use was cited in 33% of the interviews. Thus, we decided to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of the essential oil fromC. cordiifolius(CcEO). Chemical analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed 1,8-cineole (25.09%) andα-phellandrene (15.43%) as major constituents. Antinociceptive activity was evaluated using murine models of chemically induced pain (writhing induced by acetic acid, formalin, capsaicin, and glutamate tests). Opioid and central nervous systems (CNS) involvement were also investigated. Regarding antinociceptive activity, CcEO (50 and 100 mg/kg) reduced the number of writhing responses induced by acetic acid and decreased the licking times in both phases of the formalin test. CcEO also was evaluated in capsaicin- and glutamate-induced nociception. While no effect was observed in the capsaicin test, CcEO (100 mg/kg) was effective in the glutamate test. Naloxone, an opioid antagonist, did not affect the antinociceptive activity of CcEO in writhing test. In conclusion, the antinociceptive effect of CcEO could be explained, at least in part, by inhibition of the glutamatergic system.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to employ an emerging phenomenon in China concerning collaborative carbon emission reduction (CCER) to investigate: first, the coordination of suppliers and manufacturers within supply chains to reduce carbon emissions, and second, the role of governmental policy in facilitating this process. Design/methodology/approach This paper draws upon evolutionary game theory to develop an evolutionary game model for CCER for suppliers and manufacturers within supply chains. This includes a detailed analysis of the evolutionary direction and process in different areas, both with, and in the absence of, governmental subsidies. Findings The results demonstrate that CCER is path dependent and that its evolutionary process is influenced by the following four factors: the initial status within supply chains; the cost; the additional benefit; and the investment risk related to CCER. The research also reveals that the reward provided by manufacturers is rational over the long term, due to the excessive cost of incentives potentially preventing the implementation of CCER. Originality/value This study represents the first attempt to investigate CCER within supply chains through the application of an evolutionary game-theoretic model. The investigation of multiple factors in the model will deepen understanding of the collaborative role required for the carbon emission reduction.

Object The objective in the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEP) monitoring for the intraoperative assessment of speech function during resection of brain tumors. Methods Intraoperative monitoring of CCEP was applied in 13 patients (mean age 34 ± 14 years) during the removal of neoplasms located within or close to language-related structures in the dominant cerebral hemisphere. For this purpose strip electrodes were positioned above the frontal language area (FLA) and temporal language area (TLA), which were identified with direct cortical stimulation and/or preliminary mapping with the use of implanted chronic subdural grid electrodes. The CCEP response was defined as the highest observed negative peak in either direction of stimulation. In 12 cases the tumor was resected during awake craniotomy. Results An intraoperative CCEP response was not obtained in one case because of technical problems. In the other patients it was identified from the FLA during stimulation of the TLA (7 cases) and from the TLA during stimulation of the FLA (5 cases), with a mean peak latency of 83 ± 15 msec. During tumor resection the CCEP response was unchanged in 5 cases, decreased in 4, and disappeared in 3. Postoperatively, all 7 patients with a decreased or absent CCEP response after lesion removal experienced deterioration in speech function. In contrast, in 5 cases with an unchanged intraoperative CCEP response, speaking abilities after surgery were preserved at the preoperative level, except in one patient who experienced not dysphasia, but dysarthria due to pyramidal tract injury. This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). The time required to recover speech function was also significantly associated with the type of intraoperative change in CCEP recordings (p < 0.01) and was, on average, 1.8 ± 1.0, 5.5 ± 1.0, and 11.0 ± 3.6 months, respectively, if the response was unchanged, was decreased, or had disappeared. Conclusions Monitoring CCEP is feasible during the resection of brain tumors affecting language-related cerebral structures. In the intraoperative evaluation of speech function, it can be a helpful adjunct or can be used in its direct assessment with cortical and subcortical mapping during awake craniotomy. It can also be used to predict the prognosis of language disorders after surgery and decide on the optimal resection of a neoplasm.

The drinking water is very qualitatively monitored. Despite this monitoring, there is a deterioration in the Free Residual Chlorine Concentration (CCRL) along the drinking water distribution network of the commune of Cotonou. The objective of studying areas of consumer vulnerability where the CCRL reaches critical thresholds (<0.1 mg / l). To achieve this, water samples were taken from various locations in the supply network every day, from 04/30/2018. The assay method used is called N-Diethyl-P-phenylene Diamine (DPD) with the use of a DR / 890 colorimeter. This work reveal that the CCRL undergoes degradation during its delivery to the consumer's taps with average concentrations mainly above the standard in force [0.1; 0.8 mg / l] at the 5% threshold. The work made it possible to establish a linear model for predicting CCRL concentration as a function of distance and to identify areas of vulnerability in the study area.

363 Background: To investigate if retroperitoneal craniocaudal nodal length (CCNL) or nodal volume (NV) predicts relapse risk in clinical stage I testicular cancer. Methods: This institutional review board-approved, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant study retrospectively reviewed 826 patients with testicular cancer. One hundred eighteen out of 826 patients forming the analytic cohort had stage I disease and either more than or equal to 2 years surveillance or retroperitoneal lymph node dissection with no adjuvant chemotherapy. 3D NVs and CCNL were measured by two attending physicians in consensus. Association between relapse risk and CCNL/NV was evaluated using univariable/multivariable logistic regression analysis adjusted for known prognostic factors. Results: Sixty six out of 118 patients (56%) had nonseminomatous germ cell tumor (NSGCT) and 52 (44%) had seminomatous germ cell tumor (SGCT). Twenty one percent (25 out of 118) of patients relapsed: 24% (16 out of 66) for NSGCT and 17% (9 out of 52) for SGCT. Eighty percent of relapses were limited to the retroperitoneum; 90% of these were at the site of the largest lymph node. CCNL proved to be an independent risk factor in NSGCT using a multivariable logistic regression model adjusting for other potential known risk factors of embryonal predominance (EP) and lymphovascular invasion (LVI). For every 3 mm increase in CCNL, the risk of relapse increased by 52% (odds ratio [OR]=1.52; 95% CI=1.03- 2.25). For patients with SGCT, only the primary tumor size was an independent risk factor for relapse (OR=1.34; 95% CI=1.02-1.75). Conclusions: In NSGCT, CCNL was shown to be associated with increased risk of relapse independently of other known risk factors. If validated in a larger cohort, CCNL could provide important additional information used to inform management decisions in these patients.

Abstract Climatology and interannual variability of convectively coupled equatorial wave (CCEW) activity, including the mixed Rossby–gravity (MRG), tropical-depression-type (TD-type), equatorial Rossby (ER), and Kelvin waves, are investigated using the satellite-observed brightness temperature data from the Cloud Archive User Service. The monthly activity of CCEWs is represented by the root mean square of the daily filtered convections in each month based on the Wheeler–Kiladis filtering method. More precise seasonal cycles of CCEW activity are obtained from the meridional and zonal mean climatology. Interannual variance of CCEW activity is further investigated. Kelvin wave activity has maximum interannual variance over the eastern Pacific, while the other three waves are most variable in the intertropical convergence zone. The four active CCEWs all have significant correlation with the background convection and local sea surface temperature (SST) over the central and eastern Pacific, but they are not significantly correlated over other regions. The El Niño events may induce more trapped and active CCEWs over the central and eastern Pacific but weaker MRG and TD-type waves over the warm pool. In contrast, the El Niño Modoki has much weaker correlation with CCEW activity. CCEW activity over the southeastern Indian Ocean is negatively correlated with the Indian Ocean dipole, while that over the western and northern Indian Ocean may be determined by atmospheric internal disturbances. The tropical southern Atlantic mode is the strongest Atlantic SST anomaly mode correlated with the Atlantic CCEW activity.

An experimental study on countercurrent flow limitation (CCFL) in vertical pipes is carried out. Effects of upper tank geometry and water levels in the upper and lower tanks on CCFL characteristics are investigated for air-water two-phase flows at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The following conclusions are obtained: (1) CCFL characteristics for different pipe diameters are well correlated using the Kutateladze number if the tank geometry and the water levels are the same; (2) CCFL occurs at the junction between the pipe and the upper tank both for the rectangular and cylindrical tanks, and CCFL with the cylindrical tank occurs not only at the junction but also inside the pipe at high gas flow rates and small pipe diameters; (3) the flow rate of water entering into the vertical pipe at the junction to the rectangular upper tank is lower than that to the cylindrical tank because of the presence of low frequency first-mode sloshing in the rectangular tank; (4) increases in the water level in the upper tank and in the air volume in the lower tank increase water penetration into the pipe, and therefore, they mitigate the flow limitation.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) probes that hybridize to the 5' and 3' regions of the Rh CcEe gene and the closely related D gene were used in a Southern analysis. The D gene was absent in all ccee phenotypes examined. The CCee phenotypes showed three Rh D polymorphisms: one donor lacked the D gene, one donor had a partial deletion on one D gene at the 3' region, and the remaining donor appeared to have one normal D gene within the intron/exon regions examined. We conclude that, while the D gene may be absent in the majority of Rh D-negative phenotypes, rarer polymorphisms also occur that prevent expression of the D antigen resulting in the Rh D-negative phenotype.

In this study, an investigation was carried out to clarify the mechanism of countercurrent flow limitation (CCFL) or flooding, that is, limitations in the falling water mass flux in countercurrent two-phase flow in vertical channels, and to identify the effects of predominant parameters regarding CCFL, adopting the criterion that the CCFL condition be given by an envelope of momentum equation applied for the entire length of the channel with respect to any void fraction. As a result, it was found that the analytical model proposed could adequately predict all existing experimental results investigated in this study. In the channel configuration, circular, rectangular, and annular or planar channels, channel dimensions of diameter, gap size, width or circumference, and length, interfacial and wall friction, water injection mode, and inlet water subcooling were dominant parameters. Therefore, both the mechanism and the quantitative effects of CCFL have been identified.

We focus on a number of idiosyncrasies of cultural and creative entrepreneurs (CCEs) to study CCEs’ capacity of resilience under times of downturn (economic, financial and debt crisis). We analyse CC firms’ demography (born and dead), trends and performance and the association between subsidies received and firm survival. We look at mostly micro firms in a country where CCEs are particularly challenged from the financial perspective, namely Portugal. We exploit the unique availability of accounting micro data at private firm level in a time span of 8 years (2004-2011), which allows to include the effects of the latest financial crisis, and to understand the evolution of the economic success criterion. The obtained results about the impact of subsidies on survival are interesting in both CCEs and policy perspectives, suggesting a positive impact of subsidies in periods of downturn, and negative impact of subsidies in periods of growth of the economy. Further, CC firms revealed to be more dynamic than other firms in other sectors.

Abstract The presence of fibrillar structures (FS) in the cell corner middle lamella (CCML) regions was demonstrated in several species of plants. The FS in the CCML of bass wood, oak wood, and bamboo became clearly visible after removal of lignin by wood decay fungi. The occurrence of FS in the CCML was also confirmed by examining early stages of cell wall formation in silver poplar, Japanese red pine, Arabidopsis and alfalfa. The fibrillar texture became increasingly less defined with the onset of lignification as the interfibrillar spaces were masked by lignin polymers and the fibrillar network became embedded within the lignin matrix. The FS stained positively with PATAg and ruthenium red, which is interpreted to be an indicator of the presence of structural polysaccharides (non-cellulosics and pectins). Our work demonstrated that fibrillar network is a characteristic feature of CCML of plant cell walls that is clearly visible prior to lignification of this cell wall region, but becomes invisible after the deposition of lignin.

Real-word large-scale optimisation problems often result in local optima due to their large search space and complex objective function. Hence, traditional evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are not suitable for these problems. Distributed EA, such as a cooperative co-evolutionary algorithm (CCEA), can solve these problems efficiently. It can decompose a large-scale problem into smaller sub-problems and evolve them independently. Further, the CCEA population diversity avoids local optima. Besides, MapReduce, an open-source platform, provides a ready-to-use distributed, scalable, and fault-tolerant infrastructure to parallelise the developed algorithm using the map and reduce features. The CCEA can be distributed and executed in parallel using the MapReduce model to solve large-scale optimisations in less computing time. The effectiveness of CCEA, together with the MapReduce, has been proven in the literature for large-scale optimisations. This article presents the cooperative co-evolution, MapReduce model, and associated techniques suitable for large-scale optimisation problems.

c-Type cytochromes are a widespread class of proteins that play a vital role in the energy-conserving metabolism of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The key event in cytochrome c biogenesis is the covalent attachment of the haem cofactor to two (or rarely one) cysteine residues arranged in a haem c-binding motif such as CX2–4CH, CXXCK or X3CH. This reaction is catalysed by the membrane-bound enzyme CCHL (cytochrome c haem lyase). Different CCHLs have been described and some of them are dedicated to distinct haem c-binding motifs of cytochromes that are encoded in the vicinity of the respective CCHL gene. Various bacterial genomes contain multiple copies of CCHL-encoding genes, suggesting the presence of non-conventional or even as yet unrecognized haem c-binding motifs. This assumption is exemplified in the present study using the proteobacterium Wolinella succinogenes as a model organism whose genome encodes three CCHL isoenzymes. The discovery of a novel conserved multihaem cytochrome c (MccA) is described.

Cystitis cystica et glandularis (CCEG) is widely believed to be innocuous and self-limiting. We report a case of a 32-year-old male patient who was found to have gross bilateral hydroureter and hydronephrosis and an estimated glomerular filtration rate of 3 ml/min/1.73 m2. Cystoscopy revealed extensive cystic and nodular lesions involving most of the bladder urothelium, which proved to be CCEG on histopathological analysis. Retrograde and anterograde stents could not be inserted due to obstruction of the ureters at the level of the vesicoureteric junction. Percutaneous nephrostomies were subsequently inserted. Although there was evidence of improvement of the CCEG on follow-up cystoscopy, no improvement of renal function, despite decompression with percutaneous nephrostomies, was seen. He was subsequently placed on the waiting list for a renal transplant. We believe this to be the only known case reported of florid CCEG obstructing the upper urinary tracts bilaterally, causing irreversible renal injury.

Background: Localized chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CCLE), also known as discoid lupus erythematosus, is one of the most prevalent canine autoimmune skin diseases. Histopathology is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of CCLE and the accuracy of which can be increased by use of direct immunofluorescence (DIF). This study aimed to investigate the fluorescence pattern revealed by DIF in cases of canine localized CCLE and to establish and compare its effectiveness with that obtained from histopathology.Materials, Methods & Results: Eleven dogs suspicious to localized CCLE, i.e., those animals that presented mucocutaneous lesions as erythema, leucoderma, erosive-ulcerative lesions, and loss of nasal planum architecture and its transition to the haired skin underwent medical physical and laboratory examinations (blood count, platelet count, determination of alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, serum albumin, urea, creatinine). Only those animals that proved to be normal across both the physical and laboratorial evaluation were included in Group I. Animals belonging to this group were submitted to general anesthesia to biopsy two samples of lesioned skin from nasal planum to histopathologic examination and DIF test. Five dogs with no skin lesions were included in Group II as negative control to the DIF assay. Two samples of no lesioned skin from nasal planum were biopsied to histopathologic and DIF evaluation. The kappa (k) coefficient was used to determine the degree of agreement and reliability of the results of both tests. A P-value < 5% was considered to be statistically significant. In Group I, all animals were normal across both the physical and laboratorial evaluation. A diagnosis of canine CCLE was established in 81.8% (9/11) of the animals based on histopathology analysis. Two dogs, numbers 10 and 11, respectively, had histopathologic findings suggestive of cutaneous leishmaniasis and compatible with canine demodicosis. The DIF assay confirmed the diagnostic of canine CCLE in 100% (11/11) of the cases, including dogs numbers 10 and 11. Direct immunofluorescence positivity for canine localized CCLE was determined by the presence of homogeneous green fluorescence in the basement membrane zone, with IgM and C3 immunoreagents being found at a significantly higher frequency (P = 0.007) than IgA and IgG (P = 0.017 and P = 0.037, respectively). In Group II, no alterations from histopathologic examination and unspecific fluorescence from DIF reaction were shown in all animals belonging to this group. A substantial and significant degree of agreement or reliability (k = 0.738 and P = 0.002, respectively) was established between the results of both tests.Discussion: In veterinary medicine, there is a lack of studies about DIF around autoimmune dermatoses. This is the first manuscript comparing histopathological and direct immunofluorescence findings in the diagnostic of dogs with localized CCLE. In the present study, the positivity to the DIF assay for canine localized CCLE was established by the presence of green fluorescence of a homogeneous morphologic pattern, especially for IgM and C3, located in the BMZ and cutaneous annexes. Direct immunofluorescence excluded the suspicion of cutaneous leishmaniasis determined by the histopathological findings and confirmed the diagnostic of canine localized CCLE in the dog number 10. Statistically, a substantial degree of agreement and reliability was shown between DIF and histopathology. Therefore, we concluded that the DIF assay is a highly effective and useful complementary examination that improves our ability to diagnose canine CCLE.

Carbon to chlorophyll-a ratio (CCHL) is formulated based on the assumption that adaptive changes in carbon to chlorophyll occur so as to maximize the specific growth rate for ambient conditions, including solar radiation and water temperature. With the dynamic CCHL, an unsteady two-layered, two-dimensional eutrophication numerical model for density stratified coastal waters has been developed. Saturated light intensity (IS) is determined as weighted average of the light intensity for previous three days to incorporate light acclimation by phytoplankton. The bottom water anoxic condition during summer in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong is successfully reproduced by the present method. Otherwise, the simulation with a constant CCHL gave a wrong result.

Experiments have proved that SLS (Signless Laplacian Spectra) is capable of identifying a topology structure and CCEM is capable of distinguishing the differences between corresponding topology SLS eigenvectors. CCEM used in GA is recommended at last since a way of not finding the optimum solution in GA is a good way to reduce computing complexity.

In fact, they argue that CCES is often more rigorous than traditional scholarship. The authors draw from cases of CCES that they conducted to provide evidence and examples. They discuss the importance of relationship building and trust in addressing the tensions that can arise between the demands of knowledge production and action-oriented social change.

In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mutants are viable with large deletions (rho-), or even complete loss of the mitochondrial genome (rho0). One class of rho- mutants, which is called hypersuppressive, is characterised by a high transmission of the mutated mitochondrial genome to the diploid progeny when mated to a wild-type (rho+) haploid. The nuclear gene CCE1 encodes a cruciform cutting endonuclease, which is located in the mitochondrion and is responsible for the highly biased transmission of the hypersuppressive rho- genome. CCE1 is a Holliday junction specific endonuclease that resolves recombination intermediates in mitochondrial DNA. The cleavage activity shows a strong preference for cutting after a 5'-CT dinucleotide. In the absence of the CCE1 gene product, the mitochondrial genomes remain interconnected and have difficulty segregating to the daughter cells. As a consequence, there is an increase in the fraction of daughter cells that are rho0. In this paper we demonstrate the usefulness of lycorine, together with staining by 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), to assay for the mitotic stability of a variety of mitochondrial genomes. We have found that rho+ and rho- strains that contain CT sequences produce a large fraction of rho0 progeny in the absence of CCE1 activity. Only those rho- mitochondrial genomes lacking the CT recognition sequence are unaffected by the cce1 allele.Key words: yeast, mitochondria, hypersuppressive, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, lycorine.

Lignin distribution in the tracheid cell wall of mild compression wood in Pinus radiata D. Don was examined by interference microscopy, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and ultraviolet (UV) microscopy. Two anatomically different samples of mild compression wood were compared with a sample of normal wood using quantitative interference microscopy and microdensitometry combined with confocal fluorescence microscopy to estimate the quantitative or semiquantitative lignin distribution in the S2 and S2L regions of the secondary cell wall and of the cell corner middle lamella (CCML). One of these samples was briefly examined by UV microscopy for comparison. Quantitative interference microscopy provided information on lignin concentration in different regions of the cell wall with values of 26, 46, and 57%, respectively, for the S2, S2L, and CCML regions of sample 1 and 20, 29, and 46%, respectively, for the same regions of sample 2. Microdensitometry of confocal fluorescence images provided semiquantitative information on the relative lignin distribution based on lignin autofluorescence. Comparison between the two compression wood samples using autofluorescence gave results that were in partial agreement with interference microscopy with respect to the relative lignification levels in the S2, S2L, and CCML regions. Some improvement was achieved by using calibration values for hemicellulose rather than holocellulose for interference data in the S2L region. Results for UV microscopy performed on sample 1 indicated that the lignification of the CCML region was comparable with that of the S2L region in this sample but with some variation among cells. All three techniques indicated significant variation in lignification levels of the S2L and CCML regions among adjacent cells and a significant reduction in the lignification of the CCML region compared to normal wood.Key words: lignin distribution, interference microscopy; confocal fluorescence microscopy, UV microscopy, mild compression wood, Pinus radiata D. BackgroundCalcified cerebral emboli (CCEs) are a rare cause of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and are frequently associated with poor outcomes. The presence of dense calcified material enables reliable identification of CCEs using non-contrast CT. However, recanalization rates with the available mechanical thrombectomy (MT) devices remain low.ObjectiveTo recreate a large vessel occlusion involving a CCE using an in vitro silicone model of the intracranial vessels and to demonstrate the feasability of this model to test different endovascular strategies to recanalize an occlusion of the M1 segment of the middle cerebral artery (MCA).MethodsAn in vitro model was developed to evaluate different endovascular treatment approaches using contemporary devices in the M1 segment of the MCA. The in vitro model consisted of a CCE analog placed in a silicone neurovascular model. Development of an appropriate CCE analog was based on characterization of human calcified tissues that represent likely sources of CCEs. Feasibility of the model was demonstrated in a small number of MT devices using four common procedural techniques.ResultsCCE analogs were developed with similar mechanical behavior to that of ex vivo calcified material. The in vitro model was evaluated with various MT techniques and devices to show feasibility of the model. In this limited evaluation, the most successful retrieval approach was performed with a stent retriever combined with local aspiration through a distal access catheter, and importantly, with flow arrest and dual aspiration using a balloon guide catheter.ConclusionCharacterization of calcified tissues, which are likely sources of CCEs, has shown that CCEs are considerably stiffer than thrombus. This highlights the need for a different in vitro AIS model for CCEs than those used for thromboemboli. Consequentially, an in vitro AIS model representative of a CCE occlusion in the M1 segment of the MCA has been developed.

Thermal degradation pro?le and mechanical properties of the samples were evaluated, and crosslink densities of each sample were measured by ?tment of Mooney-Rivlin equation on stress-strain plots. Morphological characteristics (e.g. ?bre structure, ?bre thickness, splitting etc.) of all the specimens were investigated by image analyses of SEM photomicrographs. The highest crosslinking density for BVTL was attributed to its higher ?bre and ?bril thicknesses coupled with rigorous retanning by vegetable tannins and syntans. Embossing at higher temperature and pressure reduced CCPL’s elongation-at-break value and hence stretchiness possibly due to the development of set properties within the CCPL matrix. SBL was noted to contain huge void spaces that increased its stretchiness, and melamine formaldehyde syntans showed pronounced in?uence in increasing the thermal resistance of both CCPL and CDDDML.Bangladesh J.
