Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation examines one century of Palestinian nationalism in Latin America (1920-2010) by following the path of Palestinian collectivities in three countries (Chile, Honduras and Brazil). Our research identifies three main variables which explain different phases for this “long-distance nationalism”: Latin-American immigration policies and attitudes towards ethnic diversity and their impact on the expressions of Palestinian identity by immigrants and their descendants according to their social status; the evolution of the Palestinian national movement and its conceptualization of “Palestinians abroad”; and finally, the structures of communal organizations – their leaders, their resources and their internal dynamics. Our approach therefore combines political sociology of ethnicity, nationalism studies, and social movement theory. We demonstrate that long-distance nationalism does not spontaneously derive from immigrant “nostalgia”. Even as immigrant groups come to constitute a diaspora, with communal organizations in charge of promoting the culture of origin and developing ethnic networks, nationalist mobilization is not automatic

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe thesis is based on fieldwork conducted with the Palestinian diaspora in France and on the analysis of the “Minorities at Risk Organizational Behavior” (MAROB) database compiled at the University of Maryland. We focus on the plurality of Palestinians’ commitments towards their home country. Their absolute duty to keep their identity is overseen by their constant concern not to betray the Palestinian cause. Our results indicate that both the commitment of the Palestinians living in France and their identity more broadly, do not solely originate in a direct socialization process or in historical and cultural belonging. Their commitment from afar is also shaped by the normative representations and expectations deriving from the host society. Furthermore, commitment from afar often emancipates itself from institutional boundaries and materializes at a more individualistic level. A diverse spectrum of engagement with the Palestinian cause shows that diaspora members find ways of expression and action allowing them to combine their commitments with the pursuit of their personal aspirations. That diversity, far from leading to conflict, gives way to peaceful plurality

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleEN: The academic literature has extensively examined the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in its various facets, including its internationalisation. However, there is still too little research on the unofficial relations that have been established internationally between non-governmental movements around this issue. This gap prevents us from understanding the path and motivations of the activists who, during the Second Intifada, called in Belgium for solidarity with the Palestinians to be placed in the line of the great mobilisations against the Vietnam War, Franco's Spain, the Greece of the Colonels, Pinochet's Chile or South African apartheid. The present study traces the genealogy and development of Belgian solidarity movements with the Palestinian cause. The central argument is that this cause has been one of the emblematic struggles supported by and inspiring several Western activists, from the communist left to the New Left. At the same time, the complexity of the Palestinian question has also generated much dissension among so-called progressive circles. In order to investigate the properties of the case in question, the present research is based mainly on newly accessible archives of activist networks and asks in essence: for these networks, what was "Palestine" another name for? The period studied begins with the birth of the state of Israel in 1948 - and the subsequent 'catastrophe' or 'Nakba' for the Palestinians. This choice is intended to articulate the transition made by a certain progressive solidarity from a pro-Israel sentiment to a commitment to Palestinian demands after June 1967. The invasion of Lebanon by the Israeli army in 1982 marks the terminus ad quem of the period studied, as this event symbolically corresponds to the moment when the Palestinian cause became hegemonic in the agenda of the main Belgian movements dedicated to international solidarity. This research was supported by the Fonds pour la Recherche en Sciences Humaines (FRESH, associated fund of the F.R.S.-FNRS.) from 2016 to 2019.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis research aims to contribute to the sociology of public policies and social movements. It questions the conditions of emergence of a “cause” at the very beginning of the 1960’s and its successive transformations. Claiming for Palestinian interests has raised the affirmation of a political identity. The edification of this “cause” during the political context of the 1960’s points out that this issue has been referred to the Algerian national liberation movement. It’s a “Third-World” problem. But at the end of the 1970’s, this cause has been framed by the International Law and Humanitarian Topics. New actors reconfigured the problem: Associations of Jurists claimed assistance for the civil populations. Advocacy networks promoted Human rights and conducted an international moral protest. NGO’s and local civil authorities supported the development of Palestinian Territories by providing humanitarian aid. This cooperation belongs to a new Repertory of collective actions: Transnational-Solidarity. We have investigated the local level of a cooperation conducted by a French municipality with a Palestinian city in the West Bank (a refugee camp). Our enquiry points out how the actors provide support for empowerment of Female inhabitants. Humanitarian Aid for civil population is a way to legitimate political engagements

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of this thesis is to address the issue of difficulties that Palestinian students encounter in learning French as a Foreign Language at An-Najah University in Nablus. Our research focuses primarily on the articulation of educational culture, representations of foreign languages, context of learning, and role of others in relation to students’ learning practices. Mainly based on a corpus of interviews and questionnaires submitted to investigated students, questionnaires to teachers of French at An-Najah University and a French public counterpart, the study shows that students of the study adopt learning practices issued from a traditional educational culture, inadequate with the objectives of the French program, which promote innovative teaching approaches. Crossing students’ test findings with teachers’ confirms that both traditional school learning practices and institutional context affect significantly the course of learning. The outcome of the French public survey reveals that the specificity of learning practices of the investigated students inheres in the way they use them, which is determined by the culture and the individual varieties of the learner, rather than in the practice itself. Moreover, findings of the interviews (conducted according to the reflexive approach), show that students categorize themselves according to beliefs influenced by others and to negative emotions interfering during learning, which greatly affect their cognition, relationship with others as well as behavior. A discourse analysis emphasizes that, in case of communication difficulties, students tend to activate cognitive and interactive skills, which definitely conform to their learning attitudes observed in the outcome of the study. The central issue of the thesis is to highlight the question of difficulties in learning a foreign language by showing that it is not confined only to language proficiency, but is a complex process, which involves considering the multi-dimensionality of the learner (cognition, emotions, behaviors and relationships). The specificity of this study, the first conducted among Palestinian students within this training program, lies in its dual socio-cultural and psycho-pedagogical approach that focuses on the learner and places him within his environment
