Folate requirement among women who plan to become pregnant should be raised to 600 μg/day during the periconceptional period. To meet this need, several countries began to promote the use of folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy. Here, we investigated prevalence and determinants of dietary folate intake and folic acid supplement use among 397 pregnant women (aged 15–50 years old, median = 37 years old). We also investigated their effects on neonatal outcomes in a subgroup of women who completed pregnancy. For doing that, we used data from the “Mamma & Bambino” project, an ongoing mother-child cohort settled in Catania (Italy). Inadequate folate intake was evaluated using a Food Frequency Questionnaire and defined as an intake < 600 μg/day. Women were also classified as non-users (i.e., women who did not use folic acid supplements), insufficient users (i.e., women who did not take folic acid supplements as recommended), and recommended users of folic acid supplements. Neonatal outcomes of interest were preterm birth (PTB) and small for gestational age (SGA). Nearly 65% of women (n = 257) reported inadequate folate intake, while 74.8% and 22.4% were respectively classified as insufficient or recommended users of supplements. We demonstrated higher odds of inadequate folate intake among smoking women (OR = 1.457; 95%CI = 1.046–2.030; p = 0.026), those who followed dietary restrictions (OR = 2.180; 95%CI = 1.085–4.378; p = 0.029), and those with low adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (OR = 3.194; 95%CI = 1.958–5.210; p < 0.001). In a subsample of 282 women who completed pregnancy, we also noted a higher percentage of SGA among those with inadequate folate intake (p < 0.001). Among 257 women with inadequate folate intake, those with low educational level were more likely to not take folic acid supplements than their more educated counterpart (OR = 5.574; 95%CI = 1.487–21.435; p = 0.012). In a subsample of 184 women with inadequate folate intake and complete pregnancy, we observed a higher proportion of SGA newborns among women who did not take supplement before pregnancy and those who did not take at all (p = 0.009). We also noted that the proportion of PTB was higher among non-users and insufficient users of folic acid supplements, but difference was not statistically significant. Our study underlined the need for improving the adherence of pregnant women with recommendations for dietary folate intake and supplement use. Although we proposed a protective effect of folic acid supplement use on risk of SGA, further research is encouraged to corroborate our findings and to investigate other factors involved.

Paleosols record paleoclimatic processes in the Earth's Critical Zone and are archives of ancient landscapes associated with archeological sites. Detailed field, micromorphologic, and bulk geochemical analysis of paleosols were conducted near four sites at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania within the same stratigraphic horizon as theZinjanthropus(Paranthropus)boiseiarcheological site. Paleosols are thin (< 35 cm), smectitic, and exhibit Vertisol shrink–swell features. Traced across the paleolandscape over 1 km and just beneath Tuff IC (1.845 Ma), the paleosols record apaleocatenain which soil moisture at the four sites was supplemented by seepage additions from adjacent springs, and soil development was enhanced by this additional moisture. Field evidence revealed an abrupt lateral transition in paleosol composition at the PTK site (< 1.5 m apart) in which paleosol B, formed nearest the spring system, is highly siliceous, vs. paleosol A, formed in smectitic clay. Thin-section investigations combined with mass-balance geochemistry, using Chapati Tuff as parent material and assuming immobile Ti, show moderately intense weathering. Pedotransfer functions indicate a fertile soil system, but sodicity may have limited some plant growth. Paleosol bulk geochemical proxies used to estimate paleoprecipitation (733–944 mm/yr), are higher than published estimates of 250–700 mm/yr using δD values of lipid biomarkers.

Ternary events originating from the 197 Au + 197 Au reaction at 15 MeV/nucleon, studied by using the multidetector array CHIMERA at LNS Catania, have been collected in almost complete 2π range of the forward hemisphere of CHIMERA thus extending the angular range of our previously reported preliminary data. Energy- and time calibrations for heavy fragments at large angles were supplemented with an analysis of coincidence events of binary strongly damped reactions. Contrary to the previous preliminary results, the new complete data clearly show presence of sequential fission processes in which one of Au -like nuclei undergoes fission after re-separation of the primary binary system. Mechanism of these two types of reactions observed in our data, sequential fission reactions and prompt ternary processes, are presently studied using comparisons with predictions of the stochastic BNV model of Baran, Colonna and Di Toro and the QMD model of Łukasik.

The approaches to the use of catena method of studying the diversity of soil animal communities’ arena landscape of the Dnieper River Valley (within the natural reserve “Dnieper-Orelsky” using phytoindication estimation have been developed in the present article. Soil animals ecomorphes have been verified on the basis of main trends variability of environmental conditions which evaluated by means of phytoindication approaches. Monitoring polygon situated in the north-eastern part of the natural reserve "Dnieper-Orelsky". The width of the polygon is 3260 m, height – 2850 m, its total area is 930 hectares. Inside the polygon we selected some five plots: on the slope of the sand dunes at the border the sandy steppe and Acer tataricum shrub; on the slope of the Northern exposure of the Orlova valley in Acer tataricum oak forest with Dáctylis glomeráta; in terrace near the flood plain on the border with the lower part of the slope, in elm-black poplar forest with Glechóma hederácea; in the waterlogged tributary of river Protoch on the border of the marsh and forest ecosystems; in river Protoch in grass community, in a gradient from the marsh community to steppe meadows. Each plot was represented by 105 squares of size 3×3 m. Squares arranged in 7 contiguous rows of 15 squares in each. Plot size was 21×45 m. Big side plot was located along the visually discernible gradient terrain topography and vegetation cover. In each square we made a description of the vegetation with the assessment of the projective cover with a lag of 10%. In the center of each square we sampled soil of 0.25×0.25 m from which the soil macroinvertebrates have been extracted by hand sorting. The ordination of mesopedobionts communities has been applied to multidimensional scaling procedure based on metrics of Bray-Curtis with provisional data on transformation according to Hellinger. The phytoindication estimation of the environmental regimes have been found to be statistically significant predictors of multidimensional scales that obtained after ordination of mesopedobionts communities. Dimension 1 can be explained by edaphotop nutrient status, dimension 2 can be explained by edaphotop humidity, dimension 3 may be explained by soil aeration, dimension 4 may be explained by quantity of carbonates in soil. Dimensions 5 and 6 have a complex factor nature which is difficult to interpret meaningfully. Environmental assessment regimes using phyto-indicative scales enabled set the value of soil carbonate content and aeration in structuring of soil animals communities. The obtained result makes reasonable provision of new ecomorphes of soil animals such as aèromorph and carbonatomorph. Aèromorphes are ecological group that combines soil animals, preferring similar condition of soil aeration, among which are highlighted in aerophyles, sub-aerophyles, hemiaerofobes and subaerofobes. Carbonatomorphes are ecological group that combines soil animals, preferring similar condition of carbonates content in soil, among which are highlighted in carbonatofobes, akarbonatophyles, hemicarbonatophyles, carbonatophyles and hyper-carbonatophyles. Classic catena approach for biogeocenotic and landscape diversity investigation have been supplemented by the assessment of the ecological regimes through phytoindication and ecomorphic analysis of vegetation. Ordinates of ecological regimes are the gradients of variation of soil animal communities. Information and valuable markers of vegetation (phytoindication scale and ecomorphes) can be used as training variables to assess the indicator properties of soil animal communities. Ecomorphes of soil animals reflect the main aspects of the structural organization of their communities and may serve as valuable indicators of the properties and behaviors of soil as environment of living organisms.

Background: Current availability of several biologic treatments for severe asthma makes it possible to choose the most appropriate for each patient. Sometimes a good percentage of patients with severe asthma may be eligible for biologics that target either the allergic phenotype or the eosinophilic one, but not all respond to that selected as first choice. The aim of our real-life study was to assess whether, for patients with severe eosinophilic allergic asthma, not previously controlled by the anti-IgE omalizumab, the shift to another biologic targeting interleukin-5, such as mepolizumab, may represent a good therapeutic choice. Methods: A total of 41 consecutive patients with severe, persistent allergic, eosinophilic asthma, uncontrolled despite treatment with omalizumab, were enrolled in seven certified Clinical Respiratory Units of Southern Italy (Catania, Catanzaro, Foggia, Bari, Palermo, and two University Respiratory Units of Naples) and shifted to mepolizumab without a wash-out period. Data at baseline, after at least 12 months of therapy with omalizumab, and after at least 12 months of treatment with mepolizumab were collected. Results: After at least 12 months of therapy with mepolizumab, patients experienced a significant decrease in the number of exacerbations/year (5.8 ± 1.8 versus 0.7 ± 0.9, p < 0.0001), an increment of asthma control test score (12 ± 2.7 versus 21.9 ± 2.7, p < 0.0001), an increase in pre-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s (1.56 ± 0.45 l versus 1.86 ± 0.52 l, p < 0.0001), and a reduction of blood eosinophils (584 ± 196 cells/µl versus 82 ± 56 cells/µl, p < 0.0001). The percentage of patients who were dependent on corticosteroids significantly decreased from 46% at baseline to 5% during treatment with mepolizumab. Conclusion: Results of our real-life multicentric experience confirms that the shift to mepolizumab could be a good therapeutic strategy in severe eosinophilic allergic asthma not previously controlled by omalizumab. During the summer of 2005, a new disease of bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae Aiton) was observed on young seedlings (2 to 3 months old) in a nursery located in Giarre (Catania) in eastern Sicily. Symptoms included brown, water-soaked leaf spots that first appeared after seedling emergence and then gradually enlarged and became necrotic. Occasionally, during wet conditions, seedlings were completely blighted, resulting in total loss. The disease was observed on 10% of the 3,000 plants present in one nursery. A single bacterial colony was consistently isolated on King's medium B (KB) supplemented with 0.01% cycloeximide from surface-sterilized, brownish lesions and water-soaked leaf tissues. The isolates were purified on nutrient agar (NA). Three bacterial strains isolated from three different symptomatic plants were used for pathogenicity and identification tests on S. reginae plants. Five plants were inoculated per bacterial strain by spraying the leaves with a buffer phosphate suspension (0.1 M) at 106 CFU/ml prepared from KB plates incubated for 24 h at 28°C and wounding the leaves (four wounds per leaf) with a sterile needle. The same number of noninoculated plants was used as control. All plants were covered with plastic bags and maintained in a greenhouse at 25 ± 1°C with 95 to 100% relative humidity until symptoms occurred 3 to 4 days later. All three bacterial strains tested were virulent and caused symptoms identical to those observed in the nursery. No symptoms were observed in control plants. Koch's postulates were fulfilled by the reisolation of the three strains from inoculated plants. The strains were gram-negative, aerobic rods, grew aerobically, were white and nonmucoid on yeast dextrose calcium carbonate agar, nonfluorescent on KB, produced diffusible nonfluorescent pigment on KB, and were oxidase and urease negative. All strains utilized glucose, arabinose, mannose, mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, gluconate, caprate, malate, citrate, and phenyl acetate and none of the strains produced indole or acidified glucose. Using the API 20NE test strips (bioMérieux, Marcy l'Etoile, France) incubated at 28°C for 24 to 48 h, all strains were initially identified as Burkholderia cepacia. On the basis of the nutrient profiles revealed by the BIOLOG system (Microlog System Release 4.2, Hayward, CA), the strains were identified as B. gladioli (Severini 1913) Yabuuchi et al. 1993. The index of probability was 100% and the index of similarity was 0.75%. For molecular identification of strains, 16S rDNA was amplified by using species-specific primers Eub-16-1 and Gl-16-2457, obtaining a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product of 463 bp (1). PCR analysis indicated that the strains belong to B. gladioli. Other bacteria have been previously reported in Italy as pathogens of Strelitzia spp. (2,3). To our knowledge, this is the first outbreak of leaf spot and blight caused by B. gladioli on S. reginae. References: (1) A. Bauernfeind et al. J. Clin. Microbiol. 37:1335, 1999. (2) P. Bella et al. AbstractThe following contribution explains how a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) can technologically supplement the governance process in complex environments, in this case urban environments where Fab City is active. DAOs are implementations of the blockchain technology which can be considered as coordination tools and de facto “decentralized ERP* (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems on the internet”. They can enable organizations and communities to address challenges that are otherwise too complex in a tangible, dynamic and sustainable manner which caters to the general need for transition governance. To facilitate collaboration and coordination, the idea of a DAO is to effectively capture the various rule sets, actor constellations and general conditions to address the four universal problems in organizing-task division, task allocation, reward distribution, and information flows. The following conceptualization aims to provide a practical solution alternative to supplement cooperation and coordination between various actors within the wider ecosystem using a DAO. The current state of blockchain and DAO research serves as a rich backdrop when exploring the given opportunity and shedding light on the most important requirements, risks, and success factors. Despite remaining challenges in particular the legal domain, the focus of this article is to showcase how a progressive path forward can lead to a setting in which DAOs can be successfully integrated and become an operational part of an urban environment.

Abstract Bibliographical Note.-The abundant literature of the drama is more satisfactorily treated in the appendices to F. E. Schelling, Elizabethan Drama (1908), and vols. v and vi (1910) of the Cambridge History of English Literature, than in R. W.Lowe, Bibliographical Account of English Theatrical Literature (1888), K. L. Bates and L. B. Godfrey, English Drama: a Working Basis (1896), or W. D. Adams, Dictionary of the Drama (1904). There is an American pamphlet on Materials for the Study of the English Drama, excluding Shakespeare (1912, Newbery Library, Chicago), which I have not seen. Periodical lists of new books are published in the Modern Language Review, the Beiblatt to Anglia, and the Bulletin of the English Association, and annual bibliographies by the Modern Humanities Research Association (from 1921) and in the Shakespeare Jahrbuch. The bibliography by H. R. Tedder in the Encyclopaedia Britannica (11th ed.) s.v. Shakespeare, A. C. Shaw, Index to the Shakespeare Memorial Library (1900-3), and W. Jaggard, Shaluspeare Bibliography (19u), on which, however, cf. C. S. Northup in J. G. P. xi. 218, are also useful. W. W. Greg, Notes on Dramatic Bibliographers (1911, M. S. C. i. 324), traces from the publishers’ advertisements of the Restoration a catena of play-lists in E. Phillips, Theatrum Poetarum (1675), W. Winstanley, Lives of the Most Famous English Poets (1687), G. Langbaine, Momus Triumphans (1688) and Account of the English Dramatick Poets (1691), C. Gildon, Lives and Characters of the English Drainatick Poets (1698), W. R. Chetwood, The British Theatre (1750), E. Capell, Notitia Dramatica (1783), and the various editions of the Biographica Dramatica from 1764 to 1812. More recent are J. 0. Halliwell-Phillipps, Dictionary of Old English Plays (1860), and W. C. Hazlitt, Manual of Old English Plays (1892); but all are largely superseded by W. W. Greg, A List of English Plays (1900) and A List of Masques, Pageants, &-c. (1902). His account of Warburton’s collection in The Bakings of Betsy (Library, 1911)serves as a supplement. A few plays discovered later than 1900 appeared in an Irish sale of 1906 (cf. JahYbuch, xliii. 310) and in the Mostyn sale of 1919 (cf. t.p. facsimiles in Sotheby’s sale-catalogue). For the problems of the early prints, the Bibliographical Note to ch. xxii should be consulted.

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive, irreversible disease that is only slowed down with the use of medications and therapy. These are the only way to slow down the progression of the disease to more severe situation. Currently, virtual reality is being use on games and entertainment. Some doctors prefer the use of virtual reality like Wii to help supplement the therapy done on rehabilitation. However, devices to cater virtual reality for mid-class to lower-class patients cannot afford such devices. An alternative device, usually accessible to everyone is proposed to cater these virtual reality applications that can help in therapy of Parkinson’s patients. With that, the capabilities of VR can be accessible to more patients who cannot avail expense medication and devices for virtual reality.

Abstract Fraud is not a new phenomenon. It has always been part of society. Even in Roman times, the basic provisions of law had to be supplemented and amended to cater for problems posed by dishonest activities, such as where a deceitful statement has induced an innocent party to enter into a disadvantageous contract. As society has evolved, fraudulent activity has taken new forms. In 1720, for example, false statements made to inflate the price of company shares (share ramping) presented acute problems and led to the collapse of the South Sea Company ( ‘the South Sea Bubble ‘) in the wake of a history of bribery and corruption. But, in the last 50 years, fraud has become more complex, more international in character, and more ambitious in monetary terms.

Today, in a globalised, digital world, leadership challenges in the adoption and integration of emerging social software tools to supports for learning abound. Today’s students who have grown up in technology saturated environments have never known a world without the Internet, mobile phones, video on demand, and personal computers. Leaders and educators must therefore know their students, and cater for their diverse needs. Educational institutions in the 21st century must learn how to adopt social software tools and apply sound pedagogical strategies in order to add value to existing practices and to enhance the learning process. ICT supplements and enhances learning and student engagement through access to global learning communities and rich resources, and this requires educators to be conversant with the technology, able to lead by example and capable of creating authentic contexts and environments for learning. Educators in today’s media rich society must be ready to grapple with the significant pedagogic, cultural, and social changes associated with technological innovation.

<em>Abstract.—</em>As the United States has become increasingly urbanized, angling participation has declined. Urban fishing programs provide an opportunity to reverse this trend by effectively targeting new anglers while increasing fishing opportunities for current or recently lapsed urban anglers. There are three essential components in a successful urban fishing program: a resource with clean water and a quality fishery close to current or potential anglers, facilities to accommodate anglers, and advertisement of the fishery to inform and recruit anglers. Early in the development of an urban fishing program, urban anglers’ interests should be assessed and the program should be developed to meet these interests. Next, access to a quality fishery must be developed—either by creating new bodies of water or enhancing existing ones. Depending upon the level of fishing pressure and the species of interest to anglers, supplemental stocking and intensive management may be needed to maintain the fishery. Amenities such as restrooms, picnic areas, docks, and waste receptacles may also be important. Different angling groups may desire different amenities, so providing different sites to cater to these different groups is advisable. Once the facilities and amenities are in place, the resource must be marketed to targeted potential anglers. The marketing strategy should be tailored to each market segment being targeted. Lapsed anglers are the most easily recruited segment and should be a top priority for advertising. Minorities and children are also commonly targeted. As the U.S. population becomes more urbanized, urban fishing opportunities will continue to grow in importance. Without these opportunities, urbanites will likely be drawn toward the numerous other recreational activities that are conveniently available in urban centers, leading to further declines in angling involvement and concern for natural resource conservation and the environment.

The story the official statistics tell about production in the household sector is remarkable for a country as urbanized and industrialized as the Russian Federation. As Table 2.1 shows, this former industrial giant and major oil producer derives 51 per cent of the value of its agricultural produce from farms that, on average, are under one hectare in size and, according to official land use statistics, occupy just 6.6 per cent of the country’s agricultural land (Sel' skoe khozyaistvo, okhota i lesovodstvo, 2004: 56). At the end of the Soviet period personal subsidiary farming was responsible for 26 per cent of the USSR’s agricultural output, a smaller share than now but still significant for what was at that time the world’s second largest industrial economy (Agrarnaya reforma v Rossii, 2000: 204). The post-Soviet expansion in the sector’s relative contribution mainly took place in the early 1990s after which it maintained a steady but more modest increase from the second half of the 1990s to 2002. It fell back in subsequent years but in 2004 was still contributing twice as much as before the USSR’s collapse. In West European countries such small-scale agricultural activity supplements production on large farms or it caters to niche markets. In Russia, the pattern is different and small farms are the principal producers of certain staple foodstuffs such as potatoes and vegetables and equal partners in the production of meat and dairy products. This is shown in Table 2.2. In 1990, before the collapse of communism, personal subsidiary farms accounted for 30 per cent of the country’s vegetables and fruit and between 13 and 42 per cent of the beef, pork, and mutton; collective and state farms were also major producers of these products (ibid. 205). The complementarity between large and small farming was thus a feature of the Soviet period, but it has been brought into sharper relief in the post-communist period. As a result, the importance of people’s farms in the agri-food system in the Russian Federation today can be properly understood only within the context of changes in large farming.

Abstract Decoding Business Dynamics: A Comparative Analysisand Theoretical Implications details a comparative analysis and decodes business dynamics of all the organizations under study, from various perspectives that serve the concerns of the book’s thematic approach. The print giants have been lined up sequentially, to be compared and contrasted upon essential parameters that seek to holistically recap the major aspects covered by the author. The bases for comparison range from the incipient genesis of these organizations to the current business models of growth followed by them. The author first begins by discussing the story behind how each newspaper was conceived. While those like Hindustan Times, The Hindu, The Indian Express, and Dainik Jagran were born out of efforts steeped in the national freedom struggle, The Times of India originated to cater especially to the British business class. Further still, Dainik Bhaskar was an entity that only emerged after India won independence. Closely associated with each organization’s origin story is the strategic intent behind launching them, which is what the author compares next. Chronologically tracing the values upon which the foundation of each newspaper is built sheds light on the changing visions of the companies with time and market environments. In the same breath, the visionary leadership and changing ownership patterns of the mentioned organizations are elaborated upon, thereby crediting the developments in each paper’s lifeline to the astute personalities responsible for them. The manner in which the ownership history of any company affects its functions will be simultaneously examined. Since the strength of any newspaper is shaped by its editorial clout, the author enlists the legendary editors that brick-by-brick etched out an identity for each paper, and how their editorial policies weighed the respective organizations’ popularity among Indian audiences. Product development and diversification is essential to any product’s shelf life. This basis of comparison observes how each product, in this case, each particular newspaper, has committed itself to constant growth, by branching out into multiple editions and supplements across genres. Credit has also been given to the newspapers for the development of product layout, design, and consumer-centrism in their pages. Following the various product trajectories, the author continues on to discuss the broader aspect of the companies’ business development and diversification from print into multiple verticals like radio, television, digital, and marketing solutions. Enunciating this angle is key to realizing the gigantic status of these organizations, as emphasized in the title of the book. Under the umbrella of business strategy, the companies’ development pertaining to their various mergers, acquisitions, takeovers, and strategic alliances is looked into, giving an insight into the necessity of collaborative relationships in the industry for survival. By then mapping the market expansion, geographical spread, regional penetration, and international footprints of each company, the author brings the reader back to on-the-ground realities pertaining to the Indian demographic, its acceptance of the products these organizations have given it, and the organizations’ mutual readiness to aggregate their own popularity by navigating these trends. The financial analysis of every organization is meant to reflect the consolidated sum of the success they have achieved, connoting the same through hard numbers for a clearer understanding. A review of the companies’ finances will also highlight the growing movement of mass media into commerciality, preparing the stage for the next point under question. An analysis of the business dynamics of growth strategies followed by each of these giants will proffer the reader a holistic understanding of the bedrock upon which the companies’ core policies lie. This will additionally reveal the companies’ management approach and simultaneously hint at the evolution of their strategic intents. Conclusively, the chapter also tracks the timeline of technological advancements in these organizations, giving weight to the procurement of print machinery and the potential the future holds in the wake of the technological revolution.

Abstract Many offshore floating production systems including their risers are approaching the end of their original Design Life. Operators are faced with the choice of either decommissioning or demonstrating that the original Design Life can be extended (Life Extension). Life extension requires the Operator to perform detailed engineering analyses to verify that the system can be operated safely over the period of Life Extension. This generally requires detailed fatigue analysis of actual fabrication data to demonstrate that the fatigue damage still within the required design life and the original fabrication flaws or fatigue cracks that may have initiated over the original Design Life will not grow to a critical size resulting in failure. In some cases, the detailed engineering analysis is supplemented by an in-line inspection program. The critical challenge that many operators face nowadays is finding the original design, fabrication and inspection records since they may be more than 20 years old. The use of actual procurement and fabrication data provides more credibility to the life extension engineering. Furthermore, the actual data could support the removal of at least some of the conservatism associated with the design of new risers. This paper will review and discuss specific issues associated with the availability of procurement and fabrication data and how to optimize and use the available knowledge and information in cases where data is not available. Some focus will be placed on the fracture mechanics aspect of the fatigue and the Engineering Criticality Assessment (ECA) approach to determine the riser life extension based on the weld original flaws. Finally, the paper will provide guidance and examples of how to take advantage of in-line inspection to supplement the life extension analysis and provide increased confidence on the predicted life extension.

Engineering Criticality Assessment (ECA) is a procedure based on fracture mechanics that may be used to supplement the traditional S-N approach and determine the flaw acceptance and inspection criteria in fatigue and fracture design of risers and flowlines. A number of design codes provide guidance for this procedure, e.g. BS-7910:2005 [1]. However, more investigations and example studies are still needed to address the design implications for riser and flowline applications. This paper provides a review of the existing ECA methodology, presents a fracture mechanics design method for a wide range of riser and flowline fatigue problems, and shows flaw size results from steel catenary riser (SCR) and flowline (FL) examples. The first example is a deepwater SCR subjected to fatigue loads due to vessel motion and riser VIV. The second example is a subsea flowline subjected to thermal fatigue loads. The effects of crack re-characterization and material plasticity on the Level-2 and Level-3 ECA results of the SCR and flowline examples are illustrated.

Abstract An alternative methodology using new preventative technology to manage cybersecurity exposure on deepwater drilling rig assets is presented. For the past two years Shell's Deepwater Wells business has been evaluating typical cyber defence approaches and undertaken cybersecurity risk assessments and penetration tests. These activities have demonstrated the challenges attaining cybersecure drilling rig environments. Whilst cyberattacks increase in frequency, adaptability, and become cheaper to launch, regulatory and liability insurance requirements are also evolving. To achieve the goal of cyber-resilience, a major Operator has collaborated with a cybersecurity firm to trial technology for rapidly and reliably protecting deepwater rigs. The paper presents aspects of the numerous challenges faced and offers a different approach using new technology applied to both supplement and accelerate the attainment of a cyber-resilient environment onboard deepwater drilling rigs. It shares the deep dive lessons learnt leading to a more comprehensive understanding of how to protect drilling rigs and their safety critical control systems. Aside from addressing technical attributes using risk vs. maturity based methods, the approach also caters to business demands of short term rig contracts, managing multi-vendor legacy systems and satisfying increasing digitalisation/remote access needs with associated reductions in overall cybersecurity CAPEX spend.
