Moukaddem-Ender, Abir. „Evolution des carrières des femmes universitaires au Liban : une approche interactionniste“. Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris, HESAM, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023HESAC050.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis aims to study the career achievements of Lebanese female academics from both an objective and subjective perspective, examining the career perceptions and achievements of women in private and public universities, across different generations, and within various disciplines. Drawing on an interactionist framework that combines Giddens' social structuration theory (1984) and Fagenson's GOS model (Gender-Organization-System) (1990), 35 semi-structured interviews were conducted with female faculty members from different private and public universities in Lebanon. These interviews allowed us to identify several variables influencing women's careers and formulate hypotheses regarding the effects of work environments (disciplines, university types), which were translated into questionnaire. Our research provides insights into the specific challenges faced by women in this region and suggests measures that can be taken to promote gender equality. We also emphasize the importance and effectiveness of management practices in supporting the careers of female academics

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis, based on fieldwork on sex trafficking conducted in Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore, formulates an economic anthropology of intimate relations that conceptualises Vietnamese sex workers as embedded in relations with informal creditors, sex migration brokers, employers in the sex industry, their families and their clients. While the market economy embraced by Vietnam since the launch of the Đổimới reforms in 1986 encourages women to invest, become indebted, consume and migrate, several obstacles stand in their way: exclusion from formal credit markets, high cost of regulated labor migration, familial obligations, gender inequalities and the risk of stigmatisation. To make their way in this world of opportunities and constraints, they use intimacy as a multipurpose and strategic resource to strengthen their leverage in dealing with these constraints. The framework I propose is based on a concept, careers of intimacy, that takes into account the fluidity of their trajectories and the articulation between economy and intimacy. This perspective examines the trajectories of debt in light of the recent evolution of financial markets and transnational migration for sex work; the trajectories of care with regard to the familialist welfare regime promoted by the state; sexual careers through the prism of gender inequalities, and notably the sexual division of labour; and moral careers with reference to state-initiated campaigns against «social evils». Based on solid ethnographic work that focused on the economic ethnography of intimacy, a longitudinal approach and my considerable experience with NGOs working on anti-trafficking in Southeast Asia, this research quickly went beyond its initial objective–human trafficking–to unveil the private lives of Vietnamese women which were inextricably tied to the market economy. Thus, the research became an investigation of the place of intimacy in the market economy. The theoretical moorings of this research are the anthropology of slavery, the «deconstructivist» approach towards trafficking discourses and practices, the economic sociology of intimacy and the sociology of careers

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis research concerns the advancement of gender roles and relationships during politician career. We analyze female and male politician socialization in three parts. First, election campaigns introduce to female or male role. They turn women to outsiders whereas men embody experienced politician. Then, selection leads women to lowly work. Finally, they try to highlight their position by claiming a female ethical code. However, to stay or improve their status, they must learn male behaviors too. Nevertheless, they do not wholly forgive female politician ethical code

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe aim of this thesis is to understand and explain factors and mechanisms at the origin of the glass ceiling that impedes upward mobility of women in the career hierarchy in organizations in Morocco. To investigate this matter, we used the holist GOS (Gender-Organization-System) approach. We adopted a quantitative method based on a survey in the retail sector. Before that, we conducted an exploratory qualitative survey. Our results show that even if women executives are as ambitious as their male counterparts, they tend to temper their ambitions in favor of their work-life balance. This is even more ambivalent in the presence of young children. Moreover, gender stereotypes such as « think manager, think male » don’t seem to be influenced by the hierarchical progress of women, since firms tend to value their skills competences and their leadership

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis develops a sociological approach of sports journalism in the Swiss-French daily press. The production of news is analyzed, and its effect on the content of the news is examined through interviews, ethnographic observations and an analysis of a corpus of sports articles. It reveals that the professional styles of sports journalists depend on several mechanisms imbricated at a structural level (ways of recruitment of journalists, division of labour, organizational constraints in the newsrooms, etc. ), and an interactional level (in the newsroom and in the field) at which the journalists tastes and biographical experiences also interfere. Nevertheless, sports sections are gendered organisations, not only leading most male and female journalists to have different careers, but also to the production of different texts and follow different journalistic practices. This explains why the recent feminization of sports journalism in Swiss-French daily press, a male dominated domain, seems to have encouraged the development of a new journalistic style

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleSince the end of the Bosnian war (1992-95), many women organizations have been created in Bosnia in order to handle many post-conflict issues. At the same time, in the international arena, new norms have highlighted the specific needs of women and girls in the aftermath of conflict in regard to their specific victimization during armed conflict. The resolution 1325 adopted by the Security Council in 2000, calls the States to take into account these specific needs and to integrate women in peacebuilding decision's processes. This research aims at examining and analyzing the capabilities of women organizations in participating in peacebuilding process in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim of the research is to bring out the factors of their mobilizations and the evolution of their agenda of action with a specific attention to the international norms circulation. Two main categories of organizations have been defined during the research in order to highlight different agencies and roles in the peacebuilding process, as well as the relationship between the two different categories of organizations

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleRather than reducing gender inequality with a problem of choice of incentives or pure discrimination, we propose to examine this phenomenon through the issue of labour quality. The assessment of labour quality is not just a simple coordination of actors around a selection criterion; it mobilizes a collective and consensual representation of “skilled” labourer, i.e. a quality convention. A firm is crossed by a plurality of quality conventions. We hypothesize that mobilization of some of them explains horizontal and vertical segregation (glass ceiling) by gender within organisation. An econometric study of the progression of managers and employees in a car manufacturer is proposed. This study helps us to isolate the determinants of career and assess their impact on the career paths of men and women. A qualitative interview study refines our exploration of evaluation methods and helps us to understand how business processes, apparently neutral, proved ultimately detrimental to women. These findings argue for a more practical purpose of evaluation in the diagnosis of occupational inequality. They also support the strategy of mainstreaming advocated recently by the EU and French government: to improve their efficiency, gender politics should promote forms of regulation closer to business reality
Akpinar-Sposito, Cansu. „Career opportunities of executive women in the French and Turkish subsidiaries of a multinational corporation“. Thesis, Lyon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LYSE3061.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleFor the purposes of the comparative study, we will address in turn France and Turkey, issues of equality women/men in workforce, policies shelved by the government and companies and the paradigm shift that is taking place and that tries to control retention of women workers. Then we devote a large part in this chapter to explaining our research problem. After clarification of the various issues involved, we will unveil our research question and the specific issues that we intend to develop. We proceed by following a review of the literature on the research that exists on the issue of women’s management practices and continued employment of women. Finally, we conclude this section with the reasons for the relevance of our contribution in this field of research.Firstly, we explain the place of women in heart of the country with historical background of women and we give a definition of the workforce of women in each country and we mention the famous glass ceiling phenomenon. In this chapter, we give many figures and we note that despite our efforts to ensure that the comparison between France and Turkey is as rigorous as possible, we have not always been able to provide similar figures for both countries, since the calculation methods (including projections) are not the same. However, we have tried to demonstrate based on available data the impact of the glass ceiling effect in both cases studied. The main objective of this thesis is to draw attention to the barriers facing female executive directors, even after they have been promoted to middle and top level. These barriers appear to constitute a ‘second glass ceiling’ at the highest levels within large French and Turkish companies. The increasing number of women in the labor force particularly those of childbearing age, has been accompanied by increasing needs for childcare, flexible working arrangements and greater demands for equality in the workplace. This study particularly focused on the glass ceiling issues and the main career obstacles for female top managers/executives in Turkey and France. Prior to collecting the required data, a review was carried out in both countries, the current availability, and attitudinal studies related to the ‘glass ceiling’. A comparative descriptive analysis was conducted to show differences in career barriers for women and policies between countries. The first field study of this project generated 20 semi-structured interviews with 12 main questions concerning their career background and the glass ceiling syndrome with staff from 12 international companies in France and in Turkey. Interviews lasted for approximately one hour and were conducted in France and Turkey. Turkish and French women, despite the geographical, historical, and cultural ditferences between their countries, share a common position as a disadvantaged group in employment. The feminist movements in both countries engage in different debates and activities to promote change towards equality. The statistical indicators of employment and pay by sex, legislative provision and the sociological studies of equality of opportunity in employment in both countries suggest that there is still many opportunities for progress towards equality

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn the second half of the 20th Century in France, the teaching of physical education was marked by the increasing influence of sport within the discipline, the teachers’ status heterogeneity and the gender-differentiated division of recruitments. Although in 1941 the Vichy regime acknowledged the importance of sport within physical education on the basis of gender and status equality for recruitments, it was not until 1989 that the official entry-requirement examination – the only way into the teaching profession – was made available to both men and women. From single-sex physical education to coeducation, the broad range of life courses questioned the compliance and integration process of women into a historically male-oriented professional realm. Using data gathered from career files, interviews, surveys as well as union and professional press, this social gendered history on female physical education teachers examines the variety of paths with regards to their social, professional and familial experiences. This analysis focuses on the women in touch and in charge of their own lives. Time has shown a gradual liberation within the profession, and the expression of a relative freedom in being and acting, in careers that are embedded in family burden, though influenced today by an ideal of equality. This PhD study aims at being part of the renewal of sport and physical education history, by women, status and the individual, so as to put light on the professional issue at stake on coeducation in fine

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe feminist movements that arose in the 1970’s, promoting a radical contestation of patriarchy and committed to “women’s liberation”, helped challenge gender relations in many areas. Built upon an empirical research that combines archival work, questionnaires and interviews, my dissertation focuses on the women who took part in these mobilizations in France. It aims to understand how the involvement in this movement, characterised by the politicization of the private sphere, transformed “common” activists’ trajectories and those of their children. Using a local and comparative approach, this work first analyses the contexts in which the feminists evolved and were socialised. By tracing the feminist mobilizations that unfolded in Lyons and Grenoble between 1970 and 1984, it also revisits the history of the “second wave” French women’s movements. The study of the feminists’ activist careers then highlights the lasting socialising effects of their commitments and the impact they had on different areas of their life. Likewise, the use of sequence analysis reveals the trajectories they followed until present day, both from a political and personal prospect. Finally, a deeper focus on the activists who became mothers uncovers how intergenerational transmission of feminism occurred and which political contents the children inherited. In particular, this dissertation proposes several factors that help understand the differentiated appropriations of this heritage among the second generation

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation concerns two fox-spirit characters in two fantastic vernacular novels at the end of Qing period:Yaohuazhuan 瑤華傳 by Ding Bingren 丁秉仁 (1803) and Huliyuan Quanzhuan 狐狸緣全傳(1888) by Zuiyueshanren 醉月山人. I study in particular the demonic voice of these protagonists and the other feminine andhybrid characters in the text, which defies and delegitimizes patriarchal authority. This analysis uses Lacanianand Freudian psychoanalytical tools, trying to find signifiants in the text. The dissertation offers a great numberof excerpts translated for the first time. The fundamental concept which emerges is femininity linked to talent. The dissertation aims so to prove the socio-political value of fantasy in these texts, which takes vixens as beingallusions to real talented women of the time (nuns, courtesans, guixiu poets, performers)

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis focuses on the construction of migratory careers of women from North Korea, South Korea and Japan. The challenge is to understand the objective and subjective structure of these routes from historical and cultural heritage of the societies of origin, from migration policies, from biographical bifurcations and from social and work experiences in “totalitarian spaces”. In the first part, the thesis focuses on international migration of women as well as the methodology established to collect comparative data from suffering women in "mined" fieldwork and to analyze them. The second part tries to reconstruct the objective careers of migrants focusing on starting contexts, on the construction of migration projects and on the arrival contexts. The migrants will face the reiteration of grammar of contempt and injustice - in the sense of L. Roulleau-Berger – and the violence and dominations influenced by colonial or national imaginary of the host population. The “weak” bodies of these women, under individual and collective imaginary of host societies, become sensual bodies, sexual bodies, resistant bodies etc. and will build socially in "totalitarian spaces" erected in view of these imaginary. The third section analyzes the construction of the subjective Career of Women of the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Between the bloated obligations to adapt (imposed on migrants through process of mortifications - in the sense of Goffman –), the imposed roles and the adaptive strategies, they try to survive their disappointed migration imaginary by deploying tactics that define by the refusal of any personal participation, assimilation of the role imposed by the host society or emancipation

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis PhD is based on a qualitative, empirical and epistemological approach relied on interviews, self-administered questionnaire and ethnographic observation. The analysis of gender relationships and representations of female pastoral labor in the Pentecostal churches is the main topic of this research. We are looking for life stories items and commitment in a pastoral or episcopal female vocation inasmuch to understand gendered dimension and the motives of the young ladies to look for such a well known male profession for which they have been banned for centuries. This religion of the Reborn seems to give an opportunity for climbing the social ladder and awakens the desire for material goods and spiritual prosperity. Many questions are at stake with the female pastoral vocation. How to interpret the ease with which one becomes a pastor (how shall we figure out) the fact that it is very easy to become a pastor in the Democratic Republic of Congo ? How to define the current female role of pastors or bishops ? How to understand the permanent tension between the female vocation, the social stereotypes and the linked body alienation ? Although, they must have leadership roles that have always been the privilege of the male clerics ? Facing the current challenges of a changing society, how do they combine faith, femininity, leadership and professional skills ? What are the roles of pastors and bishops when they belong to the female sex ? Does the hieratic function change in this case ? What are the new dimensions of the religious profession practice ? Are they more concerned with social or family issues ? Do they refer to personal intimacy or to a new dimension of the sacred ? This PhD is trying to answer all these questions. It shows moreover new faces of the religious profession practice through the coming out of female pastors and bishops. It provides new indications regarding the religious changes that have taken place in recent years in Sub- Saharan Africa in general and in DR Congo in particular

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleWomen artists are underrepresented at the highest levels of artistic, symbolic and economic reputation, although they make up the majority of art school students as well as artists. Drawing on sociology of work, gender, art and education, this PhD dissertation explains this paradox. It analyses the making of gender inequalities within a very prestigious French art school and how these affect the entrance into an artistic career, survival in the profession and access to reputation of its graduates in contemporary art. The joint analysis of quantitative data from an artist ranking (ArtFacts), biographical interviews and ethnographic observations sheds light on the gendered construction of artistic careers. Whether it is during the recruitment by the art school, the selection in a studio, student jobs, the invitation to exhibit one’s work or being represented by a gallery, women’s gradual disappearance plays out in co-optation processes. At different stages in the career, the stigma of motherhood restricts their employability and their heterosexualization limits opportunities for self-promotion. Access to the conventions of the contemporary art world and integration into professional networks, particularly in the art market, are sexually differentiated. Nevertheless, different social, economic, educational or institutional resources allow some women to bypass the constraints weighing on women’s artistic careers, and to gain reputation

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn France, 30 % of business owners are women, but further development seems difficult to achieve. A strong expansion of women’s entrepreneurship implies major financial stakes, and the actors of our economy, as well as the public authorities, are becoming fully aware of this. To accompany this growing awareness, it seems important to undertake research to understand the way in which women run businesses. In accordance with this goal, this thesis examines the entrepreneurial process of women in France. The implementation of a longitudinal multiple-case study led to twenty-six interviews with ten women business owners. Ten additional interviews were carried out with organizations counselling and accompanying entrepreneurship, and with public institutions. The results show the logic that is specific to women’s entrepreneurship, and the criteria chosen by women to assess the success of their career as business owners. A typology of the nine key dimensions which make up this women’s entrepreneurial process was then drawn up. A general discussion shows how the family and social environment, greatly influenced as they are by gender-related issues, must be taken into account in any analysis of the development of women's entrepreneurial process

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe political participation is one of important indications to measure the process of participation of the citizenship. Taiwan has the highest percentage of women political participation (22,2%) in parliament in Asia. This research aims to find that those indications symbolize a real fact or simply an illusion ? What is the type that these women participate in the politics and what's their process in political socialization ? In this research we find five different types, "familial", "linkage with their husband", "decision by political machine", "participation spontaneity", and "Chüan-Tsun - village of garrison". These types present the process of political participation of Taiwanese women. Although Taiwanese women have an excellent note in politcs, they are still conservative when they are in the conflicts between political norm and gender norm in Legislative Yuan. At the same time, they cooperate frequently with the women organizations to reform the article of law for ameliorating the situation of women. Those female legislators who consider problems as the body security of women, the work of women, the inequity of the civil code, and the problems of marriage with the foreign women are the urgent issues for resolution of the Taiwanese women in the actual society

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIt is timely to talk about the political involvement of women in France in a context that would be equally represented. Through their biographies, their paths activists and elected office, their careers and the exercise of their practices undertaken in this particular field : what determines a woman to become professional in politics ?Thus, why there are still too few women in France to run for elective office while the latter show themselves aware of the problems facing our society and are willing to make changes to social evolution, both through their actions and through their votes for which they are mobilized by appointing representatives to guarantee a given policy. Clearly, women are totally entrenched in politics as they debate the issue and make it like any other citizen. Their turnout attests. In that case, why are they so poorly integrated into the political system ? What will lock their public participation ?To do, our survey will deal with the women’s socialization and professionalization in the peculiar political universe where the power is synonymous with manliness, through a gendered comparison of the feminine and masculine careers

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis research addresses the question of executive career success and gender. In the context of profound transformations in company structure, it is necessary to examine the way careers are considered, whether traditionally as organizational careers or through the concept of the “new careers”. Executives have experienced significant changes, one of which is feminization. But feminization does not equal homogenization, and the careers of women executives remain different—most often non-egalitarian—from those of men. This feminization plays a role in career model changes affecting all managers alike, especially in their expectations regarding the balance between work and personal life. This thesis uses the method of life histories to identify why and how gender influences career success. A preliminary approach deals with the clarification of career conceptions for male and female executives, the issue of balance between professional and private spheres. It concludes that this question of balance arises in different manners for women and men. The results of this empirical study using the method of life histories show how conceptions of executive careers and career success have evolved. A modelling of action logics leading to career success is proposed, with an emphasis upon behavior differences between women and men. The principal contributions of this research are the clarification and study of a concept according to gender (a variable still too infrequently considered in management studies), the use of an original methodology, and the modelling of action logics leading executives, women and men alike, towards career success

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleWomen have always been an inherent part of the workforce. They have been playing a fundamental role throughout history; however, they have been considerably underrepresented in top management positions. The existent barrier between middle and top management positions entitled “Glass Ceiling” remains almost as impassable as it has been 20 years ago, even though the number of educated women who have entered the labor market has substantially increased. The purpose of this research is to identify why the number of women in the top management positions of the Lebanese banks remains minim. As such, the primary object lies in analyzing the correlation between the aspiration and ambition of women to access the highest levels in the organization’s hierarchy and the glass ceiling phenomena. Moreover, this study focuses on the leadership styles adopted by these women; it aims at measuring the impact of the adopted style on the hierarchical advancement in the chosen career. In Lebanon, the banking sector is eager to reduce professional discrepancies; however, these gaps remain existent between men and women. Several factors, some of which are explicit – such as training & development and mobility, others implicit such as the working schedules and the maternity leaves, interact and interrelate to explain the less favorable career paths that women face. A close-ended questionnaire has been communicated throughout a secured website to middle management women in 6 banks operating in Lebanon in order to determine the relationship between the identified dependant and independent variables. The hypothesis statements were accepted as true; stipulating that several factors affect the perpetuity of the glass ceiling

This thesis focuses on issues regarding educational justice in Canadian higher education institutions. We are specifically interested in the low education rates of indigenous university students. We adopted an intersectional perspective and chose to exclusively work with indigenous women pursuing higher education at the university level. The analysis of the school career of indigenous women is particularly enlightening to better understand the justice −or injustice− of Canadian educational systems because of the complexity of the multiple forms of oppression they face. The social justice theory of Amartya Sen, founded on the capability approach, and the main concepts to which it relates, shape the basis of this study’s theoretical and conceptual framework. This theory focuses on the individuals’ choices of being and doing. The main objective of this thesis is to assess the influence of the context of studies on the possibilities of indigenous women to achieve the school career they want. Based on a multicase study, we investigated two universities in the province of Quebec (Canada). One of the universities offers very limited support to indigenous students, while the other has numerous measures, policies and services directed towards indigenous students. In each university, we conducted a three-staged data collection process: a) an educational policy analysis (national, provincial and of local policies); b) semi-structured interviews with staff members (faculty and administrative staff) on their professional experience with indigenous students; and c) life story interviews with indigenous women about their school careers. Our multidimensional analysis process looked at different social levels. At the macrosocial level, we conducted a literature review of the respondents' contexts of study. At the mesosocial level, we conducted a thematic analysis of the data gathered from interviews with university staff. At the microsocial level, we made a thematic analysis of the students' school careers. To conclude the analysis, we did a cross-sectional analysis of these three levels of data, which allowed us to meet our research objective. This thesis provides several interesting conclusions. Our results identify the effects of international, national, provincial and local initiatives on the deployment of our participants’ educational possibilities. Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis aims to understand the determinants of military women’s success. We hypothesized that their performances were related to professional identifications, self-assessments (self-efficacy, performance expectations and ambition) and the value they give to their domains of life. Three studies were conducted, apprehending the performance through the results in exams, trainings and a reflexive feedback on their careers. After having controlled the threatening aspect of their professional situation and having observed that women’s performance is lower than men’s, several mediating factors on the effect of sex on performance have been highlighted. The main factor explaining the performance of women is the expectation of performance compared to their colleagues. The more they consider being at the same level as their colleagues, the more they succeed, which is directly linked to self-efficacy and to the different professional identifications. To identify themselves as a sailor is more difficult for women in the military. The less individuals value their working domain, the weaker are their results, as their level of identification to the organization. However there is no interaction with the sex, and thus it is not a gender issue. At the beginning of women’s career, the dynamics of their work identity prevails in the development of their career, pushed by their professional ambition, while the effects of their conjugal status on their performance, mediated by their domains of life enhancement, would intervene secondly

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleWidow of Berthold Rembolt first, then of Claude Chevallon, Charlotte Guillard became in 1537 heiress of France's oldest typography workshop. With Charlotte Guillard at its head, the Soleil d'Or managed to monopolise two specific markets, the law texts and the works of the Church Fathers. The purpose of our thesis is to investigate the practical conditions which made these publications possible. It will highlight the material arrangements of the production and selling of those books, and focus at the people who stayed at Charlotte Guillard's side. This will allow us to demonstrate the importance of her relatives at every step of the process, and to show the coexistence of various networks of collaborators who manage to work on a common basis despite, at times, opposite intellectual and ideological motivations. Calling on manuscript archives, physical bibliography, and an analysis of the prefaces and liminary epistles, this monograph allows us to write a holistic history of the intellectual endeavour, taking into account all the ideological, social and economic conditions entering in its construction

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis research looks into the conditions for the structuring and continuation of a separate female activism within Breton organisations and farmers mobilisations. Mainly made up of professionals living in couples and situated at the intersection between gender equality advocacy groups, professional networks and support groups, farming self-help groups are a case in point to question not only the intertwining of professional and marital identities within activism but also the lability of rhetorical uses of equality and feminism within women-only professional spaces. The analysis of their position within the farmers’ representation spaces makes it compelling to question the degree of autonomy of the claims made in the name of women farmers, their influence upon the setting of professional agendas and their impact on the development of activist careers.Evidence was collected through an apparatus which consisted in the addition of a four-year-long observation of female groups’ formal and informal activities, an analysis of their professional literature, an inventory of their opinion columns inside the farm press, to which can be added semi-structured interviews with women farmers engaged in this activism and the setting up of statistical data about female mandates within Breton farm organisations since the 1990s. Drawing on an analysis which mixes gender studies, sociology of militancy and studies of farming professional representation, this PhD aims to demonstrate that women farmers groups and mobilisations shape the features of a farming “women cause” although it is subordinated to corporatist interests and seen through the lenses of the normative ideal of complementarity between the sexes. Being a repository of interlinked professional, organisational and matrimonial standpoints, female activism spaces lead to the ambivalent politicisation of plural belongings. These multiple affiliations can be a catalyst for protest as well as a way to reproduce sexual hierarchies and social and political order

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis doctoral dissertation focuses on women issue entrepreneurs addressing the cause of female leaders, i. E. Women entrepreneurs and CEOs who are involved in gendered professional organizations denouncing the underrepresentation of women in executive positions in the business world. At the crossroads of a sociology of gender, collective action and elites, the dissertation aims to show that these female leaders promote a gendered cause of the dominant class, equality by and for the top of the social hierarchy founded on a differentialist definition of gender equality. The socio-history of women issue entrepreneurs shows first that though these women may have claimed to be "feminists" in the 1950s, there is a hiatus between the cause of female leaders and the feminist movement from the 1970s onwards. Second, my fieldwork, combining qualitative methods and quantitative instruments has enabled me to map the field of the cause of women leaders, where organizations, whose reference remains the economic sphere, use the repertoire of the cause of women (gender-specific groups) but also and above all of employers' organizations (professional sociability, expertise and services), while trying to combine two identities (woman and manager) the second taking precedence over the first. The sociology of practices and trajectories of committed women leaders, considered during the specific period of the campaign in favor of a law setting quotas for women on company boards as well as during a "regular" period reveals the “permeability” of “selfless” professional sociability. Activist and professional career paths indeed develop in parallel

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis focuses on the role of French film producers as central figures in the production process of each film. Notwithstanding their important contribution, film producers are largely forgotten in the history of the seventh art and little known to the general public, the studies having focused more on actresses, screenwriters and directors. It is precisely this lack that the present research proposes to fill by exploring the careers, the motivations, the difficulties encountered and the daily life of the French film producers, by highlighting what they brought, by showing how they made to evolve the profession of producer and in particular how much they influenced the economy of the cinema and shaped, by their work, our imagination. Our analysis is articulated in three stages, in order to understand the process that has favored the advent of women in French film production since the Nouvelle Vague until today. The project to enhance the role of producers not only reveals a part of the history of the seventh art, but also to ask the question of film production declined to the feminine at the heart of the reflection on the work. Our thesis aims to reveal, through the words, actions and management of producers, the history of the seventh art through a new perspective, to better understand the cultural reality and its contradictions. It is certain that there can be no question of the history of cinema without these women

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAt the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, Berta Zuckerkandl (1864-1945), Austrian salonnière and journalist, engaged actively in artistic, cultural and political exchanges between France and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Being on familiar terms with Georges Clemenceau gave her the opportunity to exchange ideas with artists and intellectuals in Paris, including Rodin, Carriere, Raffaelli, and Geffroy. Her salon in Vienna gathered some of the most pioneering personalities of the Wiener Moderne...- Bahr, Klimt, Wagner, Mahler...- and thus formed the centre of a vast social network within Europe. Being a spokeswoman of the Vienna Secession, Zuckerkandl established herself as one of the most active contemporary art critics. She guided artists and introduced the public into modern art by drawing on French initiatives to influence the art's development. The present study thus aims at highlighting her role in the dynamic artistic exchange between Vienna and Paris. It will first present Zuckerkandl's biography in order to draw attention to her privileged position in the exchange of the French and Austrian cultures. Secondly, it will show her impact on artistic Austrian groups and provide a detailed analysis of a corpus of selected documents dealing with modern art. It will finally discuss her interventions in favour of French artists and the reception of their works in Austria by highlighting the artistic, cultural and political aims pursued by Zuckerkandl, who was determined to preserve the Austrian culture despite the war and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAt the crossroads of political historical sociology, social history of ideas, and political sociology of collective memories, this research starts from an interrogation on the republican integration dynamics of political radicalism. Itfocuses on explaining the conditions in which Louise Michel, a 19th century woman and anarchist, has become an eligible icon for pantheonisation in 2013. The longitudinal analysis of Louise Michel's career broadly questions the processes of canonization, circulation and transmission which characterize the schemes of political celebration. Initiated by the monographic study of Louise Michel's numerous apparitions, from the last third of the 19th century to the early21st century (press, speeches, memorial events, biographies or textbooks), this essay highlights how a politically marginalized character turns into a leftist icon. It's only by apprehending the political posture and social background ofher interpreters that one can acknowledge the different areas and forms of commemoration. The process of institutional recognition of Louise Michel's legacy is made possible on the one hand by the pacification process of the officialremembrance of the Paris Commune, and on the other hand by the incorporation of Women History in state feminism. It explained the enlargement of both collective and individual identification to Louise Michel's figure. It also authorizedthe hypothesis of Louise Michel's entry to the republican Pantheon. However, this thesis demonstrates as well that some resistance mechanisms remains. The edification of Louise Michel's emblematic figure isn't a linear process but issubject to multiples appropriations that coexist nowadays. Historical figure in collective memories poses a divisive mechanism, characterized by shifting conjunctures that confront forces at the crossroads of different political, activist, academic and intellectual spaces

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe Plan Nord, an economic strategy to develop and extract natural resources in northern Quebec, and the departure point of this study, has been a matter of controversy in Quebec since 2011. This study looks specifically at the resistance of the innu ishkueu (Innu women) to the mining-related aspects of the Plan by examining the involved women’s paths of engagement. Analysis is based on a three-month field study carried out in the communities of Uashat mak Mani-Utenam and Matimekush-Lac John, during which semi-structured interviews were conducted. This research jointly uses aboriginal feminist theories, the concept of everyday resistance, and the study of militant careers, in order to demystify aspects of the innu ishkueu political voices that are being raised in defence of the land. First, an ethnohistorical perspective of Innu women’s resistance to mining is presented. This is intended to contribute to other initiatives to provide alternatives to the dominant narrative of Quebec’s mining history (white, male), which has had the effect of doubly obscuring aboriginal women’s perspectives. This is followed by an examination of the paths of engagement and the types of community involvement of the women interviewed. This section leads to examination of the extent to which Innu women’s local modes of action are being transferred to their struggle to defend the land. Lastly, the paper presents an analysis of the construction of innu ishkueu political subjectivities using theories on the politics of resistance of aboriginal women.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAlthough much progress experienced by women in the labour market, several challenges remain in terms of representation of women in strategic positions in Québec organizations, despite that they are more educated than men. Our study focuses on barriers contributing to this situation, particularly the effects of motherhood on career aspirations, and by extension on the career paths of female university graduates. This qualitative study was conducted using primary data collected from female members of the Ordre des conseillers en gestion des ressources humaines agrées (CRHA) et conseillers en relations industrielles agrées (CRIA) du Québec. By our results, we have shown that a variety of factors - societal, organizational, individual and family - makes unreachable strategic positions in organizations by women. Among these factors, motherhood has the effect of negatively influencing the career trajectories by reducing the time investment in the work and the geographical and international mobility of women. Our results also argue that having children has the effect of directing career aspirations of women towards more balance. In this way, women would make choices promoting better work-family balance in their life. Thus, this career aspiration has the effect of influencing the career trajectories of mothers into jobs where flexible schedule is possible, as is the case of opting for self-employment or a job applicant does not travel outside, for example. Finally, this study contributes to the literature on factors influencing women's career trajectories. In fact, the mediating effects of career aspirations between motherhood and career trajectories have been not very studied up to now. This study observes the mechanisms of career choice at this time of women's lives.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAround the world, only a few studies try to understand the barriers to career progression of women technicians in the film industry. Those few studies show that women are underrepresented in key role person and are overrepresented in jobs considered traditional areas of work for women. In Quebec, we note that women represent the majority of assistants props on set, but are only a minority in lead props set positions. The purpose of this study is to understand why women are underrepresented in key positions by highlighting the factors that influence the objective career success of women assistants props on set. This qualitative study was conducted using primary data collected from interviews with seventeen stakeholders in the industry : women and men in the props profession, two women producers and a union representative of the Alliance québécoise des techniciens de l’image et du son (AQTIS). The data analysis suggests that gender stereotypes are still ingrained in the Quebec film industry. Women assistants props on set interviewed are assigned based on stereotypical female duties and most of them are kept away from the set in their work. Consequently, they have few occasions to develop valuable skills that are mostly associated with stereotypical male qualities to become key props on set. Furthermore, props work teams are often made up of a key props man and a woman assistant props who work together in a steady way from contract to contract. This professional duo provides a certain form of job security for the women assistants props on set because the key props on set is in charge of finding contracts. However, this situation also prevents them from varying their work experience to progress in the profession. We also note that when the key props on set act as a mentor for his or her assistant, this relationship tends to positively influence the career progression of assistants. However, we also note that it is mostly men assistant props on set who have access to those mentors. Also, in this profession, motherhood appears to be a main constraint in women’s career because most mothers balance their work life and their family life by finding multiples strategies. For example, they tend to reduce their working hours and their income because they prioritize their family.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleStarting from the theme of fitness practice, the following study explores the reality of women engaged in a online fitness coaching role and offers a sociological analysis of their experience. At first, the thesis presents a reflection on the individual responsibility for health that weighs on the individual today, reinforce by a popular media discourse, the ‘‘healthism discourse’’, leading to a moral obligation to maintain oneself by taking charge of their health through physical activity and diet. This conception of health has facilitated the body’s assessment of state of health: to be considered a healthy individual, one must have a fit body. The new female aesthetic standard is a body that is not only slim, but also firm and muscular. Fitness being a practice that allows the achievement of such a body, becomes a privileged means for many women when it comes to taking charge of their body. The brief subsequently highlights the emergence of the use of Internet and social media as a source of health information leading to many personal trainers investing in sites such as Facebook and Instagram. Recourse to personalized support in its practice of fitness from social networks is now possible and finds takers more specifically among women. The analysis of this study is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with five Quebec women who have taken on the role of online fitness coach on the social network Facebook. Engagement in an online fitness coach role is treated as a ‘‘career’’ through which we identify different phases undertaken by coaches in order to develop their ‘‘online fitness coach career’’ (connected, distinguished, constant). We then analyze the various tools, strategies and discourses they use in order to supervise and encourage the engagement of their customers in the practice of fitness from the angle of a ‘‘biopedagogy’’.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleContext and objectives. Criminal careers has been a subject of interest among criminologists for over 80 years. This research has allowed a better understanding of the evolution of criminalised individuals over time. However, research focusing on the criminal careers of women are relatively rare, this being mainly attributed to the nature of the chosen sample. While overcoming the potential limitations found in previous studies, the objective of this research is to conduct a comparative study of criminal careers among men and women (as of 18 until 47 years old) under provincial jurisdiction. Method. The sample consists of 3,320 offenders under provincial jurisdiction. The sample includes 216 female participants (6.5%) and 3104 male participants (93.5%). Descriptive statistics will be presented in order to provide a detailed portrait of offenders from 18 to 47 years old. Then, the categorical latent variable approach will be used. This type of analysis provides an estimate of sub-groups of offenders within the population that follow the growth curves separately. Thus, the proportion of individuals belonging to each of these subgroups can be estimated. Results. Women have a lower incidence of crime than men especially at the beginning of a criminal career; however this difference disappears towards the age of 40. It appears that men and women, at a certain period of time have similarities in their criminal careers. However, the prevalence of criminality among women is quite different from men. Indeed, it appears that women begin their criminal careers later than men, with a higher proportion of crimes against property. The juvenile history of criminal offence influences the perseverance in criminal careers among men and women, regardless of the type of offence. Conclusion. The results demonstrate the relevance of the difference between men and women during their criminal career. It should be one of the top interests for criminologists since women have different risks leading to offenses, as well as frequency and type of offense. Moreover, they appear to begin their criminal careers later than men.
