La presnete obra, es el resultado de uno de los com- ponentes de un proyecto multidisciplinario e inte- rinstitucional titulado “Caracterización de la Pesca Arte- sanal en la Península de Yucatán: Identificando Unidades de Manejo”, financiado por el conacyt (Fondo sep-cona- cyt-Clave 252215), el cual nos permitió acércanos a la pesca artesanal desde varios ángulos considerando los recursos, los usuarios, y sus problemáticas. El trabajo en equipo con investigadores de varias disci- plinas y estudiantes de posgrado y licenciatura del cinves- tav-ipn Unidad Mérida, umdi Sisal-unam y del Instituto epomex-uac, y múltiples estudiantes de Servicio Social y Prácticas Profesionales, rindió frutos. Este es un esfuer- zo de tres años de trabajo, y si bien tratamos de integrar la mayor información disponible a la mano, en sistemas dinámicos como la pesca, queda aún mucho por conocer, entender y problemáticas por abordar. A continuously rotating central texture (center) is presented together with a patterned surround oscillating back and forth. Generally, rotation of the surround induces misperceptions of the center’s angular velocity, which are known as induced rotational motion: a physically rotating center is perceived as turning faster when counterrotating with its surround and turning slower when co-rotating. However, during co-rotation, additional velocity misperceptions are observed: (a) a percept of motionless center (freezing rotation illusion) arises when the average angular velocity of the surround is fixed to a much higher value than that of the center and the appropriate oscillation frequency is set, and (b) a percept of the center sticking to its surround (rotational motion capture) arises when the average angular velocity of the surround is lower than the center velocity but higher than a given fraction of it.

Alan Berkman (1945–2009) was no campus radical in the mid-1960s; he was a promising Ivy League student, football player, Eagle Scout, and fraternity president. But when he was a medical student and doctor, his politics began to change, and soon he was providing covert care to members of revolutionary groups like the Weather Underground and becoming increasingly radicalized by his experiences at the Wounded Knee takeover, at the Attica Prison uprising, and at health clinics for the poor. When the government went after him, he went underground and participated in bombings of government buildings. He was eventually captured and served eight years in some of America's worst penitentiaries, barely surviving two rounds of cancer. After his release in 1992, he returned to medical practice and became an HIV/AIDS physician, teacher, and global health activist. In the final years of his life, he successfully worked to change U.S. policy, making AIDS treatment more widely available in the global south and saving millions of lives around the world. Using Berkman's unfinished prison memoir, FBI records, letters, and hundreds of interviews, Susan M. Reverby sheds fascinating light on questions of political violence and revolutionary zeal in her account of Berkman's extraordinary transformation from doctor to co-conspirator for justice

This chapter features a scene from a play entitled Endangered Black Girls (EBG), based on the lived experiences of Black girls the author has worked with in an after-school program (not SOLHOT) and has learned about through news stories. Theorizing the process of writing and performing EBG on through to subsequent productions made possible only because of the show's original cast, this chapter illustrates how creative means of expression make it possible to fully capture the complexities of Black girlhood and that attending to the complexities of Black girlhood is necessary to affirm Black girls' daily lives. Importantly, performances of EBG generated new ideas for ways Black women and girls could be present with each other, and the play was a primary catalyst for suggesting and co-organizing Saving Our Lives Hear Our Truths (SOLHOT) as transformative collective and creative work.

Word of mouth (WOM) reflects informal communication between private individuals that evaluates goods and services (Anderson, 1998). It provides a highly credible means of persuasion because the communicator is not seen as having a vested interest in selling the recommended product or service. In this chapter, WOM is conceptualized as a type of advice between private parties (typically consumers), focused on goods or services, and not necessarily purposeful or directive. WOM is a very powerful tool, especially given the relatively new focus in marketing on customer engagement and the customer’s role in value co-creation in the context of market offerings. However, over the decades, a number of myths have developed surrounding the effects of WOM. These myths are challenged within a review of the research literature. Suggestions for future research directions, research methods to capture WOM, and some best practices are also discussed.

Popular definitions of religious literacy don’t capture the reality of lived religion in a plural age. Using language as a metaphor for religion, this chapter differentiates between religious fluency among co-religionists and the ability to read and interpret the vocabulary of the “language” of the religious other. Whereas advocates for biblical literacy and world religions courses often reinforce an essentialist understanding of religion that presents only the “standard” version of a language, this chapter suggests an alternative 3B Framework that encourages students to consider how the interrelationship of belief, behavior, and belonging creates religious “dialects.” A pedagogy built around the 3B Framework encourages students to compare and contrast the construction of religious languages in a linguistic mode, analyzing the importance of belief, behavior, and belonging for individuals or communities. This framework opens possibilities for inter-religious dialogue between “multilingual linguists” who can engage the most meaningful aspects of interlocutors’ religious identity.
