Der volle Inhalt der QuelleRydberg atoms are atoms excited to states with a very high principal quantum number, where the valence electron orbits very far from the nucleus. This large distance imparts exceptional properties to Rydberg atoms compared to ordinary atoms, which has made them central to many developments and applications of modern experimental quantum physics. In particular, they exhibit transitions in the radiofrequency (RF) and terahertz (THz) domains with very large dipole matrix elements, making them extremely sensitive to electromagnetic fields in these frequency domains. This has led over the last ten years to the emergence of a new technology of RF and THz field sensors, where the amplitude of the field is measured by performing electromagnetically induced transparency spectroscopy of the Autler-Townes doublet induced by the interaction between the field and Rydberg states of atoms in a thermal vapor. Such sensors offer several advantages over classic antennas, including a greater sensitivity, a wider frequency range, a size independent from the frequency of the measured field, a significantly reduced need for calibration, and the ability to measure, in addition to the amplitude, the phase and the polarization. All these benefits make Rydberg atoms-based RF field sensors excellent candidates for applications in telecommunications, radar systems, and the space sector. Currently, these sensors are the subject to numerous works aiming at improving their performance in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, measurement bandwidth or spatial resolution. The use of cold atoms instead of thermal vapors represents a promising avenue in these goals, due to their better coherence and strongly reduced Doppler effect. Additionally, cold atoms are suitable for other forms of spectroscopy that are potentially more robust in certain aspects. This thesis focuses on the experimental study of a new approach for RF field sensing using cold Rydberg atoms, based on trap-loss spectroscopy. It consists in making the RF field interact with a set of ⁸⁷Rb atoms cooled and confined in a magneto-optical trap, and in probing the Autler-Townes doublet created by the field through a trap depletion effect. The mechanism responsible for the losses is the ionization of the atoms under the action of background blackbody radiation. This study involved the development of an entire experimental setup to perform trap-loss spectroscopy. Despite a low measurement bandwidth, the method proposed here has demonstrated a deviation from linearity of less than 2%, a sensitivity of the order of 250 µV/cm/Hz1/2, as well as an absence of drifts over several hours of measurement, with a resolution of the order of 5 µV/cm. Moreover, this method is easier to implement than other approaches involving cold atoms, and theoretically allows for determining both the amplitude and the frequency of the field. In this manuscript, we will describe the principle, setup and implementation of our experimental apparatus, present the results of the measurement performed with it, and then analyze its metrological performance, advantages and limitations

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe recent advancement in MRI systems and the increase of the static magnetic field strength were accompanied by a strong concern about the effect of RF electromagnetic fields on patients. The effect can be increased by the use of conductive elements inside the volume coil as in the case of endoluminal coils used to analyze digestive walls. These coils lead to an increase of the local SAR which is induced by RF electric field in the presence of the coaxial cable connecting the coil to the MR system, resulting in strong local heating. Giving that these coils have the potential to present a real benefit to the patient, it worth to overcome these limitations. Accordingly, the first objective of the thesis is the development of a fully optical endoluminal receiver coil. An optical active detuning system has been developed and characterized. The NMR images show a signal-to-noise ratio distribution similar to that obtained with conventional detuning techniques, thus validating the efficiency of the optical detuning. Concerning the electro-optical conversion and the optical transmission of the NMR signal, experiments were performed to overcome constraints related to the use of waveguide for electro-optical conversion by Pockels effect. Moreover, the importance of monitoring global and local SAR during MRI exams remains a need which is not limited only to the endoluminal coils. The second objective of the thesis is then the experimental validation of an electro-optical probe for real-time measurements of RF electric field. This probe can measure the RF electric field in air and in biological media at 3 T and 4.7 T MRI systems and allows the estimation of the local SAR

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIntegrated technologies allow to develop magnetic measurement systems on chip. Since they can be integrated using any standard manufacturing process, Hall effect sensors are particularly attractive for low cost magnetometers design. Thus, the first part of this thesis is focused on the improvement of this type of sensors using electronic circuits. We demonstrate that the association of a specific circuit and a Hall effect sensor of a particular shape allows to reach any absolute sensitivity. We also propose a new method for canceling the piezo-resistance effect which is responsible for a parasitic cross-sensitivity. The developed Hall effect sensors are particularly useful for low voltage technologies and for measurement systems subjected to vibrations. Thanks to the rise of nanotechnologies, thin film ferromagnetic based devices and more particularly magnetic tunnel junctions should be part of the standard components of microelectronics industry very soon. Thus, in the second part of this thesis, we studied the potentialities of this new device and we propose a new measurement technique based on the fluxgate principle generalized to two dimensions and applied to the magnetic tunnel junction. The realized magnetometer allows to measure simultaneously and in a very localized way, two components of a magnetic field with a very high sensitivity. All the realized systems tends to benefit from a sensitive element using specific electronic circuits

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis work joins in a project consisting in developing prototype of an autonomous and smart RF sensor allowing the realization of a wireless sensor network in an industrial environment. This thesis deals with the study, the design and the realization of the radio-frequency part of the transmitter using the 863-870 MHz ISM band and the CMOS AMS 0.35µm technology. This transmitter includes all the functions from the local oscillator to the power amplifier. The integrated circuit occupies a surface of 0.22mm² and consumes approximately 27mA under a supply voltage of 3.3V. Numerous innovative principles were implemented and validated. All these principles can be easily transposed into other standards of communication and in other frequency bands. The results of the post-layout simulation completely satisfy the specifications and confirm the simulations. Partial experimental characterization validates new architectures proposed

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleMagnetic resonance imaging {MRl) in veterinary practice employs low magnetostatic field devices which have numerous advantages such as their low maintenance and initial cost. Yet, the radiofrequency {RF) coils commercially provided with these devices are dedicated to human morphology, therefore reducing image quality. ln this work, simple optimization methods for 0.2 T RF coils were developed for an implementation in research and preclinical studies. Optimization protocol was subdivided into two main steps. First, an analytical model was developed using MATLAB in order to estimate the intrinsic signal to noise ratio variations with coil and imaged sample characteristics. Validation of the model was assessed thanks to quality factor comparison between simulated and measured values. The use of the analytical model for two specific studies was described in a recently accepted publication. Second, active decoupling was investigated. lndeed, passive decoupling is the decoupling method implemented on the 0.2 T MR device at our disposal. However, this technique can lack of efficiency in some experiments, inducing imaging artifacts and reduced quality factor. Active decoupling method was therefore implemented. The electronic performances of the coils equipped this way were better than in passive decoupling. This active decoupling device combined with an inductive coupling connecting system was tested at 3 T to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a new universal connecting device, for which an article was recently submitted

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn this work, feasibility of gas sensors based on Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) dielectric resonator, operating with whispering-gallery modes, is presented. The gas or humidity adsorption modifies the TiO2 dielectric permittivity and such modification induces variation in the resonant frequencies of high-Q whispering-gallery modes in the millimeter-wave frequency range. Full-wave electromagnetic simulation demonstrates that the measurement of this variation allows the derivation of few parts-per-million (ppm) fluctuations in gas or humidity concentration. For validation purposes very first prototypes of resonator operating with whispering-gallery modes in the millimeter-wave frequency range are micro-machined. The measured performances confirm that such high-Q resonant modes are very sensitive to small variations in dielectric resonator permittivity. Moreover we validate experimentally that these small variations can be remotely detected from the RADAR interrogation of an antenna loaded by the whispering-gallery modes resonator
