The Master's thesis deals with the proposition of a suitable methodology to produce test specimens intended for tensile testing. This thesis will address the design and production of the ATC Kolín comapny's logo. Thesis will be supported by the use of CAD/CAM programs. The choice of materials, components and tools will also be specified. Milling strategy will be designed with the PowerMill program. Two different methods of production will be compared. First one is the conventional machining on the FV 25 CNC vertical knee milling plant with the Heidenhain iTNC 530 controlling system. Where as the second one is the additive rapid prototypong technology with the usage of Fused Deposition Modeling method. The thesis is finished by the technical-economic evaluation with analysis and comparison of production alternatives.

Over the last decade improvements in design technology has taken grand steps in changing the way we build the structures of tomorrow. Conventional drafting software like AutoCAD and Microstation are being challenged by tools that go beyond the two dimensional representational abilities of paper documentation and replacing it with complex three dimensional virtual construction files that are more comprehensible and offer more flexibility with respect to design and also in terms of inter-professional communication. My interest's lie in the new dialectic emerging between architects and fabricators, who ironically sit at opposite ends of the construction spectrum yet are now collaborating with the help of modern-day software. I envision these new tools as being pivotal in both reassigning the roles of design and creating a more seamless construction process. It is this modified construction process that I intend to explore through this thesis.

The project developed under the engineering studies, solves the problem of production of a prototype car using modern technology, reverse engineering and CAD / CAM. Based on the literary study of the issue, was designed process of digitization of the physical model of car, including the treatment and processing of data. Follow-up step was to verify the production of the additive rapid prototyping technology - FDM method. Verification of the results was performed on a vertical milling cantilever FV 25 CNC with control system Heidenhain iTNC 530 using a cutting strategies by PowerMILL CAM software. At the end of the resulting models edit as necessary.

The present master thesis deals with the application of workshop programming and advanced CAD / CAM technology to the design and production of differential holder and eccentric of Formula Student car. The first part characterizes and describes the technology of milling, drilling and boring. There is also a selection of material to be machined, including the characteristics of aluminium and its alloys. The following section describes the construction of differential holder and eccentric in the parametric program Autodesk Inventor and creation of CNC programs using the workshop programming and CAM of PowerMILL system. The conclusion section refers to the production of both components in the training centre BOSCH DIESEL s.r.o in Jihlava. The thesis is concluded with a technical-economic evaluation and analysis of both proposed production variants.

This work is focused on the problematics of small CO2 lasers and their possible use for commercial production. The first part describes devices available on the market and evaluation of their parameters. The practical part specifies the parameters that arise from the potential use of technology. Based on these parameters, design of the machine and its complete mechanical design are elaborated. Furthermore, the experimental part deals with the design of structural components, control system, electrical systems and in general a complex technical-technological solution of the equipment, including economic evaluation of the design. Part of the work is also the construction of the machine itself, including activation, adjustment and debugging for the considered production. The constructed machine was subject to testing to ensure required quality of production.

The diploma thesis deals with technological preparation of the production at a CNC machining center, equipped with FANUC control system. In cooperation with company AB KOMPONENTY s.r.o. has been used CAM software GibbsCAM and its extensions VoluMill. The first chapter is devoted to the basic properties of aluminum, aluminum alloys and their using in the industry. Furthermore, the chip foramtion in milling is analysed. The following is an analysis of trochoidal milling and research of CAM systems VoluMill and iMachining - systems based on a medium thickness of chip in rough milling opeartions. Next part deals with the design production process of the selected component, the choice of the blank and the processing of the control program with the VoluMill method for this component. The last chapter of the thesis is focused on the techno-economic evaluation for a given number of pieces and individual production technology.

To stay competitive in today’s fast-paced market, manufacturing companies must shorten their time-to-market and decrease their costs by efficiently utilizing their resources. Here, improved software and better software integration throughout the product realization process is considered to be a key enabler. The aim of this thesis work has been to investigate the current workflow in design and process planning to outline a cloud-based application to support these activities. Pains and bottlenecks in these workflows have been identified through interview and field studies at six Swedish manufacturing companies of different sizes, in different industries, and with different operational models. The major areas of improvement were identified whereof one them, the initial activity of understanding customers’ needs, was decided to further focus on. From receiving a request for quotation from the customer to acceptance of an order, the following time-consuming activities were recognized: understand and discuss design intent as well as suggest possible design changes to improve manufacturability, analyze and review 2D drawings and 3D models, and develop order quotations. In this thesis work, a mock-up prototype has been put forward. The intent with this is to bridge a gap that has been identified through the mapping between manufacturers needs and functionality of available CAD/CAM software and the identified areas of improvement from the workflow investigations. The proposed solution, as presented in the mock-up prototype, has been validated together with three of the studied companies. At its current state, further improvements and validations are needed. Nevertheless, if further developed, it has the potential to create value within the entire manufacturing value chain.
För att vara konkurrenskraftig på dagens snabbrörliga marknad måste tillverkande företag minska sina tid till marknad och reducera sina kostnader genom att utnyttja sina resurser mer effektivt. Här anses förbättrad programvara och bättre mjukvaruintegration genom hela produktrealiseringsprocessen vara en viktig möjliggörare. Målet med detta arbete har varit att undersöka det aktuella arbetsflödet i design och processplanering för att föreslå en molnbaserad applikation för att stödja dessa aktiviteter. Problem och flaskhalsar i dessa arbetsflöden har identifierats genom intervjuer och fältstudier hos sex svenska tillverkande bolag i olika storlekar, i olika branscher och med olika operativa modeller. De viktigaste förbättringsområdena identifierades varav en, den initiala aktiviteten för att förstå kundernas behov, beslutades att ytterligare fokusera på. Från att ha mottagit en offertförfrågan från kunden till acceptans av en beställning kunde följande tidskrävande aktiviteter identifieras: förstå och diskutera designintention samt föreslå möjliga designändringar för att förbättra tillverkningsförmåga, analysera och granska 2D-ritningar och 3D-modeller, och utveckla ordernoteringar. I det här arbetet har en prototyplösning tagits fram. Avsikten med denna är att överbrygga ett gap som har identifierats genom kartläggning mellan tillverkarens behov och funktionalitet av tillgänglig CAD / CAM-programvara och de identifierade förbättringsområdena från arbetsflödesutredningarna. Den föreslagna lösningen, som presenterades i prototypen, har validerats tillsammans med tre av de studerade företagen. Vid sitt nuvarande tillstånd behövs ytterligare förbättringar och valideringar. Om den vidareutvecklas har den dock potentialen att skapa värde för hela tillverkningskedjan.

Resumo: Os sistemas CAD/CAM têm auxiliado ortodontistas no planejamento e posicionamento de braquetes com o objetivo de minimizar os erros e melhorar a qualidade do tratamento. Este estudo teve como objetivo validar as mensurações realizadas no software do sistema eXceed™, avaliar a previsibilidade e as alterações dento-alveolares. A amostra foi composta por 24 adultos jovens, portadores de má-oclusão Classe I de Angle. Foram obtidas Tomografia Computadorizada de Feixe Cônico (TCFC) antes e após o tratamento para avaliar as alterações dento-alveolares. Modelos de gesso foram obtidos por moldagens das arcadas com alginato e posteriormente digitalizados por meio de um escâner de mesa 3Shape R700 (3Shape Dental System™, Copenhague, Dinamarca). Os modelos 3D foram convertidos em estereolitografia (.stl) pelo OrthoAnalyser™ e exportados para a plataforma eXceed™ para o planejamento e criação do setup virtual. Dispositivos de colagem indireta foram fabricados a partir dos modelos 3D com as informações da posição idealizada dos braquetes sobre o modelo virtual. Os pacientes foram submetidos ao tratamento ortodôntico com aparelho fixo e braquetes autoligados. Os modelos 3D dos setups digitais iniciais foram comparados com os modelos digitais dos casos tratados (após o completo alinhamento e nivelamento das arcadas com o fio de aço .019”x.025”). As mensurações lineares realizadas em ambos os grupos pelo software Geomagic® foram avaliadas empregando-se o sistema de classificação do American Bo... Computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) has been a focal research area for the manufacturing industry. Genuine CAD/CAM integration is necessary to make products of higher quality with lower cost and shorter lead times. Although CAD and CAM have been extensively used in industry, effective CAD/CAM integration has not been implemented. The major obstacles of CAD/CAM integration are the representation of design and process knowledge and the adaptive ability of computer aided process planning (CAPP). This research is aimed to develop a feature-based CAD/CAM integration methodology. Artificial intelligent techniques such as neural networks, heuristic algorithms, genetic algorithms and fuzzy logics are used to tackle problems. The activities considered include: 1) Component design based on a number of standard feature classes with validity check. A feature classification for machining application is defined adopting ISO 10303-STEP AP224 from a multi-viewpoint of design and manufacture. 2) Search of interacting features and identification of features relationships. A heuristic algorithm has been proposed in order to resolve interacting features. The algorithm analyses the interacting entity between each feature pair, making the process simpler and more efficient. 3) Recognition of new features formed by interacting features. A novel neural network-based technique for feature recognition has been designed, which solves the problems of ambiguity and overlaps. 4) Production of a feature based model for the component. 5) Generation of a suitable process plan covering selection of machining operations, grouping of machining operations and process sequencing. A hybrid feature-based CAPP has been developed using neural network, genetic algorithm and fuzzy evaluating techniques.

This dissertation presents the technology within BIM and its implication in the architectural and engineering design process. Since the 60 s, aerospace and automotive industries have already revolutionized the way of project with the CAD, and manufacture with the assembly lines. In AEC, the CAD became BIM, a new way of project, build and manage, from conception till life cycle building. This brought a project and construction time reduction, cost and environmental impacts decrease foreseen in LEED and merged in BIM.
Este trabalho objetiva apresentar a tecnologia contida no BIM e suas implicações no processo de projeto da arquitetura e engenharia civil. A partir de 1960, as indústrias, aeronáutica e automotiva, já haviam revolucionado a forma de projetar com o CAD, e de fabricar com as linhas de montagem. Na Arquitetura, Engenharia e Construção, o CAD está evoluindo para o BIM (Building Information Modeling), uma forma de projetar, construir e gerenciar, da concepção ao habite-se, aplicável a todo o ciclo de vida da edificação. Dessa forma houve não só uma redução no tempo de projeto e construção, mas também em custos e impactos ambientais previstos em normas internacionais incorporadas ao BIM.

Результаты работы: разработан готовый проект внедрения CAD/CAM системы в стоматологическую клинику «Жемчуг» с учетом особенностей предприятия. Практическая значимость: разработанный план может быть внедрен в любую стоматологическую клинику при учете особенностей предприятия. Экономическая эффективность предлагаемых в диссертации мер обусловлена тем, что внедряемая CAD/CAM система окупится на двадцать четвертом месяце после начала ее опытной эксплуатации и в последующем будет приносить стабильный доход.
The relevance of the topic of the master's thesis is due to the possibility of practical application of the methodology for the implementation of CAD / CAM systems in dental clinics. The scientific novelty of the research consists in analyzing the development of IT in various industries, identifying the preferential directions and innovative effects from the use of IT in industries. Results of work: a ready-made project for the implementation of a CAD / CAM system in the dental clinic "Pearl" was developed, taking into account the characteristics of the enterprise. Practical significance: the developed plan can be implemented in any dental clinic, taking into account the characteristics of the enterprise. The economic efficiency of the measures proposed in the dissertation is due to the fact that the implemented CAD / CAM system will pay off in the twenty-fourth month after the start of its trial operation and subsequently will bring a stable income.

Syftet med detta examensarbete har varit att ta fram handlingar åt räddningsverkets internationella avdelning, så att de på ett mer effektivt och ekonomiskt sätt kan leverera 10 fots sanitetscontainrar på internationella uppdrag. Kravet som ställdes var att de skall ha en livslängd på minst tre år i extrema väderförhållanden samt att de skall vara lätta att bygga om och anpassas för de etniska behoven. I examensarbetet har vi arbetat med ett antal skisser på toalettcontainer och duschcontainer som räddningsverket har fått granska och lämna synpunkter på, ut ifrån dessa skisser har vi arbetat fram ritningar. Rapporten beskriver hur vi har arbetat och jämfört olika material. Hur beräkningar har gått till för att hitta optimala lösningar på isoleringen och ytskikt. Examensarbetet utgör en bra kunskapsdokumentation som bör ligga som grund för nyframställning av sanitetscontainrar. Rapporten innehåller en del terminologi som kräver ett visst byggtekniskt kunnande och vana från ritningsläsning.

Ringing represents the main cause of signal distortion and communication errors in CAN FD networks, and it is generated by the repeated reflections owing to the inherent impedance mismatch in the physical bus of a CAN. Consequently, automotive manufacturers can exploit the potential of the CAN FD protocol only if ringing is suppressed. In this thesis is demonstrated that by inserting technologically innovative plug & play modules, called RACANs, it is possible to knock down ringing on the vehicle CAN network, allowing the use of the CAN FD protocol on existing CAN architectures with a very high level of in-vehicle communication reliability and without having to make any topological changes. The RACAN technology is described in detail, and the excellent results obtained in bench tests and in in-vehicle test are shown. This innovative product will allow car makers to be ready for the market demand of the next five years, without having to redesign and invest in the development of a new architecture.

Med strängare krav på miljöpåverkan och en konstant efterfrågan på högre prestanda är optimering en essentiell del av vår vardag. Genom korrekt arbetsmetodik och optimering kan den växande efterfrågan på både prestanda och minskad miljöpåverkan överträffas. Att utveckla ett optimalt koncept av en länkarm hos en prestandabil är ett konkurrenskraftigt steg med stor betydelse. Genom att i ett tidigt skede i produktutvecklingsprocessen kunna skapa en optimal design minskar risken för stora kostnader på grund av ändringar i de senare faserna och bidrar således till en ökad lönsamhet. Att utnyttja Finita Elementmetoden som en del av en CAE driven produktutvecklingsprocess är således en utmärkt väg att gå och bidrar starkt till ändamålet genom att lösa avancerade problem med en simpel och adaptiv metodik. Bilindustrin präglas av innovativa och effektiva lösningar där både FEM och RE är välkända metoder. Projektet ska upplysa innebörden av en strukturerad arbetsmetodik vid optimering genom implementering av ett flertal produktutvecklingsfilosofier kombinerat med FEM/FEA. Genom att optimera en länkarm från en Audi R8 Coupé V10 quattro tillämpas och utvecklas välfungerade och starkt begrundade metoder. Produktutvecklingsfilosofier såsom Reverse Engineering och ett iterativt arbetssätt resulterade i en förbättrad länkarm med lägre vikt såväl som minskade spänningar och deformation. En viktminskning på 22%, en spänningsminskning på 47% och en minskad teoretisk elastisk deformation på 33% uppnåddes. Utöver dessa förbättringar ökade även robustheten med 25%.
With harsher regulations of environmental impact combined with a consistent demand on increased performance, optimization becomes an essential part of our everyday lives. Through a well-developed methodology and optimization process, the tougher demands of both performance and environmental impact could be exceeded. Developing an optimal concept of a control arm in a high-performance vehicle application is a competitive step of great importance. By creating an optimal design in early development stages of the product development process, the economic impact could be minimized. This therefore leads to an increase in profitability. Involving the Finite Element Method as a part of the product development process is therefore an excellent path toward solving advanced problems through a simple and adaptive work methodology. The automotive industry is characterized by innovative solutions where both the Finite Element Method and Reverse Engineering are well-known methods. The project has a foundation that strongly represents the meaning of a systematical optimization methodology through various product development philosophies combined with FEM/FEA. Through optimization of a control arm from an Audi R8 Coupé V10 quattro proved and well-grounded methods are applied and further developed. Product development philosophies such as Reverse Engineering and an iterative work process resulted in an improved control arm with lower weight as well as decreased stresses and deformation. A weight loss of 22%, stress reduction of 47% and a reduced theoretical elastic deformation of 33% was achieved. Beyond these improvements an increased robustness of 25% was achieved.

Les problèmes majeurs de la génération automatique du dessin des masques des circuits intégrés sont la dépendance vis-à-vis des règles de dessin et le dimensionnement correct des transistors. Les méthodes traditionnelles, telles que l'utilisation de cellules pré-caractérisées, manquent de flexibilité, car les portes des bibliothèques (en nombre limité) sont dessinées et dimensionnées (independarnment de l'application) pour une technologie donnée. Les méthodes de synthèse automatique du dessin des masques ont pour but de surmonter ces problèmes. Les techniques les plus couramment utilisées sont le "gate-matrix" et le "linear-matrix". L'indépendance vis-à-vis des règles de dessin est obtenue en utilisant la technique de description symbolique (dessin sous une grille unitaire), et les dimensions des transistors sont définies par le concepteur ou par un outil de dimensionnement. Nous proposons une méthode et un prototype logiciel pour la synthèse automatique des masques, en utilisant le style "linear-matrix multi-bander". La description d'entree du générateur est un fichier format SPICE (au niveau transistor), ce qui permet d'avoir un nombre très élevé de cellules, en particulier les portes complexes (A01), et ainsi avoir une meilleure optimisation lors de la phase d'assignation technologique. Les macro-cellules générées doivent être assemblées afin de réaliser un circuit complet. Deux contraintes supplémentaires sont ainsi imposées au générateur: malléabilité de la forme et position des broches d'entrées/sorties sur la périphérie de la macro-cellule. Les macro-cellules sont assemblées en utilisant un environnement de conception industriel. Les contributions de ce mémoire de doctorat sont d'une part le développement d'un générateur de macro-cellules flexible ayant les caracteristiques d'indépendance aux règles de dessin et d'intégration dans un environnement de macro-cellules, et d'autre part l'étude detailée des paramètres qui déterminent la surface occupée, les performances électriques et la puissance dissipée des macro-cellules générées automatiquement.
The main problems of the automatic layout synthesis are the design rules dependence and the transistor sizing. The traditional layout synthesis methods, like standard-cells, are not flexible, since the cells in the libraries are designed and sized for a specific technology. In this way, the designer must change his library at each technology improvement. The automatic layout synthesis methods overcomes these problems (design rules dependence and transistor sizing). Examples of layout styles are gate-matrix and linear-matrix. The technology independence is achieved by symbolic description (layout under an unitary grid), and the transistor sizes are defined by the designer or by a sizing tool. From these two constraints, we develop an automatic layout synthesis tool, using a linear-matrix multi-row layout style. The input description for our tool is a Spice file. This descriptions allows to define a greater number of cells (mainly AOIs gates), resulting a technology mapping with less constraints. The generated macro-cells must be assembled in order to construct a complete circuit. Two additional constraints are then imposed to the generator : variable aspect ratio and placement of the inputs/outputs pins in the macro-cell border. The macro-cells are assembled by an industrial CAD environment. The main contributions of this thesis are the development of a macro-cell generator (with the characteristics of technology independence and easy integration in a macro-cell environment) and the analysis of the parameters playing a role in the area, delay and power consumption.

Ställningsbranschen är generellt sett starkt knuten till byggentreprenörers krav och behov. En ökad utveckling inom digitaliseringen av byggbranschen har satt större press på underentreprenörer i att vara delaktiga i den digitala projektplaneringen.  Med ökade krav från byggentreprenörer på dokumentation och projektering inom ställningsbranschen har programvaror utvecklats för att möta det behovet. En programvara som utvecklats i detta syfte är Layhers koncept vid namn Layplan. Syftet med denna studie är att belysa hur ställningsentreprenörer samt byggentreprenörer kan gagnas av en mer utbredd implementering av projekteringsverktyg för byggställningar. Detta genomfördes med hjälp av praktisk modellering i Layplan CAD samt litteraturstudier. Projektet inleddes med att studera litteraturen bakom hur ställning- och byggentreprenörer har arbetat med digitalisering. Därefter finns det en grundlig genomgång inom de vanligaste komponenterna för en ställning samt monteringsprocessen. Senare i rapporten har denna litteratur i kombination av modelleringen med byggställningen använts för att belysa vilka fördelarna är med en implementering av Layplan på arbetsplatsen.  Vad denna studie kom fram till var att en implementering av Layplan resulterar i bättre översikt och dokumentation när färdiga modeller projekteras och den tillhörande materiallistan används. Med korrekt användning kan Layplan reducera logistikkostnader, då materiallistan som genereras vid modellering ger korrekt antal komponenter för varje enskilt projekt.  De mindre konkreta fördelarna från studien är att det minskar risken för missar i kommunikationen mellan ställningentreprenören och byggentreprenören. När man kan se det färdiga resultatet som en 3D-modell innan monteringen har påbörjats minskar risken att ändringar i utformningen kan behöva ske under montaget av ställningen. De eventuella ändringar som byggentreprenören anses behöva göras på ställningen kan då ske i planeringsfasen och då inte under/efter produktionsfasen av byggställningen. Med detta i åtanke kommer man till frågan huruvida Layplan är en bra investering. Vad denna studie kom fram till är att för större till medelstora företag kan Layplan vara en bra investering som lönar sig i längden. För mindre företag kan det behövas fortsatta studier om den initiala kostnaden i tid och pengar kan generera värde.
The scaffolding industry historically has had strong ties to the needs of contractors who work in construction. The increased implementation of digital project planning has led to a greater need for subcontractors to be part of this process. With rising demands from contractors for improved documentation and BIM-compatibility, Layher has developed a software concept, called Layplan, which can be used to aid with this process. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate the advantages of implementation of digital tools in scaffolding. As part of this, a literature review will be conducted, and practical modelling of scaffolding will be conducted, primarily using Layplan CAD.  To aid in the reader's understanding of this subject there is a thorough description of the usual components and the building process of scaffolding. Initially, the focus of this thesis concerned studying the ways in which the construction and scaffolding industries currently use digitalisation in their usual work practice. Then this process was combined with results from practical modelling in order to demonstrate the advantages of scaffolding contractors using these tools in their everyday work practice.    One key finding of the present research was that the improved documentation digitalisation enables, can provide better oversight within day to day operations. When used optimally, Layplan can reduce the cost of logistics and enable contractors to predict more accurately the material requirements for each individual project. This approach also provides indirect advantages within the construction or scaffolding industry: it enables improved communication and also offers a way of ensuring that the completed project is as close to what the contractors had originally envisioned as possible. As contractors will be able to see the finished product as a 3D-model, it is likely that there will be fewer changes required to the project once scaffolding has been completed. With this approach, any modifications required can be made in the planning phase instead of during or after the production phase of the scaffolding.  Bearing this in mind, consideration needs to be given to the cost and benefits of contractors investing in Layplan. This study found that for larger and middle sized contractors this investment should pay for itself in the end. However, further studies will be needed in order to be able to draw conclusions as to whether Layplan is cost effective for smaller contractors.

My dissertation examines women's unique techniques and cultures of communication at the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp in Newbury, England between 1982-1985. Often referred to by participants as one of the "last movements before the internet," I look at Greenham as a site through which to think about how activists' communication and cultural practices in the 1980s shaped activist uses of the worldwide web and other new media technologies central to contemporary struggles. I argue that social movement media such as videos, newsletters, postcards, songs and songbooks both create movement culture at the time of their production, and carry movement ideas and their infrastructures into the future. A story told orally, a songbook, a manifesto, a recorded interview, a picture of a mass demonstration, all circulate across time and space. Through this movement, ideas and artifacts are transformed and incorporated as different people encounter and make meaning out of these cultural texts in different ways.

The European Train Control System (ETCS) as part of the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) is a train control and automation system, which has been introduced into the UK rail network. The major change with the introduction of the ERTMS has been the shift of the movement authority from signals outside on the tracks to inside the cab, and the introduction of speed profiles that the drivers must adhere to. The introduction of this new system triggered the need to understand its impact on the train driving task and train driver behaviour. In particular, the effect the ERTMS has on drivers’ cognitive strategies and demands. The overall aim of the thesis was to understand the effects of new train control and automation technology on train drivers’ behaviours. The research was conducted, using a mixed methods approach, in the rail environment with train drivers and rail experts. Literature reviews of existing train driving models, train driving research and associated issues of increasing control and automation on human behaviour; were used to provide the theoretical context for the thesis. The literature review highlighted that there was a potential shift in cognitive strategies and demands with the introduction of train automation and control technology. Due to the limited amount of research in train driving on the whole, but also train driving with automation and control technology, the majority of the literature hypothesised the possible impact of the introduction of automation and control technology. An exploratory study of some of the different forms of train driving in the UK, was used to generate insight about train driving with different forms of train technologies and provided the theoretical foundations for the following studies. The emerging cognitive themes also addressed the gap in knowledge about train driving with different forms of technologies. The emerging cognitive themes from this study included route knowledge and memory, monitoring, allocation of attention, anticipation, prioritisation and decision making. A semi-structured interview study with ERTMS drivers, addressed some of the questions raised in the previous study using ERTMS drivers’ subjective experiences. Since the exploratory study, the results demonstrated an adaptation and shift towards acceptance of the system and it also identified some of the driving strategies that had emerged. This chapter investigated drivers’ subjective experience, highlighting high-level strategy changes. A real world exploratory eye-tracking study with both conventional and ERTMS drivers on their normal timetabled routes, provided a wealth of data. The first level of the quantitative eye-tracking analysis, aimed to address the industry question of ‘heads up’ vs. ‘heads up, heads down driving’. It demonstrated a shift of typical visual attentional strategy from monitoring outside on the tracks to speed information inside the cab. Analysis of verbal protocol data collected in the eye-tracking study also provided some rich qualitative data about train driver strategies and demands. Further analyses of the eye-tracking data, identified events where there is a difference in visual behaviour between ERTMS driving and conventional driving, but also between each type of driving and its own baseline data. An expert elicitation workshop with ERTMS human factors experts, was used to generate requirements for a future train driving model. The main findings highlighted that several models are needed to help address some of the issues raised, as they could provide different uses, acting as ‘building blocks’ to the overall picture. Qualitative models can be used to provide the framework and language as a communication tool, whilst more quantitative models can be used to compute error and workload. Models need to be informed by cognitive theory but also focus on the train driving tasks and information used by train drivers. Finally, the studies presented in this thesis were used to develop an integrated human factors model of the influence of train automation and control technology on train driving and guidance was generated for future train driving models for both conventional and ERTMS train driving. The current research has contributed critical knowledge to both the academic literature but also informed human factors practitioners in the rail industry. The thesis has contributed novel understanding about train driving with a control and automation technology, which have already been utilised by the rail industry.

La thèse s'articule autour du thème des FPGA embarqués(eFPGAs). Ce manuscrit analyse les solutions existantes actuellement et discute les challenges et opportunités de ces technologies; une analyse en profondeur des échecs des tentatives passées est également donnée. Sur la base des solutions existantes dans la littérature, une structure de eFPGA à topologie de type grille est proposée, décrite en langage VHDL RTL. Cette solution comporte également les outils de programmation associés. Sur la base de cette proposition, des explorations sont menées quant à la pertinence des solutions proposées au sens de métriques d'actualité tells que densité logique, performance et consommation. Une des contributions notables de cette thèse repose sur la proposition d'une architecture de switch unifiée éliminant les blocs de connexions ainsi que l'interconnexion locale typique des FPGA actuels(telles que ceux modélisables dans le logiciel VPR) tout en autorisant une bonne routabilité. Toutes les expérimentations ont été menées sur une technologie CMOS 65nm faible puissance du fondeur STMicroelectronics, qui permet de fait d'obtenir des évaluations pertinentes. Une seconde contribution notable repose sur l'exploration de l'intégration de eFPGA dans un contexte système sur puce (SoC). Cette approche repose sur l'adjonction d'un eFPGA au sein d'un système intégré, au côté d'un processeur de type LEON3, la programmation s'effectuant sur la base d'une approche de type ESL. Deux explorations sont ainsi déclinées, comme unité intégrée au sein du processeur et comme coprocesseur. Les résultats présentés permettent ainsi d'analyser sous plusieurs angles les compromis possibles ainsi que les perspectives et limitations de ce type d'approches. Finalement, un cas d'étude est également présenté quant à l'intégration de mémoires de type magnétique (MRAM) au sein-même de l'architecture du eFPGA
The thesis extensively revolves around embedded FPGAs (eFPGAs). It conducts detailed survey focused on programmable technologies to investigate potentials and challenges of eFPGAs and probable failure reasons of several past attempts of different kinds. Based on survey knowledge, technology independent soft eFPGAs of FPGA-like mesh-based classical architecture with standard RTL programming flow areinvestigated. Detailed eFPGA architectural explorations (including CAD tools) are conducted to explore silicon-efficient (logic density, power, performance etc.)eFPGA architectures. Among notable innovations achieved is unified switch block with complete removal of connection block and local interconnect of classical mesh-based FPGAs (VPR-like) while maintaining good routing efficiency. All experiments are conducted on 65nm CMOS low powerSTMicroelectronics process to get practical silicon values and perspectives. Finally eFPGAs in systems (SoCs) potentials and challenges are addressed. A reconfigurable acceleration scenario with ESL exploitation (for programming ease) and full silicon tradeoffs visualization is presented with integration of eFPGA with LEON3 processor (as a functional and co-processor unit, with also highlighting potential flaws of functional unit in industrial perspectives). An interesting case study for perspectives of emerging MRAM memories for eFPGAs is also presented

This causal and correlational study was designed to extend the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and to test its applicability to Valencia Community College (VCC) Engineering and Technology students as the target user group when investigating the factors influencing their decision to adopt and to utilize VMware as the target technology. In addition to the primary three indigenous factors: perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and intention toward utilization, the model was also extended with enjoyment, external control, and computer self-efficacy as antecedents to perceived ease of use. In an attempt to further increase the explanatory power of the model, the Task-Technology Fit constructs (TTF) were included as antecedents to perceived usefulness. The model was also expanded with subjective norms and voluntariness to assess the degree to which social influences affect students decision for adoption and utilization. This study was conducted during the fall term of 2009, using 11 instruments: (1) VMware Tools Functions Instrument; (2) Computer Networking Tasks Characteristics Instrument; (3) Perceived Usefulness Instrument; (4) Voluntariness Instrument; (5) Subjective Norms Instrument; (6) Perceived Enjoyment Instrument; (7) Computer Self-Efficacy Instrument; (8) Perception of External Control Instrument; (9) Perceived Ease of Use Instrument; (10) Intention Instrument; and (11) a Utilization Instrument. The 11 instruments collectively contained 58 items. Additionally, a demographics instrument of six items was included to investigate the influence of age, prior experience with the technology, prior experience in computer networking, academic enrollment status, and employment status on student intentions and behavior with regard to VMware as a network virtualization technology. Data were analyzed using path analysis, regressions, and univariate analysis of variance in SPSS and AMOS for Windows. The results suggest that perceived ease of use was found to be the strongest determinant of student intention. The analysis also suggested that external control, measuring the facilitating conditions (knowledge, resources, etc) necessary for adoption was the highest predictor of perceived ease of use. Consistent with previous studies, perceived ease of use was found to be the strongest predictor of perceived usefulness followed by subjective norms as students continued to use the technology. Even though the integration of the task-technology fit construct was not helpful in explaining the variance in student perceived usefulness of the target technology, it was statistically significant in predicting student perception of ease of use. The study concluded with recommendations to investigate other factors (such as service quality and ease of implementation) that might contribute to explaining the variance in perceived ease of use as the primary driving force in influencing student decision for adoption. A recommendation was also made to modify the task-technology fit construct instruments to improve the articulation and the specificity of the task. The need for further examination of the influence of the instructor on student decision for adoption of a target technology was also emphasized.
