The significance of logistics administration in the contemporary, fast-paced business environment has significantly transformed the way organizations operate. This study investigates the interconnected impacts of logistics efficacy, efficiency, cost, quality, and differentiation on the performance of businesses. An in-depth analysis is employed to examine the effect of various logistics management facets on the financial and operational outcomes of a business. Efficient logistics assesses the functionality of supply chains through the optimization of resources and the refining of processes, whereas successful logistics evaluates the ability to promptly and precisely fulfill consumer demands. Through the consideration of both direct and indirect costs, logistics cost analysis assesses the financial impact of logistics operations. Logistics quality examines the reliability, security, and precision of logistical processes, whereas logistics differentiation explores the ways in which unique logistical strategies set an organization apart from its competitors. The objective of this study is to examine the intricate relationships among various performance metrics and these logistics variables. To achieve this, empirical research and statistical modeling are utilized. With the intention that they will assist managers in making more informed decisions and guide businesses toward enhancing their logistics management procedures so that they may flourish in a dynamic marketplace. In order to thrive in the contemporary global marketplace, businesses must recognize the criticality of logistics in shaping organizational results and devise strategies to capitalize on the synergies that exist between these components.

When Industry 4.0 technologies are utilized in logistics practices, they create a Logistics 4.0 environment, and the key to successfully implementing Logistics 4.0 practices is the human capital of the logistics industry. The human capital of the logistics industry was found to be classified into four major categories, namely operative, supervisor, management, and government. This study aims to develop a new human capital framework that guides the logistics industry towards successfully implementing and managing Logistics 4.0 practices. The significance of this study is to utilize a new framework to shorten the gap between current basic logistics practices into Industry 4.0 practices. An integrative literature review technique was used thoroughly and reviewed and analyzed in order to create the Logistics 4.0 human capital development framework in a manner that satisfies the categories of logistics human capital. A combination of the business logistics management (BLM) framework and Industry 4.0 elements creates a new human capital development (HCD) framework in logistics and supply chains.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a set of logistics activities for each key supply chain business process of the Global Supply Chain Forum (GSCF) model and a conceptual framework to guide their implementation. Design/methodology/approach – A literature review on supply chain management (SCM) and logistics was conducted to integrate the existing knowledge of SCM, key business processes, and logistics; the latter is critical element for the success of SCM. A set of logistics activities and a conceptual framework are presented to guide their implementation in each of the key business process of the GSCF model. Three case studies were conducted in Brazilian food companies to verify the applicability of the proposed logistics activities, their characterization, and the conceptual framework. Findings – The logistics activities, the key business processes, and the steps to their implementation are integrated into a comprehensive framework. A total of 24 logistics activities and a conceptual framework to guide their implementation for each key business process of the GSCF model were proposed focussing on competitive advantage in a supply chain environment. Originality/value – The need for and the benefits derived from the involvement of the logistics in the key business processes of SCM have been reported in the literature, but the logistics activities in these processes and the way they were implemented have not yet been identified. According to Eisenhardt and Graebner (2007), building theory from case studies is an increasingly popular and relevant research strategy that involves using one or more cases to create theoretical constructs, propositions, and/or midrange theory from case-based empirical evidence. Therefore, the research gap to be filled with this manuscript is: “How does the involvement of the logistics area in the key business processes of the GSCF model occur?” The research question of the present study is: “Which activities are performed by the logistics area in the key business processes of the GSCF model and how to implement them?”. This study bridged the research gap and answered the research question by creating a theoretical construct through a conceptual framework to guide the implementation of the logistics activities for each key business process of the GSCF model. This paper aimed to extend the existing theory since the available literature has yet not addressed this research question at all.

PurposeE-commerce last-mile logistics is undergoing dramatic changes. By inviting consumers to participate in self-collection, they collectively form a mass crowd of resources that can be integrated into last-mile logistics. However, consumers' participation may lead to a spectrum of value outcomes from value co-creation to co-destruction. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to critically examine the value formation process focussing on micro-level practices and resource outcomes.Design/methodology/approachAnchored on practice theory and resource conservation theory, content analysis is adopted to analyse 546 practice-based experiences extracted from a leading social media platform.FindingsThe analysis reveals five sequential practices of self-collection: purchasing, delivering, notifying, receiving and confirming. Furthermore, the co-created practices are characterised by gains in material, esteem, social and energy resources of the interacting actors. Meanwhile, the co-destructed practices cause a chain of resource losses, where the interacting actors suffer primary losses which subsequently triggers consumers' coping behaviours and further destroys resources for all.Research limitations/implicationsFocussing on constituent service practices, this study zooms into the value formation process. The authors contribute to logistics literature with a service-dominant logic by stressing end-consumers' involvement in the creation and consumption of last-mile logistics.Originality/valueThis study conceptualises the sources and consequences of the nuanced service practices (value formation or destruction) of self-collection. A unified framework is thus proposed, which guides logistics service providers to channel consumers towards more constructive participation in last-mile logistics.

Manufacturing companies are always competing because of globalization, both in terms of sectoral level and meeting customer demands. Companies that want to gain competitive advantages want to offer the best quality products and services at the most affordable cost and aim to deliver them to the end consumer by creating added value. This requirement and flexibility level can only be achieved through logistics applications. Businesses that provide efficiency and speed in logistics applications take a few steps forward in market conditions and respond to customer needs on time. It has become a necessity to use electronic-based systems in logistics applications, especially to meet customer requirements. Information communication-based electronic business has also changed the methods and models of doing business for its users. Internet technology has caused businesses to change their business models and practices, along with their production and service structures. Developments in e-commerce and technology have brought e-logistics applications to the forefront and made it necessary to emphasize them. Because e-logistics applications are important for facilitating business operations and increasing performance and customer satisfaction, they also eliminate distances in world trade and offer access to markets that are difficult to access. There are various problems in e-logistics applications and it is important to identify them. In this context, the problems faced by businesses using e-logistics become critical and one of the components that need to be meticulously emphasized. According to the results of the study, it is understood that the most important e-logistics barriers in enterprises are "lack of skill to manage digital technologies to support the system" and "need for qualified personnel". It is obvious that the results will guide business managers.

Purpose Delivery vulnerability is a critically important theme in logistics risk management. However, while logistics service providers often collect and retain massive amounts of logistics data, they seldom utilize such information to diagnose recurrent day-to-day logistics risks. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate delivery vulnerabilities in a logistics system using its own accumulated data. Design/methodology/approach This study utilizes pragmatic business analytics to derive insights on logistics risk management from operations data in a logistics system. Additionally, normal accident theory informs the discussion of its management implications. Findings This study’s analytical results reveal that a tightly coupled logistics system can align with normal accident theory. Specifically, the vulnerabilities of such a system comprise not only multi-components but also interactive ones. Research limitations/implications The tailored business analytics comprise a research foundation for logistics risk management. Additionally, the important research implications of this study’s analytical results arrived at via such results’ integration with normal accident theory demonstrate the value of that theory to logistics risk management. Practical implications The trade-offs between logistics risk and logistics-system efficiency should be carefully evaluated. Moreover, improvements to such systems’ internal resilience can help to alleviate potential logistics vulnerabilities. Originality/value This pioneering analytical study scrutinizes the critical vulnerability issues of a logistics service provider and therefore represents a valuable contribution to the field of logistics risk management. Moreover, it provides a guide to retrieving valuable insights from existing stockpiles of delivery-vulnerability data.

The quick development of internet technology and electronic commerce has driven the demand of internationalization of logistics services. The internationalization trend of logistics requests that local logistics system should integrate with other information systems in terms of data, business and knowledge. However, the integration among heterogeneous systems has always been the key problem to the development of internet technology. More and more information systems of the logistics enterprises become “information solitary islands”, due to the incompatibility of IT en-vironment, database format or knowledge structure. As the demand of business and technique changing, a large number of “solitary islands” are destined to be legacy systems, which causing a great waste of resources. The article employed the SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) framework and ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) technology to solve integration problems among heterogeneous systems. SOA is a software architecture theory, which based on services as components. ESB is employed to supply SOA with base architecture of message-oriented middleware in the term of in-cremental bus. However, there isn’t any integrated design method for logistics system based on SOA & ESB up to now. To fill the gap, this article presents an integrated design method through analyzing the integration environment of logistics platform, building service directory, designing system architecture and service components. The most significant results show that Firstly, this ar-ticle has presented a stratified implementation model for logistics platform to implement SOA con-cept into system model framework, so as to guide the design and development. Secondly, it also presents methods of system analysis and design with samples in following steps: service catalogue design, integral architecture design, service design, service and module depending design and ser-vice implementation design. The whole design method has been used successfully in actual project of design and development of international logistics platform. It is proved that this method can effi-ciently create integrated service logic, reduce the cost of design and development, and improve the compatibility of logistics system.

The study aims to analyse warehouse value-added services (VAS) data for a third-party logistics (3PL) service provider, which leads to identifying service improvements and cost-cutting opportunities in performing VAS for clients using Pareto analysis as a quality tool. Using a case study approach, qualitative and quantitative data were collected from a leading 3PL firm in Belgium. The approach is conducted by applying major steps of Pareto analysis. Two pharmaceutical products were analysed according to medical general classification, namely narcotic analgesics (NA) and ophthalmic antihistamines and decongestants (OAD). The results showed that the Pareto principle is proven in the NA—ticketing case, and five activities consumed 83.3 percent of the total time of VAS operations. Furthermore, in the OAD—display case, the Pareto principle is proven and six activities were validated as they accounted for 81.26 percent of the total time of primary VAS operations. The study recommended a solution to each of the four causes of delay, including lack of training/best practices, inefficient space utilization, lack of automation, and lack of cohesiveness and planning. Despite the recognized importance of avoiding warehouse operation inefficiencies, the literature lacks studies applied to practice, and few contributions exist regarding analysing 3PL service providers’ warehousing VAS operations data. This study identified all VAS activities for temperature-controlled pharmaceutical products. Moreover, the study proposes a warehouse operations improvement framework for non-automated 3PL warehouses and guides managers through Pareto analysis to cut costs and improve service level.

Abstract The process of Outsourcing Logistics Service (OLS) is deemed incipient in the management of organizations, not only because of the operational problems it presents, but also of its difficulties fitting into the company’s overall strategy. The present theoretical study, building on the resource-based view of the firm, aims to propose a framework that guides managers in developing strategies to OLS starting from the operational structure to establish the necessary resources, capabilities, and routines. In addition, taken into account is the importance of analyzing risks and resilience in the environment, concomitantly with the analysis of the operational structure. Thus, four questions were developed, aimed at leading operations managers to reflect on the development of the strategy. The framework proposed for OLS considers the supply chain management department as the main interlocutor of the strategy. This framework can be adapted according with the necessity of the contracting company, and its main intention is to enable the establishment of a project that contemplates the necessary resources, the capabilities (criteria), and the operational routines (subcriteria) for the selection of a logistics service provider in the market, one which truly addresses the needs of the organization. This framework is already intrinsic in the practical actions of the authors, because of their extensive advisory activity over the last five years in OLS to logistics service provider. In addition, it is worth mentioning that so far in the tacit applications of this framework there has been no application similar to another.

Purpose Recent literature recognizes the role of warehouses in enhancing the overall logistics performance. Thus, lean thinking has recently found its way in supporting warehouse and distribution centre operations. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships among warehouse waste reduction practices, warehouse operational performance, distribution performance and business performance. Design/methodology/approach A two-stage study was conducted. First, a Delphi technique was adopted to develop a relevant questionnaire. Second, this questionnaire was used to measure the degree of waste reduction in the different warehouse activities and to test the developed research hypotheses. The authors test the hypotheses with a sample of Middle Eastern warehouse operators. Findings There exists a positive relationship between warehouse waste reduction level and both warehouse operational performance and distribution performance. There was no direct relationship between warehouse waste reduction level and business performance. However, results revealed that the relationship between warehouse waste reduction level and business performance was mediated by warehouse operational performance and distribution performance. Practical implications The developed instrument provides a guide for logistics managers as to understand how to reduce waste in each warehousing activity. The results also inform logistics managers of how distribution performance can be improved through lean warehousing. The resulting performance improvements in the distribution operations will ultimately be reflected in the logistics performance of downstream retailers. Originality/value The study develops an original instrument for measuring waste reduction in warehouses, and provides insights into the evolving lean warehousing research area. This is the first scholarly work to uncover the relationships among warehouse waste reduction practices, warehouse operational performance, distribution performance and business performance.

Purpose – The purpose of this strengths or weaknesses, and its external opportunities or threats (SWOT) analysis study on Halal logistics industry in Malaysia is to identify SWOT in the Halal logistics environment and to uncover strategies to leverage on the strengths and opportunities and rectifying the weaknesses as well as overcoming the threats. Design/methodology/approach – This study comprises two methods: literature review and interviews. Extensive literature reviews were obtained from leading databases and the articles recorded matches or related with the keywords. In addition, the respondents from the interviews consist of middle- and top-level managers with reputable knowledge, expertise and experience in the Logistics and Halal industry. After the literature was reviewed and information was transcribed from the interviews, reduction techniques were used to group and summarize the variables into the four SWOT categories. Findings – The SWOT categories, consisting of SWOT, are generated from the literature reviews and supported by the respondents’ views and vice versa. Examples of SWOT analyses done are as follows: strength (strong government support), weakness (inconsistent Halal definition), opportunity (Muslims’ population growth) and threat (no uniformity on Halal standards). Research limitations/implications – The SWOT analysis done for this study only demonstrates the internal and external environments and not the assumption that they are certain to be correct, as they contain every imaginable matter in relation to Halal logistics. Plus, the analysis done does not show how to achieve competitive advantage, merely as a guideline and the SWOT analysis done may be outdated as the environments are constantly changing. Practical implications – The study hopes to contribute in future studies and act as a guide for the Halal logistics players to have better understanding in their business environment. Originality/value – This study is the first of its kind, to incorporate SWOT and Halal logistics. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study how a general standardized processes assessment capability/maturity model, such as Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), can be combined to a standardized benchmark of logistics processes best practices, such as FD X50-604, to propose a new approach that evaluates logistics processes capability/maturity. Design/methodology/approach – First, an analysis study of CMMI model and X50-604 standard is performed. In order to prove their coherence, a deep comparative analysis of CMMI and X50-604 practices is conducted. As illustration, the paper focuses on a particular application of this approach to evaluate capability/maturity of distribution logistics activities. An industrial case study that aims the validation of this particular application is finally conducted in a furniture company. Findings – The authors estimate that the paper findings provide an operational guide for industrials to evaluate their distribution processes that is a practical, verifiable, repeatable and extensible to other logistics process areas and an interesting opportunity to evolve the standard FD X50-604 regarding CMMI requirements to assess capability/maturity of logistics processes. Originality/value – In general, the few capability/maturity-driven models analyzed in literature present some limits that do not allow their diffusion in the industrial level, especially in logistics. This study proposes a new approach based on standards that provide an operational guide for industrials to evaluate their distribution processes based on capability/maturity concept.

Purpose Although logistics management is a crucial part of local and global sports events, there is no research-driven characterization of “sports logistics management”. The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize a framework that allows for a more structured recognition of logistics in sports, in general, and sport event management, in particular. In addition, we conduct a systematic literature review of sports logistics management and locate opportunities for future research both for sports management and logistics management scholars. Design/methodology/approach Guided by Durach et al.’s (2017) systematic literature review approach, we identify key attributes and characteristics of sports logistics management. These are based on studies featuring at least partial aspects of logistics management in sports and sport events, and that were published between 2000 and mid-2019. Findings The study reveals that sports logistics management – meaning logistics activities in sports and sport event management – is a heavily under-researched area that provides an abundance of scientific opportunities. Based on the three sport event types of local/regional sport events, major sport events and mega sport events, the authors propose four sports logistics management pillars that are central to the proposed Sport Logistics Framework: venue logistics management, sports equipment logistics management, athletes logistics management, and fan and spectators logistics management. Practical implications By providing a conceptual framework for sports logistics, the authors progress towards informing the sport sector on relevant strategic and operational levels of logistics management and set the stage for empirical studies that are likely to advance sport logistics planning and management. Originality/value This is the first study that builds on a systematic review of literature specifically focused on the logistics aspect in sports and sport event management. It provides a conceptual framework of sports logistics management and offers an agenda of future research opportunities.

Environmental issues have been critical concern among the current businesses as various business activities might pose significant threats to the environment. Incorporating environmental aspects in business operations is perceived to be able to create value and to achieve sustainable business performance. The manufacturing sector is the key contributor to the country’s high pollution index. Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices have become more prevalent in this sector in managing the environmental issues for the effectiveness of their production requirement. Nevertheless, the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) mainly are less likely to embark on environmental practices as compared to large organisations. The establishment of certified environmental management systems (EMS) is considered as a strategic management approach that defines how organisations will address their impact on the natural environment guided by ISO 14001 as a framework. This study provides empirical evidence examining the extent of GSCM practices among the SMEs through the possession of ISO 14001 and examines the impact on sustainability performance. Data were analysed using regression analyses. Results indicate that GSCM practices have a significant positive relation with sustainability performance. Eco-design practices and environmental cooperation have a positive relationship with sustainability performance. There is no relationship between green purchasing and reverse logistics practices with sustainability performance. These results imply that Malaysian SMEs adopt GSCM practices mostly through eco-design and robust cooperation among departments in dealing with environmental issues. Green practices and reverse logistics practices are still new for SMEs and do not contribute to achieving better performance.

Nowadays, our society has undergone a change in the viewpoint of production and manufacturing, and will pay more attention to the needs of the majority of users, and gradually began to make demand-oriented research topics for the development of the times. Logistics platform is also under such a trend, pay more attention to user needs and experience. As the business focus of logistics platforms, how to cultivate user stickiness and continuously cultivate new users and retain old users under the competitive market situation has become a major problem for enterprises. Around these issues, this paper conducts a systematic and in-depth study. Based on the S-O-R theory, this paper uses the stimulus-organism-response model to answer the question of how to continuously improve the participation and willingness of platform users by finding factors that affect the stickiness of logistics platform users. Systematic analysis and process research of logistics platform-related literature guided by the research question identifies four factors that influence logistics platform user stickiness, namely platform gu-enterprise interaction, platform atmosphere cues, user fit and consumer trust, and includes platform network effect as a moderating variable in the research framework. Through the empirical study, the following conclusions were drawn: platform gu-enterprise interaction has a significant effect on user fit, platform atmosphere cues have a significant effect on consumer trust, and user fit and consumer trust have a significant effect on user stickiness. User fit mediates the influence of information request, switching cost, and personnel communication on platform user stickiness, and consumer trust mediates the influence of platform reputation, personalized recommendation, and service remediation on platform user stickiness. Finally, certain management suggestions and research limitation outlooks are given to managers of logistics platforms.

With the continuous development of global trade in recent years, business English has received more and more attention as a medium of communication. Business English is a branch of English, and in order to meet the practical needs in business, business English is involved in various business disciplines from foreign trade to international logistics, to economics, foreign trade correspondence, law, and so on, which need to be translated in a more targeted manner. Therefore, there are many professional tutorials for business English in the market to guide trade personnel in business English translation. Many scholars have also conducted comprehensive studies on business English translation, some starting from its stylistic features and some focusing on translation skills, but fewer scholars have conducted studies on business English translation through models, and there is still a lack of theoretical basis for how to effectively improve the translation of business English. Therefore, in order to reduce the friction between different cultures in trade, promote business English better, and provide convenience for foreign traders, this study will implement the basic principles of “faithfulness, elegance” in English translation, with the aim of improving the practicality and effectiveness of business English, mainly from the main features of business English translation, and then, in the process of analysis, we mainly use the logistic model to analyze the characteristics of business English translation, including timeliness, professionalism, uniqueness, and diversity. The final analysis results show that the influence of professionalism and diversity on the effect of business English translation is more obvious, and we need to carry out a special teaching mode for these two points. The final analysis shows that professionalism and diversity have a significant impact on the effectiveness of business English translation, and special teaching models are needed to optimize these two points.

Purpose Blockchain technology offers a lot of potential benefits in supply chain management. However, there is a need of a reference model which addresses the gaps in existing frameworks. This paper aims to propose a blockchain technology-based reference model which can be applied to global logistics operations. Design/methodology/approach The researchers have integrated the fit-for-purpose theoretical framework and prototyping methodology to design the reference model, a blockchain-based logistics, tracking and traceability system (BLTTS). The researchers demonstrated the application of the reference model through a health-care supply chain case study. The proposed BLTTS can be implemented across global logistics operations for business performance improvement. Findings The research provides a framework and recommendations for global companies to consider when adopting the blockchain technology for implementation. The researchers found that the Ethereum blockchain technology improves security of the data shared within the block through the secure hashing algorithm 1. The hash algorithm ensures anonymity of the involved parties. The model integrates blockchain with supply chain thus creating transparent process, efficiency and real-time communication. Research limitations/implications The reference model will offer a better solution to global logistics operations challenges. It provides recommendations to key stakeholders involved in logistics operations segment of the logistics industry while adopting blockchain technology. Apart from the methodological limitation of the study, the system compatibility and the layer configuration aspects might be posing potential challenges while upscaling the implementation. Originality/value The proposed reference model overcomes the drawbacks of existing models as it integrates Ethereum technology. In addition, the researchers have applied the model to demonstrate its functioning in real-time environment, which could guide for future research.

The aim of this research is to identify the factors that influence the implementation of supply chain management (SCM) strategy in Latin America countries. More specifically, we focus on the study of the degree of SCM strategy involvement into the design of business strategy through the analysis of the following aspects: organization culture, incentive programs for managers, internal alignment, and segmentation. These aspects are evaluated at a firm level of analysis in order to understand how the internal organization gives way to a correct SCM implementation. The authors use a Delphi Methodology on a panel of 13 Latin American experts in SCM and logistics in order to validate a set of SCM constructs that represent different aspects of integration and that should be presented as SCM strategy aspects in the definition of the business strategy of the firm. As a result, the differences in the experts’ opinions regarding the proposed constructs clearly indicate that even the constructs have to be included into the SCM strategy, there is still much to be defined in terms of SCM strategy and how SCM participates in the Business Strategy and, thus clear guidelines must be proposed to enable its proper operationalization. To deepen the phenomenon of SCM as a fundamental part of the strategy of the company and thus analyze in detail the conditions that must be taken within the organization for its further operationalization are a still pending innovative approach in the matter. This study permits to develop a useful framework as a guide to involve SCM strategy into business strategy.

The surging demand for logistics systems brought about by the vigorous development of e-commerce makes urban traffic more and more congested. The need for a sustainable transition in terms of urban transportation infrastructure also encourages the further innovation of logistics systems. The urban underground logistics system (ULS) emerges as a promising alternative for realizing efficient large-scale freight distribution in megacities. However, there are relatively few studies that have explored the factors that determine the uptake of ULSs in practice. This paper thus aims to identify the critical success factors of ULSs throughout project life cycle stages. Firstly, a desktop study and a study using the Delphi method were conducted to extract the critical success factors (CSFs) of ULS projects. Secondly, a questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data on the perceived significance of the selected success factors from ULS professionals. Thirdly, the intergroup comparison of the significance of CSFs and exploratory factory analysis were used to ascertain the critical factors and latent determinants influencing the development of ULS projects. In total, 36 CSFs in the four life cycle stages of ULS projects were finalized. The identified factors represent the seven latent determinants in developing a ULS project, namely, overall feasibility and acceptance of the ULS, prototype system, and business model, competence and resources for ULS construction and operation, station layout and intermodal transportation, government policies and incentives, long-term planning of the underground space and logistics network, and market investigation and forecasting. The research findings of the paper help guide practitioners and policy makers on decisions made during ULS planning and construction and provide a reference performance evaluation framework for ULS projects.

In the face of climate change (CC), “business as usual” is futile. The increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events (e.g., hurricanes, floods, droughts, and heatwaves) have hurt lives, displaced communities, destroyed logistics networks, disrupted the flow of goods and services, and caused delays, capacity failures, and immense costs. This study presents a strategic approach we term “Climate-Change Resilient, Sustainable Supply Chain Risk Management” (CCR-SSCRM) to address CC risks in supply chain management (SCM) pervading today’s business world. This approach ensures supply chain sustainability by balancing the quadruple bottom line pillars of economy, environment, society, and culture. A sustainable supply chain analytics perspective was employed to support these goals, along with a systematic literature network analysis of 699 publications (2003–2022) from the SCOPUS database. The analysis revealed a growing interest in CC and supply chain risk management, emphasizing the need for CCR-SSCRM as a theoretical guiding framework. The findings and recommendations may help to guide researchers, policymakers, and businesses. We provide insights on constructing and managing sustainable SCs that account for the accelerating impacts of CC, emphasizing the importance of a proactive and comprehensive approach to supply chain risk management in the face of CC. We then offer directions for future research on CCR-SSCRM and conclude by underlining the urgency of interdisciplinary collaboration and integration of climate considerations into SCM for enhanced resilience and sustainability.

One of the biggest challenges today is to make traditional systems more sustainable. Physical Internet (PI, π) based logistics systems provide one of the most defining solutions. In our opinion, it is worthwhile to deal with the intralogistics conversion of the Physical Internet because traditional systems can no longer operate with sufficient efficiency to meet growing customer expectations and demands. This research focuses on restructuring a factory from its traditional operating to a PI-based system using our previously defined intralogistics components. The article surveys the possibility of creating PI-hub and virtual PI-hub in a factory process. The warehouses were converted to PI-hubs, and virtual PI-hubs were placed near the two manufacturing to create a more flexible structure. We created a simulation study in AnyLogic where we examine the efficiency achievable by automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in a PI-based system. The results were compared based on the traditional and PI-based systems. Based on the simulation the inefficiency of the PI-based system is lower (by ~18%) at higher control event values. This allows achieving a more efficient, flexible, sustainable, and balanced operation.

We investigate the stakeholders’ role in a business failure situation. In particular, we analyse which primary stakeholders have an impact on the business failure, and how. This work also proposes an order of prioritization of primary stakeholders with the purpose of showing business managers useful information which guides their decisions to reduce the emergence of conflicts of interest that may affect the sustainability of firms long-term in financial crisis situations. We have taken a sample of 2,352 Spanish SMEs, 1,176 non-failed firms matched with 1,176 failed firms, from which economic and financial data are been extracted from their financial reporting. In this vein, logistic regression and boosting methodologies have been applied. The findings indicate that the primary stakeholders have a statistically significant effect on the likelihood of business failure. Furthermore, the results present a ranking of primary stakeholders related to their impact on the likelihood of business failure in contexts of financial crisis. Thus, our study provides a useful guide to managers seeking to understand the primary stakeholders’ roles and their relative priority in business failure.

CONTEXT–Simulation modelling provides insight into hidden dynamics underlying business processes. However, an accurate understanding of operations is necessary for fidelity of the model. This is challenging because of the need to extract the tacit nature of operational knowledge and facilitate the representation of complex processes and decision-making patterns that do not depend on classes, objects, and instantiations. Commonly used industrial simulation, such as Arena®, does not natively support the object-oriented constructs available for software development. OBJECTIVE–This paper proposes a method for developing simulation models that allow process-owners and modellers to jointly build a series of evolutionary models that improve conceptual validity of the executable computer model. APPROACH-Software and Systems Engineering principles were adapted to develop a framework that allows a systematic transition from conceptual to executable model, which allows multiple perspectives to be simultaneously considered. The framework was applied to a logistics case study in a bulk commodities distribution context. FINDINGS–The method guided the development of a set of models that served as scaffolds to allow the natural flow of ideas from a natural language domain to Arena® code. In doing so, modeller and process-owners at strategic, tactical, and operational levels developed and validated the simulation model. ORIGINALITY—This work provides a framework for structuring the development of simulation models. The framework allows the use of non-object-oriented constructs, making it applicable to SIMAN-based simulation languages and packages as Arena®.

PurposeData envelopment analysis (DEA) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) are two widely applied methods to evaluate and rank suppliers in terms of sustainability. In this study, to investigate the extent to which potential differences in the outcomes of these two methods influence the benchmarking strategies, a comparative analysis based on a common set of data gathered from 19 logistics service providers is implemented.Design/methodology/approachAs suppliers' sustainability cannot be improved in a single-step process due to several limitations, improvement needs to proceed gradually. Therefore, using the self-organising map method, the suppliers were classified into clusters within a novel framework for gradually improving their sustainability. Then, the two processes of gradual improvement based on the outcomes of DEA and AHP were compared.FindingsThe findings show that although the rankings of suppliers guided by the methods correlated to a high degree, the benchmarking strategies provided by the methods for gradually improving the sustainability of suppliers differed considerably. In particular, whereas AHP suggests a benchmarking policy better suited for unsustainable or less sustainable suppliers with limited access to resources, DEA proposes one for suppliers able to dramatically boost their sustainability with few quick, significant leaps in performance.Originality/valueFirst, this study revealed a novel gradual improvement framework using the self-organising map method. Second, it clarified the extent to which the benchmarking policies are influenced by the type of evaluation method.

Purpose Big data poses as a valuable opportunity to further improve decision making in supply chain management (SCM). However, the understanding and application of big data seem rather elusive and only partially explored. The purpose of this paper is to create further guidance in understanding big data and to explore applications from a business process perspective. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on a sequential mixed-method. First, a Delphi study was designed to gain insights regarding the terminology of big data and to identify and rank applications of big data in SCM using an adjusted supply chain operations reference (SCOR) process framework. This was followed by a questionnaire-survey among supply chain executives to elucidate the Delphi study findings and to assess the practical use of big data. Findings First, big data terminology seems to be more about data collection than of data management and data utilization. Second, the application of big data is most applicable for logistics, service and planning processes than of sourcing, manufacturing and return. Third, supply chain executives seem to have a slow adoption of big data. Research limitations/implications The Delphi study is explorative by nature and the questionnaire-survey rather small in scale; therefore, findings have limited generalizability. Practical implications The findings can help supply chain managers gain a clearer understanding of the domain of big data and guide them in where to deploy big data initiatives. Originality/value This study is the first to assess big data in the SCOR process framework and to rank applications of big data as a mean to guide the SCM community to where big data is most beneficial.

This research examines the relevance and context of postgraduate programs offered by the University of Panama, specifically focusing on the “Master’s Program in Maritime Industries with an Emphasis on Port Management, Multimodal Transportation, and Logistics” offered by the Institute of the Canal and International Studies. The study employs Guillermo Briones’ specific reference model and adapts the “Evaluation Guide for Postgraduate Programs” from the IberoAmerican University Postgraduate Association (AUIP). The analysis centers on three dimensions: Academic, linkage, and geographical-political. The results reveal a robust academic relationship between undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with high approval rates from coordinators (66.7%) and students (60%). Regarding linkage, the program demonstrates significant engagement with the business-productive sector, as 40% of respondents indicated. It also exhibits a favorable consideration of international trade rules, with 100% of coordinators affirming that program content incorporates international trade treaties. Furthermore, program graduates reported working in fields related to their education, with more definitive and positive responses than coordinators. This suggests a potential lack of data and ongoing connection between graduates and the institution that provided the program.

The increase in unemployment rates at the international level, as a consequence of the deep financial crisis of the beginning of the 21st century, has caused the labor market to become increasingly restricted, complicating the insertion of a population of productive age. In addition, the lack of employment has exacerbated a series of social problems, including poverty, insecurity, undernourishment, among others, in a large part of Latin America. Therefore, the impulse of social enterprises can contribute to the creation of jobs and combat this problem, generating wellbeing not only within a region but also in others with similar situations, generating an area of opportunity for those social enterprises with an export profile. Based on the above, this paper begins with a documentary research process of specialized literature on social business and later analyzes a group of students' perception on the impact that this model can produce, as well as the limitations for its implementation, through an exploratory and descriptive study, guided by the qualitative approach since a questionnaire of open questions about these topics was used as a research instrument. The answers were analyzed in such a way that similarities and differences could be detected among students' perception. Results shown that the main benefits are the creation of direct jobs in the country of origin and indirect in other markets as well as the emergence of productive chains while among the constraints include ignorance of the export logistics process and tariff rates. Finally, a series of recommendations are proposed in order to strengthen the dissemination of this business model.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to collectively measure and compare the efficiency of Brazilian and American soybean transport corridors, from farmers to export ports, using the data envelopment analysis (DEA). Design/methodology/approach This paper aims to determine routes from main producing micro-regions to main export ports, specifically using slack-based measure and variables that represent the three pillars of sustainability (economic, social, and environmental). The choice of variables was guided by literature review and analyzed through the principal component analysis. After the application of the model, the quantitative tiebreaking method of the composite index is applied. Findings The findings are coherent with a global report that compares soybean transportation in both countries (Brazil and USA). Efficient routes and corridors tend to present short distance truck trips and long distance train or barge trips. The efficiency of the inland waterway trips depends on how many barges are used in the same expedition. Routes with more than three modes tend to be inefficient which suggest that there is a limit for multimodality. Originality/value Corridor benchmarking is a rare topic in the literature and previous works normally focus on some specific and limited corridor performance characteristics, such as cost. The main contribution of this research is that it expands the discussion regarding corridor benchmarking and it focuses on efficiency as a whole. The paper also proposes a method that can be applied in different logistics contexts, like expanding the study to different countries. More specifically, this method could be used in infrastructure investments programs.
