Davidsson, Louise, und Sara Thulin. „The Legal Status of Domain Names : A Business Context“. Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Commercial Law, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-1089.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:

Domain names are still a relatively unknown occurrence and despite being a natural part in

most people’s every-day life, there are few who reflect over their importance. The original

function of domain names was merely to serve as technical addresses and to facilitate the

locating of websites on the Internet. Today domain names are much more than this. In

addition to the address function, domain names may also serve as indications of goods,

services, businesses or information. The domain name is usually the first contact one gets

with a website and it has become crucial for businesses to have their company name or

trade marks registered as domain names. The issue of the legal status of domain names has

mainly been discussed from an American point of view and in Sweden this discussion has

almost entirely fallen under the radar. If the legal status of a domain name were clear, it

would be easier for businesses to avail themselves of the value of that domain name. It

would possibly even contribute to strengthening the legal protection for the domain name

holder, in for example insolvency or bankruptcy procedures.

Intellectual property exists in many different forms, the main being patents, trade marks,

copyright and design rights. Although there are many differences between them, they all

have in common that they establish property protection over intangibles such as ideas,

inventions, signs and information. As a domain name is not a physical object, there can be

no doubt that it is an intangible. The question is whether it is property. Intellectual

property is not a static area and it can, in line with societal and technological development,

be expanded to include new types.

The legal status of domain names is generally discussed in the light of the close connection

they have with trade marks. Except from their original function, the trade mark function of

domain names can probably be considered as one of the most commonly accepted. It is

indicated in this thesis that that function contributes to that a domain name can be

considered as a distinctive sign and thereby obtain protection, in the same way as an

unregistered trade mark.

According to current accounting rules, businesses may, to some extent, avail themselves of

the value of a domain name. Domain names are under certain circumstances identified as

intangible assets and even as ‘similar rights’ to for example trade marks and patents in

accounting and taxation situations.

At this time it is not possible to legislate on the area of the legal status of a domain name

on a Community level, as this most likely would have to include a consideration of the

existence of property rights and consequently fall outside the legislative powers of the

Community.

Both the legal development and the legal discussions on the topic of the legal status of

domain names in Sweden have been relatively sparse. Nonetheless, there have been some

interesting opinions.

By investigating what positions the different authorities, academics and practitioners have

taken on the legal status of domain names it can be concluded that the prevailing opinion

in Sweden is that domain names are not considered as property. The reason for this seems

to be that domain names as such, are in fact no more than technical constructions and that

by registering a domain name the registrant only becomes the holder of a contractual right.

However, there are some diverging opinions which could suggest that the legal status of

domain names in Sweden is not yet settled. The aspects which are then taken into

consideration include that domain names have developed to become important and

valuable assets for an increasing number of businesses. A domain name is a precondition

for the creation of a website and therefore of crucial importance for, in particular, online

based businesses. However, they are of increasing importance for all businesses to reach

out to and compete over the same customers.

It is advocated that the fact that domain names are freely traded with indicates that domain

names are property. It has also been questioned whether an asset with a true economic

value, such as a domain name, can exist without being considered as an item of property.

The steps taken in other jurisdictions have shown that the legal status of domain names is

not even clear in some of the countries with the greatest experience of domain names.

Nonetheless, the legal status is given attention in those countries and the discussion has

been initiated. In general, it can be concluded that the development seems to go toward

higher awareness of the value of domain names.

Milashevich, Anna. „Re-visioning business : archetypal patterns in the business domain and their relation to the concept of business creativity“. Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/21358/.

Annotation:
The principal aim of the thesis is to re-vision what I am calling ‘the business domain’ by showing how different archetypal energies of the collective unconscious operate in it and how they structure the domain’s creative dynamics. In this task, I am drawing on a range of Jungian theories. While the psychoanalytic organisational approach, with its focus on the personal/group unconscious, is well developed, the Jungian organisational approach is in its infancy with the result that little is said in the relevant literature to date about collective unconscious dominants, the archetypes. The introduction of this perspective involves arguing against the prevailing psychoanalytic emphasis on the pathological aspects of the business domain. The key value of the archetypal approach is that it exposes the inherent tensions within business life. In addition, it adds a much-needed catalyst for bringing insight into creativity and innovation as they manifest in the business domain. Jungian psychology, as I argue, offers a perspective that is instructive for grasping the complexities of creativity in business, which differs from manifestations of creativity in other domains such as the arts and sciences. Jungian psychology could thus make a valuable contribution to the analysis of business dynamics. I will also demonstrate how the archetypal approach can be helpful in containing the unconscious projected contents (both personal and collective) inherent in the business domain. As a first step in delineating the value and scope of an archetypal understanding of the dynamics in the business domain, this thesis invites further consideration of the question about how this approach can be used to construct a theoretical framework for analysing the business domain and what this framework could look like.

Resources Events Agents (REA) ontology is a profound business modeling ontology that was developed to define the architecture of accounting information systems. Nevertheless, REA did not manage to get the same attention as other business modeling ontologies. One reason of such abandon is the absence of a meaningful visual notation for the ontology, which has resulted in an abstruse ontology to non-academic audience. Another reason for this abandon is the fact that REA does not have a standard formal representation. This has resulted in a humble amount of researches which have focused on defining meta-models of the ontology while neglecting the wider purpose of REA-based information systems development. Consequently, the ontology was deviated away from its original purpose, and rather used in business schools. To solve the aforementioned issues, this research presents a Model Driven Development (MDD) technique in the form of a REA-based Domain Specific Visual Language (DSVL) that is implemented within a modeling and code generation editor. This effort was taken in order to answer the question of “How would a REA-DSVL based tool make the REA ontology implementable in the domain of information systems development?” In order to answer the research question, a design science methodology (DSRM) was implemented as the structure of this research. The DSRM was chosen because this research aims to develop three main artifacts. These are; a meta-model of REA, a visual notation of REA, and a REA-DSVL-based modeling and code generation tool. The first phase of the DSRM was to identify the problems which were mentioned earlier, followed by the requirements identification phase which drew the outline of the; meta-model, the visual notation, and the tool. After that, the development phase was conducted in order to develop the aforementioned artifacts. The editor was then demonstrated using a case study of a local company in Stockholm-Sweden. Finally, the resulted artifacts were evaluated based on the collected requirements and the results from the case study. Based on the analyses of the artifacts and the case study, this research was concluded with the result that a REA-based DSVL tool can help in boosting the planning and analysis phases of the software development lifecycle (SDLC). This is achieved by automating some of the conventional software planning and design tasks, which would lead to more accurate systems’ designs; thus, minimizing the time of the planning and design phases. And it can be achieved by abstracting the direct logic of REA through providing functionalities that help users from different backgrounds (academic and professional) to embrace a business modeling editor rather than an ontology; thus, attracting a wider users base for implementing REA.

The first timeshare resorts were created in the 1960s. Since then, the concept of vacation timesharing has spread around the world. Despite significant growth in the last 30 years, little academic research exists concerning the competencies required to manage timeshare resorts. This study provides new perspective on competency domain clusters within the timeshare industry. Three hundred thirty one property-level timeshare managers were asked to rate the importance and frequency of use of each competency domain cluster. The data gathered from the survey reveals a relationship between the types of resort a manager manages and the importance and frequency ratings of each competency's domain cluster. Further, a surprising result was the discovery of a lack of industry certification among the respondents. These results may be useful in training and development strategies for timeshare resort managers.

Today, millions of purchased domain sites names are sitting unused with no real web designs or concrete purpose coupled with them. Why would not owners engage a web-hosting domain-parking hotel so they can earn money through eyeballs advertising or click revenue while their sites sits unused? Parking hotels claim access to passive domain monetization through advertising programs tailored to generate revenue via automatic web page generations containing tailored advertisement. When visitors access these web sites, revenue is generated for domain owners. This study sought to investigate if parking hotels’ advertising claim, that you can make money through them, carries substance. Hence, is it possible to generate sufficient revenue using a parking hotel’s advertising revenue model to pay for the cost of domain ownership and, if possible, generate excess revenue? The study’s epistemological approach, trying to distinguish the truth about the hotels’ claims, stems from a ontological discussion around web hosting hotels’ advertising vehicle existence and its ability to generates revenue. The study challenged a parking hotel’s claim through an inductive quantitative approach by watching advertising revenue for 59 domain names over 105 days. Quantitative data concluded, through a statistical approach, that there were insufficient advertising income, approximately a nickel, to cover the annual cost of approximately $6 USD. Therefore, the study concluded that the advertising claims were misleading and recommends that sites are not purchased, or renew, for the purpose of making money through web hotels’ advertising models.

Aldin, Laden. „Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns“. Thesis, Brunel University, 2010. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/4635.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
In modern organisations business process modelling has become fundamental due to the increasing rate of organisational change. As a consequence, an organisation needs to continuously redesign its business processes on a regular basis. One major problem associated with the way business process modelling (BPM) is carried out today is the lack of explicit and systematic reuse of previously developed models. Enabling the reuse of previously modelled behaviour can have a beneficial impact on the quality and efficiency of the overall information systems development process and also improve the effectiveness of an organisation’s business processes. In related disciplines, like software engineering, patterns have emerged as a widely accepted architectural mechanism for reusing solutions. In business process modelling the use of patterns is quite limited apart from few sporadic attempts proposed by the literature. Thus, pattern-based BPM is not commonplace. Business process patterns should ideally be discovered from the empirical analysis of organisational processes. Empiricism is currently not the basis for the discovery of patterns for business process modelling and no systematic methodology for collecting and analysing process models of business organisations currently exists. The purpose of the presented research project is to develop a methodological framework for achieving reuse in BPM via the discovery and adoption of patterns. The framework is called Semantic Discovery and Reuse of Business Process Patterns (SDR). SDR provides a systematic method for identifying patterns among organisational data assets representing business behaviour. The framework adopts ontologies (i.e., formalised conceptual models of real-world domains) in order to facilitate such discovery. The research has also produced an ontology of business processes that provides the underlying semantic definitions of processes and their constituent parts. The use of ontologies to model business processes represents a novel approach and combines advances achieved by the Semantic Web and BPM communities. The methodological framework also relates to a new line of research in BPM on declarative business processes in which the models specify what should be done rather than how to ‘prescriptively’ do it. The research follows a design science method for designing and evaluating SDR. Evaluation is carried out using real world sources and reuse scenarios taken from both the financial and educational domains.

Ong, Thian-Huat. „Language- and domain-independent knowledge maps: A statistical phrase indexing approach“. Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290042.

Annotation:
Global economy increases the need for multilingual systems, while each domain has a large repository of knowledge, particularly explicit knowledge usually captured in text. The speed of textual information being produced has exceeded the speed at which a person can process the information, so an automated approach to alleviate the information overload problem is needed. Unlike structured data in databases, unstructured text cannot be readily understood and processed by computers. This dissertation aims to create a language- and domain-independent approach to automatically generating hierarchical knowledge maps that enable the users to browse and understand the concepts hidden in the underlying knowledge sources. A system development research methodology was adopted to build and evaluate prototype systems to study the research questions. In order to process textual knowledge, a statistical phrase indexing algorithm was proposed and applied to the Chinese language. Next, the algorithm was extended to be able to process multiple languages and domains. Lastly, the results of the algorithm was further applied to a case study using the dissertation's proposed automated framework for generating hierarchical knowledge maps in Chinese news collection. This dissertation has two main contributions. First, it demonstrated that an automated approach is effective in creating knowledge maps for users to browse the underlying knowledge. The approach combines statistical phrase extraction algorithm for representing textual knowledge and neural networks for clustering related concepts and visualization. Second, it provided a set of language- and domain-independent tools to extract phrases from a textual knowledge in order to support text mining applications.

This research examines WHY and HOW a new approach to Enterprise Strategy and IT planning can be adopted in the European national financial sector by using Enterprise Architecture (EA). EA has been promoted as a key tool for transformation and modernisation of the enterprise. By following best practices from successful case studies and the European Central Bank (ECB), the claim is that the adoption of EA will ensure that IT resources and business processes are planned, leveraged, and coordinated better in national financial sectors. In our five supporting papers, several qualitative case studies in Europe were investigated by applying an interpretive perspective. According to common belief EA connects business and IT; it is an important tool for survival and growth. Many EA endeavours, however, fail. The question is how can risks of EA implementation failure be reduced at an early stage? Underlying questions concern: why would a particular organisation need EA, can implementation risks be identified and are solutions available to reduce the failure rate? In order to answer research questions a literature study is performed to build the Business Transformation Enablement Program framework (BTEP). It advocates deliberate motivation, active risk management and an iterative and incremental implementation of EA. Next to the literature, the framework is validated through the Small National Bank (SNB) implementation. Data was collected in both structured, semi-structured and ad-hoc methods. Grounded theory techniques were used to analyse the data logically, using existing theory only as prior constructs. The theoretical abstractions, generalisations and experience generated in the research process have been published and availed to specialised groups.

Annotation:
This thesis is about grounding an increasingly common practice in an established theory where no explicit theory currently exists. The common practice that is the subject of this study is information security. It is commonly held that information security means maintaining the confidentiality, integrity (accuracy) and availability of information. It seems that a whole industry has built up with tools, techniques and consultants to help organisations achieve a successful information security practice. There is even a British Standard containing around 130 controls, and a management system to guide organisations and practitioners. In the absence of many alternatives this British Standard has grown into something of a requirement for organisations who are concerned about the security of their information. The British Standard was developed almost entirely through the collaboration of some powerful blue-chip organisations. These organisations compared their practices and found some key areas of commonality. These common areas became the foundation of many information security practices today. Although there has been considerable evolutionary change the fundamentals, and not least the principles of confidentiality, integrity and availability, remain largely the same. It is argued in this thesis that the absence of a theoretical grounding has left the domain as weak and unable to cope with the rapidly developing area of information security. It is also argued that there was far too little consideration of human issues when the standard was devised and that situation has worsened recently with greater reliance on information security driven by more threats of increasing complexity, and more restrictive controls being implemented to counteract those threats. This thesis aims to pull human issues into the domain of information security: a domain which is currently dominated by non-social and practical paradigms. The key contribution of this thesis is therefore to provide a new model around which information security practices can be evaluated. This new model has a strong and established theoretical basis. The theory selected to underpin the new model is in the broad domain of critical social theory.

Annotation:
This thesis explores the intellectual social and collaborative nature of the domain of entrepreneurship in two related ways. First it uses bibliometric techniques to investigate the constitution of entrepreneurship. Specifically, author co-citation analysis establishes a collective view of the structure of the entrepreneurship literature - as perceived by its research active members. The co-citation frequencies of 78 prominent entrepreneurship researchers were analyzed using multivariate techniques. Cluster Analysis and Multidimensional Scaling were used to explore the intellectual structure of entrepreneurship research by identifying groups of scholars whose work falls into similar areas. Factor Analysis was then used to identify the underlying themes that characterize the domain. Second, the scholars within these nominal groupings were approached using individualiozed questionnaires to explore what social interactions might parallel, reflect or underpin the intellectual ones. The research is original in its contribution as this is the first time the technique of author co-citation analysis has been applied in the domain of entrepreneurship. To apply author co-citation analysis ito a relatively immature, emerging domain of study is, in itself, original and tests the technique in a new and experimental way. Additionally, the use of qualitative data - based on the results of the author co-citation analytis - validates and yields further insight into the initial results thus advancing the terchnique in the bibliometrics domain. The study demonstrates that there are real and robust social and collaborative networkd underlying the generation of the intellectual work which is cited jointly, by third parties. The latter authors may be unaware of these networks. Equally, the co-cited authors, while recognizing overlapping interests, may have difficulty in categorizing this commonality in their contributions. Entrepreneurship research is shown to be very much a social activity. As a whole, the thesis offers a novel insight into the nature of entrepreneurship derived from the domain's citing population.

Herbert, Margaret E. „The perceived nature and function of planning by domain-related experts: Academic, business, lay, and teacher“. Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/9867.

Annotation:
It is the underlying postulate of the present research that planning is a skill which enjoys a common mental representation and vocabulary across groups in society. Should this be the case, it may be beneficial to focus instruction on planning, as a vehicle for teaching and operationalizing metacognitive skills. Exploration of this postulate necessitates a fuller understanding of how both the nature and the function of planning are perceived by various representative groups. A deeper awareness of planning knowledge held by domain-related experts has potential to reveal similarities and dissimilarities of mental representations of planning. Toward this end, four groups of experts in academics from cognitive science, business, everyday life-planning, and teaching were provided with input from a telephone survey of the general public through a Delphi Methodology. The reiterative, three round process was undertaken by the participants to explore what is meant by the term planning, how it is done, and where and when it is used. This self-correcting technique permitted each group to generate an excellent and precise definition of planning, to clearly define the terminology used, and to articulate the functions of planning and their contextual applications. The Delphi Method achieved unusually high degrees of agreement both within and across cells as to the nature and function of planning. Additional comments from respondents brought elaboration of their perceptions to light for the purposes of understanding and comparison. There was a remarkable correspondence between the most recent literature on planning and the knowledge base of the respondents. The data confirm that there is a striking convergence, within and across the sampled groups about what planning is and the purposes for which it is used. For all cells, definitions of planning achieved a solid consensus and an impressive 97% agreement on all components of the definition and their descriptors, 89% on the function statements, and 95% for the 159 function descriptors. The analysis of data highlighted areas of similarity and dissimilarity of perceptions on aspects of planning. Cell differences between the Academic, Business, Lay, and Teacher cells were observed and reported. The findings substantiate the proposed use of planning and its vocabulary to assist learners to discuss, comprehend, and employ the underlying metacognitive thinking skills involved for problem solving in school and in real life situations throughout the life span. This valuable connector between ages and contexts has been under-utilized to date. The results of the present study justify planning as an umbrella process for instruction in metacognition. Because of the immense importance of professional competencies the measurement and modeling thereof has been become an important research field. In light of the (re)structuring of competence-oriented study programs, this importance can especially be expanded to the field of tertiary education. For this reason, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research funded the research initiative "competency modeling and measurement in higher education” („Kompetenzmodellierung und Kompetenzerfassung im Hochschulsektor"; KoKoHS) in 2011. The presented joint research project (University of Frankfurt, University of Mannheim, and Technical University Darmstadt) "Modelling and Measurement of Content Knowledge and Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Business and Economic Education“ ("Modellierung und Erfassung fachwissenschaftlicher und fachdidaktischer Kompetenzen im wirtschaftspädagogischen Studium"; KoMeWP) was a part of this research initiative and focuses on the issue of examining competencies in German (n =1,158) and Austrian (n =249) business education students. The overall objective of this project was to establish a theoretical definition of the competence of prospective business and economics teachers, develop a corresponding competence structure model, and empirically support the model in terms of psychometric quality. Thus, the foundation of this PhD thesis is a conception of competence, in which competence comprises the aspects of professional knowledge (facets: knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge), self-regulation, and teaching-learningprocess-related beliefs. The prerequisite for testing the model was to first examine the included instruments individually. Initially in study 1, the instrument for measuring professional knowledge was investigated. The most important finding is the underpinning of the two-dimensional structure of professional knowledge and thus, be connected to important international research findings. Furthermore, the results indicate that the instrument has satisfactory reliabilities (content knowledge: .64; pedagogical content knowledge: .64) and good psychometric quality. In summary, the developed instrument allows one to measure in detail the professional knowledge of prospective business educators in the field of accounting/bookkeeping. In the second step, the framework conditions of professional knowledge acquisition interested. Thus, in study 2 the role of additional university course offerings (in addition to the compulsory courses), completed internships, vocational training with relevant professional reference, and attending a commercial school was examined. It turned out, that the influence of additional university offerings plays a relatively minor role. In contrast, significant influences of non-university learning opportunities (especially commercial training) on the facets of professional knowledge were found. Study 3 examined whether the previously mentioned theoretically modeled competence structure could be confirmed empirically. During these investigations, the individual instruments for measuring beliefs (self-developed) and self-regulation (adapted; Schmidt, 2009), were (re)analyzed. This resulted in suitable, high quality instruments to measure these aspects of professional competence. Overall, the results showed good model fit indices. In addition, the learning opportunities mentioned in study 2 were included in the model. Similar to the results of study 2, it was found that non-academic learning opportunities have a higher influence in terms of knowledge acquisition than taking additional university courses. It can be stated that in the context of the joint project and this thesis it has been possible, to make an important and significant contribution with satisfactory results to the very latest research field of modelling and measuring competencies.

Welcker, Laura Joana Maria. „The impact of domain knowledge-driven variable derivation on classifier performance for corporate data mining“. Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/5009.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The technological progress in terms of increasing computational power and growing virtual space to collect data offers great potential for businesses to benefit from data mining applications. Data mining can create a competitive advantage for corporations by discovering business relevant information, such as patterns, relationships, and rules. The role of the human user within the data mining process is crucial, which is why the research area of domain knowledge becomes increasingly important. This thesis investigates the impact of domain knowledge-driven variable derivation on classifier performance for corporate data mining. Domain knowledge is defined as methodological, data and business know-how. The thesis investigates the topic from a new perspective by shifting the focus from a one-sided approach, namely a purely analytic or purely theoretical approach towards a target group-oriented (researcher and practitioner) approach which puts the methodological aspect by means of a scientific guideline in the centre of the research. In order to ensure feasibility and practical relevance of the guideline, it is adapted and applied to the requirements of a practical business case. Thus, the thesis examines the topic from both perspectives, a theoretical and practical perspective. Therewith, it overcomes the limitation of a one-sided approach which mostly lacks practical relevance or generalisability of the results. The primary objective of this thesis is to provide a scientific guideline which should enable both practitioners and researchers to move forward the domain knowledge-driven research for variable derivation on a corporate basis. In the theoretical part, a broad overview of the main aspects which are necessary to undertake the research are given, such as the concept of domain knowledge, the data mining task of classification, variable derivation as a subtask of data preparation, and evaluation techniques. This part of the thesis refers to the methodological aspect of domain knowledge. In the practical part, a research design is developed for testing six hypotheses related to domain knowledge-driven variable derivation. The major contribution of the empirical study is concerned with testing the impact of domain knowledge on a real business data set compared to the impact of a standard and randomly derived data set. The business application of the research is a binary classification problem in the domain of an insurance business, which deals with the prediction of damages in legal expenses insurances. Domain knowledge is expressed through deriving the corporate variables by means of the business and data-driven constructive induction strategy. Six variable derivation steps are investigated: normalisation, instance relation, discretisation, categorical encoding, ratio, and multivariate mathematical function. The impact of the domain knowledge is examined by pairwise (with and without derived variables) performance comparisons for five classification techniques (decision trees, naive Bayes, logistic regression, artificial neural networks, k-nearest neighbours). The impact is measured by two classifier performance criteria: sensitivity and area under the ROC-curve (AUC). The McNemar significance test is used to verify the results. Based on the results, two hypotheses are clearly verified and accepted, three hypotheses are partly verified, and one hypothesis had to be rejected on the basis of the case study results. The thesis reveals a significant positive impact of domain knowledge-driven variable derivation on classifier performance for options of all six tested steps. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the classification technique influences the impact of the variable derivation steps, and the bundling of steps has a significant higher performance impact if the variables are derived by using domain knowledge (compared to a non-knowledge application). Finally, the research turns out that an empirical examination of the domain knowledge impact is very complex due to a high level of interaction between the selected research parameters (variable derivation step, classification technique, and performance criteria).

This study explored the generalizability of citizenship behavior, support, and fit to the occupational domain. In doing so, arguments to include occupation constructs in organizational analyses were offered, reliability and validity testing of the occupation constructs was performed, and relationships among the occupation constructs, their respective organizational counterparts, occupation-related outcomes, and organization-related outcomes were explored. Results of the assessments demonstrated that occupational citizenship behavior, perceived occupational support, and person-occupation fit are distinguishable from their organizational counterparts and that occupation constructs and organization constructs contributed independently to occupational activity and work place behavior. Overall findings from the study suggest inclusion of occupation constructs in organizational analyses can enrich, complement and/or supplement our understanding of organizational behavior.

Annotation:
Business information systems (BIS) comprise technological (e.g. programs), informational (e.g. content) and social artifacts (e.g. collaboration structures). Typically, such systems are constantly and collectively developed (co-developed) further by a variety of individuals within the organization. By recognizing these varying types of actors (concerning their goals, technical expertise and language means) and their predominantly developed artifact type, one can distinguish two types of subsystems: technical subsystems wherein the development of the system behavior is conducted by software developers; and business subsystems dominated by end-users developing informational artifacts. So far, co-development structures within and between these subsystems are not well understood, especially the aspect that - potentially driven by appropriate measures such as the provision of domain-specific languages - co-development might shift between these subsystems. This paper presents an approach for characterizing the co-development of real-world BIS with respect to direct participation from different kinds of contributors. This multilayered approach allows us to analyze the co-development with programming languages, domain-specific languages and end-user tools. The approach is suited to assess the direct participation of individuals from different subsystems in the development of evolving BIS. We focus on the intersection of these subsystems, present appropriate metrics and a multilayered analysis scheme. Contributions to artifacts are analyzed using social network analysis to detect structural properties of continuous co-development. The application to Learn@WU, a real-world BIS, demonstrates how end-user enabling technologies have shifted the co-development effort of the system from a small group of developers to a several orders of magnitude larger group of contributors. We observed an increase of direct participation over time on both informational and executable artifacts, while the number of technical experts was more or less constant. Our approach may act as a trigger for the application and further development of rigorous instruments for assessing co-development of BIS. (authors' abstract)

When a business organization designs an ethics program, should it adopt a situationist conception of moral psychology or a virtue approach to character building? In this dissertation I argue that the answer is, both. The complement model is a recommendation for business ethics programs that blends the best aspects of these two theories in social psychology and philosophy. I start by giving a critique of the experimental literature surrounding situationism and argue that older adults have different prosocial competencies than the younger college-age subjects used in the situationist experiments. I give an explanation of virtue development, which concludes with the claim that older adults are an overlooked resource to be used in formal ethics mentoring programs. I also present the findings from a study I conducted with business ethics professionals, which provided information that I used to formulate the recommendations for the complement model.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between dimensions of work ethic and dimensions of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and counterproductive work behavior (CWB). Design/Methodology/Approach: Data were collected from employed individuals in MBA and undergraduate management courses and their work supervisors (N = 233). Participants represented diverse occupations with respect to job levels and industries. Participants completed the work ethic inventory, and participants’ managers completed ratings of OCB and CWB. Findings: The work ethic dimension of centrality of work was positively related to both dimensions of OCB (i.e., OCB-I and OCB-O), and the work ethic dimension of morality/ethics was negatively related to one of the dimensions of CWB (i.e., CWB-I). Implications: Modern perspectives on job performance recognize the multidimensional nature of the domain (i.e., the expanded criterion domain). In addition, noncognitive predictors such as work ethic have value as individual differences that are associated with performance outcomes. The assessment of such constructs can help inform selection and placement activities where a focus on OCB and CWB is important to managers. Originality/Value: This study provides additional evidence on the relationship between work ethic and performance outcomes. Previous research has provided limited information on the relationship between dimensions of work ethic and dimensions of OCB, and no information existed on the relationship between work ethic dimensions and CWB.

Husqvarna is a Swedish company producing products for forestry, park and gardens. Due to harder competition they wish to increase efficacy in production. This can be achieved by shorter lead-times in the complex process of making casting molds. Activities within this process have certain relations and dependencies between each other that can be analyzed by using a Dependence Structure Matrix. The Dependence Structure Matrix is a tool that can improve efficiency by rearranging activities according to how they are dependent of each other.

The purpose is to make a Dependence Structure Matrix of activities that Husqvarna can use to analyze dependencies within the process of cast molding. The DSM Matrix will propose restructured activities of the process which can be evaluated to determine if greater efficacy can be reached.

To determine the activities within the process of making cast molds a workshop at Husqvarna for the people involved was conducted. A matrix has been constructed based on the information of activities and their dependencies. This information has then been analyzed by the software Multiplan.

The process of making casting molds could be analyzed by the DSM/DMM approach. A new order of how to carry out activities is the outcome of the analysis. The result can be analyzed by Husqvarna in order to determine if greater efficacy can be reached.

Prior research has demonstrated that feminine appearance is penalized in business contexts. However, a separate body of research, predominantly centered on electoral outcomes, has put forth conflicting results demonstrating that feminine appearance can be beneficial. In a series of experimental studies, I aim to resolve the conflict in the literature by proposing an expectation-matching theory. I propose that, although both domains of politics and business are associated with masculine characteristics, contexts within the political domain are associated with fewer masculine characteristics than contexts within the business domain and, as a result, perceivers expect and prefer less masculine facial appearances for political leaders than for business leaders. The findings of the studies add to the face perception literature and the gender bias literature that examines the impact of circumstances that make gender and professional roles discrepant in their impact on consequential outcomes, such as hiring and electoral outcomes.

A web service is a collection of functions that are packaged as a single entity and published to the network for use by other programs. Web services are building blocks for creating open distributed systems, and allow companies and individuals to quickly and cheaply make their digital assets available worldwide. With considerable interoperability, privacy management becomes an inevitable concern of the web services. Companies and individuals should be able to restrict the information available about themselves and specify the use of that information in order to protect their confidentiality. In the thesis, a privacy framework has been designed and implemented in order to prepare and match privacy documents for web services. Privacy documents are prepared based upon message ontologies which describe the input data of web services. Service requestors and providers prepare their own privacy documents which are going to be checked before the web service transaction begins. Privacy content has been derived from the World Wide Web Consortium&rsquo

Nowadays, business processes allow more automation of tasks and complex interconnections within the same system and across different systems, which is particularly facilitated by the emergence of Web services. In this context, the tasks of specifying and checking compliance at runtime become particularly challenging. In this thesis, our goal is twofold: monitoring and security in the context of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Thus, we proposed a view-based monitoring approach and a framework that target monitoring of business process compliance at runtime. Our monitoring framework aims to offer an easy way to specify properties to be monitored and to facilitate its integration with SOA based environments. Thus, we have developed a new monitoring language called BPath, which is an XPath-based language that offers among others, the ability to express and to check temporal and hybrid logic properties at runtime, making the execution of business processes visible by expressing and evaluating quantitative indicators, in order to detect any compliance violation at runtime. A specific compliance monitoring concern in SOA based environment is security, which is also an important aspect for companies willing to give access to some of their resources over the Web. Thus, we proposed a domain specific language (DSL) based architecture for ensuring security in SOA environments. We particularly focused on access control by proposing a graphical language to facilitate the specification and generation of access control policies. Our approaches are implemented and integrated within a complete end to end compliance framework developed within the COMPAS project

Early requirements analysis in context of project and engineering-based organisations deals with the establishment of the top-level definition of the project’s product. Literature shows that communication and coordination is challenging in conjunction with visualisation and representation of knowledge in a cross-community constellation of business and product development (PD) teams concerned with early requirements analysis. Recently debated formalisms produce (coherent) intentional models that aim at increasing rationalisation and confidence in engineering definitions using the concept of goals. But most goal-oriented approaches fell short in establishing usable intentional structures that are able to provide the respective transparency for supporting continuously business-engineering evolutions within collaboration and knowledge conversions along a PD process. In this sense, this thesis provides a complementing (informal) approach that emphasises on business and engineering collaboration and knowledge conversions. In this context a tripartite knowledge-driven concept is proposed that anchors a value-oriented organisation of intentional structures (i. E. Business needs and expectations) and traces to engineering definitions. In addition, this concept serves the notion of knowledge representation forum and illustrates how to perform valuation and verifications of intentional structures implemented in forms of requirements. This work was developed along a hybrid action research methodology that employs an empirical study and two industrial application cases

Many civil society organisations (CSOs) worldwide today face declining memberships, mission-drift or that they no longer are seen as relevant in society today. Several researchers warn that this development may lead to diminished democracy on both the national level and on the organisational level. This dissertation presents a longitudinal case study of the evolving strategy formation processes as they play out within a group of organisations surrounding one of the oldest nonprofits in Sweden, the IOGT-NTO. This membership-based federation and its sister organisations are treated in the analysis as a non-profit group, or interorganisational domain, held together by a shared system of values. The group has been able to retain and even develop much of its character as well as remain true to its original mission. This study demonstrates the importance of a membership-based governance system, which is able to stay true to the organisation's ideological core. It also points at the importance of having processes that enable the organisation to change along with society, while also preserving a certain distance from its surrounding environment so that it can maintain its distinctiveness. By doing this, the organisation is not just staying true to its original mission, but also actively contributing to democracy by including new groups of members in the decision-making process. Finally, the IOGT-NTO case highlights how crucial it is to keep the ideological discussion alive within the governance system. In combination, these structures and mechanisms might enable a CSO to mitigate the iron law of oligarchy and revitalize itself. In a scope where continuous innovations are seen each day, the cyberspace can be seen as the tech-entrepreneurs’ playground for delivering new solutions to customers. Digital start-ups who interact through the cyberspace operate with little to no restriction despite having limiting resource. In 2008 a man named Satoshi Nakamoto developed a new technology called blockchain. The new breed of firms providing blockchain solutions have been painted to live in a borderless world with little technical restrictions. Exploring the effects that blockchain brings to their internationalisation has brought our attention to study the early internationalisation of blockchain born globals and their business ecosystem. The deductive and qualitative approach gave the results from four different companies that were involved in blockchain technology. By using previous theory on internationalisation and a deductive approach a conceptual synthesis was developed. The synthesis was later applied in the case-companies to observe the results. The findings have shown that the firms implementing blockchain in the core offering has resulted in an accelerated internationalisation. The major factors contributing to this quick internationalisations is the spread of knowledge between buyers and sellers, trough the cyberspace. However, the authors were unable to find a relationship between the accelerated internationalisation and to the extent in which a firm has implemented blockchain in its core offering. The finding has given the authors prominent answers to the research question and has highlighted the complexity of the subject. The, authors conclude the thesis by displaying the importance of cyberspace in the business ecosystem; how it attracts customers and the importance of the company’s business model. Blockchain technology proved to have effects on the process of internationalisation due to superior technological performance, but also its hype.

Business Intelligence (BI) and data analytics has grown to become one of the most prioritized technological investments for organizations today. For BI systems to be valuable for organizations’ decision making and support of end-users, research argues that competencies of multiple areas need to be represented in the work with BI. This includes knowledge of both IT and business domains, where challenges such as lack of domain competencies have been identified in the Swedish industry sector. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate the representation of BI competencies, with focus on IT, business domain, data analytics and their integration. The research is conducted through a qualitative case study at ASSA ABLOY, a leading company in the Swedish industry sector, where interviews are made with respondents involved with five BI tools from different functions of the company. The empirical findings show that competencies of IT and business domains are represented to a higher degree than data analytics. In addition, the findings show that while integration between these areas is being promoted, there is potential for further involvement with in-house IT and a need for cross-border knowledge to bridge the gap between functions involved with BI.

Ontologies in nowadays are widely used in the process of development of modern information systems, since they are suitable to represent domain knowl-edge. However, the development of domain rules in ontology-based information systems is required to be analysed. In this dissertation, the author proposes a formal method of transforming ontology axioms to domain rules, making an im-portant and integral part of each domain and used to constrain or direct different aspects of a domain. Such rules can be consecutively transformed into executable form and implemented in a software system of an information system. Similar to other network behavioral studiesthe multidimensional approach was utilized where networking was dividedinto sub dimensions with external and internal counterparts. The domainspecific approach to creativity was used in order to attempt to determinewhich creative domain is significant for different networking behaviors.106 individuals participated in the study and the sample is considered anon-random convenience sample. The results showed that certain networkbehaviors interacted with different creative domains. The creative domainof everyday and verbal creativity were both unique predictors of networkbehavior and were the creative domains who were the most relevant.Structural facets in the form of work experience, organizational size andbiological gender were also explored. Work experience was shown to be aweak moderating variable to the relationship of network behavior andcreativity. Organizational size had no significant results and biologicalgender was significant for two of the creative domains: Math / scientificand artistic creativity. Results from the present study provide furtherevidence towards an area which is relatively new. The findings can be usedto create an empirical foundation in recruitment scenarios which mayrequire individuals with particular set of psychological traits.

With the support of four vegetarian and vegan companies established on the Swedish market, Astrid och Aporna, Ekko Gourmet, Tzay and Quorn, the objective of this study is to understand why companies produce vegan and vegetarian products imitated with real meat products as well as how these companies market these products. The data was collected through interviews with suitable representatives from respective company. The empirical data collected from the interviews have further been analysed together with theories from past researches. The research approaches of this study has been a mixture of inductive and deductive when handling our data. The results from this thesis enlightens that there are contrasting strategies behind the products’ visual appearance, chosen target group and marketing among the different vegetarian and vegan companies on the Swedish market. We have discovered patterns between the companies’ target audiences and how these companies have designed their products depending of target audience Due to time limitations and companies’ unwillingness to participate in interviews, a broader perspective on the topic could not be given. Also, this study only looks at vegan and vegetarian companies operating in Sweden. A suggestion for future research is to investigate the consumer’s perspective and perceptions of vegan and vegetarian products by conducting a quantitative research to distinguish if the companies’ strategies are consistent with the perceptions of consumers on the Swedish market.

The major problem addressed in this thesis is the definition of a new SPLE methodology that covers both phases of the SPLE process and focuses on the derivation of behavioral models of SPL products. In Chapter 2 three research areas scope context of this thesis: Software Product Lines, Business Processes, and Model-Driven Engineering. Throughout Chapter 3, we propose a new SPLE methodology that focuses on the derivation of product behavior. We first describe the main flow of the methodology, and then detail the individual steps. In chapter 4 we propose a new domain specific language called CBPF created for modeling composable business process fragments. A model driven approach is followed for creating CBPF: definition of the abstract syntax, graphical concrete syntax and translational semantics. In Chapter 5 we propose several types of verifications that can be applied to business processfragments to determine their "correctness". For structural verification we definine a set of fragment consistency rules that should be valid for every business process fragment created with CBPF. To check behavioral correctness we first transform the business process fragment into an equivalent HCPN. We can then check generic properties but also define aset of fragment specific properties. In chapter 6 we exemplify the proposed SPL methodology by applying it to a case study from the crisis management system domain. We also propose a tool suite that supports our methodology. Chapter 7 describes possible improvements and extensions to the contributions of this thesis. We conclude the thesis in Chapter 8 and draw some conclusions.

In the context of the Semantic Web, ontologies refer to the consensual and formal description of shared concepts in a domain. Ontologies are said to be a way to aid communication between humans and machines and also between machines for agent communication. The importance of ontologies for providing a shared understanding of common domains, and as a means for data exchange at the syntactic and semantic level has increased considerably in the last years. Therefore, ontology management becomes a significant task to make distributed and heterogeneous knowledge bases available to the end users. Ontology alignment is the process where ontology from different domains can be matched and processed further together, hence sharing a common understanding of the structure of information among different people. This research starts from a comprehensive review of the current development of ontology, the concepts of ontology alignments and relevant approaches. The first motivation of this work is trying to summarise the common features of ontology alignment and identify underdevelopment areas of ontology alignment. It then works on how complex businesses can be designed and managed by semantic modelling which can help define the data and the relationships between these entities, which provides the ability to abstract different kinds of data and provides an understanding of how the data elements relate. The main contributions of this work is to develop a framework of handling an important category of ontology alignment based on the logical composition of classes, especially under a case that one class from a certain domain becomes a logic prerequisites (assumption) of another class from a different domain (commitment) which only happens if the class from the first domain becomes valid. Under this logic, previously un-alignable classes or miss-aligned classes can be aligned in a significantly improved manner. A well-known rely/guarantee method has been adopted to clearly express such relationships between newly-alignable classes. The proposed methodology has be implemented and evaluated on a realistic case study.

In a world that is moving faster and faster, a company’s ability to align to market changes is becoming a major competitive factor. Forecasting enables companies to predict what lies ahead, e.g. trend shifts or market turns, and makes it possible to plan for it. But looking into the future is never an easy task.

“Prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future.” (Niels Bohr, 1885-1962)

However, progress in the field of forecasting has shown that it is possible for companies to improve on forecasting practices. This master thesis looks at the sales forecasting practices in MNCs primarily operating in emerging and developing countries. We examine the whole process of sales forecasting, also known as forecasting management, in order to develop a comprehensive model for forecasting in this type of companies. The research is based on a single case study, which is then later generalized into broader conclusions.

The conclusion of this master thesis is that forecasting is a four-step exercise. The four stages we have identified are: Knowledge creation, knowledge transformation, knowledge use and feedback. In the course of these four stages a company’s sales forecast is developed, changed and used. By understanding how each stage works and what to focus on, companies will be able to improve their forecasting practices.

This qualitative study aims to identify challenges experienced amongst consumers in Stockholm when transitioning to a vegan diet. Five consumers between the ages of 24-27 have during a period of one month assumed the task of transitioning to a vegan diet. The results were analyzed through the lens of The Multidisciplinary Model of the main factors affecting consumer behaviour in the food domain and as well as the Cognitive dissonance theory to enable a deeper analysis. The study shows that information, supply and psychological influences are three main areas in which barriers are present. Lack of marketing in store and online, lack of clear labeling on products and lack of supply in both stores and restaurants were the most apparent challenges experienced amongst consumers which can be barriers when transitioning to a vegan diet. Furthermore, psychological influences that were perceived as barriers by the consumers was the presence of dissonance and the feeling of lack of support and inspiration.

How do firms tend to their current viability while remaining competitive in the long-term? This question lays out the basis for this thesis by highlighting their conflicting logics through the concept of organizational ambidexterity. Literature makes a distinction between competing in mature markets and existing technologies (exploitation) versus new markets and new technologies (exploration). The preponderance of studies shows that, as firms grow larger, they tend to form core rigidities in their culture, structure and processes that hamper their efforts to adapt to the changing environment. By overemphasizing exploitative activities, future challenges or opportunities remain unexplored which can have a devastating effect in the event of radical, external changes. The cases of Nokia and Kodak should serve as cautionary tales in this regard. The automotive industry is currently undergoing a transition to electric cars. We conduct a case study at Volvo Cars from a senior leadership perspective, to illustrate the importance of exploration and how it can be legitimized during an industry transformation. Our work points to three major findings. First, communicating the importance of the transformation with the rest of the organization is imperative to creating goal alignment. Secondly, interorganizational collaboration in R&D helps Volvo to tap into knowledge that resides outside the organization and thereby increasing the chances of a successful transition to electric cars. Thirdly, agile management contributes to knowledge diffusion and is a powerful tool to counter organizational inertia by adding to firms’ speed and responsiveness, making them act more similarly to smaller, entrepreneurial firms.

The purpose of this literature review is to investigate and discuss: (1) the characteristics measured by innovation assessments, and (2) the comparison of characteristics measured by creativity assessments with those of innovation assessments. This will be done by: (1) collecting creativity and innovation assessments, and (2) comparing and contrasting the characteristics measured by each assessment. This study reveals that innovation assessments do not measure the innovation process in its entirety. The findings show that creativity and innovation assessments lack in assessing the entire innovation process, assessing the innovation process on an individual level, and assessing an individual's change or growth in the innovation process. Based on the findings, future research needs to be done to develop an individualized innovation assessment.

Over the past decades, a new context in favor of sustainable development emerged. New models of consumption and production are developed. This shift from intensive innovation to sustainable innovation leads some companies to rethink their business model. However, this business model evolution requires strategic and organizational changes that some companies fail to overcome. These companies’ situations reveal a double challenge : the need to characterize sustainable innovation on the one hand and defining a strategy for disseminating sustainable innovation on the other hand.To characterize sustainable innovation, three notions are mobilized : the business model, sustainability and functionality. The results of this exploration suggest the use of the business modelas an intermediary object to promote the co-construction and the evolution of business models. The study of sustainable led us to associate functional economy - servicial business model - to eco-design- environmental design - as a declination of sustainable innovation. Functionality concept analysis revealed the complementarity of functional economy and eco-design approaches. This allows us to define new offers from the use-values point of view. The exploration of these three notions also leads to propose a paradigm shift in favor of sustainable paradigm. This paradigm shift is followed by the development and characterization of business models trajectories. These trajectories guide companies in achieving the highest levels of sustainable innovation on the long term. These theoretical results were used to develop a method called Business Model Explorer for Sustainability (BMES). The BMES method allows companies to develop sustainable business models and to define trajectories toward these business models. The method is based on the upgradability concept as operational application of sustainable innovation. The method was developed and tested with the two industrial partners of IDCyclUM project : Neopost and Rowenta. One of the main proposed research perspectives is to continue defining sustainable innovation. This concept remains indeed ambiguous and there is still no consensus about its definition at present

Annotation:
Cognitive ability is one of the most frequently investigated individual differences in management and psychology. Countless studies have demonstrated that tests measuring cognitive ability or intelligence predict a number of important real-world outcomes such as academic performance, vocational training performance, and job performance. Although the relationship between intelligence and real-world performance is well established, there is a lack of consensus among scholars with regard to how intelligence should be conceptualized and measured. Of the more traditional theories of intelligence, two perspectives are particularly dominant: the Cattell-Horn model of fluid and crystallized intelligence and the theory of General Cognitive Ability (GCA or g). Fluid ability (Gf) represents novel or abstract problem solving capability and is believed to have a physiological basis. In contrast, crystallized ability (Gc) is associated with learned or acculturated knowledge. Drawing on recent research in neuroscience, as well as research on past performance, the nature of work, and expert performance, I argue that compared to measures of fluid ability, crystallized ability measures should more strongly predict real-world criteria in the classroom as well as the workplace. This idea was meta-analytically examined using a large, diverse set of over 400 primary studies spanning the past 100 years. With regard to academic performance, measures of fluid ability were found to positively predict learning (as measured by grades). However, as hypothesized, crystallized ability measures were found to be superior predictors of academic performance compared to their fluid ability counterparts. This finding was true for both high school and college students. Likewise, similar patterns of results were observed with regard to both training performance and job performance. Again, crystallized ability measures were found to be better predictors of performance than fluid measures. This finding was consistent at the overall level of analysis as well as for medium complexity jobs. These findings have important implications for both intelligence theory and selection practice. Contemporary intelligence theory has placed great emphasis on the role of fluid ability, and some researchers have argued that Gf and g are essentially the same construct. However, the results of this study, which are based on criterion-related validities rather than factor-analytic evidence, demonstrate that Gc measures are superior predictors in comparison to Gf measures. This is contrary to what one would expect if Gf and g were indeed the same construct. Rather, the findings of this study are more consistent with General Cognitive Ability theory, which predicts that Gc indicators will be the best predictors of future learning and performance. Given that Gc measures demonstrate higher criterion-related validities than Gf measures, Gc measures are likely to be preferred for selection purposes. Further, Gf scores are known to decline with age while Gc scores remain relatively stable over the lifespan. Thus, when used for selection purposes, Gf tests may underpredict the performance of older workers. In contrast, research has shown that Gc measures are predictively unbiased. Additional implications for theory and practice are discussed, along with study limitations and opportunities for future research.

The Swedish Armed Forces have completed an HR transformation in accordance with a model that has spread worldwide as well as in Sweden. There are similarities regarding how organizations have handled these changes which also raise questions on organizational decision-making. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the decision-making process leading up to project HR transformation of the Swedish Armed Forces. This has been accomplished by researching factors that have affected the process and thereby the final choice of alternative. This study is a document- and interview-based qualitative study where data from both published and unpublished documents combined with data collected from interviews with respondents affiliated with the project, have been analyzed. Our conclusions are that the decision-making process has been affected by factors and actions in accordance with institutional theory, which is a conforming due to external comparison and the use of external consultants.
