In this paper, the author investigates the effect on understanding of using business domain models that are constructed with Resource-Event-Agent (REA) modeling patterns. First, the author analyzes REA modeling structures to identify the enabling factors and the mechanisms by means of which users recognize these structures in a conceptual model and description of an information retrieval and interpretation task. Based on this understanding, the author hypothesizes positive effects on model understanding for situations where REA patterns can be recognized in both task and model. An experiment is then conducted to demonstrate a better understanding of models with REA patterns compared to information equivalent models without REA patterns. The results of this experiment indicate that REA patterns can be recognized with minimal prior patterns training and that the use of REA patterns leads to models that are easier to understand for novice model users.

The presented paper deals with the identification of cyclical behaviour of business cycle from the time and frequency domain perspective. Herewith, methods for obtaining the growth business cycle are investigated – the first order difference, the unobserved component models, the regression curves and filtration using the Baxter-King, Christiano-Fitzgerald and Hodrick-Prescott filter. In the case of the time domain, the analysis identification of cycle lengths is based on the dating process of the growth business cycle. Thus, the right and left variant of the naive techniques and the Bry-Boschan algorithm are applied. In the case of the frequency domain, the analysis of the cyclical structure trough spectrum estimate via the periodogram and the autoregressive process are suggested. Results from both domain approaches are compared. On their bases, recommendations for the cyclical structure identification of the growth business cycle of the Czech Republic are formulated. In the time domain analysis, the evaluation of the unity results of detrending techniques from the identification turning point points of view is attached. The analyses are done on the quarterly data of the GDP, the total industry excluding construction, the gross capital formation in 1996–2008 and on the final consumption expenditure in 1995–2008.

This paper adopts the notion of metaphostruction (Wiliński 2015), the conceptual theory of metaphor (Kӧvecses 2002) and the corpus-based method geared specifically for investigating the interaction between target domains and the source domain lexemes that occur in them. The method, referred to as metaphostructional analysis (Wiliński 2015), is used to determine the degree of association between the target domain of business and the source domain lexemes derived from military terminology. The results of the metaphostructional analysis reveal that there are indeed war terms that demonstrate strong or loose associations with the target domain of business, and that these instantiate different metaphorical mappings.

Prior research hardly investigates how externally focused competitive strategies can be bridged with internal IT processes. We aim to explore the relationship between five archetypical IT management profiles (ITMP) and four business strategy archetypes linked with six IT business value domains. Considering prior literature, we propose that each ITMP delivers unique sources of value, thus, contributes to specific IT business value domains. Furthermore, we assume that each business strategy archetype requires contributions to these domains. To test our hypotheses, we conducted a matched-pair study within manufacturing firms. Our findings indicate that IT business value domains link competitive strategy and IT management approaches. For instance, IT functions that act as Project Coordinator of IT-based activities, manage relationships between vendors and business units were found to contribute to firm's external integration. We present evidence for the significance of aligning externally focused strategies with internal IT management approaches.

Davidsson, Louise, und Sara Thulin. „The Legal Status of Domain Names : A Business Context“. Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Commercial Law, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-1089.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:

Domain names are still a relatively unknown occurrence and despite being a natural part in

most people’s every-day life, there are few who reflect over their importance. The original

function of domain names was merely to serve as technical addresses and to facilitate the

locating of websites on the Internet. Today domain names are much more than this. In

addition to the address function, domain names may also serve as indications of goods,

services, businesses or information. The domain name is usually the first contact one gets

with a website and it has become crucial for businesses to have their company name or

trade marks registered as domain names. The issue of the legal status of domain names has

mainly been discussed from an American point of view and in Sweden this discussion has

almost entirely fallen under the radar. If the legal status of a domain name were clear, it

would be easier for businesses to avail themselves of the value of that domain name. It

would possibly even contribute to strengthening the legal protection for the domain name

holder, in for example insolvency or bankruptcy procedures.

Intellectual property exists in many different forms, the main being patents, trade marks,

copyright and design rights. Although there are many differences between them, they all

have in common that they establish property protection over intangibles such as ideas,

inventions, signs and information. As a domain name is not a physical object, there can be

no doubt that it is an intangible. The question is whether it is property. Intellectual

property is not a static area and it can, in line with societal and technological development,

be expanded to include new types.

The legal status of domain names is generally discussed in the light of the close connection

they have with trade marks. Except from their original function, the trade mark function of

domain names can probably be considered as one of the most commonly accepted. It is

indicated in this thesis that that function contributes to that a domain name can be

considered as a distinctive sign and thereby obtain protection, in the same way as an

unregistered trade mark.

According to current accounting rules, businesses may, to some extent, avail themselves of

the value of a domain name. Domain names are under certain circumstances identified as

intangible assets and even as ‘similar rights’ to for example trade marks and patents in

accounting and taxation situations.

At this time it is not possible to legislate on the area of the legal status of a domain name

on a Community level, as this most likely would have to include a consideration of the

existence of property rights and consequently fall outside the legislative powers of the

Community.

Both the legal development and the legal discussions on the topic of the legal status of

domain names in Sweden have been relatively sparse. Nonetheless, there have been some

interesting opinions.

By investigating what positions the different authorities, academics and practitioners have

taken on the legal status of domain names it can be concluded that the prevailing opinion

in Sweden is that domain names are not considered as property. The reason for this seems

to be that domain names as such, are in fact no more than technical constructions and that

by registering a domain name the registrant only becomes the holder of a contractual right.

However, there are some diverging opinions which could suggest that the legal status of

domain names in Sweden is not yet settled. The aspects which are then taken into

consideration include that domain names have developed to become important and

valuable assets for an increasing number of businesses. A domain name is a precondition

for the creation of a website and therefore of crucial importance for, in particular, online

based businesses. However, they are of increasing importance for all businesses to reach

out to and compete over the same customers.

It is advocated that the fact that domain names are freely traded with indicates that domain

names are property. It has also been questioned whether an asset with a true economic

value, such as a domain name, can exist without being considered as an item of property.

The steps taken in other jurisdictions have shown that the legal status of domain names is

not even clear in some of the countries with the greatest experience of domain names.

Nonetheless, the legal status is given attention in those countries and the discussion has

been initiated. In general, it can be concluded that the development seems to go toward

higher awareness of the value of domain names.

Milashevich, Anna. „Re-visioning business : archetypal patterns in the business domain and their relation to the concept of business creativity“. Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/21358/.

Annotation:
The principal aim of the thesis is to re-vision what I am calling ‘the business domain’ by showing how different archetypal energies of the collective unconscious operate in it and how they structure the domain’s creative dynamics. In this task, I am drawing on a range of Jungian theories. While the psychoanalytic organisational approach, with its focus on the personal/group unconscious, is well developed, the Jungian organisational approach is in its infancy with the result that little is said in the relevant literature to date about collective unconscious dominants, the archetypes. The introduction of this perspective involves arguing against the prevailing psychoanalytic emphasis on the pathological aspects of the business domain. The key value of the archetypal approach is that it exposes the inherent tensions within business life. In addition, it adds a much-needed catalyst for bringing insight into creativity and innovation as they manifest in the business domain. Jungian psychology, as I argue, offers a perspective that is instructive for grasping the complexities of creativity in business, which differs from manifestations of creativity in other domains such as the arts and sciences. Jungian psychology could thus make a valuable contribution to the analysis of business dynamics. I will also demonstrate how the archetypal approach can be helpful in containing the unconscious projected contents (both personal and collective) inherent in the business domain. As a first step in delineating the value and scope of an archetypal understanding of the dynamics in the business domain, this thesis invites further consideration of the question about how this approach can be used to construct a theoretical framework for analysing the business domain and what this framework could look like.

Resources Events Agents (REA) ontology is a profound business modeling ontology that was developed to define the architecture of accounting information systems. Nevertheless, REA did not manage to get the same attention as other business modeling ontologies. One reason of such abandon is the absence of a meaningful visual notation for the ontology, which has resulted in an abstruse ontology to non-academic audience. Another reason for this abandon is the fact that REA does not have a standard formal representation. This has resulted in a humble amount of researches which have focused on defining meta-models of the ontology while neglecting the wider purpose of REA-based information systems development. Consequently, the ontology was deviated away from its original purpose, and rather used in business schools. To solve the aforementioned issues, this research presents a Model Driven Development (MDD) technique in the form of a REA-based Domain Specific Visual Language (DSVL) that is implemented within a modeling and code generation editor. This effort was taken in order to answer the question of “How would a REA-DSVL based tool make the REA ontology implementable in the domain of information systems development?” In order to answer the research question, a design science methodology (DSRM) was implemented as the structure of this research. The DSRM was chosen because this research aims to develop three main artifacts. These are; a meta-model of REA, a visual notation of REA, and a REA-DSVL-based modeling and code generation tool. The first phase of the DSRM was to identify the problems which were mentioned earlier, followed by the requirements identification phase which drew the outline of the; meta-model, the visual notation, and the tool. After that, the development phase was conducted in order to develop the aforementioned artifacts. The editor was then demonstrated using a case study of a local company in Stockholm-Sweden. Finally, the resulted artifacts were evaluated based on the collected requirements and the results from the case study. Based on the analyses of the artifacts and the case study, this research was concluded with the result that a REA-based DSVL tool can help in boosting the planning and analysis phases of the software development lifecycle (SDLC). This is achieved by automating some of the conventional software planning and design tasks, which would lead to more accurate systems’ designs; thus, minimizing the time of the planning and design phases. And it can be achieved by abstracting the direct logic of REA through providing functionalities that help users from different backgrounds (academic and professional) to embrace a business modeling editor rather than an ontology; thus, attracting a wider users base for implementing REA.

The first timeshare resorts were created in the 1960s. Since then, the concept of vacation timesharing has spread around the world. Despite significant growth in the last 30 years, little academic research exists concerning the competencies required to manage timeshare resorts. This study provides new perspective on competency domain clusters within the timeshare industry. Three hundred thirty one property-level timeshare managers were asked to rate the importance and frequency of use of each competency domain cluster. The data gathered from the survey reveals a relationship between the types of resort a manager manages and the importance and frequency ratings of each competency's domain cluster. Further, a surprising result was the discovery of a lack of industry certification among the respondents. These results may be useful in training and development strategies for timeshare resort managers.

Today, millions of purchased domain sites names are sitting unused with no real web designs or concrete purpose coupled with them. Why would not owners engage a web-hosting domain-parking hotel so they can earn money through eyeballs advertising or click revenue while their sites sits unused? Parking hotels claim access to passive domain monetization through advertising programs tailored to generate revenue via automatic web page generations containing tailored advertisement. When visitors access these web sites, revenue is generated for domain owners. This study sought to investigate if parking hotels’ advertising claim, that you can make money through them, carries substance. Hence, is it possible to generate sufficient revenue using a parking hotel’s advertising revenue model to pay for the cost of domain ownership and, if possible, generate excess revenue? The study’s epistemological approach, trying to distinguish the truth about the hotels’ claims, stems from a ontological discussion around web hosting hotels’ advertising vehicle existence and its ability to generates revenue. The study challenged a parking hotel’s claim through an inductive quantitative approach by watching advertising revenue for 59 domain names over 105 days. Quantitative data concluded, through a statistical approach, that there were insufficient advertising income, approximately a nickel, to cover the annual cost of approximately $6 USD. Therefore, the study concluded that the advertising claims were misleading and recommends that sites are not purchased, or renew, for the purpose of making money through web hotels’ advertising models.

Aldin, Laden. „Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns“. Thesis, Brunel University, 2010. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/4635.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
In modern organisations business process modelling has become fundamental due to the increasing rate of organisational change. As a consequence, an organisation needs to continuously redesign its business processes on a regular basis. One major problem associated with the way business process modelling (BPM) is carried out today is the lack of explicit and systematic reuse of previously developed models. Enabling the reuse of previously modelled behaviour can have a beneficial impact on the quality and efficiency of the overall information systems development process and also improve the effectiveness of an organisation’s business processes. In related disciplines, like software engineering, patterns have emerged as a widely accepted architectural mechanism for reusing solutions. In business process modelling the use of patterns is quite limited apart from few sporadic attempts proposed by the literature. Thus, pattern-based BPM is not commonplace. Business process patterns should ideally be discovered from the empirical analysis of organisational processes. Empiricism is currently not the basis for the discovery of patterns for business process modelling and no systematic methodology for collecting and analysing process models of business organisations currently exists. The purpose of the presented research project is to develop a methodological framework for achieving reuse in BPM via the discovery and adoption of patterns. The framework is called Semantic Discovery and Reuse of Business Process Patterns (SDR). SDR provides a systematic method for identifying patterns among organisational data assets representing business behaviour. The framework adopts ontologies (i.e., formalised conceptual models of real-world domains) in order to facilitate such discovery. The research has also produced an ontology of business processes that provides the underlying semantic definitions of processes and their constituent parts. The use of ontologies to model business processes represents a novel approach and combines advances achieved by the Semantic Web and BPM communities. The methodological framework also relates to a new line of research in BPM on declarative business processes in which the models specify what should be done rather than how to ‘prescriptively’ do it. The research follows a design science method for designing and evaluating SDR. Evaluation is carried out using real world sources and reuse scenarios taken from both the financial and educational domains.

Ong, Thian-Huat. „Language- and domain-independent knowledge maps: A statistical phrase indexing approach“. Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290042.

Annotation:
Global economy increases the need for multilingual systems, while each domain has a large repository of knowledge, particularly explicit knowledge usually captured in text. The speed of textual information being produced has exceeded the speed at which a person can process the information, so an automated approach to alleviate the information overload problem is needed. Unlike structured data in databases, unstructured text cannot be readily understood and processed by computers. This dissertation aims to create a language- and domain-independent approach to automatically generating hierarchical knowledge maps that enable the users to browse and understand the concepts hidden in the underlying knowledge sources. A system development research methodology was adopted to build and evaluate prototype systems to study the research questions. In order to process textual knowledge, a statistical phrase indexing algorithm was proposed and applied to the Chinese language. Next, the algorithm was extended to be able to process multiple languages and domains. Lastly, the results of the algorithm was further applied to a case study using the dissertation's proposed automated framework for generating hierarchical knowledge maps in Chinese news collection. This dissertation has two main contributions. First, it demonstrated that an automated approach is effective in creating knowledge maps for users to browse the underlying knowledge. The approach combines statistical phrase extraction algorithm for representing textual knowledge and neural networks for clustering related concepts and visualization. Second, it provided a set of language- and domain-independent tools to extract phrases from a textual knowledge in order to support text mining applications.

This research examines WHY and HOW a new approach to Enterprise Strategy and IT planning can be adopted in the European national financial sector by using Enterprise Architecture (EA). EA has been promoted as a key tool for transformation and modernisation of the enterprise. By following best practices from successful case studies and the European Central Bank (ECB), the claim is that the adoption of EA will ensure that IT resources and business processes are planned, leveraged, and coordinated better in national financial sectors. In our five supporting papers, several qualitative case studies in Europe were investigated by applying an interpretive perspective. According to common belief EA connects business and IT; it is an important tool for survival and growth. Many EA endeavours, however, fail. The question is how can risks of EA implementation failure be reduced at an early stage? Underlying questions concern: why would a particular organisation need EA, can implementation risks be identified and are solutions available to reduce the failure rate? In order to answer research questions a literature study is performed to build the Business Transformation Enablement Program framework (BTEP). It advocates deliberate motivation, active risk management and an iterative and incremental implementation of EA. Next to the literature, the framework is validated through the Small National Bank (SNB) implementation. Data was collected in both structured, semi-structured and ad-hoc methods. Grounded theory techniques were used to analyse the data logically, using existing theory only as prior constructs. The theoretical abstractions, generalisations and experience generated in the research process have been published and availed to specialised groups.

Annotation:
This paper deals with a study on a method to support the decision on entering business areas in a business model consisting of manufacturing and service. This method divides the business model into business areas by the functions that support a company to decide whether it should enter business areas. This method prioritizes the areas from the aspects of profit opportunities, barriers to entry, and interactions between the areas. This method reduces the time to decide which business area to enter and reduces the number of examination objects to the number of business areas (n) or fewer from the total number of possible combinations (2 to the 2nd power n). To confirm the efficiency of this method, we demonstrated two case studies in the IT services industry. In the first case study, from the perspective of a UPS battery supplier, the number of examination objects is 3 when the number of business areas is 11. And the first case study indicates that a suitable strategy for a battery supplier is to concentrate on the strategy of supplying batteries. In the second case study, from the perspective of an IT service provider, the number of examination objects is 10 when the number of business areas is 11. The second case study indicates that a suitable strategy for an IT service provider is vertical integration from software development to data center operation and hardware manufacturing.
