Introduction To date, studies have shown a high prevalence of burnout in surgeons. Various factors have been found to be associated with burnout, and it has significant consequences personally and systemically. Junior doctors are increasingly placing their own health and wellbeing as the most important factor in their decisions about training. Finding ways to reduce and prevent burnout is imperative to promote surgical specialties as attractive training pathways. Methods The MEDLINE, PsychInfo and EMBASE databases were searched using the subject headings related to surgery and burnout. All full text articles that reported data related to burnout were eligible for inclusion. Articles which did not use the Maslach Burnout Inventory or included non-surgical groups were excluded; 62 articles fulfilled the criteria for inclusion. Findings Younger age and female sex tended to be associated with higher levels of burnout. Those further in training had lower levels of burnout, while residents suffered more than their seniors. Burnout is associated with a lower personal quality of life, depression and alcohol misuse. Academic work and emotional intelligence may be protective of burnout. Certain personality types are less likely to be burnt out. Mentorship may reduce levels of burnout. Conclusions Workload and work environment are areas that could be looked at to reduce job demands that lead to burnout. Intervening in certain psychological factors such as emotional intelligence, resilience and mindfulness may help to reduce burnout. Promoting physical and mental health is important in alleviating burnout, and these factors likely have a complex interplay.

Objectives: Physicians have high rates of burnout with an Otolaryngology burnout rate of 42%. The most studied burnout correlation is increased work hours. More recently, mindfulness training programs have been shown to decrease burnout and increase self-compassion. Regarding burnout studies specific to Otolaryngology residents, there have been few in the past decade. This study explores correlations between burnout and procedure involvement, non-clinical responsibilities and mindfulness practices along with gathering updated work hours data. Methods: A single survey question was shown to be a reliable substitute for Maslach Burnout Inventory in assessing burnout. A survey was sent to all US Otolaryngology residents to investigate the correlation of burnout to post-graduate year, work hours, procedure involvement, non-clinical responsibilities, and mindfulness practices. Residents were asked to answer questions regarding their previous year of training. Results: Overall burnout was 50%. PGY-1 and PGY-5 were completed with a low burnout rate compared to other years. Increased work hours were confirmed to increase burnout. Increased involvement in procedures, decreased exercise, and increased time completing paperwork correlated with increased burnout. No other factors including mindfulness correlated with increased or decreased burnout. However, only 20% who practiced mindfulness training had this training offered by their department or university. Conclusion: Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology A 50% burnout rate is a concerning rate. Increased work hours and PGY-2 through PGY-4 correlated with increased burnout. Accessibility to mindfulness training was low. As mindfulness training is a proven activity to decrease burnout, more departments could benefit from providing these experiences to their residents.

Objective. This study sought to determine which demographic and practice characteristics were predictive of professional burnout in otolaryngologists. Study Design. Cross-sectional survey. Setting. Tertiary care hospital. Subjects and Methods. Postal mailings, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), were sent to alumni of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics otolaryngology program. Participants completed the MBI according to the enclosed instructions. In addition, they answered a brief questionnaire comprising 8 items designed to collect demographic information. The MBI was then scored and subjects were classified according to their degree of burnout. Statistical analysis was then performed, and correlations were used to summarize associations between continuous variables. Results. This study had a response rate of 49% to the survey. Of the respondents, 3.5% met criteria for burnout syndrome, and 16% were classified as having high levels of burnout according to the MBI. Young age, number of hours worked per week, and length of time in practice were found to be statistically significant predictors of burnout. In addition, the length of time married and the presence of children in the home were also significant predictors of burnout. Conclusion. The authors report an investigation of burnout in practicing otolaryngologists using a validated instrument with correlation to potentially modifiable risk factors. The experience of burnout was found to correlate significantly with both personal and professional factors, each of which can potentially be addressed to curb the incidence of burnout. Further understanding of the potential risk factors for burnout is necessary to minimize and prevent burnout among practicing otolaryngologists.

Background: Nursing burnout is an important problem that affects nurses’ wellness, the quality of care and the health institutions. Study aims were to estimate levels of burnout; to determine the phase of burnout experienced by nurses in the medical area; to analyse the relationship between burnout and personality and psychological factors. Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional, multicentre study. Hospitals from eight cities were included. The study sample was n = 301 nurses, working in the medical area of hospitals in the Andalusian Health Service during the second semester of 2017. Sociodemographic, occupational and personality variables were studied using the Revised NEO Personality Inventory together with the Educational-Clinical Questionnaire: Anxiety and Depression, and burnout was measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results: Almost 40% of the nurses presented high levels of burnout. The three burnouts (emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment) presented statistically significant correlations with the personality factors of neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness, and also with the scores recorded for anxiety and depression. Multiple linear regression models showed agreeableness and depression to be statistically significant predictors of all dimensions of the syndrome. Conclusion: Hospital nurses working in the medical area in Andalusia experience high levels of burnout.

Objective: to understand the present situation of job burnout among medical interns and to explore its major influencing factors. Methods: A stratified random sampling was used to select 1268 medical interns from 6 full-time medical colleges in Guangdong province. They were investigated with Maslach Burnout Inventor-General Survey, (MBI–GS), Questionnaire on Humanistic Care Ability of Medical Students (QHCAMS) and a self-compiled personal information questionnaire. Results: (1) The incidence of job burnout in this group was 98.40%. The total score of MBI–GS and the scores of emotional exhaustion, cynicism and reduced personal accomplishment were (45.27 ±12.61), (16.21 ±4.91), (12.91 ±3.93) and (18.15 ±5.22), respectively. (2) The result of multiple stepwise linear regression showed that gender, specialty, type of internship hospital, working department and average length of overtime per day were positively correlated with the total score of MBI-GS (β =.154~.676, all P < 0.01). Nine factors, such as self-evaluation of health status, ability to solve problems at work, relationship with patients, classmates and medical staff, as well as the scores of hope, honesty, humility and courage in HQCAMS, were negatively correlated with the total score of MBI-GS (β =-.148~-.468, all P < 0.01). Conclusion: Medical interns are suffering serious job burnouts, which may be related to work pressure, personal quality and other factors.

BackgroundPhysician burnout may be at ‘epidemic’ proportions due to factors associated with modern healthcare practice and technology. Practice attributes vary appreciably among subspecialists. Understanding burnout incidence and its associated factors could illuminate potential causes and interventions. We evaluated burnFout, mental and physical health, and social support and coping skills in acute and chronic pain physicians and pediatric and cardiac anesthesiologists.MethodsWe administered the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), a two-item self-identified burnout measure, the Veterans RAND 12-item Health Survey and the Social Support and Personal Coping Survey to subspecialty society members practicing acute and chronic pain management, pediatric anesthesiology and cardiac anesthesiology. Multivariable regression analysis compared the groups, and adjusted burnout prevalence was compared with an all-physician and an employed general population sample.ResultsAmong 1303 participants (response rates 21.6%–35.6% among the subspecialty groups), 43.4% met established burnout criteria (range 30.0%–62.3%). Chronic pain physicians had significantly worse scores (unadjusted) than the other three groups of subspecialty anesthesiologists, the all-physician comparator group and the general population comparator group. Mental health inversely correlated with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization in all groups. Self-identified burnout correlated with the full MBI-HSS (R=0.54; positive predictive value of 0.939 (0.917, 0.955)). Physicians’ scores for personal accomplishment were higher than population norms.ConclusionsThis study provides data on burnout prevalence and associated demographic, health and social factors in subspecialist anesthesiologists. Chronic pain anesthesiologists had significantly greater burnout than the other groups. The self-identified burnout metric performed well and may be an attractive alternative to the full MBI-HSS.

Psychological stress can be viewed as occurring when demands exceed an individual's adaptive capacity. Burnout is an occupational syndrome defined by three dimensions, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and feelings of low personal accomplishment. Factors related to the nature of the physiotherapy practice, in which health care is provided to patients under painful experiences and chronical conditions, to aspects related to emotional fatigue brought by interpersonal exchanges or physical exhaustion due to staff shortage, within an increasingly demanding health care system, expose physiotherapists to a higher risk of burnout and few studies have examined burnout in this specific setting. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of burnout in Portuguese physiotherapists and to explore possible associations between burnout and demographic and work-related variables. Significant but weak association was found between age and emotional exhaustion, and between clinical experience and emotional exhaustion and global burnout score. Weak association was also found between the number of treated patients daily and daily working hours and physical fatigue and global burnout. Workload was associated with significantly higher scores of physical fatigue, cognitive weariness and global burnout. The prevalence of burnout was not high but significant differences were found in the prevalence of physical fatigue between the group with low workload and high workload. Emotional exhaustion was the most relevant predictor of the global burnout score. In conclusion, the results suggest that the prevalence of burnout in Portuguese physiotherapists is not very high, however, workload seems to place these professionals at a higher risk of developing burnout.

Abstract Background Burnout, “a psychological syndrome of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and reduced personal accomplishment (PA),” is a well-described problem in the medical community. National surveys report 45% of practicing physicians and 60% of residents and fellows are burnt out. A longitudinal study of medical students and residents reported 45% burnout, as well as career choice regret in 14% of trainees. There are little data about burnout in Infectious Diseases (ID) physicians, including fellows. We sought to measure burnout prevalence in an academic ID Division, identify factors that modified the risk of burnout, and assess knowledge and attitudes about fellow and faculty burnout in the division. Methods The study population included 33 ID physicians (10 fellows, 23 faculties). Level of burnout was assessed via the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), a validated 22-item tool. An additional survey was distributed as a needs assessment to determine participant understanding of “burnout” and “wellness,” ability to recognize burnout in colleagues, attitudes about the scope of the problem, and specific programmatic and personal factors felt to contribute to burnout. Results The MBI was completed by 10 fellows and 16 faculties (76%). A high score in ≥ 1 domain of burnout was reported in 50% of respondents, and 19% received a high score in both EE and DP. Fellows had moderate to high levels of EE (90%) and DP (70%), though all fellows reported at least a moderate sense of PA. The survey needs assessment was completed by 9 fellows and 17 faculties (79%). In a hypothetical case, 100% and 58% of participants correctly identified elements of DP and EE, respectively. Respondents identified several factors contributing to burnout risk, most commonly being lack of schedule autonomy (100%), increasing patient load (96%), and inability to attend teaching conferences (88%). Fellows felt burnt out when seeing ≥ 4 new consults per day and/or carrying a census of 10–11 patients. Conclusion ID fellows at an academic medical center recognize burnout and report levels on par with national data. Fellows and faculty can identify personal and programmatic factors that increase and decrease their risk of burnout. These data can guide programmatic and divisional interventions to improve trainee wellness. Disclosures All Authors: No reported Disclosures.

PURPOSE: Burnout in the medical workforce leads to early retirement, absenteeism, career changes, financial losses for medical institutions, and adverse outcomes for patients. Recent literature has explored burnout in different specialties of medicine. This article examines burnout among medical oncology trainees and identifies factors associated with burnout and professional dissatisfaction, including socioeconomic factors. METHODS: US medical oncology programs were sent a survey that included the Maslach Burnout Index–Human Services Survey as well as demographic, socioeconomic, and program-specific questions tailored to medical oncology fellowship. Primary binary end points included burnout, satisfaction with being a physician, and satisfaction with being a medical oncologist. Binomial logistic models determined associations between various characteristics and end points. RESULTS: Overall, 261 US fellows completed the survey. Seventy percent of international medical graduates reported no educational debt, whereas only 36% of US graduates reported no educational debt. Eighty-two percent of survey respondents reported their mother had at least a bachelor’s degree, and 87% of respondents reported their father had at least a bachelor’s degree. At least 27% of respondents had symptoms of burnout. Factors inversely associated with burnout on multivariable analysis included having a mother who graduated college (odds ratio [OR], 0.27), reporting an adequate perceived balance between work and personal life (OR, 0.22), feeling that faculty care about educational success (OR, 0.16), and being in the final year of training (OR, 0.45). Having debt ≥ $150,000 (OR, 2.14) was directly associated with burnout. CONCLUSION: Symptoms of burnout are common among medical oncology fellows and are associated with educational debt and socioeconomic factors.

Objectives: This study aims to identify the prevalence of burnout and associated factors in Brazilian medical students. Methods: In the largest medical school from Central Brazil, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey and a socio-demographic questionnaire were adopted in this cross-sectional study. Correlations among the three dimensions of burnout were verified. Results: The evaluation of 399 students revealed a frequency of 12.0% of burnout. Women had a higher rate of burnout (8.0%) than men (4.0%). The fifth period had the higher frequency of burnout (27.1%), while the seventh grade had the lower frequency (2.1%). The students showed high scores only in emotional exhaustion (63.2%). Between the dimensions “emotional exhaustion” and “disbelief” found a significant correlation. Conclusion: The fifth period of the Medicine course and the female gender are the most affected by burnout syndrome and therefore, the preventive actions to reduce stress among medical students should be directed mainly at these higher risk categories. The low burnout rate found in our study can attest that the PBL methodology and medical schools strategically located to meet regional demand may represent strategies for the prevention of burnout among medical students.

Introduction: Burnout is a psychological syndrome involving physical depletion, feelings of helplessness, negative self-concept, and negative attitudes towards work, life, and others. Burnout is a problem among health care professionals and nurses are found to be vulnerable. It is associated with a decrease in occupational well-being and increase in absenteeism, turnover and illness. Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with burnout among nurses at International Hospital Kampala (IHK).Methods: Analytical cross-sectional design was used. Data was collected from a sample of 120 nurses using questionnaire and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) tools. Analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences and Microsoft excel. Results: The prevalence of burnout within the MBI subscales was highest in the subscale of personal accomplishment (PA) - 72.5%), followed by Depersonalization (DP) – 66.8% and Emotional Exhaustion (EE) - 61.7%. Overall prevalence of burnout among was 66.95%. Nurses with high burnout had the lowest level of personal accomplishment-18.33% while nurses with low burnout had the highest level of personal accomplishment-72.5%. Age (X2(2) =6.670, p=0.036) was associated with burnout. Respondent years in service was more highly associated with burnout (X2(2) = 10.961, p=0.004). Job satisfaction (X2(1) = 4.361, p=0.037) was associated with burnout. Emotional Exhaustion (EE) of the respondents (X2(2) =29.197, p=0.000) was associated with burnout. Many nurses, 61(50.8%) had EE and burnout. Depersonalization (DP) (X2(2) =72.803, p=0.000) was also associated with burnout. Hours worked in a day (X2(1) =72.803, p=0.016) was associated with burnout. Getting social support at work (X2(1) =72.803, p=0.016) was associated with burnout, thus 48(40.0%) of the nurses who got social support had burnout. Conclusion: The prevalence of burnout is quite high among nurses.

Objective: To evaluate factors potentially associated with burnout in Brazilian physicians and medical students. Methods: In this cross-sectional online survey, participants were evaluated in October 2019 regarding sociodemographic, personal, work-related, and mental health factors. Different phases of medical careers and work settings were represented. Burnout symptoms were assessed by means of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The most common cut-off points were used for emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA). The total scores of these dimensions were used as dependent variables in order to assess the risk factors for each burnout dimension. Results: 2,486 participants were included in the study. The mean age was 38.92 years (SD = 12.64), 62.8% were female, and 39.9% declared themselves as burned out. EE was present in 59.3%, DP in 45.5%, and low PA in 33.1% of the sample. Workload, age, sex, work environment, psychiatric history, quality of the relationships with family and friends, leisure and physical activity were all associated with burnout. Those participants who reported that they were not undergoing any type of psychological treatment, but nevertheless felt like they should be in treatment, actually had more symptoms. Burnout was also related to having suicidal ideation in the last month and to alcohol abuse. Conclusion: In addition to individual risk factors, this study shows the importance of characteristics of the work environment such as fostering cooperation, empathy and shared values between superiors, institutions, and physicians. Also, stigma and the barriers to seeking care appear as an important issue, as well as the association between burnout, alcohol abuse, and suicidal ideation.

Introduction. The presence of burnout syndrome in health workers has an impact on the effectiveness of their professional activities. Objective. Identification of actors of burnout in physicians of polyclinic institutions. Materials and methods. The study involved 62 general practitioners from the polyclinic institutions of the city of Arkhangelsk. There were used such methods as “The questionnaire for burnout detection” (K. Maslach); questionnaire “ Attitude to work and professional “burnout” by V.A. Vinokur; test “11 personality factors”; technique “Coping behavior in stressful situations” by T.L. Kryukova; profile A. Meyer for the study of organizational conditions, job satisfaction and professional development; questionnaire on socio-demographic characteristics. Results. 72.5% of physicians were established to be characterized by a high level of professional burnout. The most significant contribution to the development of burnout is made by components such as low self-esteem of both overall health and adaptation, emotional exhaustion and professional perfectionism. Socio-demographic factors of burnout in physicians include: age (35 years), the lack of children, work experience in the specialty (average - 10 years), the number of received patients per day (up to 10 and more than 41 patient), the lack of additional work in the hospital; personal factors: the low level of the sensitiveness, moral flexibility, the use of emotionally-focused coping and search for social support; organizational factors: dissatisfaction with the content of professional activity, the presence of frustration at work, dissatisfaction with wages, lack of possibility of training and further professional development, as well as tiring working conditions. Conclusion. For 2/3 of physicians of polyclinic institutions show the high levels of burnout manifested by low self-esteem of both overall health and adaptation, emotional exhaustion and professional perfectionism. The appearance of burnout syndrome among physicians is influenced by socio-demographic, personal and organizational factors.

Background The American Society of Hematology and researchers at the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity at the George Washington University are conducting a 3-year study of the hematology workforce to understand factors that influence the supply of hematology services in the U.S. The Survey of Practicing Hematologists and Oncologists focuses on practicing hematology/oncology physicians' practice activities and experiences, compensation, job satisfaction and burnout. While the prevalence and predictors of burnout in the oncology workforce have been studied in detail previously, less is known about factors associated with burnout in the hematology or combined hematology/oncology workforce--or whether these differ across academic and community practice settings. This study seeks to examine factors associated with severe burnout for hematology/oncology physicians in academic and community practice settings using data from a large-scale, comprehensive survey of hematology/oncology physicians. Methods We collected survey data via mail and online survey (using Qualtrics, an online survey tool) in April through June 2019. The survey included questions about hematology/oncology physicians' work hours, practice activities, compensation, job satisfaction and burnout. This analysis uses data from a single validated question examining respondents' level of burnout: "Overall, based on your definition of burnout, how would you rate your level of burnout?" The question asks respondents to rank their burnout on a 5-point Likert scale. We collapsed responses into a dichotomous variable indicating severe burnout (=4 or 5 on the Likert scale). We used two weighted multiple logistic regression models to examine associations between severe burnout and work hours, practice characteristics and activities, and type of compensation for respondents in academic and community practice in Stata 15, controlling for demographics and type of practice (p<0.05=statistically significant). Results A total of 675 hematologists/oncologists completed the survey (27% response rate). Of these, 427 respondents reported working in academic or community practice and had complete data to be included in the analysis: 162 (38%) in academic practice settings and 265 (62%) in community practice settings. Respondents in academic practice settings were slightly less likely to report experiencing severe burnout than those in community practice settings (9% [15/162] vs. 12% [34/265], p=0.26). In the logistic regression models, we found statistically significant and positive association between severe burnout and Relative Value Unit or RVU-based compensation (vs. salaried or other compensation models) for both academic (OR=18.42, p<0.01) and community practice respondents (OR=3.05, p<0.01). We also found a significant and positive association between severe burnout and being female for respondents in academic practice only (OR=6.07, p<0.01). We found a significant and negative association between severe burnout and often working with advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants) for respondents in community practice only (OR=0.32, p<0.01). Conclusions Study findings suggest that severe burnout rates are similar for hematology/oncology physicians in academic and community practice settings. Severe burnout appears to be related to use of RVU-based compensation systems in both academic and community practices, suggesting that these models may require major revision to reduce burnout and support the health and longevity in practice of hematology/oncology physicians. Improving access to advanced practice providers may mitigate severe burnout, especially in community practice settings. Higher levels of burnout among women in academic hematology/oncology practices suggest an area for further research into possible explanations and solutions. These findings merit further exploration, particularly given the increased pressures on physicians in the era of COVID-19. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Objectives. Emergency department (ED) professionals are exposed to burnout syndrome due to excessive workload and high demands for care. The objective of our study was to assess the prevalence burnout among all ED staff and to determine associated factors. Methods. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 3 EDs. The data were collected using a standardized questionnaire. It included demographical and occupational data, general health questions, burnout level (Maslach Burnout Inventory), job strain (Karasek), and quality of life (Medical Outcome Study Short Form). Results. Of the 529 professionals working in EDs, 379 responses were collected (participation rate of 71.6%). Emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP), the major components of burnout, were reported, respectively, by 15.8% and 29.6% of the professionals. Burnout prevalence was 34.6%, defined as a severely abnormal level of either EE or DP. The medical category was significantly more affected by the burnout compared with their colleagues: nearly one ED physician out of two had a burnout (50.7%). In the multivariate analysis of covariance, job strain and a low mental component score were the two main factors independently associated with burnout (p < 0.05). Conclusion. The results of our study show that ED professionals are a vulnerable group. Preventive approaches to stress and burnout are needed to promote quality of work life.

IntroductionTeachers are confronted with increasing difficulties and demands that make them vulnerable to burnout.AimsTo evaluate burnout among a population of Tunisian teachers and to identify factors that may be involved.MethodsIt was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytic study, involving 165 teachers working in 10 primary schools and 7 high schools in Sfax, Tunisia. The participants completed a self-questionnaire containing their socio-demographic and professional characteristics. They were explored by the scale of the burnout: Le Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey (MBI-GS).ResultsThe mean age of teachers was 39.96 years. The sex ratio (M:F) was 1.32. The majority (75.2%) was married. The burnout syndrome was found in 49.7% of teachers. Moderate burnout was found in 43% of cases and severe burnout in 6.7%. The causes of burnout reported by our population were bad working conditions (71.50%), quality of working relationships (65.5%) and overload work (30.3%). Bad working conditions were associated with a high level of emotional exhaustion (P < 0.005) and a low level of professional efficacy (P < 0.001), while poor quality of work relationships and overload work were associated to a high score on cynicism (P < 0.001) and a low score on professional efficacy (P < 0.001).ConclusionAccording to our study, poor working conditions, overload work and bad quality of relationships seem to be risk factors of burnout in teachers. Preventive measures should be instituted against those factors to reduce the constraints of work and improve the professional quality of life of these individuals, essential thing to optimize the educational level in our country.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Background Physician burnout, widespread across medicine, is linked to poorer physician quality of life and reduced quality of care. Data on prevalence of and risk factors for burnout among anesthesiologists are limited. The objective of the current study was to improve understanding of burnout in anesthesiologists, identify workplace and personal factors associated with burnout among anesthesiologists, and quantify their strength of association. Methods During March 2020, the authors surveyed member anesthesiologists of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey. Additional survey questions queried workplace and personal factors. The primary research question was to assess rates of high risk for burnout (scores of at least 27 on the emotional exhaustion subscale and/or at least 10 on the depersonalization subscale of the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey) and burnout syndrome (demonstrating all three burnout dimensions, consistent with the World Health Organization definition). The secondary research question was to identify associated risk factors. Results Of 28,677 anesthesiologists contacted, 13.6% (3,898) completed the survey; 59.2% (2,307 of 3,898) were at high risk of burnout, and 13.8% (539 of 3,898) met criteria for burnout syndrome. On multivariable analysis, perceived lack of support at work (odds ratio, 6.7; 95% CI, 5.3 to 8.5); working greater than or equal to 40 h/week (odds ratio, 2.22; 95% CI, 1.80 to 2.75); lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual status (odds ratio, 2.21; 95% CI, 1.35 to 3.63); and perceived staffing shortages (odds ratio, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.76 to 2.42) were independently associated with high risk for burnout. Perceived lack of support at work (odds ratio, 10.0; 95% CI, 5.4 to 18.3) and home (odds ratio, 2.13; 95% CI, 1.69 to 2.69) were most strongly associated with burnout syndrome. Conclusions The prevalence of burnout among anesthesiologists is high, with workplace factors weighing heavily. The authors identified risk factors for burnout, especially perceived support in the workplace, where focused interventions may be effective in reducing burnout. OBJECTIVEExcessive dissatisfaction and stress among physicians can precipitate burnout, which results in diminished productivity, quality of care, and patient satisfaction and treatment adherence. Given the multiplicity of its harms and detriments to workforce retention and in light of the growing physician shortage, burnout has garnered much attention in recent years. Using a national survey, the authors formally evaluated burnout among neurosurgery trainees.METHODSAn 86-item questionnaire was disseminated to residents in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons database between June and November 2015. Questions evaluated personal and workplace stressors, mentorship, career satisfaction, and burnout. Burnout was assessed using the previously validated Maslach Burnout Inventory. Factors associated with burnout were determined using univariate and multivariate logistic regression.RESULTSThe response rate with completed surveys was 21% (346/1643). The majority of residents were male (78%), 26–35 years old (92%), in a stable relationship (70%), and without children (73%). Respondents were equally distributed across all residency years. Eighty-one percent of residents were satisfied with their career choice, although 41% had at some point given serious thought to quitting. The overall burnout rate was 67%. In the multivariate analysis, notable factors associated with burnout included inadequate operating room exposure (OR 7.57, p = 0.011), hostile faculty (OR 4.07, p = 0.008), and social stressors outside of work (OR 4.52, p = 0.008). Meaningful mentorship was protective against burnout in the multivariate regression models (OR 0.338, p = 0.031).CONCLUSIONSRates of burnout and career satisfaction are paradoxically high among neurosurgery trainees. While several factors were predictive of burnout, including inadequate operative exposure and social stressors, meaningful mentorship proved to be protective against burnout. The documented negative effects of burnout on patient care and health care economics necessitate further studies for potential solutions to curb its rise.

Background: Knowing the organizational factors that predict burnout in perioperative nurses is paramount for improving the care of patients and promoting nurses’ psychosocial well-being and health. Objective: To determine the influence of organizational factors of the perioperative nurse's work environment on the three burnout dimensions: emotional exhaustion, despersonalization, and personal accomplishment. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 136 nurses in a perioperative care unit at a university hospital in Barcelona, Spain. Data were collected using a demographic data form, and the Spanish versions of the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index and Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results: Findings showed emotional exhaustion in 43% (56) of nurses, depersonalization in 21% (28), and reduced personal accomplisment in 53% (69). The degree of general burnout was moderate. The work environment was considered unfavourable as only one factor of five was favourable (Nursing foundations of quality care). Multiple regression analyses showed three organizational factors were associated with all three dimensions of burnout: “Nurse manager ability, leadership, and support of nurses”; “Staffing and resources adequacy”; and “Nursing foundations of quality care”. Conclusions: In this study three organizational factors played a significant role in predicting burnout among perioperative nurses. We recommend hospital management implement policies to improve these organizational factors. Promoting positive leadership styles, providing necessary resources, and creating a positive climate in the work environment could increase psychosocial wellbeing and decrease burnout among perioperative nurses.

This study predicted Burnout from the self-care practices, compassion satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress, and organizational factors among chaplains who participated from all 50 states (N = 534). A hierarchical regression model indicated that the combined effect of compassion satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress, mindful self-care, demographic, and organizational factors explained 83.2% of the variance in Burnout. Chaplains serving in a hospital were slightly more at risk for Burnout than those in hospice or other settings. Organizational factors that most predicted Burnout were feeling bogged down by the “system” (25.7%) and an overwhelming caseload (19.9%). Each self-care category was a statistically significant protective factor against Burnout risk. The strongest protective factors against Burnout in order of strength were self-compassion and purpose, supportive structure, mindful self-awareness, mindful relaxation, supportive relationships, and physical care. For secondary traumatic stress, supportive structure, mindful self-awareness, and self-compassion and purpose were the strongest protective factors. Chaplains who engaged in multiple and frequent self-care strategies experienced higher professional quality of life and low Burnout risk. In the chaplain’s journey toward wellness, a reflective practice of feeling good about doing good and mindful self-care are vital. The significance, implications, and limitations of the study were discussed.

The purpose of this study was to examine the burnout experienced by a sample of Greek teachers and to explore the extent to which certain organizational factors predict teachers' scores on the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The sample consisted of 100 teachers, 28 to 59 years of age. Greek teachers' means were lower than those for burnout of U.S. teachers. Stepwise regression analysis identified satisfaction with the job itself was the only significant predictor for Depersonalization and Emotional Exhaustion subscales, while satisfaction with the job itself and satisfaction with promotion were significant predictors for the Personal Accomplishment subscale. These findings showed that stress, e.g., role conflict and role ambiguity, were not highly correlated with teachers' burnout.

Background. Burnout syndrome has reached epidemic levels among physicians (reported around 50%). Anesthesiology is among the most stressful medical disciplines but there is paucity of literature as compared with others. Analysis of burnout is essential because it is associated with safety and quality of care. We summarize evidence on burnout in anesthesiology. Methods. We conducted a systematic review (MEDLINE up to 30.06.2017). We included studies reporting burnout in anesthesiology with no restriction on role or screening test used. Results. Fifteen surveys/studies described burnout in anesthesiology, including different workers profiles (nurses, residents, consultants, and directors). All studies used the Maslach Burnout Inventory test but with significant differences for risk stratification. Burnout prevalence greatly varied across studies (10%–41% high risk, up to 59% at least moderate risk). Factors most consistently associated with burnout were strained working pattern, working as younger consultant, and having children. There was no consistent relationship between burnout and hospital characteristics, gender, or marital status. Conclusions. Burnout prevalence among anesthesiologists is relatively high across career stages, and some risk factors are reported frequently. However, the small number of studies as well as the large differences in their methodology and in reporting approach warrants further research in this field.

Traditionally teacher's profession is associated with high levels of burnout. However the scope of the study is to differentiate the role of personality in experiencing burnout. In this paper is presented the exploration of the relationship between teacher's burnout syndrome, some personality traits and locus of control. The sample comprised of 120 teachers distributed by gender as follow 76.6% (N=92) women and 23.3% (N=28) men. To investigate the relationship between the personality characteristics (extraversion-introversion, neuroticism, psychoticism, and loci of control) and the levels of burnout syndrome dimensions (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment) a Spearmen correlation analysis was performed. To determine which one of all personality characteristics would have the most significant influence on the burnout syndrome dimensions data were verified with eta squared coefficient. As predicted by the research suggestions the study's results showed significant correlations between teacher's burnout syndrome and personality traits - intro/extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism, and locus of control. It has been revealed that neuroticism and intro/extroversion have the greatest effect on all three burnout dimensions (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal achievements). Localization of control as variable predicting burnout showed a moderate effect on two out of three factors (emotional exhaustion and reduced personal achievements). With the lowest effect influencing, only emotional exhaustion was found to be psychoticism. Keywords: burnout syndrome, teacher's occupational stress, personality traits, locus of control.

Introduction: As the job climate continues to change, many perfusionists are faced with high employee turnover rates, working longer hours, and increased stress related to more complex surgeries. Understanding the sources of professional burnout and stress may allow the formulation of a strategy to help prevent such negative outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine the current level of stress and burnout among perfusionists. Methods: A questionnaire was constructed with the use of SurveyMonkey®. Invitations requesting participation in the survey were distributed by electronic mail to members of PerfList and PerfMail. To assess burnout, components of the well-established Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) tool were used. Results: At p<0.05, job demand variables such as stress level, conflict, call duties, hours worked, and case load were all shown to have a statistically significant relationship to burnout. Conclusion: The study found that, among the various factors, job demands were the most likely culprit contributing to burnout. Stress level and conflict, in particular, had the strongest association to burnout.

The article is devoted to the study of burnout, which is interpreted as the inability to perform professional duties at the proper level due to prolonged physical and/or mental overload. The main content of the study is to determine the possibilities of prevention of professional burnout of a social worker in order to ensure his physical and mental health.Scientific opinions and positions on the relevance, purpose, multifaceted nature, content of prevention, objective and subjective factors of prevention, differences in organizational and psychological and pedagogical influences of prevention, the specifics of social prevention and prevention. As well as the impact on the professional activities of social norms and deviations from norms, values, responsibilities. The causes of burnout can be differentiated by the nature of the determination. Among the main groups of determinants – social, medical, biological, psychological. The conducted survey among social specialists on the state of professional burnout revealed certain tendencies and regularities among them. This was evidenced by statistics relating to the factors influencing the professional burnout of the specialist, as well as their dynamics. The basis of professional activity should be to provide conditions for this. However, collective life, in addition to having advantages, is also endowed with negative features. Indicators of collective distress that have a direct impact on the professional burnout of an individual member of the team are identified. These include problems and / or lack of corporate culture; dissatisfaction with the psychological atmosphere prevailing in the team; presence of conflict situations, quarrels, intrigue; absence or problems of interpersonal communication in the team, division into groups; low level of mutual assistance and support, unwillingness to maintain friendly relations; no punishment for guilt, reaction to negative behavior of colleagues, control over subjective factors; lack of prospects for team development; lack of conditions for personal development and formation; lack of measures to prevent occupational burnout. For comparison, the experimental study involved people who did not suffer from burnout and people who survived the state of burnout. Thus, people who have experienced a state of burnout have much deeper psycho-emotional disorders. Their professional experience is characterized by significant negative experiences and beliefs. Positive corporate social ties have been disrupted in their lives, which can lead to disruption in other areas: family, personal, spiritual and emotional. That is, it causes a number of other shifts. Certain trends are evidenced by statistics on the assessment of the existing risks of burnout, which concern specialists in various fields: almost all recognized the fact of burnout to varying degrees; the vast majority of respondents assess the ability to perform professional duties generally well, but the lack of an absolute answer also indicates the risks involved; mostly the presence of risks of burnout is assessed indirectly. On the basis of statistical indicators of occupational burnout, their dynamics can be distinguished victim groups. Given the classification of propensity to burnout, prevention technologies can be used. In each of the three cases, the approach will be different. It is established that a special place is occupied by the subjective factor of professional activity. Professional burnout is caused by various factors: social and organizational conditions of functioning of collective, legislative and normative-organizational maintenance of process of work; individual and personal qualities of personality, stress resistance, motivation of activity; compliance of qualities and personality traits with the requirements of the chosen profession, professional competence; ability to work in a team, ability to take into account the opinions and positions of others, sociability; availability of life, professional experience; psychological compatibility of individual team members; ability to control the situation in the team by management; corporate culture, the presence of common interests and activities, interest in the development and prosperity of the team. Theoretical analysis and experimental study of problems related to burnout indicate the presence of risks in the professional activities of professionals from different social structures. That is, it depends not so much on objective factors as on the subjective attitude of the individual to himself and his mental and physical health. And the problem looks not so much psychological as psychological and pedagogical.

Burnout syndrome is common among healthcare professions, including resident physicians. We aimed to assess the prevalence of burnout among resident physicians in Jordan, and a secondary aim was to evaluate the risk factors associated with the development of burnout syndrome in those residents, including gender, working hours, psychological distress, training sector, and specialty. In this cross-sectional study, 481 residents were recruited utilizing multistage stratified sampling to represent the four major health sectors in Jordan. Data were collected using an online questionnaire, where the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) was used to assess the prevalence of burnout. The prevalence, group differences, and predictors of burnout were statistically analyzed using STATA 15. Overall, 373 (77.5%) residents were found to have burnout. Factors associated with higher levels of burnout were psychological stress (β = 2.34, CI = [1.88–2.81]), longer working hours (β = 4.07, CI = [0.52–7.62], for 51–75 h a week, β = 7.27, CI = [2.86–11.69], for 76–100 h a week and β = 7.27, CI = [0.06–14.49], for >100 h a week), and obstetrics/gynecology residents (β = 9.66, CI = [3.59–15.73]). Conversely, medical sub-specialty residents, as well as private and university hospital residents, had lower burnout levels. We concluded that decreasing the workload on residents, offering psychological counseling, and promoting a safety culture for residents might help in mitigating burnout consequences.

Method: This cross-sectional study involved 18 years or older caretakers of children with neurological illness for more than 3 months duration. They were recruited from Paediatric Neurology outpatient clinics over a period of 3 months from July to October 2019 at a general hospital in the state of Kelantan, Malaysia. Each caretaker was given a set of questionnaires that included General Stressor Questionnaire (GSQ) which was translated into Malay version ‘Soal Selidik Umum (SSU)’, Copenhagen Burnout Inventory-Malay version (CBI-M) and Demographic Information Form. Results: Overall, only 20 caretakers had mean score of 50 or higher in all component in CBI-M, making the prevalence of total burnout among the caretakers of 8.3% (95% CI = 5.2%, 12.6%). Personal burnout involved 78 caretakers (32.5%, 95% CI = 26.6%, 38.8%), 42 caretakers with client-related burnout (17.5%, 95% CI = 12.9%, 22.9%) and 11 caretakers had work-related burnout (4.6%, 95% CI = 2.3%, 8.1%). Most common stressors were performance pressure, work-family conflict and poor job prospects. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that family stressors, types of children’s neurological illness and number of household occupants were associated with personal burnout, client-related burnout and total burnout in their caretakers. Conclusions: Prevalence of total burnout among the caretakers was low, but personal burnout was prominent. Caretakers of children with genetic illness, cerebral palsy and autism had higher prevalence of burnout compared to other chronic neurological illness.

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of burnout and associated factors among family medicine residents in Thailand. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by all Thai Family Medicine residents year 1 to 3 during February 2019. Self-reported questionnaires, including demographic data, and the Thai version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory were distributed to 703 residents via electronic transmissions, including e-mail, Facebook, and Line instant communication application. Burnout was diagnosed by the following criteria: high-level emotional exhaustion, high-level depersonalization, and low-level personal accomplishment. Factors associated with burnout were explored by the univariate logistic regression model. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to examine the independent risk factors of burnout among Thai Family Medicine residents. Results: There were 149 residents who participated in this study, with a response rate of 21% (n = 703). As no residents diagnosed with burnout using the proposed criteria, burnout was, therefore, redefined as residents reporting high-level emotional exhaustion and high-level depersonalization. The prevalence of burnout in family medicine residents in this study was 10.74% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 6.26%-16.85%). Our study found that having relationship problems with patients, having relationship problems with colleagues, and having thought of resigning from the training program were independently associated with burnout with odds ratios of 6.93 (95% CI: 1.64-29.27), 6.31 (95% CI: 1.89-21.12), and 4.16 (95% CI: 1.09-15.81), respectively. Conclusions: Burnout at high level in emotional exhaustion and high level in depersonalization can occur among family medicine residents. Concerning factors were found to be patient and colleague relationship problems and having thought of resigning from the residency program. Other factors that may contribute to burnout were type of training programs, insufficient income, and family relationship. We recommend that the training institute should be able to monitor residents’ stress level and to help prevent those who have burnout and reduce its impact.

(1) Background: The heavy workload and understaffed personnel of village doctors is a challenge to the rural healthcare system in China. Previous studies have documented the predictors of doctors’ burnout; however, little attention has been paid to village doctors. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and influential factors of burnout among village doctors. (2) Methods: Data was collected by a self-administered questionnaire from 1248 village doctors who had worked at rural clinics for more than a year. Burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) with three dimensions—emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). A logistic regression model was applied to estimate the influential factors of burnout. (3) Results: The prevalence of overall burnout was 23.6%. Being male (OR = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.41–0.82), poor health status (OR = 0.80, 95%CI: 0.67–0.94), low income (OR = 0.62, 95%CI: 0.40–0.95), and a poor doctor–patient relationship (OR = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.48–0.67) were significantly related to burnout. Conclusion: Burnout is prevalent among Chinese village doctors. Policies such as increasing village doctors’ income and investing more resources in rural healthcare system should be carried out to mitigate and prevent burnout.

Despite the growing participation of Mexican women in the workforce, women are generally responsible for childcare to a greater extent than men, leading to higher Burnout Outcomes from role overload in working mothers than fathers. The present cross-sectional correlational study sought to find the effects of Having Children and Relationship Status on Burnout Outcomes in a sample of 1,447 working women and men from Mexico City and how these effects if any at all, vary according to sex. An initial analysis showed that participants with children benefited from lower Exhaustion, Dissatisfaction, and Averaged Burnout, but a MANOVA failed to find any significant interaction effects between Sex and Having Children. Relationship status alone could not explain Burnout outcomes, but when analyzed in interaction with Having Children, partnered mothers showed, counterintuitively, higher levels of Exhaustion, Dissatisfaction, and Averaged Burnout than single mothers. Possible explanations and implications are discussed.

Background and aims We studied teacher burnout and its relationship with job demands and resources, collective self-efficacy, and social support. Previous studies indicate that the factors of burnout (depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and reduced personal accomplishment) develop in work environment where demands exceed resources, and where social support and collective self-efficacy are both perceived to be low. Methods Online survey method was used (N = 664) in this study. Organizational and social context was measured using the job demands and resources model, and measuring perceived collective self-efficacy of the workplace and social support of the coworkers. Results Based on the results of correlation analysis, different types of job demands are associated positively with burnout, while job resources, collective self-efficacy, and social support prove to have negative relationship with burnout. The ratio of demands and resources (workload index) also has a strong link to burnout scores. Using linear regression analysis to build a model revealed professional social support, possibility of personal development and job demands as significant predictors of burnout. Discussion These findings emphasize the importance of professional social support in the prevention of burnout. The results indicate that training programs which strengthen social support between coworkers are much needed, and that school psychologists can help teachers to develop more supportive communities.

Background:Burnout syndrome represents a factual risk for school teachers during their career. Several factors have been analyzed as stress sources enabled to menace teachers’ general well-being; nevertheless, protective factors mostly related to their personal resources may differently characterize teachers’ profiles. Objectives:The current study aimed to define different teachers’ profiles based on their burnout levels and attitudes towards job (i.e., job satisfaction, self-efficacy, attitudes toward professional growth, collective efficacy, positive and negative emotions, and hedonic balance).attitudes towards jobMethods:Participants were 266 school teachers (F=69.1%) ranging from 26 to 65 years old (M=48.95; SD=8.31), with teaching experience ranged from 1 to 41 years (M=21.72; SD=10.36). Data were collected by three self-report questionnaires: Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, Attitudes towards job questionnaires, School Collective efficacy. Results:Cluster analysis approach showed two distinct teacher's profiles named at-risk and non at-risk teachers. Main differences were due to burnout levels, attitudes toward job and extra-mansions at work. No differences were found related to teachers' socio-demographic characteristics and their years of experience. Conclusions:The two teachers’ profiles resulting from the cluster analysis show several similarities, including collective efficacy and job satisfaction levels. Results are discussed in relation as to how teachers’ positive emotions towards their job can work as protective factors against the risk of burnout.

AbstractThe semiconductor plants on the top of high-tech industrial chain hire many packaging workers to carry out miscellaneous packing tasks for various product orders from different companies and countries. Under tremendous workload the quality of life (QoL) of such packaging workers need to be concerned. The aim of this study was to explore factors influencing their QoL. This study recruited 247 packing workers (162 male and 85 female; mean age: 35.6 years old) in 2015 and 2016 from a semiconductor plant in Taiwan by convenience sampling. The questionnaire comprised four parts: demographics, the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF), an occupational burnout inventory and the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. The four domains of the WHOQOL-BREF were defined as outcome variables. Predictive factors included gender (reference: male), age (reference: ≤ 35), BMI (reference: ≤ 25), educational level (reference: below university), marital/partner status (reference: married/cohabiting), years of work (reference: ≤ 5), work shift (reference: day shift), personal burnout, work-related burnout, over-commitment to work and the number of body parts with discomfort (0–9). The findings showed that physical QoL was negatively correlated with night -shift work, personal burnout, and number of body parts with discomfort. Psychological QoL was negatively correlated with night shift work and personal burnout. Environment QoL was negatively correlated with being male, night shift work and personal burnout. The results showed that the QoL among the packaging workers could be improved by reducing musculoskeletal discomfort, personal burnout and by improving work schedules.

Currently, the characteristics of the emergence and course of burnout syndrome among medical staff working with cancer children are not studied enough. It seems relevant to consider the psychological features of oncological medical specialists as an important personal factor, a protector of burnout syndrome. The features (empathetic tendencies, personal and situational anxiety, neurotization, self-actualization) in health care professionals working with cancer children were investigated. The object of the study was medical workers specializing in the field of oncology (doctors: radiologists, chemotherapists, hematologists, coloproctologists, hepatologists, pediatric oncologists, transfusiologists, etc.) with various experience. Research base was R. M. Gorbacheva Research Institute of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Transplantology, St. Petersburg. The study revealed the interconnection between the level of emotional burnout syndrome and levels of empathy tendencies, neurotization and anxiety of medical professionals: health workers with a high degree of empathy have less predisposition to burnout. The interconnection between the expression of emotional burnout syndrome and the self-actualization of personality of medical professionals was also revealed: the lower level of self-actualization the doctors have, the more inklined to emotional burnout they are.

Summary Objective: To determine the prevalence of burnout syndrome among resident physicians of various specialties and to evaluate associated factors. Method: The Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire and a sociodemographic questionnaire were used to evaluate factors associated with the syndrome. Burnout was defined as the association of high emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low professional achievement. Multivariate analysis was performed after adjustment of the Poisson model with the identification of risk factors and calculation of prevalence ratios (PR). Of the 250 resident physicians registered with Hospital das Clínicas of Pernambuco, 129 participated in the study. Results: In the three domains that characterize burnout syndrome, we found a low level of professional achievement in 94.6% of resident physicians interviewed, a high level of depersonalization in 31.8%, and 59.7% with a high level of emotional exhaustion. The prevalence of burnout was 27.9%. Having suffered a stressful event in the last six months (PR: 8.10; 95CI 1.2-57.2) and being a student of surgical specialty (PR: 1.99; 95CI 1.2-3.3) were independently associated with burnout. Conclusion: The prevalence of burnout found in resident physicians is in accordance with previous Brazilian studies. Residents of surgical specialties and those who suffered some stressful event were identified as susceptible in this study. The early identification of risk factors is fundamental for the implementation of preventive measures against burnout syndrome.

This study examined the relationship between caring and burnout in a sample of 888 registered nurses. The revised Caring Behaviors Inventory (Wolf, Giardino, Osborne, & Ambrose, 1994) was used to measure the dimensions of caring. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach & Jackson, 1986) was used to measure the dimensions of burnout. Multiple regression analysis was conducted between each dimension of burnout and carative factors. Four carative factors were identified that affected a nurse’s level of burnout. These factors had the greatest impact on the burnout dimension of reduced personal accomplishment. Overall, increases in caring led to decreased burnout for this sample.
