During a visit to Yarrabah in 1938, Norman Tindale, then working for the South Australian Museum, collected and documented a number of artefacts given to him by Dudley Bulmer, who was originally from Starcke River, north of Cooktown. This paper uses Tindale’s notes on these artefacts to show how Bulmer sometimes inscribed aspects of himself into his artefacts by combining events from his life with representations of Ancestral beings that were important in ceremony. Partly reflecting the power of the state to restrict his freedom, a feature of Bulmer’s presence in his artefacts is his absence from his homeland. I argue these elements make some of Bulmer’s artefacts inscriptive equivalents to the life story genre of Indigenous writing.

This thesis looks at Bulmer Hobson, the Irish nationalist and Quaker. It is not concerned with the later phase of Hobson's career, fi•om 1908 when he was based in Dublin, but with the earlier one in Ulster. The thesis charts Hobson's formative years and the important influences on him during this period. The early part of the thesis pays particular attention to Hobson's Quakerism and nationalism and the interaction between the two. It looks at the development of this synthesis which provided the basis for Hobson's 'defensive warfare' programme which served as a blueprint for achieving independence from the British and which Hobson applied through the Irish independence movement, Sinn Fein. As part of this the thesis looks at Hobson's early work, both with and in setting up cultural nationalist organizations in Belfast. From here, the thesis goes on to look at how Hobson incorporated Quaker and nationalist influences into his later nationalist work in Ulster, paying particular attention to the work of Hobson's organization, the Dungannon Club. The second part of the thesis looks at the formation and expansion of this organization and its successor, the Sinn Fein League. In looking at both, the thesis examines the two organizations' relationships with other Sinn Fein and non Sinn Fein organizations, as well as the advanced nationalist organization, the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB). While the thesis is concerned with Hobson's career in Ulster, it does not look at this in isolation from the rest of the Irish nationalist movement; instead it links it to wider developments in Ireland, Britain and America. As part of this, particular attention is paid to organizations like the Irish Republican Brotherhood, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Independent Orange Order, the United Irish League and Clan-naGael. The thesis looks at how Hobson tried to pull these various organizations together, as part of a new 'Young Ireland' movement based around his socioeconomic programme, but it recognises this ultimately failed.

Cette thèse étudie une des premières bulles spéculatives de l'histoire financière, la Bulle des Mers du Sud (BMS) qui s'est formée en 1720 sur les actifs d'une compagnie commerciale de restructuration de la dette publique anglaise. À cet effet, nous mobilisons les outils méthodologiques de l'histoire financière, de l'analyse financière et de l' histoire de la pensée économique. Le premier chapitre propose la description détaillée de cet épisode financier ainsi que l'examen du rôle de la Banque d'Angleterre lors de l'éclatement de la bulle. Le second chapitre présente l'analyse que fait James Steuart (1767) de la BMS ainsi que du système de John Law en France. Contrairement à ses contemporains, cet auteur considère ces deux épisodes de restructuration de la dette publique comme des tentatives d'établir la liquidité du marché financier et la liquidité bancaire, deux conditions nécessaires la croissance. Dans le même temps, Steuart offre une analyse pertinente de l'échec de ces deux épisodes. Dans le but de déterminer la rationalité ou no de [a BMS, [e troisième chapitre identifie [es comportements différents des investisseurs selon qu' ils opèrent sur [e marché des produits dérivés ou sur [e marché de l'actif sous-jacent. Le quatrième chapitre complète l'analyse en mettant en évidence un mécanisme financier spécifique à la BMS, [e fan de crédit, qui résulte d'une méconnaissance de quelques règles comptables et financières, de nos jours triviales. Syftet med studien är att belysa buller i förskolans pedagogiska inomhusmiljö och vilken inverkan det kan ha på barnen som vistas där, samt vilka åtgärder som kan vidtas för att få en god ljudmiljö. Som metod har en enkätundersökning och intervjuer med pedagoger utförts. Dessutom har förskolans inomhusmiljö med barn och vuxna observerats. Undersökningen visar att barn, vuxna, aktiviteter och leksaker skapar en bullrig miljö. Som en följd av detta buller upplever pedagogerna att barnen bli trötta och okoncentrerade, men också livliga och högljudda. För att motverka buller har vissa åtgärder utförts i arbetssätt och miljö, men pedagogerna upplever att bristande kunskap, tid och pengar hindrar dem i vidare arbete.

Trots att det finns lagar och rekommendationer återstår det mycket att göra för att skapa en god ljudmiljö för barnens fortsatta utveckling och lärande.

En av modern tids största miljöproblem anses vara buller. Bland annat kan nedsatt fysisk hälsaoch mental stress förekomma för människor som utsätts för bullerexponering. Ökande önskan om god akustisk miljö är idag i konflikt med att pågående urbanisering gör att vi utsätts för ökad bullerexponering i våra bostadsmiljöer. Urbaniseringen har lett till framställningen av en förordning som är fördelaktig för mer expansivt bostadsbyggande i bullerutsatta miljöer.Förordningen möjliggör byggnation vid högre trafikbullernivåer än tidigare tillåtet. Med avseende på tidigare kravnivåer har fasadväggar generellt ansetts ha mer än tillräcklig ljudisoleringsförmåga att klara trafikbullernivåerna. Till följd av nu gällande förordning är det nu inte lika entydigt att fasader med lättbyggnadsteknik har tillräckligt god ljudreduktionsförmåga. Av dessa anledningar är det aktuellt att studera hur bra fasader av lättbyggnadsteknik klarar att reducera bullret för att erfordra en kravställning på ekvivalentljudtrycksnivå inomhus som motsvarar ljudklass C eller B.Studien syftar till att undersöka om lättbyggnadsteknik är lämpligt i bullerutsatta områden som tillåts av dagens bullerkravställning. Målet är att erhålla en konstruktion i lättbyggnadsteknik som lämpas att byggas i denna höga bullerexponering. Frågeställningar ämnar att reda ut hur resultaten på väggarnas ljudisoleringsförmåga förhåller sig mellan de olika empiriska insamlingarna och dessutom hur de presterar gentemot dagens kravställningar.I rapporten genomförs akustiska fältmätningar av reduktionstalet (ljudisoleringen) enligt svenskstandard på tre fasadväggar av lättbyggnadsteknik. Fasadväggskonstruktionerna modelleras även i programvaran Insul 8 för att genom detta erhålla väggarnas beräknade reduktionstal. På en av fasadväggarna undersöks även det modellerade reduktionstalets variation följandemodifieringar av väggkonstruktionens uppbyggnad. Väggarna jämförs även med riktvärden förtre referensväggar redovisade i litteratur.Genom det teoretiska underlaget har resultaten från mätningarna, modelleringarna och litteratur-riktvärden utvärderats i förhållande till om de uppnår kravnivåer på ekvivalent ljudtryck inomhus. Resultaten för rådande fallundersökningar visar att alla undersökta väggar har erforderlig ljudreduktionsförmåga för att uppnå samhällets minimikrav (ljudklass C) då ljudreduktionen dimensioneras med väggen som dimensionerande fasadelement. Med avseende på fönster som dimensionerande fasadelement klarar två av sex väggar ej att uppnå inomhusnivåer för ljudklass C. Då kravnivåerna avser att upprätta en ännu bättre ljudmiljö (ljudklass B) än minimikraven så erhåller fyra av sex väggar denna erforderliga ljudisolering med vägg som dimensionerande element. För att uppnå ljudklass B då fönstrets ljudreduktion är dimensionerande så har en fältmätning, en referensvägg och två väggmodelleringar (utan modifieringar) erforderlig ljudisolering.Slutsatserna påvisar att ljudisoleringen är generellt sett erforderlig för väggarna i lättbyggnadsteknik, även i bullerutsatta områden som tillåts av dagens kravställning. Att kunnauppnå en god ljudmiljö (ljudklass B) avseende ekvivalent ljudtryck inomhus är däremot ej självklart då väggar i lättbyggnadsteknik byggs på bullerexponerad plats. Möjligheten att förbättra reduktionstalet är möjligt och tillämpbart genom att öka massan eller minska styvheten på väggen om reduktionstal är undermåliga.
This thesis evaluates whether walls with light-frame construction are suitable to build in areas with high sound pressure levels, allowed by Sweden’s law regarding loud traffic noise nearbuildings. Previous consensus has been that exterior walls have sufficient sound insulation,regarding sound pressure levels by the residence-façade generated from traffic noise, to achieverequired indoor sound pressure levels. Due to the ongoing urbanization in Sweden, a law haspassed that increased the allowed levels of equivalent sound pressure by a residence-façade. Therefore, it has become relevant to examine if light-frame construction façades really do have sufficient sound insulation.In the study, field measurements are made on three façade walls to determine their noise reduction properties. The values from the measurements are compared to the sound insulation capacity of software-built wall-models with the same wall constructions as the field measured walls. Both the measured and the modelled walls sound insulation is also compared parallel to insulation values for light-frame construction walls found in literature. The values of the walls sound insultation are also evaluated regarding high but occurring sound pressure levels by facades and demanded levels of sound pressure indoors. Modifications are made to the construction of one modelled wall to quantify the improvement in sound insulation of the walls derived from the investigated construction-modifications.The results conclude that the examined light-frame construction walls are indeed sufficient in the aspect of sound insulation to merely satisfy the laws. The walls sound insulation is not as unambiguously sufficient when establishing what is considered a good indoor acoustic environment, instead of only achieving minimum levels required by law.

Les bulbes sont présents dans environ 80% des galaxies spirales locales de masse intermédiaire. Les galaxies spirales représentent environ 70% des galaxies de masse intermédiaire (typiquement avec des masses comprises entre 2 × 10^10 et 10^11 masses solaires) de l’Univers local. Alors que les bulbes classiques sont généralement associés aux résultats de fusions, les pseudo-bulbes sont plutôt associés à l’évolution séculaire. Cependant, le modèle cosmologique ΛCDM prévoit une croissance hiérarchique des galaxies par les fusions alors que l’on trouve plus de 50% de pseudo-bulbes dans les galaxies spirales de masse intermédiaire de l’Univers local. Le but de la thèse est de vérifier s’il est possible de construire des pseudo-bulbes à partir de fusions majeures riches en gaz. La première partie de cette thèse est consacrée à la présentation du sujet ainsi qu’à l’état de l’art sur la formation et l’évolution des bulbes galactiques.La deuxième partie de cette thèse porte sur la description de la méthodologie mise en place pour analyser les bulbes des galaxies spirales et comprendre leur formation. La thèse com- porte deux axes d’études, une partie observationnelle avec l’analyse de deux échantillons complets de galaxies spirales locales de masse intermédiaire pour déterminer la proportion de pseudo-bulbes dans ces échantillons et avoir une référence robuste. Une autre partie, qui est le coeur de l’étude, est dédiée à l’analyse de simulations numériques de fusions majeures de deux progéniteurs riches en gaz réalisées avec un code N-body/Hydrodynamique (GADGET2). L’objectif est de reproduire ce type de galaxies et d’étudier leurs propriétés grâce à une décomposition bulbe+disque.Dans la troisième partie, je montre que, dans les limites données par les simulations, nous pou- vons reproduire des galaxies spirales présentant des pseudo-bulbes via des fusions majeures riches en gaz. Cette thèse propose un nouveau scénario de formation des pseudo-bulbes grâce à la formation de barres durant les fusions majeures qui permet d’amener du gaz dans les parties centrales. De plus, beaucoup de structures observées comme des barres, anneaux ou double-disques sont reproduits dans les simulations. Les différents paramètres des simulations ont ensuite été modifiés (fraction de gaz, rapport de masses, masse des progéniteurs, feedback, extension du gaz, pericentre) pour explorer leur impact sur les résultats. On constate que les disparités des indices de Sersic et des rapports B/T proviennent autant de la différence entre les orbites que de celle entre les paramètres physiques initiaux choisis pour les simulations, mais certaines grandes tendances peuvent tout de même être extraites. Par exemple, l’étude montre que plus la fraction de gaz des progéniteurs est élevée, plus les indices Sersic et le rapport B/T diminuent, plus le nombre de barres et leur taille augmentent
Bulges are present in almost 80% of nearby spiral galaxies of intermediate mass. Spiral galaxies represent about 70% of the intermediate-mass galaxies (typically with a mass between 2 × 10^10 and 10^11 solar masses) in the local Universe. While classical bulges have been associated to the result of major mergers, pseudo-bulges have been rather associated to secular evolution. However, the cosmological ΛCDM model predicts a hierarchical growth of galaxies via mergers while pseudo-bulges are found in > 50% of large nearby spiral galaxies. The aim of this thesis is to verify if we can build pseudo-bulges with gas-rich major mergers. The first part of this thesis is devoted to the presentation of the subject and the state of the art on the formation and evolution of galactic bulges.The second part of this thesis is focusing on the methodology developped to analyse bulges of spiral galaxies and understand their formation. The thesis has two axes of study, an observational part with the analysis of two complete samples of local spiral galaxies of intermediate mass to determine the proportion of pseudo-bulges in these samples and to have a reliable reference. Another part, which is the core of the study, is dedicated to the analysis of nume- rical simulations of gas-rich major mergers done with a N-body / SPH code (GADGET2). The aim is to reproduce this type of galaxy and to study their properties thanks to a bulge + disk decomposition.In the third part, I show that, within the limits given by the simulations, we can reproduce spiral galaxies with pseudo-bulges via gas-rich major mergers. This thesis propose a new scenario of pseudo-bulge formation thanks to the formation of a bar, which bring gas into the central parts. In addition, most of the observed structures, such as bars, rings or double-disks, are reproduced in the simulations. The different parameters of simulations has been then modified (gas fraction, mass ratio, mass of progenitors, feedback, gas extension, pericenter) to explore their impact on the results. We found that the disparities on Sersic index and B/T ratio comes as much from the difference between orbits as from between initial physical parameters chosen for simulations but we can still extract some trends. For instance, I show that the higher the gas fraction of the progenitors, the lower the Sersic index and the B/T ratio, the more the number of bars and their size increases

This thesis deals with noise from wind turbines and low-frequency traffic noise. The aim was to gain practical experience by using different measurement techniques, where the wind noise was measured by emission, immission, ambisonic and binaural recordings. Both examined wind turbines have tonal components at 500Hz and 2000Hz. From the traffic noise one could notice two strong peaks in the 1/3 octave band at 50Hz and 63Hz. The investigation of it showed that the lower peak at 50Hz came from automobiles while the one at 63Hz were from heavy trucks. The binaural recordings were used in a listening test. A listening test was conducted where 15 test subjects estimated how annoying the noise is in relation to pink noise. The result showed that the annoyance level were higher for sound containing tonal components.

Milosevic, S. 2014. Buller – Hur planers en bullerfri stad?. Kulturgeografiska institutionen, Uppsatser, Uppsala universitet.   This essay is about noise pollution caused by urbanization. The field study takes place in Uppsala and explores their organization of handling problems with noise pollution caused by traffic. Noise pollution has long been neglected as an environmental hazard. Studies show that noise pollution can cause severe health problems such as increased blood pressure. Therefore the EU has made a new directive on how cities should handle noise pollution. The essay also exemplifies how the work with noise pollution is implemented in a residential production of today. I have come to my results by observing the surroundings and interviewing the planning engineer of the new residential buildings on the street Stationsgatan which is close to the Central station in Uppsala, Sweden. I have also interviewed the project manager of the municipality’s action plan for reducing noise pollution which was made due to the EU-directive. My results show that we must reduce our dependence of cars and plan for a soundscape as much as we plan on the visual aspect if we want to reduce the noise pollutions in our cities. Not only will the noise pollution reduce if we reduced the use of private cars but also a lot of other pollutions would decrease.

Två olika bullertypers effekt på visuell talavläsning undersöktes på 23 normalhörande (de bästa av 147 i ett förtest). Uppgiften var att visuellt avläsa vanliga svenska ord i tre ljudförhållanden: tystnad, brus och talbuller. Talbuller gav signifikant lägre avläseprestation än tystnad och brus. Resultatet tolkas som fonologisk informationsstörning, att talavläsningen kräver fonologisk bearbetning, vilket också talbullret tvingar till. Det fanns ett medelstarkt samband mellan uppskattad ansträngning och avläseprestation för tystnad, ju bättre deltagarna avläste desto mindre ansträngande tyckte de att det var. Samband mellan självskattningar och avläseprestation för brus och talbuller saknades.

Då det idag byggs mer i redan tätbebyggda områden, är ämnet intressant att undersöka för såväl befintliga som framtida projekt. Studien behandlar projektets utmaningar av ställda bullerkrav, samt hur buller påverkar yrkesarbetare och kringliggande verksamheter. Rapporten är en kombination av kvantitativ och kvalitativ metodik. Den kvantitativa delen utgjordes av två enkätundersökningar. Den ena enkäten behandlade närliggande verksamheters upplevelse av bullerstörningar från projektet. Den andra enkäten undersökte hur yrkesarbetare i projektet påverkas av buller i deras dagliga arbete. För en fördjupning i hur bullerfrågor hanteras inom WLC, gjordes kvalitativa telefonintervjuer med utvalda personer i projektet. I resultatet konstaterades att yrkesarbetare inom projektet inte är tillräckligt medvetna om konsekvenser och hälsoeffekter som orsakas av buller. Idag är det inte ett krav att använda hörselskydd inom byggarbetsplatsområdet, dock bör hörselskydd användas vid behov när bullrande arbeten utförs. Många yrkesarbetare anser att användning av hörselskydd borde vara ett krav. Enkätundersökningen visar att buller från projektet påverkar kringliggande verksamheter och att informationsspridning om bullerstörningar är viktigt. Bullerkraven som ställs mot WLC har orsakat att dispens måste sökas till vissa bullerkritiska arbetsmoment. Det visar sig även vara en utmaning att arbeta med dessa krav för ett sådant stort projekt med många aktörer inblandade. Yrkesarbetarnas medvetenhet om hur buller påverkar hälsan kan ifrågasättas. Även om deras dagliga arbete upplevs som bullrig, verkar de omedvetna om hur buller kan påverka deras framtida hälsa. Detta är en arbetsmiljöfråga som bör uppmärksammas. Förbättringsområden inom bullerfrågor är bättre kommunikation mellan inblandade parter samt att säkerställa att information om bullerstörningar når ut till alla berörda.
This report covers projects E05 Korsvägen where the client is Trafikverket and the contractor West Link Contractors, WLC. We have chosen to examine a subject for the project and chose to immerse ourselves in noise issues. Korsvägen is a substage of the West Link built in central Gothenburg. The project will affect the environment with noise from the construction site. It is therefore interesting to investigate how the environment is affected and how workers and entrepreneurs within the project experience a noisy work environment. Furthermore, as there are increasingly large complex infrastructure projects, it is interesting to shed light on how WLC is working to achieve the requirements regarding noise. The report is a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The quantitative part consisted of two surveys. One survey examined the experience of nearby companies regarding noise disturbances from the project. The second survey examined how workers in the project are affected by noise in their daily work. For a deepening of how noise issues are handled within WLC, qualitative telephone interviews were conducted with selected people from the project. The results found that workers in the project are not sufficiently aware of the consequences and health effects caused by noise. Today there is no requirement to use hearing protection in the construction area, however, hearing protection should be used as needed when noisy work is carried out. Many workers believe that the use of hearing protection should be a requirement. The survey shows that noise from the project affects the surrounding activities and that the dissemination of information on noise disturbances is important. The noise requirements imposed against WLC have caused exemptions to be sought for certain noise-critical work operations. It also proved to be a challenge to work on these requirements for such a large project with many actors involved. Workers ' awareness of how noise affects health can be questioned. Although their daily work is perceived as noisy, they seem unaware of how noise can affect their future health. This is a health and safety issue that should be addressed. Improvement areas concerning noise issues are better communication between the parties involved and ensuring that information on noise disturbance reaches all concerned.

Abstract Weld overlay is a repair method that has been used over the last 10 years to limit the growth of bulges and to extend the remaining life of delayed coking drums. Different refinery operators have used varied approaches, ranging from localized patches on specific regions of concern, to bands along circumferential welds, to large sections of structural repair that completely cover a bulged area. The authors have observed the evolution of regions repaired with internal weld overlay on 18 drums over periods of 5 and 8 years. A comparison of bulge sharpness and bulge depth on a year-over-year basis is presented to measure the effectiveness of metal weld overlay and how the overlay impacts continued distortion of the vessel. Furthermore, factors such as the taper ratio in the transition zones, and the distance between the peak of a bulged area and the edges of the weld overlay, are presented as key parameters that affect the likelihood of cracks developing along the transition zones at the upper and lower edges of the repair.

This paper contains several investigations on the behaviour of bulged piles. Bulge means the application of vertical steel plates somewhere near ground surface to improve the lateral bearing capacity. The results of small scale tests in sand are illustrated, which demonstrate the effectiveness of such bulge. Some theoretical investigations are presented trying to apply standard methods like the p-y-curve procedure to the design of bulged piles. An outline of possible calculation methods is given. Investigations on two different exemplary pile systems demonstrate the behaviour of the bulged structure and give an idea of the advantages of this innovative system.

The stress field in and around bulges in cylindrical and oval pressure vessels is examined using linear elastic finite element models. The effects of bulge size and shape on axial and hoop stresses are examined under internal pressure loading. Stress components at the center of the bulge, in the entire bulge, and in the vessel outside the bulge are analyzed both on the inside and outside surfaces of the vessel wall. In addition, the effects of vessel ovality (out-of-roundness) and the location of a bulge relative to ovality on these stress components are studied. This study provides engineers with a detailed look at bulging-induced stresses and the limitations of stress-based fitness-for-service assessment of bulges in pressure vessels such as refinery coke drums.

Several studies recognized that cracks in delayed coke drums resulted from low cycle fatigue induced by cyclic thermal stress [1], [2], [3]. According to a coke drum survey coordinated by API in 1996 [1], there are two different areas where cracks are produced. The first zone is located at the shell to skirt weld, and the second at the bulged areas found in the cylindrical section. In the second case, from 145 coke drums 57% reported that had shell bulging problems. Of the drums that bulged, 87 % also showed cracks. Recently, it has been reported the use of a novel weld repair procedure on bulged sections of a drum. In this repair, the bulge is overlaid with weld metal on the inside or outside on the bulge depending on the bulge shape. It has been reported that this repair procedure can stop further bulging on the shell, but detailed information about its influence has not yet been published. Finite element analysis of several bulged patterns that were identified from some laser mappings are used to compare the level of the stress after a weld overlay repair is made. The study was carried out running a sequentially-coupled thermo-mechanical analysis. The assessment shows the influence of the thickness and the extent of the weld overlay on the level of stress on bulged coke drums. The results indicated that depending on the initial bulged shape this repair method either reduces or increases the level of the stress. When an inward deformation pattern is observed, an external reinforcement is recommended; however, when an outward deformation pattern is developed in a coke drum, an external weld overlay repair is not recommended.

A high pressure carbamate condenser (HPCC) is a shell and tube heat exchanger with low pressure steam/condensate on the shell side and high pressure carbamate solution on the tube side. The inlet channel of the exchanger is protected from the internal corrosive environment by means of an austenitic stainless steel liner. During the first internal inspection after commissioning, a bulge was observed in the liner where a pass partition plate is joined to the liner. Surface-breaking cracks were observed at the partition plate to liner welds in the bulged region. The cracks were removed by shallow grinding, but a fitness-for-service assessment was required to evaluate the suitability of the bulged liner for continued service. Due to the complexity of the geometry, a handheld 3D geometry scanner was used to accurately measure the deformed shape of the bulge. Using the measured geometry, a finite element model was developed and used to perform a level 3 fitness for service assessment. This paper will describe the assessment procedure in detail as well as the complex internal repairs that were ultimately implemented in order to restore the integrity of the equipment.

We used the genetic algorithm (GA) and two-dimensional blood flow analysis to examine the fluid dynamic and engineering factors in multi-objective optimization of blood tubes (vessels). We supposed two factors from fluid dynamics: the wall shear stress (WSS) and the pressure loss, and one materials saving factor: the artery length. As a result, we could get the optimum shapes for each factor. In the case of WSS and artery length, both smoothly curved artery shapes and shapes with bulges were obtained as lower WSS cases. The shapes with bulges were similar to those of aneurysms. In this case, it was found that the WSS increases after the bulge is removed. This means bulges in artery vessel areas with higher WSSs effectively reduce the WSS value. Only the case of WSS and artery length produced a shape like an aneurysm. These results indicate that WSS and artery length are significant factors in determining artery shape.

Coke drums are thin-walled pressure vessels that experience low cycle fatigue due to thermal loadings. The delayed coking process is comprised by three major stages: heating, coking and cooling, which repeat at intervals between 20 and 48 hours. The cyclic changes of temperature increase the growth of bulges and cracks which with the passing of time, propagate and eventually cause failures due to the loss of containment. A better understanding of the phenomena of the thermal gradients and their influence on the generated stresses would reduce the effects of the damage mechanisms afflicting coke drums, for example; a continuous monitoring system could be implemented in order to control the cooling ramp to obtain a more homogeneous quenching around the cylinder of the coke drum and consequently increase its lifetime. It is been widely accepted that there is a relationship between high cooling rates in isolated zones and high axial stresses. However, this relationship has not been fully validated, since there are also been reported events of low cooling rates and high stresses. This study shows a predictable behavior (trend) that relates the spatial thermal gradients and the axial and circumferential stresses generated. A coke drum in an upgrader facility was instrumented with two arrays or grids, each of them having 24 thermocouples and 2 strain gauges in zones with distinct bulges. One arrangement was located at an inward bulge while the other was located at an outward bulge. Computational models were carried out to reproduce the behavior of the instrumented zones with their actual deformations obtained from laser scanning. Finite element models were developed using a sequentially coupled thermo-mechanical analysis to determine the transient temperature and stress distributions. The effect of the circumferential thermal gradients on the stress levels in the instrumented cylindrical sections were analyzed, considering two cases; the first of them a perfect cylinder (without deformation) and the second one considering the presence of bulges in the area of interest. The results indicate that there is a relationship between the circumferential thermal gradients [°C/m] or [°F/ft] and the axial stress levels, i.e., cold zones generate axial tensile stresses, and hot zones produce compressive axial stresses. This relationship is affected — exacerbated or counteracted — by the presence of the bulges. Additionally, the results obtained in this paper confirm those of previous investigations showing that outward bulges subject to pressure and thermal loading generate high stresses on its internal surface and low stresses on its external face whereas inward bulges produce the opposite effect.

Abstract Searching for the optimal solution of the comprehensive performance of the aerodynamic and stealth characteristics of the aircraft inlet has become the trend of the development of the aircraft inlet due to the rapid development of radar detection technology. The aircraft inlet is a vital source of scattering due to its own cavity structure characteristic. Accordingly, reducing the electromagnetic stealth characteristic value of the stealth aircraft inlet can be served as the main way to reduce the RCS value of the whole airplane. Accordingly, a new type of stealth aircraft inlet that incorporates the design of the inner bulge is designed in this paper, which significantly reduces the value of radar-cross section (RCS) of the inlet by transforming the three-dimensional shape of the inlet. The design of this kind of inlet is based on the parametric rapid reconstruction geometry method that produces a geometry profile of the inlet through controlling a limited number of characteristic parameters. At the same time, the profile coordinates of the inner bulge is decided by means of three parameters, including the area of inner bulge, the circumferential distance and the radial offset. This paper calculates the aerodynamic characteristics of the seven S-shaped inlets, including six S-shaped inlets incorporated the inner bulges with different parameters, and an ordinary S-shaped inlet without the inner bulge as a control model. Total pressure recovery and distortion index are used as the indicators for judging the flow characteristics of these inlets to evaluate the effects on the aerodynamic characteristics of the stealth inlet after incorporating the inner bulge, which plays an important role in further evaluating the influence of the working environment of the compressor after the inlet. These S-shaped inlets with inner bulges on them resulting a decrease on total pressure recovery by 0.69% to 1.14%, at the same time, the total pressure distortion index at the exit of inlet is increased by 14.77% to 26.85%. Overall, the aerodynamic performance of the inlet with the design of the inner bulge can’t be seen a large decline. What’s more, this paper also compares the electromagnetic properties of the S-shaped inlet models with the inner bulge with the inlet without the inner bulge, using the algorithm of iterative physical optics (IPO) to evaluate the stealth characteristics of the models. This method is a kind of high-frequency approximation method for analyzing the scattering characteristics of the cavity scattering, with the high calculation accuracy as well as the high calculation efficiency. At the same time, the calculation takes up less memory, this is simply because that the mesh is coarser in calculation when using the IPO algorithm. The resulting inlet design achieving a dramatic improvement in stealth performance that the value of RCS is reduced by up to 97% after incorporating the design of inner bulge. In general, the stealth characteristics of optimized stealth aircraft inlet has greatly improved.

Ground anchors connected to guy wires for tower structures in cold climates suffer from frost heaving, which causes loss of wire tension and subsequent structural instability. It is necessary to understand what ground anchors are available to resist this tendency yet are still capable of expedient installation in remote areas. To that end, three metal, traditional ground-anchor types (arrowhead, bullet, and penetrating auger) and one novel polyvinyl chloride (PVC) T-post anchor were evaluated in frozen gravels and frozen silts at a research facility in Fairbanks, Alaska. Criteria included installation capability, failure loading, and removal ability. Additionally, expedient installation techniques for use in field conditions were also demonstrated. All three traditional ground anchors failed to penetrate frozen gravels. The penetrating auger also failed to penetrate frozen silts, but the arrowhead and bullet anchors did penetrate frozen silts with difficulty. The PVC anchor is capable of being installed only in a predrilled pilot hole. Under flexural load, the arrowhead anchor cable failed at 3686.72 lb, and the bullet anchor cable failed at 1753.44 lb. The PVC slid out of its hole at a direct-pull force of 1978.24 lb and failed under flexural stress at 202.32 lb.
