Industrial building energy consumption accounts for more than half of building energy consumption. In order to understand the situation of energy consumption of industrial building’s energy system in Shenyang located in China's northeast severe cold region, we investigated the distribution of industrial buildings and energy system’s energy consumption (HVAC, water supply and drainage, electrical system) of typical industrial buildings in Shenyang, it is found that the energy system’s energy consumption of Shenyang is great because of long-term neglecting of industrial building’s energy conservation. We must strengthen the designing of energy conservation, applying of new technology and supervising of industrial building to develop the potential of industrial building’s energy conservation.

The conservation of heritage architecture buildings is becoming more popular and significant, as there is a growing interest in changing city growth while conserving identity. One strategy for maintaining a heritage building’s identity is to modify the building’s uses, which we reveal based on prior expert-authored publications. However, five conservation methods are worth elaborating on in order to conduct the cultural preservation of heritage buildings in Indonesia. In this study, we assess the existing experience of conservation methods in many heritage buildings in Indonesia and consider the concepts of preservation, maintenance, restoration, reconstruction, and adaptation in practice. When Henry Maclaine Pont designed the Barakgebouw building in 1920, those conservation techniques had been successfully used. Bandung Institute of Technology’s West Hall is currently often referred to as Technische Hoogheschool Bandung. The practical value of his architectural work is found in the integration of the research findings into contemporary architectural practice and regional indigenous vernacular heritage, particularly in the cultural preservation of Indonesian historic structures. This research was expected to be crucial for subsequent studies on Indonesian heritage buildings’ interior conservation techniques.

AbstractThe process adopted by the local government to protect the interior of an old building in Victoria, British Columbia, culminated in a significant compensation award in favor of the building's owner and highlights the shortcomings of a coercive regulatory approach to heritage conservation. This study focuses on the relationship between cooperative resolution of conflicts between the rights of the public to protect heritage buildings and the rights of private property owners to the use of their property without interference, on the one hand, and the long-term utility and conservation of historic buildings and the sustainability of local government heritage programs, on the other. Analysis includes discussion on (a) key issues arising out of an involuntary heritage designation, (b) flexible alternative conservation mechanisms and incentives available to local governments, (c) approaches to conservation of heritage buildings in other jurisdictions, and (d) opportunities for improvement in the local government heritage conservation program.

Abstract Heritage buildings define the distinctive character of many urban areas by creating continuity with the past and serving as a visual cultural reference. To ensure their continued use, these buildings must be adapted for better performance that demands energy retrofitting strategies while satisfying indoor environmental quality. Energy retrofit reduces CO2eq emissions in the operation phase but typically entails embodied carbon and is not always applicable to historic buildings that require architectural and cultural conservation. This study phrases it as a trilemma and aims to identify an optimal balance between increased energy efficiency and decreased lifecycle carbon when architecture conservation is acknowledged. The research is applied to a traditional fisherman’s cottage in the village on Howth Head, Ireland with an aim to make it a Positive Energy Building (PEB). First, the construction method and heritage value are investigated followed by an experimental U-value calculation to identify the intervention needs. Then, a range of retrofit strategies to increase the energy efficiency of the building, but sensitive to the architectural conservation agenda, are proposed. Furthermore, using the EnergyPlus simulation engine, the study analyses the implications of different building materials for thermal insulation, building façade and window retrofit, on the building’s operational energy performance. Finally, for each scenario, a lifecycle carbon analysis was applied to identify the optimal strategy when architecture conservation is considered. The best retrofit strategies for reducing operational carbon do not always decrease embodied carbon. Similarly, the optimal materials to be used to achieve the highest level of energy efficiency and reduced life cycle carbon to become a PEB do not adhere to architectural conservation objectives. Further analysis is undertaken to achieve a balanced strategy which can be adopted in similar conservation retrofit projects.

Purpose Today, about 30 per cent of European existing buildings can be entitled as “historical buildings”. Nowadays, their energy retrofit is important to reach the ambitious European CO2 emissions’ reduction objectives. The purpose of this paper is to outline a methodology to investigate the potential energy savings and the enhancement of historical buildings’ liveability by acting only on their operation, so that the building fabric could be maintained as much as possible as the original evidence. Design/methodology/approach The paper describes the framework’s theoretical phases and their application in two real case studies. The methodology was conceived with a pre-test and post-test design approach. Findings The research demonstrated that the elaborated methodology is flexible and allows the adoption of different energy retrofit strategies for the different cases. Research limitations/implications Limitations arise out of the circumstance that the methodology is based on occupants and technicians willingness to engage in the strategies, so it is not possible to quantify its efficacy ex ante. Practical implications Practical implications can be found in the way of addressing energy retrofit strategies through a user-centric approach with minimum impact on the building itself. Social implications At the same time, the methodology has a strong social aspect with its potential to change people’s attitudes towards energy usage and behaviour. Originality/value This study not only represents the first attempt of applying a systematic energy retrofit strategy based on occupants and technicians behavioural change in historic buildings, but also is one of the first studies dedicated to occupants’ comfort and behaviour assessment in this context.

Since the Portuguese era in Malacca in the 16th century, many authentic colonial heritage buildings were built in Malacca and other parts of Malaysia, most of which were masonry structural buildings. After Melaka and George Town received recognition from UNESCO as World Heritage Sites on 7th July 2008, heritage building conservation in Malaysia has attracted serious attention from various parties. Since the establishment of the National Heritage Department under the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645) on 1 March 2006, the implementation of scientific tests in heritage building conservation practice in Malaysia has been encouraged and recommended by the Department. However, scientific tests are normally only conducted in conservation works of National Heritage buildings and some Category I heritage buildings, but not made compulsory for all heritage buildings conservation projects in Malaysia. This paper is based on a research carried out to study the scientific tests conducted in masonry heritage building as part of conservation practice in Malaysia. The research findings revealed that scientific tests such as X-ray fluorescence test, ion chromatography test, moisture test and Schmidt hammer rebound test are important for masonry heritage building conservation in Malaysia. The basic guidelines to conduct the scientific tests derived from the research findings will be able to enhance the current practice in conserving masonry heritage buildings in Malaysia.

Abstract Historic buildings carry the history of human civilisation, and their conservation and utilisation are widely valued by countries around the world. At present, the lack of qualitative and quantitative assessment and evaluation methods for the preservation status and attachment value of historic buildings poses a challenge to the smooth implementation of the conservation and utilisation of historic buildings. The development of a set of system standards for the assessment and evaluation of historic buildings is an urgent task for the conservation and utilisation of historic buildings. This paper proposes a set of comprehensive mapping assessment and evaluation system for historical buildings through the analysis and sorting out of the current situation of preserving historical buildings and their development lineage, architectural style, building type, society and art. Finally, based on the above mapping evaluation system, 20 historical buildings are graded according to the requirements of historical building classification, and according to the different levels. Corresponding conservation measures are proposed and different planning schemes are formulated to better utilise the historical, scientific, cultural and economic values of historical buildings.

The thesis examines building conservation philosophy, as it is commonly known in this field of activity. The thesis explores the perceived problems between philosophy and practice that are present in building conservation. The overall purpose being to shed light on the relationship between philosophy, theory and practice for the benefit of practitioners. The thesis has focused on the theoretical and philosophical side of the question as well as the practical. This will explain the type of data and analysis that was used. The thesis begins by establishing that there is a perceived problem between philosophy and practice in building conservation, and shows why this is practically important. The thesis then deals with the theoretical background of the work, showing the viewpoint from which the researcher has looked at the issues. The methodology of research is then shown with the emphasis being on the research methods that will yield truth. The main body of the thesis then deals with the data and analysis. The foci being the theory of William Morris and the early development of conservation philosophy, then a look at practical repair advice in building conservation, after that a look at the perceptions of conservation practitioners and the casework of conservation organisations, following this a look at the application of conservation philosophy to conservation policy such as PPG 15 and planning, the relationship of sustainability and conservation philosophy is also explored. Finally, the philosophy of Dooyeweerd is applied to the field to see whether the perceived problems of conservation philosophy can be helped by the application of his scientific philosophy. The conclusions at the end of the thesis draw together the analysis and show the contribution to knowledge.

Energy consumption of large public buildings has exceeded 33% of the total world energy consumption. Since it can help us lower the energy consumption of huge buildings to attain a zero-energy building (ZEB), energy conservation of large public buildings has attracted everyone’s attention. The chapter is classified into five sections. The first two sections provide a succinct explanation of zero-energy building and a broad overview of energy conservation. The chapter then goes on to discuss ASHRAE Standard 90.1, which is a set of professional guidelines that the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers regularly publishes to standardizes the demands placed on buildings to guarantee a low energy usage. Section four is all about different types of heat recovery systems that can reduce a building’s energy usage. The last topic deals about what you need to do in your daily lives to use as little energy as possible. Energy-efficient buildings that produce enough renewable energy to meet their own annual energy consumption requirements is known as zero-energy building. Upon using different energy conservation practices discussed under this chapter along with the advancement of technologies, you can save huge amount of energy which will highly cut down your energy demand.

What were the traditional techniques and materials employed to maintain and conserve vernacular buildings? If we study carefully, we could find the answers in analyzing existing vernacular constructions, related traditional building cultures, and the inhabitants’ lifestyle practices. My research, particularly my Master’s in Architectural Conservation dissertation, aimed to explore the tangible and intangible aspects of traditional living that contributed to the conservation of vernacular buildings. My research affirmed that people in the olden times had a deep understanding of their surrounding environment and micro-climate. They effectively used local land resources to develop building techniques that preserved their buildings for several generations. E.g., In India, fruit resin was added to mud-plasters to strengthen them. The study also provided insights into traditions and social norms that contributed to the upkeep and longevity of vernacular buildings. E.g., In Portugal, every year, people lime-washed their walls before the village feast. Though it was a cleaning act, the whitewash served as a protective layer to the walls. The former practices were conscious efforts to preserve buildings. However, the latter often laid hidden in daily life routines and hence remained unrecognized as conservation efforts. This research paper highlights some traditional building and maintenance strategies native to different parts of the world that – consciously or not – contributed to the conservation and maintenance of vernacular constructions. It is intended to bring to notice traditional conservation methods, which could be integrated into modern conservation strategies by heritage professionals today.

The purpose of this work was to determine the possible optimal cost effectiveness of various energy conservation options for new buildings in the local climate. The building energy analysis code Energy-10 was used for this purpose. Three types of savings have been evaluated: energy savings, operating cost savings, and Life-Cycle Cost (LCC) savings. To complete this study, a parametric analysis was performed on the influence on LCC savings due to variations of various individual components (including window characteristics, wall, floor, and roof constructions) and the whole-composite buildings. The initial part of the study focused on examining the impacts of individual components within the capabilities of Energy-10. For example, the impacts of a single window size, orientation, and construction were analyzed. While doing this, all of the other heat loss/heat gain paths were made negligible. Results of this aspect of the work were used to define a shorter list of components and building construction options to evaluate in the following composite-house studies. Then two general categories for the whole-composite buildings were evaluated to assist in analyzing the potential cost-effectiveness and benefits of buildings’ energy conservation options. In these studies, various energy cost escalation rates, economic life times, and replacement costs were considered. Building orientations relative the areal placement of fenestrations were also evaluated. Conclusions are given about combinations of construction elements that make the most economic sense for this rapidly growing population area. While Las Vegas climatic data are considered in this work, the conclusions are more generally applicable in the desert Southwest portion of the US.

Annotation:
Historic building restoration and renovation requires sensitivity to the cultural heritage, historic value, and sustainability (i.e., building physics, energy efficiency, and comfort) goals of the project. Heat recovery ventilation can contribute to the mentioned goals if ventilation concepts, and airflow distribution is planned and realized in a minimally invasive way. Compared to new buildings, the building physics of historic buildings are more complicated in terms of hygrothermal performance. In particular if internal insulation is applied, the need for dehumidification is needed for robust and risk-free future use, while maintaining the building’s cultural value. As each ventilation system has to be chosen and adapted individually to the specific building, the selection of the appropriate system type is not an easy task.
