The Africa Bibliography has been published by the International African Institute (IAI) as a print volume since 1985. The first editor was Hector Blackhurst, a social anthropologist turned academic librarian at the University of Manchester. In the inaugural volume, Jacob F. Ade Ajayi, the then Chairman of the International African Institute wrote that ‘Greater technical experience will, it is hoped, facilitate typographical improvements'.1 A second concern of the Bibliography, as expressed by Ajayi, was to monitor and record material produced in Africa ‘that does not always circulate widely and might otherwise escape notice’.2

Commentary: Organisations like the International News Safety Institute (INSI), formed in 2001 and based in Brussels, have created an impressive global network to help news workers facing danger on assignment; as well, big networks such as the BBC, CNN and the ABC have adopted measures including battlefield security courses, protective gear, first-aid training, and carefully-rehearsed exit strategies. Despite all this, reporters are still being targeted, and too many governments are still ignoring, and even giving support to, the killing of journalists.

The article is a characteristic of the development of statistics with emphasis on the contribution made by Polish statisticians. The origins of Polish statistics go back to 17th century when the king’s secretary worked out a formula of presenting crop estimates and published his findings. These and other works are presented in the chapter devoted to the achievements of Polish statisticians before founding International Statistical Institutes. In the following chapters the achievements of international statistical congresses are presented starting from the Brussels Congress in 1853 and ending with the World Statistics Congress in 2015. This article presents only some of the works of Polish statisticians made for the part of the International Statistical Institute. It seems that there is a necessity for presenting the works of Polish statisticians in the most important statistical institute more thoroughly, because it is our duty to foster their achievements.

From the 1970s onwards Danish contributions were sent to the international art bibliography published by the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Broader Nordic co-operation began when the Bibliography of the history of art (later the International bibliography of art) was established in 1990. Throughout the next two decades, art libraries in each of the five countries selected key material whose records were then submitted for publication. This collaboration came to an end in 2009 when the Getty announced that it could no longer continue to support the IBA on its own, although it would introduce free access via its website to the data for the years 1975 to 2007.

The conference, which was convened by Professor Lutgart Van den Berghe of the University of Gent, was dedicated to the intensive debate over the marks and characteristics of “European Capitalism” in light of the international corporate governance debate, which has been affected by the recent earthquakes in the confidence of investors, shareholders and stakeholders precipitated by the corporate scandals of Enron, Worldcom, Global Crossing and others. The conference also took note of the impact of America's new Sarbanes-Oxley legislation, which seeks to respond to the wave of corporate scandals, on the international corporate governance debate.

Annotation:
The Future of Art Bibliography (FAB) initiative developed out of various conversations among colleagues in the United States and Europe. Events in the art historical community, including limited funding resources for art libraries and projects internationally, and the cessation of the Getty’s support for the production of the Bibliography of the history of art (BHA) provided the catalyst for the Kress Foundation grant to the Getty Research Institute. A series of international meetings of art librarians, art historians, publishers and information specialists ensued. The goal was to review current practices, take stock of changes, and seriously consider developing more sustainable and collaborative ways of supporting the bibliography of art history in the future.

The Constantinople-born Mustafa bin Abdullah Kâtip Chalabi (popularlyknown as Haji Khalifa [1609–57]) was one of the most notable Muslim scholarsof his time. Kâtip Chalabi, as he is known as in Turkish circles, was a reformistscholar known for his intellectual contributions to the social sciences(viz., [Ottoman] history, geography, and economics) and his invaluable biobibliographicaltext Kashf al-Zunūn, which contains over 14,000 entries. Heis generally considered as one of Ottoman Turkey’s most productive authors, for his writings provided an invaluable input to “the classification of knowledge”systems. For this reason, the Istanbul Foundation for Research and Education(ISAR; http://isar.academia.edu), the Turkish Centre for IslamicStudies (ISAM; http://english.isam.org), and the Cairo-based Institute of ArabicManuscripts (MSC; www.manuscriptcenter.org) decided to co-host aMarch 6-8, 2015, symposium to celebrate and address his contributions. The joint Committee for the International Kâtip Chalabi Symposiumchose “Bibliography and the Classification of Knowledge in Islamic Civilization”as its main theme and set numerous goals, among them to (a) raise basicissues related to the Islamic classification of knowledge and bibliography, (b)reveal how this tradition can be reconsidered with respect to the discipline ofbibliography, which has shifted into a new phase due to theoretical and practicaldevelopments in today’s world; (c) provide the necessary basis for discussinghis scholarly achievements; and (d) offer foundations for futureresearch that would build upon his bibliographic encyclopedia Kashf al-Zunūn‘an Asāmī al-Kutub wa al-Funūn (The Removal of Doubt from the Names ofBooks and the Arts).Since it is beyond the scope of this brief report to comment on each presentation, most of which were delivered in Arabic and Turkish with simultaneoustranslations, I have decided to provide a general overview of a selectionof papers from each thematic session.Ahmad Shawqi Benbin (Al-Khazanat al-Malakiyyah al-Hasaniyyah, Morocco),one of the first speakers, addressed “Kashf al- Zunūn and InternationalBibliography,” which related directly to the symposium’s general theme of“Kâtip Chelebi: Philosophy of the Sciences of Bibliography and Classification.”While offering a historical context within which to view Chalabi’s intellectualoutput, he traced the science of bibliography back to Abu al-Faraj ...

This chapter tackles the reform of the law about the international litigation of intellectual property disputes. Ambitious reform proposals are designed to operate on a worldwide stage that provides an independent regime of rules for intellectual property and private international law. Moreover, the reform includes the applicable law and the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. Meanwhile, the reform of the Brussels I Regulation and other EU instruments are intended to go wider and operate as a model for adoption by non-EU States. The chapter explores the jurisdiction and model of reform of the CLIP Principles for Conflict of Laws in Intellectual Property, American Law Institute Principles, and Brussels I Regulation.
