This investigation studied the acute effects of copper pyrithione (CuPT) exposure on juvenile brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis. Morphologic changes, copper bioaccumulation, and markers of oxidative stress in gill tissue were studied. Juvenile brook trout were treated with one of six experimental doses of CuPT (2—64 μg/L) for 2 hours. A seventh group served as a control population. Inductively coupled plasma atomic absorbance spectrophotometry (ICPAAS) analysis demonstrates significantly increased levels of copper in gill tissue (p < 0.001). Results from scanning electron microscopy and histological analysis demonstrate the formation of club-shaped lamella, edema, fusion of secondary lamella, loss of microridge structures and epithelial exfoliation. Transmission electron microscopy revealed altered morphology of chloride cells, including the swollen appearance of mitochondria with disruption of internal cristae and lipid membrane disruption. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) assays demonstrated increased levels of lipid peroxidation products in gill tissue. Assays for the total antioxidant capacity of gill tissue revealed significantly lowered antioxidant levels. This data indicates that CuPT is potentially harmful to nontarget aquatic organisms at environmentally relevant doses.

Abstract Intergenerational book clubs have been successful in reducing ageist attitudes of younger adults (YA) while increasing feelings of social connectedness among older adults (OA; Lohman et al., 2003). We implemented both in-person (Nf11: YA=4, OA=7) and virtual (Nf8: YA=5, OA=3) modalities for an intergenerational book club to increase intergenerational interactions on campus, considering aging researchers’ claim of heightened ageism and exacerbated loneliness following the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic (Ayalon et al., 2020; Brooke & Jackson, 2020). Both groups met thrice over twelve weeks and completed measures on ageist attitudes (α=.83), engagement with the group (α=.91), and social connectedness (α=.91) each time. There was attrition in both groups (final meeting: Nf9 (in-person) and Nf3 (virtual)). To better understand overall motivations to participate and what factors may have contributed to attrition, we utilized content analysis with participants’ feedback to examine their motivation for joining, what they enjoyed most after participating, and what they would improve. Participants were motivated to join because they enjoyed reading; comparatively, they enjoyed group discussions and hearing different perspectives. Future recommendations include meeting more often, increasing the number and size of groups, and scheduling meetings closer together. The majority wished to continue participating. The data suggest future expansion of intergenerational book clubs on campus are desired to support age-friendly interactions and needed to further examine if these interactions can curb ageism and increase social connectedness among diverse age groups. Discussion will include recommendations regarding measures, lessons learned for an optimal protocol, and next steps.

By the summer of 1929, Norman Rockwell was a full-fledged success. At age thirty-five, he had been creating covers for the Saturday Evening Post for thirteen years. A generation of American youth had grown up beguiled by his illustrations for Boys' Life, St. Nicholas, and the Boy Scouts' calendar. For more than a decade, Rockwell's artistry had helped sell Adams Black Jack gum, American Mutual insurance, Sun Maid raisins, and Coca-Cola. As this commercial success modulated into social success, Rockwell, whose father had risen to middle-class respectability in the offices of a New York City textile firm, found himself living the good life in the artists' colony of suburban New Rochelle. The drab apartments and boardinghouses of his youth and adolescence had been left behind. He joined the Larchmont Yacht Club, golfed in clothes from Brooks Brothers, and hosted elaborate parties worthy of Jay Gatsby.

Between June, 1982 and October, 1984 traps were laid in the subnivean space of the optimal breeding habitat of Burramys parvus. Mean trapping success during both the snow-free and post-snow periods was more than 12%. No B. parvus were caught in traps set under the snow; the animals either have long periods of torpor and/or their activity is limited to feeding from their food caches, which are presumably located near to the nest (s). Food caches were similar to those of Burramys in captivity. In only one of 14 buildings located within 100 m of B. parvus habitat on Mt Higginbotham was B. parvus trapped during the snow period. In that building, the University Ski Club Lodge (USCL), where the mean trapping success was 28%, 10 females and 13 males were caught. Most of the females were caught during late October. About 50% of animals had been previously tagged during the snow-free period. During the snow period, the number of adult females moving to the USCL was few (8.1% of previous taggings, compared to adult males, 21%). Males returned to female breeding habitat during the breeding season October-November. These data suggest that the Burramys population is sexually segregated during the nonbreeding season.

Ancient Chinese books envelope Chinese culture and wisdom, and the titles of them serve as a window for readers to have a glimpse of their essence. A good title provides information like the topic or theme of a book along with aesthetic reading experience. In cross-culture exchanges, to intrigue the interest of readers or give a clue of the ancient books as to what they are looking for, the good translation of titles of ancient Chinese books finds its significance in this respect. This paper focuses on the translation strategies of the titles of ancient Chinese books from Chinese to English. The paper figures out the definition of ancient Chinese books from the perspective of history before it goes further to explore the classification and features of their titles. Given that the case studies are based on the examples from the complete English version of The Brush Talks from the Dream Brook by Wang Hong, this paper briefly introduces the book and its author, followed by the translation principles and strategies of the titles of ancient Chinese books. Semantic and communicative translation strategies are to be discussed with specific translation methods respectively. It is hoped that this paper could help readers realize the importance of title translation and provides some suggestions on the translation strategies of titles of ancient Chinese books in order to be accepted by target readers.

Annotation:
Most people know whether they are left-handed or right-handed, and usually base this assessment on preferences during one-handed tasks. There are several manual tasks that require the contribution of both hands, in which, in most cases, each hand plays a different role. In this specific case, holding an ice-hockey stick is particularly interesting because the hand placement may have an incidence on the playing style. In this study (n = 854), the main objective was to determine to what extent the way of holding an ice-hockey stick is associated with other lateralized preferences. Amongst the 131 participants reporting a preference for the left hand in unilateral tasks, 70.2% reported a preference for shooting right (placing the right hand in the middle of the stick); and amongst the 583 participants reporting a preference for writing with the right hand, 66.2% reported a preference for shooting left. 140 (16.4%) participants were classified as ambidextrous and 61.4% of them reported a preference for shooting right. This preference on the ice-hockey stick is closely correlated (uncrossed preference) to the way one holds a rake, shovel, or broom, or a golf club, but inversely related to the way one holds an ax and a baseball bat. The link between the way of holding the ice-hockey stick and eyedness or footedness is weak. These results are contrasted with the results reported by Loffing et al. (2014) and reveal the need to clarify the exact nature and requirements of the targeted tasks when studying bilateral asymmetric preferences.

In making rules for 1896, the new rules committee bars momentum plays (only one man on offense can be in motion, and he must be moving toward his own goal line) and restricts mass play (by requiring five men on the line at snapback).

This chapter explores how Dresser consolidated his position in scientific society through the 1870s, when he was working on A History of the Birds of Europe. He and his colleagues ‘ran’ English ornithology, being an elite club of wealthy, ambitious and immensely able ornithologist–collectors. Many of the leading figures lived together in a London townhouse as a kind of bachelor club, before they married and settled down. The chapter explores the power relationships that existed between ornithologists in London and those in far-flung places, taking Dresser’s relationship with Edwin Brooks as an example. Dresser’s ongoing contribution to bird conservation is explored. Some notable debates and disagreements in which Dresser was involved are explored, notably disputes over what scientific names bird should be known by, and relationships with Sharpe at the British Museum (Natural History). The chapter concludes with discussion of Dresser’s marriage and settling down.

Abstract Extreme overcrowding at state hospitals and political battles marked the 1950s and 1960s. Dr. Brooks considered himself a biological psychiatrist and participated in one of the first SmithKline & French research studies of the new drug Thorazine. Many patients responded well and were discharged, but many did not. Brooks attempts to help these nonresponders led to a successful rehabilitation program. It was based on an outpatient model for the inpatient group who were considered to be both “untreatable and unemployable.” This therapeutic community program had a horizontal approach not a hierarchical structure; focused on education and work; used shared decision-making, with interdependence prioritized over independence; encouraged ex-patient clubs; and presented living-learning opportunities at every social interaction and crisis. These strategies were copies of the work done by Maxwell Jones in England, which was published in 1953.

Annotation:
These gossipy columns of news from the capital, published in provincial newspapers, acknowledged the cultural and political power of the metropolis in a distinctively provincial way. They continued an early nineteenth-century writing style after it disappeared from London papers, developed it (for example through the invention of Parliamentary lobby journalism) and saw it re-adopted by the metropolitan press as part of the New Journalism. The writers were sometimes obscure hacks working for press agencies and publishers such as Cassell, sometimes established journalists such as Shirley Brooks, Edward Lucy or William Jerdan. Some London letters were syndicated to smaller newspapers, but more prestigious papers boasted that theirs was written exclusively for them. The London letter was rightly mocked by metropolitan commentators, for its gossipy style and its writers’ exaggerated claims to have lounged in every club and dined with every earl and actress. Yet it prefigured many traits of the New Journalism, was an important source of income for many writers, and shows how the relationship between metropolitan and provincial press was more than a simple one of core and periphery.

Annotation:
Abstract Although perhaps not fully appreciated by all ecologically oriented evolu tionary biologists, there is a deep and necessary inter-relationship between the knowledge of pattern (i.e. phylogeny) and process (i.e. mechanisms) in all studies of comparative biology and especially in those devoted to the analysis of biodiversity and adaptation. This has been eloquently argued in several papers and manuals (Felsenstein 1985; Coddington 1988; Brooks and McLennan 1991; Harvey and Pagel 1991; Hillis and Bull 1991; Stearns 1992; Lauder et al. 1993; Avise 1994) and we do not intend to rephrase all the arguments here. Instead, after briefly summarizing these arguments, we will take the proposal one step further: we will ask whether, in some instances, a phylogenetic pattern cannot in itself be indicative of an underlying evolu tionary process. We will reverse the usual procedure in which one seeks in the phylogeny a framework, a confirmation, or a control to an adaptive hypothesis, and we will focus instead on cases where the evolutionary hypothesis is actually revealed by the pattern. More specifically, we will focus upon the unresolved multifurcations which are found in an increasing number of molecular phylogenetic trees, and we will ask whether these correspond to explosive evolutionary radiations. If such is the case, then the analysis of the phylogenetic pattern will provide a major clue about the generation of biodiversity. The idea of extracting information on tempo and mode of evolution from molecular phylogenies is largely due to Harvey and co-workers (Nee et al. 1992, 1994). These authors have devised powerful methods to infer birth and death rates from the knowledge of the phylogeny of extant species (Harvey et al. 1994). Here, we will limit ourselves to the question of radiations as seen through molecular phylogenies, with special emphasis on the identification and elimination of possible artefacts leading to unresolved branching orders.
