Technology will continue to develop and change how journalism is practice, it will bring with it new challenges and learning curves. What will not change is the public’s demand for news and information, the kind that helps them manage their personal lives and make decisions as educated citizens in the public realm. While much discussion focuses on how we read the news, technology is changing the way we report the news. The image of a reporter showing up to a scene with a pen and a pad is iconic but will soon lose to the vestiges of time. This paper argues that the Newspaper media will continue to satisfy this public demand using the new tools of technological innovation. They will expand their audiences and engage them in novel and exciting ways. Therefore, justice was done to the discussion by providing answers to the following guiding questions: In what form are social media projected / displayed in prints and electronic media? What use have they been put into? For what purpose are they being used for? These are the guiding questions that the study aims to answer in this study. The study concludes that the Nigeria media sector can now be said to be equally exploring new media to leverage on its activities. Finally, the paper recommends that other newspapers in Nigeria should emulate The Punch newspaper and Channel TV in capturing new media in their daily print and broadcast contents.

Abstract Indigenous journalism can facilitate the inclusion of Indigenous voices in the public sphere, thereby contributing to social change. Contemporary Indigenous journalism is in part facilitated by the introduction and diffusion of paradigmatic media innovations, including the Internet, mobile technology, and social media. Based on a literature review, we investigate how media innovations are understood to facilitate Indigenous journalism and find that few empirical studies directly address this question. Analyses of Indigenous journalism, reaching beyond the potential for increased access to media and for amplification of Indigenous voice, are lacking. Furthermore, little research investigates how the appropriation of new technological affordances influence the production of Indigenous journalism. Our review also indicates that while Indigenous political participation can be facilitated by media innovation, these innovations can also serve to reinforce existing power relations. We submit that more critical analytical approaches are required to investigate how media innovations might facilitate the potential of Indigenous journalism for social change.

Journalism has been going through several major technological changes during the past few years. The pace of these changes is breathtaking, altering the practice of the profession in ways on thought of just decades ago. These changes have impacted on a wide range of activities from news gathering to dissemination and are known to birth many benefits. However, the profession faces some negative impact too. The study was conducted to ascertain the influence of technological innovation on journalism practice amongst Journalists in Owerri Metropolis. The objectives of the study amongst others were to find out the degree to which media practitioners use new media technologies in their day-to-day reportage and examine the influence these technological innovations have had on their news reportage and other media activities. The study was anchored on Technological Determinism Theory. The population of this study comprised 121 registered registered practicing Journalists in Owerri metropolis and this formed the sample size of the study using the Census principle. The Questionnaire was used for data collection while statistical package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to run the analysis of the data obtained. The study revealed that there is a positive significant impact of technological innovations on Owerri based media practitioners. The study recommends that orientation should be intensified at journalism schools and other allied training schools to educate Journalists to embrace new technological innovations.

As the journalism profession continues to reinvent itself, journalism professors struggle to keep up with technological advancements that provide their students with industry-relevant skills. This study seeks to understand how journalism professors find information about online tools for teaching, to learn about the efficacy of their current strategies for navigating the fractured information landscape. The diffusion of innovations perspective is applied to in-depth qualitative interviews with journalism professors. The study finds that early adopters are the most adept at seeking information about, and using, online tools. Consequently, they experience the least stress around information seeking about online tools.

The evolution of broadcast audio has been rapidly changing over the past 10–15 years with the advent of podcasts in the early 2000s. As with other media, podcast audio has been adapted for use within medical and specifically neurology education in the form of the Neurology Podcast since 2007. As podcasts were an initial step in the field of on-demand media, further technological evolution has resulted in increasing customization of a listener's audio experience. We believe a historical inflection point has been reached with the increasingly mainstream adoption of virtual assistant technology which allows for consumption of brief on-demand self-curated audio productions. As editors of the Neurology Podcast, we have introduced a new audio product to this technological landscape, the Neurology Minute. In doing so, we hope that curated on-demand educational audio will become a part of the daily routine of many practicing neurologists as we move into this new technological age.

Nigeria is among the African nations expected to migrate to digital transmission by 2020 as proposed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Existing media and communication studies have focused on the benefits and challenges of the digital migration process. However, scanty scholarly attention has been paid to the levels of awareness of, and preparedness for, digitization of broadcasting among broadcasters in Nigeria especially in Ibadan, Oyo State, being the host to the first television station in Africa. Driven by the Technological Determinism and Diffusion of Innovation theories as the framework, the study employed survey and in-depth interviews as the research methods to examine broadcast journalists’ levels of awareness, readiness for, and perception of, the challenges and benefits of digital switchover. A total of 300 copies of the questionnaire were administered to broadcasters (208 were returned in usable form and constitute the basis of analysis and discussion in the study) who were purposively and conveniently selected from ten broadcast stations in Ibadan. An Administrator from the National Broadcasting Commission Abuja and one Administrator each from the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State and Diamond FM, Ibadan were purposively selected as interview participants. Findings show that most broadcasters (57.7%) were aware of the digital switchover. However, 49.0% of the broadcasters confirmed that they were not adequately prepared for digital transition. Moreover, the broadcast journalists confirmed that, apart from skills, costs of content creation and procurement of digital technologies required by digital broadcast were the major impediments to digital switchover while they identified job creation, more revenue generation, richer contents, stronger bandwidths, and enhanced patronage as the benefits of digital broadcast. Relevant government agencies in charge of digital switchover in Nigeria should, through training and equipment procurement, motivate and empower broadcasters and broadcast stations to prepare them for a successful digital switchover.

As a result of the modernization of the information space and various information technologies, we have the opportunity to watch wars, natural disasters, sports events and others on television. Every day we receive international news from all over the world. A characteristic feature of the Internet today is media convergence, the technological fusion of content in various mass media. In recent years, the Internet has truly become a hub of convergence, a place where music, television shows, radio stations, newspapers, magazines, books, and movies are created, distributed, and presented. Today, computers and mobile phones are the most popular digital devices for online convergence, which can themselves create or stream books, movies, music, video games, and any other form of digital media. Today's global media market does not consist of any particular place, space or habit, it no longer has dimensions such as time and borders. It is permanently established in the digital world and cyberspace, on the screens of all computers and interactive televisions connected to the Internet, as well as mobile phones and still unbelievable inventions. In the digital age, where technologies are evolving every day, it is very important to adapt to innovations and news in time. In the modern world, the introduction of technological innovations in the means of mass communication is taking place rapidly, which has completely changed the forms of information dissemination. Today, accuracy, promptness, flexibility and interactivity are the key elements of modern multimedia journalism.

A theoretical perspective of technological determinism was used to assess what, if any, changes Twitter is causing in journalism news work. This change was assessed based on the responses of sports journalists around the country. Results indicated very little change in terms of the journalists’ perceptions, but different groups were using the new technology differently. Younger and broadcast journalists were more likely to see Twitter as having stand-alone value and use it in forward-thinking ways. Older and print journalists were more likely to use Twitter for traditional purposes such as promoting printed work on other platforms.

Convergence is a deep integration of knowledge, tools, and all relevant areas of human activities. As an inevitable condition, convergence has also changed a lot of aspects of mass media at the international, national, and local levels. This study elaborates how the local radios in Cirebon, namely Sindangkasih FM, Suara Gratia FM, and Cirebon Radio, are adapting to the convergence culture. This study seeks to demonstrate how the convergence culture can affect private broadcast media, which are not in the epicentrum of media in Indonesia. This study indicates that these three private radios in Cirebon have tried to adapt to the convergence culture in minimally three aspects, namely structural, information coverage, and news presentation or storytelling convergence. The structural convergence happened at the organizational structure of the radio, in which more direct and fluid coordination in the newsgathering and writing processes is applied. At the news coverage level, reporters and scriptwriters are responsible for managing news content for old radio broadcasts and new online media as well. At the news presentation level, the news is not only broadcasted but also reported on new online channels, such as websites and social media. These convergences have further created a more convergent newsroom, including integrating journalism workflows, applying multiskilled journalism and resource sharing, using various technological tools, creating interactivity with the audience, and expanding the audience reach. This case study researches newsroom convergence as a process at the Mail & Guardian newspaper and their online edition the Mail & Guardian Online. It focuses on the reporters’ and editors’ attitudes towards newsroom convergence and on cultural resistance against change; one of the major challenges in the process. With structured interviews, observations and questionnaires it was analysed that communication problems between the newsrooms, different production cycles and time management issues are other prominent difficulties. The case study furthermore provides a snapshot of the convergence phenomenon as a process in a particular South African news organisation. The outcomes could not only assist other news companies with convergence plans but also be used as a pilot study for further research on converged newsrooms in South Africa.

This study investigates how conforming and conflictual environment in media organizations contribute to the development of journalistic creativity. As a necessary prerequisite for institutional assimilation, media professionalism that learnt from school plays a stabilizing role in routine journalism operations. However, when principles disseminated in the classroom clash with practices in the newsroom, reporters typically find themselves caught in a fresh round of learning, relearning and even unlearning, a process that both demands conformity and opens up endless possibilities of creativity when rules are to be intentionally and tactfully breached. The two scenarios represent two distinct dimensions of the construct of journalistic creativity that are at odds with each other: consensual and conflictual. In explicating the concept, we bridge literature on media professionalism and political ideology in the hope of gaining a deeper understanding of how the tug of war between forces of compliance and those of oppositions is played out in the day to day work of journalism. This study adopts triangulation of methods, using both the in-depth interviews and surveys to explore the notion of journalistic creativity. The findings outline and explore the definitions and dimensions of journalistic creativity; identifies the creative process and the creative work within the media industry; and examines the relationship between political ideology, media professionalism and journalistic creativity. This study brings together two important aspects, conforming and conflictual environment, wherein media professionalism and political ideology are divided into two major categories, consistent and conflictual. In conclusion, this study contributes by putting forwarding the concept of journalistic creativity, the dimensions of journalistic creativity, and the major antecedents that contribute to journalistic creativity in the said media environments.

This study examines the history, development and diversity of news agencies. It studies the major agencies and pinpoints how smaller wire services that sometimes purvey niche news seek to offer a more diverse global news-flow. The linkage between news agencies and technological developments, and how wire services have helped advance technology, is examined since the first agencies began in the 1800s, up to the current era of the Internet. The rise of television and the subsequent ascent of the Internet prompted new demands for more diverse news procurement. This accelerated the convergence of different media and has exposed challenges and opportunities to news agencies, large and small. Alongside the telegraph, news wire services expanded from supplying news and information locally to being global players, helping the world shrink. The mediahistoriographical approach engages a critical examination of literature sources regarding the development of the major wire services, and some of the smaller players. The literature, along with interviews with news agency experts, provides the material to examine wire services. The study shows how some original agencies leveraged opportunities offered by their standing in powerful nations to become dominant transnational players. The ascendancy of the mega-agencies compounded limited news-flows from developed to poorer nations, while an expansion of diversified news-flows has not matched technological progression. This study concludes by recommending greater recognition of the importance of news agencies and more scholarly examination of them, as studies on them appear scarce compared to those on other media branches, such as newspapers, the electronic media and the Internet. More studies into the development of both mainstream and alternative news agencies would pave the way for a better understanding of how they function and could provide clues as to how they might be able to better sustain themselves as more diverse entities for the benefit of the public discourse. Through the above, this dissertation seeks to contribute, in a small way, to rectifying a knowledge disparity regarding a key component of the mass media, namely the news agency.

By the year 2020 the number of aircraft will have increased substantially and will be in Free Flight(that is, ATC will be devolved to the aircraft rather than being ground based). As an aid to navigation a more advanced form of collision avoidance will be required. This thesis proposes a method of collision avoidance planning using Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and Dynamic Programming (DP). It in essence enables Air Traffic Control (ATC) from within the cockpit for remote or uncontrolled airspace and is a step toward Free Flight. Free Flight requires quite different strategies than those used in the present collision avoidance schemes. This thesis reviews the approaches to collision avoidance used in the Air traffic navigation and to similar problems in other industries. In particular it considers the extended problem of collision avoidance within the framework of path planning. This is a key departure from the approach to aircraft collision avoidance used in the industry to date. Path planning reflects the real goal of an aircraft, which is to reach a particular destination efficiently and safely. Dynamic Programming is one solution method used in other industries for the problem of path planning to avoid collisions with fixed obstacles. The solution proposed herein for the Aircraft case uses Dynamic Programming applied to the moving obstacle case. The problem is first simplified by assuming fixed (static) obstacles for the cost minimisation algorithms. These fixed obstacles are then moved with time and the minimisation process is repeated at each time increment. Although this method works well in most cases, situations can be constructed where this method fails, allowing a collision. A modified approach is then used, whereby the movement of obstacles is included more explicitly (by modifying the shapes of the obstacles to represent motion) in the cost minimisation algorithm and a safe manoeuvre distance for each aircraft is used (by expanding the object size), to allow space for aircraft to execute safe evasive manoeuvres in difficult cases. This modification allows solutions which are complete (with no known cases of failure collision situations) and should be considered as an important extension to the current Aircraft and Collision Avoidance System (ACAS). The testing of these solutions is focussed on the most difficult cases, and includes aircraft movement in real space (that is simulations using real aircraft dynamics together with dynamic programming algorithms running in discrete time steps).

This research is based on a case study of MoAfrika, a news organisation that has embraced digitisation to produce and distribute content across three platforms. It draws upon observation and in-depth interviews to show how MoAfrika's embrace of a degree of convergence has led to a fragmentation for journalists whose daily work now include additional responsibilities and pressures of time. While there is an increase in the quantity of news disseminated via radio, newspaper and online, questions arise about the quality of such news produced in a multi-skilled, multiple media news production environment. The result is repurposed stories with little original content and augmented employee workloads without training and compensation. The study examines these issues drawing on theories of gatekeeping and convergence. The decision to include a news story at MoAfrika depends partly on which medium it fits into most easily. News values, deadlines, organisational norms and national trends are some of the considerations which factored into gatekeepers' decisions. Primary decision-making was made within a group which also considered expense and expertise, and where the Managing Editor made the final call and set the frameworks for how content played across the enterprise's three platforms.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This is a qualitative study on the question whether regional television can be feasible in South Africa with particular reference to the official process to introduce regional television (RTV), the various reports and opinions on the subject, new technological developments and the exploration of alternatives. It is an effort to make a contribution towards the debate about how the public broadcaster can deliver better dedicated services to the diverse language groups of the country wherever they live, while also keeping pace with the challenges of an ever changing global digital world. The study indicated that various public broadcasters internationally struggled to find a financially viable model for regional television to serve diverse communities. The general option was the use of “windows” – specific limited time allocated on national networks for regional break-aways. Yet, increasingly technology provided answers but still at a relative expensive fee for the average citizen. In South Africa the windows model was implemented for a limited period between 1996 and 2003. It was discontinued because of lack of financial support from the state. The researcher indicates how the process to implement regional television already started with transformation envisaged in the Independent Broadcasting Authority Act of 1993 through to the Broadcast Amendment Act of 2003 instructing the SABC to apply within nine months to the Independent Broadcasting Authority of South Africa (ICASA) for regional licenses that “should reflect the diversity of all sections of the population and represent the plurality of views and opinions of the audience” (ICASA, 2003a:11). ICASA published its Discussion Paper on Regional Television in September 2003 inviting comments while emphasizing the importance of serving the various language groups and providing local content. It recognised the problems concerning funding. Its Position Paper was released in November 2003. ICASA clearly took the view that the introduction of regional services in the various (especially marginalised) languages were imperative and that it had to be offered to the exclusion of English. The state had to fund the services while advertising would not be permitted. The study was approached within the framework of normative mass media theories, and in particular the developmental theory. Through content analysis the ICASA documents and the SABC’s application for RTV in December 2003 was assessed and the stark points of difference indicated, such as the use of English, local content (especially drama) and advertising income. By using the methodology of in-depth interviews and a social survey based on a structured questionnaire more information and perspective was gained. In its application for regional television the SABC suggested two channels for 10 indigenous languages in the nine provinces delivered through the outdated but cheaper analogue technology. Throughout 2004 ICASA and the SABC communicated in letters and at hearings to resolve differences without much success. The SABC’s main concerns remained funding and the lack of capacity and skills to offer the services required. ICASA decided in June 2005 to grant the SABC two regional licenses without issuing it until the funding issue could be resolved with the state. It relented to allow some advertising but remained opposed to the use of English. Towards the end of the study the researcher gives an overview of the fast developing international trends in digital broadcasting. Various options to serve regional communities are offered. News reports on international trends and the opinions of experts are then related to the situation in South Africa. One conclusion is that the state and the country would have to weigh up the cost of subsidising regional television to other pressing social needs of citizens. It appeared that the cost would be too high in the short term. Preparations for the staging of the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa might lay the foundation for more sophisticated and affordable services later.
ICASA se Standpuntdokument is in November 2003 vrygestel. Die aansoek is in Desember 2003 by ICASA ingedien.

Abstract: This present work tried to demonstrate the jornalism blogs validation processes, divided into internal practices which are developed by the bloggers, and external practices, represented by the audience's actions. This study covered a quick approach to the press trajectory in Brazil, evidencing the transformations that this activity has been through and the validation process of the practice related to the audience, and an approach to the blogs by the Communication theories, Political Science, and also by the Text and Discourse theories. From these different points of view, the variety of definitions they have was discussed: they are either seen as a program, either as an interaction space, either as a text. As a program, it serves as a tool of text publishing. As a space, it is considered an interaction environment. As a text, it is considered a discursive production. This way, it was certified the fact of journalism blogs being heterogeneous in nature: they are, at the same time, gender, discourse practice, tool (program) and environment (space). Two journalism blogs were selected for study: blog do Noblat and blog Reinaldo Azevedo. From the description and analysis of the objects, it was verified that the fact of blogs being considered journalistic doesn't imply that they are related only to this sphere of activity; in relation to the journalism field, there is a change in its discoursive practices, an adjustment to the new reality that has been built. The journalism blogs, in this context, represent a new way of acting in this field, featured by the coexistence of stable elements and elements that represent the emergency, the improvisation. It presents features from the traditional journalism such as the orientation for the periodical news publication, however, it enables new practices, such as the persona insertion and the more direct and frequent interaction with the audience, which certainly reflect on the current social and technological conditions. After more than a decade of its origin, the blog, nowadays, is considered a really productive object of study and has been deeply discussed under many distinct perspectives. This present work represents another attempt of understanding this phenomenon, with the purpose of widening the understandings of the discursive practices of the current man

Thesis (MTech (Public Relations Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011.
The purpose of this mini thesis is to investigate the research question, "What is the importance and effectiveness of public relations practice in obtaining coverage in a multimedia newspaper?" It is obvious that the introduction of the multimedia newspaper has affected the role of the public relations practitioner and the role of the journalists. But has it changed the manner in which public relations practitioners practice public relations (that is the influence of the multimedia newspaper on the public relations industry) and its value in the eyes of the multimedia journalist. The study will measure the multimedia editorial staff's opinion and perceptions of the multimedia newspapers content and public relations practice's impact on that content. The research is interested in whether the introduction of the multimedia newspaper has affected the role of the public relations practitioner and the journalists and whether it has changed the manner in which public relations practitioners practice public relations (that is the influence of the multimedia newspaper on the public relations industry). The research reviews the perceived value of public relations to journalists operating within the multimedia newspaper context.

‘New Journalism’ commonly designates the developments introduced in the late-nineteenth century by W. T. Stead (1849–1912), the campaigning and investigative newspaper editor. Innovations included typological, technological, organisational, and content changes that brought a more commercial and increasingly populist approach to the newspaper industry. The term is said to have originated with Matthew Arnold (1822–1888), the poet and socio-cultural observer, who, in his article ‘Up to Easter’, published in May 1887, famously characterised Stead’s form of journalism, and, by association, its readers, as ‘feather-brained’. In so doing, he highlighted a connection of influence between culture, politics, and society that had long since exercised his interest. This case study examines and challenges the long-established historiography of the term by considering earlier instances of the expression’s usage. It particularly highlights the editorial rivalries, journalistic discourses, and wider cultural debates that contributed to the emergence of the concept of ‘New Journalism’.

The Internet is a modern Pandora's Box which has exceptionally altered the way we disseminate and receive information messages, particularly news. Despite technological innovations being the apex of our history, it is undeniable that they pose new challenges and threats to a different degree. Hence, this study examined the risks and challenges faced by the Malaysian media professionals in this new age and how technological developments had impacted their work. Situated within the framework of the technological determinism theory, this study employed a qualitative semi-structured interview with thirteen (13) Malaysian journalists. This study found several challenges related to the journalists' safety and their professionalism. Media professionals, such as journalists and editors, often caught in a paradoxical and risky situations, which challenge the process of news production and deliverance ethically and legally. Journalists, who participated in this study, were pressured to produce more story ideas and deliver news assignments with shorter deadlines. This not only impacted the online news quality but also the credibility and transparency of the news organization.

Chapter 5 shifts the terrain to a prominent women-led journalism startup in an innovation context that has prioritized technological change over social structures and transformation. Science and technology studies frameworks for thinking about repair are necessary to explain how this commercial startup is not just innovating for the sake of saving journalism but to improve journalism as a tool for intervention and responsibility—to “move the needle” on what kinds of work journalism is able to do. These commitments are playing out particularly in fieldwork related to ownership and structuring, professional identity and innovations related to collaboration, and the deliberate focus of the startup on reconciliation as a public good in a settler-colonial society and media in Canada. We complicate the emerging focus in journalism studies on repair and reform as largely a function of the nonprofit and philanthropic journalism sector.

This chapter discusses that the integration of technology enabled South Americans to excel in sports. It looks into the achievements of aviators Jorge Newbery and Jorge Chávez, who both competed in Europe and North America. Technologically enabled sports were part and parcel of a sporting landscape characterized by transnational connections and nation-building projects. The chapter explains the technological innovations that created motorsports and cycling, which triggered greater media attention than endurance sports. It also explores the transformative effects of communications technologies, such as magazines, films and sporting commentaries by radio that were broadcast across South America in the late 1920s.

This chapter analyzes different stereotypes used by media when covering terrorism events. It discusses topics such as: media stereotypes of different terrorist groups, how media responses differ according to the type of terrorism, type of medium (e.g., print, broadcast, and on-line), location of the headquarters of the medium (regional subjectivity), the audience of the medium (national, transnational, or international), and the political affiliation and market orientation of the medium. This chapter attempts to provide an additional analysis of the way that these stereotypes are formulated by the use of basic and not so basic rhetorical techniques of the invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery applied. All the above are analyzed against the background of the basic social determinants of journalism: political pressures and censorship, technological possibilities, news management and public relations strategies of the army, economic pressures and professional culture, and the basic news values or news selection criteria (e.g., timing of the event, negativity, meaningfulness, and reference to elite nations and persons).

Abstract In both eras, technological innovations brought into being something else never before seen: international terrorism. At the turn of the nineteenth century, a small group of radical anarchists wreaked havoc across Europe and the United States. In the twentieth century, the same thing occurred with Islamist terrorists. In both epochs, new transportation and communication technologies provided the tools to conduct and coordinate internationalized destruction, as well as the means to broadcast the news of the events across the world in real time. Compounding these developments, immigration increased exponentially just when national communities had begun to struggle from the impacts of a global economy in transition. Fear that foreigners were taking away jobs and introducing dangers to the nation became intensified by new forms of sensationalized media. As tensions developed between immigrant groups and host-country citizens, anti-immigrant backlashes came to permeate politics and feed nascent defensive nationalism across the Global North.

Artificial Intelligence has gained tremendous momentum with factors such as increased computational capacity, big data analysis, and the development of deep learning algorithms. Artificial intelligence is redefining the rules of the game and the performance of athletes, entering the world of sports, which originates in human history. The use of artificial intelligence in sports can be summarized under the following eight key areas: Training Programs, Score Predictions and Betting, Health Applications, Tactical Strategy and Transfers Determination, Referee Decision Support Systems, Artificial Intelligence Playing Sports and Esports-Sports Journalism, Wearable Technology and Sensor Data. This close collaboration is reshaping the future of sport by fundamentally altering the experience of both athletes and fans. Combined with technological innovations, sports have the potential to provide a more efficient, effective, and entertaining experience. Sports and artificial intelligence can combine to deliver unforgettable moments for both athletes and spectators, but an approach that balances this evolution is required. Therefore, this close cooperation between sports and artificial intelligence should be managed with a perspective that attaches importance to ethical values and human factors.

The adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism and other communication practices brings up long-standing debates regarding the potentials of technological innovations for good and evil in society. Since the 20th century, when McLuhan argued that technologies help extend human capacity, media technologies have been regarded as liberating and empowering. Technologies aided human manipulation of mechanical and electronic processes in the media and communication industries. Arguably, social interactions were enhanced- extending audience reach, expanding scopes of coverage, altering the limitations of time and space, and bridging critical information gaps. By adding the power of computing to mechanical and electronic innovation of the past, as done with AI, far greater is the potential of media for good or ill in 21st-century society. The network societies are now better connected. Westernised societies are linked with those in the global south, individuals and media organisations alike are creating content. The resultant gluts of information further intensify the nature of global and social challenges. Given digital divide concerns being accelerated by AI, the Digital Dichotomy Theory (DD-Theory) is proposed towards understanding the inherent global media communication dynamics.

The teaching-learning process has undergone a major shift due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The situation has necessitated the use of online media more aggressively to reach out to learners and address their academic needs. However, the digital divide prevalent in many parts of the world is a stumbling block. Academic Programme delivery through technological interventions, having a judicious mix of online and broadcast media, was the solution, Indira Gandhi National Open University thought of while delivering their MA (Journalism & Mass Communication) Programme. // The university has been using various ICTs extensively such as radio, television, interactive radio counselling, broadcast-based teleconferencing, Google Classroom, Google Meet, Face book, WhatsApp, YouTube etc. in complementary and supplementary modes; in addition to printed Self Learning Materials. The use of digital online resources like social media, MOOCs and OERs mixed with traditional broadcasting channels paved the way for skill-oriented training and successful delivery of the programme.
