Conflict between the town and county of Bristol and the liberty of St Augustine's Abbey was largely the consequence of the failure of the county's founding charter of 1373 to recognize the separate existence of the liberty. In 1496 a confrontation between the abbey and the town resulted in an appeal to Council, and the production of The Great White Book, to record the evidence collected for the hearing. This allows both a reconstruction of the 1496 conflict and its precursors, and an interpretation of the Bristol political elite's rhetorical exploitation both of the conflict itself and of its representation.

The latest edition of the Medical Journal of Australia presents an article by Stephen Bolsin, a British anaesthetist now working in Australia (Bolsin 1998). He describes how, as early as 1987, there was talk behind closed doors in the United Kingdom Department of Health about worrying results of paediatriccardiac surgery at a large public hospital in southern England, the Bristol Royal Infirmary. In 1988 Bolsin began work there. He had not heard the whispers, butsoon became concerned. He noted the long surgery times overall, and the long duration of the period during which the heart was off-line (and hence deprivedof oxygen). He suspected this could be associated with higher death rates and injuries (like brain damage).

The pronunciation of the bath vowel is a salient feature of English varieties of the southwest of England, yet neither the status of the trap–bath split in traditional dialects nor ongoing change today is well understood. After reviewing the existing literature, we investigate the quality and length of low unrounded vowels in Bristol English on the basis of sociolinguistic interviews with twenty-five speakers. The picture suggested by these data is complex: there is evidence for a traditional length-only trap–bath split, for a length and backness split diffusing from the east and for a merger diffusing from the north. Some of these changes involve lexical diffusion, especially with loanwords and other distinctive lexical groups. Overall, the rich and contradictory data speak to the contested sociolinguistic status of these variables and to the need to examine individual patterns of variation closely to gain a full understanding of them.

SummaryWe assessed the effect of the installation of barriers on the Clifton suspension bridge, Bristol, England, in 1998 on local suicides by jumping. Deaths from this bridge halved from 8.2 per year (1994–1998) to 4.0 per year (1999–2003; P=0.008). Although 90% of the suicides from the bridge were by males, there was no evidence of an increase in male suicide by jumping from other sites in the Bristol area after the erection of the barriers. This study provides evidence for the effectiveness of barriers on bridges in preventing site-specific suicides and suicides by jumping overall in the surrounding area.

Banks, Donna. „“Race”, history, and the African Caribbean diaspora: identity and representation in Bristol, England“. Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/673640.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
This dissertation takes a transatlantic approach in its exploration of identity and representation by examining artistic practices within areas of the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States. Australia is also used as a point of reference to further the discourse on representation and identity. While the focus is on the African Caribbean diaspora, specifically the Windrush generation in Britain, this work also engages with other immigrant and marginalized BIPOC communities to emphasize the social, cultural, and political importance of art that is representative of the diversity that exists within contemporary cities. This is an ethnographic study that incorporates participant-observation, interviews, and archival research. It is postcolonial by its focus on place as defining identity, and fills a scholarly gap in the field of British history. It is grounded in the discipline of cultural studies, but is cross-disciplinary in nature, engaging anthropology, psychology, performance studies, and urban planning. In an effort to understand implicit bias, bigotry, and racism -all of which contribute to racialized spaces- this dissertation analyzes place names and the psychological connection people have with places. In examining artistic practices and institutions, the ways that public spaces are racialized and gendered are explored. To that end, public art, specifically community-engaged murals, are contrasted against traditional art institutions. It is argued that such murals challenge the racialized status quo and allow for representation that would otherwise be unacknowledged. In this work, the term art world refers to traditional art institutions such as museums and galleries, alternative spaces meaning unconventional venues, academia, and public spaces. The former have long received criticism within public discourse and academia for racism and sexism as women and nonwhite artists have been woefully underrepresented in art exhibitions and museum collections. By comparison, public art has not received as much scholarly analysis and has often been promoted as having wide appeal, acceptance, and appreciation. However, portrayals of public art as universally understood and relatable are false and can further alienate members of society who do not see themselves and their communities represented. Increasingly, individuals and groups are protesting against such public art and in some cases taking it upon themselves to remove contentious and offensive statues from their exalted position. While this dissertation draws from various geographic locations and populations, the focus is on Bristol, England, and members of the Windrush generation. In this regard, the country's colonial past, specifically its role in the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved people is examined. The concept of universal Britishness is interrogated for its racial and gendered biases. The racialized ways that public places are marked within Bristol are discussed, and creative placemaking through community-engaged murals is introduced as a means of disrupting the status quo. In examining how place naming and marking contributes to feelings of belonging and dis-belonging, critiques of previous creative placemaking studies are incorporated. To that end, gender, history, and "race” are added as place-defining parameters. Race relations in twentieth-century England are examined along with the ways that marginalized individuals of the Windrush generation negotiated themselves within dominant power structures, asserted their identity, and gained political strength. After providing a socio-historical analysis, this dissertation introduces the Seven Saints of St. Pauls® Art & Heritage Trail, which consists of seven large-scale murals of individuals of the Windrush generation. I argue that this heritage trail contributes to Bristol’s livability by providing positive and authentic representation of a community of Black Britons, while also effectively disrupting the racialized spatial status quo of a city with a history rooted in enslavement and whose public memories of this past are normalized and represented as a regular part of daily life in contemporary Bristol.

Kidd, Matthew. „Popular political continuity in urban England, 1867-1918 : the case studies of Bristol and Northampton“. Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/32132/.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
This thesis examines the transition between working-class radicalism and labour politics in two provincial English constituencies, Bristol and Northampton, between 1867 and 1918. By combining local case studies with a textual analysis of empirical material and a conceptual approach to ideology, it offers fresh insights into popular political change in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Britain. Its central argument is that, contrary to the prevailing historiography on labour politics and identity, a distinctive sense of class could shape working-class radical and labour strategies, languages, identities, and ideologies continuously between 1867 and 1918. In particular, it demonstrates that before the mid-1880s, working-class radical activists in Bristol and Northampton exhibited a non-adversarial sense of class that shaped their perceptions of the social order, their interpretations of radical ideology, and their relationships with both mainstream liberals and middle-class radicals. It also suggests that while working-class radicals came to use 'labour' to describe themselves and their organisations from the mid-1880s, this was primarily a rhetorical move rather than one reflecting a substantive change in their political identity. Over the next thirty years, labour activists in both Bristol and Northampton remained fiercely committed to the dominant strategy, the non-conflictual conception of class, and the political ideology that had long shaped local working-class radical traditions. In these constituencies, the Victorian tradition of working-class radicalism left an indelible mark on twentieth-century labour politics. This study has important implications for our understanding of political and ideological change in modern Britain. Firstly, confirming the existence of a decidedly working-class radical movement makes it easier to understand the rise of a class-based labour politics in late Victorian Britain without having to account for either discontinuities in popular politics or the re-emergence of a dormant class consciousness within the British working class. Secondly, establishing a line of continuity between working-class radicalism and later labour politics helps us to explain some of the tensions that characterised progressive politics in the Edwardian era. Finally, seeing working-class radicalism as a distinctive ideology with its own conceptual framework enriches our understanding of non-liberal progressive thought in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Annotation:
This research examines motherhood as a means of empowerment for East African Muslim immigrant women by exploring the ways in which Somali mothers collectively and individually respond to conflicting cultural constraints in their new host society of residence, Britain. In order to achieve this objective, this ethnographic study utilises qualitative mixed-methods of analysis of individual and group interviews, participatory observations and a homestay. This approach furthers the j understanding of the daily lived experiences of Somali diasporic mothers, the cultural barriers they face when attempting to support their families and the strategies they adopt in overcoming these constraints. This research looks at the mothering ideologies, meanings and practices of Somali immigrant woman and the ways in which their approaches to mothering are similar to, or different from, customs in Somalia. Similarities and differences between homeland and diasporic practices of motherhood reveal how Somali Muslim culture of motherhood is preserved and negotiated and which, if any, aspects of this maternal practice are reframed for local use in a British context. The study highlights the extent to which continuity of cultural practices, as well as their modifications, provides routes to empowerment for first generation Somali immigrant mothers in helping them adapt to their new environments and bicultural roles as Somali mothers in Britain. Somalis in the U.K. lack a suitable public forum for the expression of their identities and interests (Griffith, 2000;288), which is an added complication for the refugee, single Somali mother. The focus on lived experiences of Somali immigrant mothers gives this particular minority group of women a voice. Therefore, one objective of this research is to critically examine the lives of these immigrant mothers, the challenges they face and the role their native culture plays in their adaptation to the host society in the hope that this understanding of Somali motherhood will enhance the considerations given to these women at the policy formation stage in Britain. Furthermore, it will provide a greater understanding into the particular impact the "mother" role has on the successful integration of immigrant families. An additional purpose of this study is to examine conceptualisations of empowerment and how they can be interpreted contextually from the perspective of motherhood (Martinsson, 2007). This thesis contributes to discussions of empowerment, motherhood and mothering, Muslim culture and minority ethnic immigrant women/mothers. It will examine how the sense of Otherness disrupts their normative ideas of motherhood and how it is revised into something culturally productive.

Annotation:
There has been little interest in eighteenth century urban history in England and particularly in the significance of patterns of urban social structure during the transition from a traditional to a modern society. One reason for this is the intractable and fragmentary nature of the sources for this precensus period. In this study three types of source, a town directory, a Parliamentary Poll Book and the city rate and national tax returns for Bristol in 1774/5, were collated using nominal record linkage techniques to give a body of information which covered 80% of the city's heads of household. With the use of this database and various computer techniques occupation, sex, wealth, place of residence and voting allegiance were analysed. The results suggest that a professional or leisured suburban group was by this date well established in distinct areas of the city. The supremacy of the traditional élite, the overseas merchants, was challenged by this group, although the merchants themselves were in part joining the suburban dwellers. Poorer Bristolians still concentrated in dockside parishes and in parts of the city which were becoming increasingly unfashionable and homogeneous as the richer men moved out, though this process was not very far advanced and there was still a degree of mixing in the older city parishes. The economic structure of the city was changing with increased emphasis on services, professions and distribution. This increased disparities in wealth within the city and between the city and its hinterland and gave the ability to the rich to further their isolation from the poor by moving to the suburbs. The 1774 election pointed to the continuing importance of traditional influences (here of religion) In society, but also confirmed suggestions that the professions and distributors were drawing away from the mass of the populace. A revision of previous interpretations of the nature of Bristol society is necessary to accommodate this growing and important group - the emergent middle class. The thesis shows that a comprehensive computer-based study can make usable dubious sources (in particular fiscal records) and use them to revise interpretations of English urban communities at this date.

Monckton, Linda. „Late Gothic architecture in South West England : four major centres of building activity at Wells, Bristol, Sherbourne and Bath“. Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/34754/.

Annotation:
By 1360 the Perpendicular style was established as the successor to Decorated architecture. During the subsequent one hundred and eighty years, until the Reformation, major building work was carried out at four great churches in the south west of England. The complete reconstructions of St Mary Redcliffe, Sherborne Abbey and Bath Abbey, and considerable work to the precinct at Wells Cathedral during this period, form the basis for this thesis. Through a study of each of these major centres, the issues of workshop identity and stylistic trendsetters are considered. It is shown how the interpretation of documentary evidence has impeded an understanding of these buildings, which can be revealed by an analysis of the fabric. Based primarily on a methodology of buildings archaeology and assessment of moulding profiles, traditional assumptions concerning the chronology and patronage are challenged. The new chronology for works at Sherborne Abbey, and the redating of the commencement of Bath Abbey further our understanding of the nature of masons' workshops, patronage and stylistic development within a regional context. Introspection in masons' workshops during the 15th century, and retrospection in later design in the region, demonstrates a reliance on the innovations of the 14th century, and the significance of the parish church tradition in the region, respectively. The thesis concludes with a discussion on the influence of major church workshops on domestic architecture, and the impact of the dissemination of the lodges in the early 16th century.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Provincial town clerks and scriveners have hitherto been a neglected subject in the historiography of the legal profession, yet as this thesis demonstrates, they contributed significantly to medieval England’s legal and scribal culture. Arguing for a new definition of scriveners based on their legal and linguistic literacy, this fresh interpretation differentiates between scriveners, notaries, generic clerks and lawyers and modifies the existing tendency towards classifying scriveners purely on the basis of the work they did and the legal instruments they produced. The study not only rectifies a gap in our knowledge, but reconceptualises our understanding of the lower echelons of the legal profession by examining the work that scriveners did and the role that they played in the local legal administration of medieval England, and by extension, the ways in which they facilitated access to justice on several levels. Focussing primarily on Exeter, Bristol, Bridgwater and Southampton, this research for the first time reveals the identities of some of the many scriveners who worked outside of London and evaluates their activities in provincial England. In order to achieve this, the thesis considers the extent to which scriveners were an integral part of an urban legal service as members of the provincial secretariat. Underpinning the theoretical framework of this thesis are themes such as literacy, clerical identity and professionalization – all of which are examined through the prism of law, languages and access to justice. Grounded in a palaeographic and diplomatic approach to the manuscript sources, this research has yielded some surprising results regarding the essential role of provincial scriveners within the legal, political and administrative landscape of medieval England. Fundamentally, this thesis offers a new vision of provincial English scriveners and the influence of their work. Set against the backdrop of an increasingly ‘professional’ legal profession, the importance of provincial scriveners as the keepers and creators of legal memory is highlighted along with the impact that this had on the wider legal community of medieval England.

Abstract Despite the fact that Bristol was one of the largest cities in England, the musical establishment of the cathedral was one of the smallest. It was in its parish churches that the importance and prosperity of the city was reflected, there being according to Lieutenant Hammond in 1634 ‘18 Churches, which all are fayrely beautify’d, richly adorn’d, and sweetly kept, and in the major part of them, are neat, rich, and melodious Organs, that are constantly play’d on’.1

In 1840, the inauguration of the Great Western Railway in South England connecting London and Bristol, changed part of the outskirts of Bristol to a major railway hub and home of many rail-related activities. An area behind the station in between the railway, the River Avon and the Bath road, known as Temple Island, became restricted to rail use (workshops, depots or sheds) for more than 150 years, making it inaccessible and unattractive as the railway use decreased. The transformation of this area into a new centrally located neighbourhood is one of the most important urban development projects currently planned in Bristol. The new St Philips footbridge spans the River Avon, contributing to accessibility to the site and increasing the sustainable transport network of the city. The bridge, a 50m-span and 4-m wide steel beam with a forked geometry, seamlessly hosts a ramp for disabled and cyclists and a staircase to maximise functionality. The design approach to generate its shape was at the same time structural, aesthetical, and functional, innovatively solving a complex crossing problem.
