In recent years, the bride has become a representative fashion icon of clothing, cosmetic and entertainment industry in India. Designers like Sabyasachi Mukherjee, seem to project the bride’s access to bridal couture as a symbol of empowerment, emancipation and even nationalism. However, statistics would prove that Indian brides still carry the burden of cultural evils like dowry, domestic abuse, psychological pressures of marriage and child-bearing. Television shows like “Band, Baaja, Baraat,” lavish weddings of Bollywood actors like Anushka Sharma and Deepika Padukone have evoked new aspirational images in the imagination of the Indian middleclass. The present paper attempts to question the proliferation of wedding couture as a symbol of power and resistance to power. It aims to explore the route maps of capitalist desire and the seduction of women into this ambiguous role-play; are fashionable brides dressed in hot pants foolish consumers or artful minds who bend patriarchal structures even if for a short time? The paper will be premised on theories of popular culture, post-feminism, everyday feminism and cultural studies. It will enable us to address the reductive approach of contemporary capitalism towards complicated ideas of gender, class, caste, money, religion and region in Indian marriages. It will refer to ideas by Germaine Greer, Gloria Steinman, Stephanie Genz, Maitrayee Chaudhuri, Bharati Chibber, Santosh Desai to investigate into the empowering images of young brides as curated and exhibited by popular media.

Women’s marital surname change is important, in part, because it affects how often only husbands’ (fathers’) surnames are passed on to offspring: this, in turn, affects the frequency of these “family” names. Brides-to-be, novelly, from across especially western and central Canada (N = 184), were surveyed as to marital surname hyphenation/retention versus change intention, and attitude towards women’s such choices in general. Among women engaged to men, the hypothesized predictors of income and number of future children desired were positively predictive of marital surname retention/hyphenation under univariate analysis. Under multiple regression analysis using these and other predictors from the literature, previously found to be predictive of this DV under univariate analysis, only some of these other predictors were predictive. Of greatest predictiveness was the bride-to-be’s own mother’s marital surname choice (with brides-to-be, more often than would otherwise be predicted, following their mother’s such choice), thus suggesting a possible shift to a transmitted manner of bilateral descent reckoning, towards greater bilateral such reckoning, among a portion of the population. Reported, general attitude towards women’s marital surname retention was predictive of participant brides-to-be’s own reported (imminent) marital surname retention/hyphenation.

Introduction: The course for prospective brides, which is then equated with Marriage Guidance, hereinafter referred to as bimwin, is a mandatory requirement that must be carried out by the prospective bride and groom before carrying out a wedding because the prospective bride and groom who have attended are given a certificate as proof of graduation which is a requirement for marriage registration. The certificate referred to before being used is given serial number/registration.Purposes of the Research: This study aims to determine the urgency of a certificate of eligibility to marry as a formal requirement in marriage law. Methods of the Research: This research is normative legal research. The approach is carried out by reviewing the literature or literature studies according to the problem under study. Results of the Research: This shows that the implementation of marriage guidance is a must for prospective husband and wife couples who want to get married. Every couple who wants to get married is required to attach a certificate of eligibility to marry that has been obtained after participating in the marriage guidance program. Prospective bride and groom must attach a certificate of eligibility to marry which has been given a serial/registration number. The obligation to attach a certificate as one of the administrative requirements for marriage registration has been regulated in statutory regulations, but because there are no strict sanctions against prospective brides who do not attend courses, the mandatory arrangement to attach a marriage certificate is a mere paper issue and provides an opportunity for the prospective bride and groom to not taking the course.

This paper examines available literature of the practice of the mail-order bride industry, both within historical and contemporary contexts, with particular emphasis on Filipina women. With thousands of women immigrating to Western countries annually through the unregulated market of the marriage-order industry, scholars offer differing perspectives on the legitimacy of the arrangements. This paper analyzes the arguments made by scholars that the practice is inherently abusive, subjecting women to human trafficking. It also considers the arguments that mail-order marriages can be an empowering opportunity, citing the economic and social advantages afforded by immigrating to Western countries. Lastly, through available research which conducted interviews with mail-order brides, this paper examines women’s firsthand experiences and thoughts regarding the industry and their satisfaction within their marriages.

One of them is Girls Not Brides, a global network of stakeholders working to end child, early, and forced marriage. The other is the network that is working to improve menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in schools and that includes the MHM in Ten network. By providing a theoretically informed account of these two networks, the article contributes to the literature by providing accounts of additional networks that can help us deepen our understanding of the factors that shape transnational network emergence and political outcomes. The two networks in this study complement the case studies completed by the GHAPP because they focus on a complex and politically and culturally sensitive set of issues. Furthermore, this article bridges the gap between the scholarly literature and the literature produced by NGOs and international organizations by providing a theoretically informed account of the effort to end child marriage and improve (MHM) in schools.

In this case, ISIS does not only recruit men, but women are also often recruited by ISIS to become jihadist brides as a form of its jihad by using online media to implement a false reality. This research uses Post-Structuralism theory with its derivative concept, namely Simulakra by Jean Baudrillard. This ethnographic study seeks to position Turkish women within the lucrative global bridal industry, which is today heavily influenced by the style, aesthetics and consumer values of the American wedding. It will add to the existing literature by examining Turkish brides’ participation in transnational networks that promote the commodification of weddings in Turkey – a country where, for many, weddings were until quite recently low-budget affairs designed to maximize newlywed profits. We will explore how such networks establish and reinforce bridal rules and codes through wedding props such as gowns, cakes, jewellery, flatware, china and honeymoons. By unpacking the complexities, symbolism and meaning of the contemporary Turkish bride, we will move beyond simple binaries to examine how tradition and modernity overlap and intersect and how modernity is an intrinsic part of the evolution of traditional Turkish wedding practices. This study will also critique processes of (American) cultural assimilation and reveal how Turkish brides are negotiating western trends, influences and the ‘wedding-industrial complex’. Through lifestyle marketing and other industry practices, these networks are prescribing how Turkish women – regardless of their socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, educational and class status and cultural and religious beliefs – should perform the bridal role. Moreover, because of its ties to aesthetics, style and fashion, the lavish American-style wedding has also become the ultimate platform for the display of purchasing power in Turkey – a way to replicate the conspicuous consumption of the wealthier, leisured classes that, for many Turks, has become synonymous with modernity and elevated social status.

The present paper has been specifically designed to scrutinize the aspect of colorism in Toni Morrisons well acclaimed novel God Help the Child. African American literature is an academic body of writing produced by African descendants residing in America. The literary canon of African- American literature emerged in late part of 18th century in oral forms like sermon, gospel, music, jazz, blues and spirituals. African American writers have deliberately expressed their painful agony, racial segregation, social injustice and ill treatment which they tolerated in white American society. Toni Morrison was a prolific female novelist of African-American literary writing. Morrisons eleventh novel God Help the Child prominently deals with colorism, racism and child abuse. Conceptually, the term Colorism was coined by Alice Walker to address the superiority of lighter or white skin over the dark. Colorism has its genetic roots in racism because without racism the standardization of color conflict would not be exist. The novel unfolds the story of Bride, also known as Lula Ann who is born with dark black color. She receives ill treatment by her own parents and gets negative rejection because of having black skin. Brides dark color ruins her golden childhood period. Louis Bridewell rejects Bride from accepting as his baby. Similarly, Sweetness breeds Bride with harsh treatment and cruelty. AbstractArguably, the most famous myth told about Persephone is her abduction and marriage to Hades. The story clearly articulates the strong connection between marriage and death, and this episode became significant in both literature and religious practice in the wider classical Greek world. Reference to the story of Persephone’s abduction came to be used as a shorthand for evoking this connection, particularly in myth. This paper discusses two particular ways in which Persephone’s narrative was used in marriage and death. I examine the pre-marriage offerings to Persephone at Lokroi Epizephyrioi, in southern Italy, and the tradition of Athenian girls who died unmarried being buried as brides. These cultic instances frame a discussion of Brides of Hades, particularly in tragedy. Overall, I conclude that these girls do not attempt to replace Persephone, but rather to imitate her: they ‘play the role’ of Persephone at various stages of her own abduction and marriage story.

Stunting is a major nutritional problem that has not been resolved. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2022, the prevalence of stunting was 22.3%, or around 148.1 million. Stunting is influenced by maternal health in pregnancy, infants under five, and maternal health in the preconception period. This research aims to determine the early detection of stunting risk in brides. This study is a literature review using PubMed and the Google database to identify articles published in 2015–2023. The main objective of this study was to determine the risk factors for stunting in the preconception period. Although many studies discuss stunting, most tend to discuss the causes of stunting in the prenatal and infant-toddler phases. In addition, the preconception period has a major contribution to pregnancy, which will affect the health of the fetus in the womb. If not addressed, it will cause trans-generational problems. Prevention of stunting is more effective than treatment of stunting. Stunting can be prevented since the preconception period, especially in prospective brides, by detecting early screening for stunting risk. Early screening for stunting can be done by identifying factors that are at risk of stunting, including age, BMI, anemia, mid-upper arm circumference, and smoking behavior.

Education is among the most impacted factors negatively associated with child marriage (CM). Girl’s education affects their well-being, home community, and shows effects at the country-level. For this study, child brides (N=30), living in a remote rural area of Pakistan where child marriage is part of the culture and religious traditions of the community, provided responses to a standardized survey protocol. Correlation and regression analyses of the data showed three variables explained the large majority of the variation in the respondents’ education levels post child marriage (R2 = .869, F(4, 25) = 48.988, p < .001). The variables tested aligned with the Potential Indicators of Gender Inequality in Education, by Domain. A child bride’s perception of the legal age for marriage in Pakistan showed the main effect, while her level of responsibilities after marriage had a negative significant relationship with the dependent variable, Qualification/Certificate level at the time of the study. Finally, when the family members held the power of decision over a child bride’s education, the mean value of the participants’ education levels went up. A deep review of the literature provided insights into areas of family and community norms, Pakistan’s educational context, and influences from institutions outside education. Vaughn’s indicators of equitable practices for girls’ education provided a frame to organize the review of the literature. The paper used a lens of honor cultures’ to understand the social influences on the practice of child marriage. Recommendations and implications provide practical applications for next steps.

This research reviews the Peta Kapanca, an ancient tradition that guides marriage in Bima culture, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This research aims to understand the cultural values, customs, and rituals associated with the Peta Kapanca newlywed procession. A qualitative approach was used in this research, where the data collection methods were in-depth interviews and a literature review. The results showed that Peta Kapanca has a central role in guiding prospective brides and grooms in facing the transition stage toward marriage. The rituals involve family, traditional elders, and community leaders to provide the future bride and groom support, advice, and direction. Values such as cooperation, respect for ancestors, and family togetherness are the main foundations for implementing the Peta Kapanca. Overall, the Peta Kapanca is an integral part of the social and cultural life of the Bima people. This tradition plays an important role in preserving cultural values and local identity. Therefore, to ensure the continuity of the Peta Kapanca, the community and government need collaborative efforts to preserve and appreciate this valuable cultural heritage

We explored the impact of social support on revisiting intention of people who were from minority groups, an issue that has largely been ignored in the existing literature. Our sample included 417 people with physical disabilities, or with a low income, foreign brides, or people who were widowed. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses. The results indicated there was a significant negative effect of leisure constraints on revisiting intention for those without social support. Thus, social support mitigates the influence of leisure constraints on revisiting intention.

With a good information system can facilitate the process of applicants or employees in the service process. For offices with a lot of data, processing with technology is very helpful. This online bridal registration system is a web-based system that is useful for assisting prospective brides in registering their marriage. The process of registering a marriage at the KUA in Jayaloka Regency still uses a manual process where the bride and groom come to the KUA to register their marriage and collect information about the terms of marriage. Therefore, the rapid development of information technology encourages the author to register the bride and groom online so that they can help the bride and groom. The design of this study was to create a registration website and data collection was carried out through observation, interviews and literature review. The programming language is PHP and the UI design software uses waterfall. Create a database with MySQL using XAMMP. Purpose This paper aims to provide an overview of transnational bride trafficking from Vietnam to China, enriching the human trafficking literature with the Vietnamese perspective. It proposes to analyze this bride trade in the developmental context and outline how the supplies and demands for brides root in socio-economical-legal forces such as poverty, lack of law enforcement and culture. This study also brings to attention the involvement of organized crime and collusion of government officials as the main drivers of the trafficking activities. Design/methodology/approach This paper opts for an analytical study using published data, including newspaper reports, previous research studies and public records. The data were complemented by the analysis of the trafficking victim’s stories, descriptions of trafficking activities, copies of statistics and the examination of the legal framework that concerns human trafficking in China and Vietnam. Findings This paper provides empirical insights into how transnational bride trafficking is brought about. It suggests that while the vulnerability to trafficking stems primarily from developmental forces, the most crucial element that makes this transnational bride trafficking possible is the involvement of organized crime. Research limitations/implications Because of the chosen research approach, this paper lacks originality in data, and some data might not be up-to-date because of the lack of sufficient interest. Practical implications This paper includes implications for developing a more nuanced understanding of transnational bride trafficking and the development of new policies that could remedy the issue. Originality/value Despite the fact that Vietnam is among countries most affected by human trafficking, there are only a few studies from the Vietnamese perspective. This paper fulfills the need to enrich the debate by providing an informative work on bride trafficking in Vietnam.

Abstract In this article, we show the importance of both social and economic imperatives for authors and printers active in the genre of wedding poetry, and the interaction between these imperatives. The lack of systematic evidence and the fragmented nature of previous research has led to the dominance of tentative interpretations in studies of wedding poetry. Necessary, therefore, is a broader and more inclusive approach of the genre as a whole. We have thus combined a literature review with a quantitative analysis, exploring metadata of over 3,500 publications of wedding poetry (year of publication, names of brides, grooms, printers and authors) in the Dutch Republic between 1600-1760.

AbstractThe mahr or sadāq is the only marriage gift required under Islamic law. But Islamic law did not necessarily determine actual marriage settlements, even in early Muslim societies. In this essay, I compare the early Islamic legal literature with the pattern of matrimonial gifts recorded in marriage contracts and divorce deeds preserved from early Islamic Egypt. In marriage settlements recorded in the papyri, the groom gave a sadāq that was divided into advance and deferred portions, and brides brought to the marriage a counterpart dowry (jihāz or shiwār). These marriage settlements, which were common to Muslims, Copts and Jews, resembled the Egyptian marriage settlements of late antiquity. The Islamic legal literature preserves the objections of contemporary jurists, including Mālik, to these Egyptian practices, which they initially regarded as an objectionable innovation. Eventually, the local traditions were incorporated, albeit with modifications, into the legal discourse.

They defend physical beauty and sexual pleasure, praise learned brides, and assert the importance of mutual affection, revealing a complex picture of ideal gender relations in courts. Against the ancient and Christian anti-marriage ascetic traditions, humanists offer biblical, philosophical, political, economic, and hedonistic arguments in defense of marriage.

AbstractUntil now no one has outlined the matrimonial politics of the Davidic dynasty as a whole. A closer look reveals these policies to be a clear-cut means of stabilizing David's dynasty and expanding its territory and power. As far as we know, all of the marriages of Davidic crown-princes are comprehensible in the political and regional context of the time. In every case, choosing the bride for the crown-prince of Jerusalem and Judah was politically goal oriented. Selection of the royal bride throws light on the sometimes weaker, sometimes stronger (more independent) position of the kings as well as the possibilities and aims of Davidic politics. Mentioning the kings's mothers makes clear that the Bible can supply valuable information for the investigation of the history of Israel and Judah.

The article is devoted to the formation of the author’s intention in A. N. Ostrovsky’s comedy Rich Brides. The play was originally published in 1876 in the February issue of Otechestvennye Zapiski, but before publication it had been staged at the Alexandrinsky (St. Petersburg) and Maly (Moscow) theaters. The comedy provoked very contradictory, and sometimes rude, judgments from critics. In 1876, A. N. Ostrovsky, possibly under the influence of criticism, attempted to partially change the text of the play, but not all the author’s corrections were included in the final version of the comedy, published in 1878. Manuscript departments of the Russian State Library and the Institute of Russian Literature preserve draft autographs of the play, testifying to the formation of the author’s intention. To describe the main stages of work on the text, tracing the nature of the main changes, later saved or rejected by the playwright, is the main task of the presented work.

Abstract Adolescent marriage was the norm for the Jewish girls of medieval France. The frequency of death of these brides was high, which led R. Tam to decree that in the event of death during the first year of marriage all dowries shall be refunded. This edict contradicted Talmudic law that awarded the husband rights to his wife’s estate. Factors that led to the decree include personal tragedy, Palestinian custom, Roman law, and norms of royalty and feudal society. The edict of R. Tam was accepted in France and the Rhine Valley communities. However, East German communities rejected the decree by means of clever literary devices, including the invention of the author’s retraction. The conflict surrounding the Dowry Edict opens a portal to the spiritual world of the Eastern communities during their formation.
