Abstract Objectives Colon cancer occupy third rank in the United States and its incidence is inversely associated with high consumption of plant-based diet including whole grains. Sorghum is one of broadly cultivated crops and the bran of sorghum contains high content of bioactive compounds including polyphenols. The current study was designed to examine if different type of high phenolic sorghum brans (PI570481, SC84 and Sumac) suppress tumor formation in genetic colon cancer mouse model and elucidate related biochemical and molecular mechanisms using human colon cancer cells. Methods Fifty-three ApcMin/+ mice (4-week old male and female) were assigned and provided with one of following diets; 1) control (n = 11), 2) low dose of PI570481 (7.5% w/w) (n = 11), 3) high dose of PI570481 (15% w/w) (n = 11), 4) SC84 (15% w/w) (n = 10) and 5) Sumac (15% w/w) (n = 10) for 6 weeks. All mice were treated with 2% dextran sodium sulfate for one week in drinking water at 5 weeks of age. The number and size of tumor were measured from the large intestine. For in vitro study, human colon cancer cell lines were treated with different doses (0, 1.25 and 2.5 mg/mL) of high phenolic sorghum bran extracts (PI570481, SC84 and Sumac). Transcriptional activity of β-catenin was analyzed by measuring luciferase activity of reporter gene (Top and Fop flash). Gene expression was analyzed by Western blot using specific antibodies. Results Feeding three different types of high phenolic sorghum brans (PI570481, SC84 and Sumac) to ApcMin/+ mice for 6 weeks did not change body weight and cause any toxicity. The tumor number and tumor load in the large intestine were significantly decreased in the mice treated with three types of high phenolic sorghum brans. Regarding mechanisms, treatment of high phenolic sorghum bran extracts repressed transcriptional activity of β-catenin and IGF-1-stimulated phosphorylation of Akt in human colon cancer cells. Conclusions Our data propose a potential use of high phenolic sorghum brans as diets for the prevention of human colon cancer. Background: Rich in dietary fibers and beneficial to health, wheat and oats have been a popular part of the human diet. The whole grain is rich in protein, lipid, starch and phenolic compounds concentrated at the level of the peripheral layer of the bran. Aims: The natural compounds and the antioxidant potential of two different species of soft wheat and oat bran on the Algerian market have been studied in this work. Wheat bran was furnished by Azzouz’s Cereal and Dried Vegetable Cooperative (CCLS) being the most commercialized oat bran in Algeria. Material and Methods: Some parameters and bran biochemical compounds such as proteins, cellulose, ash content, phenolics, and antioxidant potential (DPPH) were determined using different techniques and methods (infra-red approach spectrophotometer, and flame spectrophotometer). Results: The results obtained showed that studied soft wheat bran was rich in protein (17.36%). Concerning cellulose, a high value was recorded for this bran variety 11.3%, which was lower for oat bran (2.7%). The maximum concentration of potassium and sodium was observed in the soft wheat bran variety; 3.16 mg/L, 30.36 mg/L respectively. The levels of the phenolic compounds were 0.720 ± 0.050 mg EAG / g and 1.101 ± 0.01mg EAG / g for the oat bran and the soft wheat bran respectively. These results underline that both studied brans contain significant levels of compounds essential for consumer needs. Conclusions: The studied soft wheat bran variety is considered to be an important source of phytonutrients. Keywords: Wheat, oat, antioxidants, radical scavenging, phenolic contents.

The B-Raf proto-oncogene serine/threonine kinase (BRAF) gene is the most frequently mutated gene in malignant melanoma (MM) and papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and is causally involved in malignant cell transformation. Mutated BRAF is associated with an aggressive disease phenotype, thus making it a top candidate for targeted treatment strategies in MM and PTC. We show that BRAF mutations in both MM and PTC drive increased expression of oncomiR-3151, which is coactivated by the SP1/NF-κB complex. Knockdown of microRNA-3151 (miR-3151) with short hairpin RNAs reduces cell proliferation and increases apoptosis of MM and PTC cells. Using a targeted RNA sequencing approach, we mechanistically determined that miR-3151 directly targets TP53 and other members of the TP53 pathway. Reducing miR-3151’s abundance increases TP53’s mRNA and protein expression and favors its nuclear localization. Consequently, knockdown of miR-3151 also leads to caspase-3–dependent apoptosis. Simultaneous inhibition of aberrantly activated BRAF and knockdown of miR-3151 potentiates the effects of sole BRAF inhibition with the BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib and may provide a novel targeted therapeutic approach in BRAF-mutated MM and PTC patients. In conclusion, we identify miR-3151 as a previously unidentified player in MM and PTC pathogenesis, which is driven by BRAF-dependent and BRAF-independent mechanisms. Characterization of TP53 as a downstream effector of miR-3151 provides evidence for a causal link between BRAF mutations and TP53 inactivation.

Nele rastrea-se processos de criação na perspectiva de uma esquizoanálise de memórias, tensionando, entretanto, sem negar frontalmente a ideia de santidade impressa na laicidade da escola, num modo de estetização do espaço escolar e, alhures, produzir linhas de fuga singularizantes a partir do fotográfico, cartografando algumas passagens dessa trilha, embate entre santidade, pérolas e porcos em meio ao lamaçal sombrio e fecundo do processo de vir a ser professor, para alcançar um certo modo de ser metaestável. Adota como método a cartografia e toma a esquizoanálise como inspiração processual da análise. Aponta como resultados centrais emergentes: percurso cartográfico desse jogo de sombras permite experimentar ser encharcado pelos acasos, pelas pequenas formas dos acontecimento microfísicos, na educação básica como docente de arte, pela luz que chega, pelo peso do ferro que morre, pela leveza do ar, tudo isso retorna como uma energia potencial pelo fotográfico, que rearranja esses vetores de força e produz uma existência outra, uma existência artística, encarnada por inteiro no presente.

Rice bran is a by-product of the rice milling process. It contains a high concentration of protein. Rice brans are frequently utilized as feed cattle, fertilizer, and fuel. However, their application as human nutrition supplements is uncommon, and the necessary process for this purpose is yet to be established, including the drying process. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the spray-drying parameters, the inlet temperature, inlet flowrate, and inlet air flowrate, on rice bran protein (RBP) powder and optimize it using response surface methodology (RSM). A thermal water-based extraction method was utilized prior to the drying process. The correlation between the spray-drying parameters, i.e., the inlet temperature (120 to 210 °C), feed flowrate (5 to 55%), and air flowrate (246 to 670 L/h), and the RBP yield were investigated. The quality of the RBP powder was evaluated based on acid amino profiling in the mixture through de novo peptide sequencing. The optimized operating conditions for the maximum yield of RBP powder (25.7 g RBP/100 g RRB) are 178 °C, feed flowrate of 25%, and air flowrate of 450 L/h. The main peptides that contribute to RBP powder protein are globulin and glutelin; meanwhile, prolamin is believed to degrade during the drying process. The process also produced protein sugar, helping to produce fine particles powder without the drying agent.

Individuals with atypical breast shape/size often find it quite challenging to obtain a comfortable, supportive, and fitted bra off-the-shelf. They include people with very large breasts, who have significant breast asymmetry, and/or have undergone mastectomy or mammoplasty. This paper provides insights in their challenges and attempts to fill the gap in terms of critical review of the current state of knowledge around the topic of bras. Poor and ill fitted bras are associated with breast, chest and shoulder pain, embarrassment, and an overall reduction in quality of life among others. Building upon the advantages and limitations of solutions to improve the fit, support and comfort of bras found in the literature, this paper proposes strategies to solve these challenges. As the problem is multidisciplinary, a human-centered interdisciplinary approach is key to ensure that all aspects are considered at all stages of the process. A modular design allows selecting the fabric characteristics based on the requirements of each bra part. In terms of materials, stretch woven fabrics offer a large potential in the production of bras to enhance the support provided by areas such as the under band and back panels. Bespoke manufacturing takes into account the specificities of each individual. The road map proposed here will contribute to enhance the quality of life of individuals with atypical breast shape/size.

Cette étude s'insère dans le cadre du projet FAERIE qui a pour but la réalisation d'une fonction d'ergonomie physiologique dans un système C. F. A. O. Cette fonction vise à simuler le comportement de l'Homme dans son environnement. L'un des principaux aspects du comportement est le mouvement. La présente étude analyse les différents problèmes liés au mouvement et propose une approche originale. L'accent est mis sur la réalisation d'un mouvement et particulièrement sur le délicat problème du naturel. Les différents modèles utilisés sont présentés et les conditions de leur généralisation sont étudiés. L'aboutissement de cette approche est une synthèse du mouvement naturel. La génération de mouvement constitue la base de l'outil d'évaluation ergonomique proposé. Il est alors possible d'évaluer les dépenses musculaires, energétiques,. . . Qui sont nécessaires à l'exécution d'un mouvement. Des notions telles que la fatigue et le confort peuvent être appréhendées. Une attention particulière a été portée sur la facilité d'utilisation de la fonction réalisée. Son emploi ne doit pas requérir de connaissances ergonomiques particulières. L'intégration de cet outil au système C. F. A. O constitue alors un atout majeur pour la prise en compte des contraintes ergonomiques pendant la conception.

Les forces et faiblesses des robots différant grandement de celles des humains, les robots chirurgicaux ont plusieurs avantages qui expliquent leur utilisation croissante en salle d'opération. Cependant, la robotique chirurgicale demeure un domaine qui comporte de nombreux défis. Plutôt que de travailler directement au niveau de l'application sur un robot spécifique, il a été décidé de concentrer les efforts sur une des composantes mécaniques qui impose des limitations aux interactions humain-robot : l'actionneur. Dans cette optique, un prototype de bras interactif a été réalisé en utilisant la technologie de l'Actionneur Différentiel Élastique (ADE), un actionneur élastique haute-performance de faible impédance mécanique intrinsèque. Le bras à trois degrés de liberté, dont les actionneurs sont contrôlés en impédance, pourra servir à étudier la façon dont les interactions humain/robot permettent d'augmenter les capacités humaines de manipulation. Le contrôle d'impédance de l'ADE a été utilisé en tant que noyau central lors du développement du contrôle du bras interactif. L'analyse des performances dans la plage de fréquence d'intérêt suggère un bon comportement de l'actionneur lorsque l'impédance mécanique demandée est faible.Les premiers essais d'interaction humain-robot avec le bras interactif suggèrent que l'ADE est tout indiqué pour une telle application. Le contrôle d'impédance développé a pu être utilisé dans le cadre d'une autre application robotique : le contrôle des axes de direction du robot mobile omnidirectionnel AZIMUT[indice inférieur 3].

Depuis quelques années dans le domaine du cyclisme de route, le confort des vélos est devenu un élément au moins aussi recherché que la performance. Le confort est une préoccupation majeure pour 90 % des cyclistes. Les cyclistes sur route passionnés enfourchent leurs vélos pendant plusieurs centaines d’heures chaque année. Ils souhaitent donc utiliser un vélo qui aura la capacité de réduire les vibrations générées par la route. Un sondage réalisé auprès de 320 cyclistes a montré que les vibrations transmises au niveau de la main sont considérées comme la plus grande source d’inconfort. Ce travail a permis de développer une approche permettant d’estimer le niveau de vibrations transmis au niveau de la main du cycliste par sous-structuration. Les méthodes de sous-structuration permettent de prédire le comportement dynamique d’un assemblage de structures par caractérisation de chacune des structures prise séparément. Bien que ces méthodes existent depuis des dizaines d’années, aucune étude n’avait investigué l’assemblage de deux structures par sous-structuration lorsqu’une d’entre elles est l’Humain. L’approche proposée consiste à mesurer la réponse biodynamique du système main-bras en posture cycliste et à prédire la puissance vibratoire au niveau de la main du cycliste à l’aide d’une méthode de sous-structuration. Cette thèse présente les éléments importants issus de ces travaux. Deux méthodes de couplage ont été identifiées et testées pour prédire l’influence du système main-bras sur le comportement dynamique de structures mécaniques simples. La variabilité de réponse du système main-bras de plusieurs sujets a été analysée. Des caractéristiques communes à plusieurs sujets ont été identifiées dans la réponse biodynamique de leurs systèmes main-bras. Finalement, l’importance relative du cycliste par rapport au vélo sur le comportement dynamique de l’assemblage vélo – cycliste au niveau de la main a conduit au développement d’une méthode de caractérisation de la réponse vibratoire des vélos seuls.

Ce mémoire présente le développement d’un algorithme de cinématique d’interaction dans un contexte de coopération humain-robot. Cet algorithme vise à faciliter le contrôle de bras robotiques en évitant les collisions, singularités et limites articulaires du robot lorsqu’il est contrôlé par un humain. La démarche adoptée pour l’ateinte de l’objectif est le prototypage d’un algorithme sur une structure robotique simple, la validation expérimentale de ce prototype, la généralisation de l’algorithme sur une base robotique à 6 degrés de liberté et la validation de l’algorithme final en le comparant expérimentalement avec un algorithme similaire. Premièrement, le prototype d’algorithme est développé sur un bras robotisé Jaco, de l’entreprise Kinova, duquel le poignet a été retiré. Cette architecture permet le déplacement de l’effecteur selon 3 degrés de liberté en translation. L’algorithme développé sur cette base robotique permet : — l’évitement des collisions avec les objets présents dans l’environnement de travail, — l’évitement des limitations articulaires — et l’évitement des singularités propres à l’architecture du robot. Les performances de l’algorithme sont ensuite validées lors d’expérimentations dans lesquelles il a été démontré que l’algorithme a permis une réduction d’approximativement 50% du temps de complétion d’une tâche donnée tout en réduisant l’attention que l’utilisateur doit porter sur le contrôle du robot comparativement à l’attention portée à l’accomplissement de la tâche demandée. Ensuite, des améliorations sont apportées à l’infrastructure : — une méthode de numérisation de l’environnement de travail est ajoutée, — un meilleur algorithme de détection de collisions et de mesure des distances minimales entre les membrures du robot et les obstacles présents dans l’environnement de travail est implémenté. De plus, une méthode de balayage de l’environnement de travail à l’aide d’une caméra Kinect ainsi qu’un algorithme de segmentation de nuage de points en polygones convexes sont présentés. Des tests effectués avec l’algorithme prototype ont été effectués et ont révélé que bien que des imperfections au niveau de la méthode de balayage existent, ces modifications de l’infrastructure peuvent améliorer la facilité avec laquelle l’algorithme de cinématique d’interaction peut être implémenté. Finalement, l’algorithme implémenté sur une architecture robotique à six degrés de liberté est présenté. Les modifications et les adaptations requises pour effectuer la transition avec la version initiale de l’algorithme sont précisées. Les expérimentations ont validé la performance de l’algorithme vis à vis un autre algorithme de contrôle pour l’évitement de collisions. Elles ont démontré une amélioration de 25% en terme de temps requis pour effectuer une tâche donnée comparé aux temps obtenus avec un algorithme de ressorts-amortisseurs virtuels.

Cette these decrit l'etude de deux regions homologues du chromosome 21 humain normal. Elles ont ete detectees grace a un bacteriophage s'hybridant a trois regions du genome: deux distantes de 12 mb en 21q11. 1 et 21q22. 1 et une dans la region pericentrometrique du chromosome 13. Jusqu'a present, les regions homologues les mieux connues du genome normal correspondaient soit a des repetitions de quelques centaines de bases comme les sequences alu, soit a des genes et des pseudogenes apparus au cours de l'evolution. Des cas de duplications plus importantes ont aussi ete decrits mais, en general ils sont associes a des pathologies. Nous avons montre qu'il existe aussi des regions homologues de plusieurs centaines de kilobases dans le genome humain normal, en particulier sur le chromosome 21. Pour ce travail nous avons construit une banque specifique du chromosome 21 dans le chromosome artificiel de la levure (yac) a partir de lignees d'hybrides somatiques. Cette banque represente 1,5 equivalents du chromosome 21 et a ete reunie a la banque de l'icrf. Nous avons crible ces deux banques avec la sonde d21s190 polymorphe dupliquee, et avons obtenu 11 yacs. Les extremites de quelques yacs ont ete localisees par rapport a un assortiment de lignees d'hybrides somatiques contenant des portions differentes du chromosome 21. Certaines lignees contiennent uniquement le locus proximal, d'autres le locus distal et d'autres les deux loci. Cette approche et la recherche de sondes communes a plusieurs yac nous ont permis d'ordonner les clones les uns par rapport aux autres. Nous en avons aussi deduit que les deux regions homologues sont orientees dans le meme sens sur le chromosome. Au locus distal nous avons construit une carte de restriction avec des enzymes coupant dans les regions riches en cg et avons estime la taille de la region d'homologie entre 135 et 500 kb. Cette region ne contient pas de site noti mais deux ilots cg sont presents, indiquant l'existence possible de genes

Le principe de cartographie comparative a ete suivi pour etudier l'evolution de la region de classe i du complexe majeur d'histocompatibilite (cmh). L'auteur a identifie et localise de nouveaux marqueurs conserves entre l'homme et la souris, qui ont permis une comparaison de la moitie distale du cmh entre les deux especes. Cette carte comparative met en evidence une structure conservee de la region de classe i, malgre l'absence d'orthologie entre les genes de classe i. L'auteur postule que les sequences non apparentees aux sequences de classe i sont representatives d'une structure ancestrale, dans laquelle les sequences de classe i auraient evolue independamment. Parmi les sequences conservees, un regroupement de genes de recepteurs olfactifs a ete identifie. Plusieurs hypotheses sont proposees quant a la fonction et l'evolution de ces genes

Le chromosome 22 humain est un petit chromosome acrocentrique associes a diverses pathologies comprenant des anomalies du developpement embryonnaire (le syndrome de digeorge et le syndrome de l'il de chat) et des proliferations tumorales du systeme nerveux (les tumeurs neuroectodermiques peripheriques, la neurofibromatose de type 2, les meningiomes,. . . ) ou du systeme hematopoietique (la leucemie myeloide chronique). Il y a quatre ans les genes responsables de ces pathologies n'etaient pas connus, a l'exception du gene bcr, implique dans la leucemie myeloide chronique. Le travail presente dans cette these, visait a identifier de nouveaux genes dans les regions juxtacentromerique et centrale du bras long du chromosome 22 humain, associees a ces diverses pathologies. L'approche utilisee a repose sur l'isolement de cosmides a partir d'un hybride somatique d'irradiation selectionne pour son contenu en fragments d'adn humain. Dans chacuns des cosmides analyses, des sequences geniques potentielles ont ete recherchees et utilisees pour cribler des banques d'adn complementaire. Cette recherche a, entre autre, abouti a l'isolement de deux nouveaux adnc qui sont: 1/ un adnc chimere isole a partir d'un fragment conserve entre espece. Ce clone comprend d'une part, un adnc de fonction inconnue, code a partir de la region centrale du bras long du chromosome 22, et d'autre part, un adnc partiel localise sur le chromosome 3, correspondant au gene codant pour la glutaminyl-arnt synthetase. 2/ un adnc isole a partir d'un fragment riche en dinucleotide cpg, localise dans la region critique pour le syndrome de digeorge. Cet adnc code pour une proteine presentant des homologies avec deux inhibiteurs de la transcription des histones chez s. Cerevisiae: hir1 et hir2

Les robots sont de plus en plus amenés à interagir avec des humains ou des environnements anthropiques en vue de collaboration. La connaissance des propriétés visco-élastiques cartésiennes humaines durant des interactions physiques avec des environnements procure un éclairage au champ des sciences du mouvement humain, et aussi à la robotique collaborative pour la conception de commandes innovantes bio-inspirées. Dans cette thèse, la focalisation est placée sur une modélisation linéaire très simple en impédance mécanique du membre supérieur, qui fait entrer en jeu les paramètres cartésiens apparents en raideur, amortissement et masse. Cette modélisation permet d'approcher des comportements en rejet de perturbations qui interviennent notamment lors d'interactions physiques.Une expérience a été mise en œuvre avec un robot articulé piloté en admittance cartésienne, pour permettre des estimations d'impédance mécanique du bras de participants pendant une tâche de référence permettant de générer des mouvements rythmiques, avec des retours haptiques. Une méthode permettant l'estimation des paramètres du modèle en impédance, basée sur l'approximation des trajectoires virtuelles en position et force lors de faibles perturbations ne gênant pas la réalisation de la tâche, est proposée. Les trajectoires virtuelles sont approchées par des interpolations de splines ou des optimisations de sinusoïdes.Une trentaine de participants ont pris part aux expériences proposées pour permettre des estimations significatives de variations des paramètres visco-élastiques apparents et mieux comprendre leurs implications dans la réalisation d'une tâche en interaction avec un robot. Le compromis stabilité-transparence du couplage du robot avec un environnement en impédance a finalement été analysé pour proposer une amélioration des réglages du contrôle en admittance cartésienne
Robots are more inclined to interact with humans or their environment for collaborative purposes. Knowledge on the human endpoint vis-coelastic properties during physical interactions provides insights for the field of human movement science and also for the design of innovative bio-inspired collaborative robotic control strategies. In this work, the focus is placed on a simplistic linear mechanical model of the human arm, with endpoint apparent parameters like stiffness, damping and mass. Perturbation rejection behaviours occuring remarkably during physical interactions can be met using this modelling.In order to estimate those properties for the human arm, an experimental test-bed was designed using an endpoint admittance controled polyarticulated robot. A benchmark task was used so that rhythmic movements emerged, while haptic feedback were introduced by the robot. A methodology to identify the linear parameters of the chosen impedance model was designed, tackling the issue of the estimation of virtual trajectories of the arm during dynamic movements. The estimations of the arm's virtual trajectories both in position and force relied on spline interpolations and sine optimisations, for small deviations that did not alter the performances of the task.A cohort of participants took part in experiments proposed to observe significant variations of the viscoelastic apparent parameters, and improve the understanding of the implications of such variations during a physical interaction with a robot. The famous trade-off between stability and transparency while the robot is coupled with an environment was then study thanks to the obtained estimations, to enhance the tuning of the endpoint admittance control empirically designed

AbstractIn this chapter Taylor-Pirie illuminates how the microbiological imagination made its mark on anxious imperial fictions by close reading H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds (1898) and John Masefield’s Multitude and Solitude (1909) alongside parasitologists’ characterisations of parasite-vector-host relationships. The anthropocentric semantics of war, violence, and criminality characterised tropical illness as another form of colonial insurrection, bolstering the biopolitical power of medicine as an extension of the disciplinary law-and-order state. She interrogates the collision of the ‘medicine as war’ metaphor with a medicalised concept of ‘the Other’ to think through biomedical and national identity—as well as the discomforting agency of non-human vectors—in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), H. P. Lovecraft and Hazel Heald’s ‘Wingéd Death’ (1934), and the poetry and correspondence of parasitologists. Taylor-Pirie examines how vengeful insects, alien invasions, microbial villains, and the supernatural gave shape to the anxiety that Britain’s geopolitical relationships were immersing the imperial capital in a global marketplace of pathogens. By excavating the medical and political contexts of popular cultural forms like the vampire, she historicises lexes of contagion and parasitism that persist in contemporary political discourse surrounding immigration.

Sports bras are designed to reduce mammary glands or breast movement during exercises, but there is no standardized, valid and reliable method to evaluate relative three-dimensional (3D) breast movement; and there is no literature to predict the 3D force acting on the breasts during activities. A reliable method is essential to evaluate 3D breast movement and to determine the effective design features of supportive sports bras. This study derived and validated a new Breast Coordinate System (BCS) for investigating 3D breast movement, so as to identify the most effective bra features and to analyze the effects of breast volume and bra strap properties on breast movement, then to develop theoretical models of breast force generated during bare-breasted running. In the light of this, 3D mechanical models have been developed based on a system comprising a mass, springs and dampers. The orthogonal force exerted on the breasts during running was derived. The predicted results of maximum breast force were verified with previous literature. The new methods will contribute to future research on human locomotion and the design of close-fitting garments.

Background: Sports bras are engineer designed to enhance sports performance, which means that they need to provide an excellent fit, and offer adequate support and protection of the breasts to optimize their functionality. To effectively reduce breast motion during different intensity levels of exercise, the materials of sports bras are generally rigid which exert compressive forces onto the soft tissues of the breasts. However, these materials may still restrict air flow and inhibit body heat loss, while the pressure from the bra exerted onto the skin may also increases physiological strain and wear discomfort. This excessively high exerted pressure is known to produce an inhibitory effect on the sweating rate and associated with a significant rise in the axillary and core temperatures. This preliminary study therefore investigates the influence of bra pressure on the upper body temperature and thermal comfort following a short duration of treadmill running. Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of increased bra pressure on thermal response following exercise. The findings provide bra designers with insight into bra pressure and related bra design features necessary for optimal wear comfort during physical activities. Methods: A total of 12 young women have participated in this study to don a changeable sports bra that allows adjustment of tension or replacement of the bra components. The skin and body core temperatures as well as heart rate for four bra conditions during treadmill running for 15 minutes at 8 km/h are recorded by using temperature and heart rate sensors. The subjectively perceived thermal and pressure comfort are evaluated by using a visual analog scale with ratings of 1 to 10.Results: Following exercise, there is no change in core temperature for all of the bra conditions studied. Even though the body core temperature may increase due to the higher rate of heat production with muscular work done during treadmill running, the increase in heat dissipation tends to balance the increase in rate of metabolic heat production to maintain a stable core temperature. After a short duration of treadmill running, the change in skin temperature ranges from 0.22oC to 3.56oC amongst the 4 bra conditions. The shoulder strap area shows a slight change in skin temperature during exercise, and the participants are particularly sensitive to the increased pressure in this area, thus adversely affecting their ratings of the thermal and pressure comfort. Conclusion: In this study, the increased bra pressure does not show significant change in core temperature and heart rate during short duration exercise. Even though the results are not statistically significant, the shoulder strap pressure is found to be related to the changes in skin temperature and subjective ratings of thermal and pressure comfort.

Abstract Human echolocation is a method mainly used within the blind community to navigate using sound emission and analysing the returning echoes from the surrounding environment. Echolocation is predominantly trained by orientation and mobility instructors at visual rehabilitation centres. However, systematic guidelines or protocols focusing on the requirements of room acoustic simulations to accurately represent the auditory cues necessary in a virtual training environment for echolocation have not yet been developed. This paper sets out to investigate the use of geometrical acoustic (GA) calculations for a virtual echolocation training system comparing the measurements from the Benchmark for Room Acoustical Simulation (BRAS) dataset with other GA calculations outcomes. Three simple and one complex test scenes are chosen from the dataset. The calculation settings are optimised for each test scene considering the complexity of the scene, room volume and acoustic phenomena. The monaural room impulse responses from the simulations are analysed with respect to the timing of the reflections and the level relations between the reflections and the resulting frequency response for each scene. These are subsequently compared with each measured counterpart. The paper discusses the results, their limitations, and provides recommendations on the use of GA calculation tools for echolocation training scopes.

The research designs and developed a biofertilizer from Mycorrhiza and Rhizobium evaluating its antagonistic capacity and biotization in the cultivation of vegeta-bles with a DCA, the sample considers potatoes, peas and barley in the District of Huasahuasi, with 9 treatments in three formulas, considering a control group without inoculation and two repetitions. As a result, the optimal formula is ob-tained with 300g of mycorrhiza and Rhizobium strains + 500g of black soil + 200g of potato peel bran, which has an effective antagonistic capacity of 100% in pea crops, 90% in the barley and 85% in the potato, besides that it achieves a bio-tization in the pea crop of 95%, in the barley 100% and in the potato 90%.

Environmental justice (EJ) activists have long worked with abolitionists in their communities, critiquing the ways policing, prisons, and pollution are entangled and racially constituted (Braz and Gilmore 2006). Yet, much EJ scholarship reflects a liberal Western focus on a more equal distribution of harms, rather than challenging the underlying systems of exploitation these harms rest upon (Álvarez and Coolsaet 2020). This article argues that policing facilitates environmentally unjust developments that are inherently harmful to nature and society. Policing helps enforce a social order rooted in the ‘securing’ of property, hierarchy, and human-nature exploitation. Examining the colonial continuities of policing, we argue that EJ must challenge the assumed necessity of policing, overcome the mythology of the state as ‘arbiter of justice’, and work to create social conditions in which policing is unnecessary. This will help open space to question other related harmful hegemonic principles. Policing drives environmental injustice, so EJ must embrace abolition.

The Changes in Nature Visitation and the Potential of Mobile Big Data for Visitor Monitoring workshop was held in Helsinki on 28.9.2023. We organized the workshop as part of the five-year MOBICON research project (Mobile Big Data for Understanding People in Nature - Detecting short- and long-term changes and their implications for biodiversity conservation) funded by Kone Foundation. The aim of the workshop was to collect expert opinions related to the changes in the recreational use of nature, the monitoring needs related to the changing visitations, and to discuss the possibilities of various new data sources to meet managerial information needs. Eight experts from different organisations (Metsähallitus, City of Helsinki, Uusimaa Recreation Area Association Uuvi and Suomen Latu r.y.) participated in the event. Prior to the workshop, the participants had answered a survey about their experiences and information needs related to the changing visitations. The discussion progressed from the results of the survey to more in-depth discussions. Below we summarize the key results from the discussions. The recreational use of nature was seen to be changing. Recreational use is increasing and its temporal rhythms are changing. At the same time, the visitor base becomes more diverse because of the general diversification of society and the fact that new user-groups have started to explore nature. Activities and ways of being in nature are also diversifying. Approaching the changes through four megatrends (social, environmental, political and technological changes). The social and environmental drivers of change were seen as the most important. social changes were identified to be related to the ageing of the population and the diversification of nature visitors. Climate change, as an environmental factor, was identified as the most important driver of change, impacting both nature but also human behaviour. Among the political drivers of change, particularly the increasing polarisation of society emerged in the discussion. In addition, political decisions relating to everyone's rights, biodiversity protection and resources directed for the management of recreational areas were seen as important. Technological changes were identified as important and this change taking place as part of the broader technologization of society. On the one hand, this general technologization increases the opportunities for access to and sharing of information. On the other hand, the increased ‘measurement culture’ also affects the amounts of recreational use, as people are aiming to reach their kilometer or step targets. The information needs of organisations were recognized to include 1) planning of management actions, 2) justifying one's own activities for securing funding and 3) informing visitors. Information is needed on visitor flows and their spatial and temporal distribution. In addition, information about the visitors themselves was considered necessary, especially as the visitor base is becoming more diverse. The workshop participants also expressed concern about those who do not visit recreational areas: how get more information about them and the factors that limit nature visits. Collecting visitor data was seen as expensive and time-consuming, which is why finding new kinds of data sources has potential. Mobile data was evaluated as an interesting source of information and its various aspects were discussed through a SWOT analysis. However, it was clear that in operational use, information must be reliable and easily accessible and some doubts were raised on the potential of mobile big data from this aspect.
