These institutions are analyzed by the theoretical approach of modernist linguists constructivists. Abstract This article analyzes the painterly formation of pictorial subjects of embodiment and disembodiment since the early modern period. Starting with Gerhard Richter, Quattrocento painters, and Titian, it focuses on Rembrandt and his late group portrait The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Deijman (1656). The subject of this picture is a dissection of a man’s brain – and hence the surgeons’ search for the seat of the human soul and the motion of life. In the motif of the corpse, Rembrandt performs a radical operation with paint layers that historical sources described with the terms “doodverwe” and “lyffverwe” (“dead color” and “body color”). Rembrandt’s pictorial formation is a distinctly complex answer to the soulless, lifeless corpse’s state of being, which has been reduced to no more than an image. At the same time, the dead body is the place in which Rembrandt reflects the act of painting as a way of working with the tension of embodiment and disembodiment, of giving and taking life, with color.

The Born–Oppenheimer approximation (BOA) provides the foundation for virtually all computational studies of chemical binding and reactivity, and it is the justification for the widely used “balls and springs” picture of molecules. The BOA assumes that nuclei effectively stand still on the timescale of electronic motion, due to their large masses relative to electrons. This implies electrons never change their energy quantum state. When molecules react, atoms must move, meaning that electrons may become excited in violation of the BOA. Such electronic excitation is clearly seen for: (i) Schottky diodes where H adsorption at Ag surfaces produces electrical “chemicurrent;” (ii) Au-based metal–insulator–metal (MIM) devices, where chemicurrents arise from H–H surface recombination; and (iii) Inelastic energy transfer, where H collisions with Au surfaces show H-atom translation excites the metal’s electrons. As part of this work, we report isotopically selective hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) translational inelasticity measurements in collisions with Ag and Au. Together, these experiments provide an opportunity to test new theories that simultaneously describe both nuclear and electronic motion, a standing challenge to the field. Here, we show results of a recently developed first-principles theory that quantitatively explains both inelastic scattering experiments that probe nuclear motion and chemicurrent experiments that probe electronic excitation. The theory explains the magnitude of chemicurrents on Ag Schottky diodes and resolves an apparent paradox––chemicurrents exhibit a much larger isotope effect than does H/D inelastic scattering. It also explains why, unlike Ag-based Schottky diodes, Au-based MIM devices are insensitive to H adsorption.

Category: Ankle, Ankle Arthritis Introduction/Purpose: Reports of ankle range of motion and how it affects patient outcomes following total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) have been mixed. Furthermore, recent studies have relied on clinical exam to obtain postoperative range of motion and have lacked preoperative functional scores. The purpose of our study was to analyze how preoperative range of motion and functional scores change with time following TAA using postoperative functional scores and radiographs for range of motion calculations. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on 107 patients (109 ankles) that had undergone fixed-bearing implant TAA by a single surgeon between 2010 and 2015. Preoperative range of motion was gathered clinically in office by the senior author. Postoperative range of motion through the ankle joint was evaluated with dedicated weight-bearing maximum dorsiflexion and plantarflexion lateral radiographs at 3 and 6 months, 1 and 2 years. The range of motion was measured using the angle measurement tool on the picture archiving and communication system. Patients completed visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain and the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) questionnaire subcategorized into activities of daily (ADL) and sports subscale preoperatively and at postoperative intervals of 3 and 6 months, 1 and 2 years. The mean age was 65 years (range, 31-83 years). Mean BMI was 28.1 (range, 14.9-44.9). There were 53 males (50%). Results: The mean total arc of ankle motion preoperatively was 20.7 degrees and improved significantly to 28.3, 34.3, 33.3, and 33.3 degrees at 3 and 6 months, 1 and 2 years, respectively (P<0.001) (Figure 1). Mean VAS pain and mean FAAM ADL preoperative scores improved significantly at each postoperative time point as seen in Figure 1 (P<0.001). Increased ankle range of motion was correlated with lower VAS preoperatively (r=-0.38, P=0.007), and at 1 year (r=-0.36, P<0.001), and 2 years (r=-0.2, P=0.033) postoperatively. Increased ankle range of motion was significantly correlated with higher FAAM-ADL at 3 months (r=0.48, P=0.012), 1 year (r=0.24, P<0.034), and 2 years (r=0.37, P<0.001) postoperatively. Conclusion: Patients undergoing fixed-bearing TAA had continued and sustained improvement from preoperative total arc of motion, pain, and function at each postoperative visit, up to 2 years. Ankle range of motion was noted to peak at 6 months, while pain and FAAM-ADL continued to improve up to 2 years postoperatively. Patients with greater ankle range of motion correlated with less pain and improved function at 1 and 2 years postoperatively. Though pain and function may continue to improve even as far out as 2 years postoperatively, it is not likely that range of motion will continue to increase.

Abstract Soccer kicking kinematics has received wide interest in literature. However, while the instep-kick has been broadly studied, only few researchers investigated the inside-of-the-foot kick, which is one of the most frequently performed techniques during games. In particular, little knowledge is available about differences in kinematics when kicking with the preferred and non-preferred leg. A motion analysis system recorded the three-dimensional coordinates of reflective markers placed upon the body of nine amateur soccer players (23.0 ± 2.1 years, BMI 22.2 ± 2.6 kg/m2), who performed 30 pass-kicks each, 15 with the preferred and 15 with the non-preferred leg. We investigated skill kinematics while maintaining a perspective on the complete picture of movement, looking for laterality related differences. The main focus was laid on: anatomical angles, contribution of upper limbs in kick biomechanics, kinematics of the body Center of Mass (CoM), which describes the whole body movement and is related to balance and stability. When kicking with the preferred leg, CoM displacement during the ground-support phase was 13% higher (p<0.001), normalized CoM height was 1.3% lower (p<0.001) and CoM velocity 10% higher (p<0.01); foot and shank velocities were about 5% higher (p<0.01); arms were more abducted (p<0.01); shoulders were rotated more towards the target (p<0.01, 6° mean orientation difference). We concluded that differences in motor control between preferred and non-preferred leg kicks exist, particularly in the movement velocity and upper body kinematics. Coaches can use these results to provide effective instructions to players in the learning process, moving their focus on kicking speed and upper body behavior

Die Diskussion erstreckt sich auf die weltweite Geschichte des Kinos seit dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert einschließlich der Faktoren, die zum Aufstieg Hollywoods zur international dominierenden Macht beigetragen haben, auch in Deutschland. Hieran anschließend richtet sie sich auf den Sprachgebrauch, wo bei Einführung des Tonfilms die US-Studios bei aller Dominanz Hollywoods rasch auf den Bedarf reagierten, die Filme sprachlich an örtliche Gegebenheiten anzupassen. Diese langjährige Politik der Synchronisierung und Untertitelung von Filmen setzt sich bis heute fort. Dennoch findet bei all dem, wie die Praxis der Filmbetitelung in Deutschland erkennen lässt, auch die englische Sprache Anwendung. Die detaillierte Analyse der Betitelung der in Deutschland beliebtesten Filme über einen Zeitraum von 20 Jahren zeigt ein Kontinuum des Sprachgebrauchs zwischen den beiden Polen Deutsch und Englisch, indem die beiden Sprachen entweder alternativ verwendet werden, oder in kreativen und innovativen Kombinationen, bei denen der sonstige Gegensatz zwischen ihnen verschwimmt.

This chapter sets up this relationship and creates a road map for the seven-chapter exploration of the small screen’s romance with a foundational American art form. It further contextualizes the work within a broader view of popular music, early forms of musical platform convergence (e.g. Broadway with sheet music sales, radio, and motion pictures), existing scholarship, and the challenges of conducting such a historical study when copies of the primary focus of the research—the programming itself—no longer exist or never existed in re-viewable form.

The bodily fear evoked by classic horror films of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, including those discussed in the previous chapters, is partly triggered by the spectator’s active imagination, put to service in the name of a narrational system that, for reasons of censorship, ethics, and industrial regulations concerning screen content, simply could not show everything. Instead, motion pictures from that period told rather than showed the details of a person’s bad death. This chapter charts the move toward a more direct sort of bodily horror beginning in the 1960s and 1970s; part of what Beth A. Kattelman calls the first wave of “carnographic culture,” which continued into the prosthetics-heavy 1980s and intensified throughout the post-9/11 second wave of gore-filled horror films noted for their thematic emphasis on literal and figurative torture as well as their privileging of “surface” over “depth.” The “carnographic” aspects of the genre are humorously commented on in The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs (Shudder, 2018–present), a streaming American TV series that serves as a centering case study of this chapter.

Liver was always considered to be ‘highly sensitive’ to radiation therapy (RT) and was not considered ‘safe’ for radiation therapy treatment. The most significant radiation induced liver toxicity was described by Ingold et al. as “Radiation hepatitis.” Historically, radiation to liver lesions with curative intent or incidental exposure during adjacent organ treatment or total body irradiation implied whole organ irradiation due to lack of high precision technology. Whole organ irradiation led to classic clinical picture termed as “Radiation Induced Liver Disease (RILD).” In conventional fractionation, the whole liver could be treated only to the doses of 30–35Gy safely, which mostly serves as palliation rather than cure. With the advent of technological advancements like IMRT, especially stereotactic radiation therapy (SBRT), the notion of highly precise and accurate treatment has been made practically possible. The toxicity profile for this kind of focused radiation was certainly different from that of whole organ irradiation. There have been attempts made to characterize the effects caused by the high precision radiation. Thus, the QUANTEC liver paper distinguished RILD to ‘classic’ and ‘non-classic’ types. Classic RILD is defined as ‘anicteric hepatomegaly and ascites’, and also can also have elevated alkaline phosphatase (more than twice the upper limit of normal or baseline value). This is the type of clinical picture encountered following irradiation of whole or greater part of the organ. Non-classic RILD is defined by elevated liver transaminases more than five times the upper limit of normal or a decline in liver function (measured by a worsening of Child-Pugh score by 2 or more), in the absence of classic RILD. In patients with baseline values more than five times the upper limit of normal, CTCAE Grade 4 levels are within 3 months after completion of RT. This is the type of RILD that is encountered typically after high-dose radiation to a smaller part of liver. It is commonly associated with infective etiology. Emami et al. reported the liver tolerance doses or TD 5/5 (5% complication rate in 5 years) as 50 Gy for one-third (33%) of the liver, 35 Gy for two-thirds (67%) of the liver, and 30 Gy for the whole liver (100%). Liver function (Child Pugh Score), infective etiology, performance status and co-morbidities influence the radiation induced toxicity. Lyman–Kutcher–Burman (LKB)-NTCP model was used to assess dose-volume risk of RILD. Lausch et al. at London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP), developed a logistic TCP model. Quantitative Analysis of Normal Tissue Effects in the Clinic (QUANTEC) reported recommendations that mean normal liver dose should be <18 Gy for baseline CP-A patients and < 6 Gy for those with CP-B, for a 6-fraction SBRT regimen. The University of Colorado phase 1 clinical trial of SBRT for liver metastases described the importance of the liver volume spared, that is, ‘critical volume model.’ It is estimated that a typical normal liver volume is approximately 2000 mL and specified that a minimum volume of 700 mL or 35% of normal liver should remain uninjured by SBRT i.e. at least 700 mL of normal liver (entire liver minus cumulative GTV) had to receive at total dose less than 15 Gy. In treatment regimen of 48 Gy in 3 fractions, CP-A patients were required to either limit the dose to 33% of the uninvolved liver (D33%) < 10 Gy and maintain the liver volume receiving <7 Gy to <500 cc. In more conservative treatment regimen, such as in 40 Gy in 5 fractions schedule, CP-B7 patients had to meet constraints of D33% < 18 Gy and/or > 500 cc receiving <12 Gy. The concept of body surface area (BSA) and Basal Metabolic Index (BMI) guided estimation of optimal liver volume is required to estimate the liver volume need to be spared during SBRT treatment. Radiation induced liver injury is potentially hazardous complication. There is no definitive treatment and a proportion of patient may land up in gross decompensation. Usually supportive care, diuretics, albumin supplement, and vitamin K replacement may be useful. Better case selection will avert incidence of RILD. Precise imaging, contouring, planning and respecting normal tissue constraints are critical. Radiation delivery with motion management and image guidance will allow delivery of higher dose and spare normal liver and hence will improve response to treatment and reduce RILD.

Abstract To deal with the decarbonization challenge in an efficient way in terms of cost-effectiveness, reliability and feasibility for newbuilding and retrofit solutions in maritime industry, Seatech H2020 project develops a flapping-foil thruster propulsion innovation, together with a dual-fuel engine innovation to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The focus of this study is on the foil thruster, which is arranged at the bow and slightly in front of the ship, and it utilises the energy from wave-induced motions by converting it into thrust. For such innovations, a clear picture of its economic impacts facilitates their adoption. Thus, to deal with the economic aspects, from a life cycle perspective, the paper introduces a life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) framework, which includes all four phases of the system’s life cycle; construction, operation, maintenance and end-of-life. In the context of the developed framework, the initial challenge for the LCCA exercise is to fully define the design details of the system, which will facilitate the cost approximation, mainly for construction, maintenance and end-of-life phases. The results from the materialisation of the LCCA provide significant insight with respect to the lifecycle costs and may support the decision-making process for newbuilding and retrofitting investments.

Abstract Managing the risk of subsea wellhead fatigue failure has been a concern in the offshore Oil & Gas industry in the last decade. Considerable efforts have been spent towards understanding the risk picture through improving underlying analysis methodology described in recommended practices such as DNV-RP-E104. For wells where the likelihood and consequence of a fatigue failure is viewed as unacceptably high, it may be desirable to reduce the fatigue damage for upcoming operations. This may be achieved by reducing the loads from the MODU and drilling riser to the wellhead, by using a wellhead load relief (WLR) system to reduce BOP motions. In addition to reducing fatigue damage, WLR systems can also be designed to reduce possible accidental loading on the subsea wellhead. The design concept of a WLR system is to transfer a major part of the riser loads into subsea facility structures and seabed, thereby reducing the residual loads into the wellhead system. Understanding which parameters that are of importance to the efficiency of the WLR system is of essence when designing and choosing compensating measures for reducing fatigue damage. This paper presents how to calculate the wellhead load reduction efficiency and provide guidance on properties that are of importance for the efficiency for different wellhead load relief concepts. Further, the paper will illustrate that a WLR system of high stiffness (relative to the well/BOP stiffness) will achieve a high wellhead load reduction, while a softer system results in a lower load reduction. Conversely, the load reduction for a given WLR system is less for a stiff well than for a soft well. Thus, the performance of a WLR system is impacted by relative stiffness problem and not one of stress or forces.

The purpose of this paper is to present accurate, objective information about the kinematic characteristics of three of the punches used in striking combat sports: cross, swing and uppercut. The use of MOVEN equipment and a computational methodology that have been presented in other studies have made it possible to present a highly accurate analysis. The kinematic parameters chosen for the comparative analysis of these striking techniques are the fist's speed, the minimum fist's acceleration value (recorded after impact as a measure of the impact force), the length of the fist's trajectory and the distance measured from the point where the arm movement begins to the point where the target impact occurs. The subject of the study is a multi-national champion in the 81 kg weight category in full-contact, low-kick and light-kick styles and the data acquisitions were made within the Ciprian Sora Sports Club in Bucharest. The subject executed 10 cross punches, 10 swings and 10 uppercuts in a 40- kg box bag, having MOVEN equipment mounted on it. After calculating the parameters of each stroke we calculated the average values for each type of stroke and compared the variance of these averages over time, referring to the maximum and minimum values for each parameter taken into account. We also have a series of graphical representations to create a clearer picture of the differences we want to highlight. The usefulness of this approach is more than simply informative, such a method of analysis can be useful in drawing up the tactical plans of the fighters and especially in the formation and optimization of the patterns of motion used for each technique and much more, for as many combinations as possible.

Internal waves near the ocean surface have been observed in many parts of the world including the Andaman Sea, Sulu Sea and South China Sea among others. The factors that cause and propagate these large amplitude waves include bathymetry, density stratification and ocean currents. Although their effects on floating drilling platforms and its riser systems have not been extensively studied, these waves have in the past seriously disrupted offshore exploration and drilling operations. In particular a drill pipe was ripped from the BOP and lost during drilling operations in the Andaman sea. Drilling riser damages were also reported from the south China Sea among other places. The purpose of this paper is to present a valid numerical model conforming to the physics of weakly nonlinear internal waves and to study the effects on offshore drilling semisubmersibles and riser systems. The pertinent differential equation that captures the physics is the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation which has a general solution involving Jacobian elliptical functions. The solution of the Taylor Goldstein equation captures the effects of the pycnocline. Internal wave packets with decayed oscillations as observed from satellite pictures are specifically modeled. The nonlinear internal waves are characterized by wave amplitudes that can exceed 50 ms and the present of shearing currents near the layer of pycnocline. The offshore drilling system is exposed to these current shears and the associated movements of large volumes of water. The effect of internal waves on drilling systems is studied through nonlinear fully coupled time domain analysis. The numerical model is implemented in a coupled analysis program where the hull, moorings and riser are considered as an integrated system. The program is then utilized to study the effects of the internal wave on the platform global motions and drilling system integrity. The study could be useful for future guidance on offshore exploration and drilling operations in areas where the internal wave phenomenon is prominent.
