The incidental mortality of seabirds in longline fisheries is a global issue. For reducing seabirds incidental capture, the implementation of deploying bird-scaring lines during the fishing operations is important. A set of bird scaring line was designed to provide the guideline of performance. Most of the components of the bird scaring line got from longline spare gears and the boat hardwares conveniently. The trials were conducted 33 trips in No.2 Yu-Shiun, off the coastal of southwest and east of Taiwan from 22 March to 3 November in 2005. A pair of birds scaring lines were towed in 3 different weights float respectively and the streamers suspend range has been measured from the stern of vessel at line setting. The average aerial coverage could reached 77.5~97.5 m over constantly under 7~10 kt vessel speed and 1.5~3.5 kg float was been towed. BTR were attached to the branchlines upper 2.2 m of hook. These data showed the depth of hooks may sink to 6.5 m by 7 kt setting . The results suggested that the streamers of recommend bird scaring line can suspend to 87.8 m astern of vessel provided a 3.5 kg float attached end of seaward under a variety of weather conditions and was fit in the minimum requirement standard. In the future, a fisherman-targeted education program might be developed and demonstrated how to make the bird scaring line and deploy. It is necessary to encourage the fishermen to deploy bird-scaring line and to promote the work of seabirds conservation.
