This study presents 13 new organic compounds with self-assembling behavior, which can be divided into two groups. The first synthesized group includes compounds based on 4′-(trifluoromethoxy)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl-4-(trifluoromethoxy) benzoate core, and the second includes compounds based on 4-((4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl)ethynyl)phenyl-4-(trifluoromethoxy) benzoate core. They differ in the number and location of the fluorine atom in the lateral position. Mesomorphic properties, phase transition enthalpies, refractive indices, birefringence, and MWIR (mid-wavelength infrared) spectral properties of the compounds were investigated, and the results were compared with currently used materials. The influence of the length of the core as well as type and position of substituents in the molecular core was analyzed. The lack of aliphatic protons in the molecular structure generated unique infrared properties.

The synthesis of new chiral monomer 4-(menthyloxyacetoxy- benzoyloxy)biphenyl-4′-(2-(undec-10-e noyloxy)ethoxy)benzoate (ML), crosslinking agent 4-(undec-10-enoyloxy)biphenyl-4′-(2-(undec-10-enoyloxy)ethoxy)benzoate (CA), and liquid crystal polymer networks (E1−E5) containing menthyl group is presented. Their chemical structures and phase behavior were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), elemental analyses, polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction. The selective reflection of light for ML was investigated with ultraviolet/visible/near infrared (UV/Visible/NIR). By inserting a flexible spacer between the mesogenic core and the terminal menthyl groups, MLcould form mesophase and show a chiral smectic C phase, cholesteric phase and cubic blue phase. CA displayed a smectic A phase and nematic phase. The polymer networks containing less than 12 mol% of the crosslinking units showed reversible cholesteric phase transition, wide mesophase temperature range, and excellent thermal stability. With increasing the content of crosslinking unit, the corresponding Tg increased, the Ti decreased, and the mesophase temperature range narrowed for E1−E5. TGA showed that the Td(5%) was greater than 330°C for E1−E5.

Comparative study of chiral liquid crystalline (S)-(1)-4’-(1-methylheptylcarbonyl) biphenyl-4-yl 4-[4-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxy)butyl-1-oxy] benzoate (4HH) and (S)-4’-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)biphenyl-4-yl 4-[4-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxy) butyl-1-oxy]-2,3-difluorobenzoate (4FF) is performed by complementary methods. For 4HH melting of the low-temperature crystal phase and subsequent cold crystallization (from antiferroelectric smectic CA* phase to the high-temperature crystal phase) are reported, crystallization kinetics is examined and a monotropic hexatic SmXA* phase is observed on cooling. For 4FF rich polymorphism in the solid state is investigated mainly by simultaneous X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. Influence of fluorosubstitution on structural, electro-optic and dielectric properties of the smectic phases is reported. Unit cell parameters of crystal phases of 4HH and 4FF are determined. The reported results show that the double fluorosubstitution slows down the Goldstone mode and PH phason in the smectic phases and facilitates crystallization.

Vibrational dynamics in the glass transition and the cold crystallization process of (S)-4′-(1-methyloctyloxycarbonyl) biphenyl-4-yl 4-[7-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxy) heptyl-1-oxy]-benzoate (3F7HPhH7) was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) during cooling/heating experimental runs. The measured spectra processing was supported by quantum chemical density functional theory (DFT) calculations (frequency assignments). The perturbation-correlation moving window two-dimensional analysis (PCMW2D) was performed to examine how the height of individual absorption bands change under with temperature. Two-dimensional correlation analysis (2D-COS) was used to detect freezing-in or activation of the stochastic movements during the vitrification and the cold crystallization processes. Upon cooling, the vitrification process involves freezing-in of the stochastic movements of ester groups. Upon heating, as the cold crystallization process begins, the first to respond are the vibrations of the C–O–C and C=O groups in the rigid core.

ABSTRACT A gram-positive polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) degrader, Rhodococcus sp. strain RHA1, metabolizes biphenyl through the 2-hydroxypenta-2,4-dienoate (HPD) and benzoate metabolic pathways. The HPD metabolic pathway genes, the HPD hydratase (bphE1), 4-hydroxy-2-oxovalerate aldolase (bphF1), and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (acylating) (bphG) genes, were cloned from RHA1. The deduced amino acid sequences of bphGF1E1 have 30 to 58% identity with those of the HPD metabolic pathway genes of gram-negative bacteria. The order of these genes, bphG-bphF1-bphE1, differs from that of the HPD metabolic pathway genes, bphE-bphG-bphF, in gram-negative degraders of PCB, phenol, and toluene. Reverse transcription-PCR experiments indicated that the bphGF1E1 genes are inducibly cotranscribed in cells grown on biphenyl and ethylbenzene. Primer extension analysis revealed that the transcriptional initiation site exists within the bphR gene located adjacent to and upstream of bphG, which is deduced to code a transcriptional regulator. The respective enzyme activities of bphGF1E1 gene products were detected in Rhodococcus erythropolis IAM1399 carrying a bphGF1E1 plasmid. The insertional inactivation of the bphE1, bphF1, and bphG genes resulted in the loss of the corresponding enzyme activities and diminished growth on both biphenyl and ethylbenzene. Severe growth interference was observed during growth on biphenyl. The growth defects were partially restored by the introduction of plasmids containing the respective intact genes. These results indicated that the cloned bphGF1E1 genes are not only responsible for the primary metabolism of HPD during growth on both biphenyl and ethylbenzene but are also involved in preventing the accumulation of unexpected toxic metabolites, which interfere with the growth of RHA1.

AbstractLiquid crystalline perfluorinated biphenyl benzoates were synthesized and investigated. A highly tilted, neat orthoconic smectic antiferroelectric phase was observed. A homologous series of compounds without and with a single fluorine atom substituted at different positions of a molecular rigid core was investigated by standard methods. Influence of fluorine substitution on physical properties of antiferroelectric smectic phase was discussed as well as influence of fluorination on molecular dipole moment orientation and its value were presented. Decrease in rotational viscosity as a result of fluorine substitution within a molecular rigid core was ascribed to changes of molecular packing.

ABSTRACT The genus Rhodococcus is recognized for its potential to degrade a large range of aromatic substances, including plant-derived phenolic compounds. We used comparative genomics in the context of the broader Rhodococcus pan-genome to study genomic traits of two newly described Rhodococcus strains (type-strain Rhodococcus pseudokoreensis R79 T and Rhodococcus koreensis R85) isolated from apple rhizosphere. Of particular interest was their ability to degrade phenolic compounds as part of an integrated approach to treat apple replant disease (ARD) syndrome. The pan-genome of the genus Rhodococcus based on 109 high-quality genomes was open with a small core (1.3%) consisting of genes assigned to basic cell functioning. The range of genome sizes in Rhodococcus was high, from 3.7 to 10.9 Mbp. Genomes from host-associated strains were generally smaller compared to environmental isolates which were characterized by exceptionally large genome sizes. Due to large genomic differences, we propose the reclassification of distinct groups of rhodococci like the Rhodococcus equi cluster to new genera. Taxonomic species affiliation was the most important factor in predicting genetic content and clustering of the genomes. Additionally, we found genes that discriminated between the strains based on habitat. All members of the genus Rhodococcus had at least one gene involved in the pathway for the degradation of benzoate, while biphenyl degradation was mainly restricted to strains in close phylogenetic relationships with our isolates. The ~40% of genes still unclassified in larger Rhodococcus genomes, particularly those of environmental isolates, need more research to explore the metabolic potential of this genus. IMPORTANCE Rhodococcus is a diverse, metabolically powerful genus, with high potential to adapt to different habitats due to the linear plasmids and large genome sizes. The analysis of its pan-genome allowed us to separate host-associated from environmental strains, supporting taxonomic reclassification. It was shown which genes contribute to the differentiation of the genomes based on habitat, which can possibly be used for targeted isolation and screening for desired traits. With respect to apple replant disease (ARD), our isolates showed genome traits that suggest potential for application in reducing plant-derived phenolic substances in soil, which makes them good candidates for further testing against ARD.
