Abstract Within Hymenoptera, the superfamily Chalcidoidea (chalcidoid wasps) is the second largest superfamily after Ichneumonoidea. Because of the preponderance of parasitoid species, Chalcidoidea is one of the most important groups in applied biological control. This book provides a comprehensive, accurate checklists for the chalcidoid fauna of Iran. The species listed in each family chapter include all the species recorded in the literature from Iran through 2019, with one exception as noted in Chapter 10 (Eurytomidae). Each family chapter includes differential characters to distinguish the family, hypothesized phylogenetic relationships with other families, and general biological attributes of the family. Previous cataloguing efforts of the Iranian fauna for the family are summarized, as well as the information included in the checklist of species for the family. This summary information includes the number of species recorded from Iran, any newly recorded species, a comparison of the Iranian fauna with those of adjacent countries, and major host attributes of the family in Iran. Also included for each species record are host records and plant associates in Iran, when known, and additional comments as necessary. The final chapter tabulates the species diversity of Iranian Chalcidoidea by family, the species newly exclude from Iran, the species presently considered as endemic to Iran and the number of species of each family that are known from each of the 31 provinces that comprise Iran. Because of the importance of chalcidoids for biological control of pests in Iran, host information for parasitoid species that is provided throughout the chapters is synthesized in an Appendix at the end of the book.

Annotation:
In The Movement for Global Mental Health: Critical Views from South and Southeast Asia, prominent anthropologists, public health physicians, and psychiatrists respond sympathetically but critically to the Movement for Global Mental Health (MGMH). They question some of its fundamental assumptions: the idea that "mental disorders" can clearly be identified; that they are primarily of biological origin; that the world is currently facing an "epidemic" of them; that the most appropriate treatments for them normally involve psycho-pharmaceutical drugs; and that local or indigenous therapies are of little interest or importance for treating them. The contributors argue that, on the contrary, defining "mental disorders" is difficult and culturally variable; that social and biographical factors are often important causes of them; that the "epidemic" of mental disorders may be an effect of new ways of measuring them; and that the countries of South and Southeast Asia have abundant, though non-psychiatric, resources for dealing with them. In short, they advocate a thoroughgoing mental health pluralism.

An introduction to biological and molecular psychiatry is offered, intended for oncology and palliative medicine clinicians. A recent historical perspective is used, beginning with a summary of monoaminergic and cholinergic neurotransmission as understood in the 1980s. One endocrine theory of depression, based on HPA axis dysfunction, is described. Recognition of the limits of these models has led to a deeper molecular psychiatry ‘beyond the synapse’ and to an appreciation of the importance of amino acid neurotransmission. Selective expression of proteins, and their covalent and allosteric modification, is now seen as central to neuroplasticity. The NMDA receptor and excitotoxicity are introduced. The chapter closes with an overview of the amygdala and of hippocampal neurogenesis.

The emphasis on the collaborative dimension of life overlooks the importance of biological individuals (conceived of as integrated, self-maintaining organizations) in the build-up of more complex collaborative networks in the course of evolution. This chapter proposes a process-based organizational ontology for biology, according to which the essential features of unicellular organismicality are captured by a self-maintaining organization of processes integrated by means of a special type of collaboration (realized through regulatory processes entailing an indispensable interdependence) between its constitutive and its interactive aspects. This ontology is then used to describe different types of collaborations among cells and to suggest the type that yields a multicellular organism. The proposed organizational framework enables us to critically assess hypercollaborative views of life, especially issues related to the distinction between biological individuals and organisms and between life and non-life, without however underestimating the central biological role of collaboration.

Chapter 3 considers how the conservation of marine biological diversity has emerged as a major concept that has influenced the development of the international legal framework for the protection of the marine environment. Whilst the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) only obliquely refers to the importance of protecting marine ecosystems, biodiversity has come to play a much greater role in the modern law of the sea, particularly since the conclusion of the Convention Biological Diversity (CBD). The chapter analyses the structure and content of this Convention and related global biodiversity treaties and how they apply to marine areas. It also considers how the conservation of marine biodiversity has emerged as a central objective of many regional seas treaties and the roles that these instruments have played in offering protection to endangered or threatened marine species and promoting the global objective of increasing the number and scope of marine protected areas.

Advancements in OMICs are now enabling investigators to explore comprehensively the biological consequences of exogenous and endogenous exposures by detecting molecular signatures of exposure, early signs of adverse biological effects, preclinical disease, and molecularly defined cancer subtypes. These new technologies have proven invaluable for assembling a comprehensive portrait of human exposure, health, and disease. This includes hypothesis-driven biomarkers, as well as platforms that can agnostically analyze entire biologic processes and “compartments,” including the measurement of small molecules (metabolomics), DNA polymorphisms and rarer inherited variants (genomics), methylation and microRNA (epigenomics), chromosome-wide alterations, mRNA (transcriptomics), proteins (proteomics), and the microbiome (microbiomics). Although the implementation of these technologies in epidemiologic studies has already shown great promise, some challenges of particular importance must be addressed. Non-genetic OMIC markers vary over time due to both random variation and physiologic changes. Therefore, there is an urgent need for cohorts to collect repeat biological samples over time.

ADHD is a worldwide phenomenon of considerable importance, having generated major controversy throughout its history. In this chapter we emphasize the confluence of biological vulnerabilities and contextual influences essential for its manifestations. We also provide information on the sharp rises in both diagnosed prevalence and rates of medication treatment in recent years, providing a case example from the US pertaining to the influences of educational policies as one trigger of such increases. We conclude with commentary on the need for integrative and integrated perspectives on both the origins of ADHD and evidence-based treatments. Even though ADHD has important heritable and biological roots, its symptoms and impairments are amplified or diminished in homes and schools, and multimodal treatments are optimal for enhancing competence. Moreover, societal context and policy clearly shape diagnostic trends. We emphasize the need for integrative perspectives on ADHD, as reductionistic viewpoints polarize essential dialogue.

Biological Control: Global Impacts, Challenges and Future Directions of Pest Management provides a historical summary of organisms and main strategies used in biological control, as well as the key challenges confronting biological control in the 21st century. Biological control has been implemented for millennia, initially practised by growers moving beneficial species from one local area to another. Today, biological control has evolved into a formal science that provides ecosystem services to protect the environment and the resources used by humanity. With contributions from dedicated scientists and practitioners from around the world, this comprehensive book highlights important successes, failures and challenges in biological control efforts. It advocates that biological control must be viewed as a global endeavour and provides suggestions to move practices forward in a changing world. Biological Control is an invaluable resource for conservation specialists, pest management practitioners and those who research invasive species, as well as students studying pest management science.

Chapter 7 describes the fundamental role of randomness in quantum mechanics, in generating the first biomolecules, and in biological evolution. Experiments testing the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen paradox have demonstrated, via Bell’s inequalities, that no local hidden variable theory can provide a viable alternative to quantum mechanics, with its fundamental randomness built in. Randomness presumably plays an equally important role in the chemical assembly of a wide array of polymer molecules to be sampled for their ability to store genetic information and self-replicate, fueling the sort of abiogenesis assumed in the RNA world hypothesis of life’s beginnings. Evidence for random mutations in biological evolution, microevolution of both bacteria and antibodies and macroevolution of the species, is briefly reviewed. The importance of natural selection in guiding the adaptation of species to changing environments is emphasized. A speculative role of cosmological natural selection for black-hole fecundity in the evolution of universes is discussed.

The importance of larval dispersal in the deep ocean is generally acknowledged in studies of genetic connectivity, conservation, and population ecology, but our understanding of the underlying reproductive, developmental, and oceanographic processes remains rudimentary. Recent efforts at modeling deep-sea dispersal have generally taken the form of sensitivity analyses, because biological parameters for the models are lacking. In this review, what is known about the evolution of biological parameters that may influence dispersal times, depth distributions, and trajectories, including modes of development, vertical ontogenetic migration, are examined, as well as the ecological release from predators enabling slower developmental rates and longer dispersal times. Phylogenetic constraints are important in many groups, yet there are modifications in larval form, developmental mode, egg flotation, parental investment, and reproductive timing that appear to be unique to the deep sea and that influence dispersal. For instance, larval duration in certain taxa is longer in the deep-water species than in many shallow-water relatives.

What is unconscious or implicit bias, and what is its importance in understanding racial discrimination? This VSI tackles these questions, and also shows why racism is an ongoing problem. Finally, it explains why there has been a resurgence of national populist and far-right movements and explores their implications for the future of racism.

Epidemiological studies of depression give important insights into populations at higher risk of depression, but not everyone in certain high-risk circumstances will develop a clinical depression. ‘Models of depression’ highlights some of the most well-known biological, psychological, and social models ranging from the monoamine hypothesis to Beck’s cognitive model, and then discusses attempts to integrate these into a multi-dimensional psycho-bio-social theory. It highlights the interaction between stress and vulnerability factors, and the importance of considering the origins of the vulnerabilities. In reality, there is no one cause and no single pathway to depression and multiple factors increase vulnerability to depression.
