Gravity models are used to explain bilateral flows related to the sizes of bilateral partners, a measure of distance between them and other influences on interaction costs. The underlying idea is rather simple. The greater the masses of two bodies and the smaller the distance between them, the stronger they attract each other. This concept is applied to several research topics such as trade, migration or foreign direct investment. Even though the basic idea of gravity models is rather simple, they can become very complex when it comes to the choice of models or estimation methods. The package \textbf{gravity} targets to provide \proglang{R} users with the functions necessary to execute the most common estimation methods for gravity models, especially for cross-sectional data.

Grasp-related responses in neurons of the macaque rostral inferior parietal lobule [PF/PFG and the anterior intraparietal area (AIP)] are modulated by task context. Event-related functional MRI was used to determine whether this is true in putative homologs of the human cortex, the rostral inferior parietal lobule (rIPL) and the anterior intraparietal sulcus (aIPS). Fifteen healthy, right-handed adults were required to select prospectively the most comfortable way to grasp a horizontally oriented handle using the cued hand (left or right). In the “no-rotation” condition, the task was simply to grasp the handle, whereas in the “rotation” condition, the goal was to plan to grasp and rotate it into a vertical orientation with the cued end (medial or lateral) pointing downward. In both conditions, participants remained still and indicated their grip preferences by pressing foot pedals. As in overt grasping, participants' grip preferences were significantly influenced by anticipation of the demands associated with handle rotation. Activity within the aIPS and rIPL increased bilaterally in both the rotation and no-rotation conditions. Importantly, these responses were significantly greater in the rotation vs. no-rotation condition. Similar context effects were detected in the presupplementary motor area, caudal intraparietal sulcus/superior parietal lobule, and bilateral dorsal and left ventral premotor cortices. Grasp representations within the rIPL and aIPS are sensitive to predicted task demands and play a role in context-sensitive grip selection. Moreover, the findings provide additional evidence that areas involved in the sensorimotor control of grasp also contribute to feedforward planning.

Traumatic tears of the meniscus are well reported in the literature. Rarely, bilateral meniscal tears occur. A PubMed search found that only three cases of bilateral medial meniscus bucket handle type tears have been reported. Treatment options range from partial meniscectomy to repair of the meniscal tear. Repair is reported to be more successful in the vascular red-red or red-white zones. We present the case of a 23-year-old female who sustained simultaneous bilateral medial meniscus bucket handle type tears in an automobile accident. She was treated in a staged fashion with knee arthroscopy. Her meniscus tears were both found to be in the vascularized zone and meniscal tear repair was conducted. At two weeks postoperatively, she had excellent resolution of her symptoms and has returned to pain-free weight-bearing. She has remained pain-free at six-month follow-up.

One purpose of the present study was to compare indices of finger coordination during force production by the fingers of the right hand and of the left hand. The other purpose was to study the relation between the phenomena of force deficit during multifinger one-hand tasks and of bilateral force deficit during two-hand tasks. Thirteen healthy right-handed subjects performed maximal voluntary force production tasks with different finger combinations involving fingers of one hand or of both hands together. Fingers of the left hand demonstrated lower peak forces, higher indices of finger enslaving, and similar indices of force deficit. Significant bilateral effects during force production by fingers of both hands acting in parallel were seen only during tasks involving different fingers or finger groups in the two hands (asymmetrical tasks). The bilateral deficit effects were more pronounced in the hand whose fingers generated higher forces. These findings suggest a generalization of an earlier introduced principle of minimization of secondary moments. They also may be interpreted as suggesting that bilateral force deficit is task-specific and may reflect certain optimization principles.

SummaryThe aim of this study was to examine force production during maximal isometric handgrip in unilateral (UL) and bilateral (BL) tasks in right- and left-handed subjects. Ten right-handed (RH) and 8 left-handed (LH) young men were studied. The subjects were instructed, after a command, to perform a shot-like handgrip, raising maximal force as fast as possible. Three series were performed as follows: 1) UL - right handgrip; 2) UL - left handgrip; 3) BL handgrip. We measured peak force, time to peak of force and rate of force. The BL/UL ratios for the right (R) and left (L) hand and L/R ratios for the UL and BL tasks were calculated. The L/R ratios for peak force and force rate in RH group ranged across all tasks and conditions from 0.71 to 0.75. They were significantly lower than 1 (p<0.01). These ratios did not differ significantly from 1 for LH subjects (0.98–1.02), indicating the handedness in RH group only. The BL/UL ratios for peak force were 0.89 and 0.89 in RH, suggesting symmetrical bilateral strength deficit. The magnitude of the bilateral deficit in LH group was larger for the dominant (L) hand compared to non dominant (R) hand – 0.93 and 0.97 (p<0.05) respectively, suggesting an asymmetry of bilateral deficit in LH. These ratios for time of force and rate of force indicated bilateral deficit (BD) in the dominant hand of RH group only.

Aim: To investigate the role of white matter integrity in the pathophysiology of tinnitus, and also to analyze the whole brain for white matter changes quantitatively by comparing tinnitus patients with healthy controls based on the affected side of the tinnitus using Tract Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS).Methods: Total of 41 right-handed tinnitus patients and 35 age-matched right-handed healthy controls were initially examined non-invasively in resting-state using the 3.0T MRI scanner. We obtained the estimated Fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), Axial Diffusivity (AD), Radial Diffusivity (RD), and Mode of Anisotropy (MO) data for each subject. TBSS was used to perform group statistical analysis of DTI data from each group. Results: Compared to controls in right-sided tinnitus patients, FA and MO were decreased, and MD was normal with decreased AD and increased RD. FA and AD showed similar decreased values (t>1.5, FWEcorrected P<0.05) in the right corticospinal tract, right superior longitudinal fasciculus, and right inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus. Compared to controls with left-sided tinnitus patients, FA and MO were decreased, and MD was also increased with decreased AD with increased RD in patients. MO showed significantly decreased values (t>1.5, FWEcorrected P<0.05) of MO in Forceps major, bilateral cingulum (especially the left), and bilateral anterior thalamic radiation. Bilaterally affected tinnitus patients showed no difference when compared to controls. Conclusion: After analyzing the whole brain for white matter changes quantitatively using TBSS, changes were observed in unilaterally affected tinnitus patients compared to controls. Our findings indicated cross-modal plasticity could have caused changes in somatosensory, audio-visual, limbic, and attention pathways.Nepal Journal of Radiology Vol.5(1-2) 2015: 1-12

Background. We have used proton magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy to measure hippocampus/amygdala volumes and anterior hippocampal metabolite concentrations (N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), creatine/phosphocreatine and choline) in subjects with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), schizophrenia and in normal controls.Method. Four groups of right-handed patients were selected: 12 with TLE and psychosis (EP), 12 with TLE and no psychosis (ENP), 26 with schizophrenia, and 38 normal controls. Imaging and spectroscopy were performed with a 1.5T Signa GE scanner.Results. The schizophrenia group showed a significant left-sided reduction in all metabolites. In the epilepsy groups NAA was reduced bilaterally. The NAA reduction in the EP group was greater than in the ENP group, especially on the left, although the result did not reach significance. Total hippocampus/amygdala volumes showed no significant differences in any of the groups when compared with normal controls. When compared with controls significant, specific regional volume reductions were present bilaterally in the EP group and in the left hippocampus/amygdala in schizophrenia. The regional volume reduction found in schizophrenia was also present in EP but not in ENP.Conclusion. Spectroscopic abnormalities were more pronounced in the epilepsy groups and were bilateral, and abnormalities in schizophrenia were left sided. Specific regional hippocampus/amygdala volume reductions were more marked in the EP group and were bilateral. Left-sided regional volume reduction identified in the dominant hemisphere of schizophrenics was also present in EP patients, but not in ENP, suggesting that this region in the left temporal lobe may be significant in the aetiology of psychosis. This is further supported by the predominantly left-sided NAA reduction in schizophrenia. High resolution morphometric studies may identify specific regions of the brain associated with the development of psychosis.

Abstract Objective Moyamoya is a rare, progressive cerebrovascular disorder characterized by carotid artery stenosis or occlusion. Tiny “moyamoya” blood vessels open at the brain base to compensate, often resulting in large vessel ischemic strokes or from hemorrhage of moyamoya vessels. Peak incidence in adults is 30 to 50 years old and 30% progress bilaterally. 54 year-old right-handed Black Haitian female with 13 years of education presented with new stroke, now diagnosed with bilateral moyamoya syndrome. Premorbid history includes hypertension, Type II Diabetes Mellitus, patent foramen ovale, and malignant phyllodes breast tumor treated by resection and local radiation. Presents with no traditional risk factors for moyamoya (e.g., brain radiation, sickle cell disease, neurofibromatosis). Method Five years previously patient experienced multi-focal embolic MCA strokes from left internal carotid occlusion attributed to hypercoagulability of malignancy, returning to previous activities except driving. Present perfusion CT showed complete occlusion of bilateral cavernous carotid arteries. Diagnostic angiogram showed collateral system via PCA-MCA pial-pial collaterals in parieto-occipital-temporal regions, and leptomeningeal collaterals to ACA territory. She underwent bilateral STA-MCA direct bypass. Results Acute neuropsychological testing conducted in Haitian Creole by native-speaking trainee showed expressive aphasia, orientation to person and situation, ability to follow 1-step commands, moderately impaired naming of familiar objects, reduced sustained attention. Also left hemiparesis, right gaze preference, and left homonymous hemianopsia. Conclusions The present case study delineates development of secondary moyamoya in a Black Haitian woman without known risk factors, resulting in significant cognitive-linguistic deficits consistent with brain findings. Limitations include lack of validated measures in Haitian Creole.

1. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 1.5 T was used to investigate the lateralization of prefrontal cortex activity during internal mental calculation in 16 human volunteers (8 right-handed and 8 left-handed). Subjects were asked to perform two different tasks: 1) a serial subtraction of prime numbers and 2) a control task in which they mentally recited numbers. 2. Signal modifications were regularly observed in the prefrontal cortex (Brodmann's area 46) during the serial subtraction of prime numbers, whereas the number listing task poorly activated the same areas. 3. In right-handed subjects, activation was clearly lateralized in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, whereas a frequent bilateral activation was found in left-handed subjects. 4. We conclude that prefrontal activation during mental calculation is lateralized in a manner similar to that reported during linguistic tasks, i.e., a clear lateralization in right- but not in left-handed subjects.

We tested Banich's hypothesis that the benefits of bihemispheric processing were enhanced as task complexity increased, when some procedural shortcomings in the previous studies were overcome by using Japanese Kana script-matching tasks. In Exp. 1, the 20 right-handed subjects were given the Physical-Identity task (Katakana-Katakana scripts matching) and the Name-Identity task (Katakana-Hiragana scripts matching). On both tasks, a pair of Kana scripts was tachistoscopically presented in the left, right, and bilateral visual fields. Distractor stimuli were also presented with target Kana scripts on both tasks to equate the processing load between the hemispheres. Analysis showed that, while a bilateral visual-field advantage was found on the name-identity task, a unilateral visual-field advantage was found on the physical-identity task, suggesting that, as the computational complexity of the encoding stage was enhanced, the benefits of bilateral hemispheric processing increased. In Exp. 2, the 16 right-handed subjects were given the same physical-identity task as in Exp. 1, except Hiragana scripts were used as distractors instead of digits to enhance task difficulty. Analysis showed no differences in performance between the unilateral and bilateral visual fields. Taking into account these results of physical-identity tasks for both Exps. 1 and 2, enhancing task demand in the stage of ignoring distractors made the unilateral visual-field advantage obtained in Exp. 1 disappear in Exp. 2. These results supported Banich's hypothesis.

Background Headache and Neurological Deficits with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Lymphocytosis (HaNDL) is an increasingly recognised syndrome but the aetiology remains unclear. HaNDL has striking clinical features similar to Familial Hemiplegic Migraine (FHM), commonly related to gene mutations encoding the P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC). Case report We report a case of HaNDL associated with high P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channel antibodies. Extensive investigations excluded alternative diagnoses and CSF lymphocytosis resolved within 3 months. The case was complicated by raised intracranial pressure resulting in an enlarged blind spot, papilloedema and bilateral lateral rectus palsies. Conclusion This novel association of P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channel antibodies with HaNDL has implications for the pathology of HaNDL and spectrum of voltage-gated calcium channel-antibody disorders. We compare the clinical features of FHM and HaNDL and the potential pathological role of these antibodies. This case also highlights that raised intracranial pressure is a common feature of HaNDL, rarely resulting in serious complications.

Microscopically, the lungs had lymphocytic, neutrophilic infiltration of the interstitium and alveolar walls. There was necrosis of terminal bronchiolar epithelium and terminal bronchioles, and surrounding alveoli contained necrotic and exfoliated epithelial cells admixed with histiocytes and syncytial cells. Additional lesions included nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis, and epidermal hyperkeratosis and hyperplasia with syncytial cell formation. PCR screening for 12 human respiratory viruses was positive for orthopneumovirus in multiple tissues, including lung, and immunohistochemical staining for human orthopneumovirus detected viral antigen within bronchial epithelial cells. IHC and PCR for measles virus on preserved sections were negative. White-handed gibbons have not been previously reported as hosts for human orthopneumovirus, an important respiratory pathogen of both primates and humans.

Left handers and women show less anatomical brain asymmetry, larger corpus callosum and more bilateral representation of specific functions. Sensory and cognitive components of cortical auditory evoked potentials (AEF) have been shown to be asymmetric in right handed males and to be influenced by stimulus intensity. In this study the influence of sex, handedness and stimulus intensity upon AEP components is investigated under basal conditions of passive attention. 14 right handed males, 14 right handed females, 14 left handed males, and 14 left handed females were studied while lying awake and paying passive attention to auditory stimulation (series of 100 binaural clicks, duration 1 msec, rate 1/sec, at four intensities). Cz, C3 and C4 referenced to linked mastoids and right EOG were recorded. Analysis time was 400 msec, average evoked potentials were based on 100 clicks. Stimulus intensity and gender affect early sensory components (P1N1 and N1P2) at central leads, asymmetry is influenced only by handedness, right handers showing larger P1N1 amplitudes over the right hemisphere.

Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines were followed, with eligibility criteria defined according to participants, interventions, comparators, study design (PICOS): (p) healthy indoor volleyball players of any sex, age group, or competitive level; (i) exposure to landing after spike actions during official matches AND/OR simulated 6 vs. 6 games AND/OR analytical training conditions AND/OR laboratorial experiments; (c) not mandatory; (o) data on landing mechanics after spike actions, including reporting of whether the landing was unilateral or bilateral; (s) no restrictions imposed on study design. Searches were performed in seven electronic databases (Cochrane Library, EBSCO, PubMed, Scielo, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science) on 23 April 2021. Results: Automated searches provided 420 results. Removal of 119 duplicates resulted in 301 records being screened for titles and abstracts. A total of 25 studies were eligible for full-text analysis. Of these, eight studies were deemed eligible for inclusion in the review. Studies showed that (i) attackers landed asymmetrically 68% of the times (61% left leg, 7% right leg); (ii) bilateral asymmetries were observed for the hip, knee, and ankle joints; (iii) bilateral asymmetries were observed even when players were instructed to land evenly on two feet; (iv) landing contact of the leg opposite to the hitting arm preceded the contact of the homolateral leg. One match analysis study showed that men landed more often on the left (31.5%) or right foot (8.5%) than women (23.7% and 1.6%). Conclusions: Studies analyzing spike landing showed a prevalence of unilateral landings (mostly the left leg first, for right-handed players) in men and women but more prevalently in men. Avascular necrosis of the metacarpal head is a rare disease. We herein report a case with varying degrees of lesions in the third and fourth metacarpal heads of the right hand and the third metacarpal head of the left hand. The patient was a 37-year-old male right-handed mechanical worker who presented with persistent dull pain in the right hand after labor work for more than a year. The 3 lesions in this patient were treated differently based on their clinical imaging manifestations. The neurologic function of the right hand recovered by the 18-month follow-up; only a slight limitation remained in the right middle finger. This is the first report of 1 patent who received 2 different treatment methods simultaneously and both provided a satisfactory clinical result.

Bilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) dissections are rare. Typical clinical presentation includes cerebral ischaemia, neck/headache, Horner's syndrome & pulsatile tinnitus1.We present a forty-two year old right-handed man admitted to hospital with a ten day gradual onset headache, altered taste, widespread cognitive impairments, horizontal diplopia and a right Horner's syndrome. There was no history of trauma. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple small embolic infarcts in carotid territories of both cerebral hemispheres. Computed tomography angiogram (CTA) of intracranial and extracranial vessels revealed occlusion of the left ICA and attenuation of the right ICA below the skull base.Symptoms resolved within 3–5 days of starting sub-cutaneous low molecular weight heparin and he was then anticoagulated with warfarin for six months. Repeat CTA at 4 months showed persisting complete left ICA occlusion but complete recanalisation of the right ICA.This is the first description of cognitive changes following bilateral ICA artery dissections. Whilst ICA dissection presentations are usually explained by embolic phenomena or local effects upon ICA walls, the mechanism here is probably due to cerebral hypoperfusion. Cognitive assessment should be performed in all patients presenting with ICA dissection especially when it is bilateral.

AbstractStudy ObjectiveTo reveal that while long duration of anosmia and ageusia has been seen with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) [Doty 1997], repetitive shorter epochs ofanosmia and ageusia has not heretofore been presented.MethodsCase Study: A 39 year old right-handed male, with a history of MS, presents with six years MS concurrent with epochs of anosmia and ageusia. The anosmia andageusia present concurrently, preventing him from smelling and tasting his meal. At baseline, he is able to smell and taste coffee, peppermint, gum, sweet and salty foods, rating his smell and taste at 70% normal. However, during the epochal events, he reports the inability to smell and taste white rice, shrimp, meat, butter, carrots, onions, spinach, and sour foods. He states that these episodes occur approximately ten times a week, last for two hours, and rates his smell and taste from 0-10% during these events.ResultsAbnormalities Neurological Examination: Cranial Nerve (CN) Examination: CN II: bilateral pale discs. CN III, IV, VI: bilateral ptosis. CN IX, X: decreased gag reflex bilaterally. Motor Examination: Drift Test: positive left pronator drift, with right adductor digiti minimi sign and right cerebellar spooning. Sensory Examination: Ipswich Touch Test: decreased in left lower extremity. Temperature: decreased in left lower extremity. Rydel-Seiffer Vibratory Test: bilateral upper extremities 5 and bilateral lower extremities 3. Tandem Gait: unstable. Cerebellar Examination: Holmes Rebound Phenomena: positive with left greater than right. Reflexes: 1+ bilateral upper extremities, absent bilateral lower extremities. Neuropsychiatric Examination: Animal Fluency Test: 15 (abnormal). Clock Drawing Test: 3 (abnormal). Center for Neurologic Study Lability Scale: 16 (pseudobulbar affect).ConclusionPrimary olfactory dysfunction with secondary inhibition of retronasal smell and perceived taste [Gruss 2015] can be an etiology. Such an olfactory dysfunction may reflect variation in nasal mucosal engorgement due to normal variability of the olfactory cycle [Eccles 1978]. This phenomenon is an unlikely due to the short duration ofepochs. The cause of anosmia and ageusia in this patient suggests a central lesion involved in the processing of both smell and taste. Transient rapid symptoms associated with temperature change, as in Uhthoff’s phenomenon seen in MS, can manifest with deficiency in special senses including visual field loss [Davis 2010]. Such also may be the origin for the chemosensory loss seen here. While this phenomenon may be induced by hot baths, more subtle temperature changes may also induce such symptoms [Romani 2000]. Given that olfactory threshold changes have been demonstrated in acute inflammatory changes in MS, such a temperature related etiology is more likely to manifest [Lutterotti 2011]. MS patients should be screened for chemosensory dysfunction, and those with chemosensory dysfunction should be assessed for demyelinating disease.Funding AcknowledgementsSmell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation

In recent years, more and more platforms where both buyers and sellers can write reviews for each other have emerged. These bilateral reviews are important information sources in the decision-making process of both buyers and sellers. In this study, we develop a comprehensive relational topic modeling approach to analyze bilateral reviews for better online transaction prediction. The prediction results will enable the platform to increase the chance that the buyer and seller reach a transaction by presenting buyers with offerings that are more likely to lead to a transaction. Within the framework of the relational topic model, we embed a topic structure with both shared and corpus-specific topics to better handle text corpora generated from different sources. Our model facilitates the extraction of the appropriate topic structure from different document collections that helps enhance the transaction prediction performance. Comprehensive experiments conducted on real-world data sets collected from sharing economy platforms demonstrate that our new model significantly outperforms other alternatives. The robust results obtained from multiple sets of comparisons demonstrate the value of bilateral reviews if they are processed properly. Our approach can be applied to many platforms where bilateral reviews are available.

(1) Background: The primary motor cortex (M1) experiences reorganization following spinal cord injury (SCI). However, there is a paucity of research comparing bilateral M1 organization in SCI and questions remain to be answered. We explored the presence of somatotopy within the M1 representation of arm muscles, and determined whether anatomical shifts in these representations occur, and investigated the symmetry in organization between the two hemispheres.; (2) Methods: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to map the representation of the biceps, flexor carpi radialis and abductor pollicis brevis (APB) bilaterally in nine individuals with chronic incomplete cervical spinal cord injury and nine aged- and handed-matched uninjured controls. TMS was delivered over a 6 × 5 point grid that encompassed M1 using an intensity specific to the resting motor threshold for each muscle tested.; (3) Results: Results indicate that, compared to controls, muscle representations in SCI are shifted medially but preserve a general somatotopic arrangement, and that territory dedicated to the APB muscle is greater.; (4) Conclusions: These findings demonstrate differences in the organization of M1 between able-bodied controls and those with incomplete cervical SCI. This altered organization may have future implications in understanding the functional deficits observed in SCI and rehabilitation techniques aimed at restoring function.

The Svara- Yoga concept of ida-, pingala- andsushumna-svara—representing rest, active, and turbulent states—was examined in this study by recording nostril dominance (svara) and bilateral volar GSR (galvanic skin resistance) as an indicator of sympathetic activity under field and laboratory conditions. Sympathetic activity was low in the ida-svara (left nostril dominance) group, higher in the pingala-svara (right nostril dominance)group, and was maximum in the sushumna-svara(undecided nostril dominance) group of subiects under both field and laboratory conditions. This finding agreed with the traditional Svara-Yoga descriptions. The volar GSR on the right side more readily varied with the svara than the left volar GSR, particularly in the physically relaxed subjects under laboratory conditions. The latter observation was worth noting because the subjects were right-handed. The right side could be recommended as the standard site for recording volar GSR to closely reflect the sympathetic activity, particularly so when subjects were given the opportunity for physical rest.

Functional MRI (fMRI) has emerged as a safe alternative to invasive procedures for determining hemispheric language dominance prior to neurosurgery. Despite this, there are currently no standardized fMRI protocols that have been explored in healthy controls to determine the influence of individual patient variables on the results, which poses challenges in clinical interpretation of ambiguous findings in patient populations. In addition, most fMRI protocols are not suitable for individuals with visual or intellectual disabilities (IQ<70). In the current study, 61 healthy adults (ages: 18-74 years) completed two fMRI paradigms for language mapping. One paradigm used visually based stimuli and has shown good face validity to date in our center. The second paradigm used auditory stimuli presented at slowed speed and was designed for individuals with visual or cognitive dysfunction but has not yet been used clinically. The paradigms demonstrated 97% agreement in classifying individuals as left-hemisphere, right-hemisphere, and bilaterally dominant. Cases that were classified differently showed bilateral dominance in response to either paradigm. Dominance classification rates for right- and left-handed individuals were largely in keeping with published data. Within the left-handed group, IQ and education were positively correlated with laterality indices generated by both paradigms (r values range: 0.44-0.95, p<0.01), suggesting that individuals with higher IQ and formal education were more likely to be classified as left-hemisphere dominant in the current sample. This study will help improve clinical interpretation of language fMRI maps by identifying factors that might impact results (like IQ). It also offers an alternative paradigm to make this procedure more accessible to a broader range of patients. Future studies will replicate results with a sample of patients with epilepsy across a broad range of intellectual abilities.

The Marshall Islands claimed that the respondent states had failed to meet their obligation to negotiate the cessation of the nuclear arms race and nuclear disarmament in good faith, either under Article VI of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (claim against the UK) and/or customary law (against all three respondents). All three respondents formulated objections to jurisdiction and admissibility. In all three cases, they objected that a “dispute” did not exist between them and the applicant. The Court, by a narrow majority (extremely narrow in the case against the UK: by the casting vote of the President), declined to exercise jurisdiction on the basis that no dispute existed between the parties.

Background: Nerve conduction study (NCS) is useful for evaluation of nerve, muscle, and/or neuromuscular function. Neurophysiologist interprets NCS with consideration of various anthropometric and technical parameters viz. age, gender, height, temperature etc. apart from the underlying pathology. Fewer studies have reported the effect of limb dominance on NCS. Moreover, the findings are controversial. Therefore, author aimed to investigate the effect of limb dominance on motor nerve conduction study parameters. Methods: This cross-sectional comparative study included sixty healthy individuals (44 right and 16 left handed) of either sex with age 18 to 30 years. The NCS parameters of median and ulnar nerves were assessed by stimulating it and recording from the muscle and skin overlying the nerve respectively using Digital Nihon Kohden machine. The obtained data were analyzed using independent sample t-test.Results: Right ulnar nerve onset latency was significantly longer in left-handed individuals (1.85±0.508 ms vs 1.62±0.195 ms, p=0.012). The left ulnar nerve F wave minimum latency (25.88±0.74 ms vs 24.46±2.64 ms, p=0.002) was significantly longer in left-handed individuals. Likewise, right ulnar nerve distal latency (2.45±0.76 ms vs 2.14±0.39 ms, p=0.044), and right ulnar nerve F wave minimum (25.9±1.21 ms vs 24.85 ms±1.74, p=0.030) were significantly high in left-handed individuals. Conclusions: NCS parameters in terms of latencies were longer in left-handed individuals. Therefore, limb dominance seems to be an important factor one should pay attention during bilateral comparison of obtained data in neurophysiological reporting of referred cases.

Neuropsychological investigation while these symptoms were resolving revealed impairment on face processing tests. We suggest that these impairments contributed to his Cotard delusion by heightening feelings of unreality, and that the underlying pathophysiology and neuropsychology of the Cotard delusion may be related to other problems involving delusional misidentification.

101 Introduction: Although bilateral motor network overactivations during finger motion are documented after stroke, their relation with actual recovery is unknown. One longitudinal study reported a shift of activations from the affected to the unaffected hemisphere with elapsing time (Marshall et al, Stroke , 2000;31:656), but whether this shift was related to recovery was not assessed. Subjects and Methods: In this prospective, longitudinal study of 5 R-handed pts (59±13 yrs) with R-sided hemiparesis due to first-ever left SCS, we obtained two 3D-PET H 2 O 15 studies(ECAT HR+), the 1 st at 1–4 and the 2 nd at ∼8 months after onset (PET1 and PET2, respectively), replicating 4 times 2 conditions: i) rest with eyes closed, metronome on; ii) metronome-cued right thumb-to-index tapping (TIT) at fixed-rate (1.26 Hz). Data were assessed individually with SPM96 and p< 0.05, corrected; controls were 7 healthy age-matched R-handed subjects. We computed correlations between R hand motor performance (max number of TITs in 15 s) and Laterality Index (LI = the affected-to-unaffected-hemisphere ratio of activated voxels, Cramer et al, Stroke , 1997;28:2518). Results and comments: motor scores significantly improved from PET1 to PET2 (18±4 and 29±5, respectively, p<0.05, paired t-test); 2 pts exhibited mirror movement at PET1 and 1 at PET2. Significant overactivations at PET1 affected the whole motor network bilaterally, but were considerably less extensive at PET2, with a significant LI shift (.69±.11 and .08±.54, respectively, p<0.05). Shift magnitude was negatively correlated (Spearman rho= -.975, p<0.05) with clinical recovery (expressed as motor score changes), that is, the more the laterality shifted (i.e., deviated from normality), the lesser the recovery. Conclusion: The shift towards the unaffected hemisphere confirms earlier report, though performance was fixed here. This study is the first to document a correlation between recovery and brain activation patterns after stroke, such that the greater the shift, the worse the recovery.

Existing sinogram restoration methods cannot handle noises and nonstationary artifacts simultaneously. Although bilateral filter provides an efficient way to preserve image details while denoising, its performance in sinogram restoration for low-dosed X-ray computed tomography (LDCT) is unsatisfied. The main reason for this situation is that the range filter of the bilateral filter measures similarity by sinogram values, which are polluted seriously by noises and nonstationary artifacts of LDCT. In this paper, we propose a simple method to obtain satisfied restoration results for sinogram of LDCT. That is, the range filter weighs the similarity by Gaussian smoothed sinogram. Since smoothed sinogram can reduce the influence of both noises and nonstationary artifacts for similarity measurement greatly, our new method can provide more satisfied denoising results for sinogram restoration of LDCT. Experimental results show that our method has good visual quality and can preserve anatomy details in sinogram restoration even in both noises and non-stationary artifacts.
