A review of the literature shows that capacity and saturation flow rate for on-street bicycle lanes at intersections have not been measured on the basis of bicycle discharge at intersections at the start of the green phase. The Highway Capacity Manual 2000 recommends a saturation flow rate of 2,000 bicycles per hour for a bicycle lane at a signalized intersection. However, this recommendation is not based on field studies at the intersection and is not a function of the width of the bicycle lane. A revised estimate is provided of saturation flow rate, and an estimate is provided of start-up lost time for bicycles based on data collected at the stop line of signalized intersections. In addition, the lateral stopped distance of automobiles from bicycle lanes, the lateral stopped distance of bicycles from adjacent lanes, and the lateral and longitudinal stopped distance between pairs of bicycles at a signalized intersections are presented. Bicycles may form more than one queue within a bicycle lane at the stop line. Since bicycles maintain a certain distance from the adjacent lane and the curb, the number of queues formed varies based on the width of the bicycle lane. Therefore, the saturation flow rate for a bicycle lane depends on the number of queues or the width of the bicycle lane. The saturation flow rates for bicycle lanes of varying widths are proposed on the basis of the lateral stopped distance of bicycles. Empirical evidence from intersections in Colorado and California is used to propose a new method to estimate the capacity for a bicycle lane.

This study aimed to quantitatively investigate the effect of bicycle infrastructure on car usage. The mixed logit model with random coefficients was used to capture the differences in individuals’ preferences. Based on data from a stated preference survey conducted in Huhhot, China, the estimated results showed that the mixed logit model provides better fitting than the standard logit model. Considerable variations were found in individuals’ attitudes toward the use of cars and bicycles. Riding a bicycle is preferred by most individuals. Furthermore, based on the constraints for maintaining the effect on car usage equal, the equivalent change in parking fees for improvement in bicycle infrastructures was estimated. The results showed that the effect of a 100 m reduction in walking distance to bicycle stations on the probability of driving is the same as that of an approximately 2.00 yuan/h (US 0.30$/h) increase in the parking fees, and the effect of providing bike lanes is in line with additional parking fees of approximately 3.00 yuan/h (US 0.45$/h). The findings of this study can be an important reference for decision makers to consider improvements in bicycle systems and rational allocation of infrastructure investment and road resources.

This paper has certain reference value for study of rail transit and bicycle traffic.

The purpose of this study was to determine how pavement markings influence bicyclist and motorist positioning, particularly how far bicyclists travel from parked cars. The research examined the effects of the sequential addition of the component markings of a bicycle lane on a road with on-street parking in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The data measured were the distance that cars parked from the curb, the distance that bicyclists rode from the curb, and the distance that traveling motor vehicles drove from the curb. Data on bicyclists and moving motor vehicles were gathered by videotaping. The three pavement marking treatments–-an edge line demarcating the travel lane, the edge line and bicycle symbols, and a full bicycle lane–-were all effective at influencing bicyclists to ride farther away from parked cars than when no pavement markings were present. All three treatments significantly increased the percentage of cyclists riding more than 9 and 10 ft from the curb; these distances were used as benchmarks for where cyclists should ride to be farther from the opening-door zone of a parked car. There was variation between the signalized and the uncontrolled intersections. Before-and-after intercept surveys of cyclists and motorists were administered. In the before survey, cyclists most often responded that the best way to improve bicycling on Hampshire Street was to add bicycle lanes. Cyclists also rated the full bicycle lane most favorably in the after survey. There was no change in cyclist comfort levels between the before and the after surveys. When motorists were asked what made them most aware of cyclists on the street; the most common response in the before survey was “nothing.” In the after survey, the most common response was “the bicycle lane.”

The aim of this study was to determine the differences in underlying factors of Zagreb cycling, compared to the "types of cyclists" (driving style), i.e. different ways of using bicycles as a means of transport. The study included over 3,000 frequent participants in urban traffic cycling, sample of members of the association Cyclist Union (N = 1259) and snowball sample of "typical" of cyclists, i.e. people who are using the bike, but are not the members of the Cyclist Union (N = 1831), using the conveniently assembled questionnaire. Study participants who bike used in various applications prefer the safest driving style (only on sidewalks and bike paths / lines). Barriers of the weather conditions are ubiquitous in the safest driving style. Daily, weekly and yearly riding a bicycle are more often found in those who prefer the safest driving style. Cyclists who drive with medium secure style (roads with less traffic and lower speeds), more often ride a bike, as compared with those who prefer the safest driving style. Having a better bike line / track and other infrastructure is the most often considered at those with the highest risk driving style. The results provide the guidance for local authorities and for the cyclists to improve the conditions for a safer and more often by bicycle circulation in the City of Zagreb and its surroundings.

We write nonlinear equations of motion for an idealized benchmark bicycle in two different ways and verify their validity. We then present a complete description of hands-free circular motions. Three distinct families exist. (i) A handlebar-forward family, starting from capsize bifurcation off straight-line motion and ending in unstable static equilibrium, with the frame perfectly upright and the front wheel almost perpendicular. (ii) A handlebar-reversed family, starting again from capsize bifurcation but ending with the front wheel again steered straight, the bicycle spinning infinitely fast in small circles while lying flat in the ground plane. (iii) Lastly, a family joining a similar flat spinning motion (with handlebar forward), to a handlebar-reversed limit, circling in dynamic balance at infinite speed, with the frame near upright and the front wheel almost perpendicular; the transition between handlebar forward and reversed is through moderate-speed circular pivoting, with the rear wheel not rotating and the bicycle virtually upright. Small sections of two families are stable.

Recycling and recovery of materials and energy from waste is a key factor to mitigate virgin material demands and reduce resource consumption by utilising waste as a resource for new products. However, some critical materials, such as neodymium, are barely recycled because of missing information on amount and disposition of these critical materials within the waste streams. The goal of the study is to quantify recycling potentials from small and electric motors originating from end-of-life vehicles (ELV), electric bicycles and industrial machinery in Germany and the EU with focus on currently lost rare earth elements. Furthermore, innovative approaches to improve recycling of these motors shall be investigated. Therefore, a calculation model to predict current and future waste streams and the incorporated recycling potentials has been developed. The results show an increasing trend of recycling potentials from small and electric motors for all waste streams. The recycling potential of neodymium is estimated at a range of 150 t to 240 t in 2020 in Germany. However, data inaccuracy and the calculation model are likely to cause overestimation of actually available recycling potential and have to be interpreted carefully. In conclusion, disassembly of small and electric motors from ELV and electric bicycles in combination with a subsequent specific recycling process has been identified as promising to improve utilisation of the recycling potentials of rare earth elements from small and electric motors. However, in case recycling quotas are the prior goal of improvement, the application and further optimisation of post shredder technology is more relevant.

Cet intermédiaire s'est montré très efficace par le passé dans la synthèse de sesquiterpènes naturels possédant le squelette bicyclo[5.3.0]décane (guaianes, guaianolides, azulènes...). Nous avons utilisé cette méthodologie dans une approche synthétique des thapsigargines, des guaianolides naturels à la structure complexe dont un dérivé est à l'étude contre le cancer de la prostate. Nos recherches et notre savoir-faire nous ont permis d'accéder à un intermédiaire avancé pouvant mener à cette famille de composés, il possède les groupements, insaturations et configurations clé nécessaires. Il peut par ailleurs servir de plateforme idéale pour accéder à des azulènes naturels. Nous avons alors en paralèle synthétisé des azulènes bleu, violet et rouge (dont il s'agit de la première synthèse pour ces derniers)

The diploma thesis was preceded by a specialized atelier focusing on the urban – architectural design of the area of „Vsetín – Ohrada“. During this project, I was mainly focusing on the analysis of the area and the basic design. The project focuses on the area in the southern part of Vsetín. Its borders are formed by Vsetínská Bečva from the northwest side, the 1st class expressway from the northeast side and the waterworks building from the south. The main goal of the project is to attract more visitors to the quiet nature oriented area, who will be provided with a large number of outdoor and indoor activities that can be done in the area. The area is separated by a bridge and an industrial zone from the outskirts of the city and thus lacks a connection to urban development. The project is therefore designed as a separate urban unit, reflecting the natural aspects of the whole area. The advantage of the place is the previously mentioned river Bečva flowing directly through the area and a bike path lining the right bank of this river. Buildings with added soil to create slopes with hangout areas form, among other things, a noise and aesthetic barrier from the city, turning attention to the river and nature. The grass-covered slopes will be made of soil obtained from the current slopes of soil under the auditorium around the spartakiad stadium as well as the excavation work of the newly designed buildings. These slopes also visually unify the buildings, contribute to the organic and natural appearance of the entire design, create hangout areas for spectators and add back the grass areas that were taken away because of the construction of the buildings.

While there has been considerable research regarding the role of Mobility Hubs in cities and transport networks, significant investment is required to develop these facilities. It is the correlation between investment, new users’ attraction and revenue generation that is the key for a sustainable development of Mobility Hubs and this investment must, therefore, be correctly assessed and targeted. This study aims to develop a methodology to determine the viability of investing in Mobility Hub features, weighing the investment on different Hub features and services against expected potential benefits and revenue generation, addressing the question: Can investment in Mobility Hub features be justified and, if so, which features maximize its expected positive impact? Based on a review of literature and definition of possible Hub features as variables, secondary research data was compiled to enable the analysis of expected impacts of each variable/feature in terms of new user’s attraction and revenue generation, which was then used to develop individual Net Present Value analysis of each feature. The result of these analysis demonstrates and concludes that different Hub features have the potential to generate substantially different investment outcomes, and that each feature should be analyzed individually prior to investment decision. It was also concluded by this research that the proposed assessment methodology can be used for future research on other listed Hub features, albeit with the constraint that primary data will be required when secondary research data is not available.

Because of environmental protection and leisure, bicycles become very popular and green products. Especially, the convenient characteristics of folding bicycle make it be the most popular green product. In order to create new customer groups, business must understand the demand of new markets; determine the segmentation and product line strategy that can increase profit. The thesis applied Quality Function Deployment(QFD)to help product development, product design and customer requirement management of bolding bicycle. Also, used Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP)to gain the weight of customers’ requirement. Finally, used Cluster Analysis to separate customers into market segment, found different customers’ preferences and came out a useful strategy for the segments to increase customer satisfaction.   The result of this thesis showed that segment 3, 4, 6 are different from common cognition. Segment 3 “electrical folding bicycle”, There are no well-known companies providing electrical folding bicycles in Taiwan, but this product line has a great potential to increase the profit of a company. Segment 4 “good-looks folding bicycle”, design and appearance are the most attractive factors to this segmentation, so company can provide folding bicycles which is good looking and not expensive to fulfill this requirement. Segment 6 “Price and convenient folding bicycle”, this segmentation focus on the price and the easy-carrying ability of folding bicycles. Besides, this thesis also found the customer characteristic of segments that can help provide some and suggestions on folding bicycle for bicycle companies.

In this study, the impact of the four kinds of materials were analyzed and compared bicycle, where D car made of carbon fiber frame process with very different characteristics and the other three bikes, and more with plenty of polymeric material is made, so the impact of higher than other frame nearly 40 times, if the car excluded D, exhibit the highest aluminum alloy frame vehicle impact point B, the weight of the lightest car B but since prominent increasing the rigidity and reduce the weight of the material characteristics, will need to add aluminum (Al) to vanadium (V) element, an aluminum element in this discovery, is the main material in three different bike, causing the bicycle to the main cause of environmental impact.

Bicycle is extremely popular and provides a very important means of transportation in Taiwan. The biggest threat to bicyclist is the head injury in a bicycle accident. Annually, there were 800 deaths and 17 000 hospitalizations resulting from bicycle accidents in USA. In Taiwan, there were around 304 head injury cases related to bicycle accidents every year. Bicyclists are urged to protect themselves in the event of a bicycle accident by wearing helmets. A bicycle helmet should maintain the desirable performance, which is reducing the head acceleration during impacts. Therefore, bicycle helmets are tested to ensure a minimum level of performance by the helmet for a range of criteria that affect safety. To test the energy absorbing capabilities of helmet, the results of the linear acceleration of the headform is measured during the impact test. Firstly, this study constructs a finite element model of helmet impact test using LS-DYNA software based on the EN 1078:2006、CPSC and SNELL B95 standard. To verify the accuracy of the proposed numerical model to simulate impact test, simulation results are compared with those obtained from experimental tests. The comparison results indicate that the proposed numerical model of impact test has considerable potential for evaluating the performance and safety effectiveness of helmet. During an accident, the main part of a helmet responsible for shock absorption is the energy absorbing liner. To determine a structure of liner that reaches high effective protection, helmet models with new liner material were considered. A comparative study of different liner materials on the impact performance has been performed using FE simulation based on three standards. The analyzed results indicated that the Expanded Polypropylene(EPP) liner material dominates over other liner materials. This new helmet liner material demonstrated high energy-absorbing capabilities. The design guideline obtained in this study may serve as a useful reference for designers on future development of helmet safety technologies. Furthermore, the finite element model of helmet impact test can be useful to evaluate the shock-absorption abilities.

Bike sharing is a typically structured non-motorized transportation service that provides users point-to-point transportation. The services are flexible to users as they do not have to wait in a line to pick up a bicycle from any bike sharing system and can return it to any other location of the bike sharing system. This chapter mainly focuses on why it is important to use bike sharing transportation rather than any other mode of transportation. In this chapter, the authors address the customer satisfaction level and focus on the service quality of the bike sharing system BIXI in Montreal. A questionnaire survey is conducted with the users of BIXI. A total of 580 responses are collected. Descriptive statistics, complaint analysis, and data analysis are done to identify areas of improvement.

In the last 20 years cities have undergone considerable changes. The current phase of expansion, which took place in the absence of demographic pressures, has diluted urban space into functional areas, scattered randomly throughout the area. The authors therefore identify new mobility needs, met mainly by private means, with implications in terms of congestion and air pollution. Sustainable mobility is a priority intervention for the EU. This chapter studies, after a discussion of the importance of sustainable mobility, cycling in Italy from an economic and strategic perspective. Promoting cycling is important for individual health, environmental sustainability, and transport demand management. In Italy, very few people use a bicycle on a regular basis. The analysis relies on national aggregate data as well as case studies of large and small cities in an Italian region.

<p>The bicycle viaduct is an effective method to solve the contradiction between the rapid development of urbanization and low carbon. In this paper, a 4.8km long viaduct was designed between the Happy Valley and Phoenix Peak park of Chengdu, China. The standard sections of the whole viaduct adopt steel box girder and Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) precast beam with 30m spans and 5.5m widths of bridge deck (single). And the UHPC connection plate is used to replace the traditional mechanical telescopic device to realize the continuous bridge deck between the ends of the simple beam, which embodies the concept of ‘green bridge’. This line focuses on the design of three nodes, which includes the five towers cable-stayed bridge, the double deck arch bridge across the Fu River and the continuous beam bridge in leisure area. The three bridges enrich the bridge modelling, reflecting the application of aesthetics in the bridge. The whole traffic is based on bicycle, which adopts separation traffic with double speed of fast and slow speed and can be used for sightseeing and travel. This design highlights the people-oriented, can ensure traffic safety and achieve a ‘safe travel, green travel’. Therefore, the viaduct is an effective means to solve the disharmony between the urban development and the environment.</p>

We analyze general steady turns of a benchmark bicycle model in the case of nonzero applied steer torque. In a general steady turn, the lean and steer angles are constant, the velocity of the bicycle must ensure moment balance about the contact line, and some torque must be applied to maintain the constant steer angle. We identify two boundaries in lean–steer plane: first, the region of kinematic feasibility, and second, the region where steady turns are feasible. In the region of feasible steady turns, we present level curves of these steady turning velocities and steer torques. Additionally, we present level curves of mechanical trail in the lean–steer plane.

To be competitive in today’s market, firms need to offer a variety of products that appeal to a diverse set of customer needs. Product line optimization provides a simple method to design for this challenge. Using a heterogeneous customer preference model allows the optimization to better explore the diversity in the market. The optimization should also consider aesthetic, engineering, manufacturing, and marketing constraints to ensure the feasibility of the final solution. However, as more constraints are added the difficulty of the optimization increases. There is an opportunity to reduce the difficulty of the optimization by allowing the heterogeneous customer preference model to handle a subset of these constraints termed design prohibitions. Design prohibitions include component incompatibility and dependency. This paper investigates whether design prohibitions should be handled solely in the heterogeneous customer preference model, solely in the optimization formulation, or in both. The effects of including design prohibitions in the creation of a hierarchical Bayes mixed logit model and a genetic algorithm based product line optimization are explored using a bicycle case study.

Abstract Many health, environmental, and quality-of-life benefits due to cycling have been identified, including exercise, zero-emissions, reduced pavement requirements compared to cars and busses, and nearly silent operation. A significant fraction of the population, however, is unable to join in this activity with traditional upright bicycles, including people with balance or joint limitations caused by injury, disease, or age. One solution to these ergonomic difficulties is the recumbent bicycle, but many riders find them difficult to balance and steer because of several factors, including center of mass location and distribution. Another solution, the recumbent tricycle, must have a wide axle track and/or low center of mass for lateral stability when turning, which requires more pavement and creates more aerodynamic drag than the bicycle equivalent. We present a solution that aims to combine the best attributes of these vehicles and eliminate the drawbacks: a tilting tricycle with variable stability that the rider can control manually. It balances and leans into corners like a bicycle when going fast, and it balances and stays upright like a tricycle when stopped or going slow to reduce the steering burden on the rider. Between these two extremes, the rider can finely adjust exactly how docile a bicycle it mimics.

Abstract This paper presents a technique based on the probabilistic road map algorithm for trajectory planning in autonomous driving. The objective is to provide an algorithm allowing to compute the trajectory of the vehicle by reducing the distance traveled and minimizing the lateral deviation and relative yaw angle of the vehicle with respect to the reference trajectory, while maximizing its longitudinal speed. The vehicle is considered as a 3 Degree-of-Freedom bicycle model and a Model Predictive Control algorithm is implemented to control the lateral and longitudinal dynamics. Both the control and trajectory generation algorithms take the road lane boundaries as the only input from the surrounding environment exploiting a simulated camera. The performance of the technique is compared with the case in which the reference trajectory is the central line between the lane boundaries. The proposed algorithm is validated in a simulated driving scenario.

It is well known that skilled bicycle riders can balance and propel themselves forward using motions of the handlebar. We present the complete nonlinear dynamics and control of such a pedal-less bicycle with a rider. Propulsion is achieved not by pedaling but by a cyclic motion of the steering axis of the bicycle. It is shown that this kind of actuation results in net forward motion of the bicycle and a building up of momentum. The dynamics of the bicycle and rider in a transverse plane are similar to that of a two link underactuated system where only the second link is actuated. A linear analysis of the bicycle is used to derive a control law for the rider to stabilize the bicycle about its upright position while the periodic motion of the steering axis drives the bicycle forward. After the bicycle attains a higher speed, it is easily stabilizable.

The rapid growth in population and related demand for travel during the past few decades has had a catalytic effect on traffic congestion, air quality, and safety in many urban areas. Transportation managers and planners have planned for new facilities to cater to the needs of users of alternative modes of transportation (e.g., public transportation, walking, and bicycling) over the next decade. However, there are no widely accepted methods, nor there is enough evidence to justify whether such plans are instrumental in improving mobility of the transportation system. Therefore, this project researches the operational performance of urban roads with heterogeneous traffic conditions to improve the mobility and reliability of people and goods. A 4-mile stretch of the Blue Line light rail transit (LRT) extension, which connects Old Concord Rd and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s main campus on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for travel time reliability analysis. The influence of crosswalks, sidewalks, trails, greenways, on-street bicycle lanes, bus/LRT routes and stops/stations, and street network characteristics on travel time reliability were comprehensively considered from a multimodal perspective. Likewise, a 2.5-mile-long section of the Blue Line LRT extension, which connects University City Blvd and Mallard Creek Church Rd on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for simulation-based operational analysis. Vissim traffic simulation software was used to compute and compare delay, queue length, and maximum queue length at nine intersections to evaluate the influence of vehicles, LRT, pedestrians, and bicyclists, individually and/or combined. The statistical significance of variations in travel time reliability were particularly less in the case of links on N Tryon St with the Blue Line LRT extension. However, a decrease in travel time reliability on some links was observed on the parallel route (I-85) and cross-streets. While a decrease in vehicle delay on northbound and southbound approaches of N Tryon St was observed in most cases after the LRT is in operation, the cross-streets of N Tryon St incurred a relatively higher increase in delay after the LRT is in operation. The current pedestrian and bicycling activity levels seemed insignificant to have an influence on vehicle delay at intersections. The methodological approaches from this research can be used to assess the performance of a transportation facility and identify remedial solutions from a multimodal perspective.
