Yu, Weidong. „Using author tri-citation analysis to map knowledge domains in knowledge representations“. Electronic Library 35, Nr. 6 (06.11.2017): 1215–24. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/el-11-2016-0240.

Annotation:
Purpose Previous commonly used author co-citation analysis (ACA) methods have limited the ability to deal with accidental co-citation in constructing a raw co-citation matrix. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to propose a new method, called author tri-citation analysis (ATA), to better map knowledge domains and depict scientific intellectual structures. Design/methodology/approach Different from the previous method of using ACA that captures author co-citation relationships, the ATA method seeks tri-citation relationships among authors. Compared with ACA, ATA can ignore some accidental co-citation relationships between authors and can improve the accuracy of mapping knowledge domains. Findings Although ATA does not mine more sub-fields than ACA does, the results of the empirical studies show that ATA, the newly proposed method, performs better in knowledge domain maps based on publications in the field of computer science. Research limitations/implications The definition of ATA in this article is simple and still insufficiently informative. Many other pieces of information can be involved; for example, all authors’ information, authors’ sequence in the author list, reference published time and similar. These can be enhanced in future studies. Practical implications This research will enrich the methods of mapping knowledge domains due to its new perspective. Social implications Knowledge domain mapping is important to understand a discipline, and this research provides more potential methods for this, which benefits the performance of the maps. Originality/value ATA can provide a methodological awareness for mapping knowledge domains. This value lies in not only a tri-citation perspective, but also author bibliographic tripling and author tri-operation perspectives (“tri-” perspectives).

Annotation:
The classification of living things depends upon the literature. Access to this literature is essential to taxonomic research and to our understanding of biodiversity. There have been tremendous efforts to digitise the world’s biodiversity literature; the Biodiveristy Heritage Library (BHL) alone has uploaded over 54 million pages, all of which is freely accessible online. Our scientific literature is far more accessible than it has ever been, but that does not mean it is easily discoverable. Much of the taxonomic literature online remains outside the linked network of scholarly research. But that is rapidly changing. Taxonomic aggregators are an invaluable source of authoritative information on species names and their hierarchical classification. It is critical that this information includes citations for taxonomic descriptions, that these citations link to the published literature online and that (wherever possible) the citations include DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers). The DOI is an essential part of a publication’s bibliographic metadata and should be included (as a live link) in any reference to that content. However, the definitive (DOI’d) versions of recent publications are frequently behind paywalls. And, while much of the historic literature available online is open access, commercial publishers are uploading out-of-copyright publications onto their own websites, assigning DOIs to “their” definitive versions (the versions that must be cited in other publications, as per DOI requirements) and then locking the defintiive versions behind paywalls. This is perfectly within their rights. DOIs may be assigned to legacy publications retrospectively, providing that: a) the party assigning them owns the rights for the content, or has permission from the rights holder to assign a DOI, and b) the publication does not already have a DOI. If there are no rights attached to a piece of content, anyone can assign a DOI to it. This means that citation traffic from the bibliographies of current publications is increasingly directed towards commercial publishers’ websites, rather than towards open access versions, such as those freely available on the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). However, taxonomic aggregators are not bound by the same obligations as publishers and may therefore choose to link to any online version of a publication (although the DOI should still be included in the citation). Many taxonomic aggregators link to the literature available on BHL. The taxonomic name profiles in EOL (Encyclopedia of Life), GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) and ALA (Atlas of Living Australia) each contain a BHL bibliography: a list of links to the pages in BHL that contain an identified mention of that taxon name. However, the lists of returned results can be long, and they may or may not include the citations for accepted names, synonyms and taxon concepts. Some biodiversity aggregators feature these key citations on the names pages (or tabs) of taxon profiles. However, where these do exist, they are usually plain text rather than links. BHL is now registering DOIs for the content it hosts and is creating landing pages for articles, containing the full bibliographic metadata, including (where applicable) the DOI. Articles are now discoverable by article title, keywords within titles (scientific names, locations, traits, etc.), author names and DOIs, and can be easily linked to (via their landing pages) by other parties. This paper will examine the issues, benefits and complexities associated with linking to definitive versions, the difference between easy and open access, the ethics of putting out-of-copyright content behind paywalls, and the future of creating order amongst the massively expanding resource of literature online.

The renewal of interest in Albert Magnus’ works which has taken place in the last one hundred years or so has in fact produced a multilingual body of studies whose size and diversity are making it more and more difficult for the scholar to identify and to know precisely and with certainty what has been written about this very important philosopher. The partial bibliographies which have been published throughout the 20th century were of some use, but none can compare, in terms of completeness, to the new, selectively annotated bibliography composed by I. M. Resnick and K. F. Kitchell. After briefly analyzing this impressive piece of scholarship and identifying some of the mistakes it inevitably contains, the present paper provides a list of approximately 350 items which are missing from Resnick and Kitchell’s bibliography and which for the most part were written before 2001.

The written Work of Horacio Quiroga (1878-1937) includes novels, poetry, dramaturgy, journalistic texts, and, fundamentally, stories, and was published first and foremost in the various illustrated magazines of the early twentieth century where the Uruguayan author collaborated. Only a part was collected in books by Quiroga himself. Since 1955 an accurate list of all his collaborations has been made and, also, a large part of his work has been published in various anthologies and in different complete works projects. Our research adds to this repertoire some bibliographic findings: the existence of two short stories, not belonging to any bibliographic list or to any compilation of their narrative writings; “Una carta de amor” and “La cacería”; the appearance of his first journalistic film “note”, “El Teatro Mudo: elogio del cinematógrafo”, which is not part of any list or of the compilations of Quiroga’s cinematographic texts; and, finally, the existence of the editio princeps of Cuentos de la Selva, one of his best known books. The three texts found, which are from 1917, as well as the illustrated editio princeps of Cuentos de la Selva from 1918 must be included in Horacio Quiroga’s bibliographic repertoire and must form part of the new editions of his complete work.

This paper proposes a method of comparative analysis of scientific trajectories based on bibliographic profiles. The bibliographic profile (“meshprint”) is a list of MeSH terms (key terms used to index articles in the PubMed), indicating the relative frequency of occurrence of each term in the scientist's articles. Comparison of personalized bibliographic profiles can be represented in the form of a semantic network, where the nodes are the names of scientists, and the relationships are proportional to the calculated measures of similarity of bibliographic profiles. The proposed method was used to analyze the semantic network of scientists united by the academic school of the academician A.I. Archakov. The results of the work allowed us to show the relationship between the scientific trajectories of one scientific school and to correlate the results with world trends.

Abstract Research on medieval European astrolabes has hitherto been somewhat haphazard. Most pieces are unsigned and undated, many difficult to assign to a specific region. Some early ones cannot be understood without reference to the Islamic tradition from which they derive. What are perhaps the most important pieces from a historical point of view—the earliest-known astrolabe, from 10th-century Catalonia, and the astrolabe made by the leading astronomer of 15th-century Europe, Regiomontanus,—were declared fakes or suspicious before they could be studied seriously. A detailed study of groups of related instruments, for example, those with Hebrew inscriptions, is a most welcome contribution. A survey of the clearly-identifiable astrolabes made in medieval England (or France or Italy) has never been undertaken; maybe this list might encourage somebody willing to learn the language of instruments to undertake such a task.

In Chile, dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic oral diseases along with gingival, periodontal diseases and dentomaxillary anomalies. Chronic diseases represent the bulk of Chile’s health burden. These diseases are associated with habits that are usually acquired early in childhood or adolescence and that are also associated with a complex and multiple network of determinants. The social determinants of health are defined as the social conditions in which people live and they work, and they influence positively or negatively on health. Social determinants intervene markedly in oral health, where people with fewer resources and lower educational level have more pathologies and less access to treatments. The empirical evidence analyzed provides useful information to consider that the Social Determinants of Health have a great influence on the health of the individuals, however, there are few investigations that directly relate the loss of dental pieces with these determinants. The objective of this article is to review the association between tooth loss and the social determinants of health.

Currently, transition to the electronic presentation of bibliographic information about scientific works has caused an increased interest in scientometric research. At the same time, the existing sci-entometric methods are criticized by scientists, since the incomplete bibliographic base and tools for its assessment do not allow the most accurate assessment of the contribution of scientific work. The problem of the quality of scientometric assessments, as a rule, is based on the study of the data of a certain citation system, which does not include complete information about all publications of the authors contained in other citation systems. Aim. This study is aimed at developing an adaptive ap-proach for the formation of aggregated data of bibliographic information of a scientific organiza-tion in conditions of incomplete information from the citation systems of the RSCI, “Google Aca-demy” and Scopus. Methods. The definition of the aggregated list of publications for the analysis of scientometric indicators was carried out by the Winnowing method, the Levenshtein algorithm, the shingle method and the Jaro–Winkler method. In the framework of the experimental study, the effectiveness of the application of the considered methods for aggregating information from cita-tion systems was assessed based on the analysis of accuracy, completeness and F-measure. Results. Expe¬riments on test data from the list of publications by authors of the Orenburg State University from the citation systems RSCI, Google Academy and Scopus showed that the Winnowing method formed the most accurate lists of publications by the F-measure criterion. To improve the perfor-mance of this algorithm, a two-stage optimization of the aggregation process was carried out, which made it possible to improve the running time of the algorithm when generating a list of bibliographic descriptions. Conclusion. The proposed approach for the formation of aggregated data of biblio-graphic information of a scientific organization in conditions of incomplete information from the ci-tation systems of the Russian Science Citation Index, Google Academy and Scopus allows increas-ing productivity in the formation of a list of authors' publications and shows good efficiency in de-termining the scientometric characteristics of authors.

Since the most recent monograph on Tardigrada by Ramazzotti & Maucci (1983), many changes have been introduced in the systematics of this phylum which has gone through different revisions and has been expanded by several new taxa. Moreover, the number of species is considerably increased (almost doubled to more than 960 species) and new families and genera have been created, while many taxa have been amended. The difficulty in finding a complete, updated list of taxa and the problems with putting together all the newly proposed taxonomic criteria, led us to compile an updated list of tardigrade taxa. This list is supplemented by a series of bibliographic references inherent in the synonymies and/or the amended diagnosis of the taxa occurred after 1983, and a list of the main characters used in the diagnosis of the species. These lists are aimed at helping not only the specialists studying this group, but also researchers interested in biodiversity and those who have to refer to this animal group.

On 1 September 1887, the Musical Times printed a list of pieces published during the previous month by Novello, Ewer and Co. As Novello's house journal, with a wide circulation across Britain, the Musical Times regularly listed new publications in the knowledge that such advertisements would reach a large and enthusiastic readership. In this particular issue, one of the pieces advertised was an anthem titled Hear my cry O God, composed by Dr C.G. Verrinder (see Fig. 1, highlighted). To anyone unfamiliar with Verrinder, his name blends in with the other composers on the list – one of the now largely forgotten majority of Victorian composers trying to make a living through writing sacred works or parlour music. The most renowned figure here is probably Ignaz Moscheles (listed here as ‘J. Moscheles’), whose work Domestic Life featured posthumously in one of Novello's collections of piano pieces; another name of note is that of Rosalind F. Ellicott, one of the era's more prominent female composers and particularly striking here among so many men.

All the current methods of accessing Internet resources fall short when it comes to locating discrete pieces of information and digital objects. One solution to this problem is to create analytical indexes to the Internet. This article explores the need for analytical indexes by looking at current Internet access, traditional bibliographic control, and Web site design. A discussion of some of the issues and problems concerning the development of these indexes, including the design and the resource selection process, emphasizes the impossibility of a comprehensive analytical index to the Internet. The creation of small, focused indexes may be the best solution for accessing specific types of digital information.

The development of information and computer technologies has led to the need to evolve the concept of universal bibliographic control. The creation of the Internet and web technologies has allowed this concept to reach a new level by creating a number of common international standards. In addition, to ensure control and exchange of bibliographic information public bibliographic and scientometric databases were created. Today, software for managing bibliographic records is in demand in various countries in Europe and America. The most popular software in these countries is EndNote, RefWorks, BibTeX and Zotero. The development of such automated bibliographic system and the adaptation of its functionality to standards and requirements within Ukraine is relevant for a number of reasons. The main reasons are the need for every scientist and lecturer of higher education institutions to confirm their scientific achievements when hiring, submitting scientific work to various competitions, to obtain a scientific degree and so on. Today the rapid development of information and computer technology allows us to abandon the list of scientific papers in manual mode and move to the use of specialized software on smartphones. That is why the architecture of an automated bibliographic system, which is developed as a mobile application based on the Android operating system, was designed. Java is chosen as the programming language in which the software will be written, as the vast majority of the Android operating system is written in this language. A number of technologies were chosen for the selected operating system. They will simplify the process of developing a mobile application. The three-layer architecture of the automated bibliographic system is designed on the basis of the multilevel model of architecture and the MVVM template. This architecture allows to provide the main non-functional characteristics of the quality of the developed software, as well as to effectively implement the rules of business logic within the object-oriented programming paradigm.

In the winter of 1704–5 Henry Playford advertised ‘a Choice Collection of Vocal and Instrumental Musick in Italian, French, and English’ owned by Gottfried Finger and partly collected by him ‘in his Travels to Italy’. Finger had evidently sold the collection to Johann Gottfried Keller and John Banister junior prior to his abrupt departure from England in 1701 after coming last in the competition to set Congreve's masque The Judgement of Paris. The discovery of a copy of the printed catalogue throws light on Finger's collecting activities in Italy and on the reception of Italian music in England. It also includes a list of ‘Mr. Finger's Great Pieces for his Consort in York-Buildings’, providing us with valuable new information about his concert activities in London in the 1690s, and about the size and composition of groups performing at York Buildings, London's first purpose-built concert hall. The list includes many pieces richly scored with brass, woodwind and strings, evidently performed with sizeable forces: most of the sets of parts are said to have been ‘Prick’d 3 times over’. It adds a number of new pieces to the catalogue of Finger's known compositions, and enables us to attribute to him an anonymous sonata for four recorders and continuo that was published in the twentieth century as by James Paisible.

Abstract Objective – This paper analyzes the design process for a toolkit for appraising emerging and established bibliographic reference generators and managers for a particular student population. Others looking to adapt or draw from the toolkit to meet the needs of users at their own institutions will benefit from this exploration of how one team developed and streamlined the process of assessment. Methods – The authors implemented an extensive initial evaluation using a checklist and comprehensive rubric to review and select reference tools. This work was guided by a matrix of categories from Marino (2012), Bates (2015), and other literature. As the tools were assessed using the toolkit, the components of the toolkit were evaluated and revised. Toolkit revisions were based on evaluators’ feedback and lessons learned during the testing process. Results – Fifty-three tools were screened using a checklist that reviewed features, including cost and referencing styles. Eighteen tools were thoroughly evaluated using the comprehensive rubric by multiple researchers to minimize bias. From this secondary testing, tools were recommended for use within this environment. Ultimately the process of creating an assessment toolkit allowed the researchers to develop a streamlined process for further testing. The toolkit includes a checklist to reduce the list of potential tools, a rubric for features, a rubric to evaluate qualitative criteria, and an instrument for scoring. Conclusion – User needs and the campus environment are critical considerations for the selection of reference tools. For this project, researchers developed a comprehensive rubric and testing procedure to ensure consistency and validity of data. The streamlined process in turn enabled library staff to provide evidence based recommendations for the most suitable manager or generator to meet the needs of individual programs.

The author shows the evolution of this activity carried out by specialists of various departments of the RSL, and using reference to specific scientific articles on the theory of bibliography explains the importance of scientific bibliographic description of collections for creation of retrospective national bibliography. The author analyses and systematizes several dozen works related to the scientific bibliographic description of the Russian literature abroad in the RSL. This part of Rossika in the Library is mainly a single array. The work on its scientific bibliographic description is carried out in the traditional (printed) form, in modern (electronic) form, responding to contemporary trends, as well as in parallel in both forms. The article presents the consolidated list of local databases (DB) of Russian literature abroad, created in the RSL. Two main types of DB are distinguished: 1) Established on the basis of the collections of Russian literature abroad and intended mainly for their disclosure. The names of these resources fully reflect their essence: “Photographs in the Collection...”, “Publications with the owner’s marks from the Collections...”, “Displaced cultural values in the Collection...”; 2) Consolidated databases based on the collections of Russian literature abroad and a number of other sources. It is reflected and even underlined in the title, for example: “Consolidated catalogue of periodicals and continuing editions of Russian abroad in Moscow libraries”.The author collected and analysed scientific articles of the RSL researchers, revealing the history of these databases, the principles of their construction, the goals, objectives, opportunities and prospects. The article presents correlation between the database and traditional bibliographic indexes of Russian literature abroad in the RSL, as well as lists the cases when the DB is based on the index or, conversely, database serves as the basis for it.
