Abstract. With TikTok emerging as one of the most popular social media platforms, there is significant potential for science communicators to capitalize on this success and to share their science with a broad, engaged audience. While videos of chemistry and physics experiments are prominent among educational science content on TikTok, videos related to the geosciences are comparatively lacking, as is an analysis of what types of geoscience videos perform well on TikTok. To increase the visibility of the geosciences and geophysics on TikTok and to determine best strategies for geoscience communication on the app, we created a TikTok account called “Terra Explore” (@TerraExplore). The Terra Explore account is a joint effort between science communication specialists at UNAVCO, IRIS (Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology), and OpenTopography. We produced 48 educational geoscience videos over a 4-month period between October 2021 and February 2022. We evaluated the performance of each video based on its reach, engagement, and average view duration to determine the qualities of a successful video. Our video topics primarily focused on seismology, earthquakes, topography, lidar (light detection and ranging), and GPS (Global Positioning System), in alignment with our organizational missions. Over this time period, our videos garnered over 2 million total views, and our account gained over 12 000 followers. The videos that received the most views received nearly all (∼ 97 %) of their views from the For You page, TikTok's algorithmic recommendation feed. We found that short videos (< 30 s) had a high average view duration, but longer videos (> 60 s) had the highest engagement rates. Lecture-style videos that were approximately 60 s in length had more success in both reach and engagement. Our videos that received the highest number of views featured content that was related to a recent newsworthy event (e.g., an earthquake) or that explained location-based geology of a recognizable area. Our results highlight the algorithm-driven nature of TikTok, which results in a low barrier to entry and success for new science communication creators.

This case study aimed to investigate the use of the social media video application, TikTok, to support ten EFL teachers in Indonesia to develop videos for storytelling with their students. During the emergency remote teaching, these teachers found difficulty in designing learning materials easy to share on various online platforms. In this study, a two-week training program consisting of face-to-face and online sessions was conducted to facilitate the teachers to explore TikTok affordances and tell stories in the form of TikTok’s Duet. The data were collected from TikTok videos produced during the program and the teachers’ pre- and post-training reflective notes. The findings show the teachers’ shifted view of TikTok as non-educational entertainment to an educational platform that could facilitate interactive and interesting storytelling with students. The teachers were aware that while the short duration of the TikTok video was beneficial for easy sharing and engagement with students, it affected the length of the unfolding stages of the story. In creating a TikTok video for storytelling, the teachers found modifying original stories into a one-minute interactive video challenging. More support is thus required to provide teachers with pedagogical, technological, and language content knowledge that allows them to develop teaching resources relevant to their student’s language learning needs and social and economic backgrounds.

Chinese public hospitals have increased usage of TikTok to communicate with citizens on health-related matters. This study aims to investigate the engagement of citizens with the official TikTok accounts of public hospitals, and identify the major characters of the videos with the highest public engagement level, as well as underlying factors that make them successful. A comprehensive search on TikTok, a video-sharing social networking service, was completed to identify all official accounts of public hospitals in Mainland China. Data was collected from 40 public hospitals with the top 100 TikTok videos being identified for content analysis. The majority of them were created by public hospitals located in the Central and Western regions of China. The common features of the top 100 identified videos include: low message sensation value and short video length, and are typically accompanied by background music, subtitles, and an introduction at the beginning of the video. The most frequently viewed video type is film clips which are used to disseminate knowledge of diseases and promote healthcare professionals. Health communication via the official TikTok accounts of public hospitals in China offers significant potential. Hospitals are encouraged to engage citizens in health-related conversations to build their credibility and professional image online. Among the popular short-videos, the message sensation value is not largely connected to video popularity, while the content of videos seems more important. This requires skills in video creation or procurement, and editing, while rhetoric should be cautiously applied. The content of videos should provide education and positive energy.

Under the background of globalization, diversified narrative approaches have been increasingly adopted in international news reports in the context of new media, leading to varying degrees of influence on the audiences opinion. In virtue of their fast-paced, penetrative and fragmented contents, short video communication platforms, represented by TikTok, cater to peoples reading needs in the rush of modern life. They are also found to differ from traditional media in the reporting and dissemination of major news events. On July 8, 2022, Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan and a current member of the House of Representatives, was shot and killed during his street speech in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. After the incident, many relevant news reports and short videos emerged on the platform of TikTok, with different emotional attitudes highly perceivable from users comments. Based on the Theory of News Narratology, this article collects and encodes first-hand data from 100 short videos with the largest number of likes after July 8 and 9 on the short video platform of TikTok, such as video length, release time, video presentation mode, narrative approach and music style, and explores the impact of different narrative approaches and elements in international news reports on the attitude and behavioral orientation of Internet users using the method of content analysis. The results of comparative analysis show that the audiences comment tone is relatively flat under the sad style of music and the short news videos with low timeliness; the narrative approach of incorporating subjective comments and human participation into short videos is conducive to the rational return of public opinion.

Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, growth in citizen engagement with social media platforms has enabled public health departments to accelerate and improve health information dissemination, developing transparency and trust between governments and citizens. In light of these benefits, it is imperative to learn the antecedents and underlying mechanisms for this to maintain and enhance engagement. Objective The aim of this study is to determine the factors and influencing mechanisms related to citizen engagement with the TikTok account of the National Health Commission of China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Using a web crawler, 355 short videos were collected from the Healthy China account on TikTok (with more than 3 million followers throughout China), covering the period from January 21, 2020, to April 25, 2020. The title and video length, as well as the number of likes, shares, and comments were collected for each video. After classifying them using content analysis, a series of negative binomial regression analyses were completed. Results Among the 355 videos, 154 (43.4%) related to guidance for clinicians, patients, and ordinary citizens, followed by information concerning the government’s handling of the pandemic (n=100, 28.2%), the latest news about COVID-19 (n=61, 17.2%), and appreciation toward frontline emergency services (n=40, 11.3%). Video length, titles, dialogic loop, and content type all influenced the level of citizen engagement. Specifically, video length was negatively associated with the number of likes (incidence rate ratio [IRR]=0.19, P<.001) and comments (IRR=0.39, P<.001). Title length was positively related to the number of shares (IRR=24.25, P=.01), likes (IRR=8.50, P=.03), and comments (IRR=7.85, P=.02). Dialogic loop negatively predicted the number of shares (IRR=0.56, P=.03). In comparison to appreciative information, information about the government’s handling of the situation (IRR=5.16, P<.001) and guidelines information (IRR=7.31, P<.001) were positively correlated with the number of shares, while the latest news was negatively related to the number of likes received (IRR=0.46, P=.004). More importantly, the relationship between predictors and citizen engagement was moderated by the emotional valence of video titles. Longer videos with positive titles received a higher number of likes (IRR=21.72, P=.04) and comments (IRR=10.14, P=.047). Furthermore, for short videos related to government handling of the pandemic (IRR=14.48, P=.04) and guidance for stakeholders (IRR=7.59, P=.04), positive titles received a greater number of shares. Videos related to the latest news (IRR=66.69, P=.04) received more likes if the video title displayed higher levels of positive emotion. Conclusions During the COVID-19 pandemic, videos were frequently published on government social media platforms. Video length, title, dialogic loop, and content type significantly influenced the level of citizen engagement. These relationships were moderated by the emotional valence of the video’s title. Our findings have implications for maintaining and enhancing citizen engagement via government social media.

Conventional humor analysis normally focuses on text, text-image pair, and even long video (e.g., monologue) scenarios. However, with the recent rise of short-form video sharing, humor detection in this scenario has not yet gained much exploration. To the best of our knowledge, there are two primary issues associated with short-form video humor detection (SVHD): 1) At present, there are no ready-made humor annotation samples in this scenario, and it takes a lot of manpower and material resources to obtain a large number of annotation samples; 2) Unlike the more typical audio and visual modalities, the titles (as opposed to simultaneous transcription in the lengthy film) and associated interactive comments in short-form videos may convey apparent humorous clues. Therefore, in this paper, we first collect and annotate a video dataset from DouYin (aka. TikTok in the world), namely DY24h, with hierarchical comments. Then, we also design a novel approach with comment-aided multi-modal heterogeneous pre-training (CMHP) to introduce comment modality in SVHD. Extensive experiments and analysis demonstrate that our CMHP beats several existing video-based approaches on DY24h, and that the comments modality further aids a better comprehension of humor. Our dataset, code and pre-trained models are available at https://github.com/yliu-cs/CMHP.

For researchers used to technical communication, writing lay-level articles requires a commitment to learning a different way of writing. This new approach includes becoming a storyteller, not an “authority,” and understanding the editorial process. This process includes how to market articles, how to pitch editors, and how to cope with editing. Op-eds can be highly useful as outlets for researchers, but they have specific length, content, and marketing requirements that must be observed. Feature articles also have particular requirements in terms of understanding the needs of readers, and being organized to grab and hold them. Lay-level articles can best engage readers by using the writing techniques of fiction. Effective lay-level writing also means “murdering your children”—being willing to ruthlessly edit out content that loses the reader. Authors can also make their articles more engaging by providing artwork, animations, video, and audio.

Visual telerehabilitation is crucial to rise to the challenges of Covid-19 in order to advocate impaired individuals’ adaptation and social inclusion. The present research aims at detecting the predictors of the visual telerehabilitation protocol’s best outcome, also exploring variables’ interactions. The protocol by Chiossone Institute (Italy, Genoa) was administered in 2020 (March-May). Patients weekly video-called the orthoptists (by tablet or PC) to follow a personalized program on residual vision and diagnosis. The sample included seventy-five visually impaired individuals, across different age ranges (n=46 children and n=29 adults), who had all begun in person rehabilitation before pandemic. To detect the predictors of visual telerehabilitation effectiveness, orthoptists completed a self-report sheet with evaluation of the reaction time, participants socio-demographical data, diagnosis, residual vision, telematic session time-length, compliance level. Descriptive, linear regression, and moderation analyses were implemented. Children’s reaction time was predicted by age, sessions’ time-length, and compliance. Adults’ reaction time was predicted by sessions’ time length, without significant moderators. These findings encourage the combination of traditional setting elements and technological innovation.

In co-robotics applications, the robots must be capable of taking inputs from human partners in different forms, including both static and sequential hand gestures, in dynamic interactions for enhanced effectiveness as socially assistive agents. This paper presents the development of a gesture recognition algorithm for control of robots. The algorithm focuses on the detection of skin colors using monocular vision of a moving robot base where the inherent instability negates the effectiveness of methods like background subtraction. The algorithm is implemented in the open-source, open-access robotics software framework of Robot Operating System (ROS). The video feed from the camera is converted into several color spaces, including RGB and YCbCr. Pixels observed in the raw video feed as skin are randomly selected and their properties in each of the color spaces are recorded. A cylinder of infinite length is constructed out of the best fit line for both color spaces, and all points lying within both cylinders are accepted as a skin tone. The gesture recognition features are extracted from the filtered image and can be used for planning the motion of the robot. The procedure is illustrated using the on-board camera on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

This paper shows randomness effects of loading amplitude and mean value of displacement-controlled loading history for perforated plates made of SUS304 stainless steel at elevated temperature of 550°C. Under the random wave of strain amplitude, the fracture behavior at elevated temperature environment is clarified by measuring the load-deflection curve at all cycles. The data of experiments were evaluated by Miner’s rule, which has been established as an evaluation method for load variation problem. Number of cycles to fracture is compared to show the good agreement with the Best Fit Fatigue curve (BFF). Peak count method also was used in calculating frequency of the strain in order to evaluate Miner’s rule, and the local strain concentration is calculated based on Stress Redistribution Locus (SRL) method. The other object of this study is to evaluate effect of mean value of strain in loading diagram on fatigue life. The mean strain were used for the cases of R = −0.0, −0.2, −0.4, −0.8 and −1.0. The crack length is measured by using photographs with the CCD video camera at a constant frequency. From the measurement, it is found that the number of cycles to failure is reduced when the absolute of value of mean strain is decreased. And cracks develop at both sides around the hole, but the growth of each crack may not be symmetric. By using these inelastic strain amplitude and crack initiation cycle, the experimented results are shown at the present study.

Attention has been given to enhance boiling surfaces in order to decrease the temperature difference and to increase heat transfer coefficient. Structured surfaces may provide both surface enlargement and artificial nucleation sites, thus ameliorate the heat transfer coefficient. The goal of the present experimental work is to analyze the influence on heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of enhanced surface structures coated on mini channel heat exchanger working in a closed loop thermosyphon system. Experimental tests were carried out with three types of surface enhanced mini channel evaporators: smooth surface, threaded structure and nanoporous coating. The evaporators are single channel half circularly shaped, adapted for filming purpose, measuring 30mm in length and 3mm in diameter. Surface areas of channels are 1.41cm2. Experiments were conducted in refrigerant 134a at 4.87bar (reduced pressure pr = 0.12) and at heat fluxes ranging from 0.7W/cm2 to 63.8W/cm2. A high speed video camera was used for visualization of the two-phase flow in the evaporator channel. It is shown that threaded surface provides the highest heat transfer coefficient (HTC) from no load to heat flux of 7.1W/cm2, the nanoporous structure shows the highest performance between 7.1W/cm2 and 49.6W/cm2, and the smooth surface channel exhibits the best HTC from 49.6W/cm2 and higher. In this paper, the influences of heat flux and surface structures on HTC are discussed, and the impact of refrigerant flow regimes on heat transfer performance is also highlighted.

Abstract Fracture treatments and stage designs for new wells have evolved considerably over the past decade contributingto significant production growth. For example, in the acreage discussed hererecently used higher intensity fracturing methods provided an ~80% increase in recovery rates compared with legacy wells. Older wells completed originally with less efficient techniques can also benefit from these more up-to-date designs and treatments using re-fracturing methods. These offer the prospect of economically boosting production in appropriately selected wells. While adding in-fill wells has often been favored by Operators as a lowerrisk option the number of wells being re-fractured has grown every year for the last decade. In this case study two adjacent Eagle Ford wells, comprising a newly completed and a re-fractured well, allow both methods to be considered and compared. Completion design and fracture treatment effectiveness are evaluated using the uniformity of proppant distribution at cluster and stage level as the primary measure. Perforation erosion measurements from downhole video footage is used as the main diagnostic. Novel data acquisition methods combined with successful well preparation provided comprehensive and high-quality datasets. The subsequent proppant distribution analysis for the two wells provides the highest confidence results presented to date. Clear, repeatable trends in distribution are observed and these are compared across multiple stage designs for both the newly completed and re-fractured well. Variations in design parameters and how these effects distribution and ultimately recovery are discussed. These include changes to perforation count per cluster, cluster spacing, cluster count per stage, stage length, perforation charge size and treatment rates and volumes. As a final consideration production records for the evaluated wells are also discussed. Historical industry data shows that the number of wells being re-fractured increases relative to the number of newly drilled wells being completed during periods of low oil and gas prices. With the industry again facing harsh economic realities an increasing number of decisions will be made on whether new or refractured wells, or a combination of both, provide the best solution to replace otherwise inevitable production decline. This paper attempts to provide a detailed understanding of how proppant distribution, as a significant factor in production for hydraulically fractured wells, can be evaluated and considered in these decisions.

This paper is the result of the work developed under the PATRAC Project (Accessible Heritage: R&D+innovation for a culture without obstacles) for the development a software tool capable of solving optimal routes in urban areas, considering parameters for the evaluation of its physical accessibility such as slope, narrow passages, low height clearance and insufficient lighting. The development of this tool is a methodological innovation on the creation and rectification of data sources since it generates information from a Laser Terrestrial Scanner (LTS) point cloud output, corrected using advanced Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technologies. This cartographical information, corresponding to the city of Tossa de Mar old town, is the reference used by the GIS optimal route solver which allows the user to find the best route between two points of interest in the old town. The development of the solver has required an initial analysis of the accessibility status of the study area followed by programming tasks to integrate the acceptable values of slope, width, height and lighting, among others, into the optimal route solver parameters so they are evaluated when performing its optimization tasks. The end result is a web application that allows the user to find the optimal route between any two points of interest considering his or her disability. In addition to the graphical information of the optimal route plan, the application shows the user the length of the route and displays a 3D video following the route path, created from the 3D model generated from the Laser Terrestrial Scanner.

A fish cage should be submerged to reduce hydrodynamic forces from high waves if the fish cage is installed in an exposed sea area. Usually, the submergible fish cage is suspended from the framework at a fixed depth. The framework is set by floats and anchors at the middle position between water surface and the top surface of the submergible fish cage. The submergible fish cage will be used not only for reduction of hydrodynamic forces but for the other purposes such as choosing the best environment for cultured fishes in the vertical direction, and escaping from the flood with high-level nitrogen or turbidity, harmful algal blooming, and floating ices. In such cases, it is useful for the fish cage to be installed in variable depths. The purpose of the present study is to examine the safety of the fish cage installed in variable depths in current and waves by means of tank model testing. The mooring system consists of a fish cage and four floats. The vertical position of the fish cage is variable by adjusting the buoyancy of these floats. First, the drag of the fish cage was examined by towing test, and the results were compared with the drag estimated by the existing studies. The effects of interaction among twines, the angle of attack, wake, and the top and bottom nets were discussed. Then the fish cage was moored in the water tank, which has the length of 50 m and the width of 10 m. The tank model has a scale of 1/100 of the full-scale model of the fish cage used for tuna farming. The model was made according to Tauti’s similarity law. The water depth was set at 0.68 m by adjusting the position of the variable floor. The motion of the fish cage and four floats, and the tension of the mooring lines between the fish cage, floats, and anchors were measured by the underwater video camera and load cells, respectively. As a result, the drag of the fish cage could be estimated from the experimental results of the drag of a plane net since the results include the effect of interaction among twines. The effects of the angle of attack and the reduction in water current velocity inside the cage were also taken into account. The drag of the fish cage could be estimated well by the above method, while it was underestimated by 10% in comparison with the experimental data. In the water tank testing of the mooring system, the tension of the mooring line increased rapidly with the increase in water current velocity since the drag of the fish cage was proportional to the 1.8th power of water current velocity and increased due to the inclination of the fish cage. The increase in the tension due to wave-induced forces to the fish cage could be negligible when the fish cage was submerged. The safety and the design guideline of the mooring system should be assessed by the simulations using a numerical model, which is being developed by the authors. The experimental data obtained in the present study will be useful for the validation of the numerical model.
