Barry Johnson made major contributions to the theory of Banach algebras, stimulating research on automatic continuity and cohomology in these algebras. His research on the continuous Hochschild cohomology of Banach and operator algebras led to major developments in these areas, and to ‘amenability’ moving from a group theoretic idea to one that is widely applicable in modern analysis.

Annotation:
This study examines the role of the Russian media in affecting public opinion in Russia regarding the Russian intervention in 2008. The largest armed conflict in Europe since Kosovo in 1999, the August 2008 war was fought between Georgia and Russia over the proclaimed independence of the Georgian separate governments of Abkhazia and South Ossetia which were supported by Russia. Russia intervened militarily and recognized the independence of the two separatist regions, supported by an overwhelming majority of the Russian population. This study analyzes the role of the Russian media in affecting the Russian public opinion regarding its government’s policies in relation to Georgia. The method used for study is discourse analysis, and the theoretical framework underlying the research is Barry Buzan’s (et al., 1998) concept of securitization and Edward Herman’s and Noam Chomsky’s (1988) concept of manufacturing consent which was later elaborated by Anthony DiMaggio (2009). The trends identified in the mainstream Russian media coverage may at least partly account for the positive opinion of the Russian public towards the intervention. The study also revealed the contrasting trends characterizing the mainstream and alternative Russian media coverage, thus once again confirming the crucial role of the media in establishing the different opinions among the public, by “building” contrasting images of the world.

The cemetery at Ackergill in Caithness has become the type site for Pictish platform cairns. A re-appraisal based on Society of Antiquaries of Scotland manuscripts, together with published sources, shows that, rather than comprising only the eight cairns and two long cists excavated by Edwards in the 1920s, the cemetery was more extensive. Close to Edward's site, Barry had already excavated two other circular cairns, three rectangular cairns and a long cist, and possibly another circular cairn was found between the two campaigns of excavation. Two of the cairns were re-used for subsequent burials and two cairns were unique in having corbelled chambers built at ground level. Other burial sites along the shore of Sinclair's Bay are also examined.

Is the ballooning federal budget deficit a serious economic problem? The papers in this symposium provide four perspectives on this issue. Robert Barro and Robert Eisner disagree sharply with the “majority” opinion concerning deficits. In contrast, Edward Gramlich and Douglas Bernheim are more sympathetic to the view that budget deficits lower national saving and thus contribute to a reduction in future living standards.

Abstract The clinical uses of anthracyclines (e.g., doxorubicin) are hampered especially by dose-dependent cardiac toxicity, resulting in a narrow therapeutic window. Doxorubicin formulations have marginally improved its therapeutic efficacy while suffering from difficult and costly manufacturing, poor characterization and quality control, limited scalability in production, and disappointingly low drug loading. This study employs DNA fragments extracted from the salmon sperm cells, which is known for high biocompatibility in various biomedical application, to self-assemble via intercalation by doxorubicin. DNA/DOX nanocomplexes are easy in manufacturing, high scalability, straightforward characterization and quantification, and efficiency in drug loading. Doxorubicin and DNA fragments were dissolved in water and mixed at the optimized 1:6 weight ratio, followed by stirring and incubation for 30 min. DNA/DOX nanocomplexes were characterized for doxorubicin loading and release, size, surface charge, and morphology by UV/fluorescence spectroscopy, stable isotope tracer ultrafiltration assay (SITUA), dynamic light scattering particle analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The anticancer efficacy of the DNA/DOX nanocomplexes were tested in vitro and in vivo using syngeneic and PDX tumor models. Along with PD/PK studies, DNA/DOX nanocomplexes were also evaluated for their systemic and cardiac toxicity. Characterization and quantification studies revealed DNA/DOX nanocomplexes to be relatively monodisperse with a size of 40 nm in diameter, efficient for drug encapsulation (~100%) and drug loading (14.3%, w/w), and stable for storage while readily releasing doxorubicin in a cell. The self-assembled nanocomplexes were formed when doxorubicin inter- and intra-molecularly chelated DNA fragments. DNA/DOX nanocomplexes were more efficient in killing cancer cells in vitro than both doxorubicin and the liposomal doxorubicin Doxil. PD/PK studies demonstrated that DNA/DOX nanocomplexes circulated longer with less accumulation in the heart than doxorubicin, which altogether lower toxicity. A repeated administration of the DNA/DOX nanocomplexes to Sprague-Dawley rats exhibited a substantially lower cardiotoxicity score than that of doxorubicin. The improved anti-tumor efficacy of the DNA/DOX nanocomplexes were finally confirmed using a syngeneic lymphoma mouse model and PDX mouse models of triple-negative breast and ovarian cancers. Complexing doxorubicin with DNA fragments addresses the current technological challenges in achieving an efficient and safe therapy for a broad range of cancers. DNA/DOX nanocomplexes are amenable to rigorous chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) evaluation with proven anti-cancer efficacy and improved safety profiles. Clinical trials on DNA/DOX nanocomplexes for cancer chemotherapy are warranted to fully validate their clinical utilities. THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD: An Evolution of Thinking from Darwin to Dewey by Henry M. Cowles. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2020. 384 pages. Hardcover; $35.00. ISBN: 9780674976191. *Despite its main title, this book is not an analysis of the scientific method as such, or its use by scientists, but rather it is a socio-cultural history of that method as an idea, as the subtitle indicates. Cowles begins the book with the eye-catching claim: "The scientific method does not exist. But 'the scientific method' does." By this he means that the scientific method, as portrayed in (high school) science textbooks, does not exist as a universal method employed by scientists in their quest for new knowledge. Rather, what does exist is a history of ideas: a set of philosophical ideas that transformed into notions about the mind and cognition, which ultimately ended up as a set of steps in introductory chapters in textbooks presented as a universal method. *Cowles combines exhaustive research with interesting storytelling to weave a fascinating narrative about the history of the idea of method. The second chapter, "Hypothesis Unbound," sets the stage for his narrative: although Thomas Carlyle, Charles Babbage, and John Herschel make cameo appearances here, Cowles's main thread is the public philosophical disagreement between William Whewell and John Stuart Mill on what constituted thinking. This prepares the ground for Cowles's main thread, which begins in earnest with the third chapter, "Nature's Method." Here he suggests that Charles Darwin's goal of presenting evolution meant paying close attention to methods of thinking--and this began the story of how a philosophical idea about method evolved into taking it as a natural form of cognition. *Chapter four, "Mental Evolution," highlights Alexander Bain and Herbert Spencer's thought, which takes the debates about method and evolution into the realm of social development, whereas chapter five, "A Living Science," chronicles the rise of pragmatism in the United States--with Charles Pierce and William James--and its use of method as a way to think about logic, psychology, and practical problem-solving. Chapter six, "Animal Intelligence," feels a bit like an interlude with its focus on the rise of behaviorism in psychology, featuring John Watson, Edward Thorndike, and B. F. Skinner. Cowles's history ends with two chapters entitled "Laboratory School" and "A Method Only," in which he narrates how John Dewey's book How We Think became the basis for embedding this naturalized model of thinking into textbooks as "the scientific method." The main threads of Cowles's narrative move from discussions around what sort of methodology might unite science generally to the way that psychology sought to read "method" as a way of understanding intelligence and cognition. *As a book of cultural history, The Scientific Method is a fascinating, detailed account of how "method" threaded its way through political, cultural, social, and academic discussions. Cowles's chapters are exhaustively researched, and are peppered with quotes and anecdotes. It is impressive scholarship, although perhaps dizzying at times, for it is sometimes difficult to keep track of the main theme in the myriad of detail that rushes at the reader. This also makes the book feel a bit unfocused--as a chapter develops its rich details of analysis and discovery, the main idea about accounting for "the scientific method" seems to get lost; at times, it is difficult to see the relevance of all the rich and interesting detail to the book's main point. *Further, although the book claims, in its first chapter, to show that there is no such thing as "the scientific method," it actually spends little to no time actually analyzing the legitimacy of "the method" itself or its possible use among scientists, either in the social or natural sciences. Do psychologists or sociologists use (something like) scientific methods? Do biologists, chemists, or physicists? Cowles's book says little about this. Although Cowles's introductory claim might lead a reader to think that they would find at least reference to philosophical analyses of the scientific method--such as Barry Gower's historical and philosophical book, Scientific Method (Routledge, 1997)--Cowles's book is not about the use of methods by actual scientists in the course of their research nor about a philosophical analysis of the philosophical debates and controversies around "the scientific method." This might have required substantive discussion--perhaps with their own chapters--about figures such as Galileo Galilei, Francis Bacon, and Isaac Newton, as well as more recent figures such as Rudolf Carnap, Karl Popper, and Hans Reichenbach; discussions around induction and truth would have figured more prominently as well. Although, at the start of the book, a reader might feel that the book is meant to be a complete history of this idea, in the end, it has a more limited claim--that is, how "the scientific method" ended up as a set of steps of inquiry in (high school) science textbooks. Cowles's book is an interesting history of this more limited claim, and those looking for a more conceptual or philosophical discussion around the merits of "the" scientific method, will have to look elsewhere. *Reviewed by Clarence W. Joldersma, Professor, Philosophy of Education, and Director, Master of Education Program, Calvin University, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.

Abstract Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common pediatric extracranial solid tumor, with a 5-year survival rate under 50% for those with high-risk disease. Complete surgical resection is essential for these patients and is associated with improved outcomes. However, NB resection presents significant technical challenges due to encasement of vital structures that must be preserved, as well as remote deposits of disease. The current approach to find and safely resect tumor depends on the surgeon’s eyes and hands alone. Fluorescence tracers allow enhanced tumor visualization, but most are not molecularly targeted which leads to poor tumor to background signal. Further, fluorescent signal does not penetrate more than a few millimeters, a limitation that can be overcome by inclusion of a radiotracer. We, therefore, generated and evaluated a dual radio and fluorescent antibody-based probe targeting the GD2 tumor antigen to improve the identification of NB with widely available intraoperative handheld instruments. We generated an intraoperative probe (111In-αGD2-IRDye800CW) with retained affinity and stability. In vivo- Nu/j mice were injected with SK-N-BE(2) NB cells. After tumors grew for five weeks, mice were given tail vein injections of the probe. Gamma and optical biodistribution studies were performed to determine the specificity of binding and tumor to background signal four- and six-days post probe injection. Probe uptake was compared to an isotype. Gross dissections and surgeries aimed at improving completeness of resection were performed using a handheld fluorescent camera (SPY-PHI) and a gamma probe (Neoprobe). The handheld gamma probe detected xenografts with great sensitivity (average in vivo 818 cps of In111 in tumor region versus 34.8 cps in the tail). The fluorescent imaging showed high specific binding to the tumor region. Gamma biodistribution results indicated high accumulation within tumor (13.5 %ID/g) with lower accumulation in blood (3.49 %ID/g) and muscle (0.45 %ID/g). Uptake of the probe greatly exceeded isotype control antibody on days 4 and 6 post-agent injection, for both gamma and optical biodistributions. Initial tumor resection using 111In-DTPA-aGD2-IRDye800CW in an NB bearing mouse identified residual disease left behind when resection was performed using white light alone; the residual disease was then removed, guided by fluorescence imaging. Our dual-labeled probe demonstrated antigen specificity and allowed for the sensitive detection and visualization of NB in vivo with widely available intraoperative tools. This targeted probe could provide a means to improve surgical NB resection, by enabling localization of the all regions of tumor using radio-guidance, followed by clear definition of tumor margins with fluorescent signal, to maximize preservation of vital tissues. Ultimately, we believe this approach can improve safety, extent of NB resection, and patient outcomes. Citation Format: ReidAnn E. Sever, Lauren Taylor Rosenblum, Kayla C. Stanley, Dominic M. Students of Elementary School Teacher Education programs must be able to have higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) so that they can train students to have HOTS through learning activities created when they have become elementary school teachers. This study aims to explain students' high-level thinking skills in solving HOTS-oriented questions in Instructional Evaluation courses. This study uses qualitative research methods with data collection techniques using cognitive test instruments in the form of descriptions. Data analysis techniques use simple descriptive statistics. The results showed the level of thinking ability of students in answering HOTS practice questions still needed improvement. Students who have high learning abilities are better at answering HOTS-oriented questions compared to students in the medium and low categories. Recommendations for future research are required learning modules that can facilitate learning activities that lead to HOTS so that students are skilled in answering and making HOTS-oriented practice questions for elementary school students when they become a teacher. Background:It is not well understood why hypertension (HTN) is so common in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Reported prevalence of HTN in RA patients ranges from 4-73%.(1)Objectives:This study explored the prevalence of HTN at time of RA diagnosis and which demographic, behavioural and clinical factors were associated with HTN.Methods:Data from the Canadian Early Arthritis Cohort (CATCH), a prospective inception cohort of patients with RA <1 year duration, were used to analyze baseline demographic, behavioural and clinical characteristics associated with HTN, which was reported by physicians. Univariate logistic regression models were created to explore associations with baseline HTN. A multivariate logistic regression model was built based on goodness of fit indicated by likelihood ratio tests. Variables included in the model were age, sex, race, body mass index (BMI), education, smoking, alcohol servings, seropositivity, disease activity and comorbidities. Results:In total, 2052 subjects were included with mean (±SD) age of 55 (±14) years and symptom duration 5.60(5.47, 5.73) months, 71% of subjects were female and 85% were Caucasian. HTN was reported in 26% of subjects at baseline. Hypertensive subjects were older and more likely to be male. Other factors significantly associated with HTN at baseline were lower education, ever smoking, high BMI, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, worse RA disease activity, longer duration of RA symptoms, being seropositive, as well as the use of NSAIDs and/or corticosteroids (Table 1). In multivariable analysis HTN was associated with older age, overweight and obese BMI, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Expression of anti-citrullinated protein antibodies was inversely associated with HTN (Table 1). Other RA disease factors and treatments were not significantly associated with HTN on multivariable analysis.Table 1.Results of univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses exploring the association between baseline characteristics and HTN in early RA.Univariate Logistic RegressionMultivariable Logistic RegressionVariableCrude OR (95% CI)Adjusted OR (95% CI)Socio-Demographic20-39 years old0.15 (0.07, 0.26)0.14(0.05, 0.34)40-59 years oldReference60-79 years old2.81 (2.26, 3.50)2.26(1.65, 3.11)80-99 years old5.87 (3.36,10.25)3.80(1.53, 9.41)Female0.55 (0.45, 0.68)1.10(0.78, 1.54)Lifestyle/BehaviouralNormal weight (18.5- 24.9kg/m2)ReferenceOverweight (25-29.9 kg/m2)2.33(1.74, 3.11)1.63(1.10, 2.43)Obese (30+ kg/m2)3.19(2.38, 4.27)2.84(1.91, 4.23Ever-smoking1.41(1.15, 1.73)1.02(0.75, 1.40)Post-secondary education0.58(0.47, 0.71)0.88(0.65, 1.20)Clinical CharacteristicsSymptom duration0.99(0.99, 0.99)1.00(1.00, 1.00)DAS-281.09(1.09, 1.17)1.02(0.92, 1.13)ACPA+0.68(0.56, 0.85)0.64(0.44, 0.92)Corticosteroid use pre-baseline1.37(1.04, 1.81)OmittedNSAID use at baseline0.68(0.55, 0.84)OmittedDiabetes5.62(4.09, 7.73)3.20(1.99, 5.15)Hyperlipidemia4.75(3.74, 6.03)2.80(1.94, 4.02),CVD15.59(3.35, 72.64)OmittedDAS-28; Disease activity score 28, ACPA; Anti-citrullinated protein antibody, CVD; Cardiovascular disease. Pre-baseline is 29 to 365 days before entering the cohort. Baseline is within 28 days before entering the cohort. Omitted variables either failed likelihood ratio test or were colinear. Additional variables tested but found insignificant: race, alcohol servings, depression, RF+, and use of DMARDs.Conclusion:Approximately 1 in 4 diagnosed with RA had HTN reported by their rheumatologists, which is similar to that of the general population. This suggests that increased risk of HTN in RA patients may develop as RA disease or treatment time progresses. Factors that may be predictive of this excess risk will be explored in further analysis.References:[1]Panoulas VF, Metsios GS, Pace AV, et al. Hypertension in rheumatoid arthritis.
