The aim of this thesis is to examine conflict management in the Barisan Nasional from 1974 to 1999. The core of the study focuses on the conflict management during the seat allocation process in elections and the allocation of cabinet posts at federal government level and state Exco level in Penang and Kedah. To elaborate on these two focal points, five main objectives aimed at uncovering the contributing factors to the Barisan Nasional's stability and solidarity to continue ruling a multiethnic society. A total of 28 political figures in the BN and two from opponent parties were identified as interviewees. Results of this study revealed that the Barisan Nasional employed its own, unique approach in handling conflicts. Firstly, Power-sharing shows that the Barisan Nasional applies a formula for seat allocation using three stringent processes to ensure that each of its components receives a fair allocation of seats commensurate with the performance and strength of the party. For the allocation of cabinet and Exco posts, each party is provided with the opportunity and position to hold the post, so that each component party would have an avenue of participation in the development of policies and direction of the national administration. Secondly, the principles practised within the Barisan Nasional, which includes decision-making procedures, the representativeness and confidentiality of discussions on seat allocation and Cabinet/Exco post allocation, are confined only to the main elite groups of the component parties. The involvement and knowledge of other party members, especially those at branch and divisional levels, are extremely limited and restricted in these areas. Thirdly, in the process of allocating seats and Cabinet/Exco posts, some bargaining inevitably takes place, usually by two parties, namely a component party of the Barisan Nasional and an NGO. There are four factors contributing to this bargaining. The scope of this bargaining also involves four areas. Fourthly, the management of conflict in seat and Cabinet/Exco post allocations demonstrates that the Barisan Nasional continuously faces various challenges from time to time. Seven different challenges are outlined, and these often pose as elements that threaten the strength and stability of the Barisan Nasional. The control of these elements is important in ensuring that the Barisan Nasional continues to be sound and stable, whilst failure would put the Barisan Nasional in a quagmire of difficulties in continuing to defend its power. Finally to manage the conflict on seat and Cabinet/Exco post allocations, the Barisan Nasional applies four levels of review. At each level, the conflict is assessed and analysed to ensure that if can be handled well and comprehensively to the satisfaction and justice of all parties involved. In addition, the Barisan Nasional also practises five approaches in managing these conflicts. The study findings provide a comprehensive documentation of the techniques applied by the BN in managing conflicts, and it is hoped that it would describe to the public how each party played its role in maintaining political stability whilst serving as guidelines to countries facing interethnic conflict.

Willcox, Douglas R. „Metadrama and Antitheatricality in Shakespeare’s King Lear and Troilus and Cressida“. Scholar Commons, 2008. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/565.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Shakespeare uses metadrama as a rhetorical vehicle for responding to antitheatricalism; realistic drama and staged theatricality therefore coexist in his plays. The cultural context of the early modern era, especially its antitheatrical rhetoric and the predominance of theatricality throughout the structures of its society, illumines the interaction of metadrama and antitheatricality Shakespeare's plays, particularly Troilus and Cressida and King Lear. By failing to consider adequately the unique nature of the emergence of early modern theater and the equally distinct reaction to its popularity, previous scholarship considering antitheatricality has exhibited essentialism and a universalizing tendency similar to that of the antitheatricalists. The paucity of specifically protheatrical response in prose to the immense antitheatrical work of polemicists such as William Prynne and to antitheatrical tracts and publications signals the presence of protheatrical response within the literature of the stage: its plays. Metadramatic critics have noted that metadrama provides a subtle means of establishing a connection between actors and their audience and that it serves as a means of interrogating various deployments of theatrical power and the motives implied by its use. Troilus and Cressida celebrates, interrogates, and reproves the theater, engaging the proponents and detractors of the theater through depictions of Ulysses and Pandarus as effective and ineffective interior directors, respectively. Ulysses's militaristic drive toward victory at all costs demonstrates his affinity to the figure of the stage Machiavel, while his seemingly inexplicable hostility toward Achilles similarly marks his connection to the figure of the Vice. Pandarus's relation to theatricality highlights the negative associations of theater and prostitution apparent in the works of the antitheatricalists. His self-delusory propensity to motivate others to actions to which they are already predisposed mocks and calls into question the assertion that theater exerts motivational power over its audience. Literary critics considering King Lear observe that identity loss underpins the tragic process apparent in the plays' protagonists. Depictions of staged theatrical ability and inability and positive depictions of antitheatrical Puritanism pervade King Lear. The deployment of theatricality in the play both emphasizes its creative and soteriological function and embodies the harmful potential of dramaturgical art.

Annotation:
With a narrowly defined unemployment rate of 26.5% in South Africa, this paper contributes to the salient task of exploring a job creation programme in a high growth sector of the global coffee production network, namely the production of espresso based beverages by baristas for sale in restaurants, cafes, and hotels. Situated in the qualitative paradigm with an inductive research agenda, this research utilises the case study method to explore Ground UP, a skills training programme of a local not-for-profit, which provides barista skills training that unemployed people can use to become economically active in context of the specialty coffee industry. By applying the concepts of upgrading in the context of a global production network and a descriptive focus on both the Ground UP programme, as well as the characteristics and dynamics specialty coffee industry in South Africa, this research examines the potential for this industry to offer a pathway out of poverty. Applying a theoretical lens to this descriptive case study, the theme of governance features strongly, and the analysis reveals that Ground UP, as an agent of palliative development, can help beneficiaries to access a pathway out of poverty. It is also argued that the extent to which they will be able to capture the gains in the specialty coffee industry in the longer term will be impacted on external factors and other key players in the industry as well as their positioning in a global production network.

Straw, Eric M. „Construction of a Conceptualization of Personal Knowledge within a Knowledge Management Perspective using Grounded Theory Methodology“. Thesis, Nova Southeastern University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3590345.

Annotation:

The current research used grounded theory methodology (GTM) to construct a conceptualization of personal knowledge within a knowledge management (KM) perspective. The need for the current research was based on the use of just two categories of knowledge, explicit and tacit, within KM literature to explain diverse characteristics of personal knowledge. The construct of tacit knowledge has often been explicated and debated in KM literature. The debate over tacit knowledge arose from the complex epistemological roots of tacit knowing and the construct of tacit knowledge popularized by organizational knowledge creation theory. The ongoing debate over tacit knowledge in KM literature has shed little light on personal knowledge within a KM perspective. The current research set aside the debate over tacit knowledge and pursued the construct of personal knowledge from the perspective of the knower using GTM. Thirty-seven interviews were conducted with fourteen participants. Interviews were audio recorded and coding was accomplished with the qualitative data analysis software MAXQDA.

A total of eight categories were identified. These were organized into two groups. The core category being overwhelmed represented the absence of personal knowledge. The categories questioning self, seeking help, and microthinking fit under being overwhelmed. Together these categories were inverse indicators because they all decreased as knowledge acquisition progressed. The core category being confident represented the presence of personal knowledge. The categories remembering, multitasking, and speed fit under being overwhelmed. Together these categories were direct indicators because they all increased as knowledge acquisition progressed.

Three significant conclusions were drawn from the current research. These conclusions led to the conceptualization of personal knowledge from a KM perspective. The first significant conclusion was the conceptualization of a process of knowing as Integrated Complexity: From Overwhelmed to Confident (ICOC). The second significant conclusion was personal knowing as first-person epistemology is a universally lived experience that includes commitments to internal and external requirements as well as a bias toward integration. The third significant conclusion was personal knowledge can be viewed as a complex adaptive system. Finally, the current research concluded that personal knowledge within a KM perspective is a complex adaptive system maintained through acts of first-person epistemology.

Annotation:
The research has been conducted in Bukit Barisan High Land zone consists of eight regencies located in the northern part of North Sumatra province, Indonesia. It is found that the zone is entrapped in a high poverty rate and a high unemployment level. The regions main employment sector is agriculture, where more than 50 percent of the total workforce engages in the sector. The main challenging of the regions is a very low productivity. This is due to lack of management practices and capacities in term of tools inputs, and knowledge now-how. Moreover, the lack of information and coordination between the actors of the economy i.e. farmers-local governments-enterprises-and universities in the regions has dragged away the value added products and inherited in high fluctuation of the commodities in term of prices and qualities. Accordingly a new cooperation needs to be made between all the actors of the economy in the regions. As information has a vital role in the development of the regions, this sector hence ought to be diffused in an appropriate way. This information center then called as a Competitive Intelligence (CI) Center, which is importantly formed in each region in Bukit Barisan High Land zone. The CI center will ensure the formation of the sound development programs to be applied in the regions in order to achieve a desirable growth within the regions and within the country as a whole. The program of CI center is emphasized on enhancing the potentials of each region and overcome its problems and challenging. In this thesis, Bukit Barisan High Land which consists of 8 regions is categorized as one zone regarding similarity in its topography, climate, type of soil, social condition of the society, its potentials and problems. The development of the region then suggested by the creation of the Small and Medium Enterprises close to the region to ensure the achievement of value chain between suppliers and producers in this case Farmers and enterprises. This value chain can only be achieved by a solid collaboration by all economic actors. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the most prospective commodities need to be intensified are coffee and corn. Corn is perceived as one of a prospective export regarding a continuous increase demand for the commodity globally, whereas coffee is a permanent export commodity where the decreasing supply by Vietnam has contributed to more opportunity to Indonesia. In order to provide some vision to investors, the feasibility studies of the plantation and production of two commodities will be presented at the last part of the thesis

This dissertation explores the way AIDS and death are treated in American gay literature, with a focus on works by David Feinberg, Tony Kushner and Armistead Maupin. At a crossroads where a theme (AIDS) meets a type of literature (gay literature, which pre-existed the epidemic), this dissertation takes into account the many dimensions of the HIV/AIDS epidemic: aiming at anthropological knowledge through literature (Laplantine), moving "beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries" (Campbell & Kean), it shows that, when it comes to AIDS, history probably missed the boat, but literature did not. The media, the government officials, the health authorities and the general population never took the full measure of the HIV/AIDS crisis; gay authors, by contrast, fully confronted the epidemic, while HIV was taking hold in their bodies, and produced works that deserve to be read and examined, notably because, three decades after the first cases, the HIV/AIDS epidemic still is not under control. Based on an examination of works by the three authors, that constitute a sample both in generic terms (autobiography/autofiction, novel, drama) and in terms of reception, it shows that the gay literature of AIDS is, at most, a crack or a slit, not a breakaway from the literatures that came before. As a result of this anachronistic epidemic (it appeared at a time when Man seemed to be able to believe that epidemics were a thing of the past), the body wounded by AIDS takes center stage in their lives and in their works. The dying body becomes a topos, a place of exploration and the motif that structures the text

This study is conducted to do comparison of consumer perception about Barista and Café Coffee Day. To conduct the study, we laid out some research objectives which measured consumers’ attitude across various parameters towards these coffee joints and compared them. The key aspect was to conduct a survey amongst those respondents who have been to both the coffee joints. Then do the comparison on different parameters and decide which coffee joint is perceived better by what demographic segment. The objectives included comparison of consumer perception of various products offered, measurement of consumer satisfaction, consumers’ willingness to pay, etc. All in all, the main objective was to find which café creates what value in the minds of consumer.Apart from that there were sub objectives which were to find current satisfaction levels of consumers and areas of improvement for the cafés. We did the survey on sample population of 200 people, which were of different demographic profiles. Out of these around 11 people did not qualify for the survey since they didn’t visit both the cafés even once. Once the survey was done, we did the cleanup of data to avoid bad data entries. We also made some assumptions to go ahead with the data analysis.

Abstract Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are usually used to monitor the environment. As the environment changes, we will need to change the task running on WSNs. Therefore, a concise way to reprogram each sensor node is required. Since WSNs typically contain a large amount of sensor nodes, it is difficult to retrieve them back and download new programs one by one. What is required is a power and resource efficient way of reprogramming the senor nodes in place. This is further complicated by the popularity of heterogeneous WSNs – different types of sensors require different code. To solve the problems of code portability and energy-efficient reprogramming, this thesis introduces “Barista”, a light-weight Java virtual machine developed for wireless sensors. The goal is to create a low power consumption, low memory usage and low OS resources Java virtual machine. With Barista, users can use their familiar Java language to program their WSN applications. The resultant code will be highly portable and small enough for efficient dissemination to the sensors. We have implemented Barista on TinyOS. The result shows that Barista can run on a resource limited device (32KB ROM and 1KB RAM) and the lifetime of the node is shortened by 6% only.

Recently, Taiwan has been blowing a specialty coffee trend and more and more specialty coffee shops established. Accordingly baristas are the key factors and assets for speciality coffee shops to stand the fierce competition. How to keep baristas and make them willing to share knowledge becomes the real issues. As a result, the research aims to investigate the relationships among organizaion commitament、work passion and knowledge sharing. The research, by collectting on-line questionnaires on professional barista fb sites and utilizing data analysis techniques such as descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA analysis, Pearson product-moment correlations and Regression Analysis, showed that there are significant differences among different demographic baristas in the " organizaion commitament " and " work passion ". Also higher organizaion commitament can lead to higher degree of knowledge, which is carried out through work passion. Finally managerial implications and suggestions for further researches are presented.

O'Shannassy, Michael. „Imagining identity: visions of Malaysia and the interrelationship between state, society and the global“. Phd thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/10297.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-1998 and the political crisis it engendered in Malaysia called into question the framework of governance associated with the long-standing Barisan Nasional (National Front, BN) government. And yet, despite the traumas induced by these twin crises, the fundamental relationships and structures that characterized political and economic relationships in Malaysia were not radically transformed. The underlying puzzle this thesis seeks to address is just how domestic reverberations of "the global" are mediated by the specific historical structure of a state. Utilizing the concept of national identity as an organizing principle while employing a model which positions the relationship between the international and domestic spheres and the state as a mutually constitutive dynamic offers a much more complete picture of the processes in operation. The central research question this thesis seeks to answer is: How are conceptions of national identity in Malaysia being shaped by the interrelationship between domestic society, the state and the global? By carrying out an in-depth empirical investigation into the historical (re)construction of and practices associated with national identity discourses in Malaysia, this thesis not only illuminates the society-state-global interrelationship but, in doing so, tells a story about how political elites in Malaysia have sought to construct and use ideas about "national" identity in order to, first, sediment their power and, second, to legitimize that power as authority. This thesis demonstrates that political elites in Malaysia found it easier to manipulate that identity in the periods immediately following independence in 1957 but that, in recent times, doing so has proven more difficult. The broad hypothesis behind this thesis is that state actors have found it increasingly difficult to avoid external socio-political and economic pressures, which has then made the maintenance of power and authority more problematic. That is, global forces increasingly act upon and destabilize political culture and assumptions about what is "eternal" and "taken-for-granted" in Malaysian politics and society, disrupting elite efforts to maintain social control and authority. The findings of this research have important theoretical and policy implications. At the theoretical level, they suggest that, in practice, any divide that exists between analyses of state-society relations on the one hand and state-global processes on the other, is largely redundant. But while they may be conceived of as two sides of the same coin, the exact nature of the mutually constitutive dynamic between domestic society, the state and the global may be an asymmetrical one. What is required, therefore, is a means of exploring the shape of any such asymmetry and a central finding of this thesis is that a historical consideration of discourses on national identity provides one such way of doing so. From a policy perspective, the findings suggest that political leaders in multiethnic states need to strengthen their role in formulating more inclusive conceptions of national identity if they are going to find an acceptable balance between particularistic ethnic desires and the universal desire for economic development and "national" stability in a world that is becoming increasingly globalized.

Indonesia has one of the highest diversities of plants and animals in the world and nine of the eleven felid species present in Southeast Asia are found in Indonesia. Yet, Indonesia now leads the world in the number of threatened and endangered mammal and bird species, with new species constantly added to the list. The biggest factor driving the disappearance of wildlife in Indonesia is large-scale habitat loss and degradation. The country is losing its forests at the fastest rate of any nation in the world. In Sumatra alone, nearly 3.1 million hectares of forest were lost in the past decade, and lowland forests have all but disappeared. In the face of continued habitat loss and fragmentation, and a continually increasing human population, it is becoming increasingly apparent that we have to gain some knowledge of these species on Sumatra in order to create effective conservation initiatives, else we risk losing them for good. The present project was initiated to gain such information on small felids in Sumatra. There were three elements to our study: camera trapping, live trapping, and an analysis of human-felid conflict. The camera trapping portion of our study allowed the examination of the distribution, habitat preferences, and activity patterns of small felids on Sumatra. This is the first such information on these species from anywhere in their range and is invaluable to managers as they prioritize habitats for conservation. Our study was the first to attempt live trapping and collaring of small felid species in Sumatra, and one of a very few which had been conducted in the tropical forests of Asia. We were able to capture and collar the first golden cat ever collared in Indonesia, and only the third in the world. The information gained from tracking her movement once again provides invaluable information on the ecology of this species in Sumatra. Finally, we conducted surveys of human-small felid conflict around BBSNP. Prior to our study, human conflict with small felids was not thought to be a major factor in their conservation in Southeast Asia because it was rarely reported to governmental officials. Our study is the first in Southeast Asia to characterize this conflict and its effect on the conservation of small felids in Sumatra. We also assessed the efficacy of simple education and mitigation techniques in reducing conflict, creating a successful model that can be replicated throughout the species range. Overall, this study provides valuable knowledge on the Sunda clouded leopard, the Asiatic golden cat, the marbled cat, and the leopard cat, generating information which may be used for their more effective conservation in Sumatra.
