Annotation:
The Selfridge Collection of Medici manuscripts at Harvard Business School's Baker Library is the largest collection of Renaissance Florentine account books outside Italy. This collection documents both the business and personal economic activities of one branch of the Medici family through six generations, extending from the early fifteenth century through the end of the sixteenth century. It would be difficult to find, even in Florence, another family whose economic activities are so well documented over such a long span of time, a period we know as the Renaissance. This patrimony of family documents was sold by the Medici heirs through an auction at Christie's of London in 1918; and in 1927 the buyer, H. Gordon Selfridge, deposited the ledgers at the Harvard School of Business Administration. Around one hundred ledgers arrived at Harvard at that time, but one item in the Christie's inventory was missing. In 2007, I found this missing item in the catalogue of a Munich antiquarian book dealer, but it had already been sold to a private collector in Germany. When informed of its importance for the Harvard collection, the new owner of the ledger kindly permitted Laura Linard, director of Historical Collections at Baker Library, to have it microfilmed; and so finally, after eighty years, the missing item has returned, at least in a photographic version, to its original home, thereby completing the Selfridge Collection. This event could be the occasion for a reevaluation of a major collection of business documents too long ignored by historians.

Thomas Baker's music collection is part of the special collections of the Music Library at Western University, Ontario. Thomas Baker (1719/20–94) lived mainly in Farnham, southwest of London, England, in the County of Surrey. His music collection remained largely intact, which is unusual for the library of an eighteenth-century man who lived in a small town in rural England. The collection at Western consists of 90 separate pieces of music, collections of music, and books of music theory, plus six manuscripts; an inventory of the collection illustrates the variety of musical forms that he collected. His purchase of an organ leads us to conclude that he played the organ and possibly other keyboard instruments; about 25% of his collection is for keyboard. However, he was also interested in a variety of other musical forms, either as a performer or as a collector. From the surviving information, we can create a basic portrait of Baker and his music collection, even if we can draw no definite conclusions about how it was used or if he was merely a collector, or also a performer or an organizer of concerts.

The study of the unique bibliophile heritage of writers, historians, philosophers, scientists and artists who happened to be far from Russia is important from the point of view of understanding how the best representatives of Russian emigration sought to preserve the collections that they managed to bring out of Russia and multiply over the years of living abroad. Fortunately, many collections were returned to their homeland, but many rare priceless materials remained abroad forever. The problem of book collections existence, which for one reason or another and at different times fell into the category of “prohibited”, acquired special significance at the end of 1980s – the beginning of 1990s, after the abolition of all censorship restrictions in the country, and, as a result, the opening of library special collections and archives. The purpose of the article is – on the basis of a brief source review of emigrants’ collections which entered the leading libraries of Russia from abroad, and the collection gathered by the White Guard emigrant officer and politician, historian, publicist, bibliographer Ya. M. Lisovoy – to illustrate the need to move from the analytical stage of research activity in this subject field to the synthetic one aimed at accumulating research intentions on a general cultural scale. The fate of the collection in the period from 1915 to 1992 is traced, its structure is presented, and the analysis of Ya. M. Lisovoy publishing activity is undertaken.

The purpose of this article is to describe the scope and depth of the historic corporate annual report collections in twelve academic/research libraries in North America. For many decades, a few major academic business libraries have been collecting and preserving corporate Annual Reports (ARS), the reports sent to shareholders documenting the financial status and future plans of the company. Today these historic collections provide more than a record of the companies’ finances; they provide a glimpse into the social and cultural thoughts from the past and the corporate stories of individual companies. Digitization of these reports has only just begun; so, except for fewer than 900 companies (most of which have been on the Fortune 500 list), the companies included in these historic annual report collections are not available electronically. The combined collection of the twelve libraries includes reports from nearly 38,000 different companies. Stanford, Harvard, and Western Ontario have the largest collections. Harvard and Columbia have collections with significant historic depth, while Purdue has a collection with important late–twentieth-century holdings. The overlap of the collections is much smaller than was anticipated. The two largest collections, Stanford with over 18,000 companies and Harvard with over 11,000 companies, have only 3,668 companies in common. The overlap of companies between the largest five collections is only thirty-three companies. This research identifies these collections as unique and therefore valuable to the study of specific company histories and the industrial development in North America. Librarians need to preserve these collections and work toward digitizing them.

The library's collection is a repository of historical accomplishments that have been preserved for the benefit of current and future generations. The arrangement of the records will make the extent of the library's collection much more apparent. While the majority of documents have been digitized and come with appealing new features, rural, semirural, and urban areas in our nation are yet to be digitized. Information and media are now more accessible and compatible with digital libraries than ever before in the 21st century. This article provides an overview of library collections and materials. It covers the types of materials commonly found in libraries, including books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, and electronic resources. The article also discusses the importance of collection development policies and the role of librarians in selecting, acquiring, and maintaining library materials. Additionally, the article explores the challenges libraries face in managing their collections, such as limited space, budget constraints, and changing user needs. Finally, the article concludes with a discussion of emerging trends in library collections and materials, such as open access publishing and digital libraries.

Damascus has a long and distinguished history as a center for scholars and scholarship. The Umayyad Mosque has been a hub for Muslim scholars since the first Islamic century. Under the Ayyubids and Mamluks, a flurry of madrasa-building brought professional scholars to Damascus from all corners of the Muslim world. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Damascus, many scattered manuscript collections were consolidated into the National Library, housed in the Mamluk-era Madrasa al-Zahiriyya, the pride of Syrian scholars in the age of Arab nationalism. With French rule in 1920 came an army of researchers and catalogers who established one of the region’s best library collections at the Institut Français des Études Arabes à Damas. And, in 1984, the Asad Library was established to serve as a national library and to house manuscript collections from around the country. The mid-1990s is an auspicious time for American researchers in Syria because of the establishment of the American Research Institute in Syria, Inc. (ARIS), a consortium of American universities that has been working for the past several years to establish an institute for research and residence in Damascus on par with the European facilities there. The Institute has yet to be officially approved by the Syrian government, and present efforts depend on the outcome of regional political discussions.

The complex history of Indigenous and colonizer relations in Australia has significantly impacted the terms of engagement between Indigenous peoples with libraries and archives. The library and archive sectors are now being challenged to be responsive to Indigenous calls for action for better representation and engagement with institutions and within collections. This chapter discusses developing and evaluating an Indigenous-led staff capability program designed to increase Indigenous representation and priorities in Australian libraries. By responding to the historical gaps of Indigenous perspectives and worldviews in library, archive, and information studies curriculum, the program provides learning opportunities for participants to activate support for Indigenous self-determination and sovereignty in libraries. The program aims to increase support for implementing protocols and practices that engage appropriately with racist and offensive legacy materials in library collections.

As the world responds to the COVID-19 pandemic, most governments have temporarily closed all schools. Thus, there is a transition to distance learning on a large scale. Educational institutions try to organize training using Internet technologies, students use e-books while taking e-learning courses, researchers mostly use e-journals. Academic libraries around the world are digitizing library collections, creating powerful digital libraries that help readers get information. UNESCO and the Library of Congress have developed the World Digital Library, thus making an innovative attempt to develop intercultural understanding by providing access to digital heritage from 200 countries. As in many industries, the librarian branch must undergo radical changes due to the development of digitalization and artificial intelligence. The report of the Association of Research Libraries states that there are three categories of urgent changes: changes in relationship of a research library and its institutional partners; changes in the organization of research libraries; changes in the skills of librarian staff and users of library electronic funds.

Within the web, it is possible to find an important portion of the knowledge of humankind in terms of studies and development. Preserving versions of this web content is required for future reference. File systems or databases are two main alternatives for preserving historical web content. Since databases offer a convenient way to organize and query data with respect to the file systems, they may be preferred for preserving historical web content. Thus, the goal of this chapter is to propose techniques in order to store collections of web files on a database management system. Five techniques were developed and experimentally compared in terms of performance and space. Experimental results show that the proposed techniques based on the change detection require a smaller amount of space, they are more efficient in terms of load on the database, and they have lower performance in terms of processing web file to store.

From the library preservation point of view, it is important to distinguish two types of collections in special libraries. The first type is the general collection which serves for the daily library and information needs of clients. It is a time–limited collection and should be evaluated by its use. Good collection care is what is most necessary for the preservation of a general collection. The other type is the special collection which should be evaluated by its historical value. It is a permanent collection and should mostly be conserved in original format. In the preservation of this type of special collection, conservation treatment, reformatting, and other preservation measures would be necessary in addition to collection care. This chapter delves into the best practices in managing and preserving corporate and special libraries.

The functions of the biblical Slavic-Russian apocrypha in manuscript collections depend on their perception by the ancient Russian scribes and the literary context of the manuscript. Cognitive, interpretative, magical, historical functions are associated with different genre forms, both book and folk. Particularly considered is the «apocryphal riddle» of two brothers from the manuscript of the XVIth century Stockholm Royal Library and manuscripts of the XVIIIth century collections of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg).

In the present paper, the author refers to the importance of applying measures to safeguard the cultural heritage of the Jewish community in Bessarabia, to the good practices achieved in this field, as well as to the advantages and disadvantages of information technology on capitalizing cultural memory artifacts. Digitization has been a priority for cultural heritage institutions around the world for more than 15 years. Lately, this technological process has also become an opportunity for the „Itzik Mangher” Jewish Library. The impact is major as since the last decade of the previous century, this institution has been meant to gather and preserve the cultural memory of the Jewish people living on the territory of the Republic of Moldova; to educate the younger generation in the spirit of forming a clear vision of the historical and literary heritage of the Jews within the general history of this European region; to permanently develop the museum collections of the library and to set up a Museum-Cognitive Bibliological Complex of Literature and Culture of the Jews of Moldova.

The authors discuss the provision of subject-specific search in library e-catalogs (EC). For the purposes of analysis of information retrieval languages, the ECs of Russian libraries with the collections exceeding 4 m entries were examined. The representative list comprises libraries of various types and levels. It was found that each library used its own set of information retrieval languages for providing subject-specific search, with the most popular subject headings language, keywords language, Library Bibliographic Classification [RF LBC or BBK], Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), State Rubricator of Sci-tech Information (SRSTI, or GRNTI) and Supreme Attestation Commission Rubricator (VAK Rubricator). Beside the above-mentioned information retrieval languages, the libraries use their proprietary information retrieval languages, e.g. Rubricator of the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, classification indexes of the Russian State Historical Library, or classification indexes of MSU Scientific Library. The authors conclude that the e-catalogs of the libraries under study enable subject-specific search with verbal languages (all the considered libraries) and classification languages (the majority of the considered libraries). The common features of subject-specific information retrieval in the library e-catalogs are formulated. The recommendations on how to develop provision of subject-specific retrieval when upgrading e-catalogs are suggested. The publication is prepared within the Framework of the Government Order to RNPLS&T for 2023, project No. 720000F.99.1.BN60AA03000, theme No. 1021062311369-1-1.2.1;5.8.2;5.8.3.

Alongside Teaching and Research, Italian universities are also committed to Public Engagement activities featuring teaching and cultural initiatives for a non-academic audience. At the University of Ferrara, this commitment was translated into an exhibition in April 2019, originating from a virtuous union of cultural heritage and teaching activities. The creation of the “Natura Naturata” exhibition involved the synthesis of taught courses and research by the University of Ferrara's Industrial Product Design students together with their teachers, in collaboration with librarians. In the Product Design 2 Workshop, students develop exhibition projects, starting from the curatorial concept, through the construction, up to the graphic-communicative aspects and the creation of information and teaching tools. The exhibition was created based on the study of rules used to properly protect library assets so that students could gain specific skills for the preparation of bibliographic exhibitions. It took shape in the Chemistry and Life Sciences Library Santa Maria delle Grazie to emphasize the importance of the University's tangible and intangible cultural heritage with the intention of conveying the 'world' of library collections – and also the University's historical and architectural heritage - to students, scholars, and citizens.

Jagiellonian Library in Cracow is the oldest and the biggest university library in Poland. The complicated history of the country meant that the library has to play different roles: as an academic, research, public and, in some aspects, also the role of a national library. This variety of functions causes that JL must face the increasing number of tasks carried out in the area of science, culture and access to information. Technological development, resulting in a culture of overflow, brings further complications to this difficult situation. Then it is worth to reconsider and change the direction of development. To look for unexpected partners. For JL, National Library of Poland became such a partner. In 2017, both institutions signed the agreement on strategic cooperation. According to this agreement, the parties agreed to strengthen and develop cooperation in fields related to the activities of both Libraries, in particular in providing modern forms of access to the resources of Polish and world science and culture, creating and developing an advanced information workshop supporting research scientific, protection of the national library resource and scientific research on historical collections and book culture. The article will discuss the reasons for making this important choice and discuss common tasks that will fundamentally change the approach to information and knowledge management. In particular, two important projects will be described, the implementation of which is a consequence of the signed contract: "Patrimonium" and "OMNIS e-service". The first one is connected with creating the national digital library, the second one with creating one cataloguing environment.
