Description and identification of the autograph, its introduction into scientific use, as well as its study are relevant problems of today, as the accumulated handwritten material of this kind requires samples of cataloguing. The Russian collectors propose to comprehend such material accumulated in private collections, publish previously unknown autographs, manuscripts, epistolary heritage of Russian poets, writers and artists. Peer-reviewed publications are required in the work of experts - literary critics, art historians, book historians, culturologists, students of specialized educational institutions, and all the interested in the history of the Russian culture.

This paper identifies, describes and analyses Isaac Newton's known inscriptions in alba amicorum (autograph books). It begins with an introduction to the early modern autograph book and its social utility for travelling students. Each Newton inscription is contextualized with brief biographies of the individual album owners. The potential reasons for Newton's use of his chosen epigrams are considered, as are possible reflexive dynamics between him and the album owners that may have helped to inform these choices. An allied consideration is the degree to which Newton's epigrams relate to scholarly projects with which he was engaged when he penned them. A special feature is the identification of the owner of an album from which a Newton inscription was stolen more than half a century ago. This study offers a glimpse of Newton's intellectual reputation across several decades, both on the Continent and in his native England. More broadly, this paper makes contributions to our understanding of Newton's personal life and the strategic use of alba amicorum in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries within the Republic of Letters.

The article investigates and publishes a previously unknown note-autograph of Orest Nasturel, a famous book figure of the first half of the 17th century, who made a significant contribution to the popular education in Wallachia. Orest Nasturel held the high position of the second logothete at the court of the Wallachian ruler Matei Basarab. Despite his busy schedule, he devoted much of his time to collecting ancient manuscripts, translating Latin and Church Slavonic books into Romanian, and publishing them. Establishing the facts of Orest Nasturel’s biography is based, in historiography, on the analysis of the records he left in books. The scientific novelty of this research stems from the fact that, for the first time, there is introduced into scientific circulation Orest Nasturel’s handwritten owner’s entry, found in the manuscript book of Catecheses of Theodore the Studite in the Collection of SlavonicRussian Manuscripts of E.E. Egorov of the Russian State Library (Manuscripts Department, coll. 98, no. 949). According to this record, dated 1642, Orest Nasturel, inspecting once the sovereign’s monasteries, found in the Snagov Monastery (now Romania) an ancient manuscript crumbling from decay. Since it was not possible to save it, Orest Nasturel made a long journey to Rybnitsa (now the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic), where a famous book master named Nikolai made for him, in 1642, a copy of this book, which Orest then put into the Trinity Cozia Monastery (now Romania.) In the 19th century, the book was taken in Russia, probably by Russian old believers, where it first came to the collection of the antiquarian-bookseller I.L. Silin, and then was purchased from him by E.E. Egorov. The author conducted the dating of the manuscript’s watermarks (the 1640s) and compared the note’s handwriting with known autographs of Orest Nasturel. It is noted that the beautiful head-piece and the initials of Egorov’s Collection are close to the manuscript of Octoechos of the middle of the 17th century, stored in Belgrade in the Library of Serbian Patriarchate. According to a postscript in it, the Octoechos was made in a Slavic monastery of Athos. It is established that such decoration was quite popular for South Slavic manuscripts in the middle of the 17th century, and, therefore, it was hardly copied by the scribe Nikolai from an ancient original. The main results of the study are the detection, identification, attribution, reading and publication of the previously unknown note-autograph, as well as geographical and chronological localization of the list. The author emphasizes the value of Egorov’s Collection for studying by the specialists in the field of philology and linguistics, and sets a promising task of recreating the content, language features and dating of the lost protograph.

Abstract The vast project to reconstruct a history and geography of the spread of the Dalāʾil al-Khayrāt necessarily involves looking into the beginnings of the prayerbook’s manuscript transmission. Composed in Morocco before 869/1465, the prayerbook was already known in the Eastern Maghreb from the mid-11th/17th century. It then reached Turkey and the rest of the Mashriq. After that it found its way to Central, South and Southeast Asia. Returning to the core of the book’s diffusion, this article questions the existence of an autograph copy of Dalāʾil al-Khayrāt. How was the manuscript tradition of one of the most copied religious books in pre-modern times established? This article also poses essential questions about the work of the actors (copyists, illuminators) responsible for the diffusion of the book in its early days.

A familiar image from the Roman world is a Pompeian portrait of a man and woman sometimes identified as Terentius Neo and his wife. He has a papyrus roll under his chin, while she looks out with a writing tablet in one hand, a stylus held to her lips in the other. The message of the attributes presented would seem to be: ‘ We can and do read and write’. But how should the message be interpreted? To judge from the houses in which this and similar portraits were found, the couple was not of the elite decurion class, but belonged to that difficult to define group of varying social, economic and cultural statuses recently described by Keith Hopkins as ‘sub-elites’. Does the display of book and pen then reflect the social reality of the sub-elite orders of Pompeian society, or is the self-representation rather an expression of social pretension, with the couple attempting to emulate the Roman elite? If the latter is the case, what does the image say about the habits of the Roman ruling class? This question has been raised in relation to the issue of literacy, particularly women's literacy, but the image invites another question.

An autograph manuscript written after late October 1747 by Mark Catesby, now in the collections of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA, reveals that he was the author of a summary of the final (eleventh) part of his own book, The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama islands (1729–1747). The summary was read to the Royal Society by Cromwell Mortimer in February 1748 and was then published under Mortimer's name in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. Mortimer only lightly edited Catesby's manuscript and added an encomium. In his summary, Catesby took the opportunity, several months after the publication of the final part (“Appendix”) of his two-volume book, to enlarge on a few details.

Abstract This article discusses a poorly acknowledged autograph copy of the Khiṭāynāma by Ali Akbar Khitaʾi in Persian. Unlike most studies on the work, it argues that MS Istanbul, Aşir Efendi 249 (henceforth AE 249) in the Süleymaniye library is an autograph copy completed in 1516 and presented to Süleyman I (r. 1520–1566) when he was still a prince. It also argues that the author prepared two recensions for two patrons, Selim I (r. 1512–1520) and Süleyman I, around the same time. The article further demonstrates that the appellations sultan and shah were commonly used for Ottoman princes and appeared in various manuscripts. Hence AE 249’s usage of the term sultan for Süleyman is not an inconsistency casting doubt on the date of the manuscript and its character. The article additionally provides the most comprehensive list and information on Persian manuscripts of the original work and its two different Ottoman Turkish translations. In this way, it clarifies various confusing references to the manuscripts of the work in modern scholarship. Moreover, it provides a more secure foundation for future research on the Khiṭāynāma as well as on how to discuss the titles of Ottoman patrons and how to conceptualize them in manuscript studies. Ultimately, it hopes to demonstrate that the political context may provide insights to better deal with similar works from the era.

THE OUTCROPS OF THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF STELMUŽĖ / STEINENSEE MANOR: THE BOOKS AND BOOKMARKS OF THE MANOR Based on a new fact about books from Stelmužė Manor gifted to Vytautas Magnus University in 1937, research was conducted to verify factual information regarding the number and the nature of the books gifted, to clarify the situation of the survival of the books to the present day, to identify their current storage locations, and to analyse the information in the provenance marks of the books, which speaks of von Foelckersahmbs, the owners of Stelmužė (Steinensee / Stelles muiža), and the fate of the manor that changed after the demarcation of the Lithuanian-Latvian border in 1921 and after the land reform. The list of the gifted books in the appendix is intended to reveal one of the fragments of the multifaceted multicultural heritage of Stelmužė Manor(s). We study the exemplar of the first edition of the «Eneida» (1798) by I. Kotlyarevskyi from the personal library of the famous Slavist Pawel Joseph Šafařik, which is kept in the Dept. of Manuscripts and old prints of the National Museum in Prague Library. The book was offered to P. J. Šafařik by the known Russian and Ukrainian scholar Osyp Bodyanskyi. The influence of «Eneida» on the «Naski Ukrainian Tales» (1835) by O. Bodyanskyi is confirmed by the works of Ivan Franko, where compares the national flavor of both books. We analyse the letters of O. Bodyanskyi to P. Šafařik during 1836–1857 years, published by Leonid Biletskyi (Pragus, 1932) from the archive of P. Šafařik in Prague, as well as the letters of Šafařik to Bodyanskyi during 1838–1857 years, prepared for publication by Petro Lavrov and Mykhaylo Nestorovych Speranskyi (Moscow, 1895). The letter exchange between these scholar-slavists provides grounds for exposing the international and intercultural connections. We define the areas of a common interest of O. Bodyanskyi and P. Šafařik which are: the book exchange, especially the scientific literature on Slavic studies, publishing of Slavic artefacts, providing the information on Ukraine, its language, population, history and literature by O. Bodyanskyi for the «Slavic folk studies» of P. Šafařik. We emphasize on the personal acquaintance of both scholars in Prague in 1837, confirm their contribution in establishing the status of Ukrainian language as an independent one among the other Slavic languages. The also brought into attention the fact that Taras Shevchenko first came across the studies of Šafařik via O. Bodyanskyi, and he regarded the role of the Chech scholar in Slavic revival in the first half of 19ct. We also pay particular attention to the history of the autograph of T. Shevchenko — the beginning of the poem «Ivan Gus» (later, the «Heretic») dedicated to P. Šafařik. This autograph was sent by Vasyl Bilozerskyi to the Narodnyi Dim Library in Lviv in 1863.

This is a study of a copy of A Book about Faith (Kniga o vere), which was published in Moscow in 1648. The book was found in Vyatka in 2019 during an archaeographic expedition organized by the Repository of Ancient Manuscripts (Drevlekhranilishche) of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkinskii Dom) in St. Petersburg. According to a note in the book, this copy was donated to the Spaso-Lomskaia Ignatieva Hermitage in 1659. This copy of A Book about Faith represents one of the few pieces of evidence for the early period of Saint Ignatii Lomskii’s veneration. This study shows that the book was donated when the hermitage was under the rule of Steward Grigorii (Ivan Neronov) and that its donor was Feoktist, the former hegumen of the Moscow Zlatoust Monastery. The note represents Feoktist’s autograph. The note is examined in the context of his biography and literary activities. A detailed examination of this note also reveals new materials concerning the history of the Spaso-Lomskaia Hermitage. One of the findings is that one book that represented a gift by Tsarina Maria Ilinichna, which is now housed in the collection of M. I. Chuvanov in the Russian State Library in Moscow, once belonged to the library of the Spaso-Lomskaia Ignatieva Hermitage.

The contribution of nurses to the morale of wounded and dying young men during World War 1 was immense. Alice Welford came from the small North Yorkshire village of Crathorne, joined the Queen Alexandra Imperial Military Nursing Service in 1915 and spent the following two and one half years in nursing casualties from some of the fiercest battles of the war including Gallipoli and Salonika. She kept an autograph book inscribed by wounded and dying soldiers, with poignant verses and humorous drawings showing love, wit and tragedy. Despite the dreadful conditions, kindness and compassion brought them comfort and raised their morale – a critical message for today, and Alice’s gift to us from World War I.

The article describes the recently discovered Mikhail Bulgakov’s inscription and debates with the researchers who tend to interpret the inscription as the writer’s genuine manuscript marked with the syntactic and lexical features characteristic of his style. The alleged autograph presents an inscription addressed to the writer Vikenty Veresaev on the Mikhail Meisel’s book “A Brief Outline of Modern Russian Literature” (1931). Offering his own point of view on the inscription, the author compares the text of the manuscript with the true facts of Vladimir Meisel’s biography, who is presented in this inscription in the image of a filibuster. The article analyzes the legitimacy of the use of maritime vocabulary, gives examples of its use in the novel The Master and Margarita, thus proving that there is no reason to associate Mikhail Maisel with the image of the filibuster. The study of Mikhail Bulgakov’s epistolary suggests that we are dealing with the processing of Bulgakov’s letter, in which the image of Vsevolod Vishnevsky is drawn using maritime vocabulary. The latter seems logical being confirmed by the facts of Vishnevsky’s biography. Since the vocabulary refers to a completely different person and has Bulgakov’s original manuscript as its source, it can be concluded that the newly found autograph is a literary hoax created using the original texts of Mikhail Bulgakov. This particular example demonstrates the effectiveness of philological methods for recognizing falsified manuscripts of the classics of Russian literature — a problem of textual criticism which remains salient.

Abstract The focus of this article is the manner in which Thomas Ebendorfer of Hasselbach, a Viennese theologian lecturing on Book I of the Sentences in 1421, deals with the topic of virtus sermonis and the relation between theology, philosophy, and logic in his Prologue from the autograph MS Wien, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, 4369 (ff. 7r–8v). By combining a double classification of each science (into acquisita vs. infusa) with a double perspective of their relation (temporal vs. natural), and by making a strong claim for theology’s role in advancing new logical theories, Ebendorfer’s view reflects a progressive awareness of the distinction between theology and philosophy which, in turn, entails very different applications of virtus sermonis in the two sciences. The publication is concerned with little known facts of the life and literary research of Nikolay Lerner (1877–1934), a renowned Pushkin scholar, critic, literary historian and translator, who authored Pushkin’s Labours and Days [Trudy i dni Pushkina] (1910), Tales about Pushkin [Rasskazy o Pushkine] (1929), and Essays of a Pushkin Scholar [Pushkinologicheskie etyudy] (1935). The paper also details his plans to compile, comment and publish reminiscences of the prominent sociologist and journalist S. Yuzhakov (1849– 1910), entitled Notes of an Old Writer [Zapiski starogo pisatelya]. Intended for publication by Kolos, a private publishing house managed by F. Vityazev, the book never saw the light of day. On 19 March 1931, Lerner was arrested on the charges of counterrevolutionary propaganda among the literary community as well as purchasing of valuable museum items and their smuggling across the border. The charges were dropped on 29 March and his case was closed; the scholar was released from custody on 13 May of the same year. The incident was described by the historian R. Ivanov-Razumnik in a dedicated chapter of his memoir and by the philologist and commentator of Pushkin’s oeuvre Y. Oksman.

A Newly Discovered Autograph by Tomasz Treter: A Notebook with a Design of a Book of Emblems The goal of the paper is to present the attribution and codicological analysis of a manu- script currently stored at Biblioteca civica Angelo Mai in Bergamo (sign. MM 378). The paper describes the manuscript codicologically, also hypothesizing as to its presence in the Bergamo library. Based on a manuscript annotation on the codex’s upper pastedown, I argue that it was intended as a gift for one of the Załuski family. On the basis of the printed correspondence between Józef Andrzej Załuski and Angelo Maria Querini, it may be assumed that Codex MM 378 was among the parcels containing manuscripts from the circle of Stanisław Hosius that the Italian librarian intended to send to Załuski. The boxes with the codices never reached the Polish librarian due to the tardiness of the messenger, Jacques David Frédéric Perard. It is claimed here that both the inscriptions and images in the code are authored by Tomasz Treter. The manuscript’s attribution was based on palaeographic analysis (comparing the handwriting with Treter’s epistolography stored in the archives in Kraków and Olsztyn). According to the dates included in the code, the inscriptions were made between 20 June 1569 and 2 March 1575. The manu- script thus represents the earliest known evidence of Treter’s artistic activity. The auto- graph contains some previously unknown emblems by Treter, and a preliminary design of the emblem work Symbolica vitae Christi meditatio (published 1612). As many as 51 sketches in the manuscript overlap with the emblematic icons of the 1612 printing, all of which are more symbolic (hieroglyphic) representations of Christian virtues known from Treter’s printing, while there are no sketches of icons in the printed book refer- ring to specific biblical scenes. Therefore, there is still uncertainty about the authorship of these compositions, which also differ in the quality of rendition from the previously mentioned ones. Comparing the autograph with the artist’s later published work offers insight into his technique. The drawings in the manuscript show very clear inspiration of Claude Paradin, Gabriel Syméon, Aneau Barthélemy and Andrea Alciato, which is not always conspicuous in the printed version. The analysis includes the final note, mention- ing imprese with the painter Lorenzo Lotto, which explains correspondences between this artist’s work and the emblems from Symbolica vitae Christi meditatio.

The circumstances surrounding the compilation of many seventeenth-century English keyboard manuscripts remain unknown. The most concrete information exists for the early-seventeenth-century repertory, and scholars have also identified several copyists from sources dating from the end of the century. Without considering the question of repertory, the focus on the earlier manuscripts can be explained in part for the following reasons. A few volumes are associated in some way or another with famous composers (for example, Thomas Tomkins and his autograph Conservatoire National de Musique (in Bibliothèque Nationale), Paris, (F-Pc) MS Rés. 1122), and others are noteworthy for their expansive contents (Fitzwilham Museum, Cambridge MS Mu 128, the famous ‘Fitzwilliam Virginal Book‘). Others are well known because their copyists are familiar personalities, such as British Library, London (Lbl) RM MS 23.1.4 and F-Pc MS Rés. 1185—both connected with Benjamin Cosyn, organist of Dulwich College and conspicuous for his knowledge of John Bull's music. However, the copyists of most mid-century keyboard manuscripts remain unidentified. Concrete information concerning the copyists of a few sources exists, but most identified copyists are unknown men or women—keyboard music in the hand of a prominent musician is quite rare.

The paper deals with the work of the little-known writer Nikica Bovolini (Dubrovnik, 1899 - Belgrade, 1975). She published a book of short stories entitled Between Light and Darkness (Izmedju svijetla i tmine), in Dubrovnik, in 1921. The copy of this book kept in the holdings of the National Library of Serbia in Belgrade is unique because it contains a handwritten addition - the autograph of a poem entitled To the Serbian Warrior (Srpskom ratniku), signed by the authoress. In this poem, dated in Dubrovnik in 1918, written at the end of the First World War, the young poetess Nikica Bovolini expresses sincere admiration for the Serbian soldier as a liberator of the Adriatic. The short stories in this collection were written at the end of the Great War or immediately after it, mostly inspired by the struggle for freedom and unification of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, as well as by the importance of educating young generations and the development of science in creating a better society. In periodical publications between the two world wars appeared a small number of her poems and three articles that were not of literary character. The full extent of her creativity is unknown. Nikica Bovolini was from the first generation of nurses that graduated from the School of Nursing of the Red Cross Society of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, founded in 1921 in Belgrade. As an instructor and assistant to the headmistress of the School of Nursing she significantly contributed to the organization and education of nurses in Yugoslavia after the First World War.

The article introduces the newly discovered manuscript of Osip Mandelstam's poem “Ode to Beethoven”, which was preserved in the family archive of Semen Lipkin. The autograph was taken into account in Nikolay Khardzhiev’s notes to the “Poems” in the Big Series of “Poet’s Library” (1973), but later it had been inaccessible to researchers for many years. The authors describe and comment in detail on the draft manuscript of the poem — the poet’s first appeal to the ode genre with the development of a stanza inherent in the genre. The text on the back of the sheet is identified by the authors as a fragment of an abstract on the history of the Western Church, which directly correlates with the manuscript “Justification of the Conciliarity” from the poet’s archive in Princeton. Saying that it is impossible to establish exactly whether the fragment is an abstract of a book or a lecture, the authors attempt to date it on the basis of biographical information and a number of textual features. The publication is concluded with a brief commentary on the abstract, as well as photocopies of the manuscript (on both sides of the sheet), which should greatly facilitate researchers' access to this important source

There is an unknown note by Nikolai Gogol in his pocket notebook. The reasons why it has remained unpublished for a long time are thoroughly highlighted. What is listed are similar – numerous – Nikolai Gogol’s texts of religious content, which also used to be inaccessible to the Soviet reader for a long time for ideological reasons. In the ninth volume of the academic Nikolai Gogol's Complete Works of 1937–1952, where a notebook was printed for the first time from an autograph, only one line in the notes was devoted to a note which had been entitled “To pray” by Nikolai Gogol himself. In addition to the title, the laconic information provided by the volume commentator Georgiy Fridlender, the content of Nikolai Gogol's recording was not disclosed in any way. In turn, the error made by the same commentator in the dating of the note is corrected. The data are given in favour of the fact that the record was made not in 1846, as the researcher believed, but three years earlier, in the summer of 1843. The connection of the 1843 note with the final religious-patriotic book of Nikolai Gogol "Selected Passages from Correspondence with Friends" 1846, as well as the invariability of the political views of the writer.

Urbino. November 1464. Antonio Petrucci, a preeminent Senese politician and condottiero, is still imprisoned, following his defeat at the hands of papal troops on 30 October 1461. During his captivity, Petrucci composed a Zibaldone (a commonplace book), in which he mainly copied lyrics by Latin classics and Italian poets and humanists. Petrucci’s autograph also contains a complaint against Fortune dated 10 November 1464, which is one of the last texts of the manuscript. Petrucci was certainly not the first medieval author to reflect on human fate and the role of Fortune. On the contrary, the image of the wheel of Fortune is probably among the most iconic of the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, Petrucci’s complaint is not simply a general reflection on the role of Fortune. The lamentation is chiefly the way Petrucci decided to portray his own personal fall, accusing the “very cruel Fortune” of depriving him of his “illustrious and gracious homeland”, Siena. It would be superficial to reduce the Senese’s complaint to a simple description of his misadventures, and the same is true for every document written by someone who suffered a failure. Petrucci’s case raises questions about the sources available to historians to study the history of downward mobility.

The article investigates insufficiently researched issues related to A. I. Klibanov’s book collection. The review of the detected autographs, exlibris and ownership stamps provides an opportunity to determine custodial history of books from both state libraries and personal collections, as well as to reveal unique information about relationships and cooperation between medieval scholars in the second half of the 20th century. The dedicatory inscriptions on the books differ in their length and originality; therefore, their significance as a source is directly proportional to how close a sender and a receiver were. Identification and description of bookplates and stamps in the study of the “Klibanovskaya” collection, still unknown from available reference books, will help in the study of other memorial book collections where such provenance marks can be found. The article also details the features of the formation of the foreign part of the A. I. Klibanov’s book collection. The foreign part of the memorial book collection, which is relatively small compared with the entire collection, can be divided into several thematic blocks: books with autographs donated by researchers dealing with similar scientific problems as the owner of the collection; multi-temporal books on historical and religious subjects, acquired by the owner; instances not related to the previous two blocks. The article identifies, systematizes and describes the inscriptions and ownership marks on the books of the collection of A. I. Klibanov.

This study examines the early phase of the self-defining process in Russian literary modernism, which demonstrated a desire to establish clear demarcation between “decadence” and “symbolism” on one hand and to be free from the psychopathological discourse in the evaluation of new artistic phenomena, thereby shifting the conventionally recognized border between “norm” and “pathology.” This paper analyses Aleksander Blok’s own views on “decadence” and “decadents” on the basis of his ego-documents (his diary and notebooks), discusses “decadents” and “symbolists” in the press, and, finally, the poet’s response to them and its literary embodiment — the poem “A. M. Dobrolyubov” (1903). In this poem Blok represents the image of one of the first Russian decadents A. Dobrolyubov, whose life became a legend, giving rise to a certain narrative. The basic concepts of the image created by Aleksander Blok in this poem are investigated, in particular, the image of a “sick child”: its sources, which date back to the polemics of the early 1900s and to a corpus of articles written by Z. Gippius, are identified along with a number of intertextual parallels (D. Merezhkovsky, F. Dostoevsky, A. Dobrolyubov). The article traces the poem’s textological history (from a note in the autograph book and the first publication to the inclusion in the “lyrical trilogy”) and reveals the functions of the epigraph as a marker of the “Petersburg text.”

Within the mid-fourteenth century Parisian manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, latin 7378A, three as yet unedited music treatises are found, copied in a tiny, highly abbreviated script in a section of the manuscript devoted mostly to the music treatises of Jean des Murs. The incipits of the three treatises are as follows: ‘Omnes homines natura scire desiderant’, ‘Partes prolationis quot sunt’, and ‘Celebranda divina sunt officia in ecclesia’. Lawrence Gushee suggested that Jean des Murs may be their author, since Jean listed a book loan of a work authored by him with incipit ‘Omnes homines’ in the manuscript El Escorial, Real Biblioteca de San Lorenzo, O.ii.10, that contains his autograph annotations. This article focuses on the content of the second treatise, which appears to be closely related to Jean des Murs’s own Compendium artis musicae. The Compendium begins: ‘Partes prolationis quot sunt? Quinque’, whereas the answer to the same opening question posed in the BnF lat. 7378A treatise is ‘Quattuor’. The text of this treatise is considered as a witness to early ars nova theory as it relates to the theories propagated in Jean des Murs’s early works, and to the transmission of these texts within the layer of BnF lat. 7378A that is devoted to works by Jean des Murs and his contemporaries on music and astronomy.

Summary Andrej Tarkovskij’s autograph manuscripts and annotated typescripts are archives of change. On the basis of an exemplary passage in a recently surfaced letter by Tarkovskij to Kitty Hunter Blair this article provides a text-critical introduction into the complex history of the creation and relation between the written records of ‘Zapečatlennoe vremja’ – Tarkovskij’s only book on film, which has remained a fragment. The textual witnesses – annotated Typescripts and manuscripts – scattered today among various (private) archives, raise the question of the possibility and form of representation within a reliable critical edition in the original language. This article argues that only scrupulous transcription and the precise exegesis of Tarkovskij’s overwritings, deletions, additions and rearrangements within the textual witnesses will allow an adequate interpretation. A term-historical article appears within the article for hermeneutical reasons: The Stalinist definition of ‘naturalism’ and how it was repressively used against Soviet artists is explained along with its ties to terror. The ‘naturalism’ critique as an accusation in the arts was put forward well beyond the dictator’s death and negatively affected also Tarkovskij’s work for decades. The passage from the letter discussed here, shows how Tarkovskij reflected and reacted to the conditions of Soviet (self-)censorship related to ‘naturalism’ critique. The interpretation this article gives of the passage in Tarkovskij’s letter relies on the analysis of differing textual witnesses of ‘Zapečatlennoe vremja’.

The author reviews two publications in album studies. The stimulus to write this review was primarily the personal impression induced by the scope of scientific and cultural information combined with professional one, and equally attractive way of its presentation. The two books in question address different readership and apply different methods, yet they deal with the same cultural phenomenon and in a certain way continue and supplement each other. The first subject of the review is the beautiful, amply illustrated publication of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, entitled The Garden of Remembrances (2016) and consisting of two separate parts. Reda Griškaitė, the author of the first part called „Essays in Album Studies“, gradually reveals the stages of shaping the album canon, the reasons and ways of its change, the meaning that individual inscriptions or drawings had to the albums’ owners and their contemporaries. She discusses the close connections existing between the contents of these “books of friends” and the forms of the cultural life, the structure of the social relations, and the historical situation of the past epochs. The essay presents concise yet very informative cultural study, incorporating special knowledge from various disciplines, including literature studies, history, art, music, botany etc. Each fragment of this essay deals with separate feature of the album contents and aesthetics. To introduce the history and development of the album genre, the author of the essay analyses fifty albums stored at the Wroblewski Library (the first inscription in them dating as early as 1609, while the last coming from 1973). The author also discusses at least thirty unique manuscripts, preserved at other libraries both in Lithuania and abroad, or in private keeping. The second part of the book presents the catalogue of the albums stored at the Wroblewski Library, compiled by the book researcher Rima Cicėnienė following the international practice in this field. This catalogue is the first register of album amicorum accumulated in a single institution of the Lithuanian cultural heritage.Unlike the previously reviewed publication, focusing mostly on the old, classic albums, the second book discussed in this review deals with the late kind of albums that thrived in the 20th century. This is the monograph The Tradition of Autograph Albums in the Culture of Latvian Schoolchildren (2013) by the Latvian folklorist Baiba Krogzeme-Mosgorda. Using the contextual method of analysis, this author focuses on the social environment of the albums, which she highlights by discussing the influences that institutions (like school), family, community, various subcultures and other social factors (including age groups, gender, and social status) had on this kind of written culture, its contents and expression. Among the schoolchildren, the albums played not only an important socializing role. The analysis of the textual repertoire and decorations used in them enables recognizing the schoolchildren’s albums of remembrances as an educational activity that also enhances creativity

Summa contra gentiles by Thomas Aquinas was translated in the XIV c. by Demetrios Kydones (1324/5-1397). This translation had a great impact on the Late Byzantine and post-Byzantine theology. Chapter 61 «On the Eucharist», book four of Summa was used by George Gennadios II Scholarios (ca. 1400 - paulo post 1472) in compiling a homily on the Eucharist, which happened to be one of the sources of the decrees of the anti-Calvinist Orthodox councils of the 17th century. We publish the chapter from Vaticanus gr. 616 (XIV c. autograph of Kydones) and Taurinensis 23 (C-2-16) (15th century manuscript, possessed by Scholarios). The apparatus contains the material that was affected by this chapter in the later Orthodox doctrine concerning the Holy Eucharist. In the preface we made some observations on Kydones choice of Greek translations of Latin terms.

The library of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine (NMHU) contains printed editions originating from the book collection of Khvedir (Teodor) Vovk (Volkov). The affiliation of these editions to the said book collection is evidenced by the presence of proprietary autographs, gift inscriptions, bookplates and stamps of Khvedir Vovk's library. Analyzing the range of books allows you to find out the range of scientific contacts and interests of the library owner. Оwn library Khvedir Vovk began collecting in Paris, where he lived and worked in 1887—1905. In 1905 he moved his book collection to St. Petersburg. Аccording to the testament, the Khvedir Vovk's library in 1920 entered to the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. In 1921 on the basis of this book collection at the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology named after Khvedir Vovk was founded the Library. It is probable, that the first books from the Khvedir Vovk's library in 1934 entered to the book collection of the Central Historical Museum of Ukraine (predecessor of NMHU), after the disbandment of the Cabinet (former Museum) of Anthropology and Ethnology named after Khvedir Vovk. The modern book collection of the NMHU contains French-language and Russian-language books, representing the products of the printing houses of Amsterdam, Paris, Lyon and St. Petersburg of 1725—1821. These are quite rare publications on the history of Ukraine, in particular the Cossacks, and the ethnography of the peoples of the world. They marked with bookplates and proprietary autographs of Khvedir Vovk or prints of the stamp of the Library of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology named after Khvedir Vovk. The range of these antique books determines certain aspects of scientific interests of Khvedir Vovk. Books with gift inscriptions to Khvedir Vovk determine the range of scientific and private contacts of Khvedir Vovk with colleagues and friends, in particular representatives of the St. Petersburg's Ukrainian diaspora.

Debates about editorial properties have been at the center of scholarship on Emily Dickinson since the 1981 publication of Ralph W. Franklin's two-volume The Manuscript Books of Emily Dickinson. Many critics now work from the assumption that autograph poems have primacy over their printed versions, and it has been suggested that to read Dickinson in any standard typographical edition is effectively to read her in translation, at one remove from her actual practices. More specifically, critics have claimed that the line arrangements, shapes of words and letters, and particular angle of dashes in the autographs are all potentially integral to a poem's meaning, making a graphic contribution to its contents. In this essay I set out to test the hypothesis of Dickenson's proleptic textual radicalism, by looking closely at features such as spacing, the physical direction of the writing, and letter shapes in handwritten lyric and epistolary texts. By systematic contextualization and cross-referencing, I hope to provide the historical scholar of manuscripts with a set of procedures - a critical apparatus - by which to measure the extent to which contemporary critical approaches to Dickinson's autograph procedures can reasonably be formulated as corresponding to the poet's own purposes.

Preservation and accessibility of cultural heritage, the most important part of which are book monuments, is the main task of libraries and other cultural institutions.An important achievement in the implementation of the state policy was the consolidation in the Russian legislation of the norms governing the work with book monuments, the formation of the Register of Book Monuments, the creation of the site “Book Monuments” within the framework of the national project “Culture”, being the part of the National Electronic Library.The article presents the first results of work on the identification, study and digitization of book monuments from the collection of rare books stored in the non-digital collection of the Presidential Library.The purpose of this article is to introduce researchers to book monuments from the collection of rare books of the Presidential Library, the peculiarities of presenting their digital copies in the library's electronic collection.A brief description of the documents identified in the collection of rare books with signs of book monuments is given. Among them, there are early printed books; books with autographs, records of scientific, historical, cultural interest; books from personal collections of prominent people, etc. Considerable attention is paid to the description of the rarest and most interesting copies. The basic principles and approaches to digitization and presentation of book monuments in the central collection of electronic documents are considered. Special attention is paid to the experience of the Presidential Library in forming the digital collection “Book Monuments of the Presidential Library”, which includes selected domestic and foreign editions published before 1830.
