Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis research aims to focus on Korean short stories written by young writers born in the 1980s. Despite being raised under a democracy and easier conditions than their seniors, the so-called “young generation” of writers displays a constant gloominess and uneasiness in their works. Through the examples of five short stories, loneliness and silence are analyzed under an interdisciplinary approach, making use of both literary and translation studies. While producing a fully commented translation, this thesis shows how the fact of being alone can be felt by young people in today’s Korean society, opposing a negative loneliness coming from the isolation from the group one wishes to be part of, and a positive solitude viewed as a oasis of calm in the middle of a roaring daily life often made stressful by the Confucian-hierarchy-inspired norms. We analyze how being alone can be seen both in a positive and negative way, and also as a voluntary or involuntary fact. Furthermore, the characters displayed in the short stories suffer from difficulties of speech and communication. Real and direct communication is hardly made possible, would it be a matter of “wrongly-said” from the first speaker, or “wrongly-understood” from the interlocutor. When this speech uneasiness turns into silence, the involuntary incapacity to speak from fear is added to the voluntary choice to hide from the risks of a distorted oral production. Thus, while expressing the suffering of one’s life, silent expression such as writing and literature appears to be the easiest choice

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleZainichi Korean literature (zainichi literally meaning “to be in Japan”) has met widespread recognition on the Japanese literary scene since the late 1960s. But in fact Korean zainichi writers emerged earlier: in the aftermath of WW2, during the decolonization of Korea and the subsequent Korean War. This dissertation focuses on the construction process of a new literary discourse, intricately linked to the question of identity, but also on the criticism it underwent. Furthermore, this work analyzes the aesthetic strategies used by each author to distance theirs works from Japanese literature. This dissertation focuses on the following three authors: Kim Tal-su (1919-1997), Kim Sŏk-pŏm (1925-) and Yi Yang-ji (1955-1992), who respectively represent a period of development of zainichi literature: the emergence of zainichi writers between 1946 to early 1950, the establishment of a new literary category in the early 1970s, and the thematical and narrative renewal in the 1980s.These authors worked on different themes and wrote in distinct styles, and yet their writings were all born within a complex relationship to their community, as a minority and diaspora. As such, they narrate individual histories, which also carry a memorial and political dimension. Thus, the history of zainichi literature is also a history of individual voices, which emerge from and permanently renew the tension between the subjective and the collective
