This study attempts to identify and explore the psychodynamics of Australian
and Korean business encounters in Seoul, Republic of Korea, by describing and
discussing 'Australian-ness' and 'Korean-ness' as representations of what I will call
'National character in-the-mind'. A guiding hypothesis is that in highly charged
emotional settings, like those associated with foreign business encounters, National
character in-the-mind acts as a psychological and emotional container, and a protective
screen to hide more intricate institutional anxieties and defences. The data supporting
the study is drawn from my interviews with 12 Australian and 6 Korean business people
conducted between 3 and 14 June 1996 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The study also
reflects my experience and role as researcher in the research as a source, creator and
interpreter of data through the exploration of my own introspection. The findings
demonstrate how Australian-ness and Korean-ness appear to represent projections of the
human imagination, willed within the bounds of individual experience and perception.
A model for evaluating Cultural Misunderstanding and Defensive/Adaptive Behaviour
is proposed with the aim of seeking improved understanding of the Australian and
Korean National character. The model applies learning from the research experience
which emphasises the need for Australian and Korean business people to take a more
adaptive approach to the contrary behaviours they encounter. The model also
acknowledges the value of investing time to establish and maintain cross-cultural
business relationships based on access, whereby Australian and Korean business people
see themselves as resources of mutual gain, reducing the potential for
misunderstanding, fear and mistrust and the subsequent invocation of defensive
responses.

The high-volume, hands-off approach of online sales is a direct contradiction to that of the high touch, human relationship-based luxury retail industry. It is for this reason that, until recently, many luxury brands have avoided e-retail - the belief is that it cheapens their image (Okonkwo, 2010). However, the successful experiences of certain companies in specific regions are gradually giving many luxury retailers a reason to reconsider e-commerce. For example, the luxury retailer Ralph Lauren has experienced huge success in e-commerce (see Figure 1), and is on a mission to proliferate their multi-channel sales model across the globe. South Korea is one of the most recent locations in which Ralph Lauren has chosen to roll out an e-retail initiative. Explosive economic growth across Asia has rapidly expanded the market for luxury goods and services. In South Korea, this growth has been particularly strong and consistent, as has South Korean consumers' appetite for luxury. This strong market growth, confluent with the reputation as the world's most wired country, makes South Korea an attractive target for e-commerce implementation. The Ralph Lauren team came to us with a rather broad request: to help them investigate the potential challenges of their e-retail initiative in South Korea. Through our research, we found several interesting and pertinent optimization models that could be modified to plan for Ralph Lauren's e-retail operation in South Korea, but as we delved into these models we realized that they didn't address Ralph Lauren's paramount mission in Korea, which is to "elevate the brand". We took a step back and zeroed in on our focus question: how could Ralph Lauren elevate its brand while simultaneously launching an e-commerce initiative in South Korea? We believe the insights gained from our study will help Ralph Lauren utilize "systems-thinking" to make strategic and operational decisions in South Korea that can elevate their brand image. These insights might also apply to other luxury retailers considering an e-commerce initiative in South Korea or other countries. This thesis presents several thought models that incorporate factors like inventory policy, brand strength, mediation, customization and online sales mix - which may make this research of interest to sales, marketing, operations and supply chain professionals.<br>by Mark F. This thesis begins by questioning the applicability of Western concepts and measures of workplace bullying to the Far East culture. Facing such an issue, the thesis aims to address the role of culture on workplace bullying by examining the emic and etic dimensions and developing an indigenous bullying scale. By emic was meant culturally specific dimension while by etic was meant culturally neutral dimension. Three studies were conducted which illustrated the emic and etic dimensions of workplace bullying. The first study was based on a questionnaire survey with 50 Korean and 43 UK employees and showed the extent of cultural differences in the employees’ concepts of and attitudes towards workplace bullying. Based upon these results, the qualitative part of the second study developed an indigenous bullying questionnaire (KBAQ: Korean Bullying Acts Questionnaire) through a repertory grid with 42 Korean participants. Then, the quantitative part of the study tested employees’ agreement of the KBAQ items being examples of bullying using a questionnaire survey with 76 Korean and 75 UK participants. Finally, the third study conducted a questionnaire survey utilising KBAQ and NAQ-R (Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised). 193 Korean and 167 UK employees participated. The study highlighted cultural differences in the descriptive aspects of workplace bullying such as the prevalence rate, bully/perpetrator status, health outputs (e.g., job satisfaction and work-related burnout) and predictors (e.g., leadership style, role conflict, and interpersonal conflict). The results also evidenced the validity and reliability of KBAQ and revealed that KBAQ had a greater applicability for Korean employees and NAQ-R for UK employees. The consistent findings of cultural differences suggest the need for an indigenous approach in examining workplace bullying. This thesis makes a significant contribution to the literature on workplace bullying in the Far East and provides the ground for the advancement of the indigenous approach to workplace bullying research.

Although skin disease and musculoskeletal disorders are believed to be common among nursing home workers, to date there have been no coordinated international studies of these occupational issues. Therefore, it was considered appropriate to conduct one of the first cross-cultural investigations of occupational dermatology and ergonomic complaints among nursing home workers in Australia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan using a standardised methodology. This thesis documents a 4-year investigation of skin disease and musculoskeletal disorders conducted among 465 nursing home staff in Australia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Skin diseases were diagnosed by specialist physicians during medical examinations, while information on musculoskeletal disorders was collected by means of a self-reported questionnaire. There were major differences in both the location and type of skin disease between the 4 groups. Overall, the Australian group suffered a generally higher prevalence of skin disease than in the other three countries investigated, most likely due to their significantly higher rate of sun-induced skin damage. The high prevalence of cutaneous fungal disease seen within the Taiwanese subjects most probably arose from the comparatively higher temperature and relative humidity of Taiwan. Other potentially important skin disease risk factors included previous skin disease and a history of allergy, both of which are consistent with current knowledge. Although musculoskeletal disorders were found to be most prevalent among the Japanese nursing home staff at almost all body sites, the reasons for this are not clear. It may have related to a generally higher musculoskeletal rate, or a higher degree of self-reporting on their questionnaires. Individual MSD risk factors included moving patients, washing patients, working as an assistant nurse and daily alcohol consumption. Interestingly, MSD was found to be a co-factor for current skin disease. Overall, this study indicated that certain occupational health issues consistently affect nursing home staff in the 4 countries, but the prevalence and rank order varies from nation to nation. It was also shown that nursing home work incurs a reasonable degree of risk and that skin disease and musculoskeletal disorders are important occupational issues within these facilities.

Particular attention is paid to legal issues, electronic funds transfer and on-line reverse auctions. An E-Commerce implementation plan is presented, benchmarked on the experience of the United States military in using EC to reduce costs and enhance readiness. This plan includes measures of organizational outcomes to evaluate the success of an EC implementation.

The use of teams in organisations has become widespread, and research on teams has been extensive. However, in comparison with measures of organisational level variables there has been comparatively little research on team members’ attitudes and behaviour. This study examines team members’ commitment to their team and to their organisation using data from two transport-related companies in the small- and mediumsized category in South Korea (N=358). Drawing on social exchange theory and the cognition-attitude-behaviour mechanism, the thesis proposes a multiple mediation model that suggests team commitment and organisational commitment mediate the relationship between psychological empowerment and organisational citizenship behaviour. Prior to examining the proposed theoretical model, the thesis looks at the applicability of Allen and Myer’s (1990) organisational commitment scale and the distinctiveness of team commitment from organisational commitment. Parsimonious validity testing suggests that the normative organisational commitment scale is not applicable, and a three-factor model of organisational commitment works better in a South Korean context. Analysis of structural equation models using LISREL supports the two commitments’ multiple mediation role, demonstrating that both team commitment and organisational commitment positively and independently mediate the relationships between psychological empowerment and organisational citizenship behaviour. Further, results present the negative interaction effects of the two commitment forms on organisational citizenship behaviours.

Although some research has focused on feminist practice in general, the external and internal dynamics of feminist practice still remains theoretically and empirically under-researched. This study addresses this void in feminist research and places a special focus on the relationship of feminist organisations with the state and within the broader context of the women's movement. This thesis explores the constitution and maintenance of feminist practices in one specific context in South Korea and Australia. Drawing on empirical and historical data derived from the case studies, two questions are explored in this study: What constitutes feminist practices in a feminist organisation? How can feminist practices be sustained?. Two feminist-run Sexual Assault Centres (SACs), one in Korea, one in Australia are studied and analysed, involving 32, in-depth interviews with activists of the two centres, non-participant and participant observation, and document analysis. First, this thesis provides a detailed account of feminist practice and organisational dynamics among feminist organisations, the feminist movement and the state. This thesis confirms that the practices of feminist organisations are seen as dynamic processes constituted by the context in which they are situated, the role of feminist activists and the nature and strength of the broader women's movement. This study, in particular, demonstrates that the relationship of the organisation with the state is a strong determinant in constructing feminist practices. Second, this thesis examines organisational practices at different phases such as the establishment, development and crisis phases. As both centres were experiencing crises, the study illuminates that the crisis in each centre has provided an opportunity for re-examination and reflection on their practices in shifting internal and external contexts. This study also suggests that continuous reflexive attention is necessary to maintain feminist practices. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the role of the activists in constructing and maintaining feminist practices is critical, in particular, in small organisations such as the ASAC and KSAC. This research, the first major study on feminist practices in Korea and Australia, makes a significant contribution to the study of feminist organisations, the state and, in general, feminist theory.

This thesis compares the political culture of university students in South Korea before and after the democratic transition in 1987. It identifies the changes in the following: the attitudes to politics, government and media; the political socialization process; the experience of political participation; and the reasons for political participation and non-participation. Qualitative analysis was used to analyse the data collected from interviews and surveys conducted on respondents who were university students in the 1980s and current university students. It was found that compared to university students in the 1980s, current university students held less intensely negative attitudes towards the government. However, although current university students were interested in politics, they were still distrustful of politicians, did not have a political party they supported and had low levels of perceived political efficacy and political participation. Based on these findings, this thesis examined three different types of theories to explain the changes in the political culture of university students. First, demand-side theories that focus on underlying socioeconomic changes to explain changes in the political culture were used to analyse the changes in the reasons for political participation and the changes in the political socialization process. Second, intermediary-side theories that emphasise the role of media were used to examine the changes in the attitudes towards the media and the experience of latent political participation. Finally, supply-side theories that focus on the supply of politics and governance were used to explain the changes in the other elements of political culture. Close examination into the workings of democracy in South Korea since the democratic transition in 1987 revealed that there were indications of cartelisation of the political party system, which explains the low levels of political trust and perceived political efficacy reported by current university students.

The focus of this study is the political dynamics of the alliance relations between the United States, Japan and South Korea during the Cold War period. It proposes the concept of "triangular alliance security system" (TASS) as a new theoretical framework for the understanding of intra-alliance politics in Northeast Asia. It identifies the different perspectives on regional relations of the US, Japan and South Korea and it argues that the main operational principle of the US in its dealings with Korea at that time was active intervention to democratise the latter's polity, whilst the Japanese imperative was defensive intervention to preserve stability and the status quo. It also presents a new body of empirical facts concerning the US and Japanese interventions in South Korea's regime transition during 1979 and 1980, utilising primary materials from US, Japanese and South Korean sources and in-depth interviews with diplomatic actors and policy-makers. The empirical findings concerning Japanese intervention in the South Korean regime challenge conventional views of Japanese foreign policy. They suggest a much more active role for Japan in the emergence of the regime of Gen. Chun Doo-hwan, whilst the Carter administration was increasingly preoccupied with the Iran hostage crisis.

The thesis examines the political economy of trade policy reform in post-apartheid South Africa. It challenges mainstream accounts of contemporary trade policy in South Africa, which have advanced a solely economic rationale to explain the policy choices made by the ANC governments since 1994. The thesis argues that, far more than these accounts concede, international and domestic political economy considerations have also played a central part in the ANC governments' calculations to undertake trade reform to the degree it has. Trade reform in South Africa has been the linchpin of a global adjustment strategy pursued by the domestic political elites by which they have sought to fulfill South Africa's global, regional and domestic political and economic objectives. At the global level, the South African state has vigorously pursued trade liberalisation in order to shed its past image of international pariah and reintegrate itself into the global economy on the basis of outward-oriented growth. Restoring South Africa's international political respectability has been as important as reversing its economic marginalisation in the international division of labour. At the regional level, the South African state has used trade policy reform as a foreign economic policy tool not only to rebuild political and diplomatic relations with African countries strained during the apartheid era - but also to advance its hegemonic ambitions, particularly in Southern Africa, as well as reinforce the region's ability to engage with the forces of economic globalisation. The extent to which South Africa's regional hegemonic ambitions can be achieved, however, lies ultimately with how adeptly the country can reconcile these regional aspirations with its domestic pressures. At the domestic level, trade reform has been deployed by the decision-making elites not only to lock in the government's austere macroeconomic policy but also to curtail the power of domestic interests that have benefited from trade protectionism in the past. In return for their co-operation, the South African state has allowed these interests, notably business and labour, enhanced institutional representation in economic policymaking. In this sense trade policy has been employed to serve domestic as much as foreign political and economic policy ends.

Fragments of the Moon is a novel set mostly in South Korea, examining relationships between people, interpersonal spaces, architectural spaces and landscape through a cross-cultural context. Matt, a graduate architect from Perth, Australia, finds himself increasingly vulnerable to cultural confusion as he adjusts to life away from his home and friends. Having initially assumed that Seoul's western facade echoes its social dynamic, Matt increasingly discovers that the Confucianism which underpins much of contemporary Korean society makes all relationships far more complex than his assumptions had allowed. Together with a Canadian student who is seeking to find the essence of a different Korea through her investigation of Buddhism, and through meeting diverse Korean characters, readers will discover several of the many facets of contemporary Korean culture. Readers will be encouraged to test the slippery surfaces on which familiar and unfamiliar attitudes to bodies, landscape and created spaces rest. 'Body, Space, Ideas of Home: Cross-cultural Perspectives' (thesis) The thesis examines the interaction of body space, architectural space, landscape, and emotional states in contemporary literary fiction from several cultural perspectives. Bodies, landscapes, and architectural spaces are shown to be devices through which contemporary authors with different cultural backgrounds have expressed character and explored ideas, especially thematic concerns related to cultural or cross-cultural confusion or understanding. Notions of 'feeling at home' and 'being alien' are investigated through the work of authors who either have a cross-cultural heritage (e.g. Jhumpa Lahiri a Bengali/American), or who write about a culture which is not their own (e.g. Dianne Highbridge, an Australian writing about Japan). Several chosen authors explore the relationships between the spiritual and the physical, the metaphysical and the corporeal. These elements are particularly highlighted when examining the narratives of Tim Winton (The Riders, 1994) and Simone Lazaroo (The World Waiting To Be Made, 1994); and two of Japan's most popular writers, Haruki Murakami (Norwegian Wood, 2000) and Banana Yoshimoto (Lizard, 1995). For some writers, this exploration of spaces forms the focal point of their work; for others, it is an important facet of their narrative world, which helps to ground their writing for contemporary readers whose own backgrounds must also influence their understandings.

La recherche s’interroge sur les principaux aspects de l’articulation entre le commerce et la ville et démontre comment interagissent la transformation de la société et la mutation des espaces marchands. L’hypothèse centrale est que d’une part ces nouveaux lieux marchands soient formés à partir du contexte local et que d’autre part ces lieux participeraient à une production urbaine spécifique et contribueraient ainsi à une recomposition sociale singulière. Dans ce cadre, la recherche interroge l’histoire locale, les conditions sociales, économiques, juridiques et culturelles comme matrice principale et s’appuie sur l’exemple des centres commerciaux verticaux à Séoul. Large multifunctional urban equipment, displaying spatial verticality, has a plurality of consumer behavior. The research examines the main aspects of the articulation between the retail and the city and demonstrates how interact the transformation of society and the changing of shopping spaces. The central hypothesis is that on the one hand the new shopping places are formed from the local context and on the other hand these places would participate in a specific urban production and thus contribute to a singular social recomposition. In this framework, the research questions the local history and social, economic, legal, cultural situation as main matrix and is based on the example of vertical shopping centers in Seoul. Through geographic analysis the research addresses three major issues: forms, dynamic and urban practices that bring these shopping places. The questions are also based on the change in scales of analysis: cities, neighborhoods, shopping places and individual. Taking commercial architecture as analysis angle, the research provides new insights for understanding the present morphology of Seoul and also to assess how such urban equipment can contribute to reinvent the city. The thesis also opens up a new perspective on the circulation of retail models in the current context of globalization and the verticalization of urban spaces

The Power in the international arena can be simply defined as the ability of the government of one state to cause the government of another state to do something which the latter otherwise would not choose to do, or to cause the government of another state to refrain from doing something it wants to do, whether by persuasion, coercion, or outright military force. As a result, it is urgent for the state to research nation power. Especially, with the radical change of international situtation, we might as well speed up the development of science and technology, lift our national power.

Josefinas is a luxury brand that sells online globally since its inception. The purpose of this project is to develop online market-penetration strategies for Josefinas to increase sales and brand awareness in the South Korean market. An internal analysis was developed to assess the competitive potential of the firm’s resources and capabilities, and the firm’s internal strengths and weaknesses. An analysis of the market was also performed to understand the external factors that directly affect the company as a market player. Finally, this project suggests different market-penetration strategies for the company to meet its business goals.

The application of information technology, media and Internet in order to expand information and worldwide communication in diplomacy is called digital diplomacy. In recent years, many governments all over the world, such as Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have used digital diplomacy in their foreign affairs. Three research questions were asked: a) What are the strengths when conducting digital diplomacy? b) What are the weaknesses when conducting digital diplomacy? and, c) What should a nation consider when conducting digital diplomacy? Through a six-week observation and monitoring of these six countries’ websites and Facebook pages, this research aimed to figure out the strengths and weaknesses when conducting digital diplomacy by using Selim’s adaptation of Cowan and Arsenault’s three layer-rubric of monologue (websites), dialogue (Facebook pages) and collaboration (website). It was revealed that all websites, in differing levels, met the criteria of monologue properties of accessibility and visibility, accuracy and credibility, authority, coverage and currency, interactivity, orientation, navigability. For dialogue, all websites, again, in different levels, met the criteria of accessibility and visibility, accuracy and credibility, authority, coverage and currency. Although frequent updates of Facebook page statuses were observed, in terms of interaction, not much interaction between the public and the governments was observed. For collaboration, only the United States has met this criterion through a website design but there was no activity observed. It was recommended that countries should continue to improve the operation of digital diplomacy, especially for the dialogue layer.

M-Commerce promises to change the way consumer interact with brands and products. The majority of the consumers in South Korea have had experience mobile commerce for purchasing products and services. They usually spend as much time on each mobile transaction as they buy products or services on the online stores. Mobile Commerce market in South Korea has had more than doubled in values comparing to other countries since 2010. Nowadays, it represents approximately one-third of part of web-based transactions. Using smartphones to purchase products and services already has become a part of life. About two thirds of the population has done so at least once, up from fewer than half. Need to add how long ago? This study’s focus is on the potential impact and factors that can sustain the growth of mobile commerce market in South Korea. It also attempts to summarize the key points and basic concepts of M-Commerce.
