A smart student attendance system (SSAS) is presented in this paper. The system is divided into two phases: hardware and software. The Hardware phase is implemented based on Arduino's camera while the software phase is achieved by using image processing with face recognition depended on the cross-correlation technique. In comparison with traditional attendance systems, roll call, and sign-in sheet, the proposed system is faster and more reliable (because there is no action needed by a human being who by its nature makes mistakes). At the same time, it is cheaper when compared with other automatic attendance systems. The proposed system provides a faster, cheaper and reachable system for an automatic smart student attendance that monitors and generates attendance report automatically.

Attendance monitoring has strategic importance for every organization. It has shifted from utilizing paper-based attendance monitoring to biometrics, radio-frequency identification, Bluetooth and smart technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, or face recognition technology. Tempus is an automated attendance monitoring system that uses face recognition technology for input, real-time IoT capabilities for processing, and portability of mobile platforms for output. It has hardware and software components. The core of the hardware component is Raspberry Pi 3, which serves as a communication medium between the camera sensor and the information system. Tempus uses Haar Cascade for facial detection and Linear Binary Pattern Histogram (LBPH) for facial recognition. The software component is further divided into two: 1) the information system for administrators, an attendance monitoring which allows encoding of data, creating new user accounts, managing schedules, recording attendance, and generating reports; and 2) mobile platform for end-users, the teachers, that is provided for communication and notification purposes only.

Science and technology are experiencing very rapid development, one of them in the field of web applications whose growth has been increasing rapidly. Staffing Department of Universitas Palangka Raya has used applications to manage employee data, one of them is the employee attendance list. However, the management is still not efficient because staff from the staffing department cannot directly enter employee attendance status such as leave, permission, and illness directly on attendance data processors because they have to wait for data retrieval from the electronic attendance machine at the end of the month so that the process of making attendance recapitulation runs slowly. Software development in generating a file of the attendance data of Universitas Palangka Raya employees using the Waterfall software development method. The first step is to carry out a needs analysis of the system created, including library research, data collection, consultation, and design. Based on this analysis, the system design was created that uses Data Flow Diagrams, and Entity Relationship Diagrams, as the system design that will be created. The next step is writing the program code. In writing program code, the programming languages used are HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as interface designs supported by PHP and MySQL programming languages for data storage and exchange. In the next step, testing is done to test the functionality of the application that has been made using the black box method. This software will be a tool to generate files on attendance data for Universitas Palangka Raya employees.

Aim This study's aim was to assess whether the use of Short Message Service (SMS) text reminders sent to patients prior to their dental appointments improved attendance rates for two dentists at a dental access centre in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. Method Automated SMS text reminders were set up through practice management software at Kirkcaldy Dental Access Centre. Two audits, using a research methodology, were then performed. Failure to attend appointments with the two dentists at 150 consecutive appointments was assessed before and after implementing the SMS text reminders. The null hypothesis that SMS reminders do not improve attendance rates at the dental access centre was tested. The Yates’ corrected chi-square test was applied to the resulting data, with the level for statistical significance set at P<0.05. Results Patients readily accepted the text messages and found them to be non-intrusive. Failed attendance at appointments for the two dentists was reduced from 46/150 (31%) before the SMS text reminders were introduced to 21/150 (14%) after its introduction ( P=0.00088). Thus the use of SMS text reminders resulted in a statistically significant reduction in the number of failed attendances at appointments for the two dentists. Conclusions In this preliminary study, SMS appointment reminders reduced the number of failed appointments significantly. They can provide an automated, non-intrusive, and cost-effective method of improving patient attendance at dental appointments.

Taking attendance in classes having large numbers of students is a time consuming task. Most teachers would rather not do so in order to increase instruction time. An alternative way for taking attendance is developed in this project. This thesis describes a Four-Station-Microcomputer-Based Student Logger (FSAL) device designed and constructed for solving this problem. With this portable device, four students can input their identification codes at the same time. Approximately ten seconds per student is needed to register their attendance. In this manner, a class of one-hundred students could indicate their attendance in less than five minutes.Presented herein is the background information about the microcomputer, the hardware design and the software developed for the FSAL device. This device is located in Department of Physics and Astronomy and is planned to be used in the courses ASTRO 100 and PHYCS 100.

Today we use an obsolete way of handling information regarding which student and/or teacher is attending which class/lab/seminar, attendance is written down on a piece of paper and collected so that an administrator can manually enter this information to some data processing system. This method is far from optimal and demands a lot of time and resources from administrators, teachers, and students. Correct gathering of attendance is important since it is required for specific parts of some courses. We propose to automate the collection of this attendance data, thus enabling students and teachers to simply swipe their NFC-enabled KTH access card in order to enter their name on an attendance list. This will be achieved by creating an application that adds a student to an attendance list by reading information using a NFC/RFID reader and mapping the card’s UID to a KTHID (a locally unique identifier used within the university) using a database. The resulting attendance list should be formatted in such a fashion that it can easily be uploaded to systems such as KTH Social and Daisy. Ideally these systems will be extended so that instructors/teachers can use this attendance list to automatically create the appropriate entries in these systems to record the student’s participation in the indicated activity – in the process avoiding a lot of manual labor and improving the accuracy of the process. An additional problem is that there is currently no unified system that connects the KTH access card database (BRAVIDA) to the KTH LDAP database (which stores information about KTH students, faculty, and staff). This means that each student’s access card UID must manually be added to a database together with the student’s KTHID. However, once this database entry has been made, we can then map from a card number to a KTHID (or the reverse). The purpose behind and expected result of this thesis is a functional prototype of an application that creates an attendance list by reading data from the student or teacher’s access cards using a NFC reader. This will hopefully stimulate further digitalization in KTH and also encourage more courses to utilize such access card based attendance lists. The result should be less manual effort by students, faculty, and staff, as well as more accurate and timely filing of attendance information for courses.

It was the purpose of this study to determine what effect intrinsic motivation in software programs using graphics and non-graphics has on the achievement, attitudes, attendance and depth-of-involvement of 65 underachieving students. The study was conducted in the natural school setting over the period of a semester. Data was collected on three groups, the control group (n = 33), the alternate treatment group in which students were exposed to CAI without the use of graphics as a part of the instruction, and the experimental group in which students were exposed to CAI with graphics for at least 20 minutes three times per week. An ANCOVA was done on the pre and posttest Math Computation scores of the SAT and the pre and posttest weighted raw scores of the Motivation for Schooling subtest of the SAM. An ANOVA was done on attendance data and a measure of depth-of-involvement defined as time-on-task.;Results indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in the academic achievement, attitudes or attendance among the three groups. However, gains in academic achievement did approach statistical significance. Results for the measure of time-on-task did achieve statistical significance indicating greater involvement with graphic programming.;It was concluded that the use of CAI with or without graphics does not substantially improve the achievement, attitudes or attendance of underachieving students significantly more than other intensive remedial instructional techniques.

This mixed methods study was designed to examine the effectiveness of the HearBuilder Phonological Awareness software program on the acquisition of phonological awareness in African-American preschool children. Additionally, the researcher investigated the relationship between the independent variables of student engagement, student motivation, student behavior, and student attendance on the dependent variable of acquisition of phonological awareness as measured by the gain score. Descriptive statistical analyses were used to describe, summarize, and interpret the data collected. After examining the aforesaid variables, the researcher found there were no significant relationships between the gain scores and any of the independent variables. But there were useful significant relationships between the independent variables of student motivation, student engagement, and student attendance. The researcher also examined the differences between the pretest and posttest for the experimental and control groups combined. A significant difference was found between these two tests suggesting that the HearBuilder Phonological Awareness software program was effective in improving student’s performance in the experimental group. There was no significant difference, however, between pre and posttest based on gender. So while one can see the effectiveness in the HearBuilder Phonological Awareness program based on the difference between the pre and posttest, the reason does not lie in the variables selected as independent variables, but in other variables not included in the study such as instructional strategies. Finally, the researcher investigated the difference in the performance of the experimental group and the control group as measured by the mean gain scores. Key results revealed that the experimental group scored higher than the control group on the HearBuilder Phonological Awareness posttest as measured by the gain score. Early Childhood administrators can utilize this investigation as a vehicle to advance their instructional leadership skills and teachers can improve their pedagogical practices.

The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between Science teachers attending seven types of teacher professional development (TpD) programme and the influence these have on their use of computer software in the teaching of Science. This research focuses on five of the seven programmes that are essential for the improvement of Science performance and assessment results in South African schools. Teachers’ mastery of Science is not exclusively dependent on their depth of understanding of the content, but also on their understanding of and expertise in pedagogy, the curriculum, assessment practices and Information Communication Technology (ICT). The use and role of ICT in teaching have without a doubt become a non-negotiable aspect of education. However, integration of technology in education faces multiple hurdles. The greatest hurdle is the ability of the teacher to use ICT effectively. For teachers to use technology effectively they need to possess a range of skills and knowledge that allows them to achieve the objective of effective integration of ICT. Teachers need to be skilled to use computers in all aspects of their work. The focus in this research falls on the five TpD programmes that teachers attended; they include Science content, Science pedagogy, the Science curriculum, ICT and assessment in Science. This is secondary data analysis research that makes use of data collected from the South African component of the TIMSS 2011 assessment. The data was derived from the Grade 9 Science teacher questionnaires and focuses on two key variables: (1) professional development programmes attended, and (2) the use of computer software to teach Science. Data analysis was conducted at two levels: descriptive statistics to give the sample teachers a defined background and structure, and inferential statistics to surmise the relationship between teachers attending the various TpD programmes and their use of computer software to teach Science. The findings from this research show that attending academic TpD programmes is important to get teachers to use computers in the teaching of Science and that training to ensure mastery of basic ICT skills cannot be over-emphasised.

This chapter describes a software platform that is designed to facilitate the integrity of Web-based exams and assessments. The purpose of the chapter is to share the success of the approach and to promote its further development and use in the e-learning environment. The custom software application, which is named eTAP (electronic Test Administration Platform), has been developed by the author for use in his own courses and is designed in response to his perceived needs in this setting. In addition to e-cheating mitigation, the software addresses the issues of real-time attendance monitoring and activity logging, while providing a well-structured, consistent experience for the students and for the instructor. The assessment platform provided by eTAP uses a software sandbox mechanism to control the examination process. That is, once the application is started, the examinee is limited to specific sanctioned computer functionality and is restricted to a well-defined, relevant region of the Web.

Researchers have identified active collaborative learning and membership in learning communities as factors that facilitate the engagement of learners. In the reported student engagement study, a commercially available software utility was used to establish such an environment in a computer laboratory. This chapter addresses the following issues: will collaborative learning result in more student engagement and what type of software will support such activity? The collected data includes anonymous survey responses, mean marks for assessable components, and tutorial attendance figures for 2011 (pre-intervention) and 2012 (post-intervention) and 2013 (modified content with post-intervention style delivery). Freeform responses in the anonymous student survey were positive towards the experience. In 2012 with respect to those of 2011, mean assignment and tutorial participation marks for the students improved, while those for other assessable components appeared to have worsened. Student engagement, as reflected in tutorial attendance and assignment marks, were better in 2012. In 2013, the study was repeated with the focus of the tutorials changed to group problem solving with the tutorial participation reflecting student contributions during such sessions. The mean marks for the exam, the laboratory participation and for the course improved over those for 2012 and 2011, respectively. The other means slightly improved over those for 2011 but were slightly worse for those for 2012.

Performance management systems are tools that measure employee performance in terms of meaningful standards and goals, in a manner that aligns individual behaviors and efforts with organizational success. The advantages of employee performance management (EPM) systems are widely recognized today. EPM systems have been implemented by thousands of companies in order to obtain greater strategic value from their human resources (HR) and their HR divisions. As a result, EPM is viewed as a top priority by most HR managers and, according to a report issued by Lawson Software in 2006, is observed as being more important than other HRIS applications including payroll, time and attendance, benefits administration, online recruiting, and regulatory compliance (Business Wire, 2006c). According to a report issued by Forrester, corporate use of electronic performance and talent management systems is growing at a robust rate of 20% (Business Wire, 2006b).

The primary objective of this case study is to discuss a retail business information system illustrating an e-business integration example among a biometric attendance system, a surveillance system, and a point-of-sale system. Using a service-oriented architecture allows businesses to build on top of legacy applications or construct new applications in order to take advantage of the power of Web services. Over the past years, Web services have finally developed enough to allow such basic architectures to be built. Each of the components in the system will be designed and developed using a service-oriented architecture that clearly illustrates how such cutting-edge systems can be put together. By designing these components in such a fashion, this example will focus on applying service-oriented development and integration techniques to the retail sector. The result of this project will be an integrated system that can be used by businesses everywhere to learn how their organizations can benefit from serviceoriented architecture. Also, the application of the service-oriented development and integration to systems that were previously stand-alone and heterogeneous is discussed. All previous experiences in object-oriented architectures and design methodology are naturally streamlined with the service-oriented architecture, supporting the loose coupling of software components.

HPV - short for human papillomavirus - is a virus capable of infecting the mucous membranes and skin, being the most prevalent involved on Sexually Transmitted Diseases and the main cause of Cervical Cancer. However, reaching out to and inviting all eligible people for cervical cancer screening and vaccination against HPV is a difficult task. A possible solution is the use of social inducement and gamification through modern means of communication, which may encourage the attendance of unscreened or unvaccinated people on related programs. Therefore, this paper presents the development of a serious game for the Android platform designed for children and preteens with the purpose of foresting HPV and Cervical Cancer awareness, informationseeking, and communication, thus possibly increasing the number of vaccinated and screened people.
