Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn front of growing ecological concerns and widening social inequalities, what place do associations occupy? At the crossroads of the desire to “do things differently” and the constraints of the dominant economy, what does commitment to associative work produce? Which actors enchant associative work and for why? How does this enchantment impact the value of the work accomplished? Does enchantment operate on all social positions? When is this spell likely to break? To answer these questions, we conducted a qualitative survey, by participant observation and interviews, in ten recycling centers in order to understand the different ways of relating to this associative work within a sector which is currently being structured.Through this survey, we question the function of symbolic economies within an “economic economy” (Bourdieu, 2017), capitalist and neoliberal through the work carried out in associations. The high degree of abstraction of these questions does not distance us from the concrete and material dimensions of these issues. Therefore, the question of work remained the cornerstone of theoretical reasoning, its starting point, its markers, and its finish line. The thesis shows the growing mobilization of associations in the moralization of public problems. With the development of their role as “moral entrepreneurs”, they relay forms of individualizing responsibility, both in terms of ecological “awareness” and that of “activation” to employment. This moralization tends to make associative work invisible, which contributes to facilitating its devaluation and appropriation in the form of “avoided social and ecological costs” to the neoliberal state and businesses. The thesis also illustrates the way in which the lucrative private sector benefits from this moralization through a distatization and a commodification of general interest, which gradually allows it to claim a monopoly on symbolic capital. However, qualitative research has made it possible to bring to light reluctance as well as some attempts of resistance to these logics. While refraining from idealizing its weight and scope, it aims to fuel reflection in favor of a reappropriation of associative work by its workers

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis PHD thesis analyses the personal care aid, especially as developed in non-profit organizations. The aim of the first part is to build the research object. The first chapter recounts the slow development of personal care aid as an activity sector. The second chapter shows the difficult conditions of` care work. The third chapter analyses why the law to develop home care services, changed the whole sector of personal care aid. The second part develops some "conceptual tools" to enlighten the problems shown in the first part. In chapter 4, three types of relationships that exist in this sector are conceptualized-like a triangle: the service relationship, the employment relationship, and the work p relationship. The relationships that appear in this triangle in the context of non-profitmaking organizations are analyzed in chapter 5, considering that they are part of` a system. The goal of the third part is to analyze the stakes and the development of the sector of` non-profitmaking organizations, taking into account the three identified relationships. The chapter 6 shows why the work and employment relationships are inseparable. The chapter 7 analyzes how specific the work and service relationships are in the non-profit organizations in the field of personal aid care. In a moving context, chapter 8 deals with the necessary balance between the different relationships

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe Third Sector Structures have developed a form of Industrial Relations, linked to the Social Movement History; based on the evolution of different Cooperative groups; and adapted over the business cycle. This Relation System improves the well-being of individuals and Groups, it has evolved to suit social needs and to cover various risks. Abbé Pierre, founder of the Emmaus Movement has created a Structure providing supportive environment, social benefits and work for homeless people. This structure is similar to old forms of Charity and Cooperative structure, "Communities". It deals with old economic activities, those of "Ragpickers". Emmaüs Communities practice "Flexicurity" working policies. Indeed, they have staffs, volunteers, but also a third type of worker: the Companion. The Companion is both Social beneficiary and Worker in the structure that provides him Social benefits. Communities are both supportive and productive structures, dealing with Industrial and Welfare requirements. The comparison between France, Spain and the UK shows the evolution of Industrial Relations into the Communities, within different economical contexts. The Community’ Strategy evolves according to their positions on the Market. "The far, a Community is from Emmaus Movement’s Ideology, the more it adopts market principles". This flexibility determines the Career path of Companions. It conditions the Communities Welfare and Solidarity System

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis aims at exploring to what extent globalization, through its diversecomponents, impacts the health of European workers. In a first part, we expose the socio-economicconsequences of this multi-faceted phenomenon. In a second part, we show that internationalcompetition, one of the essential components of globalization, is a risk factor for non-skilledworkers. Nevertheless, individual and organizational factors are the most likely to explain mentaland physical disorders prevalence in the population as a whole. Globalization also implies newpractices linked to firms’ internationalization strategy, another component of globalization. Weunderline that workers must acquire the skills to stay attractive in a constantly changing worldand they do not find much support in their companies. In a third part, we show that globalizationenhances the surge of the service sector in industrialized countries. In addition, the leanmanagement is implemented in those sectors and competitive pressure increases. These changesimpact the way the work is performed. Within this context, the health of workers deterioratesbecause they are exposed to changing risk factors, among them: intense of work related tointerpersonal relationships. Finally, we find that the Corporate Social Responsibility comes as ananswer to improve workers’ health and as a consequence, firms’ social and financial performance

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe effects of temporal factors on worker's behavior are analyzed for three classes of temporal conditions : temporal requirements of the task (machine-paced work, time sharing), variability of human functionning (circadian rythmicity), interactions between time of work and off-the-job life (especially concerning shiftwork). Worker's responses to time requirements implies coordination of analyses at three levels : precise identification of situation's parameters for temporal aspects but also for psychological functions ; evaluation of importance of performance as regard time criteria and cost associated to success ; strategies of regulation used by the subject according to the balance between risks of failure and workload. Furthermore analysis of the activity under time pressure must be conducted in the frame work of the global system including work and out-of-work activities. Also social meaning of work needs effective coordination between analysis of worker behaviorin the line of man-machine system-and analysis of worker motivation concerning the activity under temporal constraints. Systematic articulation of the frameworks of ergonomics and social psychology is necessary for the progress of research on workers' response to temporal factors in work situation

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe nonprofit organizations (NPO), in spite of their diversity, have tried to find a unity and become a "sector". This has been realized in the early eighties. At the beginning they were only considered for their civil and social role. Now, they are valued for their economic activities and for their ability to create job opportunities. A long time is required for the transformation of unpaid activities into salaried jobs, and of a NPO into a firm. Those changes are not obvious, but the NPO follow specific patterns of employment and of working time which help for their evolution. They have also an ability to use hidden, local and human resources that they know how to use in a flexible way. In order to realize this change, they have to find external resources (private and or public foundings), to rationalize their way of working, to lead permanent activities, and to extend their field to an anonymous audience. . . But professionalized NPO cannot be a regular firm as it doesn't renounce to its initial aims

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation aims to investigate how professionals working for feminist non-profit organisations build a specific work ethic. Based on predominantly qualitative fieldwork, this research first describes and analyses the day-to-day work performed by these professionals, highlighting their significant skills and resourcefulness, as well as the constant learning process in which they are engaged. Emotions both constitute an important part of the counselling tasks and shape a feminist rationality. The analysis then focusses on the professionals’ careers, both in terms of work and militancy. Such analysis allows us to understand how these professionals are able to dedicate so much of their time and energy to their work, as well as how they manage to find a work-life balance. Lastly, we try to show how feminism can inform specific forms of management, by looking at the example of self-managing organisations. This fieldwork and complete study has led us to the conclusion that the work ethic of these feminist non-profit organisations realises itself within three specific spheres : the sphere of counselling in which the ethic of feminist intervention is put into practice ; the sphere of the professionals' relationship with their work and career where the work ethic as members of a feminist non-profit organisation helps them deal with sometimes modest labour conditions ; and finally the sphere of politics and feminism as a social movement where the ethic of day-to-day feminism comes into play. The dissertation aims to show how feminist professionals try to reinvent labour within feminist organisations, despite significant pressure. It also reveals the specificities of a feminist ethos shared by a wider women's movement, while at the same time proposing an innovative approach of the concept of work ethos, that could be prove useful for the study of other professions

Prevention has become a key concept in labor law, without having been subject to analyzes assessing the exact scope. To deepen links between labor law and prevention, a categorization of the main expressions of the labor law in prevention may first be proposed. It highlights the expansion of prevention in the field of labor law. The different risks inherent in the employment relationship are concerned and prevention today move towards consolidation, to determine how best to avoid or limit them. The various legal schemes enabling the implementation of the prevention in labor law can also be explored, as their legal regime reveals a certain unity. It is a right to prevention at workplace that can be identified. Its distinguishing feature is it involvement of different actors in the employment relationship, whose roles are organized so as to ensure effectiveness in prevention at the workplace

The new committee is given by law the status of a workers' representative body, which is autonomous, required for establishments with 50 or more employees, and the members of which are granted time for delegation and protected against dismissals. Contrary to the idea backing the bill, the health, safety and working conditions committee is not the only possible speaker to management, as far as working conditions are concerned. Some interferences may occur with the works council, personnel delegates or the so-called expression groups. . . The interconnection between the various means of consultation (direct or not) at work was not established by law. Even though the law-maker denied the committee the right to stop work on security grounds, he gave to this body the possibility to put into question the authority and leading power of the manager. Yet, he refused to consider all responsabilities consecutive to the powers thus granted

Thanks to a qualitative inquiry led with 55 executives in four big companies of high technologies, the thesis shows that this assent rests on a plurality of registers of action such as the different interests carried in the work or still the forms of resignation in front of destabilizing aspects. But especially, in the complexity of the meanings granted by the executives to their work, the research identifies completely ambivalent representations when it is question of autonomy, performance, disparity of gender or of economy. We qualify these representations of social imagination because they disguise as attractive elements various dimensions susceptible to generate constraints, without neutralizing for all that totally the coercive effect of these last ones

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe aim of this thesis is to understand the way people who suffer from multiple sclerosis get involved in a charity organization and how this affects their own biographical work. This research combines two concepts : « organizational involvement » and « biographical work », developed by Anselm Strauss and Juliet Corbin in 1988. The methodology uses 30 individual interviews with people who belong to different French Aid Organizations dealing with disease - "Association des Paralyses de France" (APF), "Nouvelle Association Française des Scleroses en Plaques" (NAFSEP), "Association SEP Montrouge 92", or who were being treated at the Hospital Leopold Bellan in Paris, France-. 10 people were interviewed twice and asked to report their experience in writing. 4 group interviews and 23 group observations were also conducted. The subjects who enter into a « career » of an individual affected by multiple sclerosis are led to elaborate a biographical work. This biographical work is conducted within different environments, among them an Aid Organization. Given the specific development of Charities dedicated to multiple sclerosis in France, the way the subjects get involved takes different forms. Several portraits represent the various types of behaviour from growing participation and steady involvement to reluctance and organization avoidance

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleHow does the identity of discontinuous organizations change? To answer this question, a three-year-long study was conducted in three non-profit performing arts organizations. This study builds on an ethnographic approach based on more than 500 hours of participant observation and 31 interviews to follow real-time interactions in their context. Over a period of several years, the three organizations evolve very differently: in the first case original identity is reasserted; in the second one identity is renewed; and in the third one it is reinvented. Given the centrality of music to the performing arts organizations studied, naming these three identity evolutions the theme; the variation; and the improvisation seemed apposite. In the three cases, identity beliefs’ new meanings are formulated by organizational members. These new meanings are not systematically adopted. The study identified three mechanisms allowing members to reassert the original meaning: distancing; disenchanting; and rejecting. The study argues that activation of these mechanisms answers a need for protection of some organisational members experiencing difficulties in the change process. By showing how discontinuous organizations can rely on discontinuity as a resource for identity work, this doctoral work also offers elements of comprehension for managers of such organizations

Associations thos find themselves in an innovative situation, in which voluntary and paid workers work side by side. In order to understand the importance and meaning attributed to work in a sector where employment is not a priority, we have studied the case/representation of the work carried out by associative actors (voluntary and salaried) in a MJC (Association for youth and culture) which is unked to "l'Education Populaire". Work in such a structure takes on its true meaning and represents the innovation of an socio-economical factor within a society which is suffering from an employment "crisis"

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of my thesis is to assess the consequences of the rapidly expanding use of private companies, e.g. temporary employment agencies, in an area – child welfare – that hitherto had always been not-for-profit. Confronted with the externalisation and outsourcing of public services, the thesis proposes a joint analysis of the transformations of social work and the new forms of employment. In child welfare centres, the hiring of less-well-trained personnel on lower pay, or the recruitment of temp workers, freelancers or staff on short-term contracts, reveals a number of contradictions about the true nature of social work consisting, for one thing, in limiting the precarious situation of beneficiaries. Based on a four-year ethnographic survey comprising interviews with persons ranging from child welfare staff to managers and heads of social structures, combined with the observations made as a specialised child educator in two child welfare centres, this research examines the phenomenon of the casualization of employment affecting in tandem, but not symmetrically, both the children in need of support and social workers. At the crossroads of the sociology of social work, employment and social relations, the thesis presents, 1) the new ways of managing employment that are taking root as part of a general reconfiguration of social policies and 2), an analysis of the work of social services seen through the prism of the new forms of employment referred to above

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAs for any living being, people develop their personalities and evolve by interacting with their environment. Gainful employment constitutes a determining factor of this interaction since, being a source of fulfilment but also of stress, it can have an enduring effect on the physical and mental health of an individual. The pathogenic nature of work is legally acknowledged through concepts of professional hazards and, more recently, of difficult working conditions. Closely linked to changes in working practices, it is amongst the current issues arising from the dialectics concerning retirement and the improvement of working conditions. While the difficulty of working conditions is legally linked to the ending of working life and life expectancy, we should now move on from this approach. Blending the notions of health, wellbeing and hardship at work, this notion displays above all an evolution in the way of conceiving the protection of the working individual. Further deliberation needs to be given to definition, prevention and penalties in the light of accompanying financial and human considerations. A protean notion, both subjective and multidisciplinary, the difficulty of working conditions should be approached independently and requires the coordinated intervention of a number of actors, with the employer and employee at the centre

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn an increasingly competitive economic environment and marked by a succession of transformations, firms are engaged in series of technological and organizational changes in order to increase their productivity. These changes more often result in changes in the working conditions for employees (e.g. gain autonomy) and they can also sometimes include some risk for their psychological health (satisfaction at work, stress, depression, tension, anxiety, … However, these disorders can have a negative impact on the productivity of affected workers as well as that of the other employees playing negatively on their degree of commitment and their identification to the firm. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the impact of technological and organizational change on different indicators of working conditions. Indeed, we will measure the impact of the use of ICT on the satisfaction at work of French employees in 2006. In our work, we use a special measure of satisfaction at work, namely the satisfaction with salary. Moreover, an indicator of psychosocial risks is built based on the recommendations of the Gollac Committee (2009). Based on this indicator, we propose a non-parametric evaluation of organizational and technological change on psychosocial risks of 2006 employees. The organizational changes and computerisation conducted survey data in 2006 are mobilized for this work

In a first part, the main microeconomic determinants of child labour supply – the weakness of returns to education, the weakness of parental resources linked with no access to credit market, the weakness of parental altruism – are introduced in a dynastic model. In the second part, some national Latin American household surveys (Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela) are used to confront the theory with the facts. Finally, the analysis of child labour is led on a macroeconomic level and some public policy implications are deducted. It is shown that a public intervention may lead the economy on a more equal and better for poor children growth path

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAbsenteeism, which has long been overshadowed by the increase of unemployment, has become again a real cause for worry for companies and public states. At this prospect, the analysis of the determining factors of absenteeism arouses a particular interest. This research aims at several objectives: draw up a multidisciplinary state-of-the-art of the literature on absenteeism, devise a research model, test it by means of a quantitative analysis based on the Sumer national survey and a case study carried out in a railway maintenance organization. We have drawn six different approaches of absenteeism from this literature review (economic, societal, individual, organizational, medical and integrative). We have focused on the determining factors connected to work organization, working conditions and job resources. Actually, their explicative power seemed significant though being tested in a rather small number of studies. Therefore we have built an explicative model of absenteeism grounded on the organizational approach while integrating as well mediator variables coming from attitudinal (job satisfaction and intent to stay) and medical (occupational health) approaches. On the basis of the quantitative analysis, we have shown that some organizational variables (such as work density, responsibility level, industrial constraint, absence of job resources, tension with the public), whose influence on absenteeism has never (or hardly ever) been tested before, have a definite effect on absenteeism. Our qualitative study supplements our data analysis since it allows testing our model in a dynamic dimension while analyzing the simultaneous effects of a work reorganization and an improvement of the working conditions (as regards physical strenuousness and work place physical environment). Our study stresses the essential role of work organization, beyond an improvement to the physical environment of the work place or a reduction in the physical strenuousness. The results of quantitative and qualitative analysis allow us to suggest preventive measures to absenteeism for the attention of human resource managers

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe objective of this Ph.D. Dissertation is to disentangle some of the many interrelationships between work, employment and health, mostly in a longitudinal approach. Establishing causal relationships between these three concepts is not easy, as many statistical biases generally undermine estimates, including selection biases and the three classical sources of endogeneity. This thesis proposes in a first chapter to study the effect of a mental health shock on workers’ ability to remain in employment. The second chapter explores the possible sources of heterogeneity in the role of working conditions on health status by examining the effects of variable early-career exposures in terms of intensity and nature on the onset of chronic diseases. Finally, the third chapter deals with the end of the career and the decision to retire. The French panel data from the Health and Professional Path (Sip, Santé et Itinéraire Professionnel) survey with more than 13,000 respondents is used in this work, as well as several methodologies in order to take into account endogeneity biases, in particular methods relying on instrumental variables and methods for public policy evaluation (matching and difference-in-differences). The results confirm that employment, health and work are intimately related, with clear consequences of health shocks on employment and, conversely, a preponderant role of work on the determination of health status

The state, with its differentiated modes of interventions, anticipates two types of employment : permanent and temporary. Only the former is subject to regulation. The fixed duration employment contract (contrat a duree determinee or C. D. D. ) is provided for but not regulated. Legislation has not provided for cases of restrictive recourse to C. D. D. Differing employment practices correspond to this institutional cacuum. The C. D. D. Is like an empty shell : it is a multi-purpose instrument for personnel management, and its use corresponds to different types of needs. Trade unions contribute in a passive manner to this development through their lack of action on the legel framework regulating employment. Thus, certain stakes such as law, employment and union rights are left to the state and employers

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis analyses the changings occured in the eighties in the protuguese finantial system and their consequences, studying the technology, the organization and the working social conditions according to the strategies implemented by the different banks. Comparing two portuguese banks, one belonging to the public sector and the other to the private sector, we have made a research covering a sample of tellers from several agencies in lisbon. We have established a minor importance due to technology and a major importance given to work organization and human resources management models in the attitudes of t he tellers. These two elements determine the forms assumed by the working social conditions in each bank. The different ways banks operate in the market, influenced by enterprise cultures and the inheritance of the past, lead to the adoption of specific work organization models and technological choices

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleCan Working conditions generate attentional problems for some employees? This issue is currently at the heart of research in the field of work psychology, ergonomics and applied cognitive psychology. During this thesis, we tried to understand exactly what factors might cause these problems. We have divided our approach into two parts: (i) the laboratory study of the links between interruptions and cognitive abilities, and (ii) the study of working conditions and their repercussions on cognition. Scientific publications from interruptions literature are becoming more numerous. In particular, they experienced a boom in the early 2000s. However, many questions still persist, as the real effect of interruptions on the main task and the various factors which potentiates this effect. Moreover, the specific cognitive processes involved during interruptions have not all been studied. Therefore, we proposed a new formal definition of the phenomenon of interruption and a new research framework to unify the current field of study. Also, we conducted several experimental studies to answer some questions still present. Together, our results suggest that interruptions are usually deleterious regarding the performance of the primary task, and that some cognitive processes unsuspected to this day might help their repercussions. Secondly, we studied the impact of specific working conditions on attentional and cognitive complaints. First, we built a new test able to detect these changes on a cognitive level by carrying out several construction and validation studies of a new scale. Then we used a sample of several hundred employees to draw conclusions on the predictors of these difficulties. Overall, gender, social status, time spent in shared working environment, the frequency of interruptions and several aspects of new technologies may be the cause of attentional difficulties at work

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleOur work deals with the juridical processing of working time in the French speaking countries of black Africa. This theme was chosen because the steps taken for its alteration have always been considered in the legal, statutory and contractual text as being a full part of the problem of working environment. Up to a recent time, labor law in some African countries was based on the 15 December 1952 legislation. But from 1960, the African lawmakers have tried to replace the 1952 code by new codes. These latters went over again the 1952 code dispositions about working time without any significant improvement. So, a narrow relation does exist between the 15 December 1952 legislation and the new codes which were inspired by the French law. Must we let the African legislations elaborate upon the basis of the French system or on the contrary, must we bring some amendments including on fundamental points? To answer that alternative, we have first of all compared the different sets of regulation about working time problem in the African countries. Our second part is devoted to the "de facto" situation. And we have concluded by the fact that the 1952 code has not been elaborated in view of the African economic and social situation but of the French one. Therefore, a deep gap between the African regulations on working time and their real application appears. The problem of working time in Africa requires a more careful thought both in their economic and social consequences
