This article offers a response to two questions: Can we reach a consensus in the domain of dynamic assessment? and Do we want to? The brief response to these questions is first: Yes, it may be possible to reach a sufficient degree of consensus that we can offer some guidelines as to what is and what is not “dynamic” about assessment. The response to the latter question of whether we want to or not is a more qualified, “Well sort of, and to some extent, but with a great deal of latitude, flexibility, and room for diversity.” The article goes on to discuss the core concepts of dynamic assessment, what a general consensus might look like (also known as generic model), and, finally, some reference to the exciting developments that have emerged which make me advocate for diversity and flexibility in our model-building.

Before starting teaching, teachers must establish the needs of the learners and this could be done best by determining or recognizing the learning targets which should be clearly stated and there should be matching between the learning targets and the assessment tasks. Learning targets are the interim academic goals that teachers establish for students who are working toward meeting more comprehensive learning standards. Despite the importance of the learning targets in leaning and teaching in general and for assessemnet tasks in particular , most teachers donot realize this or ignore it or may be donot know how to write learning targets and matching them with the assessment tasks. This study is an attempt to present a framework for understanding the importance of learning targets where they play an integral role in teaching and learning and in assessment tasks .The study also tries to draw the intention to an important view which is involving students by sharing them the learning targets and self assessment. Consequently ,the major aims of this study are to : 1.explore the effect of learning targets on assessment tasks and to present a model of writibg learning targets according to Bloom’s cognitive domain and machibg them with the assessment tasks. In order to achieve the aims of the study , the following procedures are going to be followed : 1.carry out theoretical review related to learning targets and assessment ,providing satisfactory definitions and identifying types and the importance of them , 2.survey the most prominent taxonomies for educational targets , 3.investigate the effect of learning targets on assessment tasks, 4.apply Bloom’s taxonomy to write a model of matching learning targets with the assessment tasks. It is hoped that this study will be beneficial to EFL teachers of English language since it deals with two important points that affect the process of learning and teaching :the leaning targets and assessment which fall under applied linguistics.

An assessment of several three-dimensional inviscid turbine aerodynamic computer codes and loss models used at the NASA Lewis Research Center is presented. Five flow situations are examined, for which both experimental data and computational results are available. The five flows form a basis for the evalution of the computational procedures. It was concluded that stator flows may be calculated with a high degree of accuracy, whereas rotor flow fields are less accurately determined. Exploitation of contouring, leaning, bowing, and sweeping will require a three-dimensional viscous analysis technique.

Photosynthesis topic is as a compulsory topic ineducation typically in the second year of secondary high school. There is perception of some students that the photosynthesis topic is difficult to learn by student. This paper will clarify questions such as what assessment does mean, what student misconceptions in photosynthesis are, how teachers deal with student misconceptions, and last, why do teachers, school and curriculum need to change perspective in assessment. Based on the discussion, there are some parts that need to be reaffirmed. The teachers should not just recognize assessment as a formal paper, but in term of perspective and classroom instruction. It should be actualized in teaching-learning that there is no judgement of right and wrong for students in leaning. Thus, dealing with student conception could be difficult for the teacher. The principal way is the teacher needs to be clear on the topic’s planning and negotiate the meaning of all representations used in the classroom. Changing the type of assessments does not just simply mean changing teaching strategies or having appropriate types of assessment tool, but it could be a powerful source when it is integrated in the curriculum.

Geoffrey Hodgson has recently published a book where he wonders why heterodox economics seems to thrive while at the same time losing ground within the most prestigious universities. Although Hodgson considers himself to be a heterodox economist, he complains about the way heterodoxy has been defined by some of its most active thinkers, in particular Frederic Lee and Tony Lawson. Hodgson believes that heterodox economics should be defined neither by a left-leaning ideology nor by critical realism. He argues that too much energy has been devoted to the study of macroeconomics by the Marxist and post-Keynesian brands of heterodox economics, as they left aside what he believes to be the crucial issue of microeconomic behaviour which can be found in behavioural and evolutionary economics. Hodgson further argues that what he considers to be the decline in the impact of heterodox economics is partly due to a lack of quality control. The paper outlines and comments on these various assertions.

The author is also trying to define the possible impact of e-leaning in the development of students' digital competences. In order to conduct this research, the author developed an on-line course called „Creating multimedia eco-logical contents”, using Moodle. Twenty-six tenth grade students of Ante Kuzmanić Medical school participated in the course. While engaging in the course every student had to create a movie using one digital tool, participate in the peer assessment and complete two questionnaires. After the student had presented the movie to his clas-smates, it was evaluated according to previously known assessment criteria. The re-sults of this research indicate the potential benefits of using Moodle in all three as-sessment approaches.

ObjectiveThis study reviewed the news media coverage of statins, seeking to identify specific trends or differences in viewpoint between media outlets and examine common themes.DesignThe study is a content analysis of the frequency and content of the reporting of statins in a selection of the British newsprint media. It involved an assessment of the number, timing and thematic content of articles followed by a discourse analysis examining the underlying narratives. The sample was the output of four UK newspapers, covering a broad-spectrum readership, over a six month timeframe 1 October 2013 to 31 March 2014.ResultsA total of 67 articles included reference to statins. The majority (39, 58%) were reporting or responding to publication of a clinical study. The ratio of negative to positive coverage was greater than 2:1 overall. In the more politically right-leaning newspapers, 67% of coverage was predominantly negative (30/45 articles); 32% in the more left-leaning papers (7/22 articles). Common themes were the perceived ‘medicalisation’ of the population; the balance between lifestyle modification and medical treatments in the primary prevention of heart disease; side effects and effectiveness of statins; pharmaceutical sponsorship and implications for the reliability of evidence; trust between the public and government, institutions, research organisations and the medical profession.ConclusionsNewsprint media coverage of statins was substantially influenced by the publication of national guidance and by coverage in the medical journals of clinical studies and comment. Statins received a predominantly negative portrayal, notably in the more right-leaning press. There were shared themes: concern about the balance between medication and lifestyle change in the primary prevention of heart disease; the adverse effects of treatment; and a questioning of the reliability of evidence from research institutions, scientists and clinicians in the light of their potential allegiances and funding.

Healthy river ecosystem has been acknowledged as the object of river management, which is crucial for the sustainable development of cities. Simple and practical evaluation methods with great precision are necessary for the evaluation of river ecosystem health. Fuzzy system has been widely used in evaluation and decision making for its simple reasoning and the adoption of experts knowledge. However, much artificial intervention decreases the precision. Neural network has a strong ability of self-leaning while it is not good at expressing rule-based knowledge. The T-S fuzzy neural network model combines the advantages of fuzzy system and neural network. In this paper, the T-S fuzzy neural network model was used to establish a river ecosystem health evaluation model. Results show that the combination of T-S fuzzy model and neural network eliminates the influences of subjective factors and improve the final precisions efficiently.

Canine behaviour assessments are commonly used in shelters to identify behaviour problems in dogs prior to adoption. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether kennel monitoring of dogs could identify early signs of behaviour problems, thereby facilitating early intervention and better management of dogs displaying behaviour problems. Kennel behaviour was monitored for dogs (n = 38) in their first five days in kennels at a shelter in Brisbane, Australia. This was compared to a formal assessment of exploratory, handling, play, run/freeze, and food guarding behaviour, as well as stranger and fake toddler interactions, and behaviour when the dog was alone, conducted five days after shelter admission. Kennel behaviours associated with fear, anxiety, and arousal in dogs were significantly correlated with the same behaviours in the formal assessment. Positional correlations were also evident. With respect to outcomes, dogs that displayed more whining, tense body posture, standing leaning forward, panting, ears forward, less barking, lowered body and balanced/relaxed body posture, standing still, and standing by the wall had increased odds of failing the behaviour assessment. Over the five days in the kennel, the frequency and duration of fear-related behaviours decreased, suggesting a reduction in arousal as the dog became accustomed to the shelter environment. The study demonstrates that monitoring kennel behaviour could detect early signs of behaviour problems.

Background: Improving balance-related ability is an important goal in stroke rehabilitation. Evidence is needed to demonstrate how this goal could be better achieved. Aim: Determine if trunk exercises on unstable surfaces would improve trunk control and balance for persons in the subacute stage of stroke. Design: An assessor-blind randomized controlled trial. Setting: Inpatients in the department of rehabilitation in a general hospital. Population: Patients who suffered a first-time stroke with onset from one to six months. Methods: Inpatients with stroke were assigned to upper limb exercises (control group, n = 17) or trunk exercises on unstable surfaces (experimental group, n = 18) to receive training twice a week for six weeks, in addition to their daily conventional stroke rehabilitation. Sensorimotor function tests, including hand grip, plantar sensitivity, stroke rehabilitation assessment of movement and Fugl-Meyer lower extremity motor scale, and clinical outcome assessments, including Trunk Impairment Scale and 6 m walk test, were conducted before and after six weeks of training. The center of the pressure area while maintaining static posture and peak displacement while leaning forward, as well as the average speed of raising the unaffected arm, were measured in sitting without foot support, sitting with foot support and standing to reflect trunk control, sitting balance and standing balance, respectively. Results: The between-group differences in the sensorimotor functions were nonsignificant before and after training. Compared with the control group, the experimental group had significantly greater forward leaning and faster arm raising in sitting without foot support, higher Trunk Impairment Scale total score, and shorter 6 m walking time after training, but not before training. Conclusion: Trunk exercises on unstable surfaces could further improve trunk control, the ability to raise the unaffected arm rapidly in sitting, and walking for persons in the subacute stage of stroke. This intervention may be considered to be included in stroke rehabilitation.

Understanding the structural behavior of heritage buildings is usually a very complicated task because they typically present complex deterioration and damage patterns which cannot be fully evaluated by means of visual inspections. Moreover, the reliability of such constructions largely depends on different materials, structural components and details, the health of which is often unknown or affected by great uncertainties. In this regard, the experimental dynamic testing of heritage buildings and monuments subjected to ambient vibrations has become a valuable tool for their assessment because of the minimum interference with the structure. Traffic-induced vibrations are not always a feasible dynamic load for monumental buildings due to their very low intensity or owing to existing restrictions to road and rail traffic. On the other hand, the analysis of the experimental response under earthquakes can lead to more relevant information about the dynamic behavior of historic constructions, provided that the structure is equipped with a permanent sensor network. Within this framework, the present work illustrates preliminary results carried out from time and frequency domain analyses performed on the experimental dynamic response of the leaning tower of Pisa using seismic records. The main dynamic features of the monument have been identified, and then examined taking into account the seismic input and the soil-foundation-structure interaction.

Purpose – Reliability and political bias of mass media has been a controversial topic in the literature. The purpose of this paper is to propose and implement a methodology for fully automatic evaluation of the political tendency of the written media on the web, which does not rely on subjective human judgments. Design/methodology/approach – The underlying idea is to base the evaluation on fully automatic comparison of the texts of articles on different news websites to the overtly political texts with known political orientation. The authors also apply an alternative approach for evaluation of political tendency based on wisdom of the crowds. Findings – The authors found that the learnt classifier can accurately distinguish between self-declared left and right news sites. Furthermore, news sites’ political tendencies can be identified by automatic classifier learnt from manifestly political texts without recourse to any manually tagged data. The authors also show a high correlation between readers’ perception (as a “wisdom of crowds” evaluation) of the bias and the classifier results for different news sites. Social implications – The results are quite promising and can put an end to the never ending dispute on the reliability and bias of the press. Originality/value – This paper proposes and implements a new approach for fully automatic (independent of human opinion/assessment) identification of political bias of news sites by their texts.

Improperly grown trees may cause huge hazards to the environment and to humans, through e.g., climate change, soil erosion, etc. A proximity environmental feature-based tree health assessment (PTA) scheme is proposed to prevent these hazards by providing guidance for early warning methods of potential poor tree health. In PTA development, tree health is defined and evaluated based on proximity environmental features (PEFs). The PEF takes into consideration the seven surrounding ambient features that strongly impact tree health. The PEFs were measured by the deployed smart sensors surrounding trees. A database composed of tree health and relative PEFs was established for further analysis. An adaptive data identifying (ADI) algorithm is applied to exclude the influence of interference factors in the database. Finally, the radial basis function (RBF) neural network (NN), a machine leaning algorithm, has been identified as the appropriate tool with which to correlate tree health and PEFs to establish the PTA algorithm. One of the salient features of PTA is that the algorithm can evaluate, and thus monitor, tree health remotely and automatically from smart sensor data by taking advantage of the well-established internet of things (IoT) network and machine learning algorithm.

In the overall assessment of the system's work, the building-base is currently making a large inaccuracy in the incompleteness of survey information, especially definition the location of geological boundaries directly under the foundation. Two examples show the dependency of the geological soil profile inaccuracy on the distance between the wells and it gives a quantitative assessment of the relationship between the magnitude of the inaccuracy and the distance between the drilling wells of geologists. The numerical modeling method shows the influence of such an investigation inaccuracy on the result of the settlement calculation.

Background: Fatigue, inactivity, and falls are major health issues for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). We examined the extent to which fatigue and low walking activity are associated with quality of life and increased fall risk in people with MS. Methods: People with MS (N = 210, aged 21–74 years) were categorized as having either high or low reported fatigue and walking activity levels and were then followed up for falls using monthly fall diaries for 6 months. Results: A high level of fatigue was significantly associated with higher MS Disease Steps scores, worse balance, high composite physiological (Physiological Profile Assessment) fall risk scores, greater fear of falling, lower World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) quality of life scores, and more prospectively recorded falls. Low walking activity was significantly associated with higher MS Disease Steps scores, reduced proprioception, worse standing and leaning balance, slow stepping, slow gait speed, worse fine motor control, high Physiological Profile Assessment fall risk scores, more fear of falling, and lower WHODAS quality of life scores. Conclusions: Increased fatigue and low walking activity levels were significantly associated with increased fall risk and lower quality of life in people with MS. Interventions aimed at addressing fatigue and inactivity may have multiple benefits for this group.

The integration of new building materials incorporating phase change material (PCM) into the building envelope leads to an increase of the heat storage capacity, which may have an influence on minimizing the cooling demand and heating of the building. This work addresses a thermal performance enhancement of brick walls with incorporated PCM. The improvement has been assessed through a numerical approach in dealing with a 1-D transient conduction problem with phase change, while leaning on experimental results from a transient guarded hot plates method. The simulations have been fulfilled using a hybrid method combining both the finite volume method and an enthalpy porosity technique. The results of this combined approach are in good agreement. In the light of the findings obtained, it appears that PCM incorporation into a brick masonry can both reduce peak temperatures up to 3?C and smooth out daily fluctuations. Thereby, the evaluation achieved can turns out useful in developing brick walls with an incorporated PCM for passive cooling, thus improving buildings thermal performance.

A novel leaning-type spatial arch bridge without thrust was designed as a landmark in a major urban city. In order to alleviate the higher negative reaction force at side span and enhance the lateral stability, commonly the case within this type bridge, a large-size replaceable box-shaped steel rod with pinned connections was introduced. The fatigue behaviour of the box-shaped steel rod and related upper and lower anchorage segments was investigated through a full-scale constant-amplitude fatigue test under axial loading. In comparison to the fatigue test results, the fatigue evaluation based on Eurocode 3 nominal stress design curve FAT56 considerably overestimated the fatigue strength of critical welded detail in box-shaped steel rod, which was underrated according to the universal International Institute of Welding effective notch stress design curve FAT225. The presented full-scale programme also validated the applicability of the latter method, which presented conservative results, to large-size thick-plate (80 mm) welded joints. The conclusion based on the test and theoretical results may provide a reference for the fatigue design of adopting box-shaped steel rod in spatial arch bridges.

Methods for assessment of the quality of leaning are discussed, including possibilities to predict the results of the learning based on the calculation of negentropy. Negentropy is used as an integral informational index, demonstrating objective assessment of the learning model used. We suggest to use the emergent learning model, as a generalized projection of the learning process with substantiated merging of e-learning and traditional learning. For setting up a multi-criterial system for assessment of the quality of learning, we suggest to evaluate all components of pedagogical system in interplay with each other, on the first and all following hierarchical levels. We also suggest to define students as a special category of objects in the said pedagogical system, which interacts with other elements of the system, and thus the system is organized as “student-oriented”. Suggested methodology of prediction and assessment of the learning progress relies on building an hierarchical structure of criterial system of quality. In phase one, we have chosen basic criteria influencing the quality of the learning, which are organized into the first level of Ishikawa diagram. Basing on expert’s knowledge, we then assigned each criterium a corresponding coefficient of importance for the quality of learning. In the second phase, the same was done for criteria of the second and third levels of importance. In cases when it was not possible to unequivocally assess the coefficient of importance, we present the system of equations for calculating the membership function of a fuzzy set. In the third phase, integral values of negentropy were calculated for three study courses and for a model situation.

The sensation of phantom motion or exhibition of bodily sway is often reported in the proximity of an MR scanner. It is proposed that the magnetic field stimulates the vestibular system. There are a number of possible mechanisms responsible, and the relative contributions of susceptibility on the otolithic receptors and the Lorentz force on the cupulae have not yet been explored. This exploratory study aims to investigate the impact of being in the proximity of a 7.0 T MR scanner. The modified clinical test of sensory interaction on balance (mCTSIB) was used to qualitatively ascertain whether or not healthy control subjects who passed the mCTSIB in normal conditions 1) experienced subjective sensations of dizziness, vertigo or of leaning or shifting in gravity when in the magnetic field and 2) exhibited visibly increased bodily sway whilst in the magnetic field compared to outside the magnetic field. Condition IV of the mCTSIB was video recorded outside and inside the magnetic field, providing a semi-quantitative measure of sway. For condition IV of the mCTSIB (visual and proprioceptive cues compromised), all seven locations/orientations around the scanner yielded significantly more sway than at baseline (p < 0.01 FDR). A Student’s t-test comparing the RMS velocity of a motion marker on the upper arm during mCTSIB condition IV showed a significant increase in the amount of motion exhibited in the field (T = 2.59; d.f. = 9; p = 0.029) compared to outside the field. This initial study using qualitative measures of sway demonstrates that there is evidence for MR-naïve individuals exhibiting greater sway while performing the mCTSIB in the magnetic field compared to outside the field. Directional polarity of sway was not significant. Future studies of vestibular stimulation by magnetic fields would benefit from the development of a sensitive, objective measure of balance function, which can be performed inside a magnetic field.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face challenges in implementing industrial robotics in their manufacturing due to limited resources and expertise. There is still good economic potential in using industrial robotics, however, due to manufacturers leaning toward newer technology and automated processes. The research on sustainability decision-making for transitioning a traditional process to a robotic process is limited for SMEs. This study presents a systemic framework for assessing the sustainability of implementing robotic techniques in key processes that would benefit SMEs. The framework identifies several key economic, technical, and managerial decision-making factors during the transition phase. Sustainability assessments, including cost, environmental impact, and social impact, are used in the framework for engineers and managers to evaluate the technical and sustainability trade-offs of the transition. A case study was conducted on a typical US metal fabrication SME focusing on transitioning a shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process to a robotic gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process. A sustainability assessment was conducted following the framework. The results suggest that the transition phase involves numerous factors for engineers and managers to consider and the proposed framework will benefit SMEs by providing an analytical method for industrial robotics implementation decision-making.

During Ortachala HPP operation period cracks were formed in the right-bank of foundation, where is located underground fish-way sections. Right bank dam-foundation contact opened only in the horizontal direction, that caused 5.5 cm gap development, while there were no changes in the vertical direction. Visual researches showed that cracks (size is 4–5 cm) developed in fish-way construction. Mathematical models: fish-drainage-foundation, retaining wall-drainage-foundation, with the use of the finite element scheme, allowed us to finalize the suffusion-deformation process developed during the operation, namely: in the cracking zones of fish-way developed high gradients of seepage pressure, causing suffusion; under the influence of the weight of the soil and transport, shrinkage of the soil developed, which for the foundation of the right bank, created bending deformations causing the rotation of the soil in the vertical plane; bending deformation of the foundation at the contact of the concrete structure and the embankment caused a horizontal opening, spread out – at a depth of 4m. In connection with this, the retaining wall, leaning against the ground, loses support and, under the influence of hydrostatic pressure, tensile stress develops in it. In the case of crack formation in the wall, concentrated seepage will develop, which will cause groundwater rise in the main road and various unfavourable processes. Having established the reason for opening the contact, the fish was closed, as a result of which above mentioned process was stopped. Thus, the waterproofing of the fish-way is a necessary measure for the normal operation of the waterworks.

English teaching plays an extremely important role in college education. It can not just improve students’ English level, but also help students adapt to the increasingly open and complex society. Besides, it is an important foundation for students to further go to the world and integrate in the world development trend. Although English teaching has received attention of various colleges and universities, there are still many problems in college English teaching, and the teaching effect is not obvious. To make teaching conform to the rapid development of the new education environment and make teaching practice more fitted with the standard of modern education, teaching mode reform for college English is imperative. Based on the teaching idea of “assessment for learning”, the teaching management system was designed in this study, including three steps: teaching intelligence system, assessment and test system, and information feedback system. Meanwhile, interactive teaching approach was combined to plan the interactive teaching process of college English course, including the process of proposing and solving questions, independent thinking and cooperative learning module, and leaning achievement exchange activity. In the end, assessment-for-learning teaching mode was used to collect the data of four dimensions (degree of learning engagement, completion degree of English learning content, degree of English learning interaction, and English learning effect) and the learning performance evaluation system supported by big data was established. The experimental results show that the teaching mode in this study could effectively improve students’ learning performance and enhance their actual English application ability.

Recommended systems were built to propose best services using customer's feedback, applying quality of service parameters, assigning scores, trust worthiness and clustering in different forms and models. These techniques did not record and use interrelationships between the services that is true impact of service utilization. In the proposed approach, service association factor calculates value of interrelations among services used by the end user. An intelligent leaning based recommendation system is developed for assisting users to select services on their respective preferences. George Bentham initially expressed reservations about Darwin's Origin of species (1859). What most troubled Bentham was the potentially disruptive nature of Darwin's ideas for natural history. Bentham, renowned even among other naturalists for always proceeding with the utmost intellectual caution, decided to ignore Darwin's theory. This reticence disappointed Darwin, who pressured Bentham unsuccessfully to give an assessment of the Origin. Bentham did, however, publicly praise Darwin's work on the fertilisation of orchids as an ideal model for natural history research. Finally, in his 1863 presidential address to the Linnean Society, Bentham directly addressed “the great question in agitation”, evolution. His judicious praise of the Origin would, Darwin was convinced, “do more to shake the unshaken & bring on those leaning to our side, than anything written directly in favour of transmutation.” Bentham's tentative conversion to evolution came only after Darwin's work, particularly on orchids, convinced him that evolution would add “stability” to systematic work. As a result, evolution's influence on systematic botany was largely conservative. It validated, rather than challenged, the method, systems, world view and intellectual authority of established experts like Bentham.

The subject of this research is the sanctions imposed by Western countries against Russia in response to the Ukrainian events of 2014. Leaning on the available empirical data and expert assessments conducted by various financial and analytical structures, an attempt is made to identify the nature and severity of impact of sanction pressure upon different economic sectors of the Russian Federation, implemented for achieving the foreign policy goals. Emphasis is placed on the absence of uniform sanctions policy due to the specificity of foreign policy goals and peculiarities of sanction mechanisms used by the United States and the European Union. It is underlined that anti-Russian sanctions and Russia’s response in many instances are substantiated by the preceding trends in strategic vision of foreign and domestic policy by the Russian Federation, as well as the nature of its relations with the West. The conclusion is made that the focus in studying the problem of sanctions has shifted towards the political analysis and further analytical and scientific examination. The author believes that in the conditions of uncertainty of the economic effects and absence of common approaches towards understanding the prospects of sanctions policy by the Western countries the two main scenarios of its further development. It would either gradually fade out without “renewed efforts”, slowly negating its practical effect, and prompt the United States and the European Union intensify the dialogue with Russia, avoiding the problematic issues on the status of Crimea, implication in the events in South-Eastern Ukraine, etc.; or it can lead to full “politicization” of sanctions polity and its integration into the negotiation process on settlement of the Ukrainian situation and turning into a powerful tool for conducting negotiations.

This study shows that there is positive regulatory effect of feedback from pupils to teachers on Assessment for Learning (AfL), classroom proactiveness, and on visible and progressive learning but not on behaviour. This research finding further articulates feedback from pupil to teacher as a paradigm shift from the classical paradigm of feedback from teacher to pupil. Here, the emphasis is geared towards pupils understanding of objectives built from previous knowledge. These are then feedback onto the teachers by the pupils in the form of discrete loops of cues and questions, where they are with their learning. This therefore enables them to move to the next level of understanding, and thus acquired independence, which in turn is reflected by their success in both formative and summative assessments. This study therefore shows that when feedback from pupil to teacher is used in combination with teacher to pupil feedback, AfL is ameliorated and hence, visible and accelerated learning occurs in a gender, nor subject non-dependent manner.

The literature examining and supporting a relationship between balance performance and other cognitive domains is limited. Objective: To investigate the relationship between global cognition and cognitive domain function and balance performance in older people with CI. Methods: The iFOCIS randomized controlled trial recruited 309 community-dwelling older people with CI. Baseline assessments completed before randomization were used for analyses including the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination-III (ACE-III; global cognition) and its individual cognitive domains (attention; memory; verbal fluency; language; visuospatial ability) and the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), a measure of EF. A composite balance score was derived from postural sway and leaning balance tests. Results: In linear regression analyses adjusted for covariates, global cognition and each cognitive domain were significantly associated with balance performance. EF (verbal fluency; β= –0.254, p < 0.001, adjusted R2 = 0.387) and visuospatial ability (β= –0.258, p < 0.001, adjusted R2 = 0.391) had the strongest associations with balance performance. In a comprehensively adjusted multivariable model including all of the ACE-III cognitive domains, visuospatial ability and EF (verbal fluency) were independently and significantly associated with balance performance. Conclusion: Poorer global cognition and cognitive domain function were associated with poorer balance performance in this sample of people with CI. Visuospatial ability and EF were independently associated with balance, highlighting potential shared neural networks and the role higher-level cognitive processes and spatial perception/processing play in postural control.

PurposeThe emergence of antimicrobial resistance has led to increasing efforts to reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics in primary care, but potential hazards from bacterial infection continue to cause concern. This study investigated how primary care prescribers perceive risk and safety concerns associated with reduced antibiotic prescribing.MethodsQualitative study using semistructured interviews conducted with primary care prescribers from 10 general practices in an urban area and a shire town in England. A thematic analysis was conducted.ResultsThirty participants were recruited, including twenty-three general practitioners, five nurses and two pharmacists. Three main themes were identified: risk assessment, balancing treatment risks and negotiating decisions and risks. Respondents indicated that their decisions were grounded in clinical risk assessment, but this was informed by different approaches to antibiotic use, with most leaning towards reduced prescribing. Prescribers’ perceptions of risk included the consequences of both inappropriate prescribing and inappropriate withholding of antibiotics. Sepsis was viewed as the most concerning potential outcome of non-prescribing, leading to possible patient harm and potential litigation. Risks of antibiotic prescribing included antibiotic resistant and Clostridium difficile infections, as well as side effects, such as rashes, that might lead to possible mislabelling as antibiotic allergy. Prescribers elicited patient preferences for use or avoidance of antibiotics to inform management strategies, which included educational advice, advice on self-management including warning signs, use of delayed prescriptions and safety netting.ConclusionsAttitudes towards antibiotic prescribing are evolving, with reduced antibiotic prescribing now being approached more systematically. The safety trade-offs associated with either use or non-use of antibiotics present difficulties especially when prescribing decisions are inconsistent with patients’ expectations.

Background and Purpose Communication is the most important aspect of practice that health care professionals have to master. The purpose of this study was to measure the content and prevalence of verbal and nonverbal communications between physical therapists and patients with back pain. Subjects Seven physical therapists and 21 patients with back pain participated in this study. Methods The first interaction following the initial assessment was recorded with a video camera. The outcome measures were the Medical Communications Behavior System (verbal communication) and frequencies of nonverbal behaviors (affirmative head nodding, smiling, eye gaze, forward leaning, and touch). Semistructured interviews were undertaken with the physical therapists to determine the perceived influence of the video camera. Results A total of 2,055 verbal statements were made. Physical therapists spent approximately twice as much time talking as patients, with content behaviors (such as taking history and giving advice) comprising 52% of verbal communications. The most prevalent nonverbal behaviors were touch by physical therapists (54%) and eye gaze by patients (84%). Discussion and Conclusion The prevalence and content of communication can be measured with video analysis and validated tools. Communication is an extremely important but underexplored dimension of the patient-therapist relationship, and the methods described here could provide a useful model for further research and reflective practice.

The subject of this research is the assessment of management relations developed as a result of involvement of fishing industry enterprises in the corporate social responsibility. The object of this research is the processes of formation of corporate social responsibility in the fishing industry business as a sector promoting national interests. This article tests the original complex methodology for assessing the involvement of business structures in the corporate social responsibility based on calculation of the integrated index. Special attention is given to calculation of the index, which consists of the system of quantitative and qualitative elements of the corporate social responsibility of the business structure, as well as to the choice and justification of measures for implementation of these elements into the individual profile of the corporate social responsibility of the business structure for subsequent comparative analysis. Leaning on the approaches existing in the world scientific literature towards the concept of corporate social responsibility, the author identifies the need for definition and assessment of such indicator as the involvement of business structures in the corporate social responsibility. The author proposes to calculate this indicator according to the algorithm of methodology that takes into consideration the elements of corporate social responsibility determined on the basis of actions on the development of internal and external environment of the company. Approbation of methodology on the example of fishing industry business structures can serve as the foundation for comparative analysis of business structures of various sectors in the regions, taking into account their impact upon the regional development for determination of feasibility of state support and development of the unified structure of corporate social reporting.

Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) help the learners to take control of their learning. PLEs enable the learners to set their own leaning targets and manage their learning by communicating with others in the process of learning. As latest technological advancements have brought revolution in every field of life, so as in the PLEs. Modern PLEs are the integration of a number of latest technologies i.e. blogs, Wikis, RSS feeds, where content is shaped as per the individual needs and interests of the students. Focusing on these latest aspects of the PLEs, University of South Australia initiated a three year new learning platform project in 2010, called LearnOnline, which will replace the University's current online teaching environment UniSAnet. LearnOnline was launched with a vision to foster richer learning through promoting students' active involvement in their courses and involving the students in a deeper learning experience. LearnOnline is built on modular approach and consists of different components i.e. ePortfolio, Course Outline, Lecture Recording, Copyright Monitoring, Student Email, Assessment and Feedback, Virtual Classroom, Course and Teacher Evaluation. Each component is developed separately and is fully independent. This methodology is helping the incremental implementation of the LearnOnline. As soon as a component is completed, after testing, it becomes the part of LearnOnline. In this paper, the author explains the features and workings of LearnOnline in detail and also evaluates its design methodologies.

Previous research has indicated differential patterns of neuro-cognitive functioning in patients with schizophrenia. In this study, we explored the relationship between neuro-cognitive functioning with both socio-demographic and symptom characteristics of 35 Arab patients attending an out-patient psychiatric clinic in the kingdom of Bahrain. All patients participated in an OPCRIT diagnostic assessment, assisted in the completion of a socio-demographic questionnaire (CSSRI) and completed a minimum of four computerized neuro-cognitive tests from the CANTAB. These were Motor Screening (MOT), Paired Associates Learning (PAL: Visual Leaning and New Memory), Stockings of Cambridge (SOC: Spatial Planning and Frontal Lobe functioning) and Intra-Extra Dimensional Set Shift (IED: Testing rule acquisition and reversal)). The average age of onset of symptoms was at age 28 (age range 19–47) and symptom onset in the majority of cases was within between 1 and 6 months. Results indicated using standard score measures on tests of cognitive function that the majority of patients experienced significant deficits in the areas of frontal lobe functioning, working memory and visual memory. Neuro-cognitive test results were not related to(1) presence/absence of insight,(b) diagnostic category, and(c) duration of illness. However, results did appear to predict employment status. Results are discussed in the context of service provision and development of psychiatric services for patients with schizophrenia in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Purpose – This article aims to consider why it is becoming so important for businesses to use social media, and to explore the transformational impacts on organizations and the implications for learning and development. Social media is changing the nature of business and introducing new learning and development needs. These are not confined to the specific skills required to design and implement social media strategies: in many companies, more extensive transformations of culture and organizational systems are necessary to support the new ways of working that are being driven by social media usage. Design/methodology/approach – The findings are based on a combination of literature review and our own research and experience across hundreds of projects. Findings – An organizational change readiness assessment exercise can be used to determine whether a company has the right types of skills and expertise and an appropriate organizational environment to maximize the benefits of social media participation, and to identify which areas need to be modified or strengthened. The specific requirements for change will vary by organization and industry, but few companies can now afford to neglect social media or the types of learning and development necessary to support their use as a core component of business strategy. Originality/value – This work links the benefits of social media participation to leaning areas that need to be modified or strengthened.
