Background/Context New technologies have been largely absent in arts education curriculum even though they offer opportunities to address arts integration, equity, and the technological prerequisites of an increasingly digital age. This paper draws upon the emerging professional field of “media arts” and the ways in which youth use new technologies for communication to design a 21st-century K-12 arts education curriculum. Description of prior research on the subject and/or its intellectual context and/or policy context Building on sociocultural theories of constructionism as well as Dewey's theories of the arts and aesthetics as a democratic pedagogy, this study draws upon over three years of extensive field study at a digital design studio where underprivileged youth accessed programming environments emphasizing graphics, music, and video. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of the Study This study documents what youth learn through media art making in informal settings, the strengths and limitations of capitalizing on youth culture in media art production, and the distinct contributions that media arts education can make to the classroom environment. Research Design A mixed-methods approach was utilized that analyzed data from participants and professional interviews, an archive of youths’ media art, and videotape documentation of youth at work on their projects. Conclusions/Recommendations Findings point to the ways in which youth engage with technology that encourages active learning and how new types of software can be used to illustrate and encourage this process.

The article substantiates the relevance of the problem of familiarizing young children with various arts in the education environment for expanding the cultural experience of each child. The appropriateness of training teachers to create an upbringing cultural environment focused on the harmonized development of children through art is proven. The authors identify the “deficits” in the modern education environment, reveal the social demand for the training of teachers for educating young children by means of art in a specially organized cultural environment, and outline the relevant tasks. This provides for a clear definition of the goal-setting, methodology, and the stages of an applied scientific study and developing a model for training teachers to organize an upbringing cultural environment incorporating the following arts: children’s literature, music book illustration (children’s illustrated books), folk toys, children's theater, animation, art photography, etc. As a result, the authors present a model of training teachers to organize an upbringing cultural environment focused on familiarizing young children with various arts. The empirical materials of the study include: 1) analytical documents; 2) the program for the additional training of preschool teachers “Organizing the education of young children in an upbringing cultural environment: from an innovative program to variative practice” (72 academic hours); 3) methodological recommendations for teachers on creating an upbringing cultural environment; 4) the technology for designing an upbringing cultural environment; 5) the approximate repertoire of artworks understandable for young children; 6) digital content for teachers and parents “First steps into the world of art”.

Arts education has huge impact on our life today. Integrated art education does not stop at simply fostering specialized artists, but is becoming a holistic education that enhances emotions and character through art experiences, while serving as the foundation for this. It aims operating cultural arts education and cultural arts education spaces in the future. This study examined the concept of integrated art education and activity space elements, and it aims at using the results to search for sustainable utilization plans for the West Seoul Arts Center, which is the first cultural arts space established in Korea. The research method included case studies of foreign integrated arts education, and upon studying the regional and social environmental characteristics, as well as art experience activities per development stage in everyday life, it was possible to check integration with the local society for spacial elements according to the external environment, integration with the natural environment, reciprocal integration with life, as well as the features of variability, openness, and flexibility that are spatial elements according to the external environment. The West Seoul Arts Center for which such external and interior spatial elements apply will fulfill its role as a platform for regional hub cultural arts education space by improving friendly accessibility as an open space by establishing a citizen art gallery environment filled with the creative arts of citizens, while improving design that applies variability, openness, and flexibility with an image of an ‘empty space in nature’ considering the natural ecological environment and establishing a community activity space containing the local features.

This essay investigates the need for and the challenges associated with the establishment of western style liberal arts education in a non-western nation. Two such programs in Japan are examined: Akita International University and Yamanashi Gakuin University’s International College of Liberal Arts or iCLA. The authors have been deeply involved in the establishment and administration of both of these all-English language liberal arts ba degree programs. The difficulty of establishing a liberal arts education curriculum in a country like Japan is explored by examining the cultural and institutional obstacles within the Japanese system of higher education. The two case studies are presented to highlight the establishment problems and subsequent successes of these programs in a nation with little tradition of liberal arts education at the university level. Finally, the questions of how to justify a liberal arts education program and how to design such a program are discussed by an examination of the utility of area studies as an organizing framework for liberal arts education in a non-western society.

In this research article, Rubén A. Gaztambide-Fernández and Dominique Rivière examine the discursive frames that students and teachers in four specialized arts high schools in Toronto used in describing their schools as safe environments. The belief that arts high schools are safe is shared by students and teachers, particularly in relationship to LGBTTQ+ students, making these schools optimal settings for examining what safety means and how it is construed. The authors show how the assumption that arts high schools are safe is related to the larger social and cultural context in which each school is situated. By asking what it means to be safe, whose safety, and from what dangers, they aim to demystify the notion of safety, showing how it is related to dynamics of inclusion and exclusion that can be traced to broader national discourses. Drawing on critical race theory, as well as the concept of homonationalism and the construction of exalted subjects, the article highlights the remarkably similar discourses through which both arts high schools and the liberal nation-state are construed as safe.

The aim of this paper is to raise questions about how cinema can allow us to rethink our relationship with the environment in the context of what is known today as the Anthropocene. In the discussion, I chart the current debates about the ecological in the humanities, with a particular focus on new materialisms, to argue that cinema can be fruitfully thought of as part of what anthropologist Anna Tsing (2015) calls the “arts of noticing”. I then turn to a consideration of the potential influx of affect theories on ecocriticism and film studies, before sketching out possible approaches to studying film from an affective, new materialist and postanthropocentric perspective. These approaches might have wider implications for rhetorical perspectives on cinema, especially for those investigating emotional appeals.

The status of French as a language has improved to some extent in recent years as a result of the exchange and blending of cultures from various nations. Each language, including French, must undergo a protracted process in order to become more widely spoken. It is essential to develop top-notch French interpreters in order to lower the barriers preventing cross-border communication. The teaching of French interpretation has recently received more attention in many colleges, but the issue of a single teaching method has long persisted. In recent years, a new approach to teaching the liberal arts has emerged. Its main goal is to implement comprehensive interdisciplinary teaching by fusing contemporary information technology with traditional liberal arts instruction. This paper conducted a cutting-edge study on the teaching method of French interpretation against the backdrop of the new liberal arts in order to alter the teaching strategy and increase teaching effectiveness. In this paper, an intelligent interpretation teaching system was constructed using information technology. Through text classification algorithms, it incorporated and optimized teaching resources. According to the experimental findings, the teaching process was optimized, and the teaching efficiency increased by 7.94% when French interpretation was taught against a backdrop of new liberal arts.

The UN General Assembly realized in 1983 that there was a heavy deterioration of the human environment and natural resources, and established the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED). WCED's mission was to unite countries to pursue sustainable development together. This commission prepared a report called as “Our Common Future” in October 1987. The focus in the report was that the perspectives of society and nature are equal to that of economy.Countries’ economic and social development being sustainable, preventing global climate changes and natural disasters are directly proportionate to education strategies’ involving sustainability. Sustainability education is a model that aims to support the learners to become responsible citizens who struggle for a more sustainable world with their knowledge, skills, values and mental abilities. UNESCO indicates that “Education for Sustainable Development” allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future.Art and design education has a multi-directional content for sustainable development ideals. For example, aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking which are in the nature of art and design subjects, help students grow as individuals who are environment and ecosystem-sensitive. Sustainability of art and design education could be seen in two-directions. The first side is to keep students away from any kind of violence by providing them with sensitivity and empathy as well as help them develop respect for society and environment. In this way, students gain susceptibility and eagerness to protect ecosystem and live in the limits of nature. The second side is the sustainability projects carried out by students and instructors in art and design lessons. These are applications especially to clarify that a sustainable environment, nature and ecosystem is important for a sustainable life. This study includes some practical examples about the second side. Keywords: Sustainability, art and design education.

In a making process, a craftsperson starts a dialogue with the environment, tools and materials that are essential to their professional practice. During this materially and bodily entangled process, the act of making is thinking per se: the forming of the material emerges through the interaction with the material and is thus simultaneous with, and intrinsic to, the creative process itself. This article presents a practice-led case study of material thinking in the context of contemporary ceramics that one of the authors experienced during a research period in New Zealand. By utilizing walking along the changing landscapes as a creative method, as well as interacting with local practitioners, the craftsperson collects natural minerals and follows the material’s flow, letting it actively shape the creative events. The encounter with soil-based materials in their different forms and working with them in renewed ways reveal how the material’s behaviours influence the craftsperson’s thinking and making. This study shows that walking can facilitate the entanglement between the craftsperson’s knowledge and newly discovered materials, generating emotional and dialogical relationship with the environment, including human collaborators.

AbstractThis article showcases a creative approach to early childhood education for sustainability (ECEfS). It reports on the author's doctoral research program, which examined the effectiveness of arts-based pedagogies for exploring and understanding the natural world in an early childhood education program. Motivated by their existing commitment to education for sustainability (EfS), the participating educators used the arts for further exploration and understanding of the natural world in teaching and learning. They explored the role of the arts in knowledge production and embodied experience, and reinterpreted and built on their own funds of knowledge about their environment. The result was meaningful curriculum steeped in content about the natural environments that were local to the children and their educators. The findings further signify the challenges educators needed to overcome in order to intensify their connection with their own local environments, and the effect that this enhanced connection had on their capacity to reflect local natural environments in their programs with the children.

This article presents personal stories from a participatory biographical arts-based study with a specific category of racialised migrants: individuals seeking asylum, in the North East of England. Responding to the important questions posed by this special issue, the article explores individual experiences of navigating the UK's hostile environment with a focus on the threefold punitive ‘threat’ of dispersal, detention, and destitution (Bloch and Schuster, 2005). Adopting an intersectional lens, the discussion highlights the impact of such policies and their compound effect of creating (un)safe and exclusionary everyday spaces, while also outlining the potential for resistance as illustrated by participants’ actions and their creative (re)actions as part of the study's arts-based approach.

Arts marketing is the inevitable development trend of contemporary society, in the context of international exchanges and integration deepening and the competition in the arts field is becoming more and more intensive. If arts organizations want to successfully carry out marketing activities, they need to have a deep understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of arts marketing. Theoretically, many researchers have pointed out that the factors impacting and affecting arts marketing include internal environment and external environment factors, in which the important factors are the external environment ones, including: Economic, political and legal factors; Cultural, social and technological factors. The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of external environmental factors on arts marketing of theaters in Hanoi, Vietnam. The author inherits the above research points and conducts a practical survey for 50 managers and 150 artists of 12 theaters in Hanoi capital, Vietnam. The important contribution of the study is shown by the author through the results of testing the scales, analyzing the correlation between the scales and testing the research hypothesis, which is: economic, political, legal factors (EPL) and Cultural, social and technological factors (CST) all have an impact on arts marketing (AM) of theaters in Hanoi, Vietnam. Moreover, Economic, political and legal factors (EPL) have a stronger influence on Arts Marketing (AM). The research results are also meaningful to many Vietnam's arts managers in planning and adjusting policies to achieve results and effectiveness in marketing activities to bring art works to the public; adapting to the market, in line with the movement and development trend of Vietnamese society and international integration.
