Objective: To encourage children in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades to learn about good nutrition and display their knowledge in an attractive poster. Method: A children’s poster contest was conducted through schools in the Washington, DC metro area in conjunction with the 2004 National Health Education Week’s campaign, “Healthy Eating – Every Bite Counts!”. Posters were judged on a 100 point scale, and six winners were chosen for each grade level. The children with the winning posters received cash prizes and were honored at an awards ceremony at the Society for Public Health Education’s (SOPHE) annual meeting. Results: Eligible entries were received from 76 students at 14 schools in the Arlington, VA and Washington, DC school districts. Almost all of the posters showed a good knowledge of nutrition by the students. Conclusion: National Health Education Week themes that are specific to children should encourage participation among schools, teachers, and parents. Partnerships offer possibilities for dissemination of public health education campaigns. A children’s poster contest about healthy eating in schools in the Washington, DC area was successful in gaining 76 entries from 14 schools, and children displayed a high level of knowledge of which foods were healthy for them and a high level of creativity and artistic talent.

The Ohio State University Calculator and Computer Precalculus Project (C2PC) is a curriculum revision project designed to improve the mathematics preparation of college-bound high school students. The project is a cooperative effort of Ohio State University's mathematics department and the educational theory and practice department and of the Columbus, Southwestern, and Upper Arlington City school districts. Over fifty other high schools throughout the United States participated in the field test. Funding for the project comes from the Ohio Board of Regents. British Petroleum (Ohio), and the National Science Foundation.

In order to improve the production of physics teachers, and high school science teachers in general, at The University of Texas at Arlington, the authors obtained grant funding to offer National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarships and to support a replication of the successful UTeach science and mathematics teacher preparation program. The Noyce grant was obtained first, and a modest increase in science teacher production was seen. The UTeach replication has been implemented on a four-year schedule, culminating in the establishment of a new student teaching program in January 2014. The combination of a UTeach replication and availability of Noyce Scholarships has UT Arlington poised to improve its science teacher production by an order of magnitude.

Abstract When Worden put up posters inviting students to come to a meeting, he caught the eye of Catherine Anderson. A freshman at MIT, Anderson had also gone to Arlington High School. There, she had n’t known Worden well, though they had played together in the band (she violin, he trumpet), but she had worked some on Solectria III. During her senior year in high school Anderson had been repairing bikes at Bicycle Corner in Arlington when Worden came in and asked for help on the solar race car he was building at his parent’s place with the $5,000 he’d received from Mirak Chevrolet.

Abstract James Worden had built his first roadworthy electric car when he was still in high school. He called it Solectria I. The paint was still drying on Solectria I as James and his father rushed it to an exhibition hall, where it won first prize in the 1984 Massachusetts state science fair. The next year, as a high school senior, Worden built Solectria II. Ed Trembly, who later became Solectria Corporation’s first full-time employee, remembered Worden bringing a piece of the car into a machine shop in Arlington.

Abstract WEC at Delhi was part of a comprehensive array of Allied sigint units, large and small, which co-operated to ensure good coverage and exchanged news when progress was made. Furthest back were the very large units at Bletchley Park and Arlington Hall, Virginia, formerly a spacious girls school. Both of them tackled the really intractable problems of high-grade crypto systems that had never yet been broken, and fundamentally new materials which had lost us the ability to read a hitherto broken system. At a halfway stage came the large American and British units at Delhi, the former called ‘US 8’, the latter WEC with its two main out-stations: Western Wireless Sub-Centre at Bangalore in south India and Eastern Wireless Sub-Centre at Barrackpore near Calcutta. These were concerned with Japanese Army and Army Air traffic. There was also a large naval sigint unit at Anderson, near Colombo, and smaller ones at Kilindini near Mombasa and on Mauritius. They worked closely with US naval stations at Guam, Leyte and elsewhere, and acted as longstop for signals, travelling 4,000 miles or more, which through the vagaries of short-wave transmission, had evaded the main chain of intercept stations. These, quite apart from the huge US network in the Pacific, ran in a great arc from Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Darwin through Ceylon to Calcutta and south China.
