Le terme archê dans l’ Éthique à Nicomaque III désigne le « principe » d’une chose au sens de ce qui a pouvoir sur elle, la cause motrice des actions. Ce pouvoir de domination est exprimé par l’expression eph’hêmin , et c’est Aristote qui l’introduit pour la première fois dans le débat sur la responsabilité morale. Les chapitres où il discute le concept d’ eph’hêmin sont clairement de nature dialectique, et son analyse se situe très probablement à l’intérieur d’un débat académique sur ces thèmes, dont on trouve des traces dans les Lois . Les disciples de Platon pouvaient trouver des difficultés à comprendre les thèses de Platon sur le rapport entre action et caractère, et Aristote propose une solution originale, fondée sur sa théorie des quatre causes. Contre Platon, il refuse de rejeter la responsabilité des actions et du caractère mauvais sur la cité et les éducateurs, et place l’origine du caractère dans les actions et les choix de l’individu. Avec ce choix, Aristote élargit le problème de la responsabilité humaine de la question traditionnelle de savoir si les méchants sont responsables de leurs mauvaises actions au problème général de la responsabilité de toutes les actions, bonnes ou mauvaises.

In this article, I examine the way Aristotle makes use of the methods Plato labelled as "dialectic". After suggesting a unified interpretation of Plato’s dialectic, I show that Aristotle makes room for them not inside the context of demonstrative science, but at the level of the investigation concerning the principles of such a science. These principles are, for the most part, definitions; and Plato’s dialectical methods are designed to search for and obtain definitions. Although Aristotle, contrary to Plato, seems to distinguish between dialectic and philosophy, he relates both to the same capacity, and he suggests that their methods are identical up to a certain point. Moreover, the cognitive state corresponding to dialectic is, for Aristotle as for Plato, intelligence (nous). Nevertheless, there remain important differences between Plato and Aristotle on this issue: while the dialogical dimension of dialectic is for Plato constitutive of philosophy and implies that the philosophical thought is a perpetual motion, it is according to Aristotle what distinguishes dialectic from philosophy, which must for its part come to a rest; and while philosophy presupposes a rupture with sensation according to Plato, Aristotle envisages it in continuity with sensible experience.

Platon inscrit la vue dans une problematique touchant l'humanite d'une ame divine exilee dans un corps de forme humaine. La vision est le sens par lequel l'ame peut engager une sortie de cet exil pour retrouver son etat originel, mais aussi le sens par lequel l'eloignement vis-a-vis de ce qui est reellement peut encore augmenter. La definition des images speculaires joue dans cette problematique un role decisif ; l'image donnee par le miroir se forme sans aucune reflexion - fait generalement meconnu par l'exegese moderne -, et s'apparente a un veritable engendrement d'une realite de second ordre, une copie imitant un original. Par la, platon s'ecarte resolument de la voie qu'empruntait deja l'optique grecque, encore naissante a son epoque avec hippocrate de chios (contemporain de socrate), qui volatilisait l'image speculaire en une simple vision indirecte. La perspective d'aristote se separe totalement de celle de platon. Preoccupe avant tout par des questions epistemologiques, aristote prend soin de garantir a la vision une verite que le systeme platonicien lui otait. La couleur herite d'une realite nouvelle ; l'acte de la vision se voit octroyer une achronie radicale, qui garantit la simultaneite de l'etat de la chose vue et de la vision effective par l'ame de cet etat. Par cette achronie de la vision, c'est l'unite du temps lui-meme qui se trouve garantie. Mais la theorie d'aristote, developpee dans le de anima et le de sensu en relation etroite avec une problematique epistemologique de verite et de connaissance, se trouvera inoperante lorsqu'il s'agira de rendre comptede phenomenes (arc-en-ciel, halo) que l'optique grecque de l'epoque virtualisait par la reflexion. Aristote sera ainsi amene a delaisser localement sa propre theorie pour adopter une theorie de la vision par une emission hors de l'oeil, emission qu'il avait pourtant severement critiquee.

Cette thèse de doctorat étudie la manière dont Aristote, Platon et Isocrate font du recours à la notion d’empeiria et de la promotion d’une certaine conception de l’expérience, le moyen de se défendre contre l’accusation d’inexpérience qui les vise et de polémiquer entre eux sur la question de l’excellence, dans les domaines théorique, technique et pratique. Cet examen permet d’éclairer sous un jour nouveau la question de l’empirisme antique, en considérant, d’une part, la critique que Platon et Aristote adressent à une certaine conception empirico-sophistique des savoirs et de la pratique, en reconsidérant de l’autre, le supposé empirisme d’Aristote. Si la notion d’empirisme n’a pas d’équivalent en grec, Platon fait de la notion d’empeiria, désignant une forme de pratique non-technique ignorant les causes, un instrument polémique permettant de souligner le défaut de technicité des différentes techniques, que les sophistes se font forts de transmettre. En mettant l’accent sur « l’expérience de la vérité », Platon remet en question l’empirisme de ceux qui ignorent la valeur théorique et pratique de la connaissance des réalités intelligibles. Aristote poursuit la réflexion, en reconsidérant le rôle positif, cognitif et pratique, de l’empeiria comme connaissance acquise à partir de la sensation. Aristote poursuit la critique d’un certain empirisme, dont se rendent coupables tous ceux qui échouent à s’élever à la connaissance de l’universel, tout en déplorant le défaut d’empeiria de ceux dont le savoir est purement théorique. Si comme Platon, Aristote n’est pas un empiriste, parce qu’il refuse de faire de la sensation le principe de la connaissance et le critère du vrai, son rationalisme diffère de celui de Platon, par le rôle reconnue à la sensation et l’expérience dans les domaines théorique, technique et pratique. This study sheds some new lights on ancient empiricism, by investigating, on one hand, Plato’s and Aristotle’s criticism against an empiricist sophistic approach of knowledge and action, and, on the other hand, the so-called Aristotelian empiricism. Although the concept of ‘empiricism’ has no equivalent in Greek, Plato uses the notion of empeiria to designate a non-technical form of action, in order to underlie a lack of technicality and to question the value of what some sophists claim to teach under the name of technai. While insisting on a philosophical kind of experience of truth, Plato criticizes what appears to be the empiricism of those who ignore the theoretical and practical value of the knowledge of intelligible realities. Aristotle goes beyond this stance by re-evaluating positively the role of empeiria, both in its cognitive and practical aspects, as a specific kind of knowledge, derived from sense-perception. He still criticizes the empiricism of those who fail to reach a certain kind of knowledge, namely the knowledge of universals, but also adds a criticism against those who lack the knowledge of particulars acquired through sense-perception and experience.If Aristotle is no more an empiricist than Plato, since he does not recognize sense-perception as the principle of knowledge and as the criterion of the truth, his rationalism is quite different from Plato’s, because of the important role he gives to sense-perception and experience in all areas. This study intends to break through in the direction of some distinctions in ancient philosophy, such as the distinction between Plato’s logical rationalism and Aristotle’s empirical rationalism, which would enable us to re-evaluate the originality of the Ancients on some fundamental issues like the problem of the origin and principle of knowledge and of good action

Cette étude se propose de déterminer la nature et les enjeux véritables de la controverse opposant, sur la question de l'être, Platon et Aristote, aux principaux représentants de la sophistique : Protagoras d'Abdère et Gorgias de Léontium. Quelles sont les conditions de possibilité d'un logos sur l'être i. E. De l'ontologie ? Face à une critique sophistique se réclamant de la lettre du Poème (où se dévoile, pour la première fois, le projet d'une ontologie), prenant prétexte des insuffisances de ce dernier pour récuser toute possibilité d'une ontologie, Platon et Aristote n'ont d'autre choix que d'engager le combat contre le sophiste. En réponse à une phénoménologie protagoréenne pour laquelle il n'y a de science que du phénomène et à une logologie gorgienne qui veut que le seul objet du logos ce soit ce logos lui-même, l'Athénien et le Stagirite entendent bien réhabiliter le projet parménidien i. E. Garantir, contre la fidélité perverse du sophiste, la possibilité même de l'ontologie.

Aristote critique âprement le non-être (ta mê on) de Platon dans la Métaphysique, livre N, chapitre 2 et la Physique, livre A. La critique aristotélicienne est-elle pour autant bien justifiée? De quelle manière Aristote envisage-il le non-être de Platon? Ignorait-il volontairement ou inconsciemment les significations du non-être platonicien? Voici nos réponses à ces questions: (1) Aristote critique injustement le non-être de Platon. (2) Aristote tente en effet d'expliquer le devenir et la génération des choses à raide de la notion du non-être en dunamis et du non-être selon la sterêsis (privation). C'est ce dont ne rend pas compte Platon, car son but dans le Sophiste se différencie de celui de son élève. (3) La proposition (2) incite subséquemment à la proposition (1). ( 4) Il ressort de ce fait que l'originalité aristotélicienne du non-être réside paradoxalement dans l'infidélité vis-à-vis du non-être de son maître

Cette étude vise à porter un nouveau regard sur la méthodologie des cosmologies de Platon et d’Aristote. Malgré les apparences, ces deux cosmologies et les méthodes qui s’y trouvent exposées partagent une même représentation de l’univers qui agit comme un principe guidant leurs pensées. Pour eux, l’univers est un dieu, c’est-à-dire un vivant immortel autarcique. En conséquence, le philosophe doit chercher à rendre son discours le plus conforme possible à l’essence de cet être divin. C’est au moment de déterminer la nature de l’autarcie divine que l’opposition entre les deux projets émerge. Selon Aristote, la représentation platonicienne ne respecte pas l’autarcie divine en rendant l’âme du monde responsable de l’ordre cosmique : cette âme condamnée à une tâche perpétuelle et pénible ne peut être heureuse. Leur différend va encore plus loin. Pour Platon, aucun noûs, divin ou humain, n’est autarcique au sens absolu dans la mesure où toute chose dépend des formes intelligibles séparées. Contre cette représentation de l’univers, Aristote cherche à prouver l’autarcie absolue de l’univers en posant l’existence d’un noûs parfaitement autarcique en Métaphysique Lambda et en le libérant de toute causalité productrice en posant l’existence d’un premier corps éternellement mû d’un mouvement circulaire dans le De caelo. De cette façon, Aristote peut présenter un modèle cosmique conforme à sa représentation du dieu doté d’un corps et d’une âme autarciques. En replaçant ce débat dans son contexte historique, cette étude vise à montrer la validité de cette hypothèse en montrant comment elle oriente l’ontologie, la méthodologie et la recherche des principes du philosophe<br>This study aims to take a new look at the methodology of Plato’s and Aristotle’s cosmologies. In spite of appearances, these two cosmologies and their methods share the same representation of the universe. The universe is a god, that is to say, an autarkic living immortal. Consequently, the philosopher must seek to make his discourse as consistent as possible with the essence of this divine being. It is at the moment of determining the nature of divine autarky that the opposition between the two projects emerges. According to Aristotle, the Platonic representation does not respect divine autarky by making the world soul responsible for the cosmic order: this soul condemned to a perpetual and painful task cannot be happy. Their dispute goes even further. For Plato, no noûs, divine or human, is autarkic in the absolute sense insofar as everything depends on separate intelligible forms. Against this representation of the universe, Aristotle seeks to prove the absolute autarky of the universe by positing the existence of a perfectly self-sufficient noûs in Metaphysics Lambda and freeing it from any productive causality by positing the existence of a first body eternally moved in a circular motion (De caelo). This way, Aristotle can present a cosmic model consistent with his representation of the god: an autarkic living being with a body and a soul. By placing this debate in its historical context, this study aims to show the validity of this hypothesis by showing how it guides the ontology, the methodology, the research of the principles of the philosopher

À cette fin, nous avons tenté de bien comprendre la théorie des Idées à travers les différents dialogues de Platon. Nous avons par la suite identifié certaines critiques qu’Aristote a adressées à son maître en Métaphysique A, et évalué chacune d’entre elles en tentant d’offrir une réponse appropriée à partir des dialogues de Platon. Nous concluons de ce débat entourant la théorie des Idées qu’il faut maintenir l’hypothèse des Idées, malgré les difficultés considérables qu’elles laissent subsister.

It was the translation movement in Islamic civilization which made the works of Greek scholars available to the Muslims.[i] But not only did translators put the various works of Aristotle, Plato, Galen, and other philosophers into Arabic; the works of the Greek philosophers were also classified and catalogued, in which context mention should be made of two works by Abū Naṣr al-Fārābī, in one of which he presented the works of Plato, and in the other the works of Aristotle.[ii] Ḥunayn b. Isḥāq in his letter to ʿAli b. Yaḥyā mentioned individually 129 books that his co-workers had translated with him, and he gives a detailed description of how he obtained the manuscripts and how he compared the manuscripts with each other in order to arrive at correct and complete texts.

Confucius was born over 2,500 years ago and Confucius died at the age of 72 in 479 BCE (Rainey 2010: 21). Though he is called Confucius throughout most of the world, that name is actually the Latinized form of his Chinese name, Kong Fuzi, or Master Kung (Dorothy &amp; Hoobler 2009: 10).Confucianism became the ascendant philosophical system of China for more than 2,000 years. It is a system of thought based on the teachings of Confucius, who lived from 551 to 479 BCE (Dorothy &amp; Hoobler 2009: 10). It has been imbued in every aspect of Chinese life which steeps through its history, state affairs and social life. Most importantly, its ethics aided immensely to shape society and remarkably impacted on daily lives. Consequently, still on any given day one can see hundreds and hundreds of people, most in family groups or tour groups visit Confucius’ birthplace in the Chinese city of Qufu which is considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Confucianism elements also can be seen in Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese cultures due to the expansion of Chinese civilization. Thus, the majority of the three million tourists who visit Confucius’ birthplace within a year are from China, Korea or Japan. Even though in the past decades East Asia has had a blistering phase of modernization, one can still see that Chinese, Korean, or Japanese remnants contending with the ancient morals of Confucius. “Confucius, then, ranks with Abraham, Jesus, Muhammad, and Siddhartha Gautama (better known as the Buddha), and Aristotle and Plato, as one of the founders of modern civilization” (Schuman 2015: 14).

The anthropocentric approach that characterizes all human knowledge has led to a distortion of the relationship with Nature and a view of it as a mere object of law. This approach, presumably originating with Socrates, had solid support in Plato, Aristotle, Ptolemy, and finally, in Catholic patristics, hinging on all disciplines starting from philosophy, psychology, economics, up to law. Dwelling on the latter, examples of legislation that qualify Nature as an object of law are, increasingly over time, the Forest Charter of 1217, the Italian Law No. 1766 of 1927 on civic uses, and furthermore – Art. 812 of the Italian Civil Code, and finally – the cd. Consolidated Environmental Law. This view is, however, changing in some states such as Bolivia, New Zealand, India, Ecuador, Uganda, – the states that through either legislative acts or rulings of supreme courts have begun the process of granting both to Mother Earth in general, and rivers in particular, the status of juridical persons which are endowed with series of very personal rights, which are recognized. This is not the case in Europe, where the relevant legislation continues to consider Nature (or, better, the Environment) as an object of law, therefore as a “thing” from which to draw, albeit within certain limits, utilities of all kinds. By analysing legal instruments potentially useful for a Copernican revolution on this point – in particular, the Kelsenian concept of “legal person”, the meaning of “company” and the European provisions on Artificial Intelligence – the first conclusion is reached: in a relationship that is not only theoretical, but also practical and utilitarian, it would be opportune to start considering, also through acknowledgments in constitutional sources, the Nature as a subject and no longer an object of rights. In this regard, following the general theories of people’s rights, it could be granted certain absolute rights, of which the right to water, restoration and biodiversity are examined in the current article. Hence, we come to the second conclusion, namely, the contrasts that, in Western law, such an approach could suffer, analysing in particular the problems of neo-naturalism and representation.

The stirring words in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence that established ‘Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness’ as ‘unalienable Rights’ served as the inspiration that launched a nation, the United States of America. Yet, more than 240 years later, the relationship between government’s objectives and human happiness is not straightforward, even over the matters of whether it can and should be a government aim. We approach this question not as philosophers, but as social scientists seeking to understand happiness through data. Our work in these pages is intended to enhance understanding of how the well-being of individuals and societies is affected by myriad forces, among them: income, inflation, governance, genes, inflation, inequality, bereavement, biology, aspirations, unemployment, recession, economic growth, life expectancies, infant mortality, war and conflict, family and social networks, and mental and physical health and health care.
