Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe thesis examines the identity of hetairai (courtesans), their literary roles, and their voice by engaging with the production of rhetorical discourses in the erotic letters of the Imperial period, specifically focusing on works such as Alciphron's Letters of Courtesans, Philostratus' Letters, and Aristaenetus' Erotic Letters. The content of these letters not only portrays the personal relationships between the courtesans and their clients, narratives situated in a historical context, but also explores the underlying connections between the epistolographers and their readership. These connections are influenced by the cultural context in which they lived, namely the Second Sophistic. The primary focuses of the research are the construction of the epistolary erotic discourse, the gendered portrayal of the courtesans as literary figures, and the reception of seduction and manipulation techniques at a fictional level. My aim is to investigate how, during the Imperial period, relations of allusion and rewriting contributed to the re-evaluation and consolidation of the figure of hetaira
