Annotation:
Montfode Mount near Ardrossan is a monument with an ambiguous interpretation which has been subject to much discussion over the years. The site is a low mound at the end of a broad plateau of flat ground on a raised beach terrace. Recent housing development offered another opportunity to examine the monument's ditches and surroundings. The results cast doubt on previous interpretations of the monument as a medieval motte. Several groups of truncated features were identified in the vicinity, with some forming a probable double-ring roundhouse, and all of the dateable features were Bronze Age. Beaker pottery was found in one pit. The plan of the ditches and possible palisades surrounding the mound were more fully revealed. The work disturbed one part of the inner ditch and the dating of material from the primary fill also suggested a prehistoric date. It is concluded that the site bears most resemblance to a defended settlement of the later prehistoric period.

Annotation:
In 2003 archaeological fieldwork was conducted at the Hullerhirst lime kilns, to the north-east of Stevenston in North Ayrshire, in advance of construction of the A78 Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston Bypass. Despite past damage, well preserved remains of two lime kilns, juxtaposed in an L-shape, were uncovered. Although they had similar architectural components the configuration of each was strikingly different. Historical records combined with the evidence from the excavations have provided a surprising wealth of detail concerning construction and sequential phasing of the two lime kilns and an insight into the lime production industry as a whole. The unusual design of the Hullerhirst kilns highlights the local and regional diversity in kiln design.

A previously unknown cemetery of 60 graves, a mix of long cists, partial cists and simple earth-dug graves, with some sub-circular enclosure, was located and excavated on the banks of the Montfode. The work carried out in 2003, in advance of the construction of the A78 bypass. Although frequent throughout the south-east of Scotland, few Early Christian burials have been identified in the south-west. This paper discusses this distribution and the potential for similar sites in the region.

Abstract One foggy summer night during the naval manreuvres of 1888, a squadron of the Royal Navy crept up the river Mersey and lowered anchors two hours after midnight. Liverpool and Birkenhead lay at its mercy. Admiral Tryon, in command, announced he would spare the two cities for a ransom of one million pounds. Other towns were not so “lucky”. ‘Greenock is in ashes,’ wrote The Times, ‘Ardrossan has been destroyed, Campbelltown has been punished for some unknown sin-perhaps that of helping to return a Gladstonian at the late election.’ Aberdeen was bombarded, the Forth Bridge (in construction) blown up, Filey laid waste. A distinguished jurist wrote a letter of protest to The Times. Many officers responded, and one of them wrote, ‘the talk about international law is all nonsense.

Annotation:
This area which embraced rich agricultural areas, mining areas and developing textile industries had a similar variety of newspaper developments, with old-established Ayr papers facing challenges from Kilmarnock papers and from other smaller towns wanting their own voice, Arthur Guthrie’s Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald being the most effective example of this. The differences initially were often sectarian with the Free Church resenting Establishment dominance, but increasingly the differences were political, Liberalism versus Conservatism and Unionism, and often linked to local political issues. The farming area of Galloway had in the Galloway Gazette ,the most successful Conservative weekly paper in Scotland by the end of the nineteenth century, while in the border towns further east old-established papers such as the Kelso Mail were having to compete Hawick rivals and challenges and papers such as the Southern Reporter that sought to cross county boundaries.
