Adaptive Mobile Learning Systems (AMLSs) are technological tools that incorporate adaptive learning to generate an individual teaching–learning process for each student. Despite the proliferation of AMLS, their development is often hindered by a lack of standardization and the poor quality of existing software architectures in terms of requirements correctness and coverage. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of software architectures oriented to developing AMLS reported in the state of the art. For this SLR, we searched the ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, Science Direct, Springer, and SCOPUS. Studies published in English that describe and evaluate a software architecture to develop AMLS were included. Twenty-two primary works were relevant to the present study. Based on the obtained results, we have identified key aspects that must be considered in a software architecture proposed for developing an AMLS in terms of requirements, quality attributes, stakeholders, services provided to users, views and architectural styles, components, and implementation technologies. The main finding of this work is the lack of a reference software architecture that considers all the requirements and quality attributes needed for developing AMLS. This gap hinders the effective development and standardization of quality AMLSs, suggesting a critical need for a comprehensive reference software architecture.

Processes for evaluating software architecture (SA) help to investigate problems and potential risks in SA. It is derived from many studies that proposed a plethora of systematic SA evaluation methods, while industrial practitioners currently refrain from applying them since they are heavyweight. Nowadays, heterogeneous software architectures are organized based on the new infrastructure. Hardware and associated software allow different systems, such as embedded, sensor-based, modern AI, and cloud-based systems, to cooperate efficiently. It brings more complexities to SA evaluation. Alternatively, lightweight architectural evaluation methods have been proposed to satisfy the practitioner’s concerns, but practitioners still do not adopt these methods. This study employs a systematic literature review with a text analysis of SA’s definitions to propose a comparison framework for SA. It identifies lightweight features and factors to improve the architectural evaluation methods among industrial practitioners. The features are determined based on the practitioner’s concerns by analyzing the architecture’s definitions from stakeholders and reviewing architectural evaluation methods. The lightweight factors are acquired by studying the five most commonly used lightweight methods and the Architecture-based Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM), the most well-known heavyweight method. Subsequently, the research addresses these features and factors.

Purpose Cities have recognised information and communication technology (ICT) as a major enabler for transforming into “smarter” service providers. Mauritius is considering embarking on a smart island initiative, and as such, the existing towns in Mauritius have a major role to play in the transformation process. This study aims to focus on a systematic analysis of ICT architectures. This study proposes recommendations with regard to ICT infrastructures. This study elicits the contribution of those services towards the overall transformation of the towns, which in turn will form an integral part of the smart island initiative of the country. Design/methodology/approach A first step towards developing a smart ICT architecture is to understand what a smart ICT architecture constitutes of and the frameworks that can be used to develop these architectures. The main objectives of this systematic literature review (SLR) are as follows: understand what a smart ICT architecture consists of and derive a definition that will be used throughout the research for the development of ICT architecture for the smart local councils for Mauritius; analyse various frameworks, architectures and models that have been used in existing literature for the development of smart ICT architectures. Findings This SLR was conducted with a view to investigate ICT architectures with respect to smart governance. An in-depth review, followed by a critical analysis was performed based on the research questions set. The contribution of this study include the formulation of a definition for ICT architecture for smart local councils, which can be applied to any sphere characterised by similar aspects with reference to smart local governance. Albeit existing frameworks such as The Open Group Architecture Framework, Federal Enterprise Architecture and Zachman Framework, it was observed that in most cases, ICT architectures were built from scratch potentially because of specificities of each country/city. Originality/value This work proposes ICT architectures for smart local council.

Software aging and architecture degradation are important areas in software quality assurance. Existing research in these areas has developed mitigation strategies for software aging, other researchers have analyzed strategies for identifying software aging. Regarding architectural degradation, current studies have designed techniques for reducing degradation. However, there appears to be a paucity of studies on the causes of software aging and architectural degradation. Insight into the causes of software aging and architectural degradation can provide a critical perspective and further strengthen the research endeavors on prevention techniques. Using recursive literature review (RLR) and Bootstrapping techniques, this research identifies and analyzes the causes of software aging and architecture degradation in software systems. We found that besides many other causes, architectural degradation is one of the key reasons that cause software aging and acts as a barrier to the sustainability of software architecture.

Green mindfulness seems to play an important role in promoting sustainability in architecture, but discrete areas of knowledge are still widely unknown. This study aimed to explore the publications that exist on the nexus between green mindfulness and architecture, and to find the architectural features that tend to foster green mindfulness. The study conducted a systematic literature review by searching publications from databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, and Thai Journals Online in September 2022. Five authors—one architectural researcher, two architectural professors, and two architects—independently reviewed the full-length articles to confirm their accuracy and objectivity. Eight articles were selected for examination by descriptive analysis showing the publication year, source, and citations of the articles. Thematic analysis was used to find the characteristics of the architectural atmosphere with the potential for fostering green mindfulness. Finally, only one study was found that was truly concerned with architecture and green mindfulness. This publication showed that mass and volume are associated with biophilic design, fascination with biophilic design, and affiliation with biophilic design. Material and object refer to natural material; light is in reference to natural light; and landscape and viewpoint suggest plants, greenery, and natural views, while details regarding color and sound were not explored.

Despite its richness, the research corpus published about Islamic architecture presents some discontinuities in the knowledge of the architecture in the lands ruled by Muslims. Similarly, the dynamics of influence that might have operated between the "monumental" architecture in these lands and their popular architectures are insufficiently addressed. Moreover, the material culture related to the Islamic civilization is almost exclusively studied as a product that has stopped evolving. The architecture produced during Al-Ya'ariba (Al- Ya'rubi) Imamate (1624-1749) is an instance of these understudied topics in the history of Islamic architecture. This research argues that Al-Ya'rubi Imamate is not only an important chapter in the history of Oman, the Arabian Peninsula, Indian Ocean, and Eastern Africa, but also the architecture of this period has created the identity of Omani architecture as we know it today. Nonetheless, there is no architectural production in this era both in the major references and scientific publications of Islamic architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries. Through field research, comparative analysis, and literature review of the history of Omani architecture, especially in the 17th -18th centuries, this research examines the military architecture in Oman during Al-Ya'ariba Imamate including its reference, and its influence on other architectures. It is a contribution to the scientific endeavour to address this specific architectural typology from the perspective of its mechanism of (trans) formation and its continuity of forms until the contemporary architecture of Oman.

Besides a few extra mentions in case studies and conceptual articles, the concept of place brand architecture has received limited attention in the place branding literature. Moreover, the literature lacks a convincing theoretical foundation of the concept of place brand architecture. This lack of scholarly attention for the concept of place brand architecture is striking, because it means that we ('as scholars') have little knowledge about the different manifestations of place brand architectures. From a critical stance, it can even be argued that scholars have failed to scrutinise the scholarly question of under what circumstances a specific set-up of place brand architecture is most suited for a specific type of multistakeholder place branding campaign. To this end, the goal of this article is to contribute to the place branding literature by theorising on what the concept of place brand architecture entails, what the different dimensions of a place brand architecture are, and what ideal types of place brand architectures can be distilled from the literature. These ideal types, which, as the article shows, can also be observed in practice, may help future research to look with specific theoretical lenses at set-ups of place brand architectures.

Talking about architecture culture means talking about buildings and architecture. Architecture is a field of research that is always related to space and form. One of the exciting research topics on architecture is research on Malay architecture. Preserving Malay architecture is an important thing that must be done physically and meaningfully, positively impacting the community's development. The rapid development of information technology (IT) should be part of conservation efforts. IT supports various activities that significantly help conservation efforts. The role of IT in architecture is a significant research opportunity because of still little research on this topic. Thus, we conduct a study and analysis using a systematic literature review methodology to review IT-Architecture research, especially Malay architecture. The systematic literature review methodology consists of six stages, namely: (1) research question definition; (2) literature searching by keywords on literature sources; (3) literature assessment; (4) literature quality measurement; (5) data extraction and synthesis; and (6) research recommendation and suggestion. After going through the quality assessment process, only 37 papers were obtained that were relevant to the topic of IT-Architecture. The most discussed research themes in this literature review search were: (1) building information modeling (BIM) and augmented reality (AR) / virtual reality (VR); (2) BIM and geographic information system (GIS); and (3) BIM application and technology. However, based on literature searches, IT, and Malay architecture are still insufficient. Therefore, the topic of IT and Malay architecture still needs to be studied further in the future.

Objectives. The development and implementation of information and computing architecture and information support for a state central bank digital currency (CBDC) is based on the selection of a software and hardware platform, including technologies and methods for supporting interaction between the elements of the computing complex. The implementation of CBDC technologies significantly depends both on the operational and computing architecture, as well as on the technological characteristics of the means for implementing digital currency information support, which determines the need to develop an appropriate research environment. Thus, the present study sets out to develop an infrastructure for the experimental research environment of the operational and computing architecture used to provide information support for the CBDC.Methods. Digital technologies required for forming an CBDC implementation stack are under development in many countries of the world. The basis for the formation of a software and hardware complex for providing CBDC information support is comprised of theoretical and experimental studies into contemporary digital transaction management tools.Results. The main architectural and technological components that make up the CBDC operational and computing environment comprise operational and computing architectures, blockchain technologies, consensus algorithms, and various forms of digital currencies. Five CBDC operational and computing architecture options are presented. Information models of interaction between the participants in transactions of the central bank digital currency were studied with the aim of establishing the effects of an architectural solution to the characteristics of the computing complex used to provide information support. Features of various digital currencies in the form of accounts and tokens were analyzed.Conclusions. A research environment infrastructure for the CBDC operational and computing information support architecture has been developed. The prerequisites for a comprehensive analysis of the technological characteristics of the CBDC operational and computing environment are set out along with a comparison of operational and computing architecture variants. As a result of the analysis, a summary list of the characteristics of the studied architectures is drawn up. This provides for selecting the optimal operational and computing architecture depending on the requirements imposed on the CBDC.

Background: Several methodologies have been proposed since the first days of software development, from what is now named traditional/heavy methodologies, and later their counterpart, the agile methodologies. The whole idea behind agile methodologies is to produce software at a faster pace than what was considered with plan-based methodologies, which had a greater focus on documenting all tasks and activities before starting the proper software development. Problem: One issue here is that strict agilists are often against fully documenting the software architecture in the first phases of a software process development. However, architectural documentation cannot be neglected, given the well-known importance of software architecture to the success of a software project. Proposed Solution: In this article, we describe the past and current situation of agile methodologies and their relation to architecture description, as well as guidelines for future Agile Methodologies and Architecture Reconciliation. Method: We propose a literature review to understand how agile methodologies and architecture reconciliation can help in providing trends towards the success of a software project and supporting software development at a faster pace. This work was grounded in General Systems Theory as we describe the past, present, and future trends for rapid systems development through the integration of organizations, stakeholders, processes, and systems for software development. Summary of results: As extensively discussed in the literature, we found that there is a false dichotomy between agility and software architecture, and then we describe guidelines for future trends in agile methodologies and reconciliation of architecture to document agile architectures with both architectural decisions and agile processes for any system, as well as future trends to support organizations, stakeholders, processes, and systems.

Abstract This study aims to analyze and identify the principles of sustainability in case studies of several traditional Indonesian architectures, or more specifically known as Nusantara Architecture. This paper discussed the identification, application of principal thinking, analysis, and observation through literature review and hypothesis. In these three case studies, which are the Tongkonan House, Panggung Betawi House, and Gadang House, we found that each building was represented by the choice of forms, materials, functions, and structures, which used the local resources, and as well as the meaning of architectural elements found in the details. During the modernization, the characteristics of the Nusantara Classical Architecture began to be applied to the current architecture which emerged as the Nusantara Contemporary Architecture. Through this paper, we encourage the complexity of architectural design knowledge that reflect the genius-logic, technological development, identity, lifestyle, ethical and aesthetic values of the Indonesian, which have been developed by the ancestors and it is important to always become a consideration and precedent for the architects, planners, and decision-makers in the future.

As a significant component of rural settlements, residential architecture is a record of historical changes containing considerable research value. In the study of residential architectural continuity, the focus is on the inheritance and innovation of traditional residential architectural “genes” in contemporary new residential buildings. Based on a systematic review of the literature, the purpose of this study is to analyze the research trends, categories, and variables relating to architectural continuity in residential buildings, and to build a systematic and comprehensive framework for assessing the architectural continuity of residential buildings in rural settlements based on prior research. This study provides guidance and references for evaluating the design of new residential buildings in rural settlements and for formulating regional planning principles. Using the PRISMA guidelines as the basis for the review method, we filtered the literature from three databases: Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and EI, and studied the 40 articles selected at the end. As can be seen from the results, the literature on architectural continuity in rural settlements has focused more on functional and typological levels and less on the archetypal level of architectural continuity (user behavior). Still, the archetypal level is the most important, because the behavior of housing users directly influences the degree to which housing is continuous in terms of its function and type. The most important finding of this review is that the resident behavior of housing users has a significant influence on the assessment of the continuity of housing architecture, and thus, the continuity of housing architecture in rural settlements must be assessed in conjunction with user behavior.

This article discusses the main concept of sustainable tourism to comprehend the terminology on definition, aspects, and main concept. Furthermore, the discussion continues how architecture plays an important part in achieving the sustainability of tourist attraction areas, and the practical ways that have been done from an architectural perspective. The discussion on the architecture subject is divided into 2 parts: the heritage buildings and new buildings, and how the architectural decision in those areas plays a part in supporting sustainable tourism. In heritage building tourism, it is important to ensure the building is in good condition physically and functional. Adaptive reuse is mainly being used to revitalize heritage buildings. In new buildings, several ways can be done to support sustainability in tourism and it's usually by designing an environmentally low negative impact building's design. If these strategies are applied in building design, it is possible to develop a tourism area that emphasizes the concept of sustainability.

Digital Twins have been in the focus of research in recent years, trying to achieve the vision of Industry 4.0. In the domain of industrial energy systems, they are applied to facilitate a flexible and optimized operation. With the help of Digital Twins, the industry can participate even stronger in the ongoing renewable energy transition. Current Digital Twin implementations are often application-specific solutions without general architectural concepts and their structures and namings differ, although the basic concepts are quite similar. For this reason, we analyzed concepts, architectures, and frameworks for Digital Twins in the literature to develop a technology-independent Generic Digital Twin Architecture (GDTA), which is aligned with the information technology layers of the Reference Architecture Model Industry 4.0 (RAMI4.0). This alignment facilitates a common naming and understanding of the proposed architectural structure. A proof-of-concept shows the application of Semantic Web technologies for instantiating the proposed GDTA for a use case of a Packed-Bed Thermal Energy Storage (PBTES).

Therefore, this paper aims to re-find the definition of traditional architecture by comparing literature review. The research method used is qualitative descriptive analysis method with comparative approach to journal literature reviews. There are 10 national journals and 9 international journals that passed through the selection process and become research samples. The results show that the majority of journals explain that traditional architecture is closely related to the culture of the people in a place that identical to the region or ethnicity. Residential houses as a form of architecture are one of the cultural products of hereditary heritage which are motivated by cultural aspects such as religion, customs, beliefs, philosophies, building process rules, and social aspects to show the social stratification of society through symbols and ornaments. Architectural physical aspects studied in traditional architecture include spatial patterns, structures, materials, main access, space boundaries (walls, roofs, floors), window door openings, orientation, and ornament symbols. In addition, there are also some differences in perception between the contents of the journal in several ways that can be discussed further.

Abstract Health issues in the 21st century have become essential in addition to sustainable development issues. Health is an urgent need to find solutions to problems so that human health is always maintained. Health issues are also influenced by the built environment, one of which is studied in the concept of healthy building. A healthy building has several criteria that can be a point of view to see if the building is healthy or unhealthy. Physiological, psychological and disease transmission problems are the main problems faced by users who use unhealthy buildings. Biomimicry architecture emerged due to technological and scientific advances, in which cross-disciplinary science has become the power of knowledge today. Biomimicry architecture is a design approach that uses nature to solve human problems. Health problems and the need to produce healthy buildings can use biomimicry architecture as a problem-solving method. This paper uses a descriptive qualitative content analysis method on various written references related to biomimicry architecture and how biomimicry architecture produces healthy buildings. The conclusion of this study shows that biomimicry architecture is an approach to using natural inspiration to solve human problems, one of which is building health. Implementing principles found in nature delivers buildings designed with a biomimicry architectural approach to be healthier. That is due to the successful application of natural traits that are always adaptive, efficient, effective and live in line with the environment in the built environment.

AbstractThe purpose of this technical paper is to present a framework for the evaluation of system architectures from a supportability and logistics perspective. A two‐pronged approach was implemented. The initial focus was on investigating the extent to which this issue had been addressed in the literature. Accordingly, this paper also presents a literature survey focused on the assessment and evaluation of system architectures in general, and their assessment and evaluation from a supportability perspective in particular. As part of the second thrust, leading system engineering practitioners and architects from the aerospace industry were interviewed. In this case, the objective was to synthesize the heuristic and experiential aspect of system architecture assessment and evaluation. The above two thrusts, theoretical and heuristic, led to the development of a domain independent evaluation framework represented in the form of an attribute hierarchy. The input information synthesized by this research, which lead to the evaluation framework development is presented in this technical paper. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology is suggested as the preferred approach for the relative evaluation of alternative architectural approaches. Finally, extensions to this framework for increased applicability within specific domains are addressed.

Abstract The presented explorative research focuses on the phenomenological relationship and emotional impact of light within architectural spaces, grounded in a pilot study and literature review. Serving as the foundational framework for a Ph.D., this study aspires to decipher the role of light in Emotional Architecture—a term introduced by the German artist Mathias Goeritz in his 1953 architectural manifesto crafted in Mexico. This multidimensional pilot study employs experiential observation and structured interviews, complemented with qualitative and quantitative documentation, all anchored by literature-based insights. Set in the Barragán House, which served as both the studio and residence for the renowned Mexican architect Luis Barragán since 1948, the study endeavours to elucidate how architectural nuances—like form, materials, colours, and arrangements—affect lighting conditions, subsequently shaping human emotions and experiences. Through twenty-two interviews, the research captured perceived atmospheres and the inherent intentionality of affordances in architecture, revealing a strong correlation between spatial impact on observers and light-related experiences. The interplay between these elements suggests a compelling avenue for implementing Emotional Architecture conducive to both individual and societal sustainable development.

Modern architecture is one of the phenomenal architectural styles because it is the turning point of major changes in classical architecture that has existed for thousands of years. There are several factors that triggered the emergence of modern architecture, namely the result of the industrial revolution in Europe and also the emergence of boredom and dissatisfaction of architectural artists at that time against classical architecture. Just like classical architecture, modern architecture is also divided based on its respective styles and characteristics. The indicators used in analyzing architectural styles can be in the form of material selection, material characteristics, structures, floor plans, building forms, and others. This study will focus on finding out what architectural styles are contained in the selected building object, namely the Geisel Library. The Geisel Library is a library building that is located and at the same time an icon of the University of California. The Geisel Library was chosen because of the unique shape and characteristics of the building and the lack of journals regarding the analysis of its architectural style. Methods of collecting data from research using literature studies from previous journals and building observations from the internet. AbstractOne of the key elements of precision agriculture is the farm management information system (FMIS) that is responsible for data management, analytics and subsequent decision support. Various FMISs have been developed to support the management of farm businesses. A key artefact in the development of FMISs is the software architecture that defines the gross level structure of the system. The software architecture is important for understanding the system, analysing the design decisions and guiding the further development of the system based on the architecture. To assist in the design of the FMIS architecture, several reference architectures have been provided in the literature. Unfortunately, in practice, it is less trivial to derive the application architecture from these reference architectures. Two underlying reasons for this were identified. First of all, it appears that the proposed reference architectures do not specifically focus on FMIS but have a rather broad scope of the agricultural domain in general. Secondly, the proposed reference architectures do not seem to have followed the proper architecture documentation guidelines as defined in the software architecture community, lack precision, and thus impeding the design of the required application architectures. Presented in this article is a novel reference architecture that is dedicated to the specific FMIS domain, and which is documented using the software architecture documentation guidelines. In addition, the systematic approach for deriving application architectures from the proposed reference architecture is provided. To illustrate the approach, the results of multi-case study research are shown in which the presented reference architecture is used for deriving different FMIS application architectures.
