This publication provides considerable material for reflection on the subject of Mediterranean Architecture between Heritage and Innovation, demonstrating the wide range of aspects linked to Architectural Technology, in which one is struck by the flexibility of the disciplinary boundaries with regard to the various meanings that can be applied to the concept of resource. Taken together with the previous publications of Osdotta, this consents one to trace the developments in the third level of education at a particularly critical time for the university institution; the emphasis continues to be placed on the crucial issue of supply/demand of research; the situation is compared with other institutions and with the world of production in this sector, in a present-day scenario dominated by ever more rapid and incisive transformations. The main challenges left to be faced are to improve the quality of PhD courses, after due reflection on the immediate and long-term results, whilst defining more precisely the identitary contents of the disciplinary sector.

Interazione e mobilità per la ricerca – Materiali del 2° seminario Osdotta 2006. This is the second volume of the DOTTA series dealing with research in Architectural Technology doctorates. It documents the 2nd seminar of the Italian PhDs in Architectural Technology, held in Pescara on 14-15-16 September 2006, comprising an account of the event, the materials elaborated in the course of the seminar and the addresses made at the final round table. This reconstruction makes it possible to identify the fields of interest, providing a synoptic overview of the current directions of research trends in our sector, and to compare and confront the contents and methods of the various thematic ambits, underscoring the fundamental research themes most active in this scientific disciplinary sector. Moreover, it also makes it possible to confirm the educational and communication project pursued by Osdotta, both as an educational-administrative structure of an interactive kind, designed to foster a fertile and intense exchange on the lines of research activated within the framework of the doctoral studies in this ambit, and also as an opportunity to identify the problems and expectations of the area, breaking them down into issues concerning the visibility of the scientific community and research into actions useful for the pursuit of even more efficacious results.

This chapter uses social network analysis to explore the web of influence of the four ‘addictive’ industries examined in the book: alcohol, tobacco, food, and gambling. The data are used to paint an overall picture before taking a closer look in subsequent chapters. The four industries form more or less separated clusters, and whereas the alcohol and food industries are very well interconnected, the gambling and tobacco industries are only loosely tied to the others. The network also shows that advertising and marketing sectors and think tanks often act as connecting hubs between the industries. The closer look at the clusters of the four industries shows some important differences. The food cluster is more heterogeneous than the others are; the alcohol cluster contains product-related subclusters; and gambling, as well as tobacco, is smaller and less dense compared with the other two.

Time matters to all of us. It dominates everyday discourse: diaries, schedules, clocks, working hours, opening times, appointments, weekdays and weekends, national holidays, religious festivals, birthdays, and anniversaries. But how do we, as unique individuals, subjectively experience time? The slowness of an hour in a boring talk, the swiftness of a summer holiday, the fleetingness of childhood, the endless wait for pivotal news: these are experiences to which we all can relate and of which we commonly speak. How can a writer not only report such experiences but also conjure them up in words so that readers share the frustration, the excitement, the anticipation, are on tenterhooks with a narrator or character, or in melancholic mourning for a time long since passed which we never experienced ourselves? This book suggests that the evocation of subjective temporal experience occurs in every sentence, on every page, at every plot turn, in any narrative. It offers a new template for understanding narrative time that combines close readings with analysis of the structural overview. It enables new ways of reading Thomas Mann, but also suggests new ways of conceptualizing narrative time in any literary work, not only in Mann’s fiction and not only in texts that foreground the narration of time. The range of Mann’s novels, novellas, and short stories is compared with other nineteenth- and twentieth-century works in German and in English to suggest a comprehensive approach to considering time in narrative.

This chapter examines the role played by woodcutters, carpenters, cabinetmakers, and stonemasons in St. Louis during its earliest years, 1766–1770. Charles E. Peterson, one of the founding fathers of preservation architecture in the United States, wrote three seminal pieces about colonial architecture in the middle Mississippi Valley. Since Peterson, however, there has been no comprehensive study on Illinois Country architecture. Drawing largely on extant manuscripts in the archives of the Missouri History Museum, this chapter compares St. Louis's early buildings with those in other Illinois Country communities (Kaskaskia and Ste. Genevieve), those on the Gulf Coast, and those in French Canada. It also looks at a number of prominent woodworkers in early St. Louis, including Jacques Denis and Pierre Lupien dit Baron. Finally, it considers some of the features of Illinois Country houses and the materials used in their construction, primarily timber.

The focus of this chapter is an evaluation of the developmental origin of the myocardial component of the venous pole. The venous pole has a complex morphological architecture, reflecting its embryological and evolutionary development from several component parts. We describe the developmental changes observed in the architecture of the inflow of the heart and the large vessels that drain into the venous pole. As the formation of the proepicardium and the epicardial-derived cells are intimately connected to the forming inflow, this topic will also be covered. We compare the development of the inflow in chicken, mouse, and human. We then review the results obtained using the two-component genetic mouse system Cre-LoxP with respect to the myocardial components added to the forming cardiac inflow. These data are discussed within the now discriminated first, second, and third heart fields.

This chapter focuses on Cognitive Construction Grammar (CCG), which aims at providing a psychologically plausible account of language by investigating the general cognitive principles that serve to structure the network of language-specific constructions. It traces the foundations of CCG, discusses the major organizing principles and the architecture of CCG, and describes the organization of constructional knowledge in CCG. The chapter also compares CCG with other strands of Construction Grammar to show what ideas they share and where they differ, and looks at the interaction of multiple constructions, the role of networks, and inheritance hierarchies, as well as frequency and productivity from a CCG perspective.

This chapter provides an overview of the notion ofdiscourse-configurationality, a parametric property of languages in which at least one category of the Information Structural notions Topic and Focus is associated with a particular phrase structure configuration. The chapter clarifies the relation between discourse-configurationality and the concept of (non-)configurationality, and it compares discourse-configurationality to the more inclusive notion of discourse-prominence. A survey of the major parameters in cross-linguistic variation is presented, distinguishing different types of discourse-configurationality both within and across its two main manifestations: namely topic-configurationality and focus-configurationality. The concluding part outlines several prominent theoretical approaches to the syntax of discourse-configurationality, raising issues of grammatical architecture that centre around the hypothesis of the Autonomy of Syntax.

Chapter 4 provides a general explanation of the early modern creation of an antiquarian historical interpretation framework for Islamic buildings. Seventeenth-century Rodrigo Caro’s description of Seville ‘Arab stones’, included in his book Antigüedades y principado de la ilustríssima ciudad de Sevilla (1634), provides a valuable example that is used to introduce this historiographical turn. Upon this case, the antiquarian treatment of Spanish Islamic buildings is compared with other contemporary genres of writing dealing with Islamic architecture (traveller’s books, pilgrims’ books, geographical descriptions, etc.), as well as with other national antiquarian traditions (Italy, England). This is done in order to obtain a clarification of the ideological basis of the historical dislocation of these monuments from a coetaneous perception to their anachronic connection to the time of the ancient history of the nation.

This chapter compares confinement conditions in American prisons today to those in the mid- to late twentieth century, and the reasons for this evolution. Other topics considered include changes in (a) inmate rights and privileges, (b) priorities placed on safety and management, (c) program availability, and (d) managerial controls over inmates (both coercive and remunerative). Also provided is an overview of improvements in prison architecture and technology (e.g., the construction of smaller prisons with heavier reliance on electronic surveillance) and of the movement to “professionalize” correctional officers. Important themes include the negative impact of rising prison populations on the delivery of medical and mental health services; the worsening physical health of prisoners; and greater use of long-term administrative segregation despite its possible influences on mental and physical deterioration.

This chapter investigates the impact of neoliberalism on historic preservation. Using the stories of the Medinah Temple and Tree Studios in downtown Chicago as an example, the chapter explains how adaptive reuse has become one of the favored strategies for public officials and private developers to capture the profit associated with the built heritage. While renovating and reusing historic buildings is an advance compared to the wholesale demolition, the chapter reveals the danger of the strategy to undermine the architectural integrity of historic structures and compromise their original socially and culturally oriented functions. It highlights the tension between seeing historic preservation as public good and as a tool for economic benefit in the neoliberal era.

Explore the contemporary culture and traditional customs of Singapore and Malaysia in a volume that belongs on shelves in every high school and public library. Culture and Customs of Singapore and Malaysia examines all aspects of contemporary life in these two geographically close and historically and culturally connected nations, starting with the people fighting to maintain a balance between the new and the traditional. The book shows how religion has evolved through time in the two nations and examines how literature and traditional crafts thrive today. It highlights the performing arts and entertainment, noting how Western culture has influenced and shaped new customs. Housing and architecture, both modern and traditional, are discussed, along with cuisine and fashion. Students can use the book to analyze gender roles and family life. They can also read about the ways in which festivals are celebrated and can compare and contrast leisure activities of Singapore and Malaysia with their own. The volume concludes with a look to the future of these two evolving countries, both moving toward modernity, but still holding on to the traditions of the past.

This volume presents the findings of three seasons of excavation in the 1980s at Kom el-Hisn, "the mound of the fortress," in the northwest Nile Delta. This provincial community was often in the orbit of Memphis, the capital and administrative center of Egypt's Old Kingdom period. Small areas of occupations of the First Intermediate and early Middle Kingdom periods were also excavated. One of the goals of the excavations was to complement and compare the substantial ancient textual record of this era with Kom el-Hisn's archaeological record because such evidence is sparse for Lower Egypt between about 2500 and 1800 BC. The findings presented here reveal the complexity of small Old Kingdom settlements in the context of the Memphite state organization and shed light on the changing relationships of this administrative center with its provincial communities. Kom el-Hisn's faunal, floral, lithic, and architectural remains are presented and discussed in detail, as are some theoretical and methodological issues relevant to this research.

This chapter analyzes the different idioms, arguments, and rhetorical strategies Greek-speaking Byzantines used to discuss canopies in their churches. It compares the modern academic conventions of naming and describing canopies as ciboria with conventions that are related to the Byzantine tradition. Such an analysis links some of scholarship’s evident lacunae and misunderstandings to the inception of Byzantine studies and its antiquarian approach starting in the sixteenth century and solidified by positivistic scholarship since the Enlightenment. Because the word ciborium was used less often than previously thought and other descriptive and metonymic words also referred to canopies, in this study, the modern term canopy is used as it points to the architectural form. This chapter also highlights the Byzantine intellectual elite’s awareness of the terminology related to canopies as a carrier of complex theological ideas that were deeply associated with the materialization and meaning of canopies in the Byzantine church.

This book offers a legal and political theory of the European Union. Many political and legal philosophers compare the EU to a federal union. They believe that its basic laws should be subject to the standards of constitutional law. They thus find it lacking or incomplete. This book offers a rival theory. If one looks more closely at the treaties and the precedents of the European courts, one sees that the substance of EU law is international, not constitutional. Just like international law, it applies primarily to the relations between states. It binds domestic institutions directly only when the local constitutions allow it. The member states have democratically chosen to adapt their constitutional arrangements in order to share legislative and executive powers with their partners. The legal architecture of the European Union is thus best understood under a theory of dualism and not pluralism. According to this internationalist view, EU law is part of the law of nations and its distinction from domestic law is a matter of substance, not form. This arrangement is supported by a cosmopolitan theory of international justice, which we may call progressive internationalism. The EU is a union of democratic peoples, that freely organize their interdependence on the basis of principles of equality and reciprocity. Its central principles are not the principles of a constitution, but cosmopolitan principles of accountability, liberty, and fairness,

Commissioned by the English East India Company to write about contemporary nineteenth-century Delhi, Mirza Sangin Beg walked around the city to capture its highly fascinating urban and suburban extravaganza. Laced with epigraphy and fascinating anecdotes, the city as ‘lived experience’ has an overwhelming presence in his work, Sair-ul Manazil. Sair-ul Manazil dominates the historiography of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century compositions on Delhi in Persian and Urdu, and remains unparalleled in its architecture and detailed content. It deals with the habitations of people, bazars, professions and professionals, places of worship and revelry, and issues of contestation. Over fifty typologies of structures and several institutions that find resonance in the Persian and Ottoman Empires can also be gleaned from Sair-ul Manazil. Interestingly, Beg made no attempt to ‘monumentalize’ buildings; instead, he explored them as spaces reflective of the sociocultural milieu of the times. Delhi in Transition is the first comprehensive English translation of Beg’s work, which was originally published in Persian. It is the only translation to compare the four known versions of Sair-ul Manazil, including the original manuscript located in Berlin, which is being consulted for the first time. It has an exhaustive introduction and extensive notes, along with the use of varied styles in the book to indicate the multiple sources of the text, contextualize Beg’s work for the reader and engage him with the debate concerning the different variants of this unique and eclectic work.

Annotation:
Estimated at numbering between eight and nine thousand, parish churches containing at least some medieval building fabric are ubiquitous in the English landscape. Yet, despite their quotidian familiarity, parish churches have not, by and large, been treated consistently or systematically as deserving of the attention of art historical study. This collection of essays comes out of a conference held at the Courtauld Institute of Art in June 2017 and focuses on the two centuries between 1200 and 1399. This period represents the most notable lacuna in scholarship, even though the parish church was fully solidified as an administrative category and arguably as a building type. Compared with the smaller corpus of the Romanesque period or the late medieval church after 1400, which draws on greater availability of documentary evidence in the form of churchwarden accounts, these two centuries have been historically understudied. The ten diverse essays contained within this volume explore the art and architecture of parish churches through a variety of lenses, methodologies, and perspectives, ranging from (re)considerations of the very definition of the parish church to phenomenological explorations of their component parts, as well as case studies of their decorative schemes. An Afterword by Paul Binski reflects upon his 1999 essay, ‘The English Parish Church and its Art in the Later Middle Ages: A Review of the Problem’ and considers the place of anthropology in our developed study of the parish church.

Compares monumental designs and performance spaces of Christian, Buddhist, and related sanctuaries, exploring how brain networks, animal-human emotions, and cultural ideals are reflected historically and affected today as “inner theatre” elements. Integrating research across the humanities and sciences, this book explores how traditional designs of outer theatrical spaces left cultural imprints for the inner staging of Self and Other consciousness, which each of us performs daily based on how we think others view us. But believers also perform in a cosmic theatre. Ancestral spirits and gods (or God) watch and interact with them in awe-inspiring spaces, grooming affects toward in-group identification and sacrifice, or out-group rivalry and scapegoating. In a study of over 80 buildings – shown by 40 images in the book, plus thousands of photos and videos online – Pizzato demonstrates how they reflect meta-theatrical projections from prior generations. They also affect the embodied, embedded, enacted, and extended (4E) cognition of current visitors, who bring performance frameworks of belief, hope, and doubt to the sacred site. This involves neuro-social, inner/outer theatre networks with patriarchal, maternal, and trickster paradigms. European Churches and Chinese Temples as Neuro-Theatrical Sites investigates performative material cultures, creating dialogs between theatre, philosophy, history, and various (cognitive, affective, social, biological) sciences. It applies them to the architecture of religious buildings: from Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant in Europe, plus key sites in Jerusalem and prior “pagan” temples, to Buddhist, Daoist, Confucian, and imperial in China. It thus reveals individualist/collectivist, focal/holistic, analytical/dialectical, and melodramatic/tragicomic trajectories, with cathartic poetics for the future. Brain Spirits: European Churches and Chinese Temples as Theatrical Sites compares the monumental spaces of Christian, Buddhist, and Daoist sanctuaries, exploring how brain networks, animal-human drives, mimetic emotions, and cultural (patriarchal, maternal, or trickster) ideals are reflected historically and affected in visitors today as “inner theatre” elements. This book will increase the reader’s awareness of how each person’s choices within a religious building (or in other performance situations)—observing, engaging with, or questioning artworks, services, and ideologies—may alter or perpetuate melodramatic temptations of religious and political traditions: inter-group conflict, scapegoating, and self-sacrifice. Lessons from this cross-cultural, cognitive neuro-performance auto-ethnography apply to the communally binding, yet dangerous brain spirits evoked by today’s secular, mass, and social media as well.
