Transparent design is a reverse space processing method in architectural design that involves partially or completely removing the original division of space, thereby making the entire space more diverse. The application of transparent design methods mainly includes the processing of two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces, and it involves aspects like building entities, design spaces, design materials, and building structures. Transparent design is a popular form of modern architectural design. It transforms the space and reflects the beauty of the space, allowing light, sight, and air to freely blend throughout the space. At the same time, architectural design is also consistent with the idea of “form follows function” advocated by contemporary architecture, so it has been gradually growing in popularity in architectural design. This article presents a detailed analysis of transparent design, including the types of transparent design, structural model design in transparent design, and the application strategies of transparent design in architecture.

Technological advancements have created new dimensions in various fields, including architecture. The widespread use of information technology has particularly transformed architectural designs. In architectural design processes, methods and tools have diversified beyond traditional approaches, incorporating computer-aided programs, computational functions with plugins, and even contemporary artificial intelligence (AI)-supported software and applications tailored to specific needs. It is inevitable that AI-supported designs will increasingly feature in the future of architecture. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of AI applications in architectural design. To this end, a bibliometric analysis was conducted on 137 articles related to artificial intelligence and architectural design from the period 1991-2024, sourced from the Web of Science (WoS) database. The analysis focused on main topics, keywords, authors, sources, highly cited articles, and countries. The selected articles were analyzed using VOSviewer to examine the use of AI applications in architectural design. Quantitative analyses providing an overview of the topic are presented in tables, graphs, and maps. It has been determined that at least 30% of the studies were conducted in the field of architecture. It was found that studies on the subject have rapidly increased since 2020. The continued growth of AI usage across all fields is expected to extend into architectural design as well. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to address AI in architectural design education to align with these advancements. Finally, the paper discusses forward-looking recommendations on how to incorporate AI into architectural design education.

Digital technology and its use in architecture support the construction industry in transitioning to more sustainable building development. Digital technology is widely taught in architecture programs in China, but there are few consistent strategies for combining digital architectural design with traditional architectural design in architectural education. Consequently, sustainable design concepts are not included in digital architectural design courses, and thus architectural education is not concerned with sustainable development. In this paper, we focus on the teaching of digital design in architecture and investigate how digital architectural design teaching can incorporate sustainability. Data from 15 universities were qualitatively analyzed, leading to the development of four models of teaching digital architectural design. Development of the models revealed that there are three increasing levels in digital architectural design teaching and that there is a close relationship between the teaching level and the transfer of architectural knowledge. This recognition led to the development of a single comprehensive model of digital architectural design teaching that is universally applicable. This research increases our understanding of digital architectural design teaching in architecture programs and strengthens the multi-level connections between digital architectural design teaching and designing and constructing sustainable built objects.

Blockchain technology has gained popularity in various applications, including finance transactions and beyond. However, developing blockchain application systems is challenging due to stringent quality requirements, such as performance, scalability, and security. Software architecture plays a critical role in realizing key quality requirements. Nonetheless, little work has been performed on software architectures for blockchain applications since blockchain application development is still a new field. This paper proposes twelve architectural patterns for blockchain application software architectures based on 400 cross-industry real-world applications available on the Internet. We determine the key components of each application guided by a blockchain application taxonomy we developed. We then identify typical architectural patterns from the interactions of these components guided by well-known software patterns, such as peer-to-peer, layered, pipe-filter, and access control. Based on the roles of these patterns, we organize them into four architectural views comprising four structural, two interactional, four transactional, and two security patterns. We describe each pattern in detail using a standard form and demonstrate the patterns through a real-world blockchain application. The use of patterns can be valuable in addressing blockchain’s unique challenges, but creativity remains essential in crafting innovative solutions. Mixing architectural patterns according to varying requirements can help developers communicate effectively.

This thesis examines the relationship between the practice of architectural design and the media through which it is represented. It makes a consistent critical appraisal of the philosophical presumptions under which architectural theory is made, in particular, the relationship between theories of expression and representation. The thesis presents seven distinct projects by the author which developmentally explore the degree to which architecture is able to represent the sublime - in particular through the concept of horror. In this instance horror emerges as a category of excess that supervenes the uses of the term in the genres of film and literary studies. Within the thesis horror describes an (impossible) objective for representation The thesis argues that the environment within which these philosophical questions of 'effect' may most resonantly be explored is, ultimately, digital media. The author draws on contemporary commentary by Jacques Derrida and Georges Bataille, in particular Derrida's discussion of the Parergon and contemporary discussion of l'informe, the informal to support these arguments. It is within the apparently 'real' environments of virtual reality that the presentation of the mise-en-scene of horror may be explored. Immersive digital environments, it is argued, provide an appropriate level of freedom and direction for the exploration of the spatial experience of the abyss. The thesis concludes by presenting observations on the antinomy of aspirations that any materialist theory of architectural practice must attend to when working within digital media.

Based on a multidisciplinary literature revue, the objective of the thesis is to analyze the impact of three media, namely the freehand sketch, the physical model and the software (here, Sketch-UP 7.0) on architectural design. 35 students in architecture have participated in the study. A mixed evaluation methodology is proposed to evaluate the impact, namely quantitative measures of visual-spatial abilities (psychometric test), and the cognitive load management (secondary task technique) during the design, and also qualitative measures to evaluate the cognitive load management (NASATLX) and the quality of projects generated (consensual assessment technique). The results show no significant statistical difference between the three media for the cognitive load management, and the project quality. Furthermore, no correlation was found between the cognitive load management and the project quality.

Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1989.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 173-174).<br>The act of designing in architecture is a complex process. Many designers, when probed for reasons to explain their actions, are either unable to answer questions, or provide explanations that are not true descriptions of their actions. Frequently the designer will answer that his or her reason for making a particular design decision is based on 'feeling' or 'intuition.' Under this model the design process assumes a 'mystical' aura. Architectural designers can create, yet are unable to say how they do so. Often that which can be explicitly discussed by the designer is the least significant part of his or her design process. It is unlikely that designers are 'channeling' information from cosmic sources. Rather, they are working with knowledge that is largely tacit. This thesis attempts to de-mystify the process of architectural design. Through a close scrutiny of existing literature, incorporation of personal experience as an architect, and testing of theories with lay, novice, and expert designers a theory of design methodology is proposed.<br>by Glenn E. Annotation:
This research offers a new approach to architectural design by suggesting that artificial light could be included in the architect’s conceptual toolbox. An exploration of the lighting techniques currently used in interior design shows a direct connection between artificial light and architectural design. This is followed by an investigation of innovative lighting applications that are based on new materials. These materials either emit light themselves or can be connected to light in different ways to radiate light. For this thesis the word lighterials has been coined to distinguish them from opaque, non-light-related materials. After lighterials have been accepted as an architectural group of forms, the architectural space is analysed in terms of its most important elements with reference to artificial lighting and interior architecture. Within this scope a new element, poetics, is introduced, bringing the two design fields even closer together. The question is asked: How can lighterials influence architectural design, including the poetics of a space? The question is tackled by three different studies, a pilot study, a case study and interviews, which employed architecture students, lighting design students and professional architects respectively. The first study provides information about future trends around lighterials and the second about how lighting designers could use lighterials. In the third and main study, using the methodologies of think-aloud protocol, structured interviews and questionnaires, the architects indicate through their use of lighterials in design how lighterials could influence architectural space and its poetics. From analysis of these studies it is apparent that these new lighting applications have the potential to completely change or to enhance an architect’s design. Further, the incorporation of lighterials in design can dramatically change the user’s experience of a space. In its examination of new characteristics of light as architectural form this research offers a unique contribution to the field.

Annotation:
This thesis examines the architectural magazine's contribution to the writing of modern architectural history using the magazine Architectural Design (AD) as a case study. There are four main narratives to this research, one "grand" and three "micro"; The overarching grand narrative (or meta-narrative) is the proposal to replace the existing art historical formulation of architectural history with a more holistic understanding of history based on power struggles in the field of architecture. This strategy is derived from an application of Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework to the field of architectural cultural production. The position of the architectural magazine as an institution in the construction of the architectural profession, and the ever-changing definition of architecture is one underlying micro-narrative. The introduction discusses the role that the architectural magazine played in the emergence of the modern architectural profession, alongside other institutions, specifically the academy and professional bodies. The central, and largest, micro-narrative is a critical history of the magazine Architectural Design from 1954 to 1972. Brief biographies of its editors and a background to the magazine from its inception in 1930 up to 1953 precede this by way of contextualisation. This history of AD discusses the content and context of the magazine and traces its shift from a professional architectural magazine to an autonomous. "little" magazine, focussing on several key structural themes that underpin the magazine. Throughout, the role that AD played in the promotion of the post-war neo-avant-garde, in particular the New Brutalists and Archigram, is documented and the relationships between the small circle of people privileged to produce and contribute to the magazine, and AD's rivalry with the Architectural Review are highlighted. The final micro-narrative is a reading of post-war modem architectural history from 1954 to 1972 through the pages of AD, tracing the rise and demise of modem architecture in terms of three defining shifts from the period evident in the magazine: "high to low"; "building to architecture"; and "hard to soft". This period also coincides exactly with the life of the Pruitt Igoe housing blocks in SI. Louis whose demolition, according to Jencks, represented the death of modern architecture. A growing post-modern sensibility in architecture is manifest in the magazine through an increasing resistance to modernist thinking. This study consciously employs post-modern methodologies to a period of modern architecture in an attempt to disturb modernist mythologies that have ossified into history.

Due to global warming and depletion of fossil fuels, alternative sustainable fuel technology is essential. As a consequence of this need, many automotive original equipment manufacturers have started manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) as sustainable, zero-emission solution. This paper evaluates different architectures for EV design to establish a preferred architecture. A detailed literature study is outlined to evaluate production and concept proposals of many original equipment manufacturers, student projects, and autonomous electric cars. The different architectural aspects of these designs, such as mechanical and electrical technologies, are discussed. Starting with initial schematics, a theoretical model is developed for each of the EV drive train architectures. The study uses advanced modeling techniques to compare these architectures. Different drive train architectures are compared in the contexts of functionality, operation, manufacturability, and modularity. The preferred architecture was developed using advanced tools such as virtual modeling to establish operational sequences for the components that make up an EV. In addition, product data management software was used as management tool to document changes during the architecture’s development. Recommendations and discussions on a selection of vehicle architectures are detailed along with those for a preferred architecture.

In the literature, architectural smells are identified mainly by relying on the source code or other implementation artifacts. However, architectural smells could be detected at design time, even before employing implementation efforts and preventing them from being reflected at the system implementation. This research investigates how software architecture descriptions realized through architecture description languages (ADLs) can be used to identify architectural smells at design time. This work focuses on how architectural smells manifest and can be detected in SysADL, an ADL that allows describing both structure and behavior of software architectures using standardized diagrams from the OMG’s SysML language.

Many important technical innovations occur through changes to existing system architectures. To manage the balance between performance gains by the innovation and the risk of change, companies estimate the degree of architectural change an innovation option could cause due to change propagation throughout the entire system. To do so, they must evaluate the innovation options for their integration cost given the present system architecture. This article presents a new algorithm and metrics based upon eigenvector rotations of the architectural connectivity matrix to assess the sensitivity of a system architecture to introduced innovations, modelled as perturbations on the system. The article presents studies of the impact of changes on synthetic system architectures to validate the method. The results show that there is no single architecture that is the most amenable to introduced innovation. Properties such as the density of existing connections and the number of changes that modify intra- or inter-module connections can introduce global effects that are not known in advance. Hierarchical modular system architectures tend to be relatively stable to introduced innovations and distributed changes to any architecture tends to cause the largest eigenvector rotations.

This paper presents how complex system architecture lifecycles, such as that of cars, follow a similar S-curve shaped path as that of individual technological innovations. By applying this theory we show that today’s automotive industry has started a new chapter of architectural competition with similarities to its early history from 1885–1915 when steam, electric and internal combustion engine cars were competing to dominate the automotive market. Taking a historical perspective, we find that firms that organize their development activities to focus on bringing about architectural innovation are better placed in succeeding in the future market until a new dominant architecture emerges. The architecture lifecycle framework used in this study is constructed by means of a performance index. The index scores the performance of 91 cars of various architectures based on five overall system variables: power, weight, maximum velocity, fuel efficiency and the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Depicting architectural performance over time helps identify periods of architecture competition and dominance where historical agents to change can be identified. The key factors that brought about architectural competition in the early 1900’s involved a series of innovation breakthroughs in engine and fuel technologies. Today, a new wave of power train innovations is being triggered primarily by environmental regulatory demands to reduce vehicle emissions. Future research lies in presenting a methodology for selecting vehicle architectures early on in the product development cycle that are best suited for the market going forward based on a manufacturer’s goals and a cost-benefit analysis.

Abstract This paper presents an in-depth analysis of architectural behavior within the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) Crowd, focusing on its impact on prediction accuracy. The concept of the ANN Crowd is introduced as a means to make predictions from small training set sizes. A single architecture has not proven robust enough in previous studies, so 189 different architectures are employed in the crowd, introducing diversity. Convergence is stopped early to prevent overfitting for each architecture. Therefore, the individual architectures are replicated 100 times with different initial weights. In this manner, the crowd size is increased to 18,900 total voices. Using the Architecture Behavior Interpretation scheme, this study explores how variations in architectural compositions influence the overall performance of the ANN Crowd. Employing One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) as the primary statistical tool, the research examines differences among architectural groups, maintaining a significance level of 0.05 throughout the analysis. The investigation explores two key questions: (1) whether architectural variations categorized as ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’ based on Normality, Centrality, and Width exhibit statistically significant differences in prediction accuracy, and (2), if the number of nodes within architectural groups significantly impacts the accuracy of prediction models in the ANN Crowd. The study provides valuable insights into the intricate relationship between architectural characteristics and prediction accuracy, offering implications for building ANN Ensembles and enhancing predictive modeling processes.

The paper delves into the intricate relationship between architectural critique and design practice within the realm of transnational architecture endeavors, specifically focusing on the global infrastructure development facilitated by the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). As a monumental project spanning numerous countries and continents, the BRI has sparked a wave of architectural interventions that transcend national boundaries. These endeavors offer a unique opportunity to explore how the circulation of design ideas and practices across nations manifests in tangible architectural artefacts, which have thus far remained on the periphery of mainstream architectural discourse. By drawing upon diverse case studies from different parts of the world, where various stakeholders such as governments, investors, communities, and architectural professionals are involved, this research examines the tensions that arise between global and local architectural practices, the negotiation of cultural identities and the adaptation of design standards to accommodate diverse geographical and sociocultural contexts. Through this investigation, the contribution critically evaluates and challenges the oversimplification of global architecture through taxonomic scientific frameworks, rejecting the notion that urban architecture is a static and universally applicable knowledge object that can be studied using a singular framework. Instead, it sheds light on the complex dynamics at play in the creation of built environments within a multi-dimensional globalized context. The final aim is to promote the development of new concepts and theoretical perspectives that foster a more cosmopolitan and inclusive understanding of architecture and urbanism.

The study of architecture, urban planning and design at technical universities primarily offers a rational, technology- and practice-oriented education. The offer of a conceptual and socially critical approach to creation is only represented to a low degree. Students create projects that take into account the latest technical, environmental and architectural trends, but receive few assignments or conceive their designs as specific philosophical statements critically examining current social and political phenomena, whether on a local or trans-regional scale. By implementing courses and seminars with an emphasis on various visual media, students are given the opportunity to analyse issues in spatial themes and statements that they cannot apply in standard architectural design. The authors examine alternative methods in architectural education at technical universities involving intermedia visual arts. They investigate different forms of teaching in selected universities in the Central European context. The article is supplemented with case studies from the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia.
