The present doctoral thesis outlines a new model in psychological aesthetics, named the Information-Load Model. This model asserts that aesthetic appreciation is grounded in the relationship between the amount of information of stimuli and people’s capacity to process this information. This relationship results in information load, which in turn creates emotional responses to stimuli. Aesthetic appreciation corresponds to an optimal degree of information load. Initially, the optimal degree is relatively low. As an individual learns to master information in a domain (e.g., photography), the degree of information load, which corresponds to aesthetic appreciation, increases. The present doctoral thesis is based on three empirical papers that explored what factors determine aesthetic appreciation of photographs and soundscapes. Experiment 1 of Paper I involved 34 psychology undergraduates and 564 photographs of various motifs. It resulted in a set of 189 adjectives related to the degree of aesthetic appreciation of photographs. The subsequent experiments employed attribute scales that were derived from this set of adjectives. In Experiment 2 of Paper I, 100 university students scaled 50 photographs on 141 attribute scales. Similarly, in Paper II, 100 university students scaled 50 soundscapes on 116 attribute scales. In Paper III, 10 psychology undergraduates and 5 photo professionals scaled 32 photographs on 27 attribute scales. To explore the underlying structure of the data sets, they were subjected to Multidimensional Scaling and Principal Components Analyses. Four general components, related to aesthetic appreciation, were found: Familiarity, Hedonic Tone, Expressiveness, and Uncertainty. These components result from the higher-order latent factor Information Load that underlies aesthetic appreciation.

The contradiction between architecture&rsquo
s &ldquo
autonomy&rdquo
, its existence as an entity with its own &ldquo
disciplinary specificity&rdquo
- and its social &ldquo
engagement&rdquo
, its involvement in culture, ideology and economy, has been the subject of numerous discussions in architectural discourse, initially in Europe and later in North America. It is argued in this thesis that although &ldquo
autonomy&rdquo
and &ldquo
engagement&rdquo
seem contradictory to each other, architecture&rsquo
s &ldquo
critical status&rdquo
is rooted in this contradiction. Autonomy is regarded as one of the essential sides of architecture&rsquo
s dual position. This suggests that the in-between, or in Stanford Anderson&rsquo
s terms, &ldquo
quasi-autonomous&rdquo
status of architecture can only be sustained through its existence as an entity that has a certain degree of autonomy. Autonomy is an agent for architectural discourse to isolate architecture from its involvement in the external reality and increase awareness within the discipline by concentrating on its specific knowledge. Autonomy aids architecture to pretend to be &ldquo
detached&rdquo
while in reality it is &ldquo
engaged&rdquo
. To focus on the autonomous dimension of architecture, to search for architecture&rsquo
s own intrinsic qualities, helps to produce knowledge within the discipline and provides a &ldquo
critical distance&rdquo
for architecture to resist any &ldquo
external authority&rdquo
. Thus this thesis intends to explore the potentials of the conceptualization and problematization of &ldquo
autonomy&rdquo
in architecture and its employment as a critical tool by architectural discourse to re-assess architectural practice. The private house projects designed by Boran Ekinci in Turkey are exemplified and utilized for the re-conceptualization of the term and enable the transfer of the discourse related with autonomy to the local context where the issue hardly gained a popularity. By doing so, both the appreciation of autonomy in general and reappreciation of architecture in Turkey are aimed.

Annotation:
With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the 9/11 attacks, the landscape of the freedom of religion has changed. The issues now facing freedom of religion varies greatly from the issues that the drafters of the universal declaration of human rights faced after World War II. In the light of the new issues that States face in the intersection of religion and societal interest, scholars have criticized the European Court of Human Rights to give too much leeway to the States in determining how the human rights should be implemented, by using the doctrine of margin of appreciation. Critics of the margin of appreciation claim that it is based on culture relativism and that the doctrine undermines the universality of the human rights. In order to decide if the margin of appreciation has indeed led to a relativization of the human rights I compared it to the jurisprudence of the UN Human Rights Committee and its use of the Syracusa principles. My conclusion is that the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights cannot be considered to be based on culture relativism. The jurisprudence of the UN Human Rights Committee is not entirely universal given that the contracting states can make reservation to articles in the ICCPR, which excludes the UN Committee’s jurisdiction of that specific provision in the treaty. Both the European Court and the UN Comittee has to balance their jurisdiction with sovereignty of the its member states and therefore it is inevitable that some leeway must be given to the member states, First of all, to decide whether the margin of appreciation is a sympton of culture relativity in a specific case, the Europan Court has to improve their way of describing and justifying how the margin of appreciation is used. Secondly, I will discuss the necessity to review the relationship between universalism and culture relativism in order to better understand international human rights law.

This thesis examines foreclosure sales of single-family homes in eight communities in the Boston Metro area and the price appreciation from purchase of a foreclosed property through to a subsequent fair market, arms-length sale. The post foreclosure sale price appreciation of the foreclosed properties is compared with price appreciation of fair market, arms length sales to discern the effects of a foreclosure on future price appreciation. RESULTS The magnitude of the price appreciation may be positively influenced, or in part, caused by investment to remediate defects in the property or to cure problems due to endemic disinvestment. On the other hand, it is quite probable there is a negative effect due to intractable problems and or stigma which cannot be cured with money or sweat equity; i.e. socio-economic factors such as changes in crime and poverty rates, macroeconomic conditions, floods or other natural mishaps. Price appreciation, as measured through actual repeat sales, from 8 cities in the Boston Metro area, indicate foreclosed properties appreciate more rapidly than normative, arm's length transactions in those same markets. The results were unclear for sales pairs initiated in 1991-1994, during a relatively flat market. However results are significant with sales pairs initiated in 1995-1997 and 1998-2000, during the real estate recovery and over various holding periods up to five years, using repeat sales data from 1987 through 2007. The Foreclosed Sale Pairs initiated from 1995-2000 dominated the Market Sale Pairs initiated during the same years over the two to five year holding periods.

In recent decades the canon of environmental aesthetics has expanded beyond its primary concern of understanding what is beautiful in the fine arts to the appreciation of natural and cultural landscapes. Corresponding with society's growing interest in conservation, environmental aesthetics has emerged as relevant to many conservation discussions. The preservation and interpretation of cultural landscapes is complicated by resources that are in a constant state of change. Traditional cultural landscape preservation practices have had mixed results. A focus on interpretation rather than preservation is generally considered a strategy for improving cultural landscape practices. Applying theories developed in the field of environmental aesthetics to cultural landscapes may lead to principles helpful to their preservation and interpretation. In this study, an environmental aesthetic framework is developed and applied to the Canoa Ranch, a historic property south of Tucson, Arizona, to evaluate the potential of using environmental aesthetics in appreciation of cultural landscapes.

This thesis discusses the difference between two dimensional painting and sculpture although they have proceeded along parallel paths. Feminist. Post-colonial and psychoanalytical discourses intertwine to cover complexities within the artwork of Gauguin and my own. Just as painting and sculpture run along parallel paths though covering problems inherent in their differences so to do I attempt to describe similarities at the same time as recognising the areas where the two do not meet. Issues covered include the search for meaning, in such a way as to make the art works relevant at the close of the twentieth century. A major consideration for a sculptor, that will be discussed, is that reading visual, two dimensional images is something everyone is practised at, in contrast to reception of three dimensional works. Audiences are less familiar with semiotic readings of sculpture. It is my contention that Gauguin's art and life can be compared to the way an audience views sculpture. His relations with women in particular, had this overwhelming double standard. He, at the same time as he adored and idealised the female totally rejected their involvement in his life in any meaningful way.

Humor recognition and appreciation are important aspects to enhance psychological well-being and enrich social relationships and interactions. The present study hypothesized that first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients with adult onset in the Chinese society have deficits in humor recognition and appreciation compared with healthy controls. It also predicted FEP patients with a diminished ability in recalling humorous stimuli. Moreover, this study sought to explore the potential associations of humor recognition and appreciation deficits with measures of clinical symptoms, psychosocial and neurocognitive functioning, and self-perception towards hope and recovery among FEP patients. Thirty FEP patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, schizoaffective disorder, brief psychotic disorder or delusional disorder were compared with 30 healthy controls matched for gender, age and education years on a humor task comprising six comedy video clips. Humor recognition was measured by the detection of total ‘standard humorous moments’ in the comedy clips. Humor appreciation was measured by self-report Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) funniness ratings. Percentage of recalled ‘standard humorous moments’ was also measured. Changes in positive and negative mood states were measured using Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Patients were assessed for clinical symptoms, psychosocial functioning, self-perception towards recovery and hope, and a battery of neuropsychological tests measuring executive function, working memory, intelligence quotient, semantic and visuospatial memory, and selective attention. FEP patients had a lower number in detection of total ‘standard humorous moments’, in total VAS funniness rating, and in percentage of recalled ‘standard humorous moments’ compared with healthy controls. Patients and healthy controls did not differ in positive and negative mood changes induced by the comedy clips. In patients, humor recognition had significant negative correlation with negative symptoms and significant positive correlation with self-perception towards hope. Recall of ‘standard humorous moments’ had significant negative correlation with negative symptoms and significant positive correlation with immediate and delayed recall using working memory. Both humor recognition and appreciation had no correlation with psychosocial and neurocognitive functioning. FEP patients had impaired humor recognition, appreciation and recall compared with healthy controls. The degree of humor recognition and recall deficits may be, respectively, associated with the extent of negative symptoms and attributed to impairments in the neurocognitive domain of working memory. Potentials of humorous stimuli in inducing a positive impact on mood for the patient population were found, providing insight for the introduction of humor therapy as a new form of intervention that could further improve psychological well-being.

This thesis is an inquiry into the aims of the postwar film society movement. Film societies provided an organised alternative to commercially run film exhibition: screens and audiences for films overlooked by cinemas and opportunities to study and discuss them within voluntary associations. The thesis assesses the movement's contribution to both these objectives, focusing in particular on its promotion of film appreciation, a set of educational ideas and practices associated with training film viewers' capacity for film critical judgement. Tracing shifts in film appreciation as a discourse and as film society practice centred on screenings and discussion, the thesis contributes to our understanding of what film studies has been in Britain. It argues that appreciation connotes a cultural ambition specific to the postwar moment, broad social participation in discussion of cinematic value. The thesis brings together research into the activities of individual societies, specifically through detailed studies of the Edinburgh Film Guild and Birmingham Film Society, with a focus on the practices and publications promoted by the Federation of Film Societies that aimed to construct a cohesive movement from disparate societies. The values nurtured by self-organised film education bodies are explored through the ideal of active participation, embodied in the membership relationship, across a spectrum of film cultural activity: exhibition, education and criticism. The self-image of the film society movement was also that of a vanguard in taste and knowledge. The thesis traces the pressures on this self-conception during a period of radical shifts in judgement associated with emergent critical and educational vanguards fostered in particular by the professionalisation of film teaching. The thesis argues that although this professionalisation created new forms of film society pedagogy it also introduced an ever-widening divide between informal learning, premised on membership exhibition and discussion, and specialised film studies in formal education.

From introduction: "To affirm that a work of art is good or bad is to commend or condemn, but not describe . Thus criticism does not, and cannot, have the impersonal character and strict rules applicable independently of time and place," .. . (Macdonald 1966: 111) "Criticism and appraisal, too, are more like creation than like demonstration and proof." (Macdonald 1966: 112) This essay articulates evaluatory criteria that are used by both critics and laymen and which are cross -culturally applicable. Thus it seeks to articulate relatively objective types of criteria which we all use when evaluating paintings. This essay articulates fixed and objective criteria, but within these categories recognizes that there is much room for skillful, sympathetic and knowledgeable criticism. Thus criticism is a creative act. These objectively- articulated criteria are best seen as aids to, rather than carbon copies, for evaluation.

The performance of Xhosa mbongis (no correct English equivalent is available for the Xhosa bard / praise singer) is an interesting art form presentation by some individuals found in the Xhosa community. What is of interest is the fact that such artists are known to be the voices of their communities, heralding socio-cultural and historical norms and achievements. In the olden days, such figures were commonly found in the royal circles of headmen, chiefs and kings. Nowadays, urbanization has brought them into the township where they are gradually assuming different roles of not only focusing on the royal houses, but also in all community leaders as well as non-leaders of the community. Initially they used to earn their reputation through the kings or councils stages / platforms, but these days they also acquire such reputation through media and in any socio-political gatherings. They used to win awards and presents while nowadays they charge appearance fees. It is being changed into a profession albeit without any sort of academic accreditation. In the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan township, a number of such mbongis have mushroomed much against the likings of some purists cultural practitioners. The purists accuse them of being drunk with greed. Perhaps the accusation is justified and perhaps not. What is most notable is the fact that mbongis recite whenever they are asked to do so, something which is not acceptable to purists who believe that an imbongi is called forth to perform when the spirits instruct him or her to stand up and bonga. Whatever the case may be, many of such mbongis appear mostly in funerals, of known and unknown figures and so to many people, they make mockery of such a solemn talent. It is against this background that the researcher felt the need to look into this literary art-form as being presently performed by a township imbongi. The first chapter will deal with introduction, aim of study and method of research. The second chapter will provide a review of oral poetry and a poet in Xhosa writings, the nature of traditional imbongi his or her role in traditional and modern society. The third chapter will give the analysis of content, form and style of two recited poems by two different imbongis. The fourth chapter will provide a brief conclusion on how we view modern traditional imbongis and oral poetry

Motion is a fundamental activity for the healthy functioning human organism. Its importance, however, is increasingly de-valued in Western cultures as they speed toward adopting technologies and virtual experiences as adjuncts to, and even replacements for7 traditional educational structures and processes that involve physical activity. Organised and reflective experience of human motion is becoming increasingly marginalised in teaching methodologies and learning programs in educational institutions at all levels around the globe. This inquiry sets out to gain a greater understanding of why people and human motion become disconnected, particularly during periods of formal education. A central question and two sub-questions form the basis of the inquiry. The central question asks why human motion is not valued and more utilised in education. In particular, why do learning areas that directly represent involvement with human motion, such as physical education, continually struggle in education programs. It directs the investigation to focus on the causes rather than the symptoms of the disuse and devaluation of human motion in Australian education. The two sub-questions split the praxis of the study. The first seeks to understand how the causes of devaluation work in the educational context lo affect the lack of acknowledgement; and the second considers ways to counter the disuse of human movement in education programs. To address these questions, the research focuses on rebutting the notion of a mind-body dualism. Rather, it seeks to better understand how humans learn and function as monists - integrated beings, acquiring self-knowledge in their 'world of being' in which bodily and emotional experiences, and reasoning are inextricably intertwined. I have approached this qualitative research as an ethnographic sociologist examining the issues from a critical high modernist perspective in order to demonstrate the pervading influence in Australian education of strong beliefs and values from the era of Enlightenment. Narrative analysis of 'memoir' in the form of self-defining memories was selected to gain a sensibility of the connectedness between human emotion, motion and reasoning in the lived experiences of students in three primary and three secondary schools across Years 2-12. An opportunity for human movement to be more valued and utilised in emerging educational frameworks that have life knowledge, dispositions and capabilities at their core is identified. The inquiry proposes a conceptualisation of human motion in education for new times characterised by the need for people to develop personal resources and strong positive identities in order to cope with a world of rapid change and uncertainty.

Annotation:
A dynamic inflow model is a powerful tool for predicting the induced velocity distribution over a rotor disc. On account of its closed form and simplicity, the model is highly practical especially for studying flight mechanics and designing control systems for helicopters. However, scant attention has been so far paid to applying this model to analyse autorotative rotors (i.e. rotors in the windmill-brake state), which differ from powered helicopter rotors (i.e. rotors in the normal working state) in that the geometric relation between the inflow and the rotor disc. The principal aim of this research is to theoretically investigate the applicability of existing dynamic inflow models for autorotative rotors, and if necessary, to provide a new dynamic inflow model for autorotative rotors. The contemporary dynamic inflow modelling is reviewed in detail from first principles in this thesis, and this identifies a modification to the mass-flow parameter for autorotative rotors. A qualitative assessment of this change indicates that it is likely to have a negligible impact on the trim state of rotorcraft in autorotation, but a significant effect on the dynamic inflow models in certain flight conditions. In addition, this thesis includes a discussion about the small wake skew angle assumption, which is invariably used in the derivation of Peters and He model. The mathematical validity of the assumption is cast doubt, despite the resultant model has experimentally been fully validated. The author discusses on a theoretical ground the possible reason why the Peters and He model works well in spite of its inconsistent derivation

One of the reasons typically given for the recent currency appreciation in Brazil is the expansion of the public spending. Apparently, this statement is theoretically supported, after all, the models generally suggest that an increase of government consumption implies real foreign exchange appreciation. However, much of the empirical evidence suggests the opposite. Moreover, government consumption, both for its level or its variation, doesn’t seem to be the most relevant account in public spending in Brazil. For that reason, it is also worth looking for investment and transfers, hitherto largely ignored in theoretical and empirical literature. The objective of this study is therefore to investigate empirically, through various methodologies, the effect of the federal’s government consumption, investment and transfers on the real effective exchange rate in Brazil. In general, we found no significant effect.

Audiobooks, although largely unexamined, should be perceived as the aural artefacts of a distinct artistic genre. It, in turn, should be identified as part of an interdisciplinary aesthetic category—one which has not been defined hitherto. To classify audiobooks as artworks, I turn to the New Institutional Theory of Art (NITA), which currently provides the most effective explanation available to determining not only what makes something into an artwork, but also whether or not a particular artwork can be deemed beautiful (i.e. aesthetically good). In utilizing NITA, instituting a context—a framework governing the artistic praxis of recording written texts and delivering them to a designated audience—I consequently create a unique aesthetic category. As an artistic institution in its own right, it determines the criteria for identifying aural performances as works of art, and, in effect, establishes audiobooks among all forms of aural performance. In rendering aesthetic evaluation and appreciation crucial aspects to defining art, the implied notion of internal logic—while not explicitly expressed—prevails as a core concept, inherent to a comprehensive understanding of NITA. In articulating its meaning, I suggest its association with the idea of informed intuition, thereby introducing them both as pivotal in illuminating the contribution of my expanded application of NITA. Effectively, in recognizing that to define art necessitates more than mere classification, one is able to employ an institutional analysis on different kinds of artistic case studies. By surveying three major case studies—all manifesting the first-person narrative as a fundamental aesthetic property of audiobooks—the concrete analysis of audiobooks as artworks proves essential to my methodology. Ultimately, by ascertaining their aesthetic quality, I propose to identify the manner in which the craft of casting aural performances necessarily, albeit unconsciously, consolidates aesthetic evaluation, and, effectively, illustrates how it pragmatically works in action.

During the last decades, the awareness of the bond between food and its territory of origin has grown, and food perceived to be local and traditional increased in its attractiveness. Aware of this scenario, the purpose of this dissertation is to explore in depth the phenomenon of place-based food: firstly, it aims for a better understanding of the concept of place-based food; secondly, the purpose is to study the territorial orientation of food companies, trying to understand how local and global food companies could interpret and employ in their strategy the link with territory. This dissertation is composed of three essays, each with specific purposes. In Essay 1, we intend to improve the comprehension of place-based food concept, answering to the following central questions: What are the main characteristics of place-based foods? What reasons drive people to increase their attention to territoriality? What meanings do consumers attach to territorial food consumption? To pursue this threefold objective, we review the extant multidisciplinary literature related to food and place. After this in-depth analysis of place-based food concept, in Essay 2 and 3 we investigate the territorial facet of food companies, thus exploring the relationship between food and place in an organizational point of view. Specifically, in Essay 2 we focus on local companies in order to verify the possibility to shift from the concept of terroir products to the concept of terroir organization. In particular, the research questions are as follows: How a local food company which serves typical and traditional products manages its linkage with the territory? What are the implications of the fact that the company itself shows a strong link with the territory of origin of the food products offered? To what extent does the connection among firm, food and territory influence the firm’s strategy? In contrast to Essay 2, in Essay 3 the purpose is to investigate how global companies have progressively changed their offer, paying increasing attention to the territorial dimension. What are the main factors that determine the new face of transnational companies? To what extent does the link between food and place influence their chosen strategies? To explore these issues, both in Essay 2 and 3 we examine a case study based on qualitative inductive techniques. Specifically, in Essay 2 we analyze the case of MeC Puddu’s, a Sardinian restaurant deeply embedded in its territory of origin, which offers Sardinian traditional dishes in an unusual fast-food way. In opposition, in Essay 3 we consider the case of McDonald’s that, over the past four years, has undertaken on the Italian market a process of developing Italian products by launching a new line of products based on Italian recipes and produced with certified Italian ingredients. These two cases illustrate two different ways to use territorial links in the firm strategy. Furthermore, they underline two reverse implications of the territorial orientation related to the mix between local and global elements. In this reference, MeC Puddu’s desire to become a global promoter of traditional products of its land can be considered as the opposite of the McDonald’s attempt to approach the Italian market via the McItaly line. Just as McDonald’s tries to replicate its corporate philosophy and symbols, while simultaneously catering for Italian preferences for food produced locally and nationally, MeC Puddu’s aims to reverse this process. The Sardinian fast-food aims to transmit and communicate the cultural and traditional aspect of its products and its place of provenance overcoming the regional boundaries. The implications of this dissertation are both theoretical and practical. On a theoretical level, it contributes to a better understanding of the concept of place-based food, showing at the same time the need for further research to better understand the place-based food consumer. Additionally, the current work enlarges the study of the relationship between food and territory, by considering it in an organizational point of view, and contributes to the development of the glocalization literature, by underlining a new element to be considered in the balance between global and local forces. On a practical level, the dissertation offers valid support to marketing strategies to be implemented in the food sector, also emphasizing the potentiality of the adoption of a territorial orientation in firms’ strategies.

In spite of many indications to the contrary, not least the tenor of the times which includes both the remnant left after the "death of God" as well as the rise of New Age religiosity, this thesis proposes, using feminist and feminine archetypal thinking, that the theory of culture that Christianity, and specifically Catholicism, formulates, is more relevant than ever for the culture it had a part in creating. Within the frame of Christian value reality, a "religion of relatedness" is centred on the Great Commandment which orders loving relatedness to God, then to oneself, and finally to others. What this has to mean in practice is that our relatedness to others depends on our relatedness with ourselves which depends on our relatedness to a beneficent God. Our relatedness to ourselves and to God can be appreciated and evaluated through the lens of Jungian thought - in particular Jung's theory of individuation. Our relatedness to others and the success of that as expressed in the health of our cultural milieu can be appreciated and evaluated through the lens of Lacanian discourse theory. Both individual and cultural growth are part of a developmental and maturation process leading to the "paradox, depth and intergenerational responsibility" that Fowler (1981) describes as characteristic of a Stage 5 level of faith in his Stages of Faith model. That complexity in Stage 5 understanding is seen as essential for growing out of the social and environmental problems that beset human life at this point in its history.

This thesis argues that the emotion felt in response to the aesthetic appreciation of nature is relative to the relationship the observer has with the natural object or scene. The relative character of the emotional aesthetic response to nature indicates that the response is in one important sense subjective and yet the thesis also argues that some emotional responses to nature may be inappropriate and suggests guidelines for preventing such inappropriate responses. If emotion is linked to reason then the emotions felt in the aesthetic response to nature must be also involve reason. The emotions felt are relative to the associations we have with the aesthetic object and are therefore reliant on the beliefs and experiences one has of the aesthetic object regardless of whether these beliefs are merited. A central part of this thesis examines relativism within aesthetics and how versions of objects are created and used to respond to the world. Given that the emotions felt in the aesthetic response to nature are relative to the observer, the next question is as to how appropriate these emotional responses are. It is argued that although relative, the response may be considered inappropriate to the aesthetic object as it may be based on a narrow or weak understanding of the object. To prevent this three guidelines are proposed for containing the emotional aesthetic response to that which is appropriate; disinterestedness, perception lead aesthetics and responding well (a concept borrowed from Brady).

In this thesis we examine the prevailing dilemma concerning fast fashion and an increased attitude-behaviour gap. Many previous studies have explored the subject of fast fashion and also tried to solve the problem with the attitude-behaviour gap. We want to take this a step further by investigating what influence fast fashion may have on consumers' perception of value. By exploring this we hope to gain further knowledge concerning the attitude-behavior gap.Our focus is on young female consumers, since previous studies show the likelihood of the gap between intent and action being the largest in this consumer group. To a certain extent it can be explained by their frequent purchase of fast fashion, but also the fact that younger consumers are more influenced by fashion press and celebrity culture. This study is foremost based on qualitative research and is completed with the use of two focus groups, as well as a more quantitative research in the form of a content analysis of the Swedish fashion magazine, Sofis Mode. The study has a deductive approach. The theoretical perspectives consist of theories concerning value; value in relation to price and the concept of value. We also present a redefined model of perceived value. The results show evidence of increased focus and exposure of low priced fashion and that the low perceived monetary price has a significant impact of consumers‟ perceived value of clothing. The focus on selling low price instead of value inclines that clothes have lost its intrinsic value, as a result making clothes easily replaceable. Our study further shows a smaller attitude-behaviour gap among consumers with a high knowledge of textiles and textile production.

This thesis attempts to answer, "how can investment in the equity appreciation of owner occupied real estate occur on a market-wide basis?" Using financial engineering, the author introduces a new security design to overcome the hurdles and restrictions that prevent widespread capital market investment in owner-occupied residences. Named Housing Mutual Equity Shares (HOMES), this new investment vehicle resolves housing affordability issues for potential homeowners and provides attractive risk-adjusted rates of return for investors. The reader is first given an in-depth analysis of the demand for housing space and residential finance. Second the HOMES vehicle is introduced, hypothetical returns for 1975 through 1995 are calculated, and then analyzed and adjusted for risk. Third, the author explores the economic value of the HOMES vehicle, addressing concerns of homeowners, investors, lenders, and agents. Fourth, a comparative case study juxtaposes HOMES and a similar, but failed, product from the late seventies, Shared Appreciation Mortgages (SAMs). Finally, the author identifies a few questions for further research.

In recent years, researchers have become interested in the concept of a positive body image. Interpersonal relationships influence the acceptance and appreciation of the body. However, prior studies on positive body image has almost exclusively focused on studying general instead of specific relationships. The present study sought to investigate whether the association between secure attachment to friends and body appreciation is moderated by the personality trait Extraversion in young adults. The participants were 194 men and women aged 18 to 25 years (M = 22, SD = 1.78) who completed a questionnaire measuring body appreciation, secure attachment to friends and Extraversion. The results of a hierarchal regression showed that secure attachment to friends did not predict body appreciation and that Extraversion did not have a moderating effect. Extraversion was, however, positively associated with body appreciation, above and beyond the effect of sex, BMI and parental socioeconomic status. These findings contribute to a richer understanding of the potential advantages of including Extraversion when studying body image in young adults.

Gratitude and indebtedness are construed as separate constructs in recent research. It is hypothesized by this thesis that self-focused attention affects feelings of gratitude and indebtedness. Focusing less attention on the self, thus turning attention resources outward, may allow for the experience of gratitude, whereas focusing inward may create feelings of indebtedness. Two studies examined how focusing one's attention inward may be related to indebtedness, whereas being focused outward may be related to gratitude. A correlational study showed that people who self-focus tend to feel more indebtedness and less gratitude. An experiment was designed to show that manipulating social anxiety, a specific type of self-focused attention, would increase feelings of indebtedness and decrease feelings of gratitude. However, no significant differences of indebtedness or gratitude were found between the experimental condition and control condition.
