Agung Artomoro is a service company operating since February 2012. The company was established because of the high number of migrants in Indonesia associated with the high demand for labor in the plantation industry. The company focuses on offering full package service in providing labor for plantation, providing goods for plantation labor, and providing transportation service. Since it was founded, the company continues to get a positive earning year to year, but the increase in revenue followed by an increase in the cost, and it causes profit stagnation. This research investigates what causes of the stagnation in company profit. The research question design method was used in this paper, which involves using a qualitative research interview in collecting data from 11 respondents, including internal and external parties. The external analysis results show that the pulp and paper industry is still growing, which supported by government regulation. The internal analysis results show that the company has resources and capabilities that have not been fully maximized. The conclusion of the internal and external analysis resulted in details of SWOT analysis tools and formulated into the Fishbone analysis to discover the root cause of the company's problem. This research aims to create a new business model by proposing a few strategies to increase business performance evaluation for internal development. The researcher selected two strategies obtained from Porter’s Generic Strategy, which used a vertical integration strategy, both integrating backward and integrating forward. The results of the proposed strategies are mapped into Business Model Canvas and highlight how cost leadership strategy can maximize the use of resources and capabilities to make business performance more effective and efficient and create sustainability in competitive advantages.

Purpose This paper aims to explore how companies could adapt to challenges derived from globalization, competitiveness and knowledge-based economy through resiliency as organizational property. It delves to into the factors enhancing the termed nurtured, especially those related to human resources and innovation. Design/methodology/approach The research approach is framed within the long run analysis of the internal perspective of resources and business performance (resources-based model) and the theory of complex adaptive systems. According to these approaches, methods and variables for empirically assess company resilience are proposed. Findings Main findings indicate a considerable contribution of human resources and innovation to company resilience. Besides, adaptive company resilience requires product diversification and productivity. By strengthening and developing nurtured resilience, a company is equipped to quickly recovering after being adversely affected by a shock, withstand shocks and avoid shocks. Practical implications Resilience focus management could be an additional tool for managing the unexpected and also complementary to early warning systems. Originality/value This paper regards resilience as an integrated and overall framework for developing company internal capabilities balancing efficiency and adaptability (and does not consider it, merely, as an add-on).

Circular economy (CE) entails a radical change in companies because new ways of thinking and doing business are required for value-creation opportunities. There is a lack of empirical studies on how companies themselves see and develop the CE business. Furthermore, the dynamics between the changes required when pursuing a circular business model (CBM) have not been sufficiently studied. This intensive case study examines the strategic business decisions of a forerunner company in CE over 20 years. Questions: What were the strategic decisions related to CE business model in the case company over 20 years? What internal and external factors impacted the strategic decisions and how? Theory: The theoretical framework of this study is built based on CBM strategies and capabilities in the CE business. Basis of the Case: Phenomenon. Type of the Case: An intensive case study of a forerunner company in CE. Protagonist: Not needed. Findings: First, the results of the analysis show that the company engaged in both slowing and closing resource loop business model strategies in the CE market. Second, the results of the analysis imply that the path dependency in the market was too strong, and the company was not able to break the path dependency of the closing loop strategy. Third, the results show that the case company was, however, able to challenge the path dependency and lock-in in the closing resource loop strategy with internal factors that included strategic management capabilities, such as making decisions within the current market conditions, organizational capabilities, such as developing new positions and knowledge, technological capabilities, such as investments on improving and upgrading recycling and waste management, and business model innovation capabilities. Discussions: This study contributes to a call for further research on how companies themselves see and develop CE business. This study sheds light on the ways by which path dependency and lock-in contribute to CBM innovation and can explain a CE strategy failure. Furthermore, this study provides evidence that by drawing on company-internal and company-external factors, a company can challenge path dependency and lock-in and go forward in developing the CE business despite difficulties. For the case company, it was easier to maintain the closing resource loop strategy and stay with the original core business idea of providing recycling and waste management services to construction businesses and selling waste material for energy and heat production than engaging in slowing resource loop strategy. Finally, the results of this study suggest that path dependency theory is useful in projecting future risks in CBM innovation.

Munculnya beberapa Bank pesaing dalam melayani pembayaran manfaat pensiun maupun penyaluran kredit pensiun menjadikan permasalahan pada Bank XYZ untuk mempertahankan leading position dalam kredit pensiun. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi faktor internal perusahaan dalam mencapai keunggulan bersaing dan melakukan evaluasi keunggulan bersaing pada Bank XYZ Purna Bakti. Peneliti menggunakan analisis internal perusahaan dari aspek sumber daya, kompetensi inti, kapabilitas, dan seluruh aktivitas rantai nilai perusahaan untuk melakukan evaluasi keunggulan bersaing. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa perusahaan memiliki sumber daya dengan reputasi tinggi, memiliki kompetensi inti dalam memberikan pelayanan sebagai misi bisnis dan sosial, memiliki kapabilitas tim manajemen yang handal, serta kesatuan seluruh aktivitas rantai nilai perusahaan yang saling mendukung. Perusahaan juga telah melakukan strategi diferensiasi dalam mencapai keunggulan bersaing dari segi pelayanan yang berbeda dibandingkan pesaingnya sehingga memberikan nilai tambah yang bersifat jangka panjang dan sulit untuk ditiru. Purna Bakti unit in particular is highly valued as a mass market bank segment in Indonesia which integrating business and social mission. The challenge going forward is to sustain the Bank’s market leadership position, especially with increasing competition from other banks with same specialization. The research is purposed to analyze internal factor in a company to gain competitive advantage and evaluate this competitive advantage. The method of internal analysis will be used to identify company’s strong point namely core competence, resources, capabilities, and whole value chain activities. The result shows that XYZ Bank has reputable resources, excellent core competence in their services, capable team management, and supportive value chain activities to command in a whole company. The Bank has been successfully implementing differentiation strategy to gain competitive advantage from different service perspective which giving it long-term strong point and making it distinct from another company. With the internationalization of firms from emerging-markets, the upgradation along the global value chain of emerging-market multinational enterprises (EMNEs) has attracted the attention of academics and industries. However, the role of upgradation of EMNEs in a host country to the transition of EMNEs in the home country is ignored. This study explored how EMNEs from emerging-markets could upgrade their operations in their home countries driven by the transformation of subsidiaries in host countries. An in-depth analysis of Company S was conducted to elaborate on the resources and trigger time a firm needs to transform the function of a subsidiary in the host country, and the upgradation of the firm in the home country during the internationalization process. Research on the internationalization of Company S suggested that with the complementary capabilities and markets as the fundamental basic resources, the industrial crisis triggers the firm’s upgrading in the host country. In addition, the intrafirm (internal) market mechanism makes it possible to sustain the upgrading process without conflicts between subsidiaries. Moreover, synergies will develop through interactions with subsidiaries, owing to complementary capabilities and the internal market. The synergetic development promotes the transition of firms in the home country and emphasizes the complementarity of the manufacturing and engineering service. Finally, this study demonstrates the two-stage international upgrading process, in which the international upgrading of firms in the home country is driven by the development and transition of the subsidiary in the host country, which provides contributions to the internationalization upgrading strategy and process of firms from emerging-markets.

The aim of this paper is to analyse marketing capabilities, through the dynamic capabilities framework, in order to increase understanding of how gradual global SMEs operating in traditional sectors can improve their export performance.The work is based on the exploratory, descriptive, qualitative method of a case study. An Italian SME has been selected on the basis of its export performance and marketing activities. The study has been conducted through secondary data analysis and a semi-structured in-depth interview with the CEO, with the aim of highlighting the relevance of emerging dynamic marketing capabilities connected with international performance.The results show that a SME, which lacks resources for international expansion, can improve its export performance by adapting, integrating, building, and reconfiguring its existing internal and external marketing capabilities for international markets.The principal limitation of this work is that, by analysing a company belonging to the alcoholic beverage sector, where price decisions are often left to importers, it was not possible to analyse dynamic pricing capabilities. This paper offers a contribution to the discussion of the internationalization of gradual global SMEs from the perspective of marketing and dynamic capabilities, missing from the literature, which is mainly focused on the study of multinational and born global enterprises.

PurposeBusiness wargames represent an alternative approach to challenge organisations to uncover internal capabilities through competitive actions designed to counteract external threats and address strategic mismatches. Internal capabilities uncovered as a result of actions taken during a competitive wargame aims to replicate market conditions found in competitive industries. These outcomes are difficult to achieve using many popular strategy design methods. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of war game-style activities in formulating corporate strategy that incorporate the natural behaviors of the leadership team in creating strategic plans.Design/methodology/approachUsing a case study from the banc assurance industry, the authors review a wargame process composed of two competing teams; the banc assurance organisation and an unincorporated joint venture between a banking institution and an insurance company. The goal of each entity was to develop strategy to improve both customer satisfaction and market share at the expense of each other given a finite set of resources. Success was judged using a simple set of metrics defined by both a consumer team and an independent umpire.FindingsConsumers of financial services are price sensitive and highly brand loyal. Unwillingness to switch brands to a prevailing competitor or other emerging (Fintech) institution persists to a threshold of a price and/or value differential of 15 to 20 per cent. The results highlight potential deficiencies in the proposed banc assurance strategy through the observation of customer behaviours and inefficient resource use.Originality/valueThe wargame approach conducted in a realistic landscape revealed internal capabilities not otherwise evident. The impact of authentic human behaviours in setting business strategy was captured which is very difficult to replicate using more formal scenario analysis and planning.

The development of new commodities or products that are in line with market needs is a challenge for exporters. The company's export performance reflects the specific behavior of the company in utilizing and managing resources and capabilities effectively in the context of international competition. This study aims to identify what factors influence the increase in export performance of products in South Sulawesi. This study uses a quantitative approach. The method used is indepth interview (in-depth interview), observation and questionnaire. Researchers are required to risk their ability to study more deeply about strategies for improving export performance. Research location in South Sulawesi. The data collected includes primary data and secondary data. The analysis technique in this study is qualitative descriptive, IFAS (Internal Factors Analysis Summary) and EFAS (External Factors Analysis Summary) analysis and SWOT (Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats) analysis to design an ideal export performance strategy. The results show that strong internal and external environmental conditions can support the development and improvement of export performance for companies. This finding can contribute to exporters to determine strategic planning in improving their performance.

This research aims to investigate the most suitable Construction Staging scenario of the Cargo Village construction project for investment decision by using business issue analysis and financial analysis. This study uses mixed methodology, a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. The qualitative method in this study aims to assess the external conditions and AP2 resources, by TOWS Analysis method. Meanwhile, quantitative research methods are used to conducting Financial Feasibility in form of Capital Budgeting Payback Period (PP), Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) for several scenarios of development staging. The result shows that AP2 continuously improves its capabilities and core competencies as the internal strength to balance the threat from outside the company and is prepared to start taking advantage of the opportunity available from the external environment to gain more knowledge to take a new step for comprehensive cargo business. the construction of Cargo Village is feasible to be done by the three scenarios of development staging. This research found that Development scenario of finishing the construction on the main cargo terminal building, which has the biggest investment cost prior to the construction of warehouse and additional services such as perishable and transhipment, gives the best result with the largest value of NPV & IRR and less payback period.

Abstract Background & orientation: The existence of silo mentality has direct effect on the business model used by any ITC company. Its contribution slows service delivery whilst increasing customer’s despondency. However mitigation could help overcome barriers within divisions, improve customer experience and increase productivity. But when different units as components of a company fail to integrate, collaborate and work together to achieve a common objective goal, not only are performances affected but also operations at all levels. A business model canvas can help determine how a company intends to create value for customers whilst it makes money. Thus deliverance of an effective value proposition for efficient customer needs, can be affected through silos. Purpose: This study explore the effects of silo mentality within an ITC company (at organisational level) using the 9 elements of the business model canvas as framework. Methodology and research questions: As an exploratory study qualitative methods were used where in-depth interview questions looked at how silo mentality within the organisation affects the core business model elements and why. Twelve participants were selected from an enterprise business unit through a convenience sampling method. Content analysis helped with the development of core themes that looked at the how silos affect each element (process) and why (meaning). Findings: Silo mentality affects not only the individuals but team, products, value proposition, relations with partners, customers, stakeholders. Thus undermines internal capabilities and key resources. Absence of teamwork within the divisions leads to conflicts which delays achievements of common goals. Bottlenecks affect inter-divisional progress and relations, customer output and relations and compromise the quality of service. Implications: Silo mentality is a bottleneck that not only weakens firms’ capabilities and growth potential but destroys any value created by the firm.

Strategic analysis included Analysis of Company Resources, Portfolio Analysis and SWOT Analysis. The external strategic analysis included Porter's Five Forces Model, PEST Analysis and Competitors Analysis. On the basis of the aforementioned analyses I recommended a suitable strategy for future development of the enterprise.

Abstract: Previous studies largely assume that a firm's internal resources and its external business network are complementary in new product development (NPD). Drawing on the dynamic capabilities perspective, this study is concerned with two strong forms of dynamic capabilities: the ability of sensing and seizing opportunities. This study investigates a case study of the initiative of ST Company. This study develops a integrative model that links internal resources (market orientation, innovation orientation, technological capital, and NPD human capital) and external business network with firm’s NPD, through the mediating effect of dynamic capabilities (the ability of sensing and seizing opportunities). Internal resources such as market orientation, innovation orientation, technological capital, and human capital, together with a firm's external business network, are vital sources of dynamic capabilities for new product development. The findings show that resource interplay between internal resources and external resources embedded in a firm's business network has a positive impact on its ability to sense and seize opportunities, a vital dynamic capability. More specifically, the findings also show that a firm's business network moderates the effect of its internal resources on dynamic capability (its ability to sense and seize opportunities). Finally, dynamic capability plays an important role in translating the resource-interplay into new product performance. The authors discuss the managerial implications of study findings and offer directions for future research.

Renewable energy sources are increasingly coming into use. This notably counts for non-food based biomass sources, including those producing wood-based energy. A firm that (re-)directs activities to this area can potentially create value. The external and internal environment of the firm sets the outline for the value creation potential. Important in the value creation process are dynamic capabilities to alter resource bases. The authors show this with an example in the mature Finnish pulp and paper industry. A Delphi study helps to identify the main industry- and company-level factors that influence the forest-based energy sector, its value-creation potential, and the future roles of forest and energy companies in it. The results of a study on a power plant in The Netherlands shows how the economic value creation for a specific firm can be assessed. The plant is designed to “vaporize” biomass input, in our case so-called “B-wood,” to a bio-oil that can be used to generate Green Power. The economic value analysis draws upon a risk-oriented production unit positioning analysis that is modeled with multiple scenarios. The results show that innovative business models can fruitfully be identified with multiple experts in sophisticated Delphi rounds and dynamic resource-based approaches appear promising. The authors also find that bio-refinery production chains are economically feasible with relatively small production units with multiple applications. The chapter gives way to a management view that integrates resource-based and economic value perspectives on wood-based energy sources for firms. In that sense, it adds to the literature on value creation with innovative business models.

Corporate environmental reporting using the Internet – especially the WWW – is a rapidly emerging and increasingly popular method. Today, online environmental reporting has become part of business practices and daily affairs for a number of companies, and thus many of the environmental communication vehicles provided for companies’ target groups and other stakeholders (users) are available on the WWW: reports, brochures, leaflets, newsletters, press releases, slides, presentations, audio sequences, video clips and so forth are accessible via download and/or online, prepared for being pulled or automatically disseminated via e-mail or other current push technologies. Despite the considerable progress companies have made in recent years, however, it is not yet clear just how environmental reporting will advance to the next stage. In particular, the role of the Internet as an emerging computer-based medium and its unique capabilities in form and content need to be understood better. This chapter describes how to develop from early environmental reporting stages towards the more advanced sustainability reporting, while exploiting the Internet’s specific capabilities properly. This path is illustrated as a progression in environmental reporting along three dimensions: integration of financial and social issues into environmental reporting, provision of reporting instruments on various media and fine tuning communication vehicles according to users’ needs and preferences. These trends in terms of a more balanced reporting approach, cross media availability and customization seem to be converging to push the field towards sustainability reporting based on the Internet as a backbone for companies’ underlying ICT infrastructure. Without support from ICT, progress in the field toward sustainability reporting is seen as quite difficult, as moving away from orthodox environmental reporting is a complex task. Hence, a framework on how to use the Internet and its associated technologies is proposed, including four conceptual components: stakeholder analysis, information requirement analysis, XML-based document engineering and ICT architecture of an Internet-based reporting system. When employing such an Internet-based approach, it is argued here, the company will be in a position to carry out its tasks of information management well, using its human and organizational resources more efficiently, and communicating on environmental and sustainability issues in a meaningful way; that is, facilitating stakeholder dialogue, interactivity, feedback possibilities and tailor-made reports that respond precisely to the requirements of certain reporting standards and guidelines, or exactly to the information needs of the target groups.

In the framework of digital economy and the fourth industrial revolution, it is very important that companies have internal capabilities for the analysis of data and of the information they produce, as well as to generate value in the decision-making process. In 2017 the EAN University implemented the Program for Strengthening Capabilities in DA (PSCDA) with 15 companies from different economic sectors in Bogotá, Colombia. The main purpose of the program was to diagnose, qualify, and accompany the participating companies, in the process of strengthening their DA capabilities. Among the most important results we highlighted that 90% of the companies from the program have applied technological tools for the analysis of their data, while an 80% were able to design and implement a plan of improvement for their processes in data analytics and its use in decision making.

Given the potential headaches of managing IT, it is tempting to hand the job over to someone else. Indeed, outsourcing once appeared to be a simple solution to management frustrations, and senior management teams at many companies negotiated contracts with large service providers to run their entire IT functions (Gottschalk & Solli-Sæther, 2006). At a minimum, these providers were often able to provide IT capabilities for a lower cost and with fewer hassles than the companies had been able to themselves. But many of these outsourcing arrangements resulted in dissatisfaction, particularly as a company’s business needs changed. Service providers, with their standard offerings and detailed contracts, provided IT capabilities that were not flexible enough to meet changing requirements, and they often seemed slow to respond to problems. Furthermore, a relationship with a supplier often required substantial investments of money and time, which entrenched that supplier in the company’s strategic planning and business processes. The company then became particularly vulnerable if the supplier failed to meet its contractual obligations (Ross & Weill, 2002). In our dynamic perspective of knowledge resources, outsourcing relationships are not just about transactions between a vendor and a supplier. The resource-based theory argues that the firm’s ability to mobilize and utilize both internal and externally available resources determines its ability to succeed in the market place. If the firm is short of important resources such as IT resources, an outsourcing arrangement might help overcome the problem as the vendor makes IT resources available to the firm for a price.

During the decade of the 1990s, many firms engaged in widespread internal dissemination of information technology (IT) in an effort to leverage the capabilities of IT into greater organizational efficiencies. Information technologies such as electronic mail, office automation applications, and enterprise resource planning systems, are a few of the most popular examples of organizational IT initiatives from the past decade. Today, the use of information technology is an integral part of the ordinary course of business and provides technologically progressive firms with heretofore-unseen opportunities. For example, Dell Computers developed and maintains a competitive advantage in the retail technology sector based partly upon the use if information technology that did not exist 10 years ago. Although business applications of information technology present firms with vast opportunity, there is a myriad of complexities associated with organizational IT usage. Generally, this paper examines one critical area: the human resource aspect of organizational IT usage. Specifically, the research presented herein answers the question “Do human resource and information technology professionals perceive information technology certification differently?” The question is of practical relevance when examined, as in this study, within the context of the candidate selection process for a firm evaluating potential hires for an information technology-related position. Initially, the current paper presents a comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundations of certification. From theory, we construct a testing methodology that utilizes, as subjects, practicing human resource and information technology professionals. An analysis of the collected data revealed a marked difference in the perception of information technology certification among the subject groups. Based on the results of structured interviews with the study participants, we present concluding explanations regarding the statistically significant differences among groups.

The situation in the Exploration sector is challenging, as there are almost no "easy" resources left to explore. One of the ways to build a further development strategy for the Oil & Gas Exploration Companies is to define and build development plans for their core internal capabilities. To boost their efficiency, companies shall concentrate their attention and efforts around their core competencies. Purpose The principal aim of this paper is to suggest the method of identifying the internal sources of competitive advantage (the core competencies of an organization) and building the plans of their development on the example of the selected Oil & Gas Exploration Company. Methodology A case study was carried out utilizing the methods synthesized by the author basing on the critical analysis of the previous conceptual and research studies, including strategic architecture, value chain analysis, POCCI model and both quantitative and qualitative methods. The identification of core competencies was based on a discussion nature of focus group activities organized in the form of strategic sessions among the top management level of the selected Company. Findings Five core competencies were identified for any Oil & Gas Exploration Company: managing personnel motivation and development, managing uncertainties, regional / basin analysis, building an integrated business-case, and geological modelling. These results were validated and proved by a crosscheck analysis, final discussions with the focus group and a round table discussion among industry experts, consultants and top managers of major oil companies. Discussions and recommendations for further development The validity of methods suggested by the author is proved, however, some points of further methodology were identified during the research. The clear understanding of internal capabilities, the core competencies development level and what is the company is capable of today and tends to be capable of in the future will become one of the most valuable parts in every strategic decision-support package. The clear picture of identified and estimated competences together with an on-going benchmarking becomes a valuable guide in systematization and managing the company's development.

Abstract Software tools are becoming an important ally in making decisions on the development or implementation of an enhanced oil recovery processes from the technical, financial or risk point of view. This work, can be manually developed in some cases, but becomes more efficient and precise with the help of these tools. In Ecopetrol was developed a tool to make technical and economic evaluation of enhanced oil recovery processes such as air injection, both cyclic and continuous steam injection, and steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and hot water injection. This evaluation is performed using different types of analysis as binary screening, analogies, benchmarking, and prediction using analytical models and financial and risk analysis. All these evaluations are supported by a comprehensive review that has allowed initially find favorable conditions for different recovery methods evaluated, and get a probability of success based on this review. Subsequently, according to the method can be used different prediction methods, given an idea of the process behavior for a given period. Based on the prediction results, it is possible to feed the software to generate a financial assessment process, in line with cash flow previously developed that incorporates all the elements to be considered during the implementation of a project. This allows for greater support to the choice or not the application of a method. Finally the tool to evaluate the levels of risks that outlines the development of the project based on the existing internal methodology in the company, identifying the main and level of criticality and define actions for prevention, mitigation and risk elimination.

In an effort to improve quality, shorten engine development times, and reduce costly and time-consuming experimental work, analytic modeling is being used upstream in the product development process to evaluate engine robustness to noise factors. This paper describes a model-based method for evaluating engine NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) robustness due to manufacturing variations for a statistically significant engine population. A brief discussion of the cycle simulation model and its capabilities is included. The methodology consists of Monte Carlo simulations involving several noise factors to obtain the crank-angle resolved response of the combustion process and Fourier analysis of the resulting engine torque. Further analysis of the Fourier results leads to additional insights regarding the relative importance of and sensitivity to the individual noise factors. While the cost and resources required to experimentally evaluate a large engine population can be prohibitive, the analytical modeling proved to be a cost-effective way of analyzing the engine robustness taking into account manufacturing process capability.

Abstract In May 2019, the merger between Wintershall GmbH and DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG was closed, which was the start of Wintershall Dea.This paper provides detailed insight into managing reserves and resource information during this merger. After merger, three resource management activities required attention: (i) combining existing resources reporting, (ii) defining a lean but effective resources management and control system, and (iii) ensuring readiness for Initial Public Offering (IPO) by establishing an external independent evaluation of resources ("external resource audit"). This paper describes objectives, challenges and solutions on reserves and resources reporting of the new company. The merged reserves and resources database of the previous year's reports had to consider audits from two different reporting systems in parallel to four different external auditors.With priorities defined by status of external auditing, operatorship and asset share a common database was derived and could immediately be used for financial transactions such as the issuance of an inaugural bond. The new system for internal reporting of petroleum resources provides a fit-for-purpose approach, such as a consistent interpretation of commerciality criteria or definition of resources sub-classes.Particular attention was paid to synergies with respect to business planning, strategic portfolio analysis, and a link to technology & innovation. By defining specific attributes and sub-processes, the portfolio can be analyzed systematically. This provides additional insights and ensures synergies with business planning, strategic planning as well as internal technology initiatives. A systematic resource control system is defined focusing on internal review, external and internal audits as well as synergetic use of project reviews. Moreover, a feedback loop for continuous improvement of reservoir management allows attending to important audit observations. The external resource audit to ensure IPO readiness was structured to assign tasks for head office, business units and auditing company.The sequence of events from introduction to assets to reconciliation of differences between auditor and company was set-up, executed and monitored.Focus was on the definition of a structured but agile approach for external independent evaluation of all reserves and contingent resources.

Each combination of technologies necessary to produce, deliver, and distribute hydrogen for transportation use has a corresponding levelized cost, energy requirement, and greenhouse gas emission profile depending upon the technologies’ efficiencies and costs. Understanding the technical status, potential, and tradeoffs is necessary to properly allocate research and development (R&D) funding. In this paper, levelized delivered hydrogen costs, pathway energy use, and well-to-wheels (WTW) energy use and emissions are reported for multiple hydrogen production, delivery, and distribution pathways. Technologies analyzed include both central and distributed reforming of natural gas and electrolysis of water, and central hydrogen production from biomass and coal. Delivery options analyzed include trucks carrying liquid hydrogen and pipelines carrying gaseous hydrogen. Projected costs, energy use, and emissions for current technologies (technology that has been developed to at least the bench-scale, extrapolated to commercial-scale) are reported. Results compare favorably with those for gasoline, diesel, and E85 used in current internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, gasoline hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and flexible fuel vehicles. Sensitivities of pathway cost, pathway energy use, WTW energy use, and WTW emissions to important primary parameters were examined as an aid in understanding the benefits of various options. Sensitivity studies on production process energy efficiency, total production process capital investment, feed stock cost, production facility operating capacity, electricity grid mix, hydrogen vehicle market penetration, distance from the hydrogen production facility to city gate, and other parameters are reported. The Hydrogen Macro-System Model (MSM) was used for this analysis. The MSM estimates the cost, energy use, and emissions trade offs of various hydrogen production, delivery, and distribution pathways under consideration. The MSM links the H2A Production Model, the Hydrogen Delivery Scenario Analysis Model (HDSAM), and the Greenhouse Gas, Regulated Emission, and Energy for Transportation (GREET) Model. The MSM utilizes the capabilities of each component model and ensures the use of consistent parameters between the models to enable analysis of full hydrogen production, delivery, and distribution pathways. To better understand spatial aspects of hydrogen pathways, the MSM is linked to the Hydrogen Demand and Resource Analysis Tool (HyDRA). The MSM is available to the public and enables users to analyze the pathways and complete sensitivity analyses.

Abstract Paper production is an energy intensive industry but due to the wastes of its process (black liquor, waste biomass, sludge) has the capacity to generate most of its energy internally. Central to this balance are cogeneration units that guarantee the internal production of heat and electricity. These are sized for the company’s thermal load, with excess electricity injected into the grid. The efficient use of endogenous resources is a major route for improving the energy and environmental efficiency of the plant. Some of the waste materials include biomass wastes, sludges and other industrial wastes such as plastics. The present work aims to identify the opportunity of introducing a waste biomass gasification plant and the use of the produced synthesis gas, replacing the natural gas currently used in the turbine included in the company’s cogeneration unit. In this scenario, one of the cogeneration units in its current configuration has two steam boilers (one biomass; one black liquor) and a gas turbine whose waste heat feeds a recovery boiler to produce steam. The work involved several steps: the energy balance of the unit, the characterization of biomass residues (mixing bark, pine bark, eucalyptus bark, and refuse fibers), the test experimental analysis of residual biomass gasification and the characterization of the synthesis gas produced. In the electric and thermal energy producing units, gas turbines have a working efficiency above 35% while the steam turbines is considerably lower (15%). The efficiency of the chemical recovery boiler (79.5%) is lower than that of the biomass boiler (89.5%). From the experimental analysis of biomass it was found that most of them have a carbon and hydrogen content higher than 48 % and 5 %, respectively. In terms of higher calorific value (HHV), for the biomass where it was possible to determine it, the value is between 19.3 and 23.6 MJ/kg. These properties reveal that the selected biomasses from within the company, have potential as fuels. The limitation on its use may be due to the ash content, which tends to exceed 10 %. A gasification test (90 % eucalyptus biomass and 10 % mixture biomass) was also carried out to produce syngas and further characterization. The calorific value of the gas produced was 18 MJ/kg, with an absolute density of 1.17 kg/m3. It can thus be seen that for a gas turbine with a 35.8 % efficiency with a workload of 29.9 MWe 4.6 kg/s of syngas is required.

This paper will discuss the objectives, challenges, and methods of implementing a system-wide pipeline automation project at Colonial Pipeline, focusing on the pilot project and early years. Currently the company is in the midst of a five-year project to automate and remotely operate delivery facilities, tank farms, and origination stations along over 5000 miles of existing pipeline. The end result will bring control of over 200 facilities into to the Central Control Center. Technically, the project goal is to install state of the art infrastructure to enhance safety and reliability, standardize to a common platform across the system, and integrate into an existing SCADA Control System. From the business perspective, the project goal is to meet or exceed typical industry guidelines for project management metrics, reach a unitized cost basis and provide a foundation for consistent and repeatable operations across the entire pipeline system. The Common Project Process (a cross-functional integrated project team strategy) and an engineering alliance are being used to define and execute the project phases. Colonial’s Engineering team recast itself in 1999 on the basis of establishing core competencies, leveraging internal talent and knowledge, and establishing an effective outsourcing strategy. This automation project is one of the first large-scale efforts to put this new model to task. In 2000, Colonial Pipeline and Mangan, Inc. formed an engineering alliance to capitalize on the strengths of both teams. Colonial’s pipeline engineering and operations knowledge have been equitably matched with Mangan’s project management, engineering and integration skills. The result is an energetic and committed technical project team, as well as a win-win opportunity for both sides. This alliance provides a valuable model for engineering team outsourcing and contracting. Except for original construction projects, it is rare for a pipeline company to take on a system-wide infrastructure upgrade opportunity of this scope. Success of the pilot project depended on integrating the field automation with SCADA system capabilities and developing both control center and human resources plans. The field hardware, the technical focus of this paper, is a small piece of the entire project objective; however it represents the foundation of the entire business model. Selecting and committing to a common controls platform was an engineering objective. The hardware had to provide a certain level of assurance that the standard model would be available both at the start and the end of the project, in addition to supporting legacy systems for future challenges. In summary, this automation project represents more than engineering and integration. It’s a combination of the talent, hardware, and vision which will accomplish the goal of the core business product — safe and efficient delivery of consumer fuels.

Current methods for estimating the remaining strength of aging, corroded pipelines have been restricted to the capabilities of pressure based engineering models that rely on the definition of hoop stress in the pipe wall. Because in practice, pipelines are subjected to a variety of loading conditions (e.g.; axial bending from settlement and thermal stresses) that act in concert with those derived by internal pressure, a multi-year combined testing and analysis program was initiated by the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company aimed at developing computer tools for the prediction of rupture and wrinkling in corroded pipes. During the program, seventeen full-scale tests of mechanically corroded 48-inch diameter (1219-mm), X65 pipes subjected to internal pressure, axial bending, and axial compression were performed to provide data necessary for the verification of analytical models and failure prediction models. While all of the tests were designed to produce rupture, wrinkling, as defined by the occurrence of a limit moment during the application of bending loads, was produced in eleven of the tests either prior to or instead of rupture. Loading of the pipe was intended to simulate that which would be observed by a pipe in-service and included both load control and displacement control of the applied bending load, and in some tests, intended to define the amount of additional pressure required to cause burst after wrinkling was produced. Results of the tests showed that two different failure modes are produced depending on whether the bending moment is transmitted to the pipe as a fixed load or a fixed displacement, and consequently, the burst capacity of the corroded pipe may not be compromised by the presence of axial loads. This paper discusses the tests performed, including a description of the load schedule and corrosion geometries, and key results of the tests that were used in the development of a new strain-based burst prediction procedure for corroded pipes subjected to combined loads.

The article examines the world and Ukrainian history of corporate periodicals. The main purpose of this study is to reproduce an objective global picture of the emergence and formation of corporate periodicals, taking into account the business and socio-economic context. Accordingly, its tasks are to compare the conditions and features of corporate media genesis in different countries, to determine the main factors of their development, as well as to clarify the transformations of the terminological apparatus. The research is based on mostly foreign secondary scientific works published from 1915 to the present time. The literature was studied using methods such as overview, historical, functional and thematic analysis, description, and generalization. A systematic approach was used to determine the role and place of each element in the system, as well as to comprehensively consider the object in the general historical context and within the current scientific discourse. The method of systematization made it possible to establish internal and external connections, patterns and contradictions in the development of the object of study. The main historical milestones on this path are identified, examples of the first successful corporate publications and their contribution to business development, public relations, and corporate communications are considered. It was found that corporate media emerged in the mid-nineteenth century spontaneously, on the wave of practical business needs in response to industrialization, company increase, staff growth, and consumer market development. Their appearance preceded the formation of the public relations industry and changed the structure of the information space. The scientific significance of this research is that the historical look at the evolution of corporate media provides an understanding of their place, influence, capabilities, and growing communicative role in the digital age.
