The helix is a complex geometrical element. During the process of a dynamical measurement of the helical deviations, many factors, including the machine and the environment, lead to measurement errors. Although ISO as well as national standards stipulate the tolerances and assessment methods for helical deviations, these standards contribute little to the uncertainty calculations concerning such measurements. According to the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), all measurement results must have a stated uncertainty associated to them. But in most cases of helical deviation measurements, no uncertainty value is given, simply because no measurement uncertainty calculation procedure exists. For the case of helical deviation measurements on a Computer Numeric Control (CNC) polar coordinate machine, this paper analyses in detail all kinds of factors contributing to the measurement uncertainty, and gives the calculation procedure of the measurement uncertainty of helical deviation. As an example, the calculation of the measurement uncertainty of the helical deviations of a worm is presented.

Abstract In order to achieve relevant and exact value in measurement of vibrations, it is necessary to add the corresponding value of deviation to the result of measurement. As the topic of determining the deviation is too complex and the scope of article is limited, we focus on the characteristic features and mathematical description of the basic types of deviations and some partial deviations which should betaken into account in measurement.

This research intends to describe the types of deviations contained in the collection of poems Calligrammes by Guillaume Apollinaire. The approach used is a qualitative approach with content analysis method. The data collection technique used is Miles and Huberman. The theory used as the main reference is the deviation theory according to Geoffrey N. Leech which divides the deviation into eight types, namely lexical deviation, phonological deviation, grammatical deviation which includes morphological and syntactic, graphological deviation, semantic deviation, dialectal deviation, deviation of register, and deviation of historical period. The result of data analysis from 7 poems found 5 out of 8 types of deviation which are diffused in each poem, including 24 semantic deviations, 18 graphological deviations, 4 deviations of register, 3 syntactic deviations and 2 lexical deviations. While the types of phonological deviation, morphological deviation, dialectal deviation, and deviation of historical period are not found in any of the data in this collection of poems Calligrammes.

The initial state errors, caused by the Earth’s un-homogeneity through the leveling and alignment of an inertial platform before launching a long-range vehicle, will bring about remarkable flight state deviations and fall point deviations by flight dynamics. In order to analyze the propagation characteristics of the initial state errors and rapidly estimate their influence magnitude, an analytical propagation model of trajectory design is deduced by employing state space perturbation theory in nominal launch coordinate system. Then, propagation matrices of engine-cutoff state deviations and fall point deviations are obtained. In the simulations, deviations of engine-cutoff and fall point are computed in the case of a fixed launch azimuth, different launch azimuths and different launch points. Next, propagation regularities of the initial state errors are analyzed from the launch point to the engine-cutoff as well as to fall point. Conclusions are as follows: (1) the estimation accuracy of flight states deviations during boost phase will be distinctly enhanced when considering the force term deviations; (2) in the case of different launch azimuths, position and velocity deviations of engine-cutoff in the x, y directions and longitudinal deviation of fall point are symmetrical at the azimuth of 45° where these deviations are maximum. Comparatively, position and velocity deviations of engine-cutoff in the z direction and lateral deviation of fall point are symmetrical at the azimuth of −45°; (3) the proposed analytical propagation model of the initial state errors has a high estimation accuracy within the error percentage of 2%, which can improve computational efficiency by 100 times and is more suitable for multiple simulation scenarios.

Fracture correction is important orthopedics operation and can be performed by unilateral external fixator. Due to pin deviations being inevitable during the operation, searching the impacts of pin deviation on the fracture correction and fixator joint adjustment are important. This study puts forward evaluation index with sensitivity analysis for investigating the impact of three orientation deviations and three position deviations on fracture correction. Meanwhile, based on a clinical case from a 28-year-old female, the influence of pin deviation on the adjustment of fixator joints was analyzed by inverse kinematic method. Different pin deviations have different sensitivity; the sensitivity of orientation deviation is relatively larger than position deviation. The existence of pin deviation will result in the change of the adjustment value of fixator joints. In addition, the experiments of seven situations were established to verify the analytical results. This study revealed the sensitivity of different pin deviations which can also be used to predict the adjustment value of fixator joints and the accuracy of fracture correction. This research also helps to reduce operation time and decrease damage to soft tissue by reducing the frequency of inserting pins.

The objective of this paper is to present the influence of form deviations on the tolerance analysis of an assembly. For this we will study initially the tolerance analysis using the deviations and clearances domains method, a second time we will integrate the influence of form tolerances on the allowable deviation domain. To illustrate this analysis we used a classical assembly with position and form tolerances (coaxiality and cylindricity). Finally a comparative study between the two cases was illustrated. AbstractThe results of an international project involving five countries and seven laboratories performing over 400 analyses for testing the interlaboratory reproducibility and accuracy using quantitative powder diffraction are presented in this report. Four natural and four artificial mineral mixtures were examined. The RIR (reference intensity ratio) values for all mineral components were either measured or calculated. The relative standard deviation of the interlaboratory determinations range from 5 to 20 percent (for low concentrations, the relative standard deviations can attain 60% percent). Due to systematic errors, the relative standard deviations of the interlaboratory determinations generally exceed the standard deviations determined by individual laboratories. The best results were obtained when the RIR values were measured independendy in each laboratory.

Purpose The structure stiffness is greatly affected by the fixture constraints during assembly due to the flexibility of large-scale thin-walled structures. The compliant deformation of structures is usually not consistent for the non-uniform stiffness in various clamping schemes. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the correlation between the assembly quality and the clamping schemes of structures with various initial deviations and geometrical parameters, which is based on the proposed irregular quadrilateral plate element via absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF). Design/methodology/approach Two typical clamping schemes are specified for the large-scale thin-walled structures. Two typical deviation modes are defined in both free and clamping states in the corresponding clamping schemes. The new irregular quadrilateral plate element via ANCF is validated to analyze the compliant deformation of assembled structures. The quasi-static force equilibrium equations are extended considering the factors of clamping constraints and geometric deviations. Findings The initial deviations and geometrical parameters strongly affect the assembly deviations of structures in two clamping schemes. The variation tendencies of assembly deviations are demonstrated in details with the circumferential clamping position and axial clamping position in two clamping schemes, providing guidance to optimize the fixture configuration. The assembly quality of structures with deviations can be improved by configuration synthesis of the clamping schemes. Originality/value Typical over-constraint clamping schemes and deviation modes in clamping states are defined for large-scale thin-walled structures. The plate element via ANCF is extended to analyze the assembly deviations of thin-walled structures in various clamping schemes. Based on the proposed theoretical model, the effects of clamping schemes and initial deviations on the deformation and assembly deviation propagation of structures are investigated.

In the present paper we consider weighted random sums ZN = ∑j=1NajXj, where 0 ≤ aj < ∞, N denotes a non-negative integer-valued random variable, and {X, Xj , j = 1, 2,...} is a family of independent identically distributed random variables with mean EX = µ and variance DX = σ2 > 0. Throughout this paper N is independent of {X, Xj , j = 1, 2,...} and, for definiteness, it is assumed Z0 = 0. The main idea of the paper is to present results on theorems of large deviations both in the Cramér and power Linnik zones for a sum ~ZN = (ZN − EZN )(DZN )−1/2 , exponential inequalities for a tail probability P(~ZN > x) in two cases: µ = 0 and µ ≠ 0 pointing out the difference between them. Only normal approximation is considered. It should be noted that large deviations when µ ≠ 0 have been already considered in our papers [1,2].

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to find if erosion of value exists in grantor trust structured exchange traded funds. The author examines the performance of six currency exchange traded funds’ tracking errors and pricing deviations on intradaily-one-minute interval basis. All of these exchange traded funds are grantor trusts. The author also studies which metric is of more importance to investors in these exchange traded funds by examining how these performance metrics are related to the exchange traded funds’ arbitrage mechanism. Design/methodology/approach – The Australian Dollar ETF (FXA) is designed to be 100 times the US Dollar (USD) value of the Australian Dollar, the British Pound ETF (FXB) is designed to be 100 times the USD value of the British Pound, the Canadian Dollar ETF (FXC) is designed to be 100 times the USD value of the Canadian Dollar, the Euro ETF (FXE) is designed to be 100 times the USD value of the Euro, the Swiss Franc ETF (FXF) is designed to be 100 times the USD value of the Swiss Franc and the Japanese Yen ETF (FXY) is designed to be 10,000 times the USD value of the Japanese Yen. The author uses these proportions to estimate pricing deviations. The author uses a moving average model based on an Elton et al. (2002) to estimate if tracking error or pricing deviation are more relevant in ETF arbitrage and thus to investors. Findings – The author documents that the average intradaily tracking errors for the six currency ETFs are relatively small and stable. The tracking errors are highest for the FXF, 0.000311 percent and smallest for FXB, −0.000014 percent. FXB is the only ETF with a negative tracking error. All six ETFs average intradaily pricing deviations are negative with the exception of the FXA pricing deviation which is a positive $0.17; the rest of the ETFs pricing deviations are −0.3778 for FXB, −0.3231 for FXC, −0.2697 for FXC, −0.2697 for FXE, −0.6484 for FXF and −0.9273 for FXY. All exhibit skewness, kurtosis, very high levels of positive autocorrelation and negative trends, which suggests erosion of value. The author also found that these exchange traded funds’ arbitrage mechanism is more closely related to the exchange traded funds’ pricing deviation than tracking error. Research limitations/implications – The paper uses high-frequency one-minute interval data in the analysis of pricing deviation which might be artificially deflating standard errors and thus inflating the t-test significance values. Originality/value – The paper is relevant to ETF investors and contributes to the continuing search in the finance literature of better ETF performance metric.

This study was designed to measure potential deviations of targets in the upper cervical spine while using the currently available Leksell Coordinate Frame G. Methods A commercially available skull-and–cervical spine model was adapted for SRS using the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion. The Leksell Coordinate Frame G was attached to the model, and both CT and fluoroscopic imaging were performed to determine the potential for target deviation at standard Gamma Knife treatment angles of 70°, 90°, and 110°. In addition, target deviations observed at various heights of the patient positioning table were analyzed using a pair of orthogonal fluoroscopic images obtained at a standard 90° gamma angle and compared with target position as it relates to a reference bed height of 4.5 cm. Results An examination of multiple radiopaque targets embedded in or affixed to the model showed target deviations ranging from as low as 3.53 mm at the medial occiput–C1 junction to 15.56 mm at the C3–4 level during 70° extension. Target deviations at 110° flexion relative to targets on a 90° CT scan included deviations ranging from 0.58 mm at the medial occiput–C1 junction to 13.32 mm at the medial C3–4 level. Relative to targets observed at the Perfexion table height of 4.5 cm, target deviation at a table height of 3 cm varied from 0.44 to 5.26 mm. At a table height of 5.5 cm, target deviation varied from 0.44 to 3.60 mm, and at a maximum height of 5.8 cm, target deviation varied from 0.62 to 4.30 mm. Conclusions Target deviation grossly exceeded clinical tolerance and was greater the farther the distance between the cranial base and the cervical spine target. Simple and reproducible methods that allow SRS centers to immobilize the patient's cervical spine using the currently available model G head frame are necessary to increase the range of targets that can be treated safely using the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion.

This paper analyzes the convergence deviation of surrogate assisted (1+1)EA. A model of surrogate assisted (1+1)EA can be built by the finite markov chain, then we got the transition matrix of this algorithm. The deviation of surrogate model can be expressed by the perturbation of transition matrix. So we can estimate the convergence deviation with the method of matrix perturbation analysis. Analyzing of the convergence changes brought by surrogate model’s deviations can help us to have a better select of the surrogate model.

The regions of deviation method has been proposed as a technique for identifying regions of the gait cycle where joint motion deviates from normal (Shorter et al., 2008). The original statistical analysis distinguished only peak values during stance and swing. In the current article, we extend the approach by examining deviations from normal throughout the entire gait cycle using pointwise t tests. These methods were demonstrated on hind-limb joint angles of 21 Labrador Retrievers without and with cranial cruciate ligament disease. Results were compared with peak difference analysis previously performed on these subjects. All points in the gait cycle where symmetry deviations were significantly affected by cranial cruciate ligament disease (via pointwise t tests) were defined as regions of deviation from symmetry. Discriminant function analysis was used to consider single subjects and validate that these regions were truly areas of difference between groups. Regions of deviation encompassed previously determined significant peak differences, while extending analysis to additional areas of asymmetry. Discriminant function analysis suggested that the region of deviation method is a viable approach for distinguishing motion pattern differences. This enhanced method may help researchers better understand the mechanisms behind lameness and compensation.

Purpose Modeling and analysis of dimensional variation propagation is a crucial support technology for variation reduction, product/process design evaluation and recognition of variation source. However, owing to the multi-deviation (i.e. part deviations and fixture deviations) and multi-interaction (i.e. part-to-part interaction, part-to-fixture interaction and station-to-station interaction) in assembly processes, it is difficult for designers to describe or understand the variation propagation (or accumulation) mechanism clearly. The purpose of this paper is to propose a variation propagation modeling and analysis (VPMA) method based on multiple constraints aiming at a single station. Design/methodology/approach Initially, part-to-part constraints (PPCs) and part-to-fixture constraints (PFCs) are applied for the multi-interaction of assembly, and multiple constraints graph (MCG) model is proposed for expressing PPCs, PFCs, parts, as well as the variation propagation relation among them. Then, locating points (LPs) are adopted for representing the deviations in constraints, and formulas for calculating the deviations of LPs are derived. On that basis, a linearized relation between LPs’ deviations and part’s locating deviations is derived. Finally, a wing box is presented to validate the proposed method, and the results indicate the methodology’s feasibility. Findings MCG is an effective tool for dimensional VPMA, which is shown as an example of this paper. Originality/value Functions of geometric constraints in dimensional variation propagation are revealed, and MCG is proposed to formulize dimensional variation propagation.
