Paris 8, 2014. http://octaviana.fr/document/18500332X#?c=0&m=0&s=0&cv=0.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleVia its qualities, experiential art tends to intermingle the actual artwork and experience. In contemporary art, certain artists produce installations that call for a strong corporeal investment on the part of the spectator/vistitor, that call to be experienced. This thesis studies the process of reception of the installation as experiential artwork. How does the experience of this kind of work get constructed ? What are its modalities and features ? After a brief presentation of this type of art, the thesis offers a first theoretical approach that focuses on the technical assemblage so as to single out the situationbased specificities of it : spatio-temporal, practical, formal and structural. A second theoretical approach then looks at the visitor's experience so as to make sense of how the assemblage's specificities can impact his/her psycho-motor and sensori-motor habits, and thus offer new potentialities. In the last part of the thesis, a practical approach is offered, whereby the various works created during the doctoral research are presented, along with the results of a behaviourist study. This thesis hopes to offer the premise of a new aesthetics by exposing the process of appropriation of immersive/interactive installations and by demonstrating that, in certain cases, such installations can propose a singular experience, a selfexperience, a new active and aesthetic state of being

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn structural biology, the theoretical study of molecular structures has four main activities organized in the following scenario: collection of experimental and theoretical data, visualization of 3D structures, molecular simulation, analysis and interpretation of results. This pipeline allows the expert to develop new hypotheses, to verify them experimentally and to produce new data as a starting point for a new scenario. The explosion in the amount of data to handle in this loop has two problems. Firstly, the resources and time dedicated to the tasks of transfer and conversion of data between each of these four activities increases significantly. Secondly, the complexity of molecular data generated by new experimental methodologies greatly increases the difficulty to properly collect, visualize and analyze the data.Immersive environments are often proposed to address the quantity and the increasing complexity of the modeled phenomena, especially during the viewing activity. Indeed, virtual reality offers a high quality stereoscopic perception, useful for a better understanding of inherently three-dimensional molecular data. It also displays a large amount of information thanks to the large display surfaces, but also to complete the immersive feeling with other sensorimotor channels (3D audio, haptic feedbacks,...).However, two major factors hindering the use of virtual reality in the field of structural biology. On one hand, although there are literature on navigation and environmental realistic virtual scenes, navigating abstract science is still very little studied. The understanding of complex 3D phenomena is however particularly conditioned by the subject’s ability to identify themselves in a complex 3D phenomenon. The first objective of this thesis work is then to propose 3D navigation paradigms adapted to the molecular structures of increasing complexity. On the other hand, the interactive context of immersive environments encourages direct interaction with the objects of interest. But the activities of: results collection, simulation and analysis, assume a working environment based on command-line inputs or through specific scripts associated to the tools. Usually, the use of virtual reality is therefore restricted to molecular structures exploration and visualization. The second thesis objective is then to bring all these activities, previously carried out in independent and interactive application contexts, within a homogeneous and unique interactive context. In addition to minimizing the time spent in data management between different work contexts, the aim is also to present, in a joint and simultaneous way, molecular structures and analyses, and allow their manipulation through direct interaction. Our contribution meets these objectives by building on an approach guided by both the content and the task. More precisely, navigation paradigms have been designed taking into account the molecular content, especially geometric properties, and tasks of the expert, to facilitate spatial referencing in molecular complexes and make the exploration of these structures more efficient. In addition, formalizing the nature of molecular data, their analysis and their visual representations, allows to interactively propose analyzes adapted to the nature of the data and create links between the molecular components and associated analyzes. These features go through the construction of a unified and powerful semantic representation making possible the integration of these activities in a unique interactive context

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe explosion of data in recent decades has challenged existing data analysis processes tasked with uncovering patterns and extracting valuable insights in near real time. The complexity of data due to its heterogeneity, quantity, quality or the lack thereof, as well as the speed at which it is generated, places significant challenges on data analytics pipeline. This pipeline encompasses tasks such as data acquisition, storage, management, transfer, querying, visualisation, update, sharing, and the creation of insights. Given that decision-making based on big data analysis is frequently the outcome of collaborative endeavours, the data analytics and decision-making infrastructure must be collaborative. This means enabling users to communicate, interact with collaborators, and effectively coordinate their activities. The research focus of this Ph.D. thesis is to provide a framework that facilitates collaborative visual analytics using immersive technologies, assisting users with varying expertise to visualise, interact with, and analyse data. I aim to investigate how new immersive interaction and display technologies can be used to facilitate data exploration, analytics reasoning, and decision-making in visual analytics. The main contribution of this dissertation is to propose and explore novel interaction techniques in a Collaborative Immersive Analytics framework supporting visual analytics with human in the loop. My dissertation explores new techniques of selection and data integration whose aim is to speed up the data analytics pipeline, especially for interacting with dense data point cloud in Head-Mounted-Display (HMD)-based Augmented Reality (AR). My research also highlights a novel approach of automatic spatial partition of physical space in co-located AR. Moreover, in the common effort of fighting against climate change and global warming, my work focuses on data analytics for climatology and meteorology, and to a great extent on complex storm and cyclone datasets from real weather observations and predicted simulation model projections. Indeed, cyclone climate disasters occur each year globally, causing widespread devastation including human casualties, gross infrastructural damage, economic and environmental setbacks. This project will contribute to current urgent efforts to minimise storm and cyclone damage internationally, by developing techniques that allow climate researchers and key stakeholders to better access and understand available data. In more detail, I first proposed and studied a solution to improve the selection of data points. The proposed interaction technique was based on expanding data points to improve users' selection when using HMD-based AR. Second, I explored the Ontology-and-Linked-Data-based approach to integrate different data sources that allows the users to perform queries and filtering of data during the interaction and to enhance their performance in the analytics process of meteorological datasets. A user study was conducted to show the validity of this proposed approach. Finally, I present a technique that allows the users to automatically partition the shared physical workspace into several sub-spaces based on the available space and the position of the users in co-located AR using HMDs. I studied the effect of this physical space partitioning technique in the collaborative context of storm data analysis. In addition, the impact of the private and public aspects of these co-located collaborative spaces was also evaluated
Lascano, Benat. „Étude du bilinguisme basque-français chez des élèves suivant une scolarité primaire immersive en basqu“. Thesis, Pau, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PAUU1007/document.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis research is a discourse analysis of oral storytelling produced by three groups of primary schools students in the Northern Basque Country: Basque L1 bilingual pupils from a mostly Basque-speaking sociolinguistic environment, French L1 bilingual pupils from a mostly French-speaking sociolinguistic environment, and French monolingual pupils. The aim of the sudy is to see the linguistic skills that bilingual children develop during schooling, in basque and in french. Monolingual French pupils are used as referents for the acquisition of French. The bilinguals students are educated in a teaching program where Basque - the minority language of the Northern Basque-Country - is the language of instruction, and French is a subject matter. The analysis of the stories is transversal (they are 6, 9 and 11 years old children in each group of pupils), ans is focused on three discourse aspects : the narrative autonomy, the planning of the contents of the stories and the production of text organizers. Results show a similar progress in the linguistics skills for the three populations studied, both in Basque and French (for the bilinguals). Skills in French are in some cases more advanced for bilinguals than for monolinguals. We conclude that Basque-medium education not only permits the development of Basque for both Basque L1 and Basque L2 students, but it also fosters the development of French

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleToday, an increasing number of industrial companies are embracing immersive technologies (IT). These innovative technologies are primarily used in professional training to enhance operator learning. Numerous academic and industrial studies have demonstrated the benefits of using these new methods, both in terms of learning quality and the deployment of new learning situations that were previously inaccessible. However, there still exists a notable lack of user-centric consideration in designing these new training tools, which limits their full potential. However, there is still a lack of consideration for users in the design of these new training materials, which limits their potential benefits. Stäubli, a global supplier of industrial and mechatronic solutions (electrical fittings, fluid fittings, robots, and textiles), has decided to address this issue in the context of a CIFRE thesis in partnership with the ERCOS unit of the ELLIADD laboratory (UR 4661).Incorporating user perspectives into the design of products, especially immersive training systems, is challenging due to its multidisciplinary and highly collaborative nature. Therefore, the objective of our research is to propose a methodological framework for collaborative user-centered design of immersive professional training (IPT).Our research makes several contributions. Firstly, we conducted (i) an analysis of training practices within the Stäubli company, coupled with (ii) a qualitative analysis of the barriers and opportunities associated with IT. Based on this and a review of the field, our second contribution is the proposal of an original model of the user-centered collaborative design process for IPT. This model was tested in various training project cases, including initial design, redesign, and remote scenarios, in diverse execution contexts (mandatory IT use, absence of training plans, tight time constraints, etc.). On one hand, the design process was validated by evaluating the outcomes, namely the developed applications. Their usability, acceptability, and pedagogical value were assessed using qualitative and quantitative approaches. On the other hand, the model's validation was done by comparing the prescribed process with real-world practices. Iterative improvements were proposed until a design process model for FPI was aligned with Stäubli's practices.A third contribution of our work involved analyzing collaboration phases, particularly convergence phases within the proposed process. We specifically studied the co-design phases of pedagogical scenarios using Intermediate Objects (IO) as an approach. Preliminary results from qualitative analyses of collaboration quality highlighted the importance of properly specifying these IDOs.Building on these results, our fourth and final contribution was to operationalize our model within the company's context. We translated it into a roadmap that contains essential elements for the seamless integration of our work into Stäubli's teams for future projects. Our roadmap was tested through a simulated trial involving three training needs scenarios presented to an internal panel within the company. The results from semi-structured interviews were positive, indicating an easy adoption of the roadmap

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe term “ sound immersion ” appeared in various artistic fields at the end of the 20th century. It covers many dimensions, whether they are physical, metaphorical or even metaphysical. However, sound immersion can only be achieved with, by or for sound. From the concrete realization of the auditory phenomenon in all its omnidirectionality, to the artistic and contextualized implementation of interaction with the sound world, via a conjunction with the ecological spirit to the quest for modified states of consciousness, sound immersion proposes to communicate differently with the world through sound. In particular, the term has gained considerable extent with contemporary music, highlighting new paradigms and concepts, developing new ways of approaching areas such as corporeality, multiplicity, interaction, fusion, or spirituality. The notion of sound immersion helps us to understand several specific languages, and the resulting aesthetic implies multiple trends or styles, and is thus associated with the search for greater sensitivity and expanded spatiality, a non-linear form of temporality or more metaphorical philosophical concepts. To better understand the ins and outs of this phenomenon, the thesis focuses on the study of Luigi Nono's universe through the analysis of his work Prometeo. Tragedia dell'ascolto (1981-1984, rev. 1985). All the particularities of sound immersion, from aesthetic apprehension to compositional realization, are illustrated, clarifying its artistic and human scope

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis investigates ion energy distributions (IEDs) during plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). PIII is a surface modification technique where an object is placed in a plasma and pulse biased with large negative voltages. The energy distribution of implanted ions is important in determining the extent of surface modifications. IED measurements were made during PIII using a pulse biased retarding field energy analyser (RFEA) in a capacitive RF plasma. Experimental results were compared with those obtained from a two dimensional numerical simulation to help explain the origins of features in the IEDs. Time resolved IED measurements were made during PIII of metal and insulator materials and investigated the effects of the use of a metal mesh over the surface and the effects of insulator surface charging. When the pulse was applied to the RFEA, the ion flux rapidly increased above the pulse-off value and then slowly decreased during the pulse. The ion density during the pulse decreased below values measured when no pulse was applied to the RFEA. This indicates that the depletion of ions by the pulsed RFEA is greater than the generation of ions in the plasma. IEDs measured during pulse biasing showed a peak close to the maximum sheath potential energy and a spread of ions with energies between zero and the maximum ion energy. Simulations showed that the peak is produced by ions from the sheath edge directly above the RFEA inlet and that the spread of ions is produced by ions which collide in the sheath and/or arrive at the RFEA with trajectories not perpendicular to the RFEA front surface. The RFEA discriminates ions based only on the component of their velocity perpendicular to the RFEA front surface. To minimise the effects of surface charging during PIII of an insulator, a metal mesh can be placed over the insulator and pulse biased together with the object. Measurements were made with metal mesh cylinders fixed to the metal RFEA front surface. The use of a mesh gave a larger ion flux compared to the use of no mesh. The larger ion flux is attributed to the larger plasma-sheath surface area around the mesh. The measured IEDs showed a low, medium and high energy peak. Simulation results show that the high energy peak is produced by ions from the sheath above the mesh top. The low energy peak is produced by ions trapped by the space charge potential hump which forms inside the mesh. The medium energy peak is produced by ions from the sheath above the mesh corners. Simulations showed that the IED is dependent on measurement position under the mesh. To investigate the effects of insulator surface charging during PIII, IED measurements were made through an orifice cut into a Mylar insulator on the RFEA front surface. With no mesh, during the pulse, an increasing number of lower energy ions were measured. Simulation results show that this is due to the increase in the curvature of the sheath over the orifice region as the insulator potential increases due to surface charging. The surface charging observed at the insulator would reduce the average energy of ions implanted into the insulator during the pulse. Compared to the case with no mesh, the use of a mesh increases the total ion flux and the ion flux during the early stages of the pulse but does not eliminate surface charging. During the pulse, compared to the no mesh case, a larger number of lower energy ions are measured. Simulation results show that this is caused by the potential in the mesh region which affects the trajectories of ions from the sheaths above the mesh top and corners and results in more ions being measured with trajectories less than ninety degrees to the RFEA front surface.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis focuses on the left invertibility and the various additional difficulties such as the singularity of observability and the singularity of left invertibility which appear when observers for nonlinear systems and more specifically for chaotic systems are synthesized. Under certain conditions, these difficulties can overcomed using the dual immersion technique. The first part of this thesis deals with the dual immersion technique, which is based on submerging the outputs and their derivatives in space of more large dimension, in order to circumvent the singularities and to find new pathes to reconstruct the states and the information embedded in the system, at the end of this part an dual immersion algorithm is presented and an application of the algorithm is illustrated in the context of a single output chaotic autonomous system. More specifically, we considered the Lorenz circuit. The second part of this thesis is entirely devoted to a more complex application of the proposed method in the context of cryptography, we have considered the Qi circuit in two different configurations. In order to emphasize the robustness of the proposed approach, the two cases are validated by simulation on Matlab. To overcome the problems linked to the analogical implementation of chaotic systems, such as the sensitivity to external conditions like humidity, temperature and all variations of associated parameters which can modify the chaotic behavior of the system, we carried out a discrete experimental implementation. in real time, under rapid sampling, of the proposed method. Thus, the digital implementation of the transmission system based on the Qi circuit is proposed at the end of this part and tested experimentally on a (NI-MyRIO) module based on LabVIEW

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe heats of immersion in n-alcohols of zeolites NaY, 5A and ZSM-5 and the kinetics of the immersion process have been determined using a Calvet MS-70 microcalorimeter. The specific heat of immersion decreased non-linearly as a function of chain length of alcohol for NaY and 5A. In contrast, the specific heat of immersion passed through a maximum at n-pentanol for ZSM-S. The specific immersion time as a function of chain length of alcohol showed an apparent linear increase in the order 5A > ZSM-S > NaY. NaY showed almost no increase. The effects of sample evacuation temperature and butyl alcohol isomer bulk on the heats of immersion were also investigated. These results were interpreted in terms of molecular accessibility of the wetting liquid into the pores of the zeolites and in terms of the Si/Al ratio of the zeolites. The overall kinetics of immersion appears to be first order.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis aims at presenting and describing the teaching practices related to language comparison in the immersive French-Occitan schools “Calandretas”. Activities focusing on the comparative observation of the functioning of different languages have been widely researched for a number of decades. They are of great interest to applied linguists who consider them as new ways of approaching language teaching, as much of foreign languages, as of the mother tongue or the language of schooling. The implementation of these activities very clearly questions the role and place attributed to languages in the language training of pupils; it addresses the languages of their language biography, of the curriculum or even languages unknown to them. Current trends lean towards disciplinary decompartmentalization and the setting up of links between languages, whether for the purpose of learning a particular target language or the wider perspective of language education. Therefore, I wanted to explore what took place in the very specific context of bilingual education, more specifically in the context of immersive teaching of the regional language. Do the teachers in the Occitan Calandretas schools compare the two languages of schooling (Occitan and French), and / or other languages? If so, how and why? Based on a study of reported and observed practices of teachers of Key Stage 3, our thesis offers to report not only on the way in which the situations of comparative observation of Occitan and French and / or other languages functioning are set up, but also to study the linguistic contents covered by the comparison. Situated at the interface between linguistics and the didactics of multilingualism, this work also seeks, to clarify the place of the comparison of languages in the plural approaches of languages and cultures from the epistemological point of view and to clarify what it means to compare languages

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe increasing complexity in chip integration (co-integration, increasing diversity of matérials…) and the race to dimension shrinkage are the two main drivers of research in microelectronics today. The optical limitations of lithography have been reached some years ago so that double patterning is now a typical process flow in production and helps reducing pattern size and increasing design density. Because of these, the manufacturing itself needs to be more tightly controlled in order to avoid marginalities. Which will affect the chip operation. The cross-effects between these elements are more numerous and their ratio in the total budget is larger whereas the needs for tighter process control are rising. This thesis presents a holistic approach of the control of one of the main parameters for photolithography: focus. It is directly linked to the quality of the image transferred into the photoresist during exposure. Its control is then essential. Variability sources for focus are manifold and diverse: laser, mask, optical column, servo-controllers, wafer flatness, integration, design, substrate reflectivity, material quality etc. All these are added to each other, leading to the creation of defects which can be catastrophic such as shorts. The first objective of this work was to show current challenges raised by STMicroelectronics new technologies, specifically photolithography-wise and focus-wise. A budget breakdown of two critical processes (Metal line patterning in 28nm FD-SOI and Contact patterning for 14nm FD-SOI) has been established which gives the impact of every effect. The product layout effects were evaluated to represent up to 20% of the complete budget and 50% of its intra-chip component. Topography contributes to a large part of these effects and offline measurements showed up to 32nm 3s of height variation in a single field. This may lead to local defocuses of the same order of magnitude. The usable depth of field being about 60 to 70nm for the studied layers, it is clear that focus control is really tight here. The holistic approach of topology leaded to the use of data mining tooling as PLS regression (Partial least Square). It allowed the highlighting of main causes of topography, the creation of a predictive model of topology and the evaluation of several improvement solutions. One may distinguish “palliative” and “curative” solutions. In the first category, on may put scanner levelling improvements which might be effective for every technology without any modification to make on integration and design. The emulated wafer map methodology providing on-product focus non-uniformities without any measurements is also a solution for investigation. “Curative” solutions may concern the mitigation of risk factors by modifying the design topography built-up main factors

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe relative contribution of the different sensory inputs in erect postural control has often been studied. The aim of this work is to determine this contribution in two positions relatively close in their configuration: the handstand and the upside-down posture in water. If vision is often considered as the main information in postural control, the structural configuration (restricted visual field in handstand, eye’s immersion in upside-down posture) of these two postures lets imagine a different operation. Disruption of sensory receptors involved in postural control has allowed observing the reorganization implemented by the central nervous system (CNS). In addition, the visual field dependence appeared to be a relevant factor to observe interindividual behavioral differences. Disturbance of postural control was assessed through a kinematic analysis and a stabilometric analysis of the handstand (classical analysis and non-linear analysis). Results of these analyzes suggest different strategy according to visual field dependence in the control of the handstand, which does not seem to be the case in upside-down posture

Indeed, manufacturers aim at shrinking device critical dimensions in order to improve their performances and to decrease their costs. In that respect, lithography plays a predominant role since it is the step that defines the circuit. The lithography technique used for mass production today and that addressed the 65 nm technology node is optical lithography at a wavelength of 193 nm. But it is difficult to improve resolution without greatly increasing complexity, tool price and difficulty in controlling the process. A solution is immersion lithography which principle is to introduce a fluid of higher refractive index than air between the last lens element and the wafer : it, firstly, releases the process constraints by a depthof-focus improvement and, secondly, improves the resolution in keeping 193 nm infrastructures. The purpose of this PhD is to create and validate a 193 nm immersion interferometric setup to study, in advance of tool availability, some aspects of this new optical lithography technique. In this thesis, we describe the design of an achromatic interferometric setup working in immersion at 193 nm. Such a setup has the great advantage of enabling the use of a laboratory excimer laser and does not suffer from its poor coherence parameters. We focused on the characterization of the optical setup and have determined parameters for depth-of-focus and transmission. Finally, we studied imaging at high numerical apertures. We showed the benefit of immersion on resolution and the correlation between roughness increase and contrast loss due to polarisation

This thesis claims to make an evaluation of the communicative skills acquired in an unknown language by subjects placed in linguistic immersion, relating the aforementioned skills with the linguistic, cultural and procedural background of the subjects as well as the more usual parameters which condition the appropriation of foreign languages. Our study applies to a sample of some eighty university students who have recently moved to a region of Spain, Catalonia and belong, for the most part, to mobility programs. In this work we attempt to confirm any causal relationship between the degree of communicative skills acquired in an unknown language (Catalan in that case) and the various parameters which condition language learning: on the one hand, motivation, general attitude, language exposure and the type of learning; on the other, the linguistic profile of the subjects (which allows positive transfers), the way they use it and how they perceive it. As regards the traditional factors of appropriation of a foreign language, we claim to confirm the impact of a positive attitude, a high motivation, and sufficient time of exposure on the acquisition of communication skills in the target language. We postulate, following researchers in "didactics of plurilingualism", that the genetic and/or structural proximity between the language(s) of anyone’s linguistic repertoire and the unknown target language is very likely to favour the development of such communicative skills. Moreover we hope to contribute to the definition of plurilingualism since we attempt to validate experimentally some descriptions realized on the basis of various reference tools coming from the research on intercomprehension, such as the skills reference data on multilingual communication in intercomprehension, Costes’s categorizations or Meissner’s didactic principles. Besides, our research is based on objective as well as subjective data related to the degree of plurilingualism of each subject, such as their preliminary linguistic experiences; their own evaluation of their level of plurilingualism, or their view on the advantages and drawbacks of such characteristic. Finally, we are highly interested in the possible impact of a "diversified", "heterogeneous", "complex" profile on the capacities of appropriation of another linguistic system. We have worked mostly on declarative data, collected from on-line questionnaires inspired by the European Languages Portfolios (COE) and the accuracy of such data has been confirmed by a short hetero-evaluation of receptive skills achieved by a subgroup of our sample. The computer implementation of the models as well as of data processing procedures make it possible for the experiment and the analyses to be reproduced and applied to a sample of a bigger size or of another composition, on the basis of other models. The results point out an important and significant positive effect of the factor labelled “attitude towards languages and towards the unknown target language”. In the same way, the number of acquired / learnt languages and their typological genetic proximity to the target language have proved quite relevant. Yet, the effect of other kinds of structural transfers has not been evidenced.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleSimulators provide great promises of pedagogical utility in a wide array of practices. This study focuses on the use of a full-scale mannequin simulator in training of personnel at an intensive care unit at a Swedish hospital. In medicine, simulators are a means of doing realistic training without risks for the patient. Simulators for use in intensive care medicine are built to resemble as closely as possible the human physiology. In the studied sessions the simulator (a Laerdal SimMan) is set up to be an as-authentic-as-possible replication of the nurses regular, day-to-day practice.
In examining the training-sessions, it was found that the participants often did other things than “proper” simulation, such as joking or making comments about the simulation. These “transgressional activities” were studied from a perspective of ethnomethodology, using video-recordings of the session. These were transcribed and analyzed in detail using ethnomethodologically informed interaction analysis.
Several themes were developed from the recordings and transcripts. These have in common that they demonstrate the participants’ own achievement and maintenance of the simulation as a distinct activity. The analysis provides an account of how the local order of the simulation is upheld, how it is breached and how the participants find their way back into doing “proper” simulation. It is an overview of the interactional methods that participants utilize to accomplish the simulation as a simulation.
This study concludes with a discussion of how this study can provide a more nuanced view of simulations, in particular the relation between simulated and “real” practices. Notions of realism, authenticity and fidelity in simulations can all be seen to be the participants’ own concern, which informs their activities in the simulation.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis essay investigates the experience of Latin American international students at Boston College (BC) and how their preconceived notions impact both their experience pre and post arrival to college. Boston College culture, language barriers, academic pressure, housing arrangements and American norms are all factors that fuel the identity crisis that Latin American students experience at Boston College. These factors either drive Latin American students to engage in Boston College culture or, on the contrary, impel students to isolate themselves from American culture and from befriending other Americans. As seen through the conversations with students, the latter experience can often lead to dissatisfied outlooks and the longing to return to the students’ host countries. This study highlights the thoughts and experiences of Latin American students at Boston College while also providing solutions on how to improve the International Assistant Program (IAP) at Boston College. The solutions put forward in this study aim to encourage other universities across the globe to improve their immersion programs so that the needs of international students can be met

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe research "To the Press Office of the Diary - A review of the letters from readers of the Diário de S. Paulo" aims to conduct a semiotic analysis of the discourse of the newspaper dai1y readers of the newspaper and further understanding, through semiotic examination, the relation between those and the newspaper. The choice of the Diário is justified by the popular character of the newspaper and its experience in this field through the years (125). Hence, By maping these readers reactions, their points and requirements it will be possible to understand what place has the newspaper achieved in their lives. Additionally, it aims to analise if the responses of the readers make new topics emerge on the daily draft of the newspaper. The concept of immersive reader will be used in this research as a fundamental point of analisis of the point of views of the readers who found themselves embraced by a new concept of reading, marked by the interactivity of the ciber space. Thus, the comparison between the attitude of readers of a newspaper printed and readers of blogs on the intemet will be crucial to this work as it examines the changes brought by intemet and the immersive lector that it introduces. The corpus of this research is composed by a selection of letters to the Diário de S. Paulo. It will be considered the letters published in 2007, 2008 and 2009 (from January to March). The reactions of the readers after cases of great commotion, related to religion, sexuality and policies. The methodology involves the discourse analyisis of the contents of the letters and also the newspaper that are connected, as well as bibliographic and documentary literature. Serão analisadas as cartas cujo conteúdo esteja relacionado a três temas: religião, sexualidade e política.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleWestern Armenian was declared “definitely endangered” in 2010, although the language is taught in private Armenian schools across a global diaspora created by a genocide in 1915. Enrollment in Armenian schools in the Middle East has been declining for four decades, while the Armenian schools of France are growing & evolving & all are facing a rapidly changing educational climate. Conducted in Beirut, Amman, Paris & Marseille, and involving participants from Aleppo, this study analyzes data from more than 100 diasporan Armenians and a dozen schools. An interdisciplinary, post-structuralist & constructivist approach is taken to understanding the roles of school policies in attracting parents to Armenian schools, in effectively transmitting the language to students, & promoting the vitality of the language in each of the four contexts. Discourse Analysis is applied to both structural & personal representations of the language & of the schools. Ethnolinguistic Vitality & Language Socialization theories are used to understand the connections between policy, parent school choice & the wider vitality of the language. Parent school choice is looked at in terms of consumer psychology, and ultimately Bourdieu’s concept of habitus is the most apt for explaining why Armenian parents choose non-Armenian schools, & why this often becomes a definitive family break from the institution. Policy above the school level is found to have less impact on vitality than school enrollment & dominant discourses on language maintenance. Recommendations are made for policies & pedagogy
Kim, Minsong. „Being Connected: How a Relational Network of Educators Promotes Productive Communities of Practice“. Thesis, Boston College, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:107270.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn this dissertation study, I examined the extent to which a relational network of teachers, administrators, two-way immersion (TWI) experts and mentors promote productive communities of practice (CoP). In a conventional instruction, teachers are often isolated in their classrooms, and a private practice culture prevails. In 2012, the Two-Way Immersion Network for Catholic Schools (TWIN-CS) was launched in an effort to support school reform by engaging school leaders and teachers to collectively learn toward implementing TWI models in their schools. Using the framework of communities of practice (Lave & Wenger, 1991; Wenger, 1999), I employed a case study design (Yin, 2009) to explore a national network of Catholic elementary school educators. Data sources included qualitative data featuring semi-structured interviews and quantitative source from a relational network survey. Qualitative results revealed that organizational features of TWIN-CS are critical in promoting participants’ learning to implement TWI. In particular, participants discussed the annual TWIN Summer Academy and bi-monthly webinars to be instrumental for their learning. Many participants also shared that an expansion of CoPs beyond TWIN-CS further prompted productive learning. However, the qualitative evidence also showed a lack of clear internal and external network structures and role definition, and sustaining connection beyond the Summer Academy and webinars were perceived as a great challenge. Quantitative results suggest that TWIN-CS has a core-and-periphery network structure with the Boston College design team at the innermost core, with visibly dense ties connecting to and from them. Most teachers, on the other hand, occupy the most peripheral positions in this network. Survey evidence also showed that participants generally perceived a much stronger learning relationship within schools and showed less certainty on cross-network relationships. In terms of learning characteristics, majority of the respondents viewed knowledge sharing, trust, and advice-oriented dimensions “strongly” but perceived a lack of data-driven learning for both within school and cross-network. I conclude this study with a discussion of implications for future research and practice

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe fabrication of shelf-stable cured meat products is based on the hurdle technology and on the coupling of unit-operations such as salting, drying, fermentation and smoking. In Northern countries, these processes whether traditional or industrialized, lead to end-products which are both shelf-stable and ready-to-eat. Meat spoilage is accelerated in tropical conditions or when the general hygiene is not controlled. In order to counteract it, traditional processes in these conditions use more drastic treatments leading to end-products which require an additional preparation step before being consumed (cooking, desalting). The general objective of this work is to propose an innovative process adapted to Southern countries and leading to a salted/dried/fermented meat product which is shelf-stable and ready-to-eat. The innovation consists in treating meat pieces by coupling a pre-stabilization by Dehydration-Impregnation by Soaking (DIS) with a controlled surface fermentation step. By means of a progressive experimental strategy associated with modelization, this thesis studies the DIS/surface fermentation coupling and determines which levers are available to optimize it.The answers comprised three parts. Firstly, a study on the real food product validated the coupling of DIS with a surface fermentation by Lactobacillus sakei. Secondly, a study on a model device showed the influence of relevant environmental factors (water activity, salt content, pH and lactic acid content) on the surface growth of L. sakei. Finally, a global model was built to analyze the coupling of mass transfers (water, salt, sugars, acid) between the surface and the core of the product, and the fermentative metabolism at the surface of the product. Keywords: meat products, Dehydration-Impregnation by Soaking, surface fermentation, , Lactobacillus sakei, growth kinetics, mass transfers

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe use of non-immersive virtual environments in education has not been studied, as it should have been. However, some authors have already demonstrated the benefits coming from using such technology. VRML - Virtual Reality Modeling Language provides means for using virtual environments in the Internet. It is a platformindependent language that allows the specification of virtual environments where users can walk in, observe different objects and interact with them. Students can benefit from this technology, since it allows them to access objects describing subjects that students should study. This work is presented in three parts. In the first one, we investigate the use of virtual environments in math education for developing cognitive aspects, the experiences and necessary conditions for using this technology in improving logic and mathematical thinking. In the second part, we present both the conceptual model and the implementation of an educational tool intended to help in math education. The third part is a case study: we have developed a virtual environment using VRML, and it has been applied in math classes for 7th grade students. Data collected during this experiment has been analyzed statistically and some conclusions can be drawn based on those results, and observations.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe aim of this thesis is to observe the evolution of the specific knowledge and practices of the City of Paris’ technical services and this, through the example of an ambitious Parisian urban development project called “Réinventons nos places”. The study focuses on the professional activities performed in the development of three public squares (Place des Fêtes, Place de la Nation, and Place de la Bastille), with the purpose to see how the specialists adapted themselves to the various challenges offered by the City council (for instance, to take into account : the Gender in the development of a public space, digital objects, innovation in project management and in the way of managing space)... To examine this process “in a work situation” will lead us, for example, to describe the way these specialists will assimilate new knowledge and know-how in this particular context. Ultimately, the City Council, when progressively adapting the work and the work organization of the various actors, as well as the project goawls themselves, seems to be aiming at the creation of a “new model”, a new way of developing public spaces. We are going to examine the first step within this new way, in which engineers and architects have to reconsider their habits in order to meet new demands – they do this, notably, by making still unknown objects and by fitting them into both a specific area and a background they know well : Paris’ public spaces
